Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas. It is time for candy. But the kind of candy I like has fiber in it. That is SmartSweets. We're going to get into it on this episode, but they get all nostalgic on you because they have gummy bears, peatrings,
Starting point is 00:00:16 sourblast buddies, and sweetfish, but without added sugar, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. You guys can use code a skinny 15 for 15% off your order of $30 or more on smartsweets.com. All right, let's get into the show. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you alone for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the skinny confidential, him and her. Aha. We got the dirt. And it's never slipped once.
Starting point is 00:00:56 And they know no matter what they tell us, whoever it is. It doesn't matter if you're a celebrity or not, you know. you gain that trust and then you happen to walk out looking real good and feeling real pretty. So, you know, it feels good. Yeah. And we don't exploit the celebrity situation at all. A couple days after Christmas, everyone's hung over. Surprise, I'm not.
Starting point is 00:01:15 I'm dead sober. I'm not feeling too good. Yeah, I'm sure you're not feeling too good. We got an episode for you on a Friday, which is always fun. The entrepreneurs and stylists behind the mega brand 901 salon are on the podcast. This has been a request from so much. many of you guys who are hairstylists or in the hair industry, they have really created this insane cult following. They know how to brand. They have their line in common, which I'm obsessed with
Starting point is 00:01:42 their magic mist. And they also have raindrops, which is like this showerhead that you screw on your shower that makes your water good for your hair. I mean, I'll let them explain it. I'm probably flubbing it. But Michael's already tried to steal mine from me. There's nothing more I like than good hair, Lauren. You know that. I got to keep it on point. We even talk about, old blue in this episode, which is kind of amazing. If you don't know who old blue is, old blue is a reoccurring character. Old blue's been retired. We have to do a little funeral for them. Anyways, we are doing a giveaway at the end of this episode and there is some major stuff 901s giving away. But just so you guys know, I am very much into the raindrops situation.
Starting point is 00:02:19 It's this shower head, like I said, that filters your water and makes it really good for your hair. A little bit more time, everybody. A couple more days at the end of the year. We all made it. We all made it. We're all still standing. Barely. Michael feels like he's really trying to make it right now when I'm literally nine and a half months pregnant. It's been a tough nine and a half months. I know everybody's concerned. You know, I'll be okay, Lauren. I mean, yesterday I just was like, you know, I'm about to pop. I'm about to roll over. And this motherfucker is talking to me about, you know, his... Well, yesterday is yesterday, Lauren. With that, everybody, let's get into the show. Let's meet Rihanna and Nikki, the two badasses behind the brand 901. This is the skinny confidential, him and her.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Okay, so I am so excited to have you guys in studio because I was reading an article and I felt like it really resonated with me. You guys were saying that you waited to put your brand on anything product-wise because you wanted to be really strategic of how you rolled out a product. And I found that really interesting because I'm in the same boat right now. I don't want to just white label something and slap a label on it. I feel like I've built my brand for 10 years and like I really want to be methodical and thoughtful about how I put something out. So can you sort of speak, I guess, on how you built the brand and then how you decided to incorporate product in that strategic way? Yeah. So I think it kind of starts back to when we first opened the salon and at that time 10 years ago, wow, it's been 10 years.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Holy shit. It's still crazy. Every salon out there was named after the owner. I'm not going to name the names, you know the names, everyone had their name on the front door. And we worked under Silas who had their name of the front door. And we knew when we wanted to start our own company, we didn't want our name on the door. I wanted the name to literally mean nothing, like not hair beauties, nothing. And we just wanted it to like mean nothing. You either knew about it or you didn't. So we called it 901, which was just the address. And I think that alone is what allowed the brand to grow into what it was because it wasn't reliant on us. You know what I mean? So like if for some reason her and I suck, the team is still amazing that can still continue the brand to go on as it is.
Starting point is 00:04:40 But as far as rolling into what in common and raindrops and all that, I mean, again, it's its own entity and it has its own legs and it doesn't need to be reliant on Nikki and Rihanna to create this. We want it to have its own entity. And creating that, you just need to make sure all the boxes are checked before you actually roll out. But I think it's about really believing in it too. I think when you just white label on something, you're like, oh, okay, that's definitely an easier route, I think. I think, I don't know. Financially, probably better, too. But we are so passionate about what we put out that, you know, you're proud of it. And it's a lot of work from the ground up, but it's worth it. Well, it's smart. I mean, I think a lot of people in this day age, they get their ego involved, and they think, okay, this is, I've built this personal brand. And so now everyone needs you under me. And like, what they forget to take into account is everybody else is building their personal brand too. And you don't want to attach your brand to somebody else's personal. It's the same thing with your media, right? It had to be bigger than Lauren and it's actually not dependent on us at all. Right. It speaks to everybody or, you know, anybody that's associated with it. And I think that unless you're Ralph Lauren and you can actually like create Ralph Lauren style and a whole category, it's, and that's an extreme outlier. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:05:53 It's smarter to make things bigger than you. Absolutely. And that's the plan. What are some other things that you guys have done to stand out in the space that are different? Don't you have a beauty school online? We do. Yeah. We have a ton of education.
