Welcome home, real people, real celebrities, real talk. Join the Breakfast Club. Black it's dj mv angela yee shalameen the guy we are the breakfast club special guest
with us in the building this morning miss justine sky hey what's up good morning brooklyn zone
brooklyn zone yeah where what does justine do what do you you do, Justine? She's a rapper. Nah, I'm a singer.
You're a singer?
I'm a singer, yeah.
I sing R&B.
Okay.
He knew that.
He knew that.
I didn't, actually.
Good question, Charlamagne.
Well, I've seen Justine Skye perform a few times,
and I know that you're very up and coming,
and you really got popular off your Tumblr page.
A lot of people follow you on Tumblr.
How many Tumblr followers you got?
I have like 100,000.
Okay, okay.
I mean, I've been on Tumblr since I was like 16, so.
And now you're a whopping. 17 and a half.
No, I'll be 20.
Really?
This summer.
You don't look 20.
She said this summer.
Yeah, this summer.
So you're 19?
Yeah.
Okay.
She can't wait to be 20.
So you're old enough for Tiger.
I actually don't.
Tiger?
You better stop because you know she's friends with Kylie.
Really?
Yeah.
I didn't know that. I never see her pose with black people She just ignored you. She went right back to it. Go ahead. Show it on the Tumblr. Go ahead. I'm going to go back to it, too.
Go ahead.
Show it on the Tumblr.
Well, like, it was just, like, a group of people.
I like to surround myself with, like, positive and, like, ambitious people.
So I found, like, a group of friends on Tumblr because I was kind of lame.
So I found some friends on there.
And then, like, we just, like, evolved together.
We helped each other out.
We promoted each other.
I started doing music. I made, like, videos on YouTube.
And, like, Justine Skye came about. How did you end up laying you're not laying what i was a
lot of girls think they're laying when they're not having sex when they're not drinking when
they're not smoking when they're doing everything they're supposed to be doing
i mean like in school i was like in the group of cool girls but my mom never let me do anything so
i was like i always had to go home what did did you want to do? I wanted to go to the parties.
They had these day raves in Brooklyn, and I was never allowed to go.
Day raves?
Yeah, it was in Flatbush or something like that.
I don't know.
How come you never snuck out like most kids do?
Because my house is really small.
That's not possible.
And I have two dogs, so it was never going to happen.
They would balk when you tried to sneak back in the window.
But you did end up getting homeschooled after a while.
You left high school.
Yeah, high school was pretty strange.
And I started to get more into my music career.
So my mom took me out of school and started to get me homeschooled
because I'd be in the studio and it'd be like in there really late.
Is it true that girls who were sheltered when they were in school,
when they get out, they pop that for a goon more than the average person?
I don't know about other girls but for me for me um i mean like i'm pretty secure with myself and i like my mom
taught me to be very confident and i learned that like i mean i had a boyfriend for three years like
since i was like 15 so that was like my main priority and like my career so you didn't go
buck wild once you finally got out there?
No, I didn't.
I mean, my mom's pretty strict too.
Why did you guys break up after three years?
Was it because of your music career?
We just grew apart.
Sometimes when I was doing music and I was getting more and more popular.
He was the cool guy for so long.
And then I was following in his shadow.
And then I started to become the cool guy, I guess. And then he started to become lame. Was he a musician? Yeah, because he probably was a thug. guy for so long and then like i was like while following in his shadow and then like i started
to become the cool guy i guess and then he started to become lame what's he probably was a thug and
then once he wasn't a thug he wasn't a thug okay what did he do was he a musician or something
okay so he helped you was an internet dude at one no no no he was like a popular like you know
like the popular like people like on the internet like oh popular, like, people, like, on the internet. Like, oh, my God. Like DC Young Fly?
I don't know who that is.
Oh.
Not that popular.
Bad example.
Was your mom a drag in the music?
What in the music?
My mom, she's an entertainment attorney.
Oh, she's an attorney.
So I grew up, like, in the music industry. Yeah.
Wait, why she push me?
So how did you end up getting signed to Atlantic?
Nah.
How did that end up happening?
