It's all about the gut. That clip was from our guest of the show today. Tina Anderson, she is the co-founder of Just Thrive Help. And she created a probiotic. And this probiotic is a serious real deal probiotic. It's been through all the tests, all the things. and we're going to get into it in this episode about the importance of gut health to overall health. I had so many questions because I've been on antibiotics so many times for tons of different stuff when it came to jaw surgery or my boob implants.
Starting point is 00:01:45 So this was really interesting to hear about how the imbalance of a gut can lead to a lot of diseases and illnesses. And one of the most interesting things she said on the show that I've never thought about is that we're more bacteria than human, which is something that a lot of people think about myself included. And once you hear someone like Tina with the knowledge base that she has, start explaining what's going on in the gut, how it's connected to our immune system, our overall health, how it speaks to our brain, how it really determines a lot of the health conditions that all of us are under, you really start to think like, oh, maybe I should take it a little bit more seriously and take a probiotic. How I get my probiotics in is I, and we talk about it in this episode, I eat a lot of kimchi. I take inulin, which is a prebiotic fiber. And I take a probiotic every single. day. I think that I need to focus on though personally eating more foods that I know have probiotics in them and being very diligent about the probiotic because sometimes I forget about it and I'm realizing after this episode how important it actually is. Well, this is just like anything

Let's just ask the question that I feel like everyone in 2020 needs to know. Why is it so important to take care of your gut?
Starting point is 00:03:55 That is an excellent question, Lauren. It's so important to take care of your gut is because we are 10 times more bacterial cells than we are human. The human microbiome project was launched about 2009 or so, told us more about the gut than we ever knew before. We basically have found out that everything is dictated by the health of our gut. So it's almost hard to find any disease state that is not affected by the health of our microbiome, which the microbiome is the totality of all the microorganisms that are, on and in us, most of them being in our gut. There's so much going on. There's 50,000 studies that just came out on gut health over the past year. And we're just tipping, we're at the tip of the iceberg right now. We've got so much more information out there that's coming out on gut health. Do you see a lot of people that don't take care of their gut? Because one of them sitting to my left. And the other one's
Starting point is 00:04:45 behind the producer. Well, I see a lot of people that don't know that they're not taking care of their got. See, what's so sad about this is that we are living in this very anti-microbial world. We are more bacteria, like I said, than we are human, yet we live in this world that is so antimicrobial. You know, just for example, the hand sanitizers is one very relevant example right now. The hand sanitizers are killing our bacteria. I would never use an hand sanitizer. I will admit in March when this all came out, I did start, I'm like, oh, maybe this is really bad. Maybe I should, you know, start using it. But I would never have used hand sanitizer before because we know that it's the microbes on our body, which we need. For example, households that, there's a study that
Starting point is 00:05:27 came out that show that households that have, that use cleaning products that say kills 99.99% of bacteria, actually have children with a higher incidence of asthma, allergies, autism, those types of, you know, things going on. So we want to be clean, but not by using soap and water, you know, by using water with some essential oils, but we don't want, we really, we're living in a really anti-microbial world. And why is that? It's because these things kill our bacteria that are good bacteria that we need, or what is it? Yes, exactly. They're killing our good bacteria. And it's not just those types of things that are killing our bacteria. I mean, really one of the biggest offenders are antibiotics that are found, you know, that we just take antibiotics, but then
Starting point is 00:06:07 antibiotics in our food supply too. In the, you know, meat products, you're going to find antibiotics. That's why I'm such a proponent of trying to eat clean. They say even a single course of amoxicillin can wreak havoc on your gut for over a year period of time. time. And of course, I'm not suggesting that you don't take an antibiotic if it's saving your life or, you know, antibiotics save lives. But it's just, there was, CDC came up with a study that showed that 50% of antibiotics were prescribed and weren't really necessary. And a lot of it is doctors get pressure. They get pressure from patients. Like, I'm going out of town, give me an antibiotic. And that actually makes the problem worse because antibiotics kill the bad bacteria, which we want it to, but it's also
Starting point is 00:06:45 killing the good bacteria. We don't want it to. And yet our immune system is in our gut. And so you're trying to fight a viral infection, and now you've got an antibiotic that's actually ruining your body's chance of fighting that infection. I actually have two stories about antibiotics that maybe would benefit the audience that I think are important to talk about. And the first one is that I got dermatitis all over my face from the mask. I found out that it was being caused by cotton masks and that whenever I wear a mask, it needs to be a disposable one. So I kept getting on doxycycline. Over and over, I did three rounds of it.
Starting point is 00:07:19 and what would happen is it would go away right away when I took the doxycycline, always would do a probiotic, do a just-thrived probiotic with the antibiotic, which was great. But then after I was done with the course of antibiotics, it would come back. And I was like, there's something, this is weird, and it's probably had to do with my gut. So finally, I found Keflex toner, and that took away the dermatitis. And what it was was, it was an antibiotic toner. So I guess my question for you is, is that affecting my gut in the same way as a pill would? Yeah, yeah, because your skin is the biggest organ that you have.
