I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families called Historical Records. Executive produced by Questlove, The Story Pirates, and John Glickman, Historical Records brings history to life through hip-hop. Each episode is about a different inspiring figure from history. Like this one about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa
Starting point is 00:02:45 Parks did the same thing. Check it. And it began with me. Did you know, did you know? I wouldn't give up my seat. Nine months before Rosa, it was called a moment. Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records. Because in order to make history history you have to make some noise
Starting point is 00:03:06 listen to historical records on the iHeartRadio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts wake that ass up in the morning the breakfast club i'm good morning everybody it's dj nv jess hilarious charlamagne the guy Guy. We are The Breakfast Club. We got some special guests with us. Yes, indeed. We got the brother Ryan Johnson and Chad Ocho Cinco. Welcome, brother. What's up with y'all?
Starting point is 00:03:31 I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be here. Ocho, you're like a cultural icon in a way, man. You think so? Yeah, from sports to hip-hop. Absolutely. And it's been like this for a while.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Yeah, and I never really viewed myself like that. I kind of just enjoy having fun. regardless of what atmosphere I'm put in. I adapted my surroundings and just act accordingly. Yeah. That's about it. I don't, I don't see it like that though. I need you and Shannon.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Y'all can't be looking at just like that though. I don't like it. It wasn't him. It was both of them. It was Shannon. It wasn't him. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:01 That's my dog. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah dog. That's my dog. We ain't going to wait, right? Okay, okay. You know, I directed it in the right way. Okay, okay, okay. Because I don't think Shannon understood or knew about my homie, you know?
Starting point is 00:04:14 Got you. And so I kind of ain't really indulging it, but, you know, we good. He didn't mean no disrespect. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It just felt like, all right, all right, all right, cuz. Stop looking at my sister like that. I'm not. That's why he said, I was like, I understand where you're coming from.
Starting point is 00:04:30 And I just left it at that. There you go. And when you left it alone, it was left alone. See? So yeah, there you go. You didn't need it. So how's it dealing with Shannon Shaw, with all the beef that he's getting in right now? It seems like he's arguing with everybody.
Starting point is 00:04:41 It's coming from everywhere. And I told Unc, I say, Unc, this is what we got to do. We can't set a precedent every time somebody say something. Y'all get to get and apologize. We're going to have to make an example out of somebody. Is that what Jeff told me yesterday? Yeah. See, I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Just one person. We got to make an example out of somebody. Because what's going to happen is people are going to see, well, damn, if he can come at him and just say I'm sorry, then they squash everything. I say, no, that's not going to happen. Because now you see it's starting to be a trickle effect. gonna see well damn if he can come at him and just say i'm sorry then they squash everything i say no that's not gonna happen because now they still now you see it's starting to be a trickle effect now everybody got these little jokes so i'm off papers now i'm on probation right right right you know i'd be in the streets i'm like that so my girl got insurance on me as if anything happened to me i told i got you i'm to be your enforcer. You know,
Starting point is 00:05:25 Griselda had an enforcer. Escobar had an enforcer. For Unc, I'm the enforcer. And I'm, it's whatever. It's up and stuff. But you got to tell him
Starting point is 00:05:32 too, a lot of that does come with the territory. I know, I know, I know. You know what I'm saying? I think he understand that.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Especially all these years, especially playing football, dealing with the media, dealing with the other side. Now, Unc being on the other side with the media, I mean,
Starting point is 00:05:41 we do it to the players. Yeah. We do it to the players that's playing. So, I mean, all jokes, I don't think it do it to the players. That's the plan. So I mean, all jokes. I don't think it bothers them because we've been in it so long. I enjoy it.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I like the jokes. You look like you enjoy it. Yeah, I want you talking shit about me. Oh, shit, I'm sorry. You can curse. You can curse. Okay, well, fuck that. I love what y'all doing.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I love seeing all the athletes that are controlling their own platforms from y'all to Cam to the Pivot to all the smoke. I love it.'all doing. I love seeing all the athletes that are controlling their own platforms from y'all to Cam to the pivot to all the smoke. I love it. We need that because you got to understand us as athletes. Remember, the mainstream media controlled how we're perceived on the outside. So ESPN and Fox and all those were able to get out to the masses and try to tell them who we really are. Now we've cut out the middleman, and we are the voice. We are the voice now, and I think it's dope.
Starting point is 00:06:28 I think it's really dope. I think it's amazing. I wanted to ask you, we were talking about it the other day, Russell Wilson. I know you came here for other business, but I just wanted to ask you this first. Russell Wilson. I'm here.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I got five hours. Okay. So I must take you guys. I'm ready. No more. Russell Wilson, so he was released, but he still gets $85 million and can play for another team? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Yeah, most definitely. Obviously, it's the owners. It's the owners. The owners of the Broncos come in very rich, very wealthy family, but have no understanding of what it takes to build a winning team, a winning organization. So you think you get Russell Wilson, you pay him all this money, and everything's supposed to, at the snap of a finger, just turn around. That's not the way it works. You bid around him. It takes time to build a winning team. Obviously
Starting point is 00:07:06 in business, what you guys do, you fix everything with money. It's not the way it works in the NFL. Especially as an owner. If you have an NFL background, you understand that. But listen, you pay him all this money. You have dead cap now. You have to pay him what? $85 million. $85. He gets to go to another team
Starting point is 00:07:22 and double dip. You get the double dip the owner is really not understanding and having like dude it takes time to win you know Russell Wilson former NFL
Starting point is 00:07:37 Super Bowl winning quarterback he's been to multiple playoffs multiple Pro Bowls he knows what it takes I mean you're impatient because you always do everything with money and you try to fix situations, but in the NFL, it's not going to work like that. It does make me wonder if Russell was that good in Seattle or was the system that good in Seattle. Russell, he was that good.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Okay. Yeah, he was that good. And I think he was good, especially this past season. He was good as well. He showed you he was not – obviously, the first year wasn't as good as we liked, but Russell Wilson played up the par and they still let him go.
Starting point is 00:08:09 And now what? You just set everybody back again because you starting all over again. Who you gonna bring in? There's nobody out there. Yeah. Ryan, you are the CEO and founder of Community Media.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Tell us about that. No, for sure. And again, we're excited to be out here for sure. But Community Media, Tell us about that. No, for sure. And again, we're excited to be out here for sure. But Community Media, we're a media company based in Atlanta, Georgia, with the mission to basically amplify black creators, black gamers. And that's actually how we got to link with Chad. Almost about a year ago, we were brought into an opportunity to create an experience at the MLS All-Star Game last year that happened in Washington, D.C.
Starting point is 00:08:44 But what a lot of people haven't realized is that all the professional sports leagues, the MLS, the NFL, and the NBA, they all now have professional gaming leagues attached to their leagues as well. So we were part of the EMLS experience. We got to shoot some content with Chad, and that really started the conversation that ultimately led to him becoming like our first ambassador, not only for community media, but what we're building across the HBCU Esports League and the HBCU gaming ecosystem as well.
