I know this is true because I used to be like that until I realized that negotiation isn't a talent. It's a skill that anyone can learn. And once I did, everything changed. I went from people pleaser to confident communicator. And now I teach
Starting point is 00:02:02 Fortune 500 leaders and top executives how to do the same. Listen to Negotiate Anything on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Wake that ass up. In the morning. The Breakfast Club. EJNV, Jess Hilarious, Charlamagne the guy. We are the Breakfast Club.
Starting point is 00:02:16 We got a special, we have a special guest in the building. This one is just running a little late. The first special guest we have is Anthony Anderson. Welcome, brother. What's going on, baby? How you feel? I'm good. I'm good.
Starting point is 00:02:24 I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. We got a special, we have a special guest in the building. This one is just running a little late. The first special guest we have is Anthony Anderson. Welcome, brother. What's going on, baby? How you feel? I'm good, I'm good. All right. Marcey Martin was supposed to be here. Would you say you blame yourself for her not being here? You know, it's my fault that she has become the star that she is.
Starting point is 00:02:38 And I don't blame her, but she Hollywood today. She know we had to start this at 9.15, and it is now, what time is it? 9.31, she's 16 minutes late. When y'all are filming together, because y'all are in the new movie together, G20. G20, yep. When y'all are filming together, how do you get out of the rhythm and mind state of Black-ish, because y'all did that for so long.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Yeah, you know what, that was something that we never really discussed while we were on set. You know, Viola requested me to be her husband, and then they were looking for someone to play our child or children, and I told them to hire Marseille. And never once did Marseille and I discuss the rhythm that we have had,
Starting point is 00:03:16 because we have a great shorthand with one another for eight years and 175 episodes of Black-ish. But I wanted to make sure that no one confused that or saw us falling to that pattern, just as actors and knowing someone the way that we do. And I hope we didn't. Did you guys see the movie yet? I see something.
Starting point is 00:03:38 No, not yet. Okay. I don't think we did. And it's something that we never discussed with one another, but it's something that we talked about since we've been out doing press, and people ask us that question. Let me ask you a question as an actor, right?
Starting point is 00:03:51 Do you like when interviewers watch the movie beforehand? Because I feel like sometimes, I try to watch Bits and Pieces, but I don't try to watch the whole thing, because I feel like I get the whole movie away. Right. He ruins it. He literally ruins it.
Starting point is 00:04:01 That's you ruining it. Yes. You probably couldn't keep it motherfucking secret. Exactly'd be the nigga that snitching on everybody in the neighborhood. Definitely. Definitely. Don't let that nigga watch the movie first. Cause you want to talk to the person about what you saw. Yeah, yeah. No actually that way you have context and you know we can talk about this. yo, and when it's, so yeah, I like it when they do that. We can have an informed conversation about the work that we did and all that. And then you can talk about, he's like, yo, he was whacking this. And I was like, okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Nah, you don't wanna do that. Nah, be honest, why not? I used to do that. Yeah, that's the Charlemagne de Garde that I know. Yeah, but I don't like doing that no more, because I don't wanna mess up nobody's money. Because I know how hard it is to get these movies made. And so at least I like the movie to live a few weeks.
Starting point is 00:04:47 I know it'll live. Before you shit on it. I didn't say shit on the movie. I just said maybe a scene or two before. Because I didn't just say shit on the movie, Charlamagne. I just wanted to yell, when you did this, man, I didn't believe that. That wasn't unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:04:58 But when you got your ass kicked, that was believable. Got you, got you, got you. I want to go, I'm sorry, I was going to say, I want us to go back to Black-ish, right? I know we talked about it a bunch of times, but why don't you think they make more, I would guess sitcoms like that? Like growing up I had different, we're an old Cosby show, but my kids had Black-ish. Why don't you think they make more sitcoms like that?
Starting point is 00:05:19 Because they do well. They do. I don't know man, you know when Kenya and I looked at the landscape of television, you know at the time before we created Blackish, we looked at what was missing from television for us. And we missed shows like the Cosby show, we missed a different world, we missed shows just even going further back, you know, Good Times, The Jeffersons, All in the Family. Family matters, yeah. You know, shows that have points of view
Starting point is 00:05:49 and characters that were irreverent and that you knew where you stood with them in honesty and authenticity. You just can't make that up. You know what I'm saying? What we did with Black-ish was our life. It was me and Kenya, we sat down and we talked. She's here, ladies and gentlemen, she's here.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Hello, how are you? Good morning, good morning. Oh my God, it was worth the wait. Good morning, good morning. It was worth the wait. I'm gonna be honest with you, he was just talking shit about you. He definitely was.
Starting point is 00:06:20 He knows. I'm aware. He knows. I'm not pushing you. He knows. Hi, baby. And I told him I created this monster. I'm aware. She knows. I'm not a Christian monster. She knows. Hi, baby.
