Had enough of this country?
Ever dreamt about starting your own?
I planted the flag. This is mine. I own this.
It's surprisingly easy.
55 gallons of water, 500 pounds of concrete.
Or maybe not.
No country willingly gives up their territory.
Oh my God.
What is that?
Bullets.

We are the Breakfast Club.
We got two special guests in the building.
Two guys that can definitely kick your ass.
We have Anthony Johnson and Chris Weidman.
Did I say it right?
Weidman.
Weidman.
I don't want to get beat up in here.
Get his name right before he comes and puts some move on you that you can't get out of.
Good morning, guys.
Good morning. Good morning.
What up?
Now, you guys are fighting.
And I want to know the first thing.
Why UFC?
Why put your body and your face and your arms and your legs?
Do all that.
You get that question from all the time, don't you?
Why you ain't doing anything?
Because I ain't big enough.
You don't have to be big.
Yeah, you can be in a different weight class.
Oh. I just like
competition, so that's just who
I am. Anything that's, you know,
that can possibly hurt you, I'm
down for it, besides bungee jumping and skydiving.
I'll definitely try it.
I always wondered, did you guys grow up
beating people up in school? And somebody said, hey man,
stop, you know, just wasting your talents.
Go do something.
Yeah, we were probably pretty good in high school with that stuff yeah i was i was good i never
been in a fight really until out of high school really yeah like in the street or
general i was just always athletic and just tough you know being a kid growing up in the country i
mean i fell out of trees and all type of stuff like that and I still live, so I was like, why not
try something? You're from Georgia, right?
Yeah. What part of Georgia? Dublin.
You raised on a dirt road?
Nah.
He was raised on a dirt road.
He tried to bond. Nah, I got you.
Nah, I'm like Damaris Thomas.
Plays for the
Denver Broncos. He's from my hometown.
He does MMA. Does he do MMA?
No.
One of those dudes?
No.
For training?
No, he doesn't.
Well, not with me at least.
And then Eric Walden plays for,
I think he plays for the Colts now.
Now, Anthony, you the top-ranked guy, right?
You were supposed to fight Bones Jones.
Yeah, I was supposed to.
But then he went and did cocaine, right?
What did you do?
What was it, coke?
It was a hit-and-run things. It was a hit and run situation.
It was a bunch of things.
He did some things, but, you know, that's just things he has to deal with.
You know, now I have Daniel Cormier who I'm fighting,
so that's what's my focus on right now.
Are you disappointed?
Yeah, I'm disappointed because, you know, when you get to this level,
you want to fight the best of the best.
Absolutely.
And even though John isn't here right now,
he's still the best of the best in my opinion. So I still have mad respect for him. I you want to fight the best of the best. Absolutely. And even though John isn't here right now, he's still the best of the best, in my opinion.
So I still have mad respect for him.
I still want to fight him.
You know, it's nothing personal.
It's just I want to see if I can beat the five-pound king.
Do you think he'll fight again in the UFC?
I think he will.
You don't want to be on top and then get booted like he did
and then not finish what you started.
So I think he's going to come back even stronger.
How long do you take off between fights?
A month.
A month?
Yeah.
Unless you get injured.
Unless you get injured.
It all depends, man.
It all depends.
Sheesh.
When you look at somebody like Bones Jones,
they say he did have a little druggish.
Don't you feel like you've got to have some type of vice
for what y'all do
to take the edge off?
Nah.
I think you need
to support yourself
with good people.
Yeah, that's it.
No.
You need to surround
yourself with good people.
I mean,
I think we're all
capable of doing
stupid things.
So you gotta be smart
enough to surround
yourself with people
that aren't gonna
put you in those situations.
And it's not easy.
It's easier said than done.
Now, do you beat
somebody until they say
uncle or does the ref stop or you could possibly kill somebody they'd be punching people
in the face i mean it's a controlled environment it's a controlled environment you know you got
you the opponent and the ref the ref isn't going to let you take too much damage unless he
absolutely knows that you can take it you know i've seen some guys get beat up and just keep
going you know and those are the toughest guys to fight i hate fighting guys like that You know what I mean? I've seen some guys get beat up and just keep going.
And those are the toughest guys to fight.
I hate fighting guys like that.
Now, Chris, you yourself have said that after an injury,
you come back stronger because your bones are actually stronger after you've had certain injuries, right?
Yeah, I mean, your bones are stronger,
but also anytime you have a setback of anything,
any part of life, you have to learn from it.