Starting point is 00:09:07 So literally for us, we throw live gaming events, live concerts, working with major brand partners like Verizon, Discover, Nike, Hot Pockets, Mountain Dew, and you're really utilizing these platforms to provide other means of scholarships for young black and brown students. It's crazy. I had to DJ something at the Barclays and it was a gaming event and I didn't know what it was. They paid me outside.
Starting point is 00:09:27 I go DJ. And the fact that it was sold out just to watch people game. Yeah. I said, Jesus Christ, this is a business, man. I never knew people would pay that much to see other people game,
Starting point is 00:09:39 not a regular game, like to play on a joystick. I'm like, this is amazing. And that's, I guess what part of what you're doing. Yeah. So like a few years ago when we started this whole thing what we learned is that 83 percent of black youth play video games on a daily basis but when you look at the global 200 billion dollar
Starting point is 00:09:53 industry there's only four percent of us that work full-time in that industry so just like everything else like in media like in you know the front office of sports like in tech so what we decided to do is like how do we engage our community because the first thing we always need to know is like we have to be engaged and entertained in order to get like in stream interest so like how do we create avenues to like help young black and brown kids turn their passions into professions so yeah we focus a lot on the competition but we're really really more so focused on helping these kids learn how to become content creators learn how to code their own video games, learn how to be in legal professions. Like there's everything really ties back into this space.
Starting point is 00:10:28 You know, health professions, doctors and surgeons helping with carpal tunnel. So we're not necessarily trying to bring people into gaming per se, but we're saying like, yo, if this is a passion for yours, here are all of these different avenues and areas that you can tap into because our community has always been told to get off the joystick when other communities have been in this space for 10, years and now we're playing catch up so coming back to 2020 is when my business partner chris he went to north carolina central i went to oakwood university in hudson alabama and we were literally just talking in the office one day we're like yo i bet you my school can be your school and call it duty out the blue we found four kids from my school his
Starting point is 00:11:03 school they went head to head they loved it so much they told all their friends at other hbcus and like yo let's just start a league for this that's dope but i think you know i see you wearing a fam you went let me get a little uncomfortable yeah just get my thing right there y'all know who's wearing the gear you know just just i'm wearing the greatest hbcu of all time not just fam you this is the highest of the seven hills okay well this is Hampton University, the real H-U, just to feel comfortable, Mr. Oakley. But I was going to ask, do you think the HBCU
Starting point is 00:11:32 should change the curriculum? Because a lot of them are real old school, and I'm sure they don't have a gaming content where these kids are making millions of dollars, and even YouTube creators making millions of dollars, hundreds of millions. So the answer is yes. Up until 2020, this didn't exist in the HBCU ecosystem. Like it was brand new.
Starting point is 00:11:48 So the competition, the curriculum development, the internship opportunities, all that is now being put in place. Because I'll be real with you. Like our goal is not to sell like hoop dreams to the black community that, yo, if you get into gaming, you will make a million dollars. Because that's very few and far in between. But you can get a decent job. You can have a nice paying job doing something that you love to do. But it's really about first and foremost educating everybody, right? So that's why this opportunity for us is so important
Starting point is 00:12:12 because having that microphone to let people that look like us know that these opportunities exist is step one. Once that becomes a thing, I guess taking a step back too, it's really, really important to understand that like 30, I think close to 30 out of 50 states in this country also now have varsity high school esports. So a few years ago, we actually partnered with the New York City Department of Education and we ran a tournament called the Battle of the Boroughs in partnership with Microsoft, which was literally a Minecraft tournament to engage kids during COVID and like keep them engaged in their high schools. And like so for us, it's like, you know, as this ecosystem is being built out at the high school level, it's being built out at the college level. What we noticed is that there was no black schools in general. There was no inner city schools and there were no HBCUs taking
Starting point is 00:12:52 advantage of this. So it was like, what do we have to build? What do we have to create? Who do we have to tap into to like really build out this ecosystem? So for me, we look at gaming the same way we look at football and basketball. You have high school leagues. You have AAU programs. You have after-school programs. You have professional leagues. You have job opportunities. And that's the same pipeline that we're building and establishing right now across gaming. Is that what y'all was pushing at Cannes last year?
Starting point is 00:13:15 Yeah, so actually when we seen you in Cannes, the event you was at was actually like our gaming activation. Really? It was crazy. They unplugged everything before the party started because they thought it was gonna make the room too hot exactly so that space though was rented from a larger activation that week and so that entire week at can we had gaming activations we're doing panels we're educating brands and agencies about how do you invest in this space that's what we was talking to you about in france got you it was funny like we've met charlemagne close to seven years
Starting point is 00:13:46 ago now, when you did your first Black Privileged book signing in Atlanta. And every time I seen her, I'm like, yo, I don't know when or how it's going to happen, but we're going to end up on here, and we're going to be talking about what we're going to do. And then, lo and behold, the opportunity came up. And we're also creating that experience again this upcoming summer at Cannes as well. So shout
Starting point is 00:14:02 out to her name is Adrienne Smith with Inkwell Beach. Oh yeah. Inkwell Beach. So that's exactly who we were. Now Chad you had dinner with Antonio Pierce the Raiders coach? Yeah. And you tweeted that you were going to ask for a coaching job? Yeah. Actually I was going to ask y'all for a job too.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I was going to ask y'all. I know y'all have an opening. I know y'all can make some space. It's just got filled. No, no, no, no, no. We can add. We can add. Add another chair. The more the better. The merrier. But I was in Vegas Super Bowl and I went and had
Starting point is 00:14:34 it wasn't just me. Obviously other people were there with Mr. Pierce and having dinner. And I just tweeted out the picture with him and I. I'm playing around. I'm a jokester about, listen, I finally got offered a job as a Raiders coach. And then Antonio went behind me and said, I can't wait to have you
Starting point is 00:14:50 working with our receivers. That's what sparked it. I can't coach. I have 37 other jobs. I have 37 other jobs right now and I wouldn't have time. Coaching is really not my thing. You got a passion for football though. I have a passion for the game of football and not coaching.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I have a passion for playing. If there's somebody that want to bring me back, then I'll come and do that. At 46, you would play? I'm 56. Yeah, what I play? Stop listening to me. Be a jokester. If you 56 and calling Shannon Unc something wrong. I mean, you say Unc in general.
Starting point is 00:15:22 I was born in 68. Oh my god So y'all ain't So that means y'all Ain't do your homework I did We did my homework 46
Starting point is 00:15:29 You born in 1977 I was born in 1960 At a Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Oh my god We stopping there So would you Would you play the league
Starting point is 00:15:38 Would I Yeah Today You can't even hit nobody Yeah I'd be able to play You can't hit nobody Look at the rules Look at the rules.