Well, I was actually, like, applying to college college and i didn't get into the college i
wanted to get into what college nyu the clive davis program oh yeah but bmcc
what nah so i was like applying to college and then i had put out a um a mixtape when i was like
16 it was called sky high and then i was releasing some more original music and like in the beginning
when i was like 14 i went to when I was, like, 14,
I went to all the labels,
and, like, I showcased for them,
did the whole thing,
like, L.A. Reid, Leo Cohen, Craig Calman,
which is funny because now I'm signed to Atlantic.
But they were all like,
no, like, she's not ready.
And then I just, like, followed my own path,
like, did, I was in the studio writing my own music.
Like, I was more involved with it,
and then that's when they started to come for me.
So how did the Brooklyn girl hook up with Kylie and Kendall? West Coast based well I started recording out there more because that's
like where a lot of like producers and songwriters are and in the beginning I didn't know anyone and
I started to make friends out there like through the internet and Kylie wanted your lips so she
probably was drawn to you they were just they had mutual friends and um we just like hung out I was
actually like pretty nervous because I was just like, why am I?
Why do they want to hang out with me?
I'm lame.
I'm nobody.
Stop saying you're lame.
Yeah, stop putting that out there.
I mean, now I know I'm not lame, but that was my mentality back then.
I'm just like, I'm not famous or rich or nothing like that.
Why would you feel that way, though?
That don't mean you're...
Because I'm from Brooklyn, and that's how everybody...
Brooklyn is the coolest city in the world.
Yeah, you kidding?
We really are, but I was also very,
like, insecure.
Wow.
Like, I was confident,
but insecure.
Ain't nobody ever
scripted you naked
and told you to look
in the mirror.
No, I wasn't,
but I just felt like
I don't really know much
about L.A.
or, like, the L.A. lifestyle,
so, like, why would they
want to hang out with me
like that?
But I guess I was just,
I don't know.
So are y'all really cool?
Like, are you, like,
cool, cool?
Like, been sitting around
the house seeing Bruce
walk by in a dress
before he came out
as Caitlyn cool?
We're not that. I mean, me and Kylie are really cool, cool? Like, been sitting around the house seeing Bruce walk by in a dress before he came out as Caitlyn, cool? We're not that.
I mean, me and Kylie are really cool,
but me and Kendall are closer.
Gotcha.
It's like we're closer in the age, so.
Your friends are Willow Smith also.
Yeah.
Now you talking.
What?
Why?
Because I'm a Pinky Smith Winfrey nose card.
Well, I mean, like, me and Willow,
that was like, she was one of my first, like,
I guess, famous friends, like, out there
because she was really cool, one of my friends.
And then she was just really dope.
I didn't know.
I actually didn't know she was that young.
Right.
But she, like, doesn't act like that.
How old is Willow?
I think she's, like, 13, 14.
Really?
She that young?
You're too old to be hanging out with Willow now.
Dude, she doesn't act like her age.
She's, like, really, like, her mind is very, like, advanced.
Like a young Drew Barrymore Back in the day
So does Kylie ask you tips
Like yo how do you get your lips like that
You know what I'm saying
Things like that nature
How are your cheekbones so full
This guy
You're so stupid
Now you also
You're doing good
You're doing good
Hold on you did do a song
With Tiger as well
Collide
Yeah
That was my first single
How old were you when you did that
That was last year
Calm down So you was 18 No I was I was like I you did that? That was last year Calm down
So you was 18?
No I was
I was like
I think I recorded
Yeah I was 18
You was 18?
Okay
And DJ Mustard did that
I heard you're gonna be working
With DJ Mustard more in the future
Yeah he's like a big brother to me
We're actually working on a
A big brother
Yo you are out of pocket
He's a big old brother
Stay focused
Stay focused
Don't let me get you off your deems
Stay focused
Nah but me and Mustard
We're working on some Really really great music I'm so excited about off your D's, they focused. Nah, but me and Mustard, we're working on some really, really great music.
I'm so excited about it.
It's like, we're gonna do a mixtape.
We just started working in the studio.
We did like a week,
and we're gonna get back in to finish it out.
You don't think mixtapes are a waste of music
for an R&B artist?
It's not like you're a rapper.
But you guys are EP out right now.
No, I don't think it's a waste of music.
I mean, people are always like,
why don't you put out an album?
Why don't you put out an album?
But see, I'm sitting here, and you don't even know who I put out an album? Why don't you put out an album? But like, see, I'm sitting here and like,
you don't even know who I am yet.