Starting point is 00:07:54 So it was still sinking into my gut. It was still sinking into your gut. So I still took the probiotic and that definitely helped. It's gone now. But I honestly think that doing the toner for me was better than the actual pill. It worked better. So if anyone's struggling with dermatitis. The other thing I noticed is that I kept getting UTIs, but then I started using a coconut oil lube, woo. I haven't gotten one sense. Okay. Is that because it was offsetting, like what was happening there? Well, yeah, that's exactly what's going on. So that's what's so crazy about your gut health is it's hard to find any type of condition that's a non-communicable disease that doesn't have to do with an imbalance in your gut, even in UTI. I mean, especially a UTI because so much of your vaginal microbiome is dictated by your regular microbiomes or your gut microbiome. So absolutely. And we see this people who are on for acne. They're on the antibiotics for years. And I mean, time and time again, when we first started, I talked to customers who would say, oh my gosh, you know, I was, I have all, I have ulcerative colitis, I have Crohn's, I have CBO, I have all these different types of conditions, and I was on antibiotics as a kid for acne for so many years. So it's, when people are on antibiotics for long periods of times, it really does disrupt the gut microbiome. So we just have to be really mindful of that. Don't you think whenever someone's on an antibiotic,
Starting point is 00:09:12 they should offset it with a probiotic? Absolutely. And the problem is most probiotics, though, don't survive the presence of an antibiotic. So just like the, you know, good bacteria and the bad bacteria will get killed, I mean, it's good to do it. It's still going to support it. Now, the strains that are in Just Thrive actually have been studied to, you know, actually survive the presence of an antibiotic, which is, you know, I don't know of any other probiotic that's actually been shown that. It's a very different category. And we could get into that later. But I definitely think that you should be on a probiotic if you're on antibiotics. Absolutely. Okay. Starting point is 00:09:47 it is, it's one of a kind. And how did you, how did you get yourself into this? Like what, I'm sure that's an interesting story. Yeah, I have kind of an interesting story. I started out my career as an attorney and I was in litigation for many years and then my husband was in the pharmaceutical industry and he, he, we were so proud. And then I decided to stay home with the kids a little bit more, have more time at home. And I left the high stress crazy hours at the law firm and I went into the family pharmaceutical business. And I thought it was great because I'm like, oh my gosh, we're helping people feel better. bringing life-saving drugs to people. But after many years in the industry, we really started to see a lot of the abuses going on. We started to see the over-prescribing of drugs. We saw that with family
Starting point is 00:10:27 members who would start on one, and the next thing, you know, they're on 12, and really not any better. And then, and I read a lot of Wayne Dyer, Norm of Vincent Peel, so does my husband, were very deep thinkers. And we kept saying, like, we are not doing our life's work. This is not feeding our soul. The straw that broke the camel's back was when we had a pharmaceutical rep, into our office. We were distributors and they came into our office and said, oh, my God, we just won this huge bid. Now my job is to go to every doctor at this big hospital system that we won the bid at and tell them that they need to lower the number that they prescribe this medication. And so it's like basically they're prescribing a medication when they don't really need it.
Starting point is 00:11:07 And we just, we were like, you know what, this is it. And so we started researching and doing a lot of different things in the health and wellness space, learning about different, you know, we had all different kinds of ideas. And my husband's chiropractor came up, talked to us about how he had the opportunity to get these rights to these strains from London University out of Dr. Simon Cutting, who's like world-renowned probiotic expert out of London University. And why is it so different than any other probiotic? It's so different because the majority of probiotics on the market are made up of lactobacillus and bifidobacter strains. Those are not the strains that we use. We use a totally different category. In a broad sense, I'll call them
Starting point is 00:14:10 spore-based probiotics. So they're made up of bacillus spore-based probiotics. And the biggest difference between spores, and they're not like mushroom spores. Their spores, meaning they have an endospore shell around themselves. And that shell provides protection for them to get to the intestines alive. Most probiotics, 98% of them, die before they ever get to the intestines. Does it mean they don't do anything? No, even dead bacteria will do something. But these spore-based probiotics actually have the ability to naturally survive the gastric system, get to the intestines alive, where they go to work and they read the microbial environment. So it's a very, very different approach to probiotic.
Starting point is 00:14:50 And it's an entirely different category of probiotics. So are most probiotics actually not getting to our gut? Yeah. Most probiotics arrive dead. They're dead on arrival. So we're just taking dead shit. Yeah. And they're alive.
Starting point is 00:15:05 And that's one of the biggest myths out there is that a probiotic needs to be alive. And it is true they need to be alive, not in the refrigerator at the grocery store. They need to be alive in your intestines. and most probiotics are not making it to that journey, that making the journey to the intestines 100% alive. So they're just not getting where they need to go, or like most of it's not getting where it needs to go. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:25 And again, I'm not saying that dead bacteria will do something. They may give you some symptomatic relief because people will say, but I've taken a probiotic and I've kind of felt something and you might find some symptomatic relief, but it's not getting to the root cause of the issue. It's not reconditioning the gut.
Starting point is 00:15:38 It's not, you know, the best way to explain the difference really is if you envision a garden and a garden, it's been stepped on and trampled on and there's weeds growing all over the garden. And kind of compare that to your gut. You've got good bacteria and bad bacteria. The other probiotics on the market, the majority of the conventional probiotics in the market,
Starting point is 00:15:54 you throw those seeds in there. Most of those seeds never get to the garden. But even if they did, they would maybe plant a new plant in there. But they're not doing anything with the weeds in the garden. They're not doing anything with the plants in the garden. The spores in Just Thrive actually go into that garden. Well, because you're not doing anything to support the gut flora. Because when you're taking the antibiotic, it's killing the good bacteria and the bad bacteria.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And so we really want to make sure that you're supporting and fixing that. damage that's going on. The antibiotic is causing damage. And we want to make sure that we're fixing that damage by using a probiotic. So what else, like say someone like me who's not as educated as you and Lauren on this subject, what are the most common symptoms that people are facing by not taking probiotics or by not managing their gut health? Because I think, you know, I'm, I don't want to say I have a bad diet. I think I'll lean more on the healthy side, but I do, I'm not nearly as healthy as Lauren and probably you. Like, what are the complications that can arise by not thinking about gut health in a probiotic. Okay. So the first thing that everyone thinks about
Starting point is 00:17:17 gut health is digestive issues. So we have gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, all those things. But what people aren't really thinking of a lot, well, then of course, most important, is your immune health. I mean, your immune system, 70 to 80 percent of your immune system, like I mentioned, is found in your gut lining. So our immune system is really dictated by the health of our microbiome. That's why people who have autoimmune issues, they almost for sure have a leaky gut. And We could talk about that later. But basically, so we've got digestive issues, immune issues, but then skin health. You know, people aren't thinking they have eczema or they have psoriasis or they have acne.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Those are all stemming from an imbalance in your microbiome. Even things like mood. Mood is a huge one. Anxiety, depression. Those types of matters are all stemmed from an imbalance in your gut. There's a lot of communication going on between the gut and the brain. There's something called the vagus nerve. It connects the gut in the brain.