Starting point is 00:15:46 They're playing flag football. You think that ruins the game? You know what? The NFL is all about protecting the players. But again, I see they're trying to add an 18th week. Is it really about protection? Or is it about the bottom line at the end of the day? Money. Maybe we know what it is. Come on now.
Starting point is 00:16:04 The players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger, but the dimensions of the day, money. Maybe we know what it is. Come on now. The players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger, but the dimensions of the field have yet to change. So if everybody's bigger, faster, and stronger, there's only so much you can do in making the car safe. Because at some point, if you're driving 100 miles an hour, you're crashing into a wall. Regardless of what you do from a technical aspect, you're going to get hurt.
Starting point is 00:16:21 The car is going to crumble. I mean, same thing when it comes to football players. Do you think widening the field would make people safer? I mean, it would help with everybody. You got D. Lydman, 350 pounds, you know, running 4.5. What? I seen that the other day. Yeah, crazy.
Starting point is 00:16:39 So why do you drive a Prius? I drive a smart car. That's what I'm saying. It's one of the safest vehicles out there, very cost efficient. I get 55 miles to the efficient. I get 55 miles a gallon. I get 55 miles a gallon and I can park anywhere. People always make fun of my damn car. But no, because you said it's
Starting point is 00:16:51 smart. That would make it more prone to, if you get in an accident, it'd be something bad. No, no. It's one of the safest. It's been battle tested. Okay. That's why I drive it. And obviously, because I'm cheap as hell. I've been having that since like 2004. Wow. And I just, my friend, I ain't been in New York in about, maybe feel like to me, like 11, 12 years. I sit been having that since like 2004. Wow. I ain't been to New York in about maybe, feel like to me, like 11, 12
Starting point is 00:17:07 years. I see the New York Police Department. They got smart cars. Yeah. Oh, who they gonna catch? That's traffic. Oh, it's traffic. That's traffic. So they ain't trying to go after nobody. No, no, no. That's traffic. Look at them copying my style. Was you serious about, I think Dion wanted you at Colorado
Starting point is 00:17:23 at one point or that was a rumor? Right now I work for the Buffs as a recruiter So I'm just recruiting for Prime So he send you out just to talk to the players? Yeah he don't have to see me I do it myself Actually I can't tell when he bullshit I wouldn't lie to you
Starting point is 00:17:44 I lied for you before i lied to you yeah yeah yeah so you do it but it's not official it's official because if i'm doing it i ain't doing it for free i don't do i don't do nothing but he doesn't have to tell you already know who you should be looking at already bingo got you got you got you because we over there in colorado we're trying to beef up the interior offensively and defensively so i know exactly what i'm doing got you yeah got you and and uh you made a bet before the Super Bowl that if the Chiefs lost you would give up eating McDonald's we know you love McDonald's yeah yes I can't believe you ain't never got a deal with McDonald's to be honest with you I own three
Starting point is 00:18:13 franchises so I really can't have a deal that's right you better flex thank you you said you would divorce your wife and give up sex for the rest of the year yeah were you really ready to give all that up I mean I knew the Chiefs were gonna win so that's why i made something i knew the chiefs were gonna win that's why i made such an extreme bet yeah yeah she was pissed she was pissed but i needed her to understand you know who you married sometimes i go out on a limb i say some things that you're not going to agree with but you know how i feel about you and i'm going to we'll be good you see who won the game right that's right absolutely yeah i got the script you got this i got the script you believe that when people say that the nfl scripted you can't script that you got 11 dudes that no
Starting point is 00:18:49 hell no it's impossible but if you talk about jobs what y'all think about what bringing me in now i don't think it'll work as a full uh i don't need to be full-time part-time like monday and tuesday i'm at four i don't know if the four could i don't want to be full-time, part-time, like Monday and Tuesday. I'm at four. I don't know if the four could work. Why not? Because it's like a triangle offense. But that's outdated. No. It is outdated.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Not in radio. In NBA, not in radio. And then sometimes we got five because we have Teslin Figueroa, who she does front-page news, politics. So sometimes it's, you know. You mean four. So this is like your way of telling me. No, it'll be if he comes on.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Oh, yeah, it'll be five. I think they're telling you no, Chad. Is that your way of telling me. If he comes on, it'll be five. Is that your way of telling me no? I think they're telling you no. Yeah, pretty much. I'm too dark, huh? Oh my God. I'm dark. No, but you lightening every week. We don't see it. Were you really thinking about going to the UFL?
Starting point is 00:19:40 Nah, hell nah. How much they pay? I don't know. You said that. You tweeted. You don't even know what you be tweeting. Yes, you tweeted that you were considering playing for the Memphis Showboats. I'd be in a moment.
Starting point is 00:19:52 I'd see something. Yeah. And then I instantly tweet it and I forget about it. But the fact that you mentioned the UFL, I want to know how much they pay. Yeah, I don't even know. Because I'm trying to diversify my portfolio. Yes. And my resume.
Starting point is 00:20:02 And the fact that you won't hire me, I mean, I were for black people i thought you were for uplifting i'm trying to understand what's the problem well speaking of uplifting you know your uncle shannon he be do you feel like he puts himself in in a lot of these positions himself like for instance like him jumping out the car the like two days ago what do you think no what do you think about it? It was cool. He's promoting his liquor brand. Okay. Promoting his congack. He was doing a signing. He was explaining it to people.
Starting point is 00:20:31 He's on the road. He has to fly here, fly there, do signings. And it's, I like it. Of course, people making,
Starting point is 00:20:39 trying to make jokes and lighting every goddamn thing he does. Everything. And, dude, my aunt is hurt. He had two hip replacements. That's what I said.
Starting point is 00:20:46 That's what I said. We understand. That's what I jumped to. Hall of Famer. He's been beat up. You know, technology wasn't as advanced as it is now. So being able to recover from some of those injuries, it's tough. And he grown.
Starting point is 00:20:58 He's tough. You're 55 years old and you got to run this circuit now? Like, you got a whole new life in media? Yeah. You're like, okay, now. Always on the go go yeah so there's a microscope microscope on them obviously you bring somebody on you because you're volatile towards everybody else so they're going to be volatile back i think he understands that and you have to welcome that and he's okay with it i welcome it too i want i need people to come at me because I got jokes. Well, you got to do something. I do. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Damn. Tell me what to do. You got to do something to put yourself out there. Okay, okay. I still don't believe you're 56. He's not 56. How are you 46? Look at the wrinkles now. Look at the wrinkles. Where? You see it? No.
Starting point is 00:21:41 The lady put makeup on me so it's hard to see. You got no makeup on me you know all right look at the angle you see it no are you an asap rocky related in any way y'all know me and asap cousins now i gotta explain everything there's a reason me hey we look just alike right y'all y'all i'm just i'm tall as hell just asap he's been the fashion i'm at target at Target, H&M, Zara. So that missed me. And I'm not really spending no money.
