Nimany here. I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families called Historical Records. Executive produced by Questlove, The Story Pirates, and John Glickman, Historical Records brings history to life through hip-hop.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Flash, slam, another one gone. Bash, bam, another one gone. The crack of the bat and another one gone. The tip of the cap, there's another one gone. Each episode is about a different, inspiring figure from history, like this one about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa Parks did the same thing. Check it. Did you know, did you know, I wouldn't give up my seat. Nine months before Rosa, it was called a moment. Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Because in order to make history, you have to make some noise. Listen to Historical Records on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone. This is Courtney Thorne-Smith, Laura Layton, and Daphne Zuniga. On July 8, 1992, apartment buildings with pools were never quite the same as Melrose Place was introduced to the world. We are going to be reliving every hookup, every scandal, and every single wig removal together. So listen to Still the Place on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo. I'm DJ Envy. And I go by the name of Charlamagne Tha God with the world's most dangerous morning show, The Breakfast Club.
Starting point is 00:03:29 And currently we are on vacation. Man, totally disconnected. Yes. We're not even really here. You think you're listening to us, but we're not. Well, we are not. We're here in spirit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Yeah. And we're going to be playing some of our top interviews and some throwbacks. So keep it locked. Red is going to be running the boards. It's The Breakfast Club. Good morning. Let's go. This is your time to get it off your chest.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Whether you're mad or blessed, just stay on your chest. We want to hear from you on The Breakfast Club. So if you got something on your mind, let it out. Hello, who's this? Good morning. This is Lima from Philly. Hey, Lima.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Good morning. Get it off your chest. Good morning, Lima. Good morning. Oh, my God. I don't believe I got through, but today's my birthday. Happy birthday. Happy Hey, Lima. Good morning. Get it off your chest. Good morning, Lima. Good morning. Oh, my God. I don't believe I got through, but today's my birthday. Happy birthday, Lima. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:04:11 First of all, I just want to let y'all know that I'm an Eagle 10. I don't care. We're going to bust y'all ass. We're going to bust y'all ass. The Cowboys are going to bust y'all ass. You wish that someone would bust your ass, Charlamagne. Wow. Wow. Damn. You can't get it wrong. Damn.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Goodness gracious. Second of all, I'm sorry. I just really want to get it off my chest that, okay, so I'm a nurse and I work in a hospital. You pay into all these insurance companies and these workers' comps and short-term disability, and when you get hurt, they really don't want to pay you. Like, it's your life. That's funny that you said that. I just had to fill all that out now.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Short-term disability, long-term disability. I had to do that all. And I mean, thank God I never got sick where I needed it. But people have been telling me that, that when they actually do get sick, it's really hard to get paid. It's so hard. And you think I work for a hospital.
Starting point is 00:05:05 They would pay me. But no. Like, that's really crazy to me. What's your disability? I, um, I'm sorry. I'm really nervous. I, um, I twisted my knee. I fell off a step in the front of the field. I twisted my knee. Oh, got you, got you.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Sound like you lying. That and the fact that you're Eagles fan. No, no. Listen, look at my, uh, worker's time claim you. Sound like you lying. That and the fact that you're an Eagles fan. No, no. Listen, look at my workers' time claim number. Now I want that. You ain't got to do all that. Now I know you lying. Now I know you lying. Good morning, and I'm just a little nervous. I'm shocked that I got this.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Well, have a good one, Lima. Enjoy your birthday, mama. Yeah, I hope you keep finessing the system. Hope you get everything you want out of the game. Hello, who's this? Hey, what's up, man? It's Leo, man. What's going on? Leo, what up? Give finessing the system. Hope you get everything you want out of the game. Hello, who's this? Hey, what's up, man? It's Leo, man. What's going on?
Starting point is 00:05:47 Leo, what up? Give me a chance, Leo. Hey, it's me. I got some nosebleed liquor tickets I got for you, man. Oh, man, he's kidding. He's smart and smart about it. How many times are you going to be scared of me? How many times are you be scared of me? How many times of me, man?
Starting point is 00:06:07 Goodbye, Leo. It'd be a walking lick. Hey, Leo. It'd be a walking lick, ain't it? It'd be a walking lick, ain't it? Hey, I feel like that ain't the only story. I feel like he got more, man. I feel like he got more stories, man.
Starting point is 00:06:19 This is not the only time. Goodbye, Leo. Bye. Goodness gracious. Hello, who's this? Hey, this is Karim. How you doing? This is from the DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God.
Starting point is 00:06:30 What up, bro? Peace, King. Hey, I got married this past weekend for my fiance, and it feels good to be married. I'm not going to lie to you. You said what? Got married this weekend. Okay, congratulations. Oh, congratulations, my brother.
Starting point is 00:06:43 How old are you? How old are you? I'm 33. Oh, man, that's beautiful, man. Marriage is Oh, congratulations, my brother. How old are you? How old are you? I'm 33. Oh, man, that's beautiful, man. Marriage is a wonderful thing, my brother. It's going to change your life. Make sure that you pour everything into your queen. Make sure that you stay a faithful man out here in these streets.
Starting point is 00:06:57 You know, don't get distracted, and watch how your life gets blessed. Always will, sir. I appreciate it. And y'all are a perfect example for it. I love y'all, man. Thank you, brother. Enjoy, man. Well, now we're a perfect example.
Starting point is 00:07:08 We'll take it now. I'll take it now. You know what I mean? Why don't you bring up the past, man? You're right. You know what? You're absolutely right. I saw my good sister, Debbie Brown, man.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Debbie Brown posted something this weekend. She said that there is no old you. It's just a new you waiting to something. I can't remember what the rest of it was. Get it off your chest. 800-585-1051. If you need to vent, hit us up now. It's The Breakfast Club.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Good morning. The Breakfast Club. Wake up, wake up. Wake your ass up. This is your time to get it off your chest. Whether you're mad or blessed, we want to hear from you on The Breakfast Club. Hello, who's this? Hey, my name's DeAndre.
