There's too much at stake. One of the biggest trials of the decade. A former Compton police officer takes the stand in the Tupac murder trial. My last year or two of being a police officer, I was employee as on deferral security. And State Farm is issuing $5 billion in dividend payments. It's Thursday, August 20th. This is front page, and here are the day's biggest stories. Stay with me. Carmelo Anthony scored a legal victory Wednesday. The judge who presided over his murder trial has now been removed from his post-trial proceedings. That means Judge John Roach will not decide, whether Carmelo Anthony gets a new trial. A senior Texas judge made that decision after Carmelo Anthony's lawyers, argued Roach could no longer be considered neutral.

And that's a big part of their argument centered on what Roach did after the trial. He gave a television interview where he agreed with the jury's verdict. Did the jury get it right? Yeah, they did. You know, why? Because they were picked based upon the law. They listened to the facts. that happened here in this very courtroom, and they got a verdict. I sleep well at night.

Carmelo's attorneys argue that once Roach publicly weighed in on the verdict, he should not be able to decide whether that same verdict should stand. Roach had refused voluntarily to step aside, so another judge was brought in to remove him from the case. Carmelo was in court wearing a green prison jumpsuit. His parents were there. Austin Metcalf's parents were also. in the courtroom. When the decision came down, Carmelo's supporter celebrated inside the courthouse and outside the building. But this is only the first fight. Today comes the bigger one. A new judge will hear Carmel's motion for a new trial, and one of the biggest issues involves what his attorneys call a gentleman agreement. The dispute regarding the agreement

did impact the outcome of the trial. And what that means is Carmelo's current attorney, say prosecutors and his original defense team had an understanding. about certain character evidence, neither side would bring up in trial. But they say prosecutors later backed away from that understanding. The defense argues that changed Carmelo's entire strategy, including his decision not to testify in his own defense. Now they want a new judge to decide whether that was serious enough to give Carmelo a new trial. Carmelo was convicted of murder in June for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalfe during a Friscoe track meet in April of 2025. He was sent.

sentenced to 35 years in prison. That conviction and sentence still stand. And today, we'll find out whether Carmelo gets another shot at challenging how he got there. We'll stay on this. And now to Las Vegas, where a former Compton police officer who went on to run security for death row records has taken the stand in the Tupac Shakur murder case. Reggie White Jr. was working with death row records when Tupac was signed to the label. And his testimony matters because the man on trial, Duane Keefe DeV Davis has publicly accused Wright of being connected to Tupac's murder. Prosecutors asked Wright directly whether he had anything to do with the killing. He said no.

Wright also gave jurors a pretty unflattering description of Kipi D. According to reporters in the courtroom, Wright described Davis as a crackhead before he became a drug dealer. Jurors also heard new details about Tupac's final moments. A retired Los Angeles police officer testified that he pulled. over Tupac and Shugnight shortly before the shooting because their car was missing a rear license plate. He let them go with a warning. Minutes later, Tupac was shot. That same officer rode with Tupac in the ambulance and testified that these were Tupac's final words.

Yes, I rode to the hospital and the ambulance with him. He was still talking and I was trying to convince him to tell me the name of whoever's assailants were. He responded, no, we'll take care of it. Something like. The medical examiner also walked jurors through Tupac's injuries, including a bullet that traveled through his lung and another that entered his abdomen. Tupac died six days later. He was 25 years old.

Keefe D. is now 63 years old and if convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. And lastly, State Farm Auto Customers, you may have money coming back. State Farm has began issuing payments from a $5 billion dividend, the large. in the company's history in more than 100 years. So what exactly is a dividend? Well, State Farm brought in more money than it needed to cover claims and expenses. And because State Farm is owned by its policyholders, it's returning some of that money to customers. The average payout is about $100 per vehicle, although your amount may vary depending on where you live and how much you paid for auto insurance. So who qualifies? Well, you need to have an active State Farm personal auto policy at

some point in 2025. And State Farm says the dividend covers more than 49 million vehicles. And if you qualify, you'll be notified by email or letter. And the payments, they're already going out. So if you had State Farm Insurance last year, keep your eye on your mailbox. You may have money coming back. That's your front page. I'm Mimi Brown.