And so I think having injuries is is one way of doing
that you know uh you know becoming better from a setback sometimes that prevents you though from
having that fight that you anticipated having because they can't wait on you obviously when
you get injured and they're like okay yeah well my fight actually had to get pushed back because
i got injured i fractured my ribs and so but thank god we were able to hold the fight together and
still i'm still fighting vito on May 23rd.
So it's good.
Why do you think the UFC isn't as big as boxing yet?
Because it's way more exciting.
Well, at least, I'm not going to say, it is way more exciting than, like, the big fights like the Pacquiao, Mayweather stuff.
But it seems like people aren't as.
Well, I feel like that's all you have, though.
Who else is there?
In boxing?
I feel like MMA is bigger.
Boxing has been around for so long.
You got Canelo Alvarez. Boxing has been around for so long.
Boxing has been around for so long.
The world knows about boxing.
We're still very new because when we tried to come in here,
we told the security guy at the front desk,
we're with the UFC.
He said, USC.
We were like, this is still a new sport.
We've been around for how many years now?
Like 15, something like that.
Y'all can't have fights in New York, right?
Hang on, let's get something straight.
Boxing is not fighting.
It's just one element of fighting.
It's like saying wrestling is fighting.
It's like saying, you know, karate is fighting.
We're not going to argue with you.
I'm just telling you. I know, I know.
I'm looking right at you.
I'm looking right at you.
If you say it's not fighting, we agree with you.
The UFC is exactly what you're allowed to do on the streets
without bringing any weapons to the game.
It's pretty much as real as it gets.
Boxing is just throwing your hands.
You can't kick.
You can't take the dude down.
You can't submit him.
I mean, it's really not fighting.
It's just one aspect.
It's an amazing part of it.
That's why when a young lady, what's her name, Ronda Rousey,
when she said she could beat Mayweather, I was like, she probably could.
She probably could.
I know she would.
Do you feel it's offensive when boxers are always like,
okay, I'm going to start doing MMA now,
and people feel like they could really just step into it,
and they don't realize it is a whole other. Boxing has a mentality just, you know,
they have so many people in their ears and saying,
oh, you're the best, you're the champ, you can do whatever.
I think they get it mixed up a little bit, and it drives them crazy,
so they feel like they're on top of the world whenever
They actually get in there with somebody that knows mixed martial arts and once they hit the ground
They're like a fish out of water. They don't know what to do from that point. They're done. Let me go back to boxing
Yeah
Brother from the hood learn how to do the mixed martial arts thing. Um
You know, I was in college and wrestling and I was finished with wrestling. I wasn't going to try and, you know, try and go out for the Olympics or anything.
So I just kind of fell into it.
Oh, you got belts and stuff?
Like a black belt?
No.
Oh, so you didn't go like the actual...
That's what I'm saying.
I never did any martial arts.
I never threw one single punch until...
But wrestling.
But wrestling, that was it.
But I'm sure martial arts helps.
So how did you get in?
Because UFC is not even here, right? Not yet. It's been. Yeah, same exact thing. I started with wrestling. But wrestling, that was it. But I'm sure martial arts helps. So how did you get in? Because UFC is not even here, right?
Not yet.
It's been.
Yeah, same exact thing.
I started with wrestling.
I wrestled throughout college.
And then I kind of grew up fighting a lot.
So I kind of always, even if I was to lose to a dude in wrestling,
I'd always be like, no, he definitely can't beat me in a fight.
So I just ended up feeling like this is kind of what I was meant to do.
And then I tried out for the 2008 Olympics.
I got injured before the trials. And I was like, let me try mixed martial arts.
I just fell in love with it.
When was the last time you fought, Chris?
Because you got bruises now.
I'm in a tough training camp.
This is actually from a headbutt.
Jesus.
Yeah, no.
It happens.
Training camp is, you know, you want your training camp to almost be harder than the fight.
So when you get in there, you know, you're not uncomfortable.
There's nothing that you haven't seen before.
How do you get the keloid things on you?
Oh, the cauliflower ear?
Cauliflower ear, yeah.
That's just, cauliflower ear is just like bruising.
So you could get it from boxing, you could get it from wrestling,
but it's basically when your ear gets hit, it swells up with blood.
And if it gets hit again and it gets hit again, it ends up calcifying.
And then your ear just.
It just looks gross.
No, that's crazy.
I mean, I just thought about it.
The training has to be that intense
because when you go actually fight,
it's on level 10 immediately.
I don't think there's one thing worse
in the world than to be in a fight
with a professional athlete
who's trying to take your head off and you're tired
and you can't do anything.
There's nothing worse than that.