Starting point is 00:06:27 And I told them I created this monster. I'm going to tell you what happened before you walked in. Sure. Back up for a second. Back up for a second. Just back up for a second. I was here talking and Jess realized, and she's like, she ain't here. She just threw your motherfucking mic down just like that.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Hold on. When you, when we, sure, you can use that excuse, Jess. When you watching it, you're going gonna see her just slam your mic down Yeah, that's good Okay, you want to the right time Anthony was answering the question he didn't want to answer anyway Not just landscape of television, you know those things, you know Just can't be created out of thin air and it's just about us telling our authentic stories and and that's what it was That that's how it was born. We would all love to see shows in that vein We would all love to see shows like black Asianish and My Wife and Kids and Bernie Mac and all those shows that I
Starting point is 00:07:30 talked about. But you know, they come once in a lifetime. I shouldn't say once in a lifetime, you know, once in a generation or whatnot when it's something as great as that. Because when we, our show was like a breakthrough and it allowed other shows to happen, you know, um, you know, fresh off the boat, uh, you know, uh, yeah, yeah, right. You know, what Chinese, I've never heard of it, you know, uh, Carmichael show, you know what I'm saying? Not, not, not that it was us that created that, but it was us that created that avenue for other networks. It was like, oh, this is working over there for them. We need our own version of that.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And that's how it happens, man. But you have to have authentic stories with people that people wanna watch and see on television. Both of you and Viola play ex-military in this film. When she called you, you say, okay, I gotta get in some type of shape? Because I know Viola gonna be in shape. How do you know he wasn't in shape before?
Starting point is 00:08:29 I tried. I mean, you don't have to. I ain't gonna disrespect him. Viola's an action figure. I tried. Did you train? I did not train at all. She tricked you.
Starting point is 00:08:36 I'm like, you read the script, I got my ass kicked. I was like, I ain't gotta train for that. Yeah. But no, no, I thought I was in decent shape to portray whatever it is that they needed me to do in this film, and it was cool, it was great. But yeah, when you get a call from not just Viola Davis, Viola is an EGOT, man.
Starting point is 00:08:56 I mean, when somebody likes that, requests you, you have to show up and show out, and I believe that's what we all did, Marseille included. Yeah, how was it shooting in South Africa? Cause y'all were in Cape Town, right? How was that? Yeah, it was beautiful. I loved it.
Starting point is 00:09:12 It was my first time in Africa as a whole. You're welcome. Yeah, it was. You're welcome. He like, you're real dead. Word. All right. I love it.
Starting point is 00:09:21 It was new. It was very new to me and I enjoyed every minute of it. And we got to experience it from any different points of view. Literally, we got in and it was winter there and summer here, right? Yeah. Yeah. And then on the other side of the hemisphere.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Yeah, yeah. So that was a lot. We got to experience like the South African wind storms that they be having, which I had no idea was a thing. And then we went on strike, then we came back, and it was summer there and winter here. So, you know. How did that affect the continuity
Starting point is 00:09:59 of what y'all were doing, the film? I don't think it was that bad. You didn't even notice, honestly. It wasn't, it lasted a few months, but it wasn't bad. It wasn't bad, yeah. We didn't have to reshoot anything. We were able to stop at a great place in the film and come back and pick up where we left off.
Starting point is 00:10:15 And it was up to us as actors and whatnot to be professional. It was like, all right, well, I can't go back to eating the donuts. I gotta be straight. I gotta keep this right I'm all say how's it dealing with Anthony cuz he's been in your life for so long, right? And this is when you a lot younger. You're, I was just going to dub it all up. Just go, just be honest.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Just go talk to him. Just talk to him. Don't worry about it. Just talk to him. Just speak from the heart. He is always and will forever be like my bonus dad. I love him so much. He's seen me from ever since basically I came out the womb
Starting point is 00:11:04 to now. Well, not that far back. I mean, I was- Your real daddy has something to do with that. Yeah, well, I was eight. I was eight. Yeah, that's true. So it's been a minute and I mean, it was so much fun.
Starting point is 00:11:15 And honestly, it was filming once again, it just was like picking up where we left off. But I wanna say this about Marseille. Marseille came in and auditioned for Black-ish at eight years old. I witnessed her greatness. Everything that the world is seeing right now, I witnessed this at eight. And I pulled her aside.
Starting point is 00:11:37 And I told her this. And this is where she is. And I also told her that one day, I'm going to be coming to her and begging for a job. So I just need you to remember this moment right here. So when I come to you, you got my back. And she was like, I got you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Do you feel like you had a childhood, Marce? Yes. Oh, for sure. I mean, it looks different for many people. I mean, I feel like everyone has a childhood. It just looks different. For me, it was just, I've always, even before the show, I grew up around so many adults in my life.
