Starting point is 00:00:00 Had enough of this country? Ever dreamt about starting your own? I planted the flag. This is mine. I own this. It's surprisingly easy. 55 gallons of water, 500 pounds of concrete. Or maybe not. No country willingly gives up their territory. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:00:16 What is that? Bullets. Listen to Escape from Zakistan. We need help! That's Escape from Z-A-Q-istan on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey guys, I'm Kate Max. You might know me from my popular online series, The Running Interview Show, where I run with celebrities, athletes, entrepreneurs, and more. After those runs, the conversations keep going. That's what my podcast
Starting point is 00:00:46 Post Run High is all about. It's a chance to sit down with my guests and dive even deeper into their stories, their journeys, and the thoughts that arise once we've hit the pavement together. Listen to Post Run High on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. As a kid, I really do remember having these dreams and visions, but you just don't know what is going to come for you. Alicia shares her wisdom on growth, gratitude, and the power of love. I forgive myself. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Have grace with yourself. You're trying your best. And you're going to figure out the rhythm of this thing. Alicia Keys, like you've never heard her before. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Hey, y'all. Niminy here. I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families called Historical Records. Executive produced by Questlove, The Story Pirates, and John Glickman, Historical Records brings history to life through hip-hop.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Flash, slam, another one gone. Bash, bam, another one gone. The crack of the bat and another one gone. The tip of the cap, there's another one gone. Each episode is about a different, inspiring figure from history. Like this one about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa Parks did the same thing. Check it.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And it began with me. Did you know, did you know? I wouldn't give up my seat. Nine months before Rosa, it was called a woman. Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records. Because in order to make history, you have to make some noise. Listen to Historical Records on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone. Apple Podcasts, or every single wig removal together.
Starting point is 00:03:07 So listen to Still the Place on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. We have a very special Black stalk in your ear. Weekday morning, 6 to 10. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy, Angela Yee, Charlamagne Tha God. We are The Breakfast Club. We got a friend to the room. We have a very special guest. Seven's Quarter.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Don't you start with me today. Seven's Street. God. What up, y'all? What's up, good morning. You got another album coming out that fast? Man, no. It was an EP that just came out. Yes.
Starting point is 00:03:39 They working your ass off. No, I work myself off. This is what I do. No, I have a project. It's called Should Have Been There Part One. And I just wrote the songs when I was in a different space in my life and I didn't want to carry that
Starting point is 00:03:51 energy over to my album. So I was like, well, look here. Went to the label. I was like, I want to put these songs out. So we did. We put them out. It Should Have Been There Part One. And yeah, even though I'm not necessarily in that space because it wasn't a really good one, but some great songs came out of it. Did your ex get publishing?
Starting point is 00:04:07 Hell no, he ain't get no publishing, child. Absolutely not. It's not Atlantic on your ass? Like, look, we not tired of waiting on this album. Give us something right now. You know what it is? That's why I love them because we're able to have conversations about it. And, you know, they trust me and they listen to me.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And I was just like, look, I don't want these songs sitting on my laptop. You know what I mean? Even though I'm not going through it, somebody's going through it. And let's put them out, get the energy out the way, and then we'll put out the album. So what are they about? You cutting people's dick off and stuff like that? No. You can't say that word.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Charlamagne, what are you talking about? First of all, how did we start this interview without taking a shot, though? Oh, come on. I poured mine already. Oh, so you, well, how you gonna leave us, Hayden? I have nothing. I saw the bottle, but I ain't seen nobody pour nothing. So you just took it upon yourself
Starting point is 00:04:51 to pour y'all a shot. There you go. That's a big shot, y'all do this to me every time. I swear to God, y'all do this to me every time. Where's your shot? I'm doing that, Jane Hennessy. Oh, you fancy. You so fancy. We all have our things that we do upy. Oh, you fancy. You so fancy. We all have our things that we do up here.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Oh, okay. So, girl, you was talking about cutting the penis off. No, ain't nobody cutting. You said you was hating some dude and you wanted to kill him and cut his penis off. No, I was just, you know, I was going through some situations. And I had to, you know, like I say all the time, like I write about how I feel. And I didn't want that. I didn't want that to carry over into my album.
Starting point is 00:05:23 The interesting thing is that you do a song called Should Have Been There and then you put your boyfriend on it. I did. That's a slap in the face. I did. So you put your new man on a song about your ex-man? I mean, okay. I mean, guilty.
Starting point is 00:05:35 No, I did. What? It's about my life. So that's my life at the current moment, you know? So, yeah, I did that. And the song was called Should Have Been There. How did who have what conversation? You and your boo-boo.