Starting point is 00:22:08 He get his stuff free. And I think we're going to collab on something in the future. I've really been getting into music and trying to, again, diversify my portfolio. You never know what Ocho is playing. I don't know. But one thing I've always liked about him is I do like how frugal you are. I'm cheating. Like, I've learned a lot of ways of just being frugal, watching you over the years.
Starting point is 00:22:29 That just started. That just started. No, it did not. Ocho had some cars. He had Lambos. He had big trucks. That was about 15 years ago. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:22:35 That was 20 years ago. That was 20 years ago. You got to understand, the fruits of my labor, those were not bought with football money. That was from, obviously i i own three what pingo so i'm not spending anything i'm using or my hard-earned money on the field the stuff i did off the field tv shows endorsements card signings and then you got to think those cars you just name i only had for three years and got rid of them because i didn't need anymore my name my name ocho it was it was a It was a little bigger than anything I could purchase at the time.
Starting point is 00:23:06 So it made no sense. Visually, visibly, you know who I was no matter where I went. So what the fuck am I buying a goddamn Lambo for? Why am I driving a Ferrari? Nigga, you Ocho. It didn't make any sense. Even though outside of the image, know when you're young you know you're trying to impress the women and but what man i'm holding oh shit no you're good the women
Starting point is 00:23:31 have already googled what you're making so there's no need bro one day me and pete davis pete davison wanted to go buy cuban link chains i remember this you okay and i i told him i said we don't need to buy real ones because i saw you say that. Yeah. And so we went and got $3,000 gold-plated Cuban. Ain't nobody ask no questions. Stay in his neck. Stay in his neck. Your neck was green as a monster. Stay in his neck.
Starting point is 00:23:53 But ain't nobody ask no questions. Yeah. I mean, listen, man. For one, it's hard for people to move the way I've moved. I've been doing this now the past 30 years. It's hard because people, we caught up in the image. And looking a certain way becomes your identity. Driving a certain car becomes part
Starting point is 00:24:08 of your identity. People focus on image and look in a certain way because I want to look like I got it. I just was the complete opposite and really didn't care what anybody thought. I wanted to ask you too, man. You remember when French Montana made Ocho Cinco? Ocho Cinco.
Starting point is 00:24:23 You know what? I have a problem. I need to holla at French for my royalties. Yeah, because I ain't getting no royalties. Can't even hit you up and ask you, can you do that? It's not his place. I don't think you get royalties for saying your name, right? No, I don't know. I don't think so. How many women offered you
Starting point is 00:24:39 Ocho Cinco because of that song? What's that? On my left hand. This was back in the day. That's always so long ago. He don't indulge. Yeah, I don't like that. I ain't trying to start no argument. I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I'm with you. I'm with you. When I get home, you're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:24:53 You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:24:54 You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:24:54 You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:24:55 You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:24:55 You're not. You're not. You're not. I don't move because offering, there's always something on the back. It is a catch. You got to think anything on the outside is always an added expense. Yeah. Because there ain't nothing free. Yeah. Even if they offering.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Mm-hmm. You got to give something to give. Mm-hmm. I ain't doing that. How'd you feel about the record? It ain't bother me. Yeah. It ain't bother me.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Mm-hmm. You know, we all make mistakes in life. Mm-hmm. We all do. You know, I pick myself up, dust myself off, put my head forward and kept moving. I fucked up. See?
Starting point is 00:25:32 DJ, Jess, I fucked up. Real shit. Took responsibility. You gotta keep moving. That's it. Ain't look back. I've been fighting. I've been fighting that mountain I fell from ever since. Fighting to climb back. We here now. And you look back. I've been fighting. I've been fighting that mountain I fell from ever since. Fighting to climb back.
Starting point is 00:25:47 We here now. And I just asked for a job and y'all told me no. I was just talking about head. I know. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I'm just bringing it for a circle. Yeah, got you. His head leaves the other things. He was just bringing it
Starting point is 00:26:03 all around. I tell you what you don't fuck up on parenting yo i love the way you are with your daughter yo i love this shit that shit is amazing i love this i mean you got one or two i got i have one on the way and then i have uh an 11 year old boy y'all man i love it i love it i'm on i'm on i mean i have 11 you have 11 children. Damn. Man, stop listening to him. You know I don't have 11 kids, man. Because you stopped listening to this man already. You got 11 kids, man. This man is an entertainer, man. So he was Nick Cannon before Nick Cannon. I was Nick Cannon before Nick Cannon.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I was future before future. I know. That's right. You know, I've been doing this for a very long time. I'm not sure why I would love when they talk about fathers. I would wish they would want me in that. You should be in there. I should be in there because I also have a lot of kids
Starting point is 00:26:45 and I'm I'm hands-on I'm thankful for those I have kids from and uh they're really what makes this this train roll you know go because most of the time people that have one just one they're going through hell yeah and it's hard to to find success when you don't have kids with the right people. Yeah. It's hard because they can make a life of living hell. Yeah. Living hell. And I do have 11.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Serious. All together. I believe you. You got 11? Nobody going to lie about having more. Well, I don't lie about that. Niggas lie about. I got.
Starting point is 00:27:19 So, what, you had three over the last year? Yeah. Yeah, I'm working. I'm working. You got no leather kids, man. I'm working.'m working eight i ain't see no 11 but well i'm married so then i have the those are also my kids okay yeah so 11 and i'm working on 12 right now oh no that's right yeah that's right yeah keep on multiplying congrats on the ring of honor too. Appreciate it. How'd that feel? It was cool.
Starting point is 00:27:52 It's good to, obviously as much as I gave back to that city of Cincinnati, I love the fans. I had fun. I did all I could. Obviously the end goal is to win a Super Bowl. I can't do that by myself. We fell short as far as that is concerned. But to receive those flowers for all the work that you put in throughout those years, it means a lot. And to see my name obviously embedded, cemented into that stadium, that was a good feeling.
Starting point is 00:28:18 A good feeling, man. Because not too many times are we able to get the flag. Is your country falling apart? Feeling tired? Depressed? A little bit revolutionary? Consider this. Start your own country. I planted the flag. I just kind of looked out of like, this is mine. I own this. It's surprisingly easy. There's 55 gallons of water for 500 pounds of concrete.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Everybody's doing it. I am King Ernest Emmanuel. I am the Queen of Laudonia. I'm Jackson I, King of Kaperburg. I am the Supreme Leader of the Grand Republic of Mentonia. Be part of a great colonial tradition. The Waikana tribe owned country. My forefathers did that themselves. What could go wrong? No country willingly gives up their territory. I was making a racket with a black powder, you know, with explosive warhead. Oh my God. What is that?
