Ever dreamt about starting your own?
I planted the flag. This is mine. I own this.
It's surprisingly easy.
55 gallons of water, 500 pounds of concrete.
Or maybe not.
No country willingly gives up their territory.
Oh my God.
What is that?
Bullets.

There in that place, I don't know.
Kingston, Jamaica, that's it.
Absolutely.
That's it.
Chalamet's going to have some issues this morning.
I'm going to listen.
I'm going to try my best to understand.
I love the Jamaican accent.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
You got to do that.
You are going to be
performing in Brooklyn, though.
Yeah, definitely.
King's Theater tonight.
That is kind of like
being in Jamaica in some ways.
Yeah, because I know
how Brooklyn is.
It's like Jamaica.
Very Caribbean.
I'll be in Brooklyn.
Yeah, man.
Definitely.
That's a lot of energy
surrounding you right now, man.
It's always good energy, but then it's, you know,
you're getting some bad negative things said in the press.
Yeah, well, they don't know it going on.
Them saying the publicity, you know.
Any publicity is good publicity.
Any publicity is good publicity.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, I saw a petition.
Don't know people all this talk about things
because they don't know we're from nothing to something.
You get me?
Absolutely.
I saw a petition that said they're trying to get you deported oh I think barely anybody signed
that that's garbage yeah don't know me of more than a million funds in America like millions
of fun so which are somebody I try get a petition from over they get deported on my
fans I might get up with a petition from over Staying in the US Yeah and I read that It would have been more easier
Don't it
Yeah and listen
And if anybody
You've probably done more collaborations
With artists in the United States
Than any other reggae artist
Yeah definitely
Because you are we the best
Yeah
So automatically
There's you know
Ace Hood
DJ Khaled
I know you did
The song with Nicki Minaj
Yeah definitely
I know I got this new
Single out now
Me and Future
Ain't going but broke Oh I heard there was a remix to that too With The song with Nicki Minaj. Yeah, definitely. I know I got this new single out now, Me and Future.
Ain't Going Back Broke.
Oh, I heard there was a remix to that too with Vibes.
Yeah, with Vibes. Okay, okay.
You know, we just sent it to our master for Joppet.
Y'all had beef at one point though, right?
Yeah, definitely.
You don't know.
Over the years, we go at it hard.
You don't know.
But you don't know we're street.
So, you know know I really recognize
really get me
so
after this time
they are
you know
there must be a calm
so you don't know
at times
you know
we have to try
and set things together
so that
the youths
them that
you know
other way
I know
Seboy
you know
we're music legendary
and we're lifestyle legendary
and everything
you know
we still have to teach them
you know
something good
make them know
Seboy
you know
at one point we can have unity the same way.
And it must not have been a real issue if y'all could come back together.
No, because we used to party together back in the days,
like 12, 13, 14 years ago.
You don't know when.
It's all about the alliance.
You don't know.
It's all about the gully and the gauze.
You get me?
Now, let me ask you this.
The verse from Vibes Cartel.
Did he do that on his phone?
I don't know.
Or is it something that he had?
No, well, you know, we just linked with TJ
and we just made the magic happen.
Because I know he's been recording stuff.
I don't know a certain thing.
I'm not really saying it.
Oh, okay.
We linked with TJ and TJ always have a way
for making the magic happen.
I don't know.
TJ has a lot of things put
down so what is tj tj that's um one of the one of jamaica big producer that's the guy who i'm
produced i'm so special oh okay hell yeah all right and um no games and songs like that gotcha
honestly them no and i said them no one you know them kind of song got you last time i was in
jamaica um i was talking to my driver when I was leaving the airport.
And I was like, okay, so who you like better, Mavado or Viles Cartel?
And he was like, it's just so divided here.
That was a couple years ago.
So, you know, that's when it was really divided.
Oh, that was when we, yeah, that's when we got it.
Mm-hmm.
You guys are really going at it.
That's when you know you're powerful, though.
You can divide a whole place.
Yeah, man. Like, we know you're powerful, though. You can divide a whole place. Yeah, man.
Like, we divide Jamaica, Africa, Ireland, you know, name it.