Starting point is 00:05:44 New boo. I want you to get on this song about my old boo. What? I mean, this is the thing. When it comes to, like, work, I don't tell him how to do his business. He don't tell me how to do mine. So I got this record. I want you to get on. You get on it, you get on it, we good.
Starting point is 00:05:57 So he got on it, we good. He should have been there. Oh, wow. Exactly. Listen here. It's like Baylor basically is like kudos to you because you was there and you got it right. So did he do a verse dissing your old boyfriend? I mean, you know, he went in a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:10 But you know what? It wasn't nothing crazy. But so what happens when you put this EP out? Cause it should have been there with songs like Boomerang, which I think is my favorite. One of my favorite songs on there too. Boomerang? What's that about? What?
Starting point is 00:06:22 What you think Boomerang's about? You tell me. What do you think Boomerang is about? You tell me What do you think Boomerang is about, Charlotte? About throwing something Out there But it keep coming back to you I mean
Starting point is 00:06:30 You know Boomerang It's featuring Hip-Hop Boy Boomerang is just Basically talking about You know Going through with somebody It's like
Starting point is 00:06:38 How many times do you think You're gonna be able to come back? So that's what Boomerang is like Okay, no more Boomerang You know what I mean? Like Love should've brought your ass home. Like, basically.
Starting point is 00:06:46 So I'm done. Come on. It's over with. Treat it like a brick, not a boomerang. You know, kind of. Throw it as far as you can. Throw it as far as you can and get the hell away. So now what happens when you put out this EP and obviously your ex-boyfriend knows about
Starting point is 00:06:58 him, does he hit you up and say, bitch, you guessed it. No. No, we don't. We don't talk no more. I'm over that. That's over with. That's over with. I'm just saying he might have just tried to hit you anyway. I don't know if he has it or Keith still has it. My number don't really change like that.
Starting point is 00:07:13 He might have sent out a tweet like, you know what? No, he ain't stupid. Or maybe he didn't know you felt the way that you felt. Because a lot of times y'all go deeper in your music than you actually do in a conversation with a person. No I don't. It's how I feel is out there but I'm tired of talking about him. We're not talking about him no more. Well the whole EP's about him. You made a whole album about him. No. You made a whole album about him. You got like six, seven songs about him. Well listen here. There's also Shoulda Been There. Shoulda Been There is featuring Bob.
Starting point is 00:07:39 There's songs on there called Just Being Honest. It's just a bunch of great songs on there and I just want people to get into it. How much did you have to pay Bob to get on that? You want to take these shots? Pay? What? Bob ain't charging? What?
Starting point is 00:07:53 I pay him in other ways. I take these shots. Girlfriend or not, I need that money. Let's take these shots. In the eyes. Cheers to your new EP. In the eyes. In the eyes.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Where's your shot? I drink that vodka right there. I drink white vodka. So why are you not taking that? Nobody gives, because they didn't. That effing is empty. I got a little bit left. You do.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Just take it to the head. You don't even need a cup. You don't even need a cup. I don't know who else been in here taking stuff to the head. I was going to get a little cup. Oh, that's my clear urine in there. There you go. I hate you.
Starting point is 00:08:20 No, I'm kidding. You drink a lot of water. You drink a lot of water. You're going strong, huh? Oh, my God. We good. We good. All right. You ready? Did you take yours? Yeah, I did kidding. You drink a lot of water. You drink a lot of water. You and B.O.B. going strong, huh? Oh, my God. We good. We good. All right.