Starting point is 00:29:07 Bullets. Bullets. We need help! We need help! We still have the off-road portion to go. Listen to Escape from Zakistan. And we're losing daylight fast. That's Escape from Z-A-Q-istan on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your

As a kid, I really do remember having these dreams and visions, but you just don't know what is going to come for you. Alicia Keys opens up about conquering doubt, learning to trust herself, and leaning into her dreams. I think a lot of times we are built to doubt the possibilities for ourselves. For self-preservation and protection, it was literally that step by step. And so I discovered that that is how we get where we're going. This increment of small, determined moments.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Alicia shares her wisdom on growth, gratitude, and the power of love. I forgive myself. It's okay. Like grace. Have grace with yourself. You're trying your best. And you're going to figure out the rhythm of this thing. Alicia Keys, like you've never heard her before.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's up? This is Ramses Jha. Starting point is 00:32:20 Listen to Civic Cipher every Saturday on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. So, y'all, this is Questlove, and I'm here to tell you about a new podcast I've been working on with the Story Pirates and John Glickman called Historical Records. It's a family-friendly podcast. Yeah, you heard that right. A podcast for all ages. One you can listen to and enjoy with your kids starting on September 27th. I'm going to toss it over to the host of historical records. Nemany to tell you all about it. Make sure you check it out.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Hey y'all Nemany here. I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families called historical records. Historical records brings history to life through hip hop. Flash slam. another one gone. Bash, bam, another one gone. The crack of the bat and another one gone. The tip of the cap, there's another
Starting point is 00:33:13 one gone. Each episode is about a different inspiring figure from history, like this one about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa Parks did the same thing. Check it.
Starting point is 00:33:31 Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records. Because in order to make history, you have to make some noise. I feel like at some point there was a period when you were playing that you realized, and to get those while I'm still here, young, live, and vibrant at that, that's dope. I feel like at some point there was a period when you was playing that you realized exactly what you're doing now. You've got to be a personality. Yeah, I had to. I figured that out year three. Year three.
Starting point is 00:34:17 I was setting myself up in year three for the long haul. And, oh, the NFL hated it back then. They weren't about individuality but i understood what it's going to take to keep me moving once the small window of opportunity with football closed i got to be you got to be a personality you have to be a character in in some sort and back then there was no i mean it was social media but not like it is now yeah so i understood i had to get it while it was hot and i I ain't played in damn near 11, 12 years. Was there pushback from the league with that?
Starting point is 00:34:48 With players being personalities? Yeah, it ain't like that. You know, they call it your diva. A distraction. That's the words that they use. But I ain't going to pay them people no mind. Especially you and T.O. You and T.O.
Starting point is 00:35:05 It seems like they kept it talking on y'all back. They don't like that. They don't like that. You know? If they can't promote it, you got to be a quarterback. I know that y'all are really close. Do you think he'll ever get in the Hall of Fame?
Starting point is 00:35:18 He made it. They made him wait. Yeah, he made it. He made it. Matter of fact, this is the funny thing. Obviously, statistically speaking, he's one of the greatest of all time. That's obviously Jerry Rice.
Starting point is 00:35:28 His numbers are what they are. And then it's T.O. and Moss. I mean, that's my 1A and 1B. And they didn't, his first year of eligibility, they didn't let him in. So he said, well, forget y'all. He held his own ceremony at his college. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that guy. Damn.
Starting point is 00:35:41 That's why you probably don't remember because he was like, forget y'all. Y'all want to play? Damn, I forgot about that. Hall of Fame why you probably don't remember because he was like, forget y'all. Y'all want to play? I forgot about that. Hall of Fame is politics, man. It's politics. It's the game I'd rather not play. And I understood that early in my career. So they pick and choose who to let in.
Starting point is 00:35:56 And I hate that players allow that to weigh on them. Like always knocking on the door wanting to be in so bad because of that need for validation oh i finally made it which is why i donned my own jacket while i was still playing because at that time after that catch i felt i was hall of fame worthy because i crossed a certain amount of certain amount of yards so i'm not waiting on y'all to put me in i'm induct myself i don't want to play politics. I would have been a politician. I wonder with this new media that y'all have, how much pressure do y'all put on the league to do right by players?
Starting point is 00:36:32 I don't think it's no pressure at all because the league can always do what the league wants to do at the end of the day. Always at the end of the day. They're going to always do what they want to do. How much change did you see in the league since you left to now? It seems like the politics have come down a little bit. Yeah, a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:48 The politics have come down and the safety for the players has gone up. But at what cost? Because at the end of the day, it's always about a dollar. It's always about the bottom line. NFL's bottom line will always be money. So changes are happening, but they're finding a way to make sure that they continue to turn a profit at all costs. I know I asked you earlier when we were talking about the game is changing, but I just remember as a kid, and not to say, it was the excitement of a hit. It was the excitement of my wide receiver mushing somebody in the face.
Starting point is 00:37:20 It was that excitement. Does that excitement still happen in the league? Do people still, you know, like to see Lawrencerence taylor crack somebody you know i mean hit somebody he was like you wanted to say right right right but now it's like i feel like these players are too scared and they almost hurting themselves trying not to they're going they're going to hurt themselves because of the rules that the league has now upheld you can't hit anybody if you're bigger faster and stronger, right, and you've been playing the game one way your entire life,
Starting point is 00:37:48 I understand there's a way to adjust, but it's hard to adjust moving at the speeds that they do now, especially if you're a defender. You can't touch anybody at that line. You can't hold. You can't do anything. And now they're making it to the point where you can't hit. So what's going to give?
Starting point is 00:38:04 It's going to be you because you're going to do something wrong you can't hit. So what's going to give? It's going to be you. Because you're going to do something wrong that's not natural. You're going to end up hurting yourself. And until somebody actually hurt themselves, then you'll... It's tough. It's tough. And from the outside looking in, there's really nothing I can say because I'm not playing
Starting point is 00:38:19 anymore. But do you think it would be so much easy for you? Because you were a target, right? You were somebody that they wanted to pop. I wanted, yes. Because my mouth is like, you wouldn't be that target. You would be able to catch even more balls than before. I think that's a certain level of comfort with receivers today because they know they can't be hit.
Starting point is 00:38:35 During my time, the time before mine, during that tenure, you were a little cautious. You understood. You weren't going across the middle. You know you jump up. Yeah, something's up. Something's coming. Today, not so much. That's why you see everybody being pretty with the one hands and doing all this knife
Starting point is 00:38:51 acrobatic stuff as opposed to back then. I mean, you'll do it, but you're a little bit more cautious. I wonder if that's going to make people not want to play fucking defense. I'll just be an offensive player. With the money they passing out absolutely you gonna play
Starting point is 00:39:06 yeah you gonna play the money's crazy these days it's crazy big time do you feel like you missed out
Starting point is 00:39:13 no on that aspect of it no not at all because man what I did I did what I was supposed to do with it ain't spend nothing
Starting point is 00:39:22 which is never spend it yeah yeah yeah so you still got it. I'm still in. I'm rolling. I'm rolling real good now. Rolling good. I'm rolling good.
