Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Getting ready for a game means being ready for anything. Like packing a spare stick. I like to be prepared. That's why I remember, 988, Canada's suicide crisis helpline. It's good to know just in case. Anyone can call or text for free confidential support from a train responder anytime.
Starting point is 00:00:26 988 suicide crisis helpline is funded by the government in Canada. In the middle of the night, Saskia awoke in a haze. Her husband Mike was on his laptop. What was on his screen would change Saskia's life forever. I said, I need you to tell me exactly what you're doing. And immediately, the mask came off. You're supposed to be safe. That's your home.
Starting point is 00:00:53 That's your husband. Listen to Betrayal Season 5 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know, Roald Dahl. He thought up Willie Wonka and the BFJ. She. But does you know he was a spy? In the new podcast, The Secret World of Roll Doll, I'll tell you that story, and much, much more. What? You probably won't believe it either.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Was this before he wrote his stories? It must have been. Okay, I don't think that's true. I'm telling you, the guy was a spy. Listen to the Secret World of Roll Doll on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Clayton Eckerd in 2022. the lead of ABC's The Bachelor. But here's the thing. Bachelor fans hated him.
Starting point is 00:01:40 If I could press a button and rewind it all I would. That's when his life took a disturbing turn. A one-night stand would end in a courtroom. The media is here. This case has gone viral. The dating contract. Agree to date me, but I'm also suing you. This is unlike anything I've ever seen before.
Starting point is 00:02:00 I'm Stephanie Young. Listen to Love Trapped on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you your podcasts. Next Monday, our 2026 IHeart podcast awards are happening live at South by Southwest. It's the biggest night in podcasting. We'll honor the very best in podcasting from the past year and celebrate the most innovative talent and creators in the industry. And the winner is creativity, knowledge, and passion will all be on full display.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Thank you so much. IHeart Radio. Thank you to all the other nominees. You guys are awesome. Watch live next Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific free at veeps.com or the Veepes app. You're all finished or y'all's done. Morning, everybody.
Starting point is 00:02:46 It's D.J.N.V. Jess, J.S. Hilarie. We are the breakfast club. Laurel Roses here as well. We got a special guest in the building. Yes, indeed. Jess, this is our fake workout partner. Ladies and gentlemen, Angela Simmons is here. That's the fake workout partner.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Angela's the only person I know comes in the gym with heels on. Hills. Talk about, can I work, can I ride the bike with heels on? That day. It was just that day. That was just that day. But I go to the real gym, so that's, like, a part of it. That's like the healing process. She said the real Joe. The real job. No, no, no, I'm saying like, you get it.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Like, it's like, you're not really sweating in there. Yeah, you're not. Why'd you come in the gym with heels? What are you training for? I was going going somewhere else after. Oh, I just, you can go there in your heels. Right. Oh, you were going to change clothing.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Okay, he made it sound like you bought the... No, she worked out in her heels, damn it. I did that day. See? See? See? They were, like, short heels and they were gray and they had like fur. It was okay.
Starting point is 00:03:31 And it was furry-ass heels. But I had on sweats with it, so it's fair. You never know when you got to fight. You might have to fight you work. That's true. Well, welcome. Thank you. How are you feeling?
Starting point is 00:03:41 I'm great. So you became an artist now. Singing. Yes, period. Well, no, not singing. Not quite that. Rapping? Spoken word.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Spoken word. So that's you speaking. So that's not you singing. That's not me saying. Boy, I'm stupid. Oh, Lord. That is someone that agrees up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Okay. So she's singing on it. Okay. Because it sounded like Soraya at first. And one of the producers was like, it's giving empire, Saraya. But then I was like,
Starting point is 00:04:06 No, no, no, no, no, no. That has to be you. And then I literally said, well, what if she's not singing, and she's just doing the spoken word part? And you're literally just doing the spoken word part. Okay. How did you come about doing that and hopping on the song with it? So I went into the studio and Q, who's in the room.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Q? Kew. Yeah, he kind of convinced me. And then, like, I started just working on a bunch of different songs and I winded up doing this song with Cortay, Hit Maker, and signed with Rough Riders for this single. So putting it out. And, yeah, I just created.
Starting point is 00:04:36 sat in the studio and did it, literally. I mean, you come from, of course, you know, you were ever under daughter, JoJo's sister, they never inspired you to get in the studio? I never wanted to do. I didn't, I wasn't thinking about it, but I do love music, because music is like everything. I used it to do everything. And so I just felt the creative bug and I went in the studio. I started this like two years ago, the process, so I have a couple of different ones,
Starting point is 00:04:58 but this one I felt like I really felt led to put out. Never, like even, Russell Simmons is your uncle, and you never felt like going in the studio ever? Not singing and rapping nothing? I shied away from it. I just wasn't like, I just like, nah, let me not. Let me let them head it. That's what I was thinking. So you're doing a whole project or just you're going to see?