Starting point is 00:12:07 I grew up with my grandma, my great grandma, and everybody in the house. So, and I was an only child for most of my life. So, jumping into a show that was basically the same thing, I mean, it was nothing new. She had an old soul. My nickname for Marseille is Lil' Coretta. I gave her that name at eight years old.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Lil' Coretta. Yeah, she embodies all of that. Yeah, that's Lil' Coretta right there. Very short. Now you promised her a call when she turned 16. Was that true? This topic is crazy. I mean, everybody wanna talk about that.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I was just curious, I just wanna know, have you followed through? I did. Oh, you followed through? I didn't follow, no, I promised you a call. How old are you? 20, right? I'm 20. Oh, so she need four calls.
Starting point is 00:12:46 But first off, she ain't got driver's license. OK, I was going to say that. I'm a responsible parent. I was going to say that. I'm a responsible parent. He didn't know that for a minute, though. He just didn't. You don't think I keep in contact with your mama
Starting point is 00:12:58 and your daddy in real life? I'll talk to them. But still, they ain't like, oh, Marcia ain't got a license. Do you have a license? I don't. That's why you ain't grown. You just grown-ish. But still, they ain't like, oh, Marcia got a license. Do you have a license? I don't. That's why you ain't grown. You just grown-ish. Hold on, hold on.
Starting point is 00:13:09 I do have a car, though. She doesn't just have a car. She has a vehicle. I have a car. I have a car. But Michael, I have a, uh. That's nice. Well, you ain't got tech stops.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Why you telling them what you got? I have something. The world only needs the luxury car. She has a luxury vehicle with no, not even a license. She ain't even got a driver's permit. OK. She must have a driver's permit. You know we call that?
Starting point is 00:13:34 We call that niggish. Yeah. Ah! Have you met her real mom and daddy? Hey, yo. Jesus. You need to meet Carol and Justin. You can write on point.
Starting point is 00:13:45 Listen, listen, it's there whenever I decide to take that. I definitely said I wanted to get it before I turned 21. I can't be legal in these spaces. You've been in these streets for a while. And I'm glad she no longer wants the car that she asked me for, so I'm good. I'm off the hook. Oh yeah, no. She wanted a purple electric car? I'm not gonna mention the name But she wanted a purple electric car and I was gonna get it for I was shopping
Starting point is 00:14:12 I know I literally I went to the I went to the electric car place and and and built it for and all that Yeah, I did. What do you have now? luxury Fossil fuel To get from point a to point I did. What do you have now? I have a luxury vehicle. I was gonna say my price. That takes fossil fuel. Sir, please. A lot of it to get from point A to point B. I have a black mini sports SUV. Stop, stop, why you saying, stop. It's cute.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I know it's cute, it's fly. I need to have any other details. But they don't need that, they don't need. A little sports luxury SUV. It's like a cute SUV. It really is a damn old SUV. Okay, go. So tell us about G20.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Go on, tell about that G wagon you got since we talking about G20. I know, that's right. G20. Cause I got one, give me five. That's right. That's right. That's right.
Starting point is 00:14:54 That's right, Marcy. That's right. Tell us about G20 now. Tell them it's bulletproof, like the President's Beast, like your mama's car, tell them it's bulletproof. G20 is about. Got run flat tires. Tell us about G20. Let's promote, let's promote.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Okay, I thought we were promoting your G wagon. No, let's talk about this movie, G20, that starts streaming globally. Tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow. Yeah. Or, yeah. Yeah, April 10th.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Globally, we just don't make regional movies. We make global movies, right baby girl? I wanted to ask you about that Anthony, because I feel like your international presence has grown tremendously. Have you been intentional about I wanted to ask you about that Anthony, because I feel like your international presence has grown tremendously. Have you been intentional about that? Always been intentional about that man. And you know when it started,
Starting point is 00:15:31 when I started making movies with Jet Li, 20 some odd years ago, first one was Romeo Must Die, and that really was just on a global scale. And then to be able to work with some of the people that I've worked with in Almost 30 years man, you know with Eddie Murphy Martin Lawrence Jim Carrey the Fairleigh brothers Martin Scorsese You know just people like that. It just continues to grow and get bigger
Starting point is 00:15:57 Yeah, so it's it's it really been intentional It was also intentional to move away from the comedy at one point to do more dramatic roles So I wouldn't just be typecast. It's just a dude it was like no this is what I do I've been training at this since I was nine years old so let me really show you my range and what I can do and so we were I was able to do that by doing shows like Law and Order and The Shield and movies like Hustle and Flow and The Departed and things like that all of those were strategic moves. Yeah. And speaking of range, how was it seeing Viola Davis in her action?
Starting point is 00:16:32 Hack. She's a hack. What is that? Action. Is she not real? Action, is this an act? No. No.
