On today's episode of I Didn't Know, maybe you didn't either,
it is a Massacre Monday.
The city, Atlanta, Georgia.
The year, 1906.
Sadly, there were tons of massacres
that happened in these United States
at the hands of white people.
First, let's define what a massacre is.
And by definition, it is a brutal slaughter of people deliberately and violently killing a large number of people.
Right now, today in 2024, if you ask people in Atlanta, one of their biggest gripes is,
man, too many people trying to move down here, shawty.
Keep your head at where you at, folk.
But the reality is, folks been trying to move to Atlanta since the late 1800s.
In 1880, it was 9,000 black folk in Atlanta.
By 1900, it was 35,000 black folk in Atlanta.
You dig what I'm saying?
And these black folk were getting money in Atlanta, just like right now.
I'm talking about elitists in Atlanta getting money in Atlanta, just like right now. I'm talking
about elitists in Atlanta. And white folk didn't like that. Oh no, white folk didn't like that at
all. See, that contributed to the racial tensions in the city. See, during that reconstruction from
1867 to 1876, black men got the right to vote and they became more involved in politics. They
started establishing businesses, creating social networks, building communities.
They started to get wealth and prestige and the white folks wasn't liking that. And it was saloons in Atlanta, down there on Decatur Street, clubs basically. And the white folk didn't like that.
A lot of times the white folks was blaming the folks who was out there in the clubs on the rising
crime rate that were going on in the city. Most importantly, threats of sexual violence against
white women. But the cherry on top was them black folk trying to be elitist and be equal to the whites.
White folk wasn't having that.
So Saturday, September 22nd, 1906 was three days of madness.
The newspaper reported that four white girls were assaulted.
Never substantiated, but it brought that white mob out. And by midnight, it was down to Decatur Street, Pride Street, Central Avenue, all throughout the Central Business District.
Just assaulting blacks, persons and businesses.
Vandalism, chaos, running in barbershops, killing barbers and burning the barbershop down.
It was madness, man.
Jumped in trolleys, beating up black men and women, flipping over cars.
I mean, the militia was
called and that still wasn't enough to stop that white mob. It started raining at two in the
morning. That wasn't enough to stop that white mob. That was God himself trying to throw down
water like y'all stop killing black folk in Atlanta. That didn't stop them. White mobs still
out there mobbing. By Sunday, black folks had ran off into hiding and Atlanta was under the control of
the militia. You know what it looked like, a bunch of cops and military folks out there with their
big guns and their protective gear on, protecting that white property. There was a gentleman there,
his name was Walter White. And this whole experience was a defining moment for Walter
White because he went on to be the secretary of the NAACP. By Monday, a group of black folks met up in Brownsville,
down there where Clark Atlanta is.
Big weapons.
I'm talking about ready to go get their face back.
Fulton County police hear about it.
It's a raid on Brownsville.
A shootout ensued.
A cop gets killed.
Now the militia has sent to Brownsville.
They arrested 250 black men.
Different accounts say between 25 and 40 black people were killed in Atlanta, Georgia that weekend.
Although the coroner only issued 10 death certificates for black folks.
And most accounts say only two white people were killed.
And one of those white people was a woman who suffered a heart attack when she saw the mob outside of her house.
The Atlanta Massacre of 1906
was something that I didn't know.
Maybe you didn't either.
I didn't know.
