The FAA is turning to video gamers to help fill a major shortage of air traffic controllers.
We've had a conversation over the course of the last month about some of the challenges
that we're having in the airspace.
It's Wednesday, August 12th.
From the Black Effect Podcast Network, I'm Amy Brown.
This is Front Page, and here are the day's biggest stories.
Stay with me.
The FAA is turning to video gamers to help fill a major shortage of air traffic controllers.
The idea started with a recruiting campaign the FAA launched back in April,
specifically targeting gamers.
The ad showed people playing fast-paced video games along real air traffic controllers with the message
you've been training for this.
When the applications opened in April, thousands came within hours.
The agency eventually capped the applications at 8,000.
The salary also may have helped air traffic controllers make around $155,000 a year,
after three years on the job, and you don't need a college degree.
Now, being good at video games, it doesn't automatically qualify someone for direct airplanes.
Applicants still have to pass the same tests, medical and security screenings as everyone else.
They also have to complete training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City before moving on to training at an actual facility.
The recruiting push, though, comes as the FAA continues to deal with a major staffing shortage.
Many of you know that we are 2,000 controllers short, air traffic controller short,
and we have served our academy to bring more controllers into our system.
We are 20% up in controllers through the academy thus far this year.
I've also offered air traffic controllers who are of the age of retirement, a 20% upfront cash bonus to actually stay on.
Some of the best controllers we have don't retire, keep working for us.
All of that has been reducing the pressure on the staffing side of air traffic control.
And training is tough.
Historically, about a third of trainees don't finish the academy.
The FAA says that number has improved to about one and four.
In Oakland, a 31-year-old woman is fighting for her life.
after being hit by a car driven by two little brothers, ages six and four.
Her name is Kiara Bowling.
Bowling was walking a friend's emotional support dog
when surveillance video shows a Toyota Camry
sidest wiping another vehicle before hitting her.
Her sister says she's still fighting for her life.
She is currently suffering from multiple brainbleeds and facial fractures.
And we're just hoping for a true speedy recovery
A source close to the boy's family says the six-year-old found the car keys in his father's pocket while the parents were sleeping.
He then woke up his four-year-old brother, used a kitchen chair to unlock the front door, and the two boys got into the family's car.
Their father reportedly uses that car to make a living as an Uber driver.
The dog Bowling was walking was also injured and ran away after the crash.
He was later found and taken to a veterinarian.
Bowling is in her final semester at Cal State East Bay.
She recently completed an online pre-law program at Harvard Law School and was crowned Miss Greater Bay area last year.
Her family says they don't blame the children.
But then there are questions about whether the parents could face consequences.
A legal analyst told a local television station they could potentially face child neglect charges and civil liability.
Bolings family has started a go-fund me to help with her recovery.
Lastly, a former only fans model, Courtney Clenney, has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Christian Obunselli.
Clennie admitted stabbing Obaselli inside their Miami condo in 2022, but as maintained, she was offending herself.
She was originally charged with second-degree murder, but took a plea deal instead of going to trial.
And because she's already spent roughly four years behind bars, her attorney says she could be out in less than two years.
Prosecutors say Obin Selly was the victim of domestic violence
and pointed to videos showing Clinney hitting him.
Our attorney says those videos are wrong.
We've never sat there and said Courtney was an angel.
They had a very combative relationship.
But at the end of the day, Christian was abusing her.
Obin Selle's family strongly rejects that picture of him.
This is how they described him in court.
who knew Christian, who truly knew him, can attest that he was kind-hearted, compassionate,
friendly, and respectful.
And Clinton's six-year sentence is now drawing comparisons to online cases involving black women
like Marissa Alexander and Centonia Brown, who received much harsher sentences in cases where
abuse was also part of their defense.
The cases are different, but the comparison is fueling a larger conversation about who gets
believe who gets punished and who gets mercy.
That's your front page.