Starting point is 00:16:40 It's definitely not an act, let me tell you. No, I said she's a hack. No, I didn't say it's an act. I heard you, I tried to act like I didn't hear you. No, they were like, is she's an act? I said she's an act. Let me tell you. No, I said she's a hack. No, I didn't say it's an act. I heard you. I tried to act like I didn't hear you. No, they were like, she's an act? I said she's an act. Act is good. I didn't hear what you said. It was amazing.
Starting point is 00:16:53 You've seen Viola cry on screen, snot bubbles, you know what I'm saying? We didn't even make a joke about her and her snot bubbles and tears on Blackish. It was great to work out. Beautiful. We don't talk about Viola's snot bubble enough. on Blackish. It was great to work opposite. We don't talk about Viola snot bubble enough. That was like Denzel's glory tip. Yeah, yeah. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:17:12 No, but working with Viola was a dream come true. And I mean, look, man, she's an E. God. Yeah. There are only about 18 E. Gods in the world. And we got to work with one in a very special way. How did that make you step your acting game up, Marthae? I mean, whew.
Starting point is 00:17:31 I mean, obviously you jump into something unprepared. You just kinda wanna, honestly, in that set, it was the most comfortable set to be in, especially with something that was so challenging and so different. But what I loved about Viola is she is, she feels like a family member already. Like she is so-
Starting point is 00:17:53 Marce, go on, tell the world how you made Viola work in the scenes that you was in with her. What do you mean? Tell them how you made her work. Uh-oh. Tell them how you made Viola Davis step her game up. No, listen. This is why Marce was late. This is why Marce was late. She said, I'm gonna have to be dealing with this. No, no, no. Tell the truth, tell her how you made Viola Davis step her game up. This is why Marseille was late. This is why Marseille was late.
Starting point is 00:18:05 She said, look, I'm going to be dealing with this. No, no, no. Tell the truth. Tell the truth. Show me the double, Marseille. No. You wouldn't be sitting here if you didn't make an EGOT work and be like, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Yeah, anyways. Oh, I think. Yes, Coretta. See, they ain't seen the movie yet, little Coretta. And when they see it, they was like, oh, it was right, she made Viola work in them scenes. When you see the film and you see the character arc that my character goes through within her relationship with her mother,
Starting point is 00:18:37 it's a story that I wanted to tell for a very long time. And to be able to have that dynamic. You changed your nail color again? This is the fourth nail color in four days. No it's not. Okay I'm sorry go on finish your story. Go on I just, I love them. Do you like them?
Starting point is 00:18:51 Yes. Yes so it was very special to be able to tell that story with Miss Viola. I mean it was really special. Oh now you're going to show her respect. And I said Miss Viola. Yeah okay I'm just saying, I'm saying if Miss Viola, I mean, it was really special. Oh, now you're going short of respect. And I said Miss Viola. Yeah, okay, I'm just saying. I'm saying if Miss Viola was here doing this interview,
Starting point is 00:19:09 you wouldn't have showed up 17 minutes late. It's all good. Ooh. All right? That's what I'm saying. We in New York, okay. Okay, what that mean? I didn't go to sleep last night.
Starting point is 00:19:18 There's a lot of traffic. Why didn't you go to sleep last night? Because I was outside. You was outside? I was outside. You were outside? Do you remember what you said the first night I came over here?
Starting point is 00:19:27 How goes lower? From Blumhouse TV, iHeart Podcasts, and Ember 20 comes an all new fictional comedy podcast series. Join the flighty Damien Hirst as he unravels the mystery of his vanished boyfriend. And Santi was gone. I've been spending all my time looking for answers about what happened to Santi.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And what's the way to find a missing person? Sleep with everyone he knew, obviously. Hmm, pillow talk. The most unwelcome window into the human psyche. Follow our out of his element hero as he engages in a series of ill-conceived, investigative hookups. Mama always used to say,
Starting point is 00:20:01 God gave me gumption in place of a gag reflex. And as I was about to say, God gave me gumption in place of a gag reflex. And as I was about to learn, no amount of showering can wash your hands of a bad hookup. Now, take a big whiff, my brah. Listen to The Hookup on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to your favorite shows. Hey kids, it's me, Kevin Smith. And it's me, Harley Quinn Smith. That's my daughter, man, wherever you listen to it with your kid. Could be a family show. We're not quite sure. We're still figuring it out. It's a work in progress. Listen to Beardless, me on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:54 I'm Israel Gutierrez and I'm hosting a new podcast, Dub Dynasty, the story of how the Golden State Warriors have dominated the NBA for over a decade. The Golden State Warriors once again are NBA champions. From the building of the core that included Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to one of the boldest coaching decisions in the history of the sport. I just felt like the biggest thing was to earn the trust of the players and let the players know that we were here to try to help them take the next step, not tear anything down. Today, the Warriors dynasty remains alive, in large part because of a scrawny 6'2 hooper who everyone seems to love.