Starting point is 00:39:30 What I want to ask you, we back on parenting because I wanted to ask you this, but I just thought about it again. You want me to babysit? Yes, you actually can. You actually can. That's why y'all need to hire me.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Now you want me to babysit. Look at the, listen, look at the position I can do here at Breakfast Club boom you deliver i'm here i start as an intern as your babysitter okay so you can bring the baby to work boom i'm here set you ain't gotta worry about nothing i change pampas milk burp feed everything so i can start like that and then work my way up as the baby gets older okay then you give me a position at a chair like I want I want them in these chairs these chairs is nice so I work my
Starting point is 00:40:09 way up the ladder but I just I'm trying to diversify my portfolio and would like to work here how much diversity in the portfolio do you need you need 37 jobs you're 56 you say you got 11 kids I'm choosing to believe him at this point how How active, well, you're very hands-on. How can you still be so active in your kid's life? It's easy. You got 37 jobs. My kids, everybody in college except two. My daughter runs track at University of Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:40:39 My son is at Arizona State. I have an older daughter who's 26. Jakyra, hey, baby, I know you're going to see this. My daughter's at Prairie View A&M. You know? She just... Wait, I don't think I'm allowed to say that. But she's at Prairie View A&M. I was getting ready to talk about something that just happened for her that was really good, but I can't
Starting point is 00:40:54 say it. And little ones. And then I have French Fry. French Fry from a little two-year-old. Baby Kennedy. Cha-Cha, her sister. And I need more. You want more? I need more. Okay. You want more?
Starting point is 00:41:06 Yes. You want more kids? I have time. Okay. I have time. Yeah. I have time because I'm retired. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:11 So I'm trying to diversify my portfolio. That's why you're trying to get more jobs. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was so busy when I was playing, I never got the full experience of what it's like to be a father. Got it. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:41:22 I was always gone. Wow. So, yeah. Yeah. And you stay in shape. So, you know, I don't need you to. Jess, you want me to take it off? Don't get your ass in trouble.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Don't get your ass in trouble. You got married? No, I will be getting married. Let's win. You got to ask him. But that's the thing. I'm going to crash over it. It's coming.
Starting point is 00:41:45 I want to sing. I'm surprised you ain't over the want to sing i'm surprised you ain't over the pastorate no i was ordained but my license you know i'm serious i was ordained but my license expired so i gotta redo my i gotta redo my shit when the last one you ever did what's the last wedding you did um my homeboy bobo at the City. Okay. Yeah, I married him and his wife. He married to a Bonquisha, something Quisha. I don't know if you're telling the truth or lying. No, no, no. I was an ordained minister.
Starting point is 00:42:15 Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what? They canceled me one time, and I remember this, when your wife had her show. Uh-huh. Oh, yeah, they came. It was at your head. Right, it was at your head. Right, it was at my head. And I said,
Starting point is 00:42:26 I was like, I feel like the network is not showing the sisters sell the houses enough. And then they got mad at me and said I was coming from that. I was like, no, I want to see more of it on TV.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Right, right, right. They're just showing the beef and the drama and I hate that they show that with black women. But when they have the white women show, they show all the houses they sold.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Set that shit straight, Ocho Cinco. I know the wife said it straight. And I was mad. I was like, they should houses they sold. Set that shit straight, Ocho Cinco. I know the wife said set it straight. And I was mad. I was like, they should show the sisters. Set them straight, Ocho Cinco. It's hard for me to set them straight. I would need her here. I would need her here to be able to explain her side of the story.
Starting point is 00:42:54 But I understand what you mean. Obviously, they were selling houses. But one thing, if they were just selling houses, right, how many eyes is that going to appease to? I get it even even today just in general you got to have some type of drama type of something yeah yeah i mean just just in general and all that we do so like even the data is we need some type of drama somebody just say something i wonder about that up until recently i don't think y'all had a lot of drama on Nightcap. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Oh, no. And it's not even really drama. Y'all just have dressed in. No, we haven't had any drama. That's because he was on probation. Yeah, I was on papers. Okay. He's on papers now.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Yeah. I mean, I think Shannon and I, we play off each other, and the chemistry is so goddamn good, we don't even have to do that. Yeah, people just like hearing y'all talk. Yeah. Yeah. And then it's to see us in a different space that you never get to see us in and and talk the way we are because it's like the barbershop
Starting point is 00:43:51 locker room and in a way you've never seen us before i think that's what is more appealing to the audience as opposed to it being any drama i think the best thing uh with all of these platforms is showing that athletes are not dumb. Because there was always that stereotype of dumb jock. Especially in football. I think y'all are beyond shattered. Most definitely. One last thing.
Starting point is 00:44:18 The NFL is not testing players, I don't think, for marijuana anymore. And that's what I think I read. And they're saying that a lot of the players were saying that's good because they use that to help heal and help for injuries. You know what? I'm not. That's a good one. That's a good one.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Someone that I've never had smoke weed before. I'm a heavy man. Cut it out. On my mama. Every time you say this, I'll be thinking about. So I got to remind myself he's from Florida and the craziest people in the world come from the Bronx and all of Florida. So think about this. Everybody else that come from Florida and the craziest people in the world come from the Bronx and all of Florida so think about this everybody else that come
Starting point is 00:44:46 from Florida yeah they're flashy too and what am I the complete opposite but you a different type of flash no no no
Starting point is 00:44:53 yeah yeah yeah no but all jokes aside my mama rest in peace who just passed away in 2021 on Hurricane Paula Johnson I've never had weed before oh so you was
Starting point is 00:45:01 I was dead so from the time you walked in you was bullshitting yeah I was bullshitting I kept smoking it you was like I kepted? I was dead. So from the time you walked in, you was bullshit? Yeah, I was bullshit. I kept smoking it? I kept talking about my cigars. Oh, see, I just assumed
Starting point is 00:45:10 it was weed. See, that's my fault. Nah, I don't smoke no weed. I ain't never had no alcohol before. Really? Yeah, never drank. What? Nah. So that's why you looking at 56 like this. Yeah, I don't smoke. So what's your vice? McDonald's? Cigars. Okay. I smoke three a day. Matter of fact, I'm sitting here itching, ready to
Starting point is 00:45:25 hit, there's a cigar bar somewhere here, a private, private, I forgot the name of it. You gotta have a membership, you know what I'm talking about? I don't smoke cigars. Yeah, so I heard about it in New York. I don't frequent here, so I'm curious to check it out today. What's the law when it ain't like no cognac and nothing involved?