Anywhere the dance and music play.
You know, at that point, you know, we divide it, split it.
You know what I mean?
It's either you ask a girl or you ask a guy.
It's just us, you know?
Right.
So, you don't know.
And then even with Bounty Killer, it had to be difficult
because I know y'all both came up under Bounty Killer.
Yeah, we came up with the same statement.
And then I guess...
He been going at you.
Yeah.
Yeah, well, I don't know.
I say it going on.
As we say, don't know in life.
You never really know the ones who turn on your heart.
You never know what is going to happen tomorrow.
Right.
You know what I mean?
The greatest thing in life and, you know, keep it blazing.
Keep on being successful.
You get me?
Right.
That's what Golly God is all about.
You think you guys can come back together, though?
Because that is somebody you consider.
Well, as I said, you never know what tomorrow may bring.
Mm-hmm.
You know what I mean? Anything can happen tomorrow you know all people have a sense saying well
what i run are ready to run back now how's man how's married life for you that was a surprise
for a lot of people i don't know what to say go you don't know how over the years you know
you know when we start to you know becomes a man don't know you have to set yourself that way and
don't know you can't do the bug a wild thing cause you know i got kids you know, becomes a man. Don't know, you have to set yourself that way there and don't know you can't deal with a bag of wild thing cause, you know, I got
kids, you know. Right. Big kids, you know.
And you have two kids every morning. Welcome to the club, man.
Yeah, I got two kids in the US and I got
two of my first two kids in Jamaica.
Oh yeah, Charlemagne actually
just recently got married as well. Welcome to the club,
bro. Yeah.
Everything you just said. Yeah, I mean,
I agree with you yeah for real
cause it's not like
we're
you know
we're teens again
you know what I mean
big people
you don't know
my first
kid
she's 14
going 15 now
you know
my first son
13 this week
you know what I mean
so
you don't know
you have to
you know
have your head
put in your body
you have to think you know for the youth and future you know have your head put in your body you have to think
you know for the youth
and future
you know what I mean
so that's what
Gulligard is all about
you know from nothing
to something
so we start out
from nothing
and now
you know
we have too much
to lose
every time you say
you don't know
I'm sitting here
like I really don't know
because I don't understand
but Angela is from Brooklyn
so I guess you understand
you're out here
I can understand
little things yeah anything when I understand it acts man that Brooklyn, so I guess you understand. I can understand little things.
Yeah.
Anything I don't understand,
I ask, man.
That's why we're here.
You know what I mean?
Simple.
What's going on with Shatters, too?
Because they've been talking about that movie so long.
Yeah, but I think they're trying to get the locations
for the longest while now.
They're trying to film it in probably two
other islands from Jamaica.
Oh, not Miami.
Yeah, you don't know me.
I'm on straight Jamaica still, you know?
But it's just the work, so.
But that's how it is.
When they forget them things together,
I'm going to be there.
Is it hard for you to be in Jamaica?
Because I know at a certain point
you felt like the cops
were really targeting you.
Yeah, well, I haven't been to Jamaica over a year now.
You staying away on purpose?
Yeah, well, I don't know.
Certain things, you know,
you don't need to fix and put together.
So you don't know.
We'll just go and work on it until things good.
But until then, I don't want
us be it it's fun to party it's fun to party it's never stop you get me no
big songs oh so absolutely how is it working with Cali because it seemed like it seems like you don't need, I mean, I ain't no disrespect to Khaled.
You're good.
But it seems like you don't need Khaled.
You're my bottle.
You know what I'm saying?
Well, I mean, I don't know.
Golly God, he's already legendary.
I'm already a billboard artist over the years.
But unity is the key.
You know what I mean?
Gotcha.
And you don't know me and Khaled been friends for years.
Okay.
You know what I mean?
So, even the life status and everything you know
you know doesn't really have anything to do with the friendship there you know got you and the
respect that we always keep for friends over the years you know so you know that's how we even we
even said we we the best goalie side i don't know you know because you know it's all about that
unity the car you know no um dj'm DJ Khaled from in the 90s,
like probably 97, 98.
You know, so we're at about over 17 years now.