Starting point is 00:07:55 DeAndre, what up? Get it off your chest. Hi, DeAndre. We here. Peace, King. What's happening? Hey, how you doing? Solomon, you got me. I can't believe I got a hold of y'all. How you doing? DJ Envy. What's up, brother? I just want to get off my chest. I commend all single mothers. I'm a single father of a nine-month-old baby.
Starting point is 00:08:10 I'm sorry. I'm kind of nervous right now. All good? I'm at work. I'm at work right now, man. I just want to let y'all know I really appreciate all single mothers out there. And I know how it is to struggle with a baby. I got three kids myself, but I got 100% custody of my nine-month-old baby, and it's really, really hard right now, man. We just had a real bad car accident two
Starting point is 00:08:30 weeks ago when we flipped our truck four times. Wow. And ever since, like, she's such a soldier, man. She didn't even move out of the car seat though, but she's so good, man. But it's been a real struggle in life. Like, that accident got me behind on everything. I know some people get on the radio and, like, don't be on breakfast or begging or stuff like that. But, you know, sometimes people just need real help. I'm at work right now, and I still need help.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Where do you work at, brother? I work at a place called Midwest Auto. It's a really nice place. We build Sprinter vans for celebrities, 50 Cent. Nipsey Hussle done got one from here before really we based out of Florida no it's in uh Indiana man okay okay what is it is it affordable I mean you know relatively affordable well what for you it is sure what is for you ain't no for you don't be you don't know what is going on over here hey I can't afford one man myself but I'm pretty sure one of y'all can, man. I don't know about that, sir.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Don't assume that. Yeah, I mean, hey, I wish the pay was as good as the vehicle was, man. Well, give your cash app out, man. See if somebody feel like being Santa Claus this morning. Man, my cash app is RootOfEvil87. Why is it RootOfEvil? My brother-in-law would have mercy. I made that cash app like three years ago, and it would not let me change it, man.
Starting point is 00:09:48 It's so juvenile, man. I didn't grow up past that part of my life, man. You know what I'm saying? How old are you now? I'm 35 years old. You grew up past that point in your life at 32, bro. Rudy Evil, okay? I don't like that.
Starting point is 00:10:00 But Rudy Evil, 87. Rudy Evil. And I got one question for you, brother. I know, uh, you know, a lot of brothers in the course, as I'm saying, it's very difficult to get, you know, full custody of a child, especially a baby. So... With a background, too, as well. Yeah, so how did you go about doing that for all the brothers out there that's been fighting and trying?
Starting point is 00:10:17 Well, I don't know. I'm just in a better position. Me and my wife, we made an agreement or whatever. I was just in a better position. It was a better situation for my daughter. Gotcha. Hey, I got a question too, my brother. Can you and your friends build me a Sprinter van under the table for the lower?
Starting point is 00:10:29 That's not how that works. That's not how it works? Hey, man, look, you can, hey, man, all you got to do is hit me up on Instagram or something. I can make anything happen for you, child of mine. Oh. Not like that, man. Don't start that, man. I'm not in it.
Starting point is 00:10:40 I ain't talking about that. I'm not in it. I want a Sprinter. You see, y'all really think I'm on that type of time, don't you? I want a sprinter, bro. Hold on. Pause. What?
Starting point is 00:10:51 Pause? What? Thank you, brother. No, it's not. Listen, man, don't believe the hype. But you know what you need to do, brother? Well, you know, I'll talk to you outside because if you know how to build those vans, a lot of times all it takes is a little bit of funding and you know the biggest thing right
Starting point is 00:11:07 now is those cargo vans that they're turning into those uh mercedes uh maybach vehicles that's exactly what they are that's exactly what because all they are is cargo vans that cost about 30,000 and it usually takes about 60,000 worth of work and then they're charging 250,000 so that flip that your owner has is a lot of money well you, we might be able to do something on the side. Yeah, let's talk, my brother, because my daughter got cheerleading season coming up. I mean, I'm serious, man. Hey, I can build a band and I can cook better.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Okay, enough said. Well, hold on a line. And his cash app is rootofevil87? Yes, sir. Help the brother out if you can, whether it's some Pampers, some Formula. I just need a car for me and my daughter. I just need it. Everybody send me a dollar.
Starting point is 00:11:48 I don't care. I'm humble. I'm grateful for whatever. I just need a car for me and my baby. I'm sending you a little something, too, right now, man. Consider it a down payment on that Sprinter. You're stupid, man. That you and your people are going to bill for me for the low luck.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Hold on, all right? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Thank you so much, man. All right, man. Well, get it off your chest. The Breakfast Club. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:12:05 The Breakfast Club. Is your country falling apart? Feeling tired, depressed, a little bit revolutionary? Consider this. Start your own country. I planted the flag. I just kind of looked out of like, this is mine. I own this.