Starting point is 00:06:04 So Rihanna and I are problem solvers. Well, we think we are. Yeah, we think we are. Whenever there's a problem, we're like, we got to solve this. Like, how do we make this better? Like, with in common, like, people's hair breaking. We're like, this is crazy. Like, people need to have healthy hair.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Like, what the fuck? So with education, it was like these kinds of things. classes where they would do these like avant-garde like weird bobs and weird colors and it just wasn't relatable or prettier things that clients were asking for. So there was like a lack of inspiration for stylists who want to do pretty hair, long, beautiful, blonde hair or whatever. Pretty hair. So we started doing classes. People travel from out of state and they come to our Academy at 9-11 Westbourne. And we just accept 10 people per client. class and it's hands-on. So they work on live models, which is a big deal because a lot of
Starting point is 00:06:58 classes, they make you use a dollhead, which is like, you're not really learning. And then, you know, people can't always afford that. So then we rolled into the online education through our beauty coach course. And each week there's a new episode that comes out. We have guest artists that come and teach too. And, you know, we just keep solving problems. Well, what I think you guys have done really well, too, is that you can recognize a 901 girl. I call it, I made up this name. Tani would curl my hair and I call it the vertical curl. Okay, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:29 So it's like, it's not a curly Sue curl. Or as my friend Jackie Schimmel would say, a John B'nai-Ransy curl. Ooh. It's more of a soft, long vertical curl. Yeah. And I think when you see girls, you know that that's a 901 girl. So was that part of the plan to like brand the clients almost? No.
Starting point is 00:07:51 No. Honestly, like, we got on Instagram early on not really knowing what it could do for us. And we just started posting. We have so many, like, gorgeous clients. And we just started posting them. And yeah, just kind of morphed into that. And people were like, I want to be a 911 girl. And we're like, you do.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Sweet. That's cool. I love that. And the gray wall that you have. The gray wall. Which is, by the way, just outside. I mean, you know, it's just outside. Yeah, but everyone knows.
Starting point is 00:08:20 So if someone's at home and. let's say they're in Minnesota and they want to do the vertical curl themselves, how would you walk them through it? I think by this time they know how to do it. You can't assume. We can't assume. Walk them through and you. You can't assume. I have no clue how to do it. See, he wants to know. He wants to do it to his pubes tonight. Yes. With old blue. With old blue. With new red. It's got really scratching with your red can paste that you bought 8,000 bottles because you thought someone was going to copy. I have to be their best customer. You're going to be stalking that company.
Starting point is 00:08:53 That's amazing. Hey, we know people over there, so we'll let them know. Tell them, yeah. The vertical curl is basically when you're curling your hair and you're not allowing the curling iron to turn horizontal, right? You're keeping that curling iron vertical at all times. I can definitely show all of you at home right now, but you can't see me or can you? Well, you can you? Well, you could show it when this episode goes like, maybe you show it on your Instagram story.
Starting point is 00:09:18 But the curling iron is parallel to your face as opposed to perpendicular, right? Correct. So that's all you do. You just hold it to your face and hold the girl. Don't do that. You'll burn your hair off like that girl. Oh my God. You should see me doing my own hair. Bleak. Blik. Let me ask you both this. I want to get some context here. How did you two first get connected? Like, we got to go back. We got to go back. Because if you told me it's 10 years in the salon, did you guys know each other before that? Oh, yeah. Okay. Let's go back. Let's get the story. Take them back. I want to know everything. Ten years at 901. Three years at Ken Pave's salon. Almost a year and a half at. Cush Salon, and all the way back to 15 years ago, where we were assistants together at Fred Siegel Beauty in Santa Monica. And where did you both grow up? She grew up in Reno, Nevada. Reno.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Yeah. I grew up in Oxnard, California. And we had a lot of similarities back then. And we learned that early on, and we clicked, like, right away. Like, what do you think some of those similarities are? Oh, you know, we were cheerleaders growing up, things that we probably can't talk about on this podcast. Oh, sure you can talk about. Anything.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Well, it's like family things, you know. Yeah. Yep, that was similar. Just a similar upbringing. The boy situation was similar. Yeah, similar upbringing. Yeah. Cuslers, you know, like always just figuring it out.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Yeah. Yeah. We clicked very early on. It's pretty cool. So how do you guys make it work now that you're working together? Is there any issue or is it easy? Because I know with Michael it's been a lot of challenges. Well, see, I mean.
Starting point is 00:10:46 It's been a dream. You guys also live together. I don't have to go home with her. Oh. If I had to go home with her too, I mean, that'd be rough. It'd be dreamy. What are you talking about? Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Oh, my God. Among other things. Hopefully. Oh, do you know how much shit would we get done if we lived together? We'd get so much shit. We'd probably open up to be more businesses. That's true. Because, you know, you can't get away.
Starting point is 00:11:10 You can't get away. What are some challenges that you guys have had working together as friends? The thing that really stuck out to us when we were working together in the beginning of 901, it was probably into year three where we're 50-50. Like we do everything, right? We go to every meeting together. We go at every party together. We network together. We do everything together because we are 50-50 into this company. About year three, we figured out that's not the way to go. The way to go is, hey, Rihanna, what do you do best? Write down what you do best, okay, or what you enjoy doing. I wrote it down. She writes down what she enjoys and what she does best. And oddly enough, it was yin-yang,
Starting point is 00:11:46 and instead of me falling asleep at the lawyer accountant's meeting, she's over here killing it and I don't have to go to the meeting anymore. And instead of her dreading to go out to this event that we should go to and network, she stays at home and I go out and network. We figured out what we were good at. You're a more like me. Yeah. We figured out what we were good at and we let each other flourish on that instead of making each other do everything 50-50.