So you don't know.
You and Drake also have a great relationship.
I know he recorded in Jamaica.
Yeah, yeah, in three jams.
No, I wasn't really there, you know,
because you don't know when I come to Jamaica,
you don't know Golly God.
You bring too much attention.
Up in the sky, yeah, really.
I have too much, yeah, so, you know,
but whenever I tell him Jesus is in Jamaica,
you don't know him, Gulligard, you know,
will pass you, give him an hour or two, you know,
link up and we'll move again.
You don't know where the city will take you, right?
Now, who do you got to call if you're an artist
and you want to go to Jamaica and record?
I'm sure you can't just go there. Like, I'm sure... Like, who, yeah, who? I mean, you can go... I mean, you're an artist and you want to go to Jamaica and record I'm sure you can't just go there
I mean you can go
I mean you could go there if you want
you may not leave
you know what I mean
I mean you don't know Jamaica
Jamaica is a nice country
you don't know Jamaica people love
entertainers
R&B rap artists hip hop artists you know entertainers you know really are r&b rap um artists hip-hop artists you know i mean um
dance artists it doesn't matter i mean it's just all about whenever time you go jamaica just know
say yeah if you have the respect there you know i mean because it's all about the street you know
in a jamaica we deal with the street right you know i mean so that's why you're fine when most
artists are most rappers i'm coming to jamaica them try for link with the powerful ones you know i mean so that's why you're fine when most artists are most rappers i'm coming to
jamaica them try for link with the powerful ones you know the boss them on the street you know and
you know that's how golly god is coming in place right you know i mean because i'm a street
orientated person you know you know i mean stick to the street you know i mean i think jamaica is
a beautiful place every time we go there they say don't leave the resort. Yeah, man.
Because I'm going to spend all of the money on the resort.
So why would I tell them to leave?
That's the result.
But I think no matter where you go.
Forgot on the street, I'm going to the ghetto.
Right.
You know what I mean?
I met the people.
Let me see how I spend because I'm in the U.S.
I know some guys that did that.
They was actually Olympic track runners.
And they got robbed.
Where?
Don't give me the the line I don't know
I don't know the exact
I say no matter where you go
you gotta be with the right people
I get them
take all their money
and they don't want it
you see what I'm saying
them Jamaicans
get all the wine
for their money
take all their money
out of their pocket
they don't want
to give their money
and they don't even
pay their friend they don't want to give their money a gear money. I don't even pay the RFR.
It's a gear money.
I know.
Shalami don't know what's going on.
It sounds amazing though.
I love it.
But I don't know what's going on.
Was there ever an issue in Jamaica with people thinking that maybe you working with all these
other artists in the United States was like selling out?
Yeah.
People used to, you don't know people.
Oh, it's there already.
You have people that think different.
You know what I mean?
Everyone to their own opinion.
You know what I mean?
But you as an artist, you don't know, you know?
Once you know the goal, you know what I mean?
You're aiming for, you're working for.
Like even Golly God now, I mean,
who doesn't want to be in my father's shoes right now
as a dancer or artist
and it's not easy
because you know what I mean
I built this for like 10 years now
you know what I mean
so even when I left Jamaica a couple of years ago
you know what I mean
and come here in the US
and start putting all of that work and everything
you know most people are like
yo we need him to come back to Jamaica
right and right
but what God will do is you know we just like yeah we need him to come back to jamaica right but what godly god do is you
know we just keep that we just keep the fire blazing and you know continue to make you know
those big number one songs you know i mean i'm talking about you know number ones from in the
uk back to canada back to japan you know all those places enough years so and and and you know
linking up with all of these hip-hop rappers and and and and
also ever doing the music you know i mean it's just a great thing because that's how our music
get there now and even get more bigger out there and i mean by by by by by by extending it and i
mean with with with other genre of music music and artists and all of that.
Why is it easy for a dance hall artist to get along with artists like here from America,
but it's hard for y'all to get along with each other sometimes?
Well, I don't know.
I don't know.
Y'all hear about crabbing the barrel?
Absolutely.
Yes.
I understood you just now.
Yes.