Starting point is 00:12:21 It's surprisingly easy. There's 55 gallons of water, 500 pounds of concrete. Everybody's doing it. I am King Ernest Emmanuel. I am the Queen It's surprisingly easy. There's 55 gallons of water for 500 pounds of concrete. Everybody's doing it. I am King Ernest Emmanuel. I am the Queen of Ladonia. I'm Jackson I, King of Capraburg. I am the Supreme Leader of the Grand Republic of Mentonia. Be part of a great colonial tradition.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Why can't I trade my own country? My forefathers did that themselves. What could go wrong? No country willingly gives up their territory. I was making a racket with a black powder, you know, with explosive warhead. Oh my God. What is that? Bullets.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Bullets. We need help! We need help! We still have the off-road portion to go. Listen to Escape from Zakistan. And we're losing daylight fast. That's Escape from Z-A-Q-istan-Stan on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Hey guys, I'm Kate Max. You might know me from my popular online series, The Running Interview Show, where I run with celebrities, athletes, entrepreneurs, and more. Listen to Post Run High on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. As a kid, I really do remember having these dreams and visions, but you just don't know what is going to come for you. Alicia Keys opens up about conquering doubt,
Starting point is 00:14:22 learning to trust herself, and leaning into her dreams. I think a lot of times we are built to doubt the possibilities for ourselves. For self-preservation and protection, it was literally that step by step. And so I discovered that that is how we get where we're going. This increment of small, determined moments. Alicia shares her wisdom on growth, gratitude, and the power of love. I forgive myself. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Like grace. Have grace with yourself. You're trying your best. And you're going to figure out the rhythm of this thing. Alicia Keys, like you've never heard her before. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's up?
Starting point is 00:15:10 This is Ramses Jha. And I go by the name Q Ward. And we'd like you to join us each week for our show Civic Cipher. That's right. We're going to discuss social issues, especially those that affect black and brown people, but in a way that informs and empowers all people
Starting point is 00:15:23 to hopefully create better allies. Think of it as a black show for non-black people. We discuss everything from prejudice to politics to police violence. And we try to give you the tools to create positive change in your home, workplace and social circle. Exactly. Whether you're black, Asian, white, Latinx, indigenous, LGBTQIA+, you name it. If you stand with us, then we stand with you. Let's discuss the stories and conduct the interviews

Starting point is 00:16:09 Hey there, my little creeps. It's your favorite ghost host, Teresa. And guess what? Haunting is back, dropping just in time for spooky season. Now, I know you've probably been wandering the mortal plane, wondering when I'd be back to fill your ears with deliciously unsettling stories. Well, wonder no more, because we've got a ghoulishly good lineup ready for you. Let's just say things get a bit extra. We're talking spirits, demons, and the kind of supernatural chaos that'll make your spooky season complete. You know how much I love
Starting point is 00:16:42 this time of year. It's the one time I'm actually on trend. So grab your pumpkin spice, dust off that Ouija board. Just don't call me unless it's urgent. And tune in for new episodes every week. Remember, the veils are thin, the stories are spooky, and your favorite ghost host is back and badder than ever. Listen to Haunting on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I think within the first day, Will's company, Westbrook, they hit him up and, you know, they were like, we want to, you know, talk with you
Starting point is 00:17:18 and develop this thing. And, you know, I think a couple weeks after that, he was sitting with Will and he was talking about, you know, where we want to take this story. And years down the line, here we are. Totally different tone, though. Totally different tone.
Starting point is 00:17:29 What did you think when you saw that? Break that down. Break down, if people haven't seen the show, the differences between what we've seen as a kid, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Bel-Air. Well, you know, Bel-Air 2022 version is a dramatic retelling of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the quintessential 90s sitcom and uh you know it's all the characters that we know and love but basically we get to dive deep into who they are and the actual stories that are going on in their lives and uh you know it's it's a modern day retelling of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air basically and um and when you think of the story you know our our um our showrunner TJ Brady he said it perfectly he was like we all know the story of the Joker you know what I mean but when we see wonky Phoenix do what he was doing it was like did you really think about it
Starting point is 00:18:08 you know I mean so like we get to see this story we get to see how well ends up in Bel Air and it's gonna be super exciting for like old fans and new fans and man it's it's been crazy to love around the project did you were you afraid to turn something that I guess was so happy so I'll call it bright I'll call Fred Prince Bel Air bright would you were you afraid to turn something that, I guess, was so happy? So I'll call it bright. I'll call Fred Prince of Bel-Air bright. Were you afraid to turn something like that dark? No, I wasn't afraid of it. Because when I had seen Morgan's trailer, I was like, oh, I get it.
Starting point is 00:18:33 I get it. And I was like, I watched that. You know what I mean? And so I think it's important because it's a reflection of our world. You know what I mean? And I think it's important to see that. How hands-on was Will Smith during the taping and all that i i always say this it was it was great that he wasn't because he really gave us he really left the our retelling and our creation of these characters
Starting point is 00:18:52 to our own volition you know what i mean and so that allowed us to create these you know characters that ourselves are in you know i mean he didn't have his thumb on it hella you know what i mean and so i feel like that's what i appreciated about him but you know he definitely gave us a lot of tips what about the other characters carlton and all them with any of them come on set or did yeah we we had some we had a few talks with the original cast so uh it was definitely a blessing to to get their blessing and to see that that torch pass you know i mean i always wonder you know uh if and i would love to ask will this but maybe he told you i wonder what he have played that character differently now because you know oh he's older now and he always said that back then he was he was
Starting point is 00:19:30 pretending to be somebody he wasn't right right i wonder what he played at approach that character different now definitely i feel you know like when he when he was you know doing the fresh prince thing he had no acting chops at all yeah you. You know what I mean? And so he was just kind of up there just trying to figure it out. And I definitely think knowing what he knows now, it definitely would have been different, but it wouldn't have been as raw. So you got acting chops, so you weren't doing what Will could. But he said Will used to be saying everybody's lines. It was a little different for me.