Starting point is 00:05:14 I'm going to do a whole project for sure. And is it going to be strictly spoken word or are you going to have other artists coming and sing? Other artists, it's really about like I started off doing it because of like meditation and healing and stuff. So like meditation stuff and just things that inspire and uplift. And then like I got further and further in and I'm like, jada is on this with me? Like I'm really doing it.
Starting point is 00:05:33 You know what I mean? Like so it's going to be a. mix, definitely. The project's a mix of different artists and myself. You said you felt led to put this one out, and I know the song is talking about being in the maze and figuring things out. We watched you go through various things over the years. Why now did you think that the spirit led you here? Like, is there a sense of healing that you had in? I was like timing and alignment. It was right timing for me. Like I said, I've been working on it for a while, and it just all the pieces started coming together,
Starting point is 00:05:58 like Rough Riders coming to being a part of it, me finally ready to just put the music out there and it was timing for me. It is interesting, uncle, you know, with somebody with your last name, get into the music industry, people automatically think legacy. Did growing up around music make this feel inevitable, or did it make you hesitate because of expectation? I feel like at first, I definitely, because of expectations, wouldn't have touched music at all.
Starting point is 00:06:19 But I'm so creative that I can't help myself. You know what I mean? Like, I was like, I'm going to do it, and this is what I'm going to give. And I think it's dope. I love it. So what do y'all think of it? I thought it was dope. I got to listen to it again now.
Starting point is 00:06:31 To me, it sounds like a theme song to like a, drama series like something 50 would put on on power one of those I like I do I really see that for it thank you thank you yeah in my mind I was like this ain't Angela's gonna I'm like I'm like she saying she sounds this good and she ain't never saying ever she's riffing and she ain't been in the studio not singing now it's not you so I was I got to listen to again I got it's a different let down no no no I just got to hear it again that's what I got to listen thinking it was you singing yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I listened to all of it
Starting point is 00:07:03 everything from the artist, your part, and Jada. I thought it flowed great. Thank you. Yeah. What's your pop saying? He likes it. Yeah. He's happy for me.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Did he know you were doing it or was one of those things like, Dad, play this while we're in the car? It was one of those things where I just called him the next day. I was like, I was in the studio. He's like, working on what? You know what I mean? But I sent to him and he's super supportive. He loves it.
Starting point is 00:07:23 He loves Jada on it. He likes the video. You guys probably haven't seen the video yet. No. Yeah, we did a video, so we did the whole thing. Yeah. Some people will say Angela Simmons is already successful, so Why music?
Starting point is 00:07:33 Is it about passion, expression, proving something to yourself? Passion, expression, creativity, just doing what I want to do and not letting people put me in a box. You know what I mean? Like, I do what I want because I want to do it, not because I'm supposed to do things a certain way.
Starting point is 00:07:47 So for me, it's like, I'm just doing me. So what do you enjoy doing? Because we've seen the Angeles cakes, we've seen the shoes. That's still live and active. We've seen the music. So what do you enjoy to do the most? Or it's just entrepreneurship?
Starting point is 00:07:58 All of it. Like, I think that's the thing about being an entrepreneur is like a lot of times people tell you you can only do one thing and I'm like, oh, that's hard for me because like I do multiple things just naturally. Wake up, work out. I'm in wellness. What can I do about it? That's my real life. You know what I'm saying? So I think it's just being creative and being able to be a creator. Like, I'm a creator. That's just what I do. What things that, what lessons that you've learned all these years in business are you bringing into like Angelus and as the artist?
Starting point is 00:08:23 Well, it's Angela Renee. That's my name as an artist, right? But as an artist, it's just like letting myself flow and be whatever that is. Like, I don't think there's no cap on how. I can do this thing and I do feel like it's a different lane that I haven't seen out there. Like I'm mixing myself with other artists and then I'm coming in and doing like a spoken word part which I have not seen done. Like I've never heard anything like what I'm putting out, you know, as far as how unique it is. So yeah, just allowing myself to flow in that and be who I am. How long are you doing spoken word?
Starting point is 00:08:52 Man, like I started the music stuff like two years ago. So like I've been in the studio and I have just started working on multiple different sounds because for me I like so many different things in music. You know what I mean? It's not like, I don't like just one genre. So I was like, I want to hear different stuff. And I was inspired by so many people like Jene Iiko. And I was listening to these different artists every day, like for inspiration and healing.
