Lauren came in hot.
Hey, y'all, what's up?
It's Lauren La Rosa, and this is another episode
of the latest with Lauren La Rosa.
This is your daily dig on all things,
pop culture, entertainment news,
and all of the conversations that shake the room, baby.
Now, you guys hear my bracelets
and, you know, all the jewelry and the things.
I'm dressed up and changing clothes
and doing all the stuff right now.
Because, well, first,
Whoa, whoa, whoa, let me slow it down.
I'm excited, y'all.
I'm sorry.
Let's check in behind the scenes of the grind,
because I got a lot to tell y'all behind the scenes of all of this stuff that's going on.
Let's get into it.
Back on the ground.
So, you guys may hear the jewelry moving as we figure things out in here.
I'm currently shifting over.
So I'm going from Breakfast Club vibes to now getting dressed to head down to Delaware State University.
my HBCU, my alma mater.
We are having a live conversation today.
So I'm in the midst of literally getting changed as I do so.
But y'all know y'all are part of my daily dish, my daily habit, my daily digestion.
So we had to check in before we headed on out of here.
I'm actually going to be in conversation with a person that we had on the breakfast club recently,
Deshawn Jackson, who is the head football coach at Delaware State University.
It was a big deal when Deshawn Jackson actually said yes to come into Delaware
State University. After such an iconic, you know, football career from the Eagles and, you know,
all the teams that he's played with, um, to work with our HBCU. Dion Sanders and all the work that
he did with Jackson State definitely set a precedent for these, you know, major names in NFL as they
retire to come back in and really make an impact on these athletes that are going through the HBCUs
who have just as much talent and smarts and wit and strategy to make it to the NFL as well.
Delaware State University has been impactful to me in like the life space of it.
I wasn't an athlete in school,
but I can only imagine being an athlete in having one of the greatest in the sport come back
and be your day-to-day mentor and your person that you are able to confide in as you figure out career,
but also the actual game of it, the practice, the playing.
And I say career because nowadays, but the time these kids are in college,
it's a full-blown career.
They're making NIL money.
They are living and fully providing for people that they love.
If they're doing it the right way, just off of the fact that there is platform and attention there around the sport that they love and the fact that they play.
So I'm always down to support Delaware State University in any regard.
It's our homecoming weekend.
We're kicking off homecoming week with this conversation.
But I'm 100%, 100% here for representation.
And what that means, especially as a person who graduated.
graduated from an HBCU and who understands how it changes your life to have people come back on campus.
I'm always back on my campus.
So I'm kicking that off tonight in conversation with Deshawn Jackson and his brother, Byron Jackson.
They have the documentary called Go Deep.
Now, the Go Deep documentary is about Deshawn Jackson's.
It's not even in full, honestly.
Like, they shot 35 years of footage and put it into, this is part one, we'll say.
Nothing, no other parts have been announced.
But I say this is part one because you have 35 years of raw footage that his brother shot throughout the course of, you know, them growing up because he's older, them growing up, Deshaun, you know, going to college, getting signed.
And just all the different life changes that they experience throughout that journey, including the loss of their father who was their biggest proponent in sports, coach them, work them out, help them make decisions about schools and contracts and so many different things.
So we'll be at Delaware State University kicking homecoming week off with some meaningful and powerful conversations.
And this event is free and open to the public.
But, you know, it also is something that will help to give back to the school financially and, you know, impactfully.
So I'm, you know, I'm excited to be a part.
Y'all going to be hearing about homecoming at least until about Tuesday.
Okay?
I'm going to be on the yard this weekend.
I'm going to grab some audio for you guys on them there.
We are about to live it up.
This is the one time of year.
if you are at HBCU graduate,
where you can kind of set life to the side.
You can be like, look, I know we got bills.
We get up early for work,
but let's just revisit a time
where things were more simple,
things were more fun,
and let's revisit that joy,
where joy was at the forefront of everything we did.
And it's a great reminder coming back
into the work we're following a homecoming weekend
like we're about to kick off
to be grateful and to be joyful no matter what.
Because college, I don't know,
your campus has just reminds you of that.
So, yes.
So that's where we are behind the scenes,
and you might hear some of click clacking and all the things this episode.
Just know, as I'm recording, we are figuring in our outfits.
Okay, that is what's happening.
Follow me on Instagram too and YouTube and TikTok, Lauren the Rosa.
I'm Lauren the Rosa TV on TikTok because we take you into the behind the scenes visually
as I'm doing all these things and, you know, the outfits and the conversations,
the impact, just the journey overall as I matriculate through this brown girl on her grind process.
So it's pretty cool to be a part.
Let's get into the latest, though.