So why would I want to put out an album
and not sell anything
and just like be a flop?
Like,
like,
I like what Nicki Minaj did.
Like,
she did features.
She like really built it up.
And then like when her album dropped,
it was so like highly anticipated
that like she sold.
Gotcha.
Can we hear you sing this one?
But you're aware,
you're aware people don't know you yet though.
Absolutely.
Of course.
You're on your own cousin.
Can we hear you sing this morning?
Sure.
Go ahead.
All right, so this is my new single.
Boy, this can make or break you.
I'm just going to sit back and see what you're up to.
I'm just going to sit back.
No pressure.
Go ahead.
All right, this is my new single.
I'm yours.
I don't mean to show it all on my face, babe. And I don't mean to wear it all on my face, babe
And I don't mean to wear it all on my sleeve
But when we messed around
Suddenly my heart's what I found
And now I wanna call you my baby
I wanna be your best friend, yeah.
It's so crazy amazing.
And you know it.
You know I'm feeling you.
And you like it.
You like it because you know I'm yours.
There you go.
A little pitchy.
Yeah.
No, I'm not even going to front.
It was a little pitchy.
It was a little early. Shut up. You don't know it. A little pitchy. Yeah. That one's not pitchy though. It's a little pitchy. Nah, I'm not even gonna front it. It was a little pitchy.
It's a little early.
It's a little pitchy.
Shut up.
He don't know it.
It's a little pitchy.
It's a little early, but it's all right.
Was that song about Travis Scott?
No, it was not.
Oh, yeah, they said... Somebody told me that you used to have sex with Travis Scott.
No, it said date Travis Scott.
Oh, yeah, okay.
Was that your little boo thing?
Because that was a rumor.
I mean, we're cool.
He's a dope artist, and I was really interested in his music from before, and then we met, and we hung out. We were cool rumor. I mean, we're cool. He's a dope artist and I was like, I was really interested
in his music from before
and then we met
and we hung out.
We were cool,
but I mean,
we're just friends.
Travis going places.
He is.
So y'all didn't go on
no dates or anything.
There was no interest
in that way.
No, we just hung out.
We just hung out.
We were really cool.
And we got into the studio.
We did some music.
Hopefully,
like you guys will get that.
Who knows?
Is it hard for you though?
Like being young, attractive, guys always trying to come on to you in the studio oh does it happen a lot it
actually doesn't happen a lot it happens somewhat though it happens but um and i'm not even gonna
front like i was like there was a point in my life where i was like oh my god i need a boyfriend like
after i was in that relationship for so long but then i kind of just like got over it because i
wanted to be more focused on myself and like establish myself as an artist before like i
don't i know that people's like reputations gets like they're very important and like they get
tainted very fast so i'm not trying to be that girl in the music industry especially like an r&b
girl like i know that guys are like always out to get them so and my mom dreams
does your mom manage you or how involved is she in your she co-manages me um i'm also managed by are always out to get them. And my mom. Dreams of an R&B chick.
Does your mom manage you?
How involved is she in your career? She co-manages me.
I'm also managed by Jeff Robinson and BK.
Are the days of the industry couch over?
Those days are over, right?
They don't do that no more, right?
No, I don't think so.
What is that?
Like when they need proposition girls
to have sex with them in town,
you can be a big star.
Just give up this.
Oh, nah.
Nobody approached me with that
unless you're not going down.
Did you used to fight a lot
in high school?
Um,
no,
I didn't used to fight a lot.
I'm not a fighter,
but I'm not like,
I'm not.
No,
I'm not.
There you go,
Justin.
You're a little too relaxed now.
Get focused,
get back focused.
Well,
make sure you mention
the new EP that's out now
so we know what you're here for.
Yeah,
Emotionally Unavailable

Whoa,

like it doesn't matter what age you are at some point in your life you feel like you're emotionally
unavailable gotcha are you heartbroken already at such a young age i was i was after that
relationship and so that's where this EP came about.
What's your astrological sign? Virgo.
Virgo. Okay. What's your birthday?
August 24th.
She's gonna be 20. Envy's a Virgo too.
Virgos rock, man. Beyonce's a Virgo.
Michael Jackson's a Virgo. Male Virgos are very sensitive.