Starting point is 00:08:28 You ready? Did you take yours? Yeah, I did mine. You took yours? I just took mine. Oh, you ready? Come on, Seven. Keep up.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I'm sorry. I'm talking. There you go. Stop looking at her like that. That's big. I'm going to save the rest for later. Okay, Bob. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:41 All right. I hate you. I hate you, man. Now, you also did the Furious 7 soundtrack. You had a song on there, Bob. I hate you. I hate you, ma'am. Now, you also did the Furious 7 soundtrack. You had a song on there, too. How did you manage to get your song? I'm sure a lot of people wanted to be on that. Um, you know what? Excuse me. Um, the Furious 7,
Starting point is 00:08:56 that was just such a blessing, you know what I mean? Being a singer-songwriter, I get approached a lot of times about writing songs for projects, and it just worked out that I was able to write the record. I wrote it with my friend jado and i was featured on it i performed on revolt we did the um premiere and i performed it on revolt and it was just bomb i just had such a great time with that what's that money like um it's nice they pay you once for the song like well you get your you publishing you know what i mean like so you have a certain percentage of that and whatever the song makes,
Starting point is 00:09:25 that's how you get your publishing. All in her pockets, right? All in her pockets. But no, it's good, especially like internationally. Yeah, the song is really, really big overseas
Starting point is 00:09:33 so that was great. Gotcha. What happened with those big seven teddy bears that B.O.B. got you? He got you all those huge teddy bears. It was real cute in the house
Starting point is 00:09:40 but I was like, what is she going to do with them? They're still cute but they're cute in storage. They're storage. They're cute in storage and actually I wanna donate them I wanna donate them
Starting point is 00:09:48 well they I tried they don't you know for sanitary reasons they don't let you donate them to hospitals but you know I'm trying to get
Starting point is 00:09:54 like you was grinding on them and you're like nah we can't you know I'ma hurt you you know you can have fun on those I'm just saying
Starting point is 00:10:00 you masturbating with a teddy bear no boy you are sick you are sick for You are sick. You're sick in there. God, Charlamagne. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:10:09 So when are we getting the album out? Man, you know what? With the album, you'll get the album soon enough. I'm really, my fans know it. My label knows it. I'm so strategic and I'm a perfectionist. And I just like to take my time with that. And I have to put music out according to where I am and how it feels
Starting point is 00:10:26 so it's gonna come, it's definitely gonna come I'm still working on it a little bit but it's definitely on the way But isn't it weird though because you know you say you be in certain I guess spaces but once you're out of that space does it ever be like I don't like that record no more Yeah that happens, that's real life you don't wake up feeling the same way everyday
Starting point is 00:10:42 so it's the same thing with writing records and things like that. Would you and B.O.B. do a tour together like Nicki and me? I'm open. Absolutely. I would. I would do a tour. Because I heard you don't write your own stuff. I heard B.O.B. writes his own stuff.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Oh word! I did hear you had a little track. Is that what you heard? I mean, you know, I could write a little verse, you know. I might write one of his verses while you play. I'm just saying. But it is different for R&B artists. I mean, clearly you write
Starting point is 00:11:06 for other people. That's never an issue. Right. We don't expect you. It is a little, it's a little different. It's definitely different for R&B artists.
Starting point is 00:11:12 But, you know, yeah. But I definitely, I can write some rap verses though. Don't get, don't get twisted. Oh, so you write B.O.B. stuff. Don't get it twisted. I've said,
Starting point is 00:11:19 I've joked to him about that before. I'm like, you know, I could write you a verse if you need that. You might need it. Yeah, I could do that. But you know know it's your real baby has you put active no these are my real baby yeah this is real I don't know what that is girls put
Starting point is 00:11:35 activate on the edges to give the illusion of that's Bro, I'm like, what, how you know? When he had hair. Back when he had hair. That's why I asked you, like, hmm, let me make sure that me a real baby has. You see his eyebrows. I think his eyebrows got activated. He's real, bro.
Starting point is 00:11:54 That's right. Now, did you see a big difference in, I know when you guys first, everybody was like, oh, it's 7 and B.O.B. dating. At first, it seemed like people was hating on y'all,
Starting point is 00:12:03 but then it seemed like people got adjusted and was like, okay, they cute together. I mean, people are always going to have opinions. Your personal life is your personal life. And I like to, you know, we just live our lives day to day. We're in our relationship and then we do our music.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Like for me right now, I'm just in a music head space. It's all about music. It's all about, you know, my form of R&B. Like it's just all about that for me. So that's where my headspace. It's all about music. It's all about, you know, my form of R&B. Like, it's just all about that for me. So that's where my head is. Are you experimenting with a different sound
Starting point is 00:12:29 on a new album? Um, you know what? That's why I wanted to put out the Should've Been There Part 1 because it kind of gives you a taste of what my album is going to feel like.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Right. You know what I mean? It's not too far off. I may experiment with a few more sounds, but it's definitely not too far off. But I just,
Starting point is 00:12:44 I just have to get music out. That's very important to me. Isn't it hard dating another artist, though, because y'all might have little fights and might end up in a song just because? I mean, if it happens, it happens. You know what I mean? That's real life at the end of the day. If we get into a fight, he can write a record about it.
Starting point is 00:13:01 I don't care because I'm definitely going to write one. Y'all know how I do. Jesus Christ. No, I'm serious. It might be a should have been there part two. What if he writes about other chicks he's smashing and stuff, and then you like, hold on, you can't put that. He's like, no, it's just a song.