So sometimes I just about a crab in a barrel thing.
But as we say, the whole of us come from poor communities, poor families.
We wake up in places where people are every day and cuss every day.
You don't know it, but when a man starts making a dollar,
if you don't have your head for your body, you're straight.
From the great point of being successful.
You know what I mean?
So that's how most people or most artists can get along.
You know what I mean?
But we as youth, over the years, as I said, over 10 years now,
Golly God has been keeping it up there and and making all this great music for the fans. After 10 years, if somebody doesn't really put in that much work as a Gully God, then
why even have an argument with that person? Then middle us feel as if that person not really in in
in my league but you don't know it's all about dance and music and we're all one human being
you know i mean we're all from jamaica so so so golly god if i don't have a problem with the artist
you know i mean we just don't have a problem with him right now how did you end up working with Jay-Z? Oh, well, you don't know.
Me, Gulligard, when I sing this, the Hande Rock song.
Which one?
You know what I mean?
Hande Rock.
I'm Hande Rock.
I'm Hande Rock.
You know, that was such a huge song and such a huge success for Gulligard.
You know, I didn't even know when Jay-Z went on the song.
You know, we just wake up.
Oh, it wasn't like he hit you and then you was like, yo.
No, he hit me after he did it.
You know what I mean?
And then after, the boss go up on the song, you know, him gossip about me.
You know, him try to fight, you know.
Not try, him fight Gulligard because I wasn't really hard to fight.
Right.
You know what I mean?
And, you know, him link up and, you know,
him and say, yo, you know, I respect you, man.
And, you know, you got great talent and everything, you know.
I don't know me.
Golly God, you know, Ali has been a great admirer of Jay-Z music
and, you know, his whole persona and everything, you know,
how he dealt with his business and everything.
You know what I mean? So, you know, it was just a great, one of the greatest moments for me, you know, how he dealt with his business and everything. You know what I mean?
So, you know, it was just a great, one of the greatest moments for me in my music career.
You know what I mean?
To know that, you know, Jay-Z, because over the years of growing up,
listening to Tupac, Biggie, you know what I mean?
Jay-Z and, you know, Dr. G and those people.
Dr. Dre.
Yeah, you know what I mean?
So, you know, so for those people to come and reach out to me
and go on my music is one of the greatest.
And now you're trying to find a shanty?
Did that work out?
You know, I'm an artist.
You're trying to smash.
What happened?
What do they say in Jamaica?
What do they say in Jamaica when they want to smash? I don't know. I still don't know. What did they say in Jamaica when they wanted to smash?
What did they say?
I don't know.
We say all kinds of things, you know.
We say we want to dug her.
Dug her out?
We want to thump her up.
Dug her?
We want all kinds of something.
All thump her up?
Thump, thump, thump her up.
They want to come and thump her up.
Thump her out.
Make sure you fly in the disc.
Please don't start using this, Charlamagne. It don't sound right. Thump her out. Thump her out. Make sure you fly into the sky. Please don't start using this, Charlene.
It don't sound right.
I don't want to tump her out.
I don't want to tump her out.
So you want to do a song?
Yeah, well, definitely.
You know, I'm always a fan of Ashanti.
Just like even Mariah Carey, you know, and them girls from back in the days.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know what I mean?
Coming up before we even become a star, you know?
We'll listen to them and we'll say,
yo, she's pretty.
Yo, her voice is pretty, you know?
So, but I met her a couple of times.
Mm-hmm.
You know what I mean?
So, I guess that will work out in time.
Yeah, so is she down?
I'm sure she is.
Well, I didn't really try that hard to reach out to her.
Oh, okay.
You just put it on yeah whenever time i
see her and think charlie is showing my father that i love and thinking i mean so you know she's
a beautiful girl and a beautiful person shanti mavada want to work with you definitely make it
happen now being a ladies man that was a hard now that you're married do things change do women
treat you different not change you don't know the ladies. I'm always love me.
You feel like the girls want to give you more now.
No, the girls, I'm always love me because, you know,
most girls look at it and say that, you know,
sorry, she never get the chance, you know,
for being that special person.
To get tumped out.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Forget that squeeze there.