Starting point is 00:19:58 It was a little different for me because I was a theater actor. Oh. And so this is my first time being in front of a camera, in front of a 40 In front of a 40 person camera crew And so that was definitely a learning curve for sure How'd they discover you? I just sent in my audition I had a manager, I had an agent
Starting point is 00:20:15 That I got through a showcase And they sent me the call They were like, yo, there's this show called Bel Air And for this character Will And I was like, hold on, Bel Air, Will And I saw the call and I was like, okay, okay i could do this i knew it was me i just had to prove to everybody else but i thought that they wanted like a big name you know what i mean i thought that they wanted somebody who was recognizable to everybody else and so i was
Starting point is 00:20:36 like i don't know how i'm gonna get this role but you know i mean i just had to surrender to the whole process and uh and so i sent him my call and uh and a couple a couple weeks down the line what did you have to do on that first tape do you remember yeah it was a couple it was a couple of scenes no i had the rap no no i just uh i just uh it was it was a couple of scenes it was actually a scene with lebron in it lebron was supposed to be in the first episode really you know it was you know budget and you know well he was supposed to be playing one of the people you were playing ball against no no no no he was to be at a bel-air party he was like oh that playing one of the people you were playing ball against? No, no, no. He was supposed to be at a Bel Air party. He was like, yo, that's LeBron.
Starting point is 00:21:06 You know what I mean? So I did a scene where LeBron was in it. And I mean, as soon as I read the scenes, when I first got the script, I was like, oh, this show has something to say. All right, we have more with Jabari Banks. He plays Will Smith in the new series, Bel Air. We'll talk through some more. It's The Breakfast Club. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:21:22 The Breakfast Club. Morning, everybody. It's DJ-Air. We'll talk to him some more. It's The Breakfast Club. Good morning. The Breakfast Club. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Charlamagne Tha Guy. We are The Breakfast Club. We're still kicking it with Jabari Banks. He's the actor that plays Will Smith in the new Bel-Air series. Now, with Bel-Air, are they recreating episodes that were done?
Starting point is 00:21:38 Because there's so many iconic episodes. You know. The father episode. Right. The pool hall episode. The drugs episode Yeah, are they recreating or they're doing new episodes? They're doing new episodes, but they're recreating moments I would say you know moments that are recognizable. They're gonna be like oh, okay, so if you've seen the pilot episode
Starting point is 00:21:56 There's a moment where will is on the plane and there's a glass full of OJ You know champagne glass full of OJ and that's, champagne glass full of OJ. And that's just a, you know, a callback to the original song, you know? And there's just moments, little small moments like that that are gonna get the audience hyped. I mean, the OG fans, you know what I mean? Did you have to learn how to rap
Starting point is 00:22:14 or did you know how to rap? Did you have that part done? No, I was a rapper before I was an actor. Oh, you was a rapper. Okay, so you're a rapper. What was your rap name? Big Banks. Big Banks.
Starting point is 00:22:22 No, no, I've been through many rap names. I used to call myself Indie the Philosopher. Actually, Jabari Banks is my rap name. Don't say that fast. We names I used to call myself Indie the Philosopher Actually Jabari Banks Is my rap name Don't say that fast We want to slow that down Indie the Philosopher Dang man Indie the Philosopher
Starting point is 00:22:31 I was in middle school Ask Charlamagne Ask Charlamagne What is his rap name What was your rap name Dizzy Van Winkle Like Dick Van Dyke No like Dizzy
Starting point is 00:22:42 Like Rip Van Winkle Mixed with Dizzy Dizzy Devil Van Winkle mixed with Dizzy Devil. Remember Dizzy Devil from Looney Tunes? It was Tasmanian Devil, but I think he had a son named Dizzy. Dizzy Van Winkle. Yeah, Dizzy Van Winkle. It was wild. Like, you know, Rip Van Winkle was asleep for mad long.
Starting point is 00:22:59 And so I always felt like, you know, I was asleep for mad long. And then I woke up like mentally confused. So I was dizzy. Oh, okay. Got you. Because they were sleeping on you. No, I got you. I understand. You you know I was sleep for mad long and then I woke up like mentally confused So I was dizzy. Okay got you cuz they know you don't know you know, I got you Okay, they're sleeping on you so I was in middle school You said that you learned so much from well in five Months, what are some of the things the Willy Llama taught you? Willy Llama, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Nah, yo, it's been super enlightening, for sure. You know, I feel like one of the bigger lessons that I've been taking with me, you know, I've been thinking about that a lot, is like, he says, you know, don't let the success get to your head, don't let the failures get to your heart.
Starting point is 00:23:40 You know what I mean? And I've taken that with me. I'm just like, man, like, there's a lot of noise, a lot, man, like There's a lot of noise A lot of noise And there's a lot of things That come into this business That aren't about the work
Starting point is 00:23:51 You know what I mean? And to just stay about the work Because that's how you elevate You know what I mean? That's how you You know what I mean? Inspire That's what we do
Starting point is 00:23:58 That's why we do what we do You know what I mean? Everything else around us Is kind of surrounding it And it's like, okay, cool That comes with the territory. It's interesting, right? Because you want accolades, but those same accolades can make you a prisoner to the opinions
Starting point is 00:24:11 of other people. Yeah. And you don't really want that. Yeah, no, no, no. You got to stay in here with yourself. Yeah, right. Yeah. I mean, accolades are just, they're nice, you know what I mean, when they come around,
Starting point is 00:24:19 but it's definitely all about the work for me. For me, you know what I mean? Because that's where I find my joy at. Like, you know what I mean? I find joy being here, you know what I mean? Because that's where I find my joy at. Like, you know what I mean? I find joy being here. You know what I mean? Just talking. But you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:24:27 When I'm doing my work, when I'm doing something that makes me happy, that's what it's all about for me. But you know what I mean? The awards, come with it. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:24:36 Come with it. When you thought about taking this, or trying out for this, did you ever get nervous that you'd be always stuck as that character? Like you look at Jaleel White,
Starting point is 00:24:44 he's always stuck as Jaleel White. No, no, no, no no i'm never i'm i'm too dynamic for that i knew that about myself like i i'm an artist that that is transformative you know what i mean like i think i think you'll see that throughout the throughout the years you know what i mean i i i can transform and i always knew that about myself like i was a totally different person a year ago two years ago you know i mean you'll look at that person like who the hell is that you know what i mean and like and so i feel like down the line um i want to take on roles that are going to give uh people a different perspective about how uh a black person can be you know what i mean like i'm super interested in being like in fantasy movies you know i mean and seeing fantasy science fiction fantasy science. And you're just like...