You have to make sure you are training
like a crazy man so that doesn't happen. I think there's nothing worse than that. So you have to make sure you you are training You know like a crazy man, so that doesn't happen. I think I think about the money. That's what keeps me
You could give us ballpark because a lot of kids would love to know how much money do you get?
I mean y'all got the winners. So yeah, I mean to me is you know
It's like anything you have to start from the ground up. You might make 500 your first
Fight you could it could be it depends on the promotion you have to start from the ground up. You might make 500 your first fight. 500 your first fight?
It could be.
It depends on the promotion.
They can take your head off.
Yeah, yeah. It happens like that sometimes.
But then, you know, when you're at the top of the food chain,
you can make, you know, half a mil or more.
You know, it just depends.
Wow.
And I'm sure the trainer helps you a lot in the bedroom too,
like when y'all smashing chicks.
What's wrong with you?
Nothing, Chris. Nothing wrong with you nothing chris
who's the worst type of fighter to fight he says he'll never fight a mexican because he
says mexicans don't stop they don't stop now they have heart they got a hard head they got
hard hands you got to kill them that's the only way they're stopping i used to live by one actually
well chris and you're upcoming fight belford he fight, Belfort, he's Brazilian, right?
Yeah, he's my teammate.
That's Anthony's teammate.
Are you giving him some tips on how he can?
He did.
He did.
Oh, that doesn't seem fair.
Oh, and this is Aaron in Florida, right?
So, if we talk about this.
I know all of his weaknesses now.
But do you think that actually knowing things like jujitsu and stuff like that, that does put you at an advantage?
Yeah, I mean, you have to know everything.
To get to the top where we are at right now,
you have to know every single martial art that there is.
If you don't, that's how the guy's going to beat you.
So we have to be the best we possibly can and be masters in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and kickboxing,
boxing, and Thai, and wrestling.
So you have to be the best you can be in every one of those things.
And why is it illegal in New York?
Because it's so violent?
It was basically corruption, basically some dirty politics in New York.
And one of those guys, he's not here anymore.
One of the guys was holding him back from being voted for in the assembly.
He's not here yet?
He just got arrested.
I thought you meant like you killed him.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's no longer with us.
It feels like it's going to happen soon.
Yeah, it's going to happen soon.
It's going to happen soon.
They actually have a date set December 6th in Madison Square Garden.
Are you serious?
They put a date set, so they put it aside.
I want to go on that card.
I want to get on that one.
Yeah, sure.
Hopefully that will be happening.
What would that do for the sport, for it to be in a major market like New York?
I mean, this is the epicenter of fighting.
This is where Ali was at.
I mean, Frazier and all these other dudes in boxing,
their names were graced on that Madison Square Garden billboard.
And for us to have that there would just be amazing.
And for it not to be there is just insane.
We're literally allowed to fight in every other place in the world besides New York.
That's crazy.
There's something wrong with that.
Now, have you guys ever did this?
Like, my son wrestles, right?
And I always thought to myself, if somebody has you in the move, right, where you stuck,
why not tickle him?
Have y'all ever tried that?
Because your fingers is loose.
Y'all put him in the move for me.
I got $50.
Don't think about it.
You get in the movie and somebody tickles you.
That would look great on TV.
Please.
You don't have much time to think like that.
If I put you in a rear naked choke right now,
you're not thinking, let me tickle him.
He's not tickling.
A tickling movie.
Just for five seconds, put him in a rear naked choke.
I got it.
Now, how are the endorsement deals looking now?
Because I'm sure the endorsement deals are pouring in
because I've heard a lot of people say
they would come into Vegas to have meetings,
to endorse UFC fighters.mas just tapped uh hey that means that the middle of the day will not be rolling in like that everything is cool i should say you know right now um we'll see
we'll see how everything works out i think uh we we just signed with reebok pretty much so it's a
big change so i was actually there because that was during the Floyd Mayweather fight,
the previous one, a couple of fights ago when they were coming down
to try to sign the UFC deal.
Yeah.
So it's signed, I think, starting July 5th or 6th.
It's going to be set in motion where you won't see the UFC fighters out there
with all different types of sponsors anymore.
It's going to be just Reebok and maybe one or two that the UFC allows in the cage.
So it's going to be more like the NFL or more like the NFL basically, like where you're
sponsored by Reebok or Nike or whatever.
And once again, that's where it's tough because you have guys that have to start from the
ground up.
You know what I mean?
And of course, the lower you are, the less you get paid, but you can build up to where
you need to be.