Starting point is 00:09:13 And I was like, it did something for me. Like that was like the first thing I was listening to in the morning. I'm like, I should do my own thing. And then I just got like further and further in it. And who used to be so big in the culture, like because of things like death poetry, you know what I mean? But also because of movies like Love Jones. I wonder why we got away from that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Yeah, that's true. Have you ever done it live? No, but I will. I'm ready. Yeah, for sure. I was going to ask you, when you came over with the concept, who was the first person you told? What were their thoughts?
Starting point is 00:09:40 We'd be like, let's do a spoken word on a record with a singer and a rap. I didn't even know what I was doing. I just went in the studio. Corte, Q and I started in New York. And then like, for like a week, I was just going in this. New York? Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:09:55 That's upstate. That's like, that's upstate? That doesn't sound like Boston or something. That's not a little Boston and Memphis together. It's all of a sudden New York. I don't know. I was like, where did that come from? I'm sorry, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:10:06 In New York, yeah. New York. Yeah, I don't have no Memphis no more. Yeah, I mean, you know. Oh, hell of. Well, anyway, so I was in New York, and so we went in the studio, and there was just, like, different beats, and I got to sit there and, like, just play with them.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Like, I went in the booth, and I didn't write anything down. I was thinking I was going to write, and it just flowed straight up out my head, whatever I was thinking. And I did that for multiple days, and then I just kept going with it, so. And when did that did that, you just kept going with it, so. When did Jada kiss get on there? He got on it maybe like at least 12 months ago, set with HitMaker, and then HitMaker hit Jada, and Jada jumped on in, like, less than a week.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Did he just hear what you had already done? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, and then he did something. Okay. I think you should do a spooker word tool because, like Shara said, we got away from it, and I feel like a live event like that, that's so intimate. That's so, like, that's a connection with people.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Like, you know, that's why I said you ever done it live. I want to. I've been to spoken word. Oh, I want to. I already have some big plans for how I'll even want to roll this out going forward. I just love live music. I love music. I love the culture.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Even like the young lady Reza who's on it, like having her part of it. Her voice is incredible. I was like, let's leave you on this. You know what I mean? Like I think it's dope. You're ready dope on it. She's a writer. So like I just, I love using my platform for stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Yeah. How do you prepare yourself for the criticism that might come with, you know? No, you know, I don't, I just don't care about criticism. I am so used to public opinion and I've been around it so long that I don't care It's like they're gonna have their opinion about me regardless Good, bad, ugly, you know what I mean? I feel like I am who I am
Starting point is 00:11:41 So it's like I don't really care I'm ready for whatever How'd the Rough Riders think I'm about? That's like family and it's like it just naturally flowed Like wise like family and Rough Riders You know my family history with them And the legacy behind that so it's kind of like Naturally just flowed like I already started working on my
Starting point is 00:12:00 project independently and I went to them and talked to them and we just kind of came together and that's what we do that's how we got to the single deal what do you want people to learn about you that they don't already know from the music what story can you tell with the spoken word that you haven't told already I just think more of more depth of who I am you know what I mean seeing me on a different creative level outside of just like what has been seen I feel like they'll see just more of me like the people that I do know the interactions I do have with these people who sit down have these different connections and mixing sounds and just doing something that's different, but, you know, that's what I'm hoping they'll get from it.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Are you, well, it seems like you're, like, in a really good place, like, just energy-wise. I feel like this song, went you out on that tour. Are you ready to have the conversations with the women that come that connect to being in that maze and trying to figure out so many different things because you've kind of healed from a lot of the things that you've been through? Absolutely. I feel like that's one of my major things is doing stuff like this so that I can help people heal. You know what I mean? I think everyone's always
Starting point is 00:12:59 at a different space in their life when it comes to healing. We're always healing. Everyone's always healing from something. Not linear. Yes, like, you've got to heal. So, like, I would love to have those conversations and I want people to heal and I want people to look themselves and, you know, like in the song I'm saying, look yourself in a mirror because how long can you run from yourself? You know what I mean? I feel like people run from themselves all the time, every day. And we find things to cover up for it, whether that be a substance, whether that be love, whether that be, people find stuff all the
Starting point is 00:13:24 time to run from the truth of themselves. So I'm definitely ready to have those conversations. So the success, the heartbreak, the motherhood, that's all going to be reflected in this whole thing. Everything. I mean, wherever I'm at in my life, I think that's the good part about the booth. It's like an open diary. Whatever may come from there, that's what it's going to be. And then the collaboration with other artists and coming together, like, that's a whole different world. Is it therapeutic for you? It is. Okay. I would go in there, have my candles lit and maybe a glass of wine. You know what I mean? Like, I was like, I had my request. We got to have lights a certain, I like dark and then the light, it's just, it's a whole thing.