Starting point is 00:25:25 Like, show, you ever seen Lovecraft Country? Hell yeah. Lovecraft Country. You know what I'm saying? And like, it was a moment where it was like, oh, like, we can be... You know what I mean? We can exist in this type of...
Starting point is 00:25:36 And it was like, this was a period piece, but it was also fantasy, but it was also drama, and it was also, you know, sci-fi. And I definitely... It also lasted one season. It lasted one season, It also lasted one season. Because HBO could not imagine seeing all these black people doing this science fictional stuff.
Starting point is 00:25:50 That's what it seemed like. Yeah, I think that came down to budget. You know what I mean? We had Ajnu. Ajnu Ellis. We had Ajnu up here the other day. And that's what she said. She said she feels like HBO couldn't see black people
Starting point is 00:26:00 in that space for a long period of time. I'm interested in opening up that realm. I'm interested in opening up that realm. I'm interested in opening up that story. You know what I mean? And I feel like I don't ever want to get stuck in just the box of he's Fresh Prince. He's doing this. You know what I mean? That's not me.
Starting point is 00:26:14 And I don't think I'll ever be that person. You know what's so interesting? That's such a great question, N.V. asked, because it's like that role is so iconic. Right? Not just the role, because we're talking about, there's a lot of iconic roles, but the person who played the role became an icon within itself. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:30 So could you ever truly feel those shoes? I don't know if anybody would ever, and that's not a dis- I don't know if anybody would ever see you as the Fresh Prince. Yeah, no, I'm not interested in that. I'm not interested in, like,
Starting point is 00:26:40 actually feeling, like, you know what I mean? I'm telling a story that I'm telling for a new generation at the end of the day, and this is opening up opportunity for me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. like you know I mean I'm telling a story that I'm telling for a new generation at the end of the day and this is opening up opportunity for me yeah you know I mean and this is like giving me access for me to open up opportunity for the next person you know I mean and so my story is my story will stories history yeah we're not the same you know I mean and
Starting point is 00:26:57 like I'm telling this story of the Fresh Prince but like you know I'm telling this story of a 16 year old young man young man from Philly that gets sent to L.A., but at the end of the day, like, our stories aren't the same. And nobody will ever be Wilson if he's one-on-one. One-on-one.
Starting point is 00:27:12 And Jabari Banks is one-on-one. All right. You know what I mean? It's Jabari Banks. Seriously. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Thank you, bro.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Okay. It's Topic Time. Call 800-585-1051 to join into the discussion with The Breakfast Club. Let's talk about it. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha Guy. We are The Breakfast Club. Now, if you just joined us, we're talking about believing in somebody when they say they have mental health or mental health issues.
Starting point is 00:27:43 And I do believe people do have mental issues. But i also feel like people use it as an excuse i feel like it's an easy excuse to use because it's something that can't be checked it can't it can't be verified it's just something within yourself and i feel like people tend to use it let me ask a simple question who are we to say hey this person's lying about what they're going through mentally what they're going through emotionally how what they're going through emotionally. How the hell do we know? And I know that if somebody like Russ is walking away from millions of dollars, that's the thing. Like Russ isn't hurting anybody, nobody. The only person that's going to suffer in this situation is Russ. He's walking. If he's walking away from millions of dollars for whatever reason you already got a sold-out european tour that lets me know clearly there's something wrong and i salute russ that uh you know he's able to
Starting point is 00:28:30 articulate what it is that he's going through mentally because for so long man so many of us couldn't like yo you be dealing with mental issues you'd be dealing with emotional issues and you couldn't say hey man i'm suffering from mental health issues you got to make up some other excuse like you said earlier something about lying on your dog or something like that. I didn't say nothing about that. You said something about the dog eating kids or something. What did you say? What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:28:49 What did you say? It was something about the kids or something. I don't remember what it was. All I'm simply saying, but whatever it was, it's stupid excuses like that we used to have to make up. Oh, I would say that people always say that their kids were sick, but it would be an excuse or something like that. That's right. Well, let's go to the phone line. Hello, who's this? Good this is alicia from florida hey alicia talk to us alicia
Starting point is 00:29:10 what's your thoughts so i actually am i actually am a mental health counselor down in south florida um sorry my kids are excited to hear you guys tell them we said peace they hear you what's up guys yes i am a i'm a mental health counselor down in florida and i mean every single day i work in residential treatment down here and we have people that you know our ceos of companies our professional athletes you know our stay-at-home moms or teachers we have special education teacher in my center right now who had a mental health breakdown. And I cannot imagine this woman, she's in a psychotic break at this moment, she should be teaching second graders. You know, that's her job that she's on leave from. And I cannot even imagine this woman showing up to work for five minutes without a catastrophe occurring.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Wow. So people really need to understand mental health is not a joke it's not an excuse people can use it as an excuse just like during the pandemic people called off because they said they had a fever or whatever and you just let it slide because you'd rather them not come around and bring their potential you know negative exposures to the workplace if they need to do something to focus on themselves or to get themselves in their best health state so you know when these performers especially these artists celebrities a lot of them do have anxiety that's crippling a lot of them do have you know identity issues that they struggle with just showing up and putting out this image that there's somebody that we all expect them to be and if they fall short of that like char Charlamagne said, we criticize them for that.
Starting point is 00:30:48 We criticize them if they snap. We criticize them if they have, like, a bad night. So when these people say they just need a day off or a night off or they've got to cancel a tour, I feel like we all as a people need to learn how to respect those boundaries that people are trying to put up. Man, that's real. Why you hang up on the lady? I was going to tell her to give out her information. See, you're part of the problem, yo.