Starting point is 00:12:11 That was like a huge light bulb for us. It's super smart. And that probably helped our friendship a lot too. That is really, really smart to double down on your strengths. We call it defining the roles. Like, we have our sides of the street, both of us, and we don't cross. Well, luckily, you guys figure that out because we didn't for three years. Well, a lot of business partners don't, and their businesses shut down.
Starting point is 00:12:30 So you guys have so many celebrity clients. Like, when you go in there, you see someone. And you guys, I think, have done a really good job about, you know, sometimes people are, like, pushy with the celebrities. You guys have just, you're mellow. You give them a safe space, I feel like. Yes, that's it. So why do you think you, like, gathered such a big celebrity? following? Is it just because the talent? You think it's because you give them the safe space? It a medley.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I think it's both. I like the medley word. I haven't used that word in a very long time. I'm going to start using it medley. And I think trust, for sure. We could write books about things that we know. Really good books. People tell people cutting their hair and coloring their hair, everything. We got the dirt. And it's never slipped once. And they know the matter what they tell us, whoever it is. It doesn't matter if you're a celebrity or not, you know. You gain that trust and then you happen to walk out looking real good and feeling real pretty. So, you know, it feels good. Yeah. And we don't exploit the celebrity situation at all.
Starting point is 00:13:25 I don't even know how to call the paparazzi. I'm sure I could fucking Google it, but I don't even know how. Google their number. Somehow Alfred's really got them lined up, so people come in. Like, I don't really know. But, yeah, we've never exploited them in that way. And don't force someone to take a picture on that gray wall if they don't want to. Usually at this point in time, it's like, ooh, I feel good.
Starting point is 00:13:45 let's go take a picture. They're ready to take a picture. They want to take a picture, which is cool. But yeah, trust and they're people just like us. They really are when it comes down to it. What are the trends that you're seeing that celebrities are going towards right now? Yeah. Where are we in? We're coming into. I know you just did Taylor Swift's Lover album. Yeah. Which is so major. Oh my God. I mean. First time she ever did any color like that. So it was pretty rad. It was pretty old. I mean, that was amazing.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Yeah. It was funny because when we first did it, we did it. We did. it too pretty. I did it that day on set. And it was too pretty. She's like, no, this is too pretty. Like, let's make it a little more edgier, a little more like, you know, grunge. And I'm like, all right, and here we go. Taylor Swift Grudge. I know. But it was cool, though. She wanted to, like,
Starting point is 00:14:29 switch it up and just make it a little more fucked up in a good way. So the dip die. So is that the trend, like a little bit more grunge? Dude, well, I feel like... With the celebrity girls, it's tough because the trend ends up being what they're working on. True.
Starting point is 00:14:44 So whatever movie they're working on or whatever project, they kind of set the trend based on that. So we kind of have to go off that. I mean, every once in a while they have some downtime so they can play around. And I feel like they always want to do fun colors when they have a little downtime. But yeah, like Emma Roberts. I mean, she's constantly shooting brown, blonde, now we got to go red, you know, whatever it is. So it just kind of happens that way, too, depending on what they're working on. Hold up. We got to talk about smart. sweets. If you are a listener of the skinny confidential him and her show and you have not tried smart sweets, you are missing out. You're missing out so much that Michael and I are even adding smart sweets to each gift that we've wrapped. Like we're putting them on top under the bow because we know everyone needs to try them. If you've gotten a package from a team member in the mail like a giveaway, you know we even add them to the giveaways. They have gummy bears, peatrings, sourblast buddies and sweet fish. But without all the nasty. rat added sugar, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. I do that combination where it's like one
Starting point is 00:15:49 for you, one for me every time we put it. So if I put in your stocking stuffer, I'm also stuffing myself of them. P-trings. I'm big on the P-rings. Big on the P-rings. We're stuffing our family's stocking this year with tongue scrapers and smart sweets. That's the way to go. While I'm also stuffing my face with smart sweets. But you're scraping your tongue afterwards. So that's good. I first heard about smart sweets about a year ago. I fell in love with them because they were candy and they taste just like all the nostalgic candy, but they're full of fiber. So you get all this fiber. And like I said, it doesn't have all this added sugar. Then I started bringing them in my purse into the movie theaters and Michael started eating them. I mean, if you're going to go and you've got
Starting point is 00:16:27 to get your fiber in, which is not always the easiest thing to do, you may as well do it with some sour blast buddies, you know, maybe some peatrings. Get your family some peatrings, put them on top of your gifts. They make the cutest little addition. They're bright Instagramy colors. Everything is so Instagramy. I love them so much that I eat. I. I love them so much that I even invited the founder on the show. I want to talk to her about how she did such an amazing job with branding and marketing and making these candies. Sour blast buddies. Try to say that three times, the tongue twister. They're good. All right, you can use code skinny 15 for 15% off your order of $30 or more on smart suites.com. I would recommend buying a lot so you can put them on top of your
Starting point is 00:17:05 presents. Everyone will be eating them. You can't go wrong. They ship to the continental USA and Canada. that's skinny 15 for 15% off your order of $30 or more on smartsweets.com. And now it's time to get back into the show. Okay, here's my question that I always wonder, and some of my friends say it's just a wig. But how do these celebrities go from these drastic colors and still maintain the integrity of their hair? Right here, baby. You're looking at me. What's the tip, though?