That squeeze there.
Yeah.
Oh, God. Now, what happened
in Philippe Childs, man?
We saw a story on TMZ
that he was being racist
towards you or something?
Yeah, some little,
it was just disrespectful.
You know what I mean?
Because, you know,
I just figured,
I just figured more than less,
you know, because, you know,
me and my brother would go in there and
they would say to the rest of you
we don't know
what they think
at the time there wasn't anybody else in the restaurant
you know what I mean
so I don't know if they would say
why don't you open the restaurant
the two of them come in first
you know what I mean
but you know them just being first. You know what I mean? Right.
But, you know,
them just being disrespectful and we just talk about it.
You don't know.
And, you know,
we didn't even tell them
I'm in panic too much
because it's not like
we're trying to give them
a free promotion or something.
Right.
You know what I mean?
They did apologize though.
Yeah, they apologized.
Did they give you your food free?
No, they didn't want it.
No, they didn't apologize then.
No, we didn't.
Yeah, we didn't even want something free
Because as we say, we as Jamaicans
We're very
Boasty
And we're proud of ourselves
So you notice
Whenever Jamaicans
At a place where all you stand out
You have to know
Jamaicans are in our building.
You know what I mean?
So, what do you mean?
Charlamagne, shut up.
What do you mean?
You know what I mean?
So, whenever time Jamaicans are in our building,
you have to know.
So, you know, we always keep it proud
and we always keep that light shining
for our country and all of that.
I'm going to pay for my food.
Now, unlike Charlemagne, who will not pay for his food.
I always pay for my food with the extra because I always have to leave a tip and things like that.
You know what I mean?
Back in the days, we never had cash like those that we could go in somewhere and leave a tip.
You know what I mean?
Welcome, take your tip and everything.
But now, you know what I mean?
We don't get that cash there for our own. You know what I mean? We'll come take your tip and everything. But no. You know what I mean? We don't make that cash there for our own.
You know what I mean?
We just go in our place and, you know, we'll order whatever we want.
And we'll pay and we'll leave the tip and thing on our head out back.
You know what I mean?
Now, what's up with your record label?
You still have artists on?
Huh?
Your record.
I know you had your own label.
Yeah, I got my artists, my dance hall artists.
In Jamaica, like Three Star, Three Scraps, Trace Cross, and a couple more of them.
But because, as I said, I'm just working on this situation.
And as soon as everything's great and up,
then you're going to hear more about my artists.
I mean, they're already big in Jamaica and in the islands.
You know what I mean?
So you have a visa issue right now?
No, I don't have a visa issue.
Oh, okay.
That was another rumor that was out there.
I'm living in the U.S., so I couldn't have a visa issue.
Okay, so they know.
You know what I mean?
I might just have a little traveling issue at times, but it's all right.
It's going to work out.
You don't want to even not be able to come back.
What do you think, being from Jamaica, when you see all the police brutality that goes on in America,
how they just gun down and blackmail?
Well, I mean, to me, you people probably just going through those situations.
We've been going through that for years.
You know what I mean?
I got more than 20, 30 friends that died by the hands of the police,
just like that.
Wow.
You know what I mean?
And that's just my friends.
So just think of what I'm trying to say to you
you know i mean it's it's just the same situation all over you know when a man they behind a trigger
you know i mean if him not that respect or that love for people then you know i mean why you
think going to happen gonna be bloodshed it always happen over and over and over again. The next little girl, the next little boy,
grew up without a parent.
When they ask him, what's up?
He tell her, police killed my father.
You know what I mean?

Ever dreamt about starting your own?
I planted the flag.

It's surprisingly easy.

No country willingly gives up their territory.

Hey, y'all.
Nimany here.
I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families
called Historical Records.
Executive produced by Questlove, The Story Pirates, and John Glickman,
Historical Records brings history to life through hip-hop.
Each episode is about a different, inspiring figure from history.
Like this one about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa Parks did the same thing.
Check it. Did you know, did you know, I wouldn't give up my seat. Nine months before Rosa, it was called a moment.
Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records.
Because in order to make history, you have to make some noise.