Starting point is 00:13:58 And I prefer to record in the evenings. Yeah. It's just like a better thing. Watching you on Angie Martinez a few, it was like seven, eight months ago. And then hearing this song, I was like, I wonder if she's ever thought, like, their spoken word, but you know how people do, not a podcast, but kind of like live conversations too. Like, when I watch on Angie Martinez, I feel like I learned so much more about Angela
Starting point is 00:14:16 Simmons, the adult versus the Angela Simmons I used to watch online and just watch on television. And I think a lot of people, there's a digital. disconnect sometimes there where they don't. Huge, huge disconnect. Because they, again, they seen me at 17 growing up on TV, so they're kind of stuck at 17. So even when I do grown things, it's like foreign to everybody. Oh, you've grown up.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Duh. Like, you missed about 20 years of my life. But you know what I'm saying? It's like, I think there's definitely a disconnect and knowing who I truly am. And I don't feel led to have to push it. It's like if as long as I'm out there and y'all begin to see more of it, then you'll learn who Angela Renee is and Angela Simmons is. So you still feel like people are judging you based on who you were at 19 instead of who you are now?
Starting point is 00:14:58 They do. Absolutely. They do. You still see a swimsuit at all. Yeah, I remember. Oh my God, put on some clothes. Like, I'd be like, this is ridiculous. If anyone else puts on a swim tour or if anyone else, like, even today I have this on the thongs out, that's risky for that, like, risk-a-like, like, for people to see me like that.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And I'm like, do you know how old I am? I have a whole child. Like, you're kidding me? I'm not looking, but they're the thong out. That's what I'm like. You're not like, well, you know, you're not a girl's a girl. with the jeans and you showed a little like throwing on the side. No, no, no, no, no, I don't need to see.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Go. You're giving an artist. But the reason you act like that even more. The reason you act like that is because he's seen around 17 and that's Rev's door. It's fire. But regardless, it's even worse. People have things to say about it.
Starting point is 00:15:42 That's right. You look good. Always look at it's me. Look at me. Look at my. Yeah, I mean, if I thought about my accident, that's different. But it looked now.
Starting point is 00:15:50 It's kind of crazy. It's like an outfit thing that people do. But you got to train me. You got to do your thing. But you have to carry a certain level of confidence. Don't get no ideas, please. Shut up. You look ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I just want you to know that. I don't know what you. I don't want you to be inspired. Okay, focus. Red work. Do you have to have a certain level of confidence to do and push through? Like, just even the way people critique what you wear, the fact that you're grown now or whatever.
Starting point is 00:16:16 And meeting you, not meeting because I've met you before, but seeing you here today, after watching all that online, it's like you are completely unfazed. like pop up, let me show you, let me... But is it always unfaced? Because your responses are so loud sometimes. I just don't care simply. Like, I really don't care what anyone has to say.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Like, I, to me, like, if I'm straight in my world and everything's good, then why am I concerned about with anybody, the public or an audience has to say? As long as my son's straight, my family good, my friend's good, and I'm happy, hey, y'all could talk all day. Was it tough for you when you decided to talk about the split with? Goddy, because that got a lot of conversation too. I just had to, you know, I mean, I guess because we were public, you know, together, I understand so people had conversations about it, but no, not really.
Starting point is 00:17:04 You know what I mean? I don't think there's nothing bad there. Love them to death. Like, so there's no problems. It's just, you know, publicly when things happen and you are public figuring things happen, people are curious what happened. Oh, no, not tough at all. The funny thing is when you walked in here, the first thing I said was like,
Starting point is 00:17:20 you know, whatever happened to her sister? Where's her sister? that. Everyone always asks about my sister. She is in California. She's not tuck, but she's, she's doing a lot. She just actually, my brother, Jojo. Canadian women are looking for more. More to themselves, their businesses, their elected leaders, and the world are at them. And that's why we're thrilled to introduce the Honest Talk podcast. I'm Jennifer Stewart. And I'm Catherine Clark. And in this podcast, we interview Canada's most inspiring women. Entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, politicians, and newsmakers, all at different stages of their
Starting point is 00:17:52 So if you're looking to connect, then we hope you'll join us. Listen to the Honest Talk podcast on IHartRadio or wherever you listen to your podcasts. In the middle of the night, Saskia awoke in a haze. Her husband, Mike, was on his laptop. What was on his screen would change Saskia's life forever. I said, I need you to tell me exactly what you're doing. And immediately, the mask came on. You're supposed to be safe.