Starting point is 00:18:08 And they're always sending messages back and forth to each. other, 90% of our serotonin is produced in our gut. Of course, that's the happy hormone. Dopamine is produced in our gut. Gabba, all these really important neurotransmitters that help regulate our mood are produced in the gut. And then things like weight management, people don't think about that. Even the type of bacteria you have in your gut will dictate how you metabolize food. So if you have more bacteriities type of bacteria in your gut, then you're one of those people that could look at a, or eat a cupcake and not gain any weight. And then if you have more firmacities in your gut, you're one of those people that has, you know, looks at the cupcake and gains 10 pounds. So it's, it's really interesting how the balance of the gut really dictates every aspect of your overall health. I am making my
Starting point is 00:18:51 husband and Taylor take one of these and me on air because Michael is dealing with some stress right now. How many should you take two? Why do you think, here's my problem with this year is that there's obviously, there's a lot going on this year with this pandemic. And my, one of my biggest problem is like there's very little focus on anybody, you know, at a high government level talking about about boosting immunity, right? Like, it's all about how to avoid how to hide. Nobody's talking about, hey, like, get your gut health in order, you know, get some vitamin D, like, boost your immune system. And obviously, this would be very helpful for people to know about because like even now, you know, we've been talking a lot about vitamin D on this show, but we haven't, we touched very
Starting point is 00:19:26 little on the importance of gut health and immunity. And I think like, if it's as simple as, I don't say it's as simple, but if you could start adding probiotics and boosting your immunity and having a better chance of fighting off disease or sicknesses. Like, that's obviously something everybody would be interested in doing. Right. No, absolutely. You're preaching to the choir here, Michael, because I am so adamant about that. I'm like, where is anybody standing up and telling us, let's take care of our immune system right now? Let's, you know, support our immune system. Let's talk about get-huff. Let's even vitamin D. No, I mean, there's so many amazing studies about vitamin D and supporting our immune system. And nobody is talking about it. I made the mistake of listening to the news.
Starting point is 00:20:03 I had, there was a doctor on the news and somebody had asked him, well, what about all these studies with vitamin D? And he said, oh, yeah, there's really amazing studies. The newscaster says, well, so should people start taking vitamin D? He said, oh, no. And I thought, what do you mean? Oh, no. You know, I mean, of course you should be measuring your vitamin D levels. It could be toxic, but it's so unlikely. And, you know, you need to, you could measure, people could measure it, but for sure people should be taking vitamin D. For sure, people should be supporting their gut. Again, I can't emphasize that enough. Seventy to 80 percent of your immune tissue is found in your gut lining. I mean, we need to be taking care of our gut. Even if you're taking vitamin
Starting point is 00:20:38 D in order to absorb the vitamin D if you have inflammation going on your gut. And I mean, most people do, unfortunately. Most people do. The world we live in, I mean, the chemicals stress, fear. I mean, the fear that has been instilled in our population is the worst thing we could be doing for our immune system. Oh, yeah. I mean, I feel like when you have stress and anxiety and fear, you're killing all of your systems, right? Like, and they're shutting down and then you're even more susceptible disease and sickness. Absolutely. I mean, that's probably the hardest part is when I hear everybody in the fear, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:21:10 I just want to say, you know, our bodies are beautifully designed to heal. I mean, we are beautifully designed to heal ourselves, and we just need to keep ourselves resilient. That's the biggest thing is keeping ourselves resilient by focusing our immune system. Instead, it's like everyone's joking about everyone's drinking alcohol and eating sugar, and these are the worst things we could be doing. Hiding indoors, not getting light, not getting exercise, not eating healthy. Yeah, I mean, you wonder, like, if you could concoct a perfect formula this year to make people sicker, it's like put them indoors, have them stop exercising, don't talk about how to be healthy, have them try to avoid things, be stressed, be fearful. Like, to me, that sounds like a perfect formula to get people in a very sick place, not only in the body, but in the mind.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Absolutely. And that's one of the reasons we got into what we're doing right now is because I just, the conventional medical method is look at, like a cardiologist looks at the heart. You know, I mean, a dermatologist looks at the skin, but no, they aren't necessarily looking at the whole body. And that's why, of course, I'm very into like the more functional, holistic, integrative type of medicine, because we want to look at the whole body. And I feel like the same thing has happened with the times that we're living in right now. We're looking in tunnel vision at this one virus when really we should be looking at our whole body and our whole immune system and how we could help prepare our bodies to be resilient. I eat in Yulin in my coffee every day. What are some natural ways that you can support the gut? What are some foods that you reach for? A lot of times what I do is I don't reach for certain things that I think are so offensive. So, you know, sugar. Talk about specifics. Yeah, definitely sugar and alcohol. But I do reach for sugar and alcohol, but I mean, those are things I try to avoid. And, you know, of course, I drink dry farm and I do different things that are cleaner types of wines. But there are like, there's fermented foods,
Starting point is 00:25:10 which fermented foods are really, really good. They just don't replace a probiotic. The strains, just to kind of back up, the strains that these spores are actually found in the environment. They were found years ago in the environment. Unfortunately, they're no longer in our soil anymore. You're not going to find them, you know, in the populated areas that we live. And if you went to a tribe in Tanzania, you would find these strains. So, You can't really find a food source of the spore-based probiotics. You can find probiotics-rich foods in fermented foods, but the problem is they are live bacteria when you swallow them.