Starting point is 00:21:33 For what Steph has done for the game, he's certainly on that Mount Russmore for guys that have changed it. Come revisit this magical Warriors ride. This is Dubb Dynasty. The Dubb's dynasty is still very much alive. Listen to Dubb Dynasty on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On November 5th, 2018, at 6.33 a.m.,
Starting point is 00:22:04 a red Volkswagen Golf was found abandoned in a ditch out in Sleephole Valley. The driver's seat door was open. No traces of footsteps leaving the vehicle. No belongings were found, except for a cassette tape lodged in the player. On that tape were ten vile... No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Ah! grotesque...
Starting point is 00:22:33 Oh my God. Oh my God. horrific stories that to this day have been kept restricted from the public. Until now. No! No question! have been kept restricted from the public until now. No! No question. You feeling this too?
Starting point is 00:22:50 A horror anthology podcast. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm outside. My pick up this morning was 6.25 for Good Morning America. My driver pulled up. I was walking into the hotel. You are also a man who just puts an outfit on. I gotta like, hair, makeup.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Hair, makeup, you know what it is. You gotta appreciate it. You know what it is. We good, this is your first interview of the day. Marcelle, is this the last movie that you're gonna do? She probably is. Not at all. Listen, I'm used to this.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Cause you seem like you're tired right now. Not at all. I'm used to this. She ain't new to this. She ain't used to this, dog. see like a tie to it right now? Not at all. I'm used to this. She ain't new to this. She ain't used to this, dog. It's been a long press ride. But no, I mean, honestly, we know what the mother and daughter dynamic looks like for many, many people.
Starting point is 00:23:34 I mean, I go through it with my mom, my mom went through it with her mom. So to be able to tell that grounded story within this action-packed world, and I mean, the super high stakes with your mother being the president, I mean, it's a very special thing to tell. Just have a question for you.
Starting point is 00:23:54 I'm sorry. How old is your oldest child? 12. 12. Yes, his son, right? Yep. How is that dynamic with you? You know, Marcey's talking about the dynamic
Starting point is 00:24:02 between daughter and mother. Yeah. You had a dynamic with your mom and what not. How was that dynamic for you as a mother with your son? We are very close. We close. There is nothing that he won't tell me now. At first it was a phase that he went through where he was very close, very guarded you know and it took a while. It took the pandemic for him to open up. That's when I actually set and got to really know who he was and who he was growing into be. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:24:30 So yeah, we close, we're really really close. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. I definitely learned within this time of like, jumping into my 20s and being able to understand my parents more and having more of those deeper intellectual conversations about just life as a whole,
Starting point is 00:24:48 friendships, relationships and all of that, it's like you learn that your parents are, it's their first time living too. Yeah, they're just people. Yeah, they're just people and they are, that's the first time of them having a 20 year old daughter and going through these things. And they had a life before you got here.
Starting point is 00:25:05 And they had a life before. They were somebody before they were your parents. And they're just trying to figure it out. They had a revelation like that in the movies, sorta kinda though, when you realize that my old is like a real. How would you know? You didn't see the movie.
Starting point is 00:25:15 I thought I watched parts of it. Exactly. Oh, you watched his parts of it. Cause I don't like the whole thing cause I feel like I'll spoil it. Oh, so it's for you mentally, like you don't wanna like have the interview. It's hard to ask somebody questions if you've seen it because you give it. He is snitched. Oh, so it's for you mentally. You don't want to have the interview that you just. It's hard to ask somebody questions if you've seen it
Starting point is 00:25:27 because you give it away for everybody. Yes. No, that makes so much sense. I always wanted to. Don't have his back like that. I get you. I understand. I get it.
Starting point is 00:25:34 All right. Yeah. But you did have that revelation in the film. Yes, exactly, which is why I was more excited to tell the story because it felt like I was going through that in real time. So yeah. I want to know as a just a regular person How do you deal with just life with even with dating because it's almost like you have two parents Like does he have to meet the guys too? Yes, I do. It's almost like you got two dads. Yes, I do
Starting point is 00:25:56 I met him. Yeah. Yeah. Oh He drives one of them cars right there. Mm, sir. Sir. They know who your dude is? No, they. I didn't say who he was. Okay, why you give a clue? Do you have a goddad? I do, I do.
Starting point is 00:26:17 And he's a firefighter. Like he's also the same. No, I'm not. You are my bonus dad. Basically like a. Okay. I have multiple, listen, No, I'm not Grew up with like multiple father figures in my life Stop just stop No, it's just you just take it
Starting point is 00:26:40 You can't you can't stop we can't stop the madness I just turn it on when we together doing stuff like this this. Other than that, we good. He's very chill. We have a great relationship. Who takes more credit for your career, Marcy? Kenye or Anthony? Me. Wow. Should tell you. There you go. I said who takes more credit, not who you give more credit to.