Starting point is 00:31:10 You are part of the problem. You. You with the fake beard. Looking suspicious over there. I don't look suspicious, man. See, that's your problem. I'm hurt by every time you talk bad about me. What?
Starting point is 00:31:22 I'm hurt. Hurt by what? By you talking bad about me. Ain't nobody talking bad about you. You just said. I'm talking bad about your beard. I ain't thinking nothing about you. But that's me. That ain't you. bad about me. What? I'm hurt. Hurt by what? By you talking bad about me. Ain't nobody talking bad about you. You just said. I'm talking bad about your beard. I ain't saying nothing about you. But that's me.
Starting point is 00:31:28 That ain't you. That's me. That's not you. It's not even yours. That's me. If you didn't spray it on, I wouldn't say nothing about it. If you left that in the can at home,
Starting point is 00:31:36 I would have nothing to say about it. 888-510-51. We're talking about mental health. You know, Lil Pump made fun of Russ and said it was some bull crap. And we're asking, when people say they're going through mental problems do you believe them you should and by the way who are you to even act like they lying you don't know what's going on in that
Starting point is 00:31:52 person's head it's the breakfast club good morning the breakfast club morning everybody it's dj envy charlamagne the guy we are the breakfast club we got a special guest in the building. A legend. Actress, Kim Field. Welcome. Thank you so much. It's so great to be here. I can't believe I'm just now getting here.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Oh, man. We happy to have you. Is this your first time on the show? Yeah. Really? Yes. How are you, first and foremost? I'm great.
Starting point is 00:32:17 How are you? I am blessed black and highly favored. Well, all right and all right. And happy birthday to you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Happy birthday to you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. How does was going to do what it did and continues to do and have the impact, you know, that it has on the culture and beyond. So it's exciting.
Starting point is 00:32:50 It feels great. Of course, we're talking about the Upshaws, if you haven't seen it. Yeah. Season two. So how did you get involved with the Upshaws for people that don't know? I was actually on a press tour for a movie that I executive produced and starred in called Adventures in Christmasing. And while I was in LA on the press tour they said hey can you come in and do a chemistry meeting with Mike Epps
Starting point is 00:33:10 and Wanda Sykes for a Netflix series and I wasn't checking to do a comedy but I was like that's a trio you can't say no to and so I went in Mike and I had great chemistry Wanda and I had great chemistry and the Netflix crew was there and before I got home practically they were like I went in, Mike and I had great chemistry. Wanda and I had great chemistry. And the Netflix crew was there. And before I got home, practically, they were like, yep, we're going to do an offer and, you know, go from there. Now, we've seen recently that Martin did a reunion show. Yeah. Would you guys be interested in doing a... You knew this question was coming.
Starting point is 00:33:39 I knew. I mean, living single reunion? You know... Could that possibly happen? You know, I think about it. We have this this really great thread, the six of us and Yvette who created the show, this text thread. And so, you know, we just love how everyone loves Living Single. And again, talk about impact, you know, that the show has made uh and continues to make and we don't want to taint that by just kind of throwing a reboot together with the idea of a reunion show thank god everybody's busy so you know there's no plans for one in the immediate future but you know one never knows i saw you tell people.com that
Starting point is 00:34:20 you got to be cautious when you do these uh reboots so whether it's facts of life or living single they said you have to be really careful so do these reboots. That's right. Whether it's Facts of Life or Living Single, they said you have to be really careful. So what are your worries exactly? Well, because these characters are beloved. You know, Martin, Fresh Prince, Living Single, Facts of Life, different shows. I mean, these characters, these shows are so beloved
Starting point is 00:34:38 and these characters really mean something to everyone. And so if you get it wrong, they're going to be mad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. As a fan a fan is selfish in a way right because it's like we would only want that for nostalgia purposes we got all the reruns we watch it now it's a timeless show so just enjoy the art that's there reboot to the reunion i mean no the show like the living single reruns all the time like it's like watching like the mona lisa just go enjoy the art that was created. Well, for a reunion, you want to see what your favorite cast members
Starting point is 00:35:06 are up to, what they're doing, if you don't see them. That's what I thought was dope about the Martin. Yeah. I think the reunions are kind of a nice,
Starting point is 00:35:13 happy medium. You know, a good hybrid for we're not really rebooting, but here you get to see us all together. Now, I'm going to be honest. I just thought about
Starting point is 00:35:21 I would love a reunion because I love hearing Erica Alexander talk. Oh, my gosh. She's brilliant. She's the best. Yes, she is.. See? Because I love hearing Erica Alexander talk. Oh, my gosh. She's brilliant. She's the best. Yes, she is. Queen Latifah, yourself, Kim Coles.
Starting point is 00:35:29 Yeah, I would like to see that. Yeah. Just a conversation amongst y'all. Right, right. Yeah, absolutely. Well, you know, when we had one of those anniversary specials that I think TV One did, and we weren't able to get everybody, but we got quite a few of us. And so we were sitting around and chatting about the show and that sort of thing. So we have had that type of a moment, not with everybody all in, but, you know, close enough.
Starting point is 00:35:54 Now you did Housewives. That was short lived. Yes. You didn't like it? Wasn't for you? No, no, no. It wasn't that at all. It was only supposed to be a one and done.