Starting point is 00:25:43 And so the gut or the stomach acid will kill them too by the time they get to the intestines. They will give you a lot. I mean, I'm a huge fan of fermented foods, and I think everybody should eat them because they are so nutrient dense. You get so many nutrients from them. They just, and they will give some, you know, gut, health support, but they're not replacing a probiotic. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:04 So there's nothing that you, like, really go for. Like, Cambocha, like, what do you think of all that? Yeah, no, I think it's all really good. I do think it's really good. I think it's great support of your gut, but it's not going to actually go into that garden and, you know, get rid of the weeds and help the probiotic strains come back to life. Do you think every single person on the entire planet should be taking a probiotic? I do.
Starting point is 00:26:24 I think every, I think it's where you start with gut health. It's ground zero for health. I mean, I think everybody that wakes up breathing should have a probiotic. I mean, even children, and, you know, we could go into that. But just another quick thing I wanted to mention is intermittent fasting is also really, really helpful for your gut health because it's helping create diversity in the gut, which is what we want. We want a diverse group of bacteria in our gut.
Starting point is 00:26:46 And so when you intermittent fast, you actually have, gives your body the opportunity to create more of these keystone strains that are really important in your gut. So I think intermittent fasting is a great tool. Even like meditation and mindfulness, I know it sounds woo-woo, but it's serious. I mean, when I talked about that gut brain connection, it's real. I mean, it's really, there's the vagus nerve is talking back and forth to each other all the time. So mindful practice, intermittent fasting, eating a diverse group of foods, I think is really good for the gut health. So going to like ethnic grocery stores.
Starting point is 00:27:17 You could go to like a Chinese grocery store in India, Middle Eastern grocery store, and get different types of foods, different types of fruit vegetables or different types of vegetables. So you're getting different kinds of foods. See, we have to remember, we eat like. like 15 or, on average, the average American eats like the same 16 foods over a course of a year, where our ancestors used to eat 600 different types of foods over a course of a year. Diversity in your food choices is helpful. This may be an ignorant question, but like is what are the downsides to take into probiotic if there are any? Well, you know, when you're talking about the spore-based probiotics, there is no downside because we have to remember our ancestors got these every day from our environment.
Starting point is 00:27:56 They were just what we were eating on a regular basis. And every single living species has a binding site for these strains. So it's not like it wouldn't work for you, but it works for me. It's going to do something different in your body than it's going to do in my body. So there wouldn't be any downside at all. I mean, sometimes when people start on a probiotic, they may have so much dysbiosis, so much imbalance going on the gut that they actually start having something called die-off, where they were killing off the pathogenic bacteria.
Starting point is 00:28:26 they may have some discomfort. And when that happens, we just say, first of all, great, you know it's working, but just go slower. Just go with a half a capsule a day or one capsule every other day until you could titrate up to a full capsule. But that would be the only downside is that maybe initially you might have some gastrointestinal discomfort. Yeah, I mean, the reason I ask is because like, you know, when we started learning more about vitamin D, like, you know, telling our whole family parents take this. And like, because we haven't really found the downside, like maybe you can take too much, but just getting you to take something is important. So that's, you know, That's why I ask is like if we were to go and get Just Thrive for our entire family, like there's no
Starting point is 00:29:00 downside for them to do it. Not at all. No. There's no, nothing like that. What about babies and kids? Yeah, I'm especially passionate about that topic because babies and kids are being born into this very sterile world and a very anti-microbial world like I mentioned. More so than we were.
Starting point is 00:29:16 I was. I'm much older than you guys. You know, I remember as a kid, there was one kid through K through or yeah, K through 12 that had an allergy. I knew one person. And now it's, you know, they have this peanut-free tables. They have every, you know, so many kids have allergies right now. And so I'm very passionate about that. And that is, allergies are a sign of gut dysbiosis. We just had our pediatrician on the show and he was basically saying that we've, like, we have created allergies for these kids. Yep. Absolutely. And the world we live in, because we're, we're creating this dysbiosis in our gut.
Starting point is 00:29:47 So kids should definitely take it. We, you could actually even, I always tell like new moms if they want to like, you know, open up and just take a little like fingers of it and have your baby suck on a little bit. But it's natural. This is what our, like I said, it's what our ancestors used to give their kids every day, you know, just these types of strains. So definitely great for kids. And this would help children with allergies? Well, I can't, you know, I can't make that claim. We know that gut, when you have gut, despite what will, what it will help is creating a balance in your gut. And when you have a nice balanced gut, it's very unlikely to get, you know, have allergies. and have, you know, autoimmune issues.
Starting point is 00:30:25 One of my girlfriends, Ingrid, she lives in France, and the food is obviously very different there, and we always talk about this because the food is not as good in America. So in saying that with the supplements, the stuff that's around the, I hope I'm saying this right, the capsule, I guess. Is it important to look at what's in the capsule, not just what's the powder?
Starting point is 00:30:48 Does that make sense? Yeah, and some people actually have allergies to the capsule. Like sometimes, and I'm not talking about ours per se, but, you know, whatever, people may find some, they may have some allergens to the capsule. And people could open the capsule and mix it with food. You get kids could, you know, could bake with it for your kids. You could put it in, you know, you could hide it. I used to put it in my son's piping hot oatmeal and it would be fine.