Dear honies, this is goodbye.
In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author Patra Mather's and her
husband Michael nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know
that they had died by suicide.
By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead.
Next stop, Wonderland.
Patra and Michael were by all accounts, healthy, happy, and
love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind?
I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known.
I keep coming back to I truly hope that Petro was a thousand percent on board with the
plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible
from my mother's staff. I'm Leon Nafok. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview
everyone who got one of Patriot and Michael's letters,
as one married couple,
trying to understand another.

I'm former U.S. Women's National Soccer team player,
Carly Lloyd. I'm Fox Sports Reporter, Jenny Taft.
And on our new podcast, whatever it takes,
we're talking motherhood, marriages, careers,
and figuring out how to balance it all.
And we'll discuss the game that brought us together
because nothing is off limits.
Do you remember your initial reaction?
when Fox called you to be a part of the World Cup?
I was like, no, I don't want to do it.
You said no?
I played with players that didn't...
I don't think that they really, truly love the game.
I found the love with the ball at my foot.
But in my head, it was the long game.
It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox.
I'm going to go get some reps,
and I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it.
He said, this group of people will never be in the same room
as part of the same team ever again in your life.
And it is your job to make sure that you enjoy the moment.
You're proud of what you accomplish together.

The World Cup is over.
But if you caught the soccer bug and aren't sure what to do now,
check out our podcast, Big Kick Energy.
I'm Cameron Dicker, the kicker from the Los Angeles Chargers,
most accurate kicker in NFL history.
But I was raised on the soccer pitches of
Shanghai. And I'm here with Timmy Tillman, L-AFC star, grew up in the academies of Germany and now
under the bright lights of Major League Soccer. So, we know a little something about kicking
balls. Maybe you're new to the game or you're ready to take your passion to the next level.
Each week we'll tackle things like who's winning the Premier League this year. Playing like a number
10. Do you know what that means? Then we go over to France. Ligoon. Liga. Liga. He knows more.
He's better than me. What do you think is harder? Scoring a penalty kick?
or scoring a field goal.
He's in the NFL and I'm like, just a big fact.
I do another.
That's crazy.