Starting point is 00:36:02 You know, it was it was Brett Favre with the Jets kind of moment so you know for me I did what I set out to do the mandate at that time in my career was I'm celebrating 40 years in the industry and so my team I said hey let's go into uncharted waters we only gonna do stuff that we've never done before and so they kept asking me to do reality for years. And I was like, no, the time's not right. It's just too much. So we said, okay, well, let's just give that a try and see. But knowing that I still had other shows to do,
Starting point is 00:36:37 other work to do as a director, as a producer, all kinds of things. So it was just one of those, okay, yep, did that. And then from there being almost catapulted into dancing with the stars which was a not only a game changer but a real life changer for me because there was such a deep dive of surrender and pushing my limitations all the way to the point of no return you know and that was the introduction to me for um life begins at the end of your comfort zone wow and so from there i haven't you know looked back since it's always forward motion of what haven't i done what can we still do because there's a lot to still be done now we're
Starting point is 00:37:17 dancing with the stars were you a dancer or was this something like i'd never done that before my life but you never danced so you had to train from the beginning. From scratch. How difficult was that? It wasn't difficult. But having that sense of doing something that you've never done before, but at the highest level, you know, was really exciting. Very, very demanding. Incredibly demanding. Dancing about six or seven hours every day. And I'm very competitive.
Starting point is 00:37:43 And so there was nothing that he could ask me to do I was like if you teach it to me I will do my very best and so now I have that skill set at that level and it introduced other things to me like now I want to compete professionally in tango so um I just started doing lessons I make time okay I make time for it. Yeah. And then COVID happened. So I had to obviously no more lessons. But, you know, integrating that back into the schedule is something that I really want to do. How would Kim feel to describe her journey in the entertainment industry? Very exciting. Very surreal, you know, to be the little black girl from Harlem who is the one that's still going, you know, and like our brother LL always says, doing it and doing it and doing it well, you know, and so it's very surreal that I'm not a stranger to people around the world, that people have known of me or me since I was
Starting point is 00:38:36 seven years old. You know, it's like Langston Hughes poem. Well, son, I'll tell you life for me and been no crystal stairs. You know, there's there's been some low lows and some high highs and, you know, all the stuff in between. There's still a lot to look forward to. But I think at the end of the day, I think people don't see me coming. Explain, what do you mean? Well, from the standpoint that they know of me, you know, it's almost like almost every time people say my name, it's like, oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:10 Oh, yeah. Oh, I got what you're saying yeah you know and so after a while in order for me not to you know have that really mess me up it became a thing of okay so now i have to flip the script and make it where i have the element of of surprise it's a surprise attack since now you're just not going to see me coming but know that i'm. So I think that's the way to describe it. It's like this push-pull of, I always feel very honored. But it's still a grind. I'm still grinding and hustling. Like, I'm new at this. I wonder if they don't see you coming because you've had the blessing of having two characters that are just absolutely beloved.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Like, you see you and you see those two characters. You think that is it? I characters that are just absolutely beloved. Like you see, you see you and you see those two characters. You think that is it? I think that's some of it. I think that's some of it. You know, I think that the characters that I've played and then being behind the camera for so many years.
Starting point is 00:39:56 And so it's, it's just kind of those, I really like the, um, expect the unexpected. I think that's my mantra going forward in my career. We got more with Kim Fields when we come back. Don't move.
Starting point is 00:40:08 It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Is your country falling apart? Feeling tired? Depressed? A little bit revolutionary? Consider this. Start your own country.
Starting point is 00:40:17 I planted the flag. I just kind of looked out of like, this is mine. I own this. It's surprisingly easy. There's 55 gallons of water for 500 pounds of concrete. Everybody's doing it. I am King Ernest Emmanuel. I am the Queen of Ladonia.
Starting point is 00:40:30 I'm Jackson I, King of Kaperburg. I am the Supreme Leader of the Grand Republic of Mentonia. Be part of a great colonial tradition. The Waikana tried my country. My forefathers did that themselves. What could go wrong? No country willingly gives up their territory. I was making a rocket with a black powder, you know, with explosive warhead.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Oh my God. What is that? Bullets. Bullets. We need help! We still have the off-road portion to go. Listen to Escape from Zakistan. And we're losing daylight fast.

As a kid, I really do remember having these dreams and visions, but you just don't know what is going to come for you. Alicia Keys opens up about conquering doubt,
Starting point is 00:42:23 learning to trust herself, and leaning into her dreams.
Starting point is 00:42:53 It's okay. Like grace. Have grace with yourself. You're trying your best and you're gonna figure out the rhythm of this thing. Alicia Keys, like you've never heard her before. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the

Starting point is 00:45:06 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha Guy. We are The Breakfast Club. We're still kicking it
Starting point is 00:45:16 with actress Kim Fields. How do you survive that social media time? Because at one time, like you said, you were only seen when you wanted to be seen. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:24 But now it's like, you know, you go to the mall or you go to the grocery store yeah somebody's sneaking a picture taking a picture i mean you could just have a head wrap on or you keep doing garden work and you know but people won't take a picture you know so how do you navigate through that well i i for me you know there's again people have seen me since i was seven so there's really no like kind of hiding space, hiding place. And, you know, so I'm comfortable. Like if I don't have my makeup. Hey, it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:45:52 It is what it is. Y'all have seen this face before it knew makeup. So there you go. But I feel like I've kind of navigated certain areas of social media. One, from that standpoint of if you can't beat them, join them. And also doing it on my own terms. If I'm not up for posting
Starting point is 00:46:12 or I feel like I've had just a sensory overload, take a little breather. But it's a space that I actually enjoy because I get, number one, I get to connect with certain people, even, you know, collaborations. I just did to connect with certain people. Even collaborations. I just did a collaboration with Jonathan McReynolds. And he sang on my soundtrack.