Starting point is 00:17:33 If someone lives in Florida and they don't have access to you, what can they do? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. do it in a few days. Yeah. Like, don't try to tackle it in one day. The problem for me is that these girls are on tight schedules, so they only give me a day. So if I can't complete what I got to complete in a day, I'm screwed, right?
Starting point is 00:17:57 So if they have to go from Burnett to blonde, I mean, I just, I got to make it happen. We took Selena when she went that really blonde and short. Nirvana blonde. Took us, what, 10 hours? Yeah. Oh, my God. Together at the same time. Tag team at the same time. It was like Oliplex the answer.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Like, besides that, like, is there any, like, really good tips that you could give someone besides just waiting or is it really just time? Well, good news. Remember, we're problem solvers. Yes. So we came out with something. Love it. It is called Crystal Cashmere that literally restores hair in one treatment. The more fucked up your hair is, the better the results will be.
Starting point is 00:18:37 No joke. Crystal cashmere, it's a two-step process. You put an oil on first. You'll let it sit anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. You rinse that oil on. You put the cream on. You'll let it sit 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your hair. And that's it.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And you reconstruct the hair. Have we not done that on you yet? I don't think so. You need that today. I need that right now. Yeah, just come with us. Go get some crystal cashmere. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:01 You can. I need that right now. You really can. For sure. Yeah. And after. This is all my hair, by the way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:06 I was looking at your hair. I was like, is that extent. No. That's all your hair. Baby hair for being pregnant, like for the last two years it felt like. Okay. I need to come in and get some fucking crystal cashmere on my hair immediately. So the woman in Florida tell her hairstylist, let's go platinum blonde, but I need you to do crystal cashmere on me off.
Starting point is 00:19:29 And it'll make it a lot better. Oh. A million times better. It's incredible. I can't wait to do it on you. Okay. What about wigs? Wigs are another great quick, easy way to do it.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Do you like wigs? I did a wig for Halloween. Yeah. And I loved it. Yeah. I wanted to leave it on forever. Remember when you did the wig when we did Sexy Stranger? Yeah, we did Sexy Stranger.
Starting point is 00:19:46 You know what we went to the worst place? What's it called again? No, it's not the worst place. Yes, it was for Sexy Stranger. It's not good for Sexy Stranger. George Ovaldi. You know, it's all the way in... Santa Monica.
Starting point is 00:19:56 No, it's like Malibu type area. But the tables are this close. So we're sitting next to another couple, like, closer than we are. Yeah. But we're both in Sexy Stranger. I was like in a cowboy. You were so boring. He wore like a burlolo and...
Starting point is 00:20:10 It was not like... It's actually strange when you're supposed to go to the bar and like pick her up. Right? But we were like sitting at a nice candle at dinner with a bunch of people like dressed as freaks. That's amazing. The funniest thing is I was pregnant then and didn't know it. And I was dressed as Ivanka, who was a working girl from Russia. And it was a lot going on.
Starting point is 00:20:28 There's two people there was like very elderly couples on our left and right. That's amazing. Anyways, I did a wig that night and the wig was great. Yeah. And also I was. asking a friend, I was like, how do the Kardashians get their hair so it's so in front of their forehead? Do you know what I'm talking about or do I sound crazy? Not not at all. We all know you check it off. Is this like clippins or is it glue? What's happening there? I mean, there's a
Starting point is 00:20:52 couple things. It could be a wig. It could be a piece. It could be a spray color to just fill in all the scalp to make it, you know, darker. It could be eye shadow. You can take eye shadow and fill in areas to make it darker. Joan Rivers has an eyeshadow. which I think should be your next. You should do a 901. A hair shadow. Hair shadow. I would wear it, definitely.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Joan Rivers has this one that I bought before to fill in the ponytail a little bit. Michael's like, what the fuck are you talking? Okay. So I just, I want to call you guys out on something that you do really well, and that is training. You guys are so gnarly when it comes to training your employees. I love that you know this. I saw how Tani had an assistant.
Starting point is 00:21:36 I know she told me that she had. assisted for you guys for a really long time before she branched off on her own. You've done a really good job, I think, with building a team, which is sometimes I struggle with that. Michael's very good at it. Do you have any like tips on how you laid that out to work so seamlessly? Well, step one is you can always teach someone how to cut in color hair, but you can't teach someone how to be a good person, hands down. So no matter what business you're in, step one, are they a good human being because mom and dad has to do a pretty good job in order for you to work at 901, kind, have the same core values, helping each other's, teamwork, you know, that is number one
Starting point is 00:22:17 for us. And I think with that being said, you can take everything else to like the next level, you know, but the actual training part of it. You know who's hardcore is Rihanna. She's the mean one. I'm the nice one. So I'm more of the nurturer where I'm like, okay, well, let's through it like this and she's like, what do you wear? Do not come to work wearing that. You need to dress apart. We're on Melrose Place going up, which is great because they do need to be told. And I'm glad I don't have to do that. I mean, I need a little more of you. I'm a little bit more nurturing, I think, as well. But I think I explain why. It's not, I don't ever just like be a dick and just throw them off guard, you know. They're like, oh, I think it's good to set the
Starting point is 00:23:01 standard. Like this is the standard of whatever shop or business you're running. And like, as long as you've explained the standard, it's not a negative thing. It's what you want for your business. And more importantly, you got to lead by example. So if I want you to come in with your hair and makeup done every day, I need to come out with my hair and makeup done every day. If I need to look the part every day, you got to look the part every day. You know what I mean? Super important. I mean, so many leaders, they want to lead from the back. You got to lead from the front. You got to leave from the front. Michael's, Michael's thing is leading from the front. He's very, very into that. Well, you can't ask people to do things if you're not willing to do them yourself.