Starting point is 00:18:28 That's your home. That's your husband. To keep this secret for so many years, he's like a seasoned pro. This is a story about the end of a marriage, but it's also the story of one woman who was done living in the dark. You're a dangerous person who prays on vulnerable and trusting people. You're a predator, Michael Levin Good. Listen to Betrayal Season 5 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know Roll Doll, the writer who thought up Willie Wonka, Matilda, and the BFG.
Starting point is 00:19:07 But did you know he was also a spy? Was this before he wrote his stories? It must have been. Our new podcast series, The Secret World of Roll Doll, is a wild journey through the hidden chapters of his extraordinary, controversial life. His job was literally to seduce the wives of powerful men. Americans. And he was really good at it. You probably won't believe it either. Okay, I don't think that's true.
Starting point is 00:19:28 I'm telling you. I was a spy. Did you know Dahl got cozy with the Roosevelt's? Played poker with Harry Truman and had a long affair with a congresswoman. And then he took his talents to Hollywood, where he worked alongside Walt Disney and Alfred Hitchcock before writing a hit James Bond film. How did this secret agent wind up as the most successful children's author ever? And what darkness from his covert past seeped into the stories we read as kids?
Starting point is 00:19:52 The true story is stranger than anything he ever wrote. Listen to the secret world of Roll Dahl on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Next Monday, our 2026 IHeart Podcast Awards are happening live at South by Southwest. This is the biggest night in podcasting. We'll honor the very best in podcasting from the past year and celebrate the most innovative talent and creators in the industry. And the winner is creativity, knowledge, and passion will all be on full display. Thank you so much. Heart Radio. Thank you to all the other nominees. You guys are awesome.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Watch live next Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific free at Veeps.com or the Veeps app. I'm Clayton Eckerd, and in 2022, I was the lead of ABC's The Bachelor. Unfortunately, it didn't go according to plan. He became the first Bachelor to ever have his final rose rejected. The internet turned on him. If I could press a button and rewind it all I would. But what happened to Clayton after the show? made even bigger headlines. It began as a one-night stand and ended in a courtroom
Starting point is 00:20:58 with Clayton at the center of a very strange paternity scandal. The media is here. This case has gone viral. The dating contract. Agree to date me, but I'm also suing you. Please search for it.
Starting point is 00:21:11 This is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trapped. This season, an epic battle of He Said She Said, and the search for accountability in a sea of lies. Listen to Love Trapped on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:21:33 or wherever you get your podcasts. Has his podcast, and she just joined him, so now they're co-hosts together, but she's into movies that are coming out. She stays in her own world, too. I think that's just the thing. Like, sometimes you just don't see her as much because she's not, like, socially out everywhere.
Starting point is 00:21:52 It's interesting because, like, a lot of influences launch brands now, but y'all were doing it way before it was, like, a trendy thing. You think people underestimated you and your sister's business mindset early on? I think it had never been done. Again, like it was a new lane. Like girls, female, young girls putting out sneakers wasn't a thing. When you walked inside of Foot Locker and all these things, you weren't seeing the sneakers that we were putting out.
Starting point is 00:22:15 And we were literally 17, 18, like young doing it. But they may have underestimated it until it, like, did what it did. What happened to the pastry line? It just, it ended. You sold it or? No, we were working with it. another company so it's license and they it's still so they have its own thing but it's not we're not affiliated with it got you y'all built that up too though i mean yeah rappers rapping about it like yeah
Starting point is 00:22:39 that's true yeah we did build that up that was a fun run did you purposely leave well obviously you purposely left simmons off of um angela rene is that because what the pressure is that comes behind what people expect of you because you are simmons or no i just feel like angela rene is a different part of me you know know what I mean? Like more deep, more different conversations than just what you see is Angela Simmons. Like I'll be sharing more. It's a different part of me. And I feel like the two are separate. It's like Angela Simmons, the mom, Angel Simmons, entrepreneur. And then there's like the creative artist, Angela Renee. You know what I'm saying? So just a different part of me. Yeah. Had your son heard you on the music? He did. He likes it. I actually told him I was going to radio. He said, do people listen to the radio anymore?