Starting point is 00:13:13 See, then we might have a problem. It's just a song. I'm not in that space anymore. So what you said in that verse, oh, really? Oh, word? Okay, we're going to have a problem. No, honestly, art is art man yeah because you know some of the things is old some of it is old it better be old
Starting point is 00:13:30 listen you know as a woman who writes do you respect artists less when they want help no i don't i don't respect artists less at all because you know what a lot of people don't realize is that with you know artists who do write um sometimes you get so busy it's impossible for you to write everything right you can't write everything like even i'll be all the way honest even when people like you know getting on seeing about drake you know having ghostwriters and stuff like that it's really hard sometimes like at the end of the day when drake first came out dra Drake didn't have a ghostwriter. We thought he was amazing. If he has one now, it would be okay. I feel like.
Starting point is 00:14:10 You know what I mean? But you're not really a ghostwriter if you get credited. Because a ghostwriter is like a ghost. You don't even get credit on an album. You get paid. You get paid. No one knows. It's a secret. But when you give somebody credit, is that really a ghostwriter? No. When you give somebody credit, they're a co-writer? No, when you give somebody credit, they're a
Starting point is 00:14:25 co-writer. You know what I mean? They're a co-writer with you. But in the case where there is a ghostwriter for whatever artist, I think that I understand it. It's hard to explain, but people get really busy. Artists get busy and you got to do a verse for this person, a verse for this
Starting point is 00:14:41 person. You got to be on this TV show. You got to be on this tour. And a lot of times, you know, you still oversee everything. You know what I mean? You just can't sit down and... Sometimes you, honestly, sometimes you can't. Like, it gets really busy. So I don't have an issue with that. And it does make it easier, too, though.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Like, when somebody gives you, I guess, a reference track and they got the cadence down and the tone and the flow. And all you got to do is just jump on that and add more. Well, I don't just... Yeah, exactly. Add your own. Because I have writers give me verses and things all the cadence down and the tone and the flow. And all you got to do is just jump on that and add your own. Well, I don't just, yeah, exactly, add your own. Because I have writers give me verses and things all the time. And I literally, I go through, weed out what I don't like, put in what I do like, change the cadence, change the melody, like that whole type of thing.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Do people ever ask you to write for them, but want you to just not get your credit and just give you some money? No, they ain't stupid. They ain't stupid. No, I would, yeah, I would never do that. But what about starting out? You know, sometimes like to get on even producers, you work under somebody and they get kind of the credit for it,
Starting point is 00:15:33 but you get. I mean, you know, I started out pretty much under Chris and Chris never did that to me. I mean, he never did that to me. Whatever I was a part of, even if I only wrote a couple of lines, he still made sure that I got, my name was in the credits and I got the publishing that I deserve so I've never gone through that what's the biggest song you've written that's for the biggest songs probably the way by Ariana Grande right oh sure
Starting point is 00:15:57 you wrote that yeah well or wait maybe yet three times is it the yet three times or the way because yet three times had like a lot of licensing like we got like it was it was international yeah and it was played on like a lot of you know tv shows commercials things like that who the hell was yeah three times i don't remember it's chris's uh chris's uh record yeah yeah no that's not the devilman experiment thing you are no that's that's the polo record. Oh. Yes. No. It's a pop record. It's a pop record. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:27 It's a pop record. I know what it is now. Right. It's that. Oh, that was good, Charlamagne. Are you still writing for other people now or just only focused on yourself? No, I'm definitely still writing for other people. I just got back into it, you know, pretty much because I've been working on, you know,
Starting point is 00:16:41 my Should've Been There Part One. I've been working on my album and things like that. But I actually, I've been having sessions with Diddy that have been absolutely amazing when I tell you I didn't I didn't think that I could learn so much in a session my god like what like literally like I'll um I'll throw out a melody and he'd be like no no no like I need I need to feel it I gotta feel it I need I need to feel, you know, that's just like some new age, like, cadency type stuff. And I didn't realize that I wrote that way sometimes,
Starting point is 00:17:10 which has been a learning lesson for me. Like, you know, sometimes we get caught up in a, gotta, gotta, sinna, unna, unna, unna. Like, that type of, you know, like, that rap cadence. And we do that a lot these days. And he was just like, I don't want that. Like, I need it to feel, I need people to feel you. Can you sing to the chords?
Starting point is 00:17:26 Like, can you give me a melody to the chords? And that was a lesson for me because I didn't realize that I was writing that way. So those sessions have been absolutely amazing. I tell them every time I work with them. So you're going to be in Dirty Money now? Listen here. If Diddy need me to do a do-wop-pop-pop, I'm going to do a do-wop-pop-pop for Diddy. What does a woman write for a man, though?
Starting point is 00:17:45 I always wonder about that. You know what? But when I do write for men, I make sure to have a male writer with me. Got you. You know what I mean? Because as much as we feel like we do understand a lot of times, we don't know what the hell going inside y'all heads. Y'all a little off.