Starting point is 00:23:30 100%. What are the requirements to become a stylist at your salon? It's not a joke. It's not a joke. Yeah, it's not a joke. Is there like a apprentice period? I think like the program, like how long does it take? Yeah, I mean, everyone's different. So if you come on and you're an assistant first, you assist anywhere from two to four years. Total. That's a long time. It's a college. It just depends. It's a college. I think Tani assisted for. She says to me, I think for like two, two and a half years. But then prior, she is. It's a longer. Yeah. Yeah. But here's the thing. They go on the floor. These kids haven't made. They're making bank. Yeah. They have a clientele. They can tackle anything. No matter what client sits in their chair, they either, one, know how to do the color and the cut or to handle their shitty personality per se if they're mad at their hair when it's really their life. You know what I mean? But those are the things that we try to teach when they actually come to us. And we prefer to grow within. I mean, we've hired some stylists, some outside stylists. Some have worked, some haven't. Because, you know, some people are just to the beat of their own drum and they don't fit in the family and that's fine. To me, two to four years does not sound like a long time to acquire a lifelong skill from experts. Right? That sounds like very reasonable.
Starting point is 00:24:44 No, you're right. It's not. And you're right. But when you think about a hairstylist or beauty school dropout and stuff like that, I think that's when you're like, oh, shit, two to four years. You know, that's where I think things get like. Well, I think if you want to work in a prestigious salon, like yours where you're having the best clients in the world come in. like there has to be a certain standard and people should be willing to to work for it. Or they don't have to. And listen, it doesn't have to be two to four years. If you're fucking amazing and we see that, we're ready to like bring you up faster and make things happen.
Starting point is 00:25:09 It's not like you have to be this amount of time. But it ends up being that time. It's not just about, you know, learning the skill of doing hair. We teach them how to run their business, you know, how to deal with certain clients. And not even crazy clients. Like you guys had Caroline Stranberry in here, right? She's my client. She's hilarious, but like teaching them what she needs.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Yeah. You never know what you're going to get, you know? So just, you know, customer service is huge for us. Like whatever they need, just get it. What if you have an asshole client? Because I know that I'm sure you do in L.A. have a couple assholes. For sure. They're making a lot of faces right now.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Yeah. They're putting both have thumbs up. What are you about that blacklist? We personally. don't have any asshole clients, but there's some that have come to the salon for sure. And are now blacklisted. Yeah, they're just a headache and they want to complain
Starting point is 00:26:04 over stuff. And it's like they try to get money back when their hair looks amazing. Rianazal, oh, really, your hair is green? Well, the wall's green too. So you photoshopped your picture and the girl never came back again. Like, don't try to hustle a hustler, girl.
Starting point is 00:26:20 Ooh, okay. People go to that kind of truck. That's kind of shit. It's not cheap as well. staying in their financial lane. They want to be a 901 girl. Well, that comes with a cost, right? So they're just trying to get in, which sounds crazy that that's even a thing.
Starting point is 00:26:37 But then they want to like dispute charges. And we're like, no, no, no. You can't do that. Everyone who walks out of your salon looks fucking amazing. Let's be honest. So I'm really interested in hearing about this thing that you put on your shower. Okay? So I want to know why you invented it and what it does.
Starting point is 00:26:56 and why someone needs to put this on the shower head? Because it's very intriguing to me. So the honest to God truth is that when we worked for Ken Pavis, I went to New York and spent a week there helping him launch one of his brands. And I was working in the Henry Bendel's window. I mean, could you just imagine me like doing hair right in the window? Anyhow, I came back and everyone's like, oh, you colored your hair brown. I'm like, huh?
Starting point is 00:27:24 literally because of the water in New York my blonde hair turned brown so we're like oh my god this is terrible like there's got to be like a shower something but what was like why does it do that because the water there's a buildup of so many minerals or old pipes a lot of the buildings
Starting point is 00:27:41 in New York are from the 1800s and they have old pipes that who knows when they've changed your hair dry brittle brassy can make it brown depending on whatever's in the pipes and then we started noticing seen our clients here in LA. We're like, what the fuck? Like, I just made you so bright blonde. Like, why when you come back is it so dingy? So we're like, aha, we had an aha moment. And so we researched
Starting point is 00:28:08 shower filters. There was one available. It was Jonathan Anton had one that was sold at Sephora. But it looked like a thermos. It was hideous. And with our high-in clientele, they're like, oh, my husband just remodeled the bathroom. There's no way he's going to put that in there. Okay. So we're like, hmm, okay. So I'm talking about it. And my husband's friend, who happens to be Chinese, his aunt owns a water filtration company in China. And he's like, let me just have her send over some stuff, whatever. We checked it out. We loved it. We figured out a situation with her and raindrops was born. So when I take this home, because you guys gifted me one, I can't wait to try, Michael, first of all, don't even think about. going in my shower. I want to see what it's like because... No, the key to marriage is two separate bathrooms.