Starting point is 00:45:41 I drink cafe con leche or Starbucks. I just don't drink alcohol. So with my cigars, I always pair coffee. I mean, in Miami, obviously, it's easy. Got you. It's easy, but...
Starting point is 00:45:51 So it's like, you don't inhale the smoke, though, right? No, no, it's all about taste. I've never had wine before, but the same way you do with wine tasting is the same thing
Starting point is 00:45:57 you do with cigars. You never had wine before? That would be alcohol, yes. I'm saying that. Yeah. But I'm just saying. Oh, no, I don't play that. I just lost my old girl
Starting point is 00:46:05 my mama to alcohol poisoning and I think as a little kid it always starts when you're young when you don't do something I'm not calling it trauma but just seeing her be someone I wasn't used to seeing when she was consuming alcohol
Starting point is 00:46:21 so I just promised myself I would never never, I'm talking about young. Like, man, woman, who is you? That's still my baby, though. Yeah. I got another homeboy like that. His mom had a really bad drinking problem, so it caused him to never touch alcohol.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Just because he saw how it impacted her. Anyway, but again, with those injuries, the weed, I've heard the stories. I never thought it would get to this point where the NFL is not testing for it. I thought they wouldn't allow it to happen. Not suspending for it, they said. Not suspending for it. Okay. Are they able to monetize on it?
Starting point is 00:46:49 Because, you know, the NFL don't play. They don't find a way to make a dollar. That's a good question. So normally, especially when they allow something to happen, okay, now we find a way we can monetize off allowing them to smoke weed. We'll let it happen. It was always surprising that they allowed betting in professional sports. Like, you know, growing up
Starting point is 00:47:05 you could never bet legally in professional sports. And the fact that, you know, they'll break down an offensive defense and then they'll break down the draft picks pick. And I'm like, this is crazy. Yeah. The players can't bet. They were refused to spend it last year and year before last about making bets at the facility on their phones. In the NFL, they track
Starting point is 00:47:22 everything. They track everything. They know who you hang with in the offseason. They know how much you're spending they know everything literally it's crazy it's crazy wow they know everything you're doing off the field even during the offseason you think that's gonna help or hurt the game well it's always been that way no matter what always even with the legal he always you think you think you're getting away no they know everything you're doing they know the type of people you're hanging with they know your finances they know how much you got they know everything
Starting point is 00:47:49 they know what you're spending the NFL this is the big boys even if it ain't all coming from them they know what you're spending and they have no problem in giving you two three hundred million because they're going to get it all back anyway over the years
Starting point is 00:48:03 if you get where I'm going real quick before you get out of here what is your skin regimen get out of where I'm not going nowhere but what is your skin regimen my skin what do you do to keep your skin so clear
Starting point is 00:48:20 let me tell you for real and your cousin got good skin simple simple fair and white black soap
Starting point is 00:48:27 I get it at the hood at the hood beauty supply store in Miami I'm not sure where it is in other states but fair and white black soap
Starting point is 00:48:34 you know fair and white right no just simple fear and white fair fair and white that's all I use
Starting point is 00:48:42 simple I don't have all them routines yeah that's what I'm like. What is going on? People pay for stuff like that to your skin. Like, to get their skin like that. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:48:52 Hmm? Yeah, I got a dermatologist. Yeah. Like, he has a whole skin. I got fairs. Yeah, yeah. That takes too long. I ain't got time for that.
Starting point is 00:49:00 No, why not? He's a midget. He be here slapping himself with all types of lotions and balms and all that type of stuff. So you ain't never had no chemical pills or nothing? Chemical who? Pills. I don't like grease or anything shiny on my face. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:13 I don't like that. I don't even like massages. That oil, that give me an itch. Come on, man. As much as body trainers you had. Yeah, yeah, but I didn't get massages when I was playing. Really? I didn't even eat right. I ate McDonald's.
Starting point is 00:49:26 No injuries. Never been hurt. Thank God. I can't tell he's 56 when you see his hands. He is not 56. That's him for playing football. That's him for playing football. Oh, I have seen this. Yeah, that's what I do.
Starting point is 00:49:45 Okay, dang. Every day. You just watch morning to night. One time, as soon as I take a shower, boom. I've seen Oh I have seen this Yeah That's what I use Okay Okay thank Every day You just wash Morning and night One time As soon as I take a shower Boom You got your teeth done though

Starting point is 00:49:58 I like yours though Yours don't look like Nah nah nah Big ass stupid ass chopper Yeah I just wanted The perfect smile I'm getting the smile. It was cool because I still suck my fingers.
Starting point is 00:50:07 They shaved it down? Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. Look good, don't? So they were already your teeth. You just got them. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you can tell, yeah.

I want the BBL in the mouth. You don't want your teeth. They're not, but I want the perfect. Like he said, like the perfect. Like want the BBL in the mouth. I want the...
Starting point is 00:50:25 They're not, but I want the... Like he said, they're perfect. There's just something about that. It's not going to fix your lisp. You're still going to have that. You're not taking care of that big-ass tongue. Nothing. Hey, can I talk about my project with ASAP, or should I let that be a surprise? Man, no, because you lying. Nah, me and ASAP got something

Starting point is 00:51:57 frugal and comfortable you should have seen what he had on yesterday he had a curse of all over this sweatsuit it was looking crazy. It came from City Trends. But yeah. It was a black clothing line called Art Meets Chaos. It's nice. It was for children and he was dressed like a big-ass kid. An old-ass kid.
Starting point is 00:52:18 Well, I came to New York with one outfit. I've had this one the past few days. Oh my God. They said y'all cool with them. Oh yeah, that's B-Millions. In Brooklyn? I've had this one in the past few days oh my god we got this hoodie yesterday they said y'all cool with them Saturday oh yeah that's I'll be millions yeah
Starting point is 00:52:27 so we went over there yesterday in Brooklyn yeah alright alright I had to go get some of the other clothes too I had none
Starting point is 00:52:33 I don't have nothing to wear I'm going to the Knicks game I'm going to the Knicks game tonight who they playing you ain't gonna have that on the Falcons the Hawks
Starting point is 00:52:38 I mean the Hawks I know what you mean you not gonna have that on no I'm gonna find an outfit cause it's the Knicks yeah yeah yeah I'm gonna find an outfit Cause it's the Knicks Yeah yeah yeah I'm gonna find out

Starting point is 00:52:53 I get to poppin' I be looking like a million bucks You know what I like? It make you look like You spent some money Uniqlo Uniqlo? Uniqlo

Starting point is 00:53:09 Urban Outfitters but higher end type Urban Outfitters yeah yeah yeah okay yeah and it is very cheap too yes good price point
Starting point is 00:53:17 just gotta go you do Ryan end us with some words man no I would say kind of just everything man like first being here like everything we're doing across gaming music entertainment like talking about upcoming projects
Starting point is 00:53:28 like the next big thing coming up for us we'll be backstage doing like all the gaming and artists interviews at rolling loud california so like we're just trying to continue to find ways to bridge the gap make sure that our people have a seat at the table make sure that they have the information to make their own informed decisions about what they can do with their own individual life one thing we always say like stick to the plan because, like, again, you know, with the reschedule, first off, we're so happy to be able to come through. With this yesterday, we go here, we learn about the relationship that y'all got with the Saturday folks and the whole nine, so we're like, yo, everything kind of works and builds on each other.