Let's talk about being a part because somebody who wants no parts right now reportedly is Drake.
So there are a ton of reports out and, you know, I referenced the Rolling Stone one.
in a lot of my research and things that I look at
because I love how Rolling Stone is so detailed
in all of their reporting and their write-ups.
Drake is reportedly not submitting any of his three albums
that he just dropped.
That is Iceman, Habibti, and Made of Honor,
which were charting hits, especially Iceman.
It was all over the charts.
It took over the summer.
We'll not be submitting them to the Grammys this year
for any consideration from 2026 at all.
Now, this is not the first time that Drake has
done this, he is known to boycott the institution, okay?
He's been nominated so many times.
Let me look that up.
Oh, yeah.
So Drake has only won five Grammys.
His first win was for Best Rap album for Take Care in 2013.
He won Best Melodic Rap Performance for Wait for You with Future and Timms at the
2023 Grammy ceremony.
But, you know, it's very well known that he has not submitted and has free
frequently chosen to not submit for various Grammy years.
Now, I talked about the amount of nominations.
He's been nominated over 50 times.
He's been nominated 51 times, but it's only taken home according to reports.
According to actually, yeah, five Gramies.
Yep.
And the albums are eligible, too.
That's another thing.
You have to drop music within a certain time for it to be eligible.
So it's not that, like, he can't.
He's eligible.
He just doesn't want to.
But he did this in 2018 with more life.
He withdrew the submission for certified
Leverborn in 2022.
And then, well, honestly, never mind the following year he did the same.
Now, his joint album with 21 Savage,
her loss, was actually submitted for the 2024 Grammys,
but it lost Best Rap album to Killer Mike's Michael.
I'm not upset at Drake.
I'm really not upset at Drake.
I think with Drake,
and everybody has their own narratives and feelings about the boy.
That's what he calls itself, the boy.
and some of the things that he chooses to do
but I think Drake comes
from that school and I honestly feel like
my generation was the last generation
of it and he's a bit older to me
I feel like
where we stand it's like we were like
right like we were on
the internet but we were also in real life
it's like we had one foot in one foot out
and I think
even though Drake's not this
like hood rapper
I'm outside pull up on
me like that is that's not
how I think of a drink.
And I think that that's why he gets a lot of conversation around, you know,
when he switches in and out of like the different accents.
And, you know, he's from Canada, you know, so it's there.
Because people are always trying to figure out what is it that he attaches himself to.
I feel like because he sits in between that phase of internet and outside and having
to really figure things out in a real way, no matter who supported it or not.
Because Drake was the come up kid.
Like, Drake was really mixed tapes and doing so.
much to get on and then it finally hit and he took advantage of the opportunity because of that
I think that there's always going to be something instilled in him where it's like even if you don't
support it the right way champion it the right way I'm here at least I feel like that's the
moniker that like early Drake has had more recently I know when he did um too hard for the radio
love that song first of all that was one of my favorites off of Iceman but the too hard for the
radio song and then there's some other songs on iceman as well where he's talking about
basically like not getting radio play i'm like when did drake go from if you with me you with me if
you not you not but i'm still him to this person because number one drake is played all over
the dang radio like drake especially iceman janus shut the f up ran the radio too hard for the
radio was being played on the radio as well too drake runs the radio all the time whenever he
drops. Nokia when he dropped right after the Kendrick Lamar
situation. The beef with Kendrick Lamar ran the radio. There was a lot of
other conversations around him and narratives, especially when not like us
went on to win all of those Grammys. I believe it was five in 2025. Yeah, it was
five Grammys in 2025, which, you know, Drake references a moment from that award
show in his lawsuit against Universal Music, you know, and talks about
just how the song was able to be platformed, right?
I understand that eventually as an artist, there's a shift that happens.
Not what everybody, but with some artist where you become a bit jaded from your experience.
It's weird because I think when it comes to institutions and systems and Drake fighting back against them,
he's jaded, but he's like not.
I think when we see him sit down and like, you know, lean into like all the streamers
and remind us that he comes from this like very sketchy, awkward actor,
de Grassee kid who just, you know,
became this mega star rapper,
that is him going against the system
because as a rapper, you know,
it's the toughness.
It's, I'm hard.
Drake has always gone against the grain to certain extent, right?
Like there was just melody in his music.
He features a lot of new and up-and-coming artists
even before the world even fully understands
what those artists mean to the genre.
A lot of new artists, he's doing the same thing with the streamers.
I think that's his way of trying to signal to that
talent and young talent early on after institutions you don't need them your success is not is not
riddled on that but that's why I'm always confused with songs and things like not too hard for the
radio drop where he's talking about being banned from radio essentially which is not the case
like Drake is all over the place now I will say I do think that Drake would have been a very
strong contender this year for the Grammys now the official
recording academy announcements will not happen until November 16th,
2026 for the Grammy. So we don't know who is actually nominated for things, but
there are a few people that, you know, people will begin having conversations and expect
some submissions from and conversation around Jay Cole, the fall off, A set Rocky,
Don't Be dumb, Cardi B, am I the drama? Cardi worked hard this year. Kanye West.
wait bully
when did bully
when did bully come out
oh yes
Kanye did job bully this year
it was like the
wow you know so crazy
all of the drama
surrounding Kanye was
makes you forget that that was
and also too it just took him forever
to finally put the dang
album out
Don Tolliver too
Don Tolliver has been at the top of
everybody's expectation
nomination list this year
like he has been going
going going going
and I know that Drake is a huge supporter of Don Tolliver.
Don Tolliver actually brought Drake out in Canada recently.
Let's take a listen.
That was a cool moment.
Again, Drake's supporting, Don Tyler's not up and coming.
He's there.
But Drake's supporting artists where it really matters.
That's why, you know, I think, and I don't know, for some reason,
there has been this like, if you like Kendrick Lamar and you were honest about what happened,
but not like us, you got to not like Drake.
I like Drake as an artist.
I like Drake in the movement that he's created.
I understand some of the moment that he's created.
I understand some of the decisions that he's made around certain things,
for instance, like the one we're talking about right now.
But I do think that there are certain moments and points where I'm like,
when did we lose the Drizzie Drake who understood who he was and what he meant to music?
I think it's there, but I think all of the other stuff and the noise,
especially that rap battle, has really jaded that a bit,
especially when, you know, we continue to get songs about who did and did not support him during that rap battle.
At the end of the day, Nokia still did what it did all over the charts in the midst of all of that comeback story.
And I haven't come back.
Like, Drake never had to come back.
He never went nowhere.
He just lost the battle.
Even the headlines around him not submitting the Grammys.
People are like, well, you know, Kendrick Lamar won five Grammys for not like us last year.
That's probably why.
I'm like, no, Drake has been on some.
I don't need the institutions.
Y'all don't see me correctly anyway.
We'll see what happens, though.
This is all reported.
I did reach out for an official comment from Drake's team.
Crickets, silence.
I'll let you know if anything updates.