Starting point is 00:28:59 And so many people have said. Yeah, and he's been in my bathroom. He's like spreading Lamar on his legs last night. On his legs. Yeah, he's like, expensive. No, you're like using the gel on your elbows and like... This is an exaggeration. If I get a paper cut, my wife will call my mom and be like, his arm is gone.
Starting point is 00:29:18 I used her lamare once or twice because it was there. And listen, I'm going to use this thing now, too. Anything is about Lamar's when he gets in the bed. He thinks he's like in on the secret and he got it, but it has such an unique smell. And I'm like, what the fuck are you doing? Pregancy knows is a real thing. She can smell everything. Like she knows it by you make one false move.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Yeah, don't fuck around with me. I say you should never cheat on a pregnant person because they can smell it and they're clairvoyant. But that's a different podcast. So if I put this in my shower, I feel like he's going to try to sneak in. What is it going to look like when I put it on? Is it cute? Like, open it.
Starting point is 00:29:50 Pull the ribbon and pull those slots out. I'm wondering if you can actually install it or if I'm going to have to be the one to install it. You know what? That's a great question. And then I'll be able to... She definitely can install it. We provide you with a showerhead, but you can use your own. Okay. And that's the filter.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Yeah. Let me see. So you can attach your own shower head to that. This is genius. Dreamy, right? Yeah, this is genius. This fills up over time and you have to change it. Correct. Yeah. This is a great Christmas gift.
Starting point is 00:30:15 It is a great Christmas gift. Yeah, this is a really good Christmas gift. Like, I feel like we should get this for, like, all the girls in your family. See, the best in this. See, the best inventions come out of necessity with people that are actually trying to figure things out. Yeah, totally. They've done that. And your magic mist is something that's the only hair product that I've been using every single day.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Same. Me too. I use that in the D.P. Hugh, apple cider vinegar. You'll use it on your daughter, too. I will. My daughter loves it. It smells so good. Michael said I smell like seventh grade, which we dated in seventh grade, and he loves seventh grade.
Starting point is 00:30:46 That's what you always tell me I smell like seventh grade. This is a nostalgic smell. That's so cute. with a daughter here. My daughter's awesome. I mean, she's so much fun for me. I had all these ideas. I was like, I'm really worried.
Starting point is 00:31:01 She thought it was a boy at first. I'm like, okay, I'm going to raise this tough boy. And then if I was a girl, I'm going to be the biggest softie. Oh, for sure. She's going to hate me because I'm just going to spoil the little girl. Yeah. So my daughter's name is Parker and her thing right now. So she's 19 months.
Starting point is 00:31:14 You guys, I'm in it. Two under two is like real. Wow. And her thing, she loves to dance. So she goes, doddy, dance. And she puts out her hands, and then I like dance. And it's so sweet. And she does whatever she.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Oh, for sure. I do whatever she says for me to do. And Rihanna doesn't even like kids. I don't really like kids. But I love Parker. I get that. I wasn't the most maternal person. I still am not the most maternal person.
Starting point is 00:31:41 You will be. Really? Yeah. And listen, right before the baby, you're going to wake up panicking. I don't know what the fuck to do. I was like. that. And then all of a sudden, they're just here and you just know. It's weird. You just figure it out. It's like an animal. They just know. No, you really will know. You're an animal. I promise you.
Starting point is 00:32:01 I keep telling myself, people have done this before. It's true. And you guys are smart. So then you got pregnant again. Accidentally. Yeah, we weren't trying. And so surprise. Surprise. That scares me a little bit because how come everyone gets pregnant right after they give birth? You're so fertile. easiest thing. You better get that penis away from me. That is scary though because if you're just like, okay, you try to plan it and then it's just crazy. Well, your doctor will recommend putting you on the pill. I was like, no, it took me four years to get pregnant with my daughter and I had to do IV if I'm not getting on the pill. Wait, I don't want to go on the pill because it gives you melasma and it makes you gain weight, I feel like.
Starting point is 00:32:41 So it's like you just got done being pregnant. Women have to do everything. You literally have to sit there. One night of margaritas that we could be back in it. You're just be your mean and finish your thing. Be careful. Be careful, guys. Yeah. Ferd or mortal. I've heard that from so many people.
Starting point is 00:32:56 That's true. And what was your experience with like breastfeeding and all that? Because I don't know what I'm going to do yet. Hold that one second. I got to use the restroom. I'll be it back. Oh, he has to use the restroom again. I mean, literally he just spent the night the other night at our house, you guys.
Starting point is 00:33:10 And he clogged the toilet. And he didn't use poopery. And we have it in every bathroom. We have it in every bathroom. And Taylor couldn't even. lift his finger to use poopery. If you guys have a friend like Taylor that comes over to your house and clogs your toilet and makes the bathroom just smell rancet, then you need poopery.
Starting point is 00:33:29 In fact, you need poopery even if you don't have that friend. Everyone should have it in every bathroom. Maybe it's you. If you're wondering, do I have that friend and you can't think about it? Maybe it's you. You know, that old thing if you got to find the sucker at the poker table and then it's you. Yeah, it might be you. Poopery is taking the stink out of the thing we all do.