Starting point is 00:23:21 Damn. Yes, 86% in the country. I know, but I'm just laughing. Over 200 million people. See? I said, they ask about you. He said, what did they be asking about me? I said, actually, he called me this morning. He's like, um, because he says it's all about his business. He got like an art business. I didn't bought him a website. I said, I'm waiting for you to put enough art on it so we can put it up.
Starting point is 00:23:39 He's like, I'm ready. I want my credit card. I'm like, boy. Bank card. Bank card. How old is baby boy now? Nine. Nine. He didn't nobody listen to radio. No, he asked me that. Kalila, did he not? He said that was, he so fast with his mouth. I was like, I'm getting, because he was like on the phone, getting ready for school.
Starting point is 00:23:54 and I'm like, he's like, I was like, I have radio this morning. People still listen to radio. I said, 86% of the country. But the way he said it to me, I was like, little boy. Yeah, I bet. Is that the only person that can really, really hurt your feelings and humble you? He will. He can.
Starting point is 00:24:10 How did motherhood shift the way you see success? Longevity. Like, what's the longevity in success? But also, being a mother, it's like you really don't want to miss so many moments. I think I've been really, like, honing in on that. Like how can I sit 30 days straight, you know what I mean, do my job from here and be here for him because of the rapid way he's growing. You know what I mean? So it's like, how do you have longevity but be present for your child, making the right decision?
Starting point is 00:24:36 And for me, it's a solo, dolo mission other than obviously my family, which are wonderful with him. But it's like I got to always shift and figure out what city, state, what makes the most sense, like what schools, just longevity and figuring out what does the legacy look like for him later. You know what I mean? Coming from my dad to me to, you know, my family in general, down to him, what's next for him? And being that, like, example for him. How do you protect him? Because you talk about you don't necessarily care about social media, but he's nine years old now. He's in school.
Starting point is 00:25:06 I'm sure he sees the thing. So how do you protect him if you can't? He don't have, I don't give him all access to all social media, even though he's very smart and go look up everything. I protect him to my best ability. I think he, obviously he's nine, so he knows how to look up stuff. But he's not on TikTok? No TikTok. No Instagram.
Starting point is 00:25:23 He wants one. He wants a snap. He wants it all. I'm like, your mom on Instagram with a thong on. Yeah. He looks at me. He always got something to say,
Starting point is 00:25:32 oh, you cut your hair. I'm like, what is that bad or good? Do you like it? He's always looking at me. Where are you going? What time you're getting back? He's on me. That's one thing about my son.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Yeah, he's on my heel. Does he understand like who mom is and like all that stuff? Like, does he? The whole family. Yeah, your family, yeah. He's learning and has learned over the years, but not fully. Like, it's an interesting position
Starting point is 00:25:55 because he's always around so much and he sees so much. I think slightly, but not really. Like, I don't know. I don't think yet. But he even recognized his grandfather in a video? Oh, no, no. Now he knows everything about Papa.
Starting point is 00:26:07 Papa, like, he knows Papa's big. He'd be like, oh, yeah, that's, you know, I show him everything. Christmas time, be like, look at these videos. You know this song, who's this? You know what I mean? Like, he knows that. His favorite artist is Kendra Glamardo.
Starting point is 00:26:17 I mean, that's his playlist. S.J., he's funny. Yeah. How do you? do you find the script to keep evolving when like your personal pain has been so public um it's the healing it's the getting therapy it's the keeping it real with yourself which to me even in the music that's the thing is like how do you keep it real with yourself are you good are you not good what are you doing for your mental health today and that to me is like
Starting point is 00:26:40 why i'm so deep into like wellness and fitness and stuff it's like that keeps me sane that's my me time that's my getaway time so just always checking back in with myself and making sure that I'm doing the things I need to do to make sure I'm well. And if I'm not, I'll step away from everything. I don't ever care about shutting down. You know what I mean? I'll shut everything down if I don't feel like I'm in a good space. Do you mind keeping your relationships public?
Starting point is 00:27:01 Does that bother you because people are always in your business? It just depends. If it makes sense for me and my partner, and that's what we want to do, we can do it. But I don't mind being private and I don't mind being public. It's just about like if we solid, then we good. We don't have nothing else to worry about. That's the thing. But I do see a lot of times when people go public, their relationship goes bad.
Starting point is 00:27:19 but I mean, I dated publicly for almost three years. So, like, I don't ever think it's about the public more than it's about the home. Like, what's happening at home is way more important than what's happening in public. But dating while famous seems awesome. I was going to really have a choice either. Like, you, when your last relationship,
Starting point is 00:27:34 I don't know where you were. Oh, we had a choice. I think we put it out there. But, I mean, he got he rapped about you. It was called manifestation. Yeah, like, but people were going to follow your every track, every single movie made. If y'all were even sitting in the same.