Starting point is 00:53:58 It builds on itself. But, like, the main message we wanted to share is, like, again, if parents, aunts, uncles, you have nieces, nep nephews kids that are trying to tap into gaming you're telling them to get off the game we just strongly advise to change the message there's a space because there's actually a real space for it right now i mean within our league alone the last two years hbcu students have earned over two million dollars playing in our league so for us we have kids that are earning six figures just by being a part of this and sometimes these are traditional athletes like we have one kid at florida memorial right now in miami he literally plays on the basketball team
Starting point is 00:54:29 and he's on their esports and gaming team so he's on a scholarship for basketball and he's earning money in this pathway so what's interesting like the hbcu community the gamers are getting more nil than the traditional sports athletes so what games should we be having our kids on then so the games that are mainly in this nba 2k madden call of duty fortnite rocket league mortal combat um mario like super smash all the games that you know as what literally i do a plan coming up about minecraft minecraft is a big one too that's what i was listening like we just did an entire new york city battle of the boroughs we had 125 high schools across all five boroughs going head-to-head in minecraft and the kids were the winner was tasked with whoever built the best new york monument inside of minecraft so it was a whole linkage between the gaming competition stem-based education
Starting point is 00:55:14 and like that's really really it is like what we're doing because like black parents don't realize it like yo your kids are on the game but they could be the ones making the game yeah like a big thing right now in fort is this thing called UEFN, right? So Unreal Engine Fortnite essentially. It's the same model they brought into gaming that exists right now in music. So as a young black person, you can go in and build a custom level in Fortnite. You will get paid on the hourly play time that people are playing on your level. And they will share 40% of the revenue with all of their creators. So like so like yo i guarantee you someone in this room got someone that's playing fortnite
Starting point is 00:55:49 my son absolutely okay well your son and his little friends they could be making llcs they could be little friends yeah they could be they could literally be doing what they're already doing every day right now and converting that into revenue game companies are then hiring these young people to then come build out experiences on their behalf but again like when we look at this the biggest divide of what we've seen is those who grow up with computers versus those who grow up with consoles so when you look at just demographics black and latinx families generally play on xbox playstation nintendo when you look at the other side of the coin is computer-based games the reason we've been excluded from this space the big event that you're talking about those are pcs yeah and so how are you supposed to get in how are high school
Starting point is 00:56:29 kids supposed to get in when the schools themselves can't afford the computer lab to start a gaming team so a lot of the work that we're doing is working with a verizon to then literally get the money to build the lab to give the scholarship so the kids can then play in the league or not even that wi-fi like wi-fi is so damn important in a lot of these areas they don't have strong wi-fi they'd be lagging the kids complaining yes it was crazy it's like and our first major initiative was um back in may 2020 and we literally did a streamathon on twitch we had people like offset we had gz uh michael strahan was a big part of that he raised 118 000 in 20 hours on twitch we took that money and bought devices mobile hotspots and laptops for kids for kids in Atlanta that were basically could not graduate high school because they didn't have a device because of distance learning.
Starting point is 00:57:13 That's crazy. So when we looked at this whole thing of gaming and technology, it's really, really not about the kids just playing the game. But what we realized over the years, we really got to tap into larger voices that are known within media, known within sports, that also have a very strong passion to, like, bring this to the community. And so now we're going about it like a whole different approach. So now, like, for us, that's kind of like what's coming up. That's how we're building this out. And we just say, like, for parents, like, if your kids are interested in something, they're doing it every day. We now live in a passion economy.
Starting point is 00:57:42 You can turn your passions into money. What if your kid sucks? Not saying mine do, but a couple friends. It's not even about the being good or bad, right? It's about, because again, like, I play games every day. I'm not a great gamer, but we run a media-based business that's focused on gaming, right? So again, I turned a passion into a profession.
Starting point is 00:57:58 And what we're saying is like, yo, how I stay in touch with my family, I'm from Columbia, South Carolina. 803! I'm from Columbia, so like, the way I stay in touch with all family, I'm from Columbia, South Carolina. 803! I'm from Columbia. So like the way I stay in touch with all my cousins is through Call of Duty. So like it's a means
Starting point is 00:58:09 of communication for us, but I'm not trying to be a professional Call of Duty gamer. But no, what I can do is use the information that I have, bring that to a bunch of companies that are trying to touch young people, trying to connect with diverse audiences,
Starting point is 00:58:21 trying to build with HBCUs. I'm like, yo, let's just do this through a whole new league. You really diversified your portfolio, which is amazing. That's right. I would hope you would help as well.
Starting point is 00:58:34 All right. I don't mean to be in your personal business. Yes, sir. Who calls the shots here? I have to go actually to a meeting to go see her. She's a woman. What's her name? Her name's Thea. Thea Mitchell. Thea Mitchell. I know you're probably going to see this, honey. I know we've never her. She's a woman. What's her name? Her name's Thea. Thea Mitchell. Thea Mitchell. Thea Mitchell. I know you're probably going to see this, honey. I know we've never met.
Starting point is 00:58:47 She don't like being called honey, so you done fucked up. Yeah, that's right. Fucked up all the way. Miss Thea Mitchell. Mitchum. Mitchum. Mitchum.
Starting point is 00:58:55 Thea Mitchell. I don't know. I just met her. I just met her. If you see this, I have no problem flying to and from Miami to get here. I just want a chance. Just put my foot in the door, and I'll take it from there.
Starting point is 00:59:07 As long as the camera's rolling. We know we got an iHeart station in Miami. I want to come here with y'all. I like the chemistry is there. Yeah. Like just the vibe. I like it. And I'm telling you, I know what I could bring and help us.
Starting point is 00:59:22 Not that y'all need help because y'all is the shit. But just add the cherry on top You don't listen to 1035 in Miami? I don't listen to the radio at all, I'm a gamer I know that's right, I'm a gamer She hates people that don't listen to the radio She never hires somebody that don't listen to the radio That's what makes me so great
Starting point is 00:59:37 Because I don't listen to the radio I still don't listen to the radio, he's lying So yeah Yeah, I don't listen either Ladies and gentlemen, Ryan Johnson, Chad Ocho, Sinko, appreciate y'all for joining us.
Starting point is 00:59:49 Yeah, that's it. She got to go. She got a job. Where you going? To meet Thea Mitchum. Absolutely. Actually, it's a woman's... It's Women's International Day.
