Starting point is 00:02:46 Canada's trade fight with the U.S. just escalated again, and Americans could fill it in their wallets. I think the biggest thing, because Canada is one of our biggest trading partners, and one of the biggest goods that we import from them is oil. and petroleum, and so you're going to see a lot of higher gas prices. And a traveling nurse is now on trial for a Los Angeles crash that killed six people. She should be in jail, convicted, and sent to prison for the rest of her life. We'll tell you how fast prosecutors say she was going.
Starting point is 00:03:17 And two mothers killed their children and both claimed severe mental illness. But what happened in their courtrooms was very different. That illness is supposed to be taken seriously. It's that when it's black women, we are viewed as supposing to be so strong. It's Thursday, September 10th. From the Black Effect podcast network, I'm Mimi Brown, and here are the day's biggest stories. Stay with me. Canada's retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of American goods are now in effect.
Starting point is 00:03:56 And we're talking about products people buy every day. Milk, perfume, video game consoles, golf clubs, fishing rods, steel, aluminum, and some clothing are among the products being hit with tariffs as high as 50%. Some cheese, carpet, household appliances are being hit with 25% tariffs. Other industry products face 15%. And so here's how we got here. Trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada fell apart last month. The Trump administration then imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion.
Starting point is 00:04:28 worth of Canadian goods, including dairy products, furniture, clothing, fishing equipment, and other products. Canada promised it would respond dollar for dollar. And now it has. Fruits and vegetables, you're going to see some higher prices. I think the biggest thing, because Canada is one of our biggest trading partners and one of the biggest goods that we import from them is oil and petroleum. And so you're going to see a lot of higher gas prices. In addition to that, we're going to see, you know, prices in terms of cars. Because with the U.S. MCA and that trade agreement, a lot of the cars are being produced. A lot of parts of the cars get produced in Canada, in Mexico. And now that those supply chains are getting disrupted, that's going
Starting point is 00:05:09 to lead to higher car prices. And this matters because U.S. and Canada do hundreds of billions of dollars in trade every year. Canada's new tariffs make American products more expensive to sell in Canada, potentially hurting U.S. companies and farmers that depend on Canadian customers. And the back and forth can also raise costs for businesses that rely on products and materials moving across the border. And the trade fight is already escalating again. The Trump administration announced it will ban most Canadian alcohol, some dairy products, and motorcycles from entering the U.S. beginning September 29th. President Trump is also moving to keep Canadian products out of large, long-term U.S. government contracts. And there's another deadline coming.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Trump's previous threat to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, and auto parts to 50% beginning January 1st remains in place. So Canada now has retaliated against the U.S., and the U.S. has already responded again. And a traveling nurse is now on trial in Los Angeles accused of causing a crash that killed six people, including a pregnant mother, her unborn baby, and her 11-month-old son. Her name is Nicole Linton. This happened back in August of 2022 at Slosson and Libreya in South Los Angeles. Prosecutors say Linton was driving her Mercedes at 131 miles per hour when she ran a red light and slammed into a busy intersection.
Starting point is 00:06:42 They say this was not an accident. Prosecutors told jurors Linton was upset with coworkers in planning to quit her job at Kaiser Permanente, where she was working as a traveling nurse. They say she got behind the wheel angry and pressed the gas pedal to the floor. Jurors were shown video of the crash in his aftermath. Thick black smoke, cars and debris scattered across the intersection, blood on the pavement, and an infant's car seat overturned in the street. Prosecutors say the impact was so violent that the 11-month-old was
Starting point is 00:07:13 thrown from the car into a nearby parking lot. His mother, 23-year-old Ashley Ryan, was more than eight months pregnant. She was on her way to her final prenatal appointment. was killed. Her boyfriend, 23-year-old, Reynolds Lester, was killed. Their unborn baby girl, was also killed. And two other women died in the crash, six people in all. Linton survived with only superficial injuries. And as this case finally goes before jury four years later, people in the community say families have been waiting a long time for accountability. Nicole Linton was selfish, had a temper tantrum, and drove through a intersection. at over 100 miles an hour with no regard for human life.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And that's why she should be in jail, convicted, and sent to prison for the rest of her life because the sloths and six, their lives are gone forever. But Linton's defense attorney says what happened that day was a medical emergency and not murder. Her attorney says Linton suffered a seizure moments before the crash and lost control of the car. Linton had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had previously been hospitalized for mental health issues and have been prescribed medications. But according to testimony, she had not been taking those medications for years.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Paramedics who treated Linton after the crash had previously testified that she appeared confused and couldn't remember what happened. One EMT said Linton asked whether she had killed or hurt anyone and then became extremely upset. But prosecutors say the physical evidence tells a different story. They say Linton's Mercedes stayed center in a curving lane as she approached the intersection. Evidence they argue shows she was still steering and had some control of the car.