Starting point is 00:26:54 I was like, more credit for my career. I mean, myself. That's right, get it, boo. I got what he was saying, yes, yes. I get what he was saying. But me. Myself, he saw it from a very early age. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:27:08 And saw the impact. Yeah, you would've heard that had you got your own time. That was at the beginning. I was, I came in just waxing poetically about you. You're talking about how I saw your greatness at eight when you walked in, there was just a light around you. Yeah. Yeah, there was just a light around you. Yeah What is a blackish reunion look like I don't think it's ever gonna happen
Starting point is 00:27:32 Marseille don't show up the things Why not? Me? No, we would love to have a, we would love, and I hope we have a Black-ish reunion soon. How long have you been since the show ended? Like two, three years? Almost, it's going on three years. Yeah, I was 17 going on 18. Yeah. How close is everybody, the cast,
Starting point is 00:27:59 everybody still keep in touch? Yes, my twin Miles, he's truly my best friend. We call him Playboy Cardi now. Yes. Yes, he's in his Playboy Cardi era, love him. What, he got dreads in his face tattoo? No, no, not yet. He just outside.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Oh, no, I say not yet. He just outside. You know what a white woman, you know that. Oh, damn. If you don't Playboy Cardi, you gotta be in the movie. Oh, okay, well I'm gonna have to stop calling my man Playboy Cardi then. I'm gonna have to think of another name for him.
Starting point is 00:28:27 He just really likes the guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But no, he's my best friend. Hold on, I didn't wanna put that on him. We have a friend group like all together and we're working on some things as a whole. Did you call him back last night? Did you FaceTime him after we were done?
Starting point is 00:28:42 No, I went to sleep. He knows what it is. Oh, that's cold blooded. I was right there when you told him. I have to sleep by 930 mentally, so I'll be every time I'm on my phone. But we talk all the time. How was it this role scratch you, Anthony?
Starting point is 00:28:51 Because you said it's a drama. And you are known for the comedy. And you're also playing the nurtural role. You feel like my man's not an actor. Like he's only going to play one part. Like the head of the household in this one. No, I'm talking like that, Anthony. Yeah, no, I'm not.
Starting point is 00:29:04 I'm talking like an actor. He Yeah, no, I'm not. I'm talking like he's asking questions. I get it. He didn't see nothing. So, you know, again, it goes back to, you know, the dynamic between Marseille and I, you know, not falling into that shorthand that we have. And you know, I've been a part of some great films with action in them. I've never been a part of an action film.
Starting point is 00:29:26 And so I just had to be prepared for that to make sure that it was believable. And it's not all, that's just Ann up there going through the motions and doing that. So, you know, I, I, I showed up, you know, as I could, and to answer your question about, you know, it's, it's role reversal, you know, normally, you know, the, the, the, the man is the president of the United States, you know, and, role reversal. You know, normally, you know, the man is the president of the United States, you know, and the first lady is being the nurturer, so these roles were reversed, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:53 and you rarely get to see that, you know, and I was playing the nurturing role in this character or with this character from my children and allowing the power, not that women don't have power, use that power and have that power in films, but allowing Viola's character to have that power and wield it and not be emasculated by it. And just understand that I'm standing next to this
Starting point is 00:30:18 right here, we're in this together, but she has her role and I have mine. So I just wanted to make sure I showed up for that and not fall flat. And so people's like, okay, that was believable. That was real. Could you be in a relationship like that in real life? I could.
Starting point is 00:30:32 I'm secure in my masculinity and my manhood and who I am and what I bring to the table. So yeah, I could definitely be secure in a relationship. She would have to have the money and power though. It doesn't matter. We're a team. We're a unit. We're working on this together. It's not, oh, you do, nah.
Starting point is 00:30:48 We, just like in any marriage, in any relationship that we have, it's a give and take, it's an ebb and flow. It's like, okay, I'm here doing this, you're doing this. You know, so yeah. How did that work for you, Marcelle? Because you're the boss, yeah? You got your own production company.
Starting point is 00:31:01 You are a boss in 14 year old. Yes. You know? How would you want the man to show up? World wide. Oh wow. Yeah. I think, honestly I think it's communication
Starting point is 00:31:14 and listening and understanding and a willing to understand. I feel like at times I've had multiple conversations with a bunch of different people, and I think the main thing is them ready to respond without actually listening and understanding what the whole situation is. You hear that race car driver guy?