Starting point is 00:31:10 We've actually tested our strains in the, they survive up to 455 degrees. So you could put them in food. You could bake with them. Some people just don't like to swallow capsules either. And so that's why they're great for kids for that reason, because you'd open them up. Is the ingredients that's in the capsule important too, though? Like, if there's a random probiotic that people are taking, should they do research into the capsule? Yeah, I think most, yeah, yeah, I mean, you probably should. I mean, probably, yeah. Are there a lot of probiotics out
Starting point is 00:31:38 there that aren't good? You know what? I just think they haven't caught up with the science. Yes. Can you speak on that a little bit? Yeah. So most probiotics were formulated, this whole concept of, you know, lactobacillus and bifidopacter were all formulated before the human microbiome project was launched. But I just am happy when somebody goes to a probiotic, any probiotic, even if it's not ours, because that means that they're leaving the big pharma platform. You know, my bigger goal, my competitor is big pharma. You know, it's not as much other probiotic companies. I just want to educate people to know, like, go to the natural health and wellness space
Starting point is 00:32:18 and look for something that could really make a difference. We have done something very unique in the supplement space. We actually have done human clinical trials on the strains that are used in our product. Very, very rare to happen in the supplement space. But really, I'm so passionate about getting people to, you know, go to natural health. I want to elevate the standards in the supplement industry rather than people thinking, oh, it's just snake oil out there. We want to elevate the standards.
Starting point is 00:32:43 And so I try my hardest to not, you know, complain about other brands because I'm just so happy that people are coming to the health and wellness space and looking at probiotics. I love when I hear a doctor say, you know, take a probiotic and make sure it's in the refrigerator. I don't love it. But, I mean, I'm like, oh, no, it shouldn't be in the refrigerator because if it's in the refrigerator, if it can't withstand the room temperature of the store shelf, how in the world is it going to survive your body temperature? But I'm just happy a doctor's recommending a probiotic.
Starting point is 00:33:08 Wait, talk about that. I thought it was supposed to go in the refrigerator, too. No, that's actually a huge myth out there. So the reason where it came from is that probiotics need to be live microorganisms. That's the very definition of a probiotic. It needs to be a live microorganism that confers a benefit onto the host. So it needs to be alive in the intestines. It doesn't need to be alive in the refrigerator.
Starting point is 00:33:32 And most probiotics, if they can't withstand, like I said, the room temperature of the store shelf, they would never survive your body temperature, which is much hotter at 98.6. Oh, my God, that just blew my mind. I've been keeping my probiotics. We had a bunch of those things in the fridge. I'm taking them out. Yeah. Okay, so let's take Taylor.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Okay. Taylor likes to eat Panda Express orange chicken for lunch and Cheetos for snack and I don't know what he does for dinner. He'd have to tell you. And I'm assuming he's new to the probiotic world. How would you implement it in a seamless way into his diet? Would you just say wake up and take one? I would say take one capsule at the end of your meal. And that's it.
Starting point is 00:34:10 It's so easy. At each meal? No, no, no. Just at whatever meal you'd like to take it. So it's just a once a day thing. Once a day. Could you take it on an empty stomach? You could take it on an empty stomach, but the only reason we would recommend taking it with food is that we did a study that showed that these strains germinate throughout the intestines using the food. So it's like you get more for your money if you take it with the food.

It's ground zero for health. You talked a little bit about meditation and wellness practices that you think are beneficial to the gut, too. Can you speak on that a little bit more?
Starting point is 00:36:49 What are some things that you do maybe in the morning and night? Yeah, I do deep breathing. I'm a huge fan of breath work rather than I've done meditation and I've tried to do it. I'm not, I just haven't perfected it yet, but I'm still trying. I haven't given up yet. But breathwork is really what my jive is. So I love breathwork. Can you tell us your morning routine if you have one?
Starting point is 00:37:10 It's pretty simple. I wake up. I'm usually up first. And I do my heart math, which is a breathing app that I use. And I do that. And then I say my affirmations. I write in my journal. I have a gratitude journal and I write in that every day.
Starting point is 00:37:24 I'm a huge fan of gratitude. It's a huge part of our brand, a whole story behind that. But gratitude is just a huge part of, I just think it shifts your focus. And the minute you're feeling bad, I just think that, you know, and we're so grateful for our customers. We're so grateful for our team. We have the most amazing team. And I just, it just, it's amazing how it shifts your focus. You work with your husband. I do. Some of the challenges. How long do you guys work together?