Starting point is 00:27:49 room it was a story like you know what i mean like before you guys came out so that's what i mean but i don't know if you really had the choice i think we still had a choice i think any relationship you want you could make it private if we really want to it's just a certain way to move what was the choice to make it public then like why i mean because we was with each other if i'm with you every day like i'm with you're going to see me next to him you know what i'm saying like it's like it's public and i've been rapping about this girl and i got it look so i know it was like real big and she sounded like I was really confused. Shut.
Starting point is 00:28:17 All right. Please, because now everyone is like, oh, you don't have the accent anymore. I'm like, bro, I think if you're around someone every day, you naturally just stand like them. You start looking like them, standing like them. Like, it just becomes a thing. But I couldn't help it.
Starting point is 00:28:34 If I'm talking to someone every day with that accent, it's a heavy accent. It's just, I wasn't trying. Like, I was literally slowing up my mouth. Like, what I'm going to me through. How do you protect your peace while still being open to love? by straying away if it seems like it's not about to be peaceful. Like, to me, like, I think if you start talking to someone
Starting point is 00:28:52 and it seems like it's going to be a little chaos or they got too much going on and they're not, like, really, like, working on themselves, I got to hit the brakes. Like, you got that. If you're not ready, leave me alone because I'm peaceful and I like what I got. You know what I mean? So I just stay away from it.
Starting point is 00:29:07 I hate that from a lot of my homegirls. They'd be like, I can't even date a man if he's not doing the work on himself. Because who has time? On some type of healing journey. Like how you go? healing and fixing yourself and then you come into a man's life and he's like no i'm not interested bro like if you're not going to heal yourself like i don't want to be a part of that you know like i only
Starting point is 00:29:24 want to evolve so how can i be evolving and you just you staying right there that don't make sense when you were talking to angie martina as you said that you and goddy's breakup wasn't your choice but it was necessary was that one of the reasons why like was he not where you were healing why no i think that that has nothing to do with it i think you know it was it was i have i really care about him and his family, so I really don't talk too much about all that. But, no, I just, it was just, it just made sense at the time for what it was.
Starting point is 00:29:52 So what about now? Like, would you do a very big public relationship now, or would you, like, how are you walking that line of baby? I was going to get back together. I was going to say, that's what you're going to? Why do you say that? But I'm like Lauren and ask what I'm saying? Wait, and now you can see in the future? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:08 I mean, because the, like, the action is still there a little bit. It's like a go away, but then you bring it back. So is that a, I am open to my destiny. I don't speak on what I will or won't do because then you be an idiot you come back and see this and be like, oh yeah, you said never. Like I never say never.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I'm a never say never person though. I learned that once I got pregnant, I'm a never saying never again. You just never say never. That's all. You're not opposed to it. And you and his mom's still super cool. I love his whole family.
Starting point is 00:30:33 They're amazing family. They're really good people. I peeped out just being nosy on social media. Oh, Angela and the mom still is cool. You can tell about how you talk about the situation though that there's still a lot of love there. I have high respects. She's not.
Starting point is 00:30:45 bitter or anything. But I don't, I'm not even that personal, like if I stopped dealing with a person, I guarantee they don't have a problem with me. Because I'm not, I don't leave bitter. I don't care. I'm going to go work on myself, peace. And I leave in peace, literally. Like, I'm not that girl, and I've never been and never will be. So you're not opposed
Starting point is 00:31:01 to spending the block. God's destiny. I'm always open to what's destined for me. Okay. You know? Yeah. That's the political answer. Any other questions? No, I was just saying, because I usually like... She hit you like the lawyer, so. Back to my original question. If you have to The thing is I just want what's for me.
Starting point is 00:31:17 Absolutely. And you never know. You never know what, I can't. Kalila, can you speak for me? That's a good friend, see. The friends are always the new love. I want the new love. But just new love and new life.
Starting point is 00:31:34 So are you opposed to new love? No, I'm ready. That's because she's dating somebody. Come on, Jess, all right. I'm dating somebody. I'm dating. I'm dating. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Means that I'm open to dates and I have taken dates. Yes, no people, people getting to know you. Yeah, yeah. All right. I like love. So am I open to love and being in a relationship right now?