Starting point is 00:31:33 Oh my God. And he's really great at that, honestly. Great at being a race car driver, great at being what you need in a relationship. Emotional, vulnerable, understanding. No, he is. And look, I get that from the two or three conversations that I had with him.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Yeah, no he's great. And I mean I think what's important is that. Cause if he wasn't I was gonna run him off. I was gonna run him off. It's embarrassing dad, that's what it just seems like. Just being real. Hey man you not good enough, but he is. He's the best.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Yeah. And... Look how she smiles and lights up when she talks about it. Right. That's amazing. She was FaceTiming him in the car yesterday, and I was like, oh my God. I had to snatch the phone and talk to him.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I was like, what's up, Playboy? How you doing, man? So he's your calm, like, you know, it's a lot of hype around you. He's my patience. Yes, I was gonna say, how does he deal with your star? Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:32:27 Stability and patience. Those are great things to say about me, thank you. Sure. Patience and stability. I love you Marce Martin. I love you too, and. You know, baby. Oh, that's dope.
Starting point is 00:32:39 That's my girl right there. Yeah, I mean, I think that's the utmost important thing that a lot of men kind of lack is vulnerability. Being able to have that emotion to, and have this kind of like stance as what a man should look like. My therapy is important, like I got homegirls. Therapy is so important.
Starting point is 00:32:58 I got homegirls that say they refuse to date a guy who's not in therapy or hasn't gone to some type of therapy. No, okay. Yeah, or even having the communication. But honestly too, I don't know, I've also seen guys that have therapy that take it the wrong way and it's like, she told me to do this and I'm doing it.
Starting point is 00:33:13 Like it's, it can look like so many different things, but I think just being as open as possible to have that communication is like the top priority for me. So as long as you're listening and hearing me and know what's going on in my life and reassurance is everything. So all of that is important. I know you got your production company and everything.
Starting point is 00:33:36 You've done a lot. She about to ask you for a job, Marcia. So much more. I see where this is going. I see where this is going. That is not my question. Oh, my bad. It sounds like it.
Starting point is 00:33:45 When you first told me that you had a production company, I was like, you know what? I'm going to be auditioning for you. It was like, I'll see you there. And haven't heard anything. But it's OK. Damn, Marce. I mean, shoot, the thing's the they.
Starting point is 00:33:57 Hey. Just hey. Just hey. That's not my question. No. Oh, that wasn't your question? That's not my question. No, it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:34:04 I didn't even ask nothing yet. Damn, I wanted you were? That's not my question. No, it wasn't. I didn't even ask nothing yet. Damn, I wanted to know what else did you want to do? You know, at a very young age, you've done so much. Yeah, thank you. You still got a lot more life to live and a lot more career to go. What else do you want to do? I think seeing how far my creativity can get and how broad it can be, I feel like what
Starting point is 00:34:22 I love about creating TV and film is like, you're basically building these new worlds to where it can be in touch to reality as much as possible or not. And I think that's what I love about just what we do is it feels so real, but it can truly be whatever you want, whatever comes to mind. So I would love to kind of just continue to build worlds
Starting point is 00:34:45 that people can live in, understand, and it be timeless. Yeah. And can last forever. Are you going to run for president? No. I need you to create this world. Mm-mm.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Okay. Jesus. But yeah, I mean, I'm working on my festival right now, which is very world building for me, which is very exciting. What's the festival? It's called Say Summer Cookout. I'm working on my festival right now, which is very world building for me, which is very exciting. What's the festival? It's called Say Summer Cookout.
Starting point is 00:35:08 And it's a destination type of festival. So the first year was in Atlanta, second year was in D.C. This year it'll be in Houston. Nice. In August 31st. So that would be exciting. What do you do there?
Starting point is 00:35:21 What do we do? It's black owned owned businesses vendors from, it's like Texas based vendors this year. We have performers of course, that is from and catered to that community and it's HBCU centered. So I think that is something that I've always wanted to do. It's an avenue that I feel like is so untouched
Starting point is 00:35:40 and mostly overlooked. And I'm very excited to, and also be in touch with, with, I mean, adults, new adults my age. You know, going through the same things. I mean, even though I'm doing this and you see a camera on my face, there is no difference between that person and I. When the camera goes off.
Starting point is 00:36:01 And it's no phones, it's no phones. Oh wow. It was the first year we did no plus ones. It was literally come as you are and to be able to have these celebrities and these students wanna become them one day or do something in that light and they have real conversations at the cookout.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Yeah. I mean it's something that I've truly wanted to do. And then on top of that we have podcasts, of course still movies coming up. I have a movie coming out with Corneen B. Vance soon, which is very exciting. That's okay, we're not here to talk about those things. I mean, we're talking, she said, what's next?
Starting point is 00:36:34 Okay, are you just talking, are you gonna just say other movies? You're gonna just say other movies. Right now we're talking about G20, with Anthony Anderson, and Viola Davis. Which is also amazing, and that's the next thing coming up. Just more world building things,
Starting point is 00:36:47 things that challenge me. I'm gonna challenge you. Congratulations on your festival. The hour is almost up. Actually, tell me what do you want to do in the industry? Horror movies and comedy. Horror movies and comedy. I got a little drama to me too.