Starting point is 00:37:50 A long time. What do we need to know? What? Well, first, you need a probiotic because that's the first fucking thing you need to do. So first you need to get a probiotic. But besides getting your husband on a probiotic, what are some struggles and challenges that you have. gone through while working together. Yeah. Well, I have to be honest, we actually, we really have worked really well together. So the biggest, one of the struggles is when we started this business, it became so consuming in our lives. And we're super involved parents. Our kids are all athletes. And we're running around. And we became, Billy actually, that's my husband's name,
Starting point is 00:38:24 Billy said, I feel like it's no longer like Tina and Billy. Now it's just Tina Billy and just thrive. Tina Billy just thrive. And it's like that kind of started to become our identity. And we were like, no, that's not who we are. We're so much more than just this company. And it's so important to us. And it's a passion for us, but we didn't want to lose sight of that. I'm definitely more of the, you know, I'm the CEO of the company. So I'm a little bit more hands on. He's really more like the visionary. And we talk every morning and we don't work in the same space. So he goes into the office and I work out of my home office. But the struggles is that we just talk about it too much. That's the biggest thing. You know, we talk. We both love it, but we also have to just find other
Starting point is 00:39:02 things to do together besides talking about our business. I fully relate to that. That's, I mean, that's a problem because, you know, you know, when you're doing this and it's so important and you're having an impact on, you know, not only the relationship, but the team and then the people you speak to or the customers, like it becomes a huge topic in the, you know, not just in your relationship, but in life. And you have to figure out like, okay, how do you get away from that sometimes while also still being excited about it? Absolutely. And it even trickles down to the kids, too. You know, I'm like, when we first started, like, they thought this was the coolest thing that we had a product that was in stores all over the country and it was really neat. And then, you know, one time at dinner,
Starting point is 00:39:36 they were like, oh, can we not talk about that today? And I'm like, really? You don't want to listen to? You don't want to talk about this? So I was surprised that even they feel that way. But of course, if we do, then they would. I feel like you have to set boundaries, which took us, we've been doing, I've been doing the Skinny Confidential for 12 years. And one day I just looked at him and I'm like, I don't want to talk about work from, from, you know, six in the morning to about nine or 10 o'clock. I need to like set up my day and I don't want to go to bed with work either. Like I don't want to go to bed with my briefcase in between us. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:40:07 And when I did that, you actually did listen and we've done a pretty good job of keeping it out of the bedroom. I don't think anybody wants to do it. You just kind of accidentally fall into doing it, right? Like that's the problem is you go into a relationship. I mean, your husband probably didn't go into your relationship with Just Thrive and we didn't go into it with the skinny confidential or dear media of like what you start to and it starts to take over big parts of the relationship and you have to like proactively work on almost almost taking it out of the relationship. Absolutely. And Billy would come home for lunch and
Starting point is 00:40:35 sometimes I'd get out of my home office and I'd go into the kitchen because I just got sick of it. And then he'd come home and I'd be like, okay, listen, this is what I did here. This is what I did here. What do you think? And he's like, hold on. Like, I just left the office. Like, I just want to eat lunch right now. Oh my God. That sounds like me. My worst nightmare is when I make like a whole like eggs and bacon and like I'm about to sit down with my fork and knife and eat and he starts to talk to me work. I cannot do it. When I'm eating, I just want pure silence. And I feel like he does it on perfect. Well, no, I think the difficulty is, is you're doing this weird dance where, unless you agree upon times when you're talking about it, like, you know, the same thing could happen to me.
Starting point is 00:41:15 Like, I could be going and sitting down and reading or going playing a video game and she comes in and start, and I'm like, I don't want to talk about it. So it's this weird dance when you're a relationship. Because, for example, if I show up to work and I'm with my team, like, we know we're there to talk about this and to work. But at home, when you start blending it into a relationship, you don't really know the boundaries of when to and when not to. Absolutely. And you're right, because Billy's done it to me too. And I mean, he would always, he'd see like a Facebook post in the beginning. And he's like, oh my God, we have to respond to this. And yeah, I'd be like, no, I don't want to do it right now. I don't like to work at night. So what are some struggles that you've had as an entrepreneur
Starting point is 00:41:48 along this journey? It's actually interesting because I didn't know what I was doing at all. I mean, I had no idea about how to launch a product. And I didn't know anything about, you know, anything about launching a product or bringing it to the retail space. And I just, it was, it was hard. I mean, it was really hard. And but I just, I know how to work hard. I know how to research. And so that was the biggest thing I did. And I also then finally, one of the biggest struggles I think that, or mistakes I made is that I didn't get involved in like masterminds and different groups that would support each other. Entrepreneurs are an amazing group of people. They all want to help each other. And if you get involved in some of the right masterminds or
Starting point is 00:42:28 groups, they really. want to help each other out. And so I wish I had just gotten into that a little bit earlier. But we kind of met at a mastermind. It wasn't a mastermind. It was a party. But that's kind of where we met. Absolutely. There was a lot of masterminds there. A lot of masterminds there. Talk about, you know, feeling like imposter syndrome there. I know. Oh, my God. So what are some things that have really worked for the business? We just talked to the Wanoo Water co-founders. And we were talking about influencer marketing and direct-to-consumer and all these different strategies that they use. What have you seen to really work in 2020?
Starting point is 00:43:01 Email marketing is really effective for us. And we really focus on content creation because we have so much research. You know, the more educated our consumer is, the better it is for us because they understand the whole gut microbiome. They understand the science behind it. So we do put a lot of content out and we send emails and they read it. And then we're able, eventually they'll buy when we have, you know, sales or we have, you know, whatever. we want to, it just reminds them that the product is out there. We've worked really well with influencers. That has been a game changer for us for sure. A lot of health and wellness influencers.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And that's what you guys are really becoming like a health and wellness influencer out there. And I love the, I love that you're taking your platform and bringing it out to the masses because I think that's so important, it's so important to get this message out to people. I mean, we're trying. We're trying to really interview a lot of very, like the niche. Like this is such a niche that gut health to me. It's something that I think it can benefit everyone, especially right now. Well, I think both of us realize in regards to this show, because Lauren's been creating content for a long time, but in regards to this show, like, you can do a lot with an email
Starting point is 00:44:07 newsletter. You can do a lot with a blog post or an Instagram, but like, to me, you can educate people so much more by doing this, by having the conversation, because we are both actively learning at the same time as the audience, right? Like these questions we're asking you, it's not like, we don't know the answers. So if you can do, if you can have a conversation in a way where like we're, we are, can learn and people can hear that, they can learn. Like, I think education is the biggest thing. And it doesn't just have to be health and wellness. It can be on, you know, any kind of topic, any kind of, any kind of
Starting point is 00:44:35 subject. And I think the world starts to become a better and more interesting place when people take a second to question their beliefs and learn something new. And I think without platforms like this, it's hard to do. And it's, you know, we talked about, you know, how we're fed information now. And like, that, that's a whole different thing. So, like, being able to have a 45 hour long conversation and learn, we've found to be the most beneficial way to create content for people. Yeah, absolutely. And I could not agree with you more. And that's why I'm so drawn to podcast. And so many people are so drawn to podcast. And that is probably another area that's really worked for us, too, is because there is such a unique story behind our product and how it works
Starting point is 00:45:15 so differently in the research and the science behind it, it's really allowed for, you know, the platform for us to share it with. So being on podcasts, some, you know, larger health and wellness ones even have really, that's been really beneficial to us. Because listen, I'd have to be kind of an idiot to hear everything you've told me and know this is readily available to me and not take it, right? You haven't taken yours yet. Take it. I took it.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Maybe I am an idiot. Oh, that's Taylor. That's Taylor. No, that's Taylor. And it's the same thing. Like people, you know, taking care of your skin. Like people ask like, oh, Michael, why do you, how did you learn to take care of your skin?