Starting point is 00:31:55 Yeah. As long as they're not like holding me back or anything. Like let me be meeting. Yeah. That's what you did another rapper. All right. What you did in a rapper? Again, you can't say no.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Okay. I'm not necessarily looking necessarily for a rapper. I wasn't looking for a rapper when I wanted it up with a rapper. Got you, got you. But we just winds up together. But I'm not opposed. I'm like very open. I would consider myself an open type of person, I think.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Yeah. Does it peak your interest when they mention you in songs? It's interesting. It's flattering. It's cute. If I like the song, I'm a rapid, for sure. You Google who it is. Let me see what he looked like.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Yeah, I want to know that. It's important detail. What about if they put your name in a wax song? You listen to the song like, this song's trash. I don't know why they mention my name. I don't know if I've been through that quite yet. Do you think real growth comes from pain? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:32:49 You experiencing pain changes you as a person. You're never the same person. That's what I will say. Like after pain, a certain level of pain, you're just a new person. Like you're transforming, you're becoming a new person after that. You look at life differently. It depends on the pain, whether that be grief, whether that be a heartbreak. It changes you.
Starting point is 00:33:08 It definitely makes you grow, though, and look at life in a different way. What part of your healing journey do you think people don't see and do you even care of the shoulder? I don't think they see enough of like the motherhood part for me because I think that's the part of life I didn't sign up for like you don't sign up to be a parent alone. And so like that's constant every day all day being a parent. But like when you're doing it in a different way without like a male, that's like you always want to make sure you're doing the right things for especially a young man. You're like, okay, am I doing this right for you? Is this correct? So I would say when it comes to pain like those are the things people don't see.
Starting point is 00:33:47 they don't see a lot of the things. Because I've been through a lot. And heartbreak, okay, it's heartbreak. But, like, dealing with your child who's, like, constantly in daddy mode and you don't have dad for him, that's grief. Like, that's, like, ongoing grief that you have to just deal with. So to me, that's, like, a different level of, like, strength in every day getting up, like, okay, we're good. We're going to do this. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:34:10 But is it, like, now because he's nine and y'all are having, like, such bigger conversations because he has so much more questions. Yes. How is it dealing with your own grief, but also making it? sure he's kind of protected or healed from his. It's, I mean, it's difficult. I'm dealing with his, and I deal with that to my best ability, and then I deal with mine. And, you know, like, the other day, for instance, he wrote me. He's like, I guess his grandfather told him that his dad had a Ford, like, one of these big trucks.
Starting point is 00:34:33 So he asked me for the pictures, and I'm like, where did that come from? But he was like, oh, yeah, that's a dope truck. He just naturally had one of those large trucks with the wheels and all that stuff. But, like, just even hearing him asking these things is like, oh, like, you would have loved your dad. Like, y'all were so, like, similar. But, you know, it's just, that's a day-by-day thing. Does your faith help you through the grief? Oh, prayer is everything for me.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Like, I don't move without prayer. Me and my son, I'm like, check the Bible app. Did you pray? We pray at night. That's the one thing. He's still like, get in bed with me and pray with me before bed. You know what I mean? But my faith is what keeps me grounded and keeps me like here.
Starting point is 00:35:06 Like, if I didn't have faith, you would be like, it's God real? Like, how am I going through all this? And I'm still okay. But I'm definitely, my faith has grounded me and keeps me rooted and, like, together. Has his father visited him from the other side? Hmm? Has his father visited him from the other side? Dreams probably, yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:25 I mean, I feel like maybe Esha and his dreams, he's definitely, like you said, at the age where it's, like, way more interest in my dad like this or like, you know, and his grandmother, his nana, she's always giving him different stuff, little old cell phones he had or like clothes, little pieces of him. So that helps too. Well, let's get into the record.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Let's play the record. I'm going to let you introduce the record. You can introduce it to the world. Okay. Well, y'all are about to hear Run 2 featuring Jada Kiss and Reza. Do you have a name for the album? No, no project. Just a single right now.
Starting point is 00:35:57 It's just a single right now. Yeah. And you'll wait to see how people think about it before you're snapping your fingers more in the studio. I'm snapping them regardless here. But I want them to hear this. Okay. All right. Well, it's Angela Simmons, ladies and gentlemen.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Angela Renee. Angela Renee, ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry. Don't point at me. Because she just said a while several times. We don't know if Angela Renee going to sell the, like Angela, Simmons is going to sound confusing, though. Angela Simmons is the business woman and the daughter that we're all going up. Can we say Angela Renee formally, Angela?
Starting point is 00:36:25 No, because she's too much. Angela Renee. Thank you. It's Angela Renee Simmons. I was a bit of a joke. I was a joke. It's Angela Renee. It's the breakfast club.