Starting point is 00:37:02 I could cry on cue all that. Okay, sweet. Just did it on live a couple weeks ago. She could cry on. You know, I can crown you all it a couple weeks ago You can sing too? All of it, all of it. Okay, I got you. Now that I know, I see you. Marce, is there a reason that I haven't been invited to your little festival for the last two years? Your little festival, wow. I love that festival. The little festival is definitely not new. But it's exciting,
Starting point is 00:37:32 because we are expecting like six to 8,000, which is exciting. And you're teaching your generation how to actually have conversation and to network with people and look people in the eyes and talk in a real way. That's building a real community, not that digital social media stuff.
Starting point is 00:37:45 Yeah. Well, you were invited. No, I wasn't. You've known since the beginning. No, okay. She said no phones. Are you coming this year? Knowing since the beginning and being like,
Starting point is 00:37:53 hey, I need you to come talk to my peer group or two different things. Are you coming this year? You have stars there and just talking to people that want to be like them one day. I mean, what's up? Are we coming this year? August 31st, I'll be in Houston.
Starting point is 00:38:04 All right, beautiful. They got to go. That's another promise, let's see. No, only I year? August 31st, I'll be in Houston. All right, beautiful. I love it. That's another promise. Let's see. No, only I do. She ain't got nothing else going on. Show up with that purple car. She didn't already shot her Vogue cover shoot yesterday.
Starting point is 00:38:15 She ain't got nothing. Oh, you did Vogue yesterday? No, I definitely did not. I don't know why he's talking about it. He's manifesting. I thought it was Vogue. I thought you just had all that under control. I mean, sure.
Starting point is 00:38:23 Let's do it one day. You got your own makeup line. I did a lot of press yesterday, though. Yeah, you did. So we was running around like this. I thought you just had all that under control. I mean, sure. Let's do it one day. You got your own makeup and all. I did a lot of press yesterday though. Yeah, you did. So we was running around like that. Yeah, I mean, yeah. I want to end with this.
Starting point is 00:38:31 I asked Anthony this question earlier, but when y'all film together, how do you get out of the rhythm of Black-ish? Cause y'all know each other so well, personally and professionally. Seems like it never leaves. It definitely not. But it has to when you, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:44 doing something like G20. I think it touches back what I was saying about creating a whole new world. I think you're building a character. For me, I'm building like, okay, where did she come from? What were the experiences that she went through to get to this point now where she feels like she needs to be rebellious?
Starting point is 00:39:00 Or is this a new thing for her? How new is it? So I think these are all of these, all these questions that I put in my brain before jumping into a role, especially someone like Serena who is very multifaceted and kind of just not really understanding. They don't know who Serena is.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Serena is who I portrayed in G20. Oh, you know that much? Yeah, when I watched it, I saw that part. Oh, okay. But like, yeah. You're not lying. What do you mean? You're lying.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Could you let one thing talk? What's wrong with you? When I watched it, I saw it. Really? Serena was amazing. A lot of layers. Maybe mention her name in the trailer. So I was just wondering.
Starting point is 00:39:36 For me, it's like, what makes you different than any of the other characters that I played? So that's my take on it. And she's dope in it. Thank you. Congratulations. Yes, she it. And she's dope in it. Thank you. Yes, she's dope in it. Congratulations. Yes, she was. He said the typical stuff.
Starting point is 00:39:48 I was like, yes, she was. I saw it. I saw it. Well, G20 is streaming now on Amazon. Not just streaming now, streaming globally. Tell the people globally. We don't make regional films. Thank you so much, Marce Martin and Anthony Anderson.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Oh, I thought you forgot about me. Now she told me to say her name first. Yeah, now you're saying her name first. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:40:04 I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm don't make regional films. That's right. Thank you so much, Marce Martin and Anthony Anderson. Oh, I thought you forgot about me. Now she told me to say her name first. No, she should. No! I got you late, how did I do that? Yeah, you just did.
Starting point is 00:40:13 She texted me. By showing up the way that you did. They know who the real diva is. I bow down to you. You've earned it, Marce. Yes, you have. In your young 20 years of life, you have earned it. First on the call sheet.
Starting point is 00:40:25 She was the reason we got the first three seasons of The Lackers on the air. I'm just gonna give it to her. Oh, well, God bless you. There's gonna be a movie where somehow, some way he play your son. What? But somehow, some way, we gonna have a good dad.
Starting point is 00:40:40 So she can son me? That's right. That's right. I gotta say. You got a one on that, Marci. I ain't fixing something. I'm sorry. And then you got to put me in here.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Let's make it a horror flick. It has to be a horror flick. You get stated by Craig. You're going to be able to make it just in it. She did that, not me. Not me. That was all her. It's The Breakfast Club.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Good morning. Wake that ass up. Early in the morning. The Breakfast Club. Hey, kids. It's me, Kevin Smith. And it's me, Harley Quinn Smith. That's my daughter, man, who my wife has always said is just a beardless, d***less version of me.