Starting point is 00:33:43 And by talking about it, by doing it, and by transforming it from a crappy experience, literally, into a positive one. Thank God for Puperee, because when Taylor clogged that toilet, I was in there with Puperey's pink citrone, spraying it high, spring, low, spraying it under the toilet, spring it in the toilet,
Starting point is 00:34:00 and it works. Like, let me tell you, it works. It's a blend of strawberry, citrone and rock candy that will leave your bathroom smelling like cotton candy. I'm telling you. Your guest will think you shit candy. Guys, there's no downside to this.
Starting point is 00:34:12 There's only an upside. You want to know how Lauren and I keep it spicy? Well, this is one of the key components. Listen, doesn't matter. Friendship, relationship, intimate relationship, add poopery to the mix and protect all of it, right? Like, nobody needs to be heading in there after you do your business and experiencing what you leave behind.
Starting point is 00:34:28 I'll just be honest. No one wants to smell the smell of shit. People want to smell rock candy and cotton candy, and that's what poopery does for you. And again, if you have a friend like Taylor, you need this. You need this in every bathroom. I'm just saying. You guys, listen, put them in your house, put them in every bathroom,
Starting point is 00:34:43 carry them to the office, do whatever you got to do. Don't end up in a situation like we did when your producer comes over to your or your friend or whoever and just demolishes it. This is why we have it right there hard to miss. With that, go to poo-pery.com and use code T-S-C-20 for 20% off your purchase of $25 or more. That's P-O-O-P-O-P-U-R-I dot com and code T-SE-C-20 for 20% off your purchase of $25 or more.
Starting point is 00:35:06 And let's all pray that Taylor's in the bathroom using his poopery because if he's not, he's going to lose friends. I wasn't one way or the other. I was like, it's either going to work or it's not, and I'm not going to fucking stress about it. people put too much pressure on themselves. And like, honestly, there's so many great formulas out there. I'm not against formula. My milk happened to come in at the hospital. My daughter latched on. It was a very, like, natural thing for us. And it was the only natural thing for us because, like I said,
Starting point is 00:35:36 I had to do IVF and whatever. So I actually did breastfeed her for six months, which was not a goal. I wasn't trying to be a hero. It just worked out. If it's tough, he can go on formula. Like I'm not, it's just do whatever works for you. Was IVF a whole journey? Yeah. It's gnarly? It's not.
Starting point is 00:35:55 That was actually the easiest part. It was all the stuff prior. Like using Clomed and doing IUI. What is that? What's Clomid? It's just like a drug you take to help you ovulate. It was just, it was a very long journey for us. Well, then I'm so happy now you have two.
Starting point is 00:36:11 Be careful what you wish. Maybe you'll have three. No, no, no, no. My husband's getting fixed. Oh, he's getting fixed. Right away. Yeah. He's getting sniffed, though.
Starting point is 00:36:20 I'm making him get snipped. I can't wait until the day you're fixed. Did you know that? Chris, did you hear listen up? He knows. He knows. Really painful. You know what?
Starting point is 00:36:28 I don't give a fuck. Are you fucking kidding me? Are you fucking kidding? I'm sitting here with fucking cancels. I feel a billion pounds like I'm wearing a fat suit. My ariolas are on the floor after I just got a boob job. I have pregnancy mask. I don't give a fuck if it really hurts for two minutes.
Starting point is 00:36:46 I literally, the fucks that I get are so empty in this barrel. All right. I did a misstep, you know, so you can pull it back. I'm going to turn, switch directions. But, yeah, I just heard that way. That's what I told Chris when he said. Eight and a half months ago. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:02 It happened to mind. My dad got one. They said it wasn't going to do that. You guys can talk about the two minutes of pain that you've experienced. It's not two minutes as well. But it's not, it's not nine months a while, but it's as well. I'd love to see you squeeze a human out of your penis hole. I know people that have done it.
Starting point is 00:37:14 And then then the wife changes her. her mind and then has to get reversed. Maybe I might do that. That sounds nice. That's thrown at theiatric or two. Yeah. Yeah. And by the way, if your birth plan, if you have one, I didn't really have one, doesn't
Starting point is 00:37:29 go as plan and you end up having a C-section, it's fine. I have no expectation. I had a C-section. It's fine. Now I'm doing a scheduled one. Yay for me, moving on. So I think people like scare you and they're like, I'm going to see-section or something. It is what it is.
Starting point is 00:37:43 And you just deal with it. And it's fine. I'm going with the flow. Okay. People have done it before. Okay. Switching gears to social media because I want everyone to follow you guys. What is the strategy on Instagram?
Starting point is 00:37:54 Because you guys have done it better than a lot of other salons. There's a strategy there. I mean, it's not like you guys just slap a pickup. This is very true. This is very true. I mean, there's many strategies to anything how I think everyone's Instagram. You line them up and shouldn't do two blondes together if you can't or, you know, do two different types of waves, if possible. Short than a long, you know, extensions versus a cut.
Starting point is 00:38:19 You know, just kind of showing all. Yeah, you do. Right. And I think if you're not, because I'm not, you know, for your media, I'm not. That's not true. You're creative. Not in that way. And I think if you're not, you have to be self-aware enough, like, I need to bring somebody
Starting point is 00:38:30 on who is. You guys both seem very creative, so it doesn't seem like it's going to be an issue. But for someone like me or a lot of other business operators that aren't creative, like, bring somebody on. Dude, bring somebody on, especially, like, it's a lot of work. And especially now, I mean, when Instagram started, what was it, 2011, I think, So we started back then, of course, her and I were doing it. I'm like, oh, it's your turn. She's Oh, it's your turn. We had to take turns doing it. And then finally we're just like,
Starting point is 00:38:53 we had our friends start doing it. And that was helpful. And then we're like, okay, well, now we need to grow up more. So we finally got a social media company. And you guys have your own personal Instagrams too, which I think is really smart. You each have your own. And you're getting married. Are you so excited? You know what? There's a lot that goes into a wedding that I didn't realize. I never dreamt of my wedding day or anything like that. So I never had any expectations. But I have to say, it's like I'm literally talking with a smile into the microphone.