Starting point is 00:45:47 Like, well, I had these conversations with people like yourself in that space. And like, okay, like, now that I know this, I was just uneducated before. And there's so many topics that. we've learned on the show that it really just stem from just being ignorant, right? And then you learn about you're like, oh, it's not that hard to do. It's beneficial. I can see like, why would you not incorporate in your life? Absolutely. I mean, that's one of the things I'm most proud of is how ignorant I could be sometimes, you know, and I just, I recognize that in myself and I learn, you know, and that's the biggest thing. If people would just question the status quo sometimes and take themselves out
Starting point is 00:46:16 and to and learn about a different topic or a new topic and just grow from it, that would be really beneficial. The problem is, and this is getting on a tangent and people may not like to hear this, but, you know, people seek out, like, it's called confirmation bias, right? Like, they seek out sources that validate their ideas and reinforce their ideas. And I think I used to get in trouble a lot when I was a kid in school because I would be told something and I would ask why 50 times. I have to, why? You can't do that. Why? Why? Why? And I needed to understand why there was a different way than what I thought or what the teacher thought. And once I did, I said, oh, okay, but I think we live in a time now where if anything goes against what you believe and how you feel, people
Starting point is 00:46:55 resist it. And so I think what we try to do here is question our thoughts, our beliefs, and what we, and the way that we would like to live and say like, oh, maybe there's a better way. Right. And I wish more would do that. Yeah, no, I love that. You spoke about the science earlier. You said there was a Dr. Simon. Dr. Simon cutting. Yeah. He's the scientist behind the strains that out of lunch, in University. Can you tell us more about the strains, like get really nerdy on us? Yeah. So the cool thing is the strains, there's bacillus subtilis, H.U. 36, which is Bacillus Indicus, and those are the two heavy-hitting strains. And those are the Bacillus subtilis actually is known for having antibiotic properties. So it actually has the ability to
Starting point is 00:47:37 get rid. That's the one strain that kind of helps get rid of the pathogenic bacteria in the gut. So bacillus indicus actually produces RDA levels of crotonoyes. So alpha and beta keratin, lutein, acesanth, zanth, zanth, co-Q10, all these really, really potent proby or antioxins are actually actually produced in the gut. And what's so cool about that is that's where your antioxidants need to be absorbed is in your gut. So really, really incredible strain. And that's actually, we did a leaky gut study on that, on our strains used in our product. Are you familiar with leaky gut? Sure. Okay. You could speak more on it. though, please for our audience, because maybe they don't know.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Okay, so leaky gut is super easy to understand because it's exactly what it sounds like. We have an intestinal wall, and the wall will kind of break open if your gut is unhealthy. And when that wall opens, when little tight junctions open up toxins from your gut actually seep into your bloodstream, and that starts this inflammatory response by your immune system. So now, you know, leaky gut is really, really the most devastating thing for our gut, for our overall health. It is the driver of all chronic diseases from, in fact, there was a study on Alzheimer's showing that the number one driver of Alzheimer's is heightened LPS toxins in the bloodstream.
Starting point is 00:48:52 And LPS toxins just stands for lipopolysaccharides. They're basically toxins that are not really problematic in your gut. It's not until they go into your bloodstream that they become very problematic. So leaky gut is really one of the biggest drivers of, you know, heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's dementia, you name it. I mean, it's the driver of pretty much all disease out there. The study that was done on the strains that are used in Just Thrive actually took 100 college students. They tested to see if they had LPS toxins seeping into their bloodstream. Otherwise, if they had a leaky gut. 55% of those healthy college students had a leaky gut and didn't know it. They're estimating that 80% of the adult population has a leaky gut and doesn't know it.
Starting point is 00:49:34 I'm sorry, how exactly do you get tested for this? You test the LPS toxin level in your bloodstream. Is that through blood, though? Yeah, but it's not readily available. Like, you couldn't go to Quest and, you know, find that out. So this was done in a research setting. So they basically gave them a challenge meal. So they gave them one of Taylor's lunches and something like that.
Starting point is 00:49:54 I don't know that it was exactly Panda Express, but some type of fast food meal. The first day that they did it, they actually tested it and found that, like, is it, 55% of them showed leaky gut, and those toxins going into their bloodstream. then they sent them home. These were like college-age students, sent them home, no other dietary lifestyle modifications at all. They came back after 30 days after there was a placebo group and the treated group. The placebo group, they gave them a meal after the end of 30 days,
Starting point is 00:50:21 gave them another one of these challenge meals. They found out that, and then they tested their LPS toxins, and they found out that the placebo group actually had a worsening effect. And there was now more LPS toxins in the bloodstream. but the treated group. The treated meaning they gave them a probiotic. Yes, they gave them the spore-based probiotics that are used in Just Thrive. And they actually saw a 42% reduction in LPS toxins in the bloodstream.