But once again, you got to put that work in at the gym
to get where you want to be. Do they encourage
y'all to do things outside of the sport
to make the sport bigger? Because I
was talking about the NFL this week, and I said the NFL
is the greatest reality show on the planet.
Because you would think it was football season this week.
We're in the middle of the playoffs, NHL
and NBA, but all they're talking about is football.
So do they tell y'all to, hey, I don't know,
go get a girlfriend. You guys have some great reality shows for the UFC anyway it's a celebrity chick oh you
guys are both married celebrity chick I'm trying to keep my face out of the media as much as I can. Have you guys ever just went out and then got into an altercation with somebody that just didn't know was disrespectful like sometimes people are?
You know that's every guy's worst fear, right?
Absolutely.
Like to be in a bar and pick a fight with somebody you don't know that you have to fight?
Yeah, this is before I was a UFC fighter, but I was a professional fighter.
One of my boys who loves to start trouble Started in trouble with his big juice head
And my friend's way more intimidating looking than me
So the juice head didn't want any problems with my boy
He looked straight at me
He started coming at me because I look like nothing
Comes straight at me, throws a punch
I just throw him on the floor
And I start just embarrassing him
I just start slapping him in the face
I gave him noogies
Then he got back up
After getting embarrassed like that.
And I still wasn't mad.
It was just kind of funny.
I was just embarrassing him.
The bouncers were laughing.
Everybody was just letting it happen.
He gets back up.
He tries to throw another punch.
I'm like, are you kidding me?
Threw him back down on the floor against.
Did the same old thing.
Just slapping him on the top of the head.
Like, what are you going to do?
What are you going to do?
Is that Worldstar?
No, it wasn't there.
It wasn't there.
I guess because you know your power.
That was a long time ago.
Yeah, I'm not going to punch him in the face.
That's not going to happen.
I'm not going to joke about it.
And that was maybe like five years ago.
That was my last street fight.
I hardly go out anymore, but I always get asked that same question.
I always get asked, do you get messed with?
And not really.
No true.
Nobody's smart is really going to mess with us.
Because you don't look as big as him.
He looks big and broad.
You might be like
nah
but you gotta
you know button up
somebody might test you
one time
maybe with your lady
your wife
and say something
but oh you will
whoop their ass
so are the rules
are you allowed
to give a noogie
and you won't get
in trouble for that
I think if I'm not
gonna leave any marks
I figure I'm good
that's why I was doing that
a couple slaps to the face
a little noogie here and there
I think you're good
but if you start
punching the dude
and then he's gonna have
black eyes
or he's gonna to have brain damage.
Jesus Christ.
Brain damage.
Took it too far.
He's a violent man.
You don't know.
You don't know.
His head hits the sidewalk.
Do y'all have to register yourselves as weapons?
Because they always say that about boxers.
They got to register their hands as deadly weapons.
We're licensed.
We're licensed fighters.
So I think right away, I think that's pretty much the same thing.
You got your license. If you if you go to court
and you know if I beat up that dude and we and he's taking me to court you know
I know what I'm doing I know what my hands could do and I'm in trouble now
for I'm Anthony Robbo Johnson I had read an article where we've been following
the John bones Jones story where you had said that you felt like people were
trying to seem like
that fight that you're about to do is not legitimate because it's not him.
So can you speak a little bit about that and how important it is?
At the end of the day, Jon made his own bed.
You know what I mean?
And they act like Daniel Cormier and myself are not fighters.
They act like we're not legit fighters.
And if we don't beat John, it seems like it doesn't matter.
Well, that's not the case.
John beat himself outside of the cage.
You know what I mean?
And that's why he's not with us right now.
So they gave me and Daniel an opportunity to be number one now.
And we don't take any credit from John because he's still the best.
But people still need
to respect us
because we go out there
and we put on the line.
We're still fighting
for a title either way.
They can say
what they want to say.
We're still going to do
what we do.
They're going to love us
or they're going to hate us.
At the end of the day,
it doesn't really matter
what they say.
Wasn't John last fight
against Daniel,
if I'm not mistaken?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Are you guys all friends
with each other outside?
Like, I got to fight you, but we're cool. Yeah, because y'all fight, man. It ain't like, y'all like all friends with each other outside like I gotta fight you but we're cool yeah y'all fight man like y'all like try to
kill each other it just depends on like you know Johnny Daniel weren't friends
nah they hated each other yeah but me and DC are cool man DC are pretty cool I
mean we speak and then like I you know I call them up and you know ask them how
his day was on the phone anything anything, but we're cool.