Starting point is 00:17:58 I'm just saying. Y'all a little off. God. Guys are definitely more off than women. Right. A little bit sometimes. So, no, I make sure to write. Like, you know, like I'll off than women. Right. A little bit sometimes. So, no, I make sure to write.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Like, you know, like I'll write with J.D.O. or I'll write with Mike and me and him wrote it won't stop together. So I make sure to write with male writers a lot. Is Diddy paying you? You know he's notorious for not paying him. I hate you. When or if the record gets placed, I absolutely will. That's what you think? I'm positive.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I am absolutely positive about this. That's right. We good. Ask him if Diddy paying him. Is Diddy paying you for being on Revolt? Not am absolutely positive about this. We good. Ask him if Diddy pay him. Is Diddy pay you for being on Revolt? Not well, but yeah. Oh, God. Shut up, Charlamagne. Shut up. Who's the crazier one in the relationship, you or Bob, would you say? Oh, me, hands down.
Starting point is 00:18:38 What you mean? Me all day. He'll tell you, like, because I'm so, like, hard on my sleeve. If I feel it, I'm going to have a conversation with you about it. But I'm so like hard on my sleeve if I feel it I'm gonna have a conversation with you about it but I think that's how it should be I don't think you should let you know fester he probably be like oh god here we go again if he feel like that that's fine he'll be all right because at least he knows like at least he knows he ain't gotta guess about how his girl feeling at any point of time listen here I'm gonna be what kind of things you be beefing about I don't
Starting point is 00:19:04 that's the thing he'll tell you I don't really be beefing about? I don't. That's the thing. He'll tell you. I don't really be beefing a lot, but when I do have something I have an issue with, I'm like, yo. As I have the no genre on the back of my head. Hey now. Hey bae. You let the toilet seat up again, but I'm not dealing with this no more.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I have to let it be known. A lot of times y'all feel like, I've heard men say all the time, oh, we can't read y'all minds. We don't know what you're thinking. So he ain't got to never worry about what 7th is about y'all. Ever. The album is out right now, the EP.
Starting point is 00:19:35 The EP, yes. Tell me the name of it again. Should have been there, part one. So if Beyonce asked you to do a record, right, would you charge her? Absolutely. It's a business. There's nobody you would do a record for right, would you charge her? Absolutely. It's a business. There's nobody you would do a record for for free? But you do get publishing.
Starting point is 00:19:49 If that was a trade-off, you know what I mean? It's like, oh, you give me a feature, I give you a feature. Or you give me a record, I give you a record. That's when things are like, okay, that's kind of negotiable. But as a writer, no. I think that I'm all about people being fair in terms of, you know, business, publishing, whether it's, like, honestly, even to go all the way into, like, you know, Tyrese talking about how, you know, the state of R&B and things like that. I think that you should let, give people what they do. And I think that that's really, really important.
Starting point is 00:20:20 You know what I mean? Even in terms of, like, this whole, just R&B, period. Like, I just think that that's very, very, very important. What if you got a call Even in terms of like this whole, just R&B period. Like I just think that that's very, very, very important. What if you got a call from Michael Jackson to write on his new project? That's impossible.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Where's he calling from? That would be impossible. Unless you had a Ouija board. But you get your publishing. You get paid through publishing. Where's he calling from, Charlamagne? Heaven.
Starting point is 00:20:39 Would you still charge him? Seven? You better not charge him. Nah, I want seven to clear something up. If he calls from Heaven, he better not charge him. I need seven to clear something up because you caused some issues last time you were here. Ha.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Okay. You believe in rape. Shut up. What? Now, you had said. Absolutely not. You had said, I think when you commit to somebody and you take them off the market, I think it's your job as a woman.
Starting point is 00:20:58 I don't think you should ever say no. People were upset about that. She said, I'm talking about if you're tired or somebody's like, I'm tired. No, because at the end of the day, you took that person off the market. They can't go and be with someone else. So you don't ever say no. Clear that up and let people know. People were furious.
Starting point is 00:21:14 I mean, I still stand behind what I said. I don't know if they expect me to change that or not. It's not going to change. Why do you think people were so mad about that? But the thing is, I don't know, because I definitely, definitely i feel like it goes both ways it's for men and for women it goes both ways so i still stand behind that okay i ain't told bob no what if he has crabs would you tell him no you say what Oh my God. I'm not even going to do it. If you love him, you're still going to do it.
Starting point is 00:21:47 What? No. That's crazy. All right. She takes it back. She doesn't stand by it 100%. No, man. If there's crabs involved, she takes it back.