Starting point is 00:50:45 So this is the first study of its kind on leaky gut. I mean, there is no other pharmaceutical or probiotic that we know of that has a study that is showing that it's actually reducing the LPS level. And the only way you're going to reduce the LPS level is that you're tightening those tight junctions or tightening up the intestinal cell wall. I've been wanting to ask this question the whole time. Can you speak on Candida? I know a lot of people struggle with it. And maybe some people, like Michael, don't know what that is. So maybe you could tell us. Well, Candida is actually a part of our normal gut flora. So it's not everybody's like, oh, we got to get rid of candida. You don't want to ever get rid of all of candida. It's just an overgrowth of yeast. And so, and basically the cool thing about the strains and just these spores is they have the ability to actually get rid of the overgrowth of the candida. So candida is so problematic because that's why people sometimes have sugar cravings. It's because they have this overgrowth of candida. And then you have more sugar cravings and it makes the candida worse. So we just want to make sure that you, what the strains do that are really unique is that they have
Starting point is 00:51:45 the ability to competitively exclude the candida overgrowth. So they're not getting rid of them entirely. They're just getting rid of the overgrowth of the candida. So if everyone in the world were to take a probiotic today, we would say take one after your meal and that's it. It's all you need to do. Yeah, I'm not saying it's going to make you like your gut 100% healthy. We have other products for people who have, you know, more serious conditions and, you know,
Starting point is 00:52:11 other or want to further support their gut health. But it is, it's ground zero for anything, anything. So let's say you're eating really clean and really healthy, but your gut is inflamed. Your gut won't absorb those nutrients if your gut is inflamed. So that's why it is where you start with health. And, I mean, I've heard so many other doctors like be interviewed on podcast and they'd say, If you were stranded on a desert island, what three supplements would you take? And every single one of them would always say a probiotic.
Starting point is 00:52:39 The other two may be different, but they all would say a probiotic because we now know that the gut dictates virtually every aspect of our overall health. If you were to take two other supplements and you were on an island, what would they be? Magnesium. I think that's super important. Why magnesium? Because most 90% of the adult population is deficient magnesium. And it's really good for calming effects, which,
Starting point is 00:53:02 I could always use. Yeah, we all could. Yeah, exactly. This entire year, the entire population of the world this year could use a little bit of calming. Yeah, exactly, exactly. Vitamin K2, which is another. And I feel like that's a little self-serving because we have a vitamin K-27 product, and that's a little bit outside of the gut space.
Starting point is 00:53:17 But vitamin K2, its job in the body is to actually direct calcium where it needs to go. And it's a really, really important. We could get vitamin D from the sun. If I was stranded on Desert Island, I would be out in the sun every day and getting my vitamin D. but the vitamin K2, you need that really. That's really important for directing calcium where it needs to go. So do you have a routine that you do every day with your vitamins? We need like a whole other show to get into that.
Starting point is 00:53:42 Is it that gnarly? I do. I get, you know, I take a probiotic, prebiotic, which we have, which is the other difference with the prebiotic is that most prebiotics, they have the tendency to not be able to distinct. The job of a prebiotic is to feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It's like the fertilizer for the garden. The problem is many prebiotics can't distinguish between good bacteria and bad bacteria.
Starting point is 00:54:05 So sometimes they could actually make a problem worse. When somebody's taking a prebiotic, they actually can make a problem worse. So ours are very specific. They are targeted where they only go after the good bacteria. So they're only going to feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. They won't feed the pathogenic bacteria in the gut. I take our IgG product, which is really great. It's an immunoglobulin product.
Starting point is 00:54:25 I take vitamin D, especially now I take vitamin D. I take vitamin C. I'm a huge fan of vitamin C. I take ficentin because that's a neurotropic. That's good for brain health. And I have to say you look amazing. Oh, thank you. That's a huge compliment coming from you. You have three kids. Three kids. You look amazing. Oh, thank you. Your skin's glowing. Your hair is beautiful. You look amazing. Oh, my God. Thank you. It's very nice. Can you recommend a book, a resource, or a podcast that's brought you a lot of value? Starting point is 00:55:15 And I know I've told so many of my friends about it and they've really, really loved it. And she's very well researched. And so I think that is another reason. From a personal level, I love the book for agreements. I'm sure everybody's already heard of it. but I just think it's worth rereading. And I think every kid that graduates from college should read it and keep it on their nightstand and read it all the time
Starting point is 00:55:33 and live their life that way and not take things personally. And then just I love, you know, Wayne Dyer. He's like, when he passed away, I thought a member of my family passed away, but he just taught so many great lessons. And I was lucky to be born into a family that was super positive. My dad would wake me up every day saying, you're getting better and better every day. And he read Wayne Dyer back in the day.
Starting point is 00:55:53 And he's the one that introduced me to Wayne Dyer. So, you know, I think that just living your life really in a positive, mindful way is really beneficial. And I mean, that's what I think has helped me in my life and just going forward. Can you leave our audience with a motto? Oh, absolutely. I have a motto. I actually have it sitting in my kitchen. It's everything works out perfectly for me. And it's a pretty bold statement, right? But I don't mean to say that everything is how I wanted it to work out. It's just that I believe that everything works out perfectly for me and that maybe sometimes it doesn't work out the way I had wanted, but in the
Starting point is 00:56:30 end, it will work out perfectly. So I just, I love to, I think if we all just say that and believe it and know that everything works out perfect. And you have to say the for me part. So everything works out perfectly for me. That reminds me of Armagh Fati. How do you say it, babe? Yeah, Amar Fati. It's like basically the love your fate. Yeah, it's a very stoic philosophy. Yeah. To love what actually happens compared to what you actually want to happen. Absolutely.