Now, speaking of music, my girl, Rihanna, is.
teasing us yet again, because Rihanna is having a conversation about music, unreleased music.
I think people always want to talk to Rihanna about certain things.
It's just how we go about the world.
We go about the world.
I don't know about you guys, but on the media side of things,
there's two things you want to know from Rihanna.
Who you wear and when is the music coming, period.
Those are the questions top of mind when talking to Rihanna.
So Rihanna was doing a TikTok live for her Fenty Beauty brand.
And during the live stream, here's what she was asked.
The unreleased songs are you sitting on?
Oh, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Okay.
If there are ten products in a vault, then I have at least, at least 17 false.
10 products in the vault
At least 17 vaults
That's a lot of damn music
170
That's almost 200 songs
Not my surprise
It has been years
Since Rihanna dropped an album
Rihanna hasn't dropped an album
Since Auntie in 2016
That was her eighth studio album
You guys will
I mean
I shouldn't have to say this
But just for a referencing point
So the work song
Work work work work work
That song came off
for the project needed me love on the brain came off the project now she has done um like some
like music stuff for films or she did lift me up in 2022 for black pantha wakonda forever
on that soundtrack but an actual album we have not gotten since 2016 now they said rocky it said
riana got the got the music is there she working on some things riana dropped like a behind
the scenes almost like documentary style clip where she talked about she did
fact that she was in the studio.
So, you know what I mean? She's working.
It's there. I just don't know when we're getting it.
And to be honest with you, and I say this every single time I talk about this, I don't
know what a Rihanna sounds like today.
Rihanna is a mother now.
She, I mean, Fenty is huge.
She's a billionaire, an estimated network of approximately $1 billion, anywhere from $1.4 billion,
according to Investopedia, okay?
a large part of that
I mean you have it breaks down into three things
Her sources are wealth are Fenty Beauty
That is her primary source of wealth
She has a 50% stake in her cosmetic brands
That she owns with LVMH
LVMH are they also do like you know
All of the luxury cognax and Louis Vuitton
There's a lot that is housed under that
Now there are there have been reports for some months
That Jay-Z and his Ventures brand
are going to be coming to buy out LVMH
when it comes to the 50% that they own of Rihanna's Fenty.
And actually yesterday there was a report
that was saying that they are nearing the close of that
and it's actually going to happen and it will be announced
to the next upcoming weeks, which is huge.
JZ and Rihanna 50-50 on Fenty is huge.
Love to see black people doing that.
Y'all talk a lot about capitalism
and how it hurts and affects people.
I think you've done the right way
and we get more of black people
being able to do that, like buy out of LVMH to be a part owner of Fenty Beauty,
where it can be 100% black own and it trickled down and there's more wealth and more
all of that stuff, right? That is how it works well. But anyway, I'm saying all that to say
with Fenty Beauty, Savage by Fenty, which is her lingerie line. I also shop there as well too. I support
my girl Rihanna across the board. And in her music catalog and entertainment catalog,
Rihanna don't even need to put out music.
Like, I just want to know what her music sounds like today.
I'm very curious.
Some of my favorite Rihanna songs are my favorite because it's like she's fun.
She's flirted.
She's sexy.
And she's still all those things, but she's even talked about dressing differently.
Like, Rihanna used to be like, damn, they're naked, okay?
And then as you learn and as you grow and as you, you know, I mean, she's a mama now.
It's just, she's talked about even changing the way.
that she dressed and looking back at certain outfits and, you know, she's just not there anymore.
I wonder what the music will give with that new mind state.
We'll just have to wait and see.
Or we may never see.
I honestly don't know if we're ever going to get a Rihanna album.
I think, and I wouldn't be mad at her about it because a lot of people do music in this way.
I think we're Rihanna.
If we don't get an album, we would get music through various projects.
Like, you know, through more movie endeavors or Fenty Beauty releases.
as like, you know, the soundtrack or jingle of those releases.
I wouldn't be mad about that.
You've heard the chaos.
Now you can see it.

Dear honies, this is goodbye.
In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author Patra Mather's and her husband Michael
mailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide.
By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead.
Next stop, Wonderland.
Patra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love.
Why did they do it?
And what did it do to the people they left behind?
I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known.
I keep coming back to I truly hope that Petra was a thousand percent on board with the plan.
Do you think of him as having killed her?
Yes, I do.
I hold Michael responsible from my mother's staff.

limits. Do you remember your initial reaction when Fox called you to be a part of the World
Cup? I was like, no, I don't want to do it. You said no? I played with players that didn't,
I don't think that they really truly love the game. I found the love with the ball at my foot.
But in my head, it was the long game. It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox.
I'm going to go get some reps and I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it. He said,
This group of people will never be in the same room