Starting point is 00:39:25 With so much that's going on with work and all 87 businesses that we have, when I get to like sit down and like work on the wedding, I'm so happy. It's like fun. It's exciting. I get a pick what we want to do. And like, I like it. Where are you getting married? In Mexico over near.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Toloom. Oh, we got married in Mexico. It's the best. It's so good. We did too. We just said to everyone, if you can go great and if you can't go, you can take us to lunch. Yeah. And 50 people.
Starting point is 00:39:53 Oh, you take. Easy. Yeah. It was just like a weekend of just. That's a dreamy. A lot of drinking. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Getting married is fun. People put such, like, an expectation on it. It's kind of like birth. Like, there's such expectation. Yeah. If you go into it without expectation. Absolutely. And you just have fun and you know it's a party.
Starting point is 00:40:11 You got to go into life without. expectations. You got to go into friendships without expectations. You have to go into relationships. Obviously, you have your standards and you won't accept people treating you shitty or whatnot. But, like, I think that's where so many of us, we have these expectations of anything, how my business is supposed to go, what I'm supposed to get on Instagram or whatever. And that's when you get all funky inside is because your expectations weren't met for whatever. You've got to just go with the flow. It sounds like a fucking hippie. But it's true. You create something that's not real and go with the flow. You don't get there and you're disappointed.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Yeah, absolutely. I agree with you. So leave our audience with three hair tips. It could be anything, and it could be anything from putting castor oil on your hair. Just like three unique beauty tips that they can do at home for your hair. Use the same comb for 20 years. Number one thing, ladies and gentlemen, put down the flat iron. It is the devil.
Starting point is 00:41:07 It is frying your hair. Put it away. a year. Try it and your hair will grow long. That's a good one. That's actually a really good one. Put down the flat iron. Put down the flat iron. Try it out. I challenge you all. Yeah, that's good. What else? I'm not trying to promote our shit, but I have to say, dude, magic mist is fucking magical. It really is. If you do need to blow your hair out, you can prep your hair with magic mist and protect from heat. It detangles. It adds shine. It's just amazing. But my favorite little tip, I wish can give all your viewers a magic mist that would be great maybe we can come up with a code or something
Starting point is 00:41:45 we can do a little giveaway yeah we have to because okay so this is my favorite thing that i figured out with magic mitts i call it the triple layer so you are in the shower and you should actually try this on your hair too okay triple layer oh yeah i love that so in the shower you do your host system we have a beautiful amazing treatment line system try it check it out out of the shower get your hair out of the towel put magic mist all over. When it's about 50% dry, do another layer of magic mist and scrunch your hair. Okay? And then when it's completely dry, do the full layer all over. Scunch the third layer and scrunch it. You will have the best natural beechy waves that are healthy, shiny, and textured, and soft. It's so dreamy. And you don't have to use any heat on your hair. That wasn't a quick tip,
Starting point is 00:42:33 but I love it. It's such a good one. I have to share with the world. What was it? What's the third? The third one. You know what I love is the sunglasses trick. That's my favorite trick. Dude, you want volume in your bangs? All you got to do is when you get out of the shower, put your sunglasses on and push it forward and walk around and go get your coffee and then your hair dries like that and then...
Starting point is 00:42:51 But you have to have bangs, right? No, no, no, no, no. Like, all the hair if you want that whole front. Be careful. Michael will be walking around the fucking house tomorrow with sunglasses on. I can't wait. Well, he already has a bouffant that's perfectly quaffed in the best volume. So I think we're okay with Michael.
Starting point is 00:43:04 A boo font. Holy shit Bufant You know what? I almost wear a hat today But then I was like I got to go Yeah, good for you

Starting point is 00:44:30 Super simple. It used to be at Incommon beauty. We dropped the beauty. And we just got in common. That's the magic mist. That's the magic miss. I'm obsessed with that. And the last thing we didn't even talk about too much, but it's kind of awesome. It's not kind of.
Starting point is 00:44:42 It's very fucking awesome. We have a charity. We have a beautiful foundation where people can donate their hair. You can donate your old extensions when you take them out, your old clip-ons. And we can put them on hats for little kids that lose their hair from cancer and don't really have the money to afford a full wig. And we can give them hats with hair. and we are in the process of making a good handful of wigs to be able to give away to kids that don't have any hair. That is amazing.
Starting point is 00:45:12 Michael, let's shave your head for that. Let's grow it out and shave it. Your hair would really... You know what? I have a really awkwardly small, weird head, and I would look terrible. But I can cut a lot of it off. I don't want to cut all of it off. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:26 You're going to make me look bad in front of the charities. Yeah, no. I was like, what a dick. How do people find your charity? It's at Beautiful underscore Foundation and you spell beautiful B-E-E-Y-O-U-I-T-F-U-L. I love it. Yeah, I do right. Sometimes I really fucked up with spelling.