Starting point is 00:09:01 A doctor who treated her immediately after the crash also previously testified that he found no evidence of a neurological episode. Prosecutors say Linton had time to break, stop or swerve. Instead, they say she accelerated to 131 miles per hour. Linton now faces six counts of murder. You've heard the chaos. Now you can see it. Hello. Oh my gosh.

Starting point is 00:13:55 And lastly, you may have been following this case, the Lindsay Clancy case in Massachusetts. Clancy admitted to killing her three young children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. Her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible for what she did. Her trial lasted about six weeks. Jurors heard extensive testimony about her mental health from doctors. doctors, psychiatrists, family members, and other witnesses. And last week, after more than a week
Starting point is 00:14:23 of deliberations, the jury deadlocked 11 to 1, but judge declared a mistrial. But Clancy's case is now putting a new spotlight on another Massachusetts mother whose case has been striking some similarities. Her name is Latarsha Sanders. Sanders is black. She was convicted in 2022 of killing her 8-year-old son, Edson Marlon Brito, and her 5-year-old son, Lasson Brito. The boys were killed inside their family's Brockton home in 2018. Sanders' defense also argued severe mental illness and psychosis, but here's the major difference. Her jury was not allowed to see thousands of pages of mental health records documenting her condition after the killings. Those records included evidence of hallucination, paranoia, and schizophrenia.
Starting point is 00:15:09 An expert who examined Sanders concluded she had been severely psychotic around the time she killed her sons, but that evidence was kept from the jury. Sanders was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and received two mandatory life sentences without the possibility of parole. Now compare that with Plancy. Her jury was allowed to hear weeks of evidence about her mental health and her defense
Starting point is 00:15:33 that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. And these cases went through the same courthouse, the same judge, same Plymouth County District Attorney's Office, but what their juries were allowed to hear was very different. Clancy's case also dominated national headlines while Sanders' case received far less national attention. Legal experts say that comparison is bringing attention to a larger issue whether the mental health of black women is often overlooked, including inside the criminal justice system. What's supposed to happen is whether it's a white woman or a black woman, that illness is supposed
Starting point is 00:16:09 to be taken seriously. It's that when it's black women, we are viewed as a white woman. We are viewed as a supposing to be so strong that we can endure things like twice the size of a man. And if it's a white woman, she's a delicate flower. We both are fragile. We both experience postpartum depression. And now Massachusetts' highest court has ruled that Sanders' mental health records should have been allowed into evidence. The court unanimously overturned her conviction, finding that keeping those records from the jury
Starting point is 00:16:41 hurt her ability to present her mental health defense. So after being sentenced to two live sentences without parole, Sanders is now getting a new trial. The district attorney's office said it is reviewing the ruling and determining its next steps. And Clancy's case isn't necessarily over either. Her mistrial does not mean she was acquitted. And Clancy's case isn't over either. Her mistrial does not mean she was acquitted. Prosecutors can retry her and her next court date is scheduled for later this month. So these are still two very separate cases involving. two mothers and five children who were killed.
Starting point is 00:17:16 But they are now being examined side by side because of what one jury was allowed to hear about mental illness and what the other jury was not. That's your front page.