It's got to be kind of rough, though, because you might kick it with him and see him with his wife, his kids, and now you're beating him up in the room.
I mean, it's weird because, you know, fighters have their own off switch.
Either you have it or you don't.
But, you know, it's just a business.
This is what we're doing.
We do it because we love to do it.
Just because we beat each other up in the cage doesn't mean we have to hate each other outside of the cage.
What about when you lose, though?
Is it easy to turn it off when you lose?
Yeah, it is what it is.
You have four losses.
When you lose, how do you get back up and be like, all right, prepare for the next one?
Because it's like that fight is always on, even when you lose.
And how did you lose?
I don't see you giving up.
That's why I don't know.
Well, if I lose, I'm just like, he was the better guy that night.
I did my best.
So I'm happy at the end of the day.
I mean, I'm disappointed in the results, but I'm still happy with myself because I did
the best that I could do.
So I don't put that type of pressure on myself that if I lose, it's the end of the world.
Are you scared to lose Chris?
Because you're undefeated at the moment.
No, I'm not scared to lose, man.
It's not an option.
I can't be scared of it.
It's not going to happen.
Don't you feel like, especially when you see things like up here,
before Floyd was fighting, everybody wanted him to lose
because they wanted him to have a loss.
Do you feel like people are like, okay, he's winning too much.
We need to see a loss.
Yeah, I mean, I got plenty of doubters and haters out there
that would love to see me lose.
But that's just fuel for the fire.
The great thing about doubters is that they're always going to be there.
So it's a good motivational tool to have. So I like to shut them up. But that's just fuel for the fire. The great thing about that is that they're always going to be there.
So it's a good motivational tool to have.
So I like to shut them up.
I don't think people want to see you lose if you're convincingly destroying people.
You know what I mean?
I think it's different with Floyd because he always got haters, though.
Yeah, and especially if you're undefeated.
People want to watch that fight. People think he runs overboard.
Yeah.
But he boxed, though.
Floyd doesn't run.
He's a good boxer. He understands. He's technical. He's a great defensive fighter. People think he runs overboard. Yeah. But he boxed, though. He doesn't run. He's a good boxer.
He understands.
He's a great defensive fighter.
Yeah, he understands the game.
But then you got somebody like Canelo Alvarez who goes in there and tries to knock your head off.
Or Triple G tries to knock your head off.
But he's not boxing.
He's brawling.
That's what he's doing.
Whatever you say.
I'm not going to disagree with you.
Watch yourself.
My new best friend.
My new best friend.
I'm not going to disagree with you. Watch yourself. My new best friend. My new best friend. I'm not going to disagree with you.
That's right.
Now for you, Anthony Rumble Johnson, you also were suspended as well, and now you're back.
Was there a time when you thought you weren't going to make it back?
What did he get suspended for?
Tell us.
You know, say it.
I don't want to.
It was suspected domestic violence, but the charges were dropped.
Yeah.
No, you know what?
During that time, I knew I didn't do anything wrong.
But whenever it comes down to something like that,
you just never know what's going to happen.
And I was depressed, I can't lie.
I was super depressed and just didn't know what was going to happen.
Because, you know, when anybody says, you know,
they've been hit by a male,
everybody automatically believes it no matter what and that's the part that that just killed me on
inside and you know I felt like a lot of people didn't have my back but once the
charges were dropped then all of a sudden everybody shows back up you know
he could fight again yeah we're friends know yeah yeah yeah so but at the same
time I also that made me realize who was really down for me and who wasn't so it
made me yeah and just open up my eyes even more but anything you do to a woman
is considered the mythic Bosco you just restrain her they're like he put a move
on her you put a hold on her you It's crazy. It's crazy.
Like I said, it's... No one wants to talk about this.
I know, but it's just...
Okay, let's move on.
But it's good to clear it up because sometimes it's out there.
Not even him.
No, I would even want to talk about it.
But it's just a sad thing that people can say something
and automatically everybody believes it.
No matter how the media wants to put it,
they're going to put it and people are just going to automatically think
that's how it went down
or that's what happened.
And once again,
as men,
we have to try and prove
that we didn't do anything.
So, and that,
that's, that's, yeah.
And that's,
we just feel helpless.
Yeah.
Now, Chris,
you said you didn't want
to talk about it,
but we have some stuff here
about you.
Bring it on, bring it on.
We all have,
we all have things. I'll have him bring us something about you. We all have things.
I'll have him bring us something.
I'm sure he could.
We appreciate you guys for joining us.
Good luck on the fight.
Thank you.