Starting point is 00:46:31 And now it's under consideration for an Emmy. Wow, congrats. And that was because, thank you, but I reached out on Instagram. Because we follow each other. And DMs can be great and horrible. So in that moment, it was great. But social media, there's certain things like anytime somebody tries to throw me in that auntie zone, I am quick to respond. This is the no auntie zone.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Hashtag no auntie zone. No, I am nobody's auntie. What is it with the auntie term that people use? Nah, nah, we ain't doing that. I like being called unk. I'm 44 today. They call me unk. I like it.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Really? Well, good. Good for you. Good for you. I'm happy for aunt They call me Unc. I like it. Really? Well, good. Good for you. Good for you. I mean, that's wonderful. But nah, uh-uh. And I think it's, you know, some of it's different from, you know, male-female vibe. So you mentioned your DMs.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Yes. How many fellas are in your DMs that you're surprised about, old or young? I'm sure there's got to be some young men in the DMms as well as some older people that's actually a great question because i think what y'all generation don't realize is y'all are showing a different level of aging gracefully like when we was growing up 40 and 50 used to seem like oh that was that was grady. That's Grady. Yes. That was Grady. Yes. Absolutely was Grady. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:56 Well, I mean, to answer that, in my DMs, it's just, you know, I basically have it set to the people that I know. So I don't have any, like, surprise, like, oh, my God. No. And then in terms of, like, aging, like you said, it's such a different time. It's such a different everything, you know. And so I plan on adventuring and journeying and doing, I mean, just I'm in such a new space, I think, too. And again, the genesis of it, Dancing with the Stars and then being regarded the way that I am as an executive producer. You know, people talk about having a seat at the table. My journey, quite honestly, is I felt like I had to actually build the table and the chairs.
Starting point is 00:48:32 And then everybody was like, oh, let me come to this table. So I have a seat at the table. It's just different how that table and that seat got created. And so that's actually very empowering and very um exhilarating liberating oh we yeah so that's that's really where i'm i'm really hovering and and moving about and and so with that yeah as i'm leveling up age-wise it's one of those like you know like the princess said age ain't nothing but a number that's right i. I want to talk to you about the content of black shows, art, right? Do you think that it was some type of conspiracy
Starting point is 00:49:09 to change the content? Because everybody talks about how the content is destructive now and influences people the wrong way. But growing up, you saw Living Single. Y'all had careers. Y'all weren't, I guess, quote-unquote, ratchet, even though there's nothing wrong
Starting point is 00:49:23 with being a little ratchet. That's right. Do you think there was a conspiracy to change the content of the shows? Ah, there's probably a conspiracy about every damn thing. And especially anything positive to impact any people, let alone people of color. That said, I'm not aware of anything that was that in your face about it. I think that as a content provider, you have to listen to what the audience is saying that they want to see, you know?
Starting point is 00:49:51 And when they put on these great shows or positive shows or whatever, and people aren't watching, they get snatched up. So it's almost like, are we in our own way sometimes? But, you know, hey, we don't have to watch everything just because it's black people or just because it's music or just because it's, you know, there are certainly many different ways that people can enjoy content and stories. And so I think at the end of the day, it's really about what's good storytelling. What are really good characters?
Starting point is 00:50:20 I think that's what people want to see. And then it becomes the timing of it. You know, there are some shows that you feel like, God, that was ahead of its time. And then some shows you like, OK, we've seen enough of that type of show. Can we please see something else? So I don't know that there's a conspiracy or that there was. But I feel like there are certain efforts that we as the viewers, we actually contribute to. True, true.
Starting point is 00:50:46 You know, Kim Coles said that Fox used black shows like Living Single and Martin to build the network, then kicked them out the house. What are your thoughts on that? Yeah, I mean, you know, when you are growing a network and creating something from scratch, yes, you do gravitate towards what do we know is going to sell right away? What do we know will have that loyal audience right away? And historically speaking, it's been black shows. But yes, there is that sense of, okay, we got the numbers, we grew the audience.
Starting point is 00:51:19 And then sometimes it's also if there's a change in the guard, if there's a new network executive and they want to create a new vision, put it in a new direction, then, you know, and it has nothing to do with being, you know, shows of color. Then, you know, you go that route. So I think that, yeah, that there is definitely something to what Kim said in terms of, you know, how they build the network. Yes. Do I think that there could have been a touch more finessing in terms of how you transition into whatever the new direction is? But, you know, people run their network how they want to run it. So how important is it to have a creator like a Regina Hicks who's worked on like Insecure, Girlfriends, Sister, Sister? Is it important to have somebody who understands those legendary black sitcoms and what it takes to create one yes from the standpoint of her experience not in my opinion not because she's a woman or a woman of color you know but and and here's why because there are
Starting point is 00:52:21 those of us my gaps wander side to me we are people of color and you know two of us, Mike Epps, Wanda Sykes, me, we are people of color. And, you know, two of us are women. So we're already going to bring some of that to the table. So the idea of, well, we need somebody who understands that voice. Well, not if we have that voice. Her resume and what she knows about running a writer's room or what she knows about how to have a successful show and a successful comedy. Those to me are the more important boxes to check if you're going to just start checking boxes. But I do feel like there has to be that sense of diversity, even when you are telling a specific type of story. Like people will say, oh, I'm looking for a black director. I need a female director.
Starting point is 00:53:05 Well, I check those boxes, but I don't approach it that way I'm a director and so my sensibilities are about how to tell a great story secondary and what's kind of tertiary is yes I'm female or yes I'm a person of color but for me it's you know if you're a great director you should be able to tell anybody's story now i love that because you know you have some companies they got that uh title now what is it president of diversity and uh inclusion inclusion yeah but it might be a black person that has no connection to the black community no experience with black people whatsoever listen i you know in the wake of certain tragedies in the wake of certain difficult moments in society, we had some what some would consider forward motion, forward movement.
Starting point is 00:53:53 And exactly what you're saying. And for me, I'm not about being a box checker. And when you are a box checker and then you don't have the skill set to back it up, it's like get in the door with the boxes that you check. But then what you're going to do once you're in the door, you have't have the skill set to back it up it's like get in the door with the boxes that you check but then what you're going to do once you're in the door you have to have the skill set you got to bring the thunder otherwise you're just a box checker taking up air so then check the box that i'm an air taker upper you think that's messing up the art because it feels like sometimes they'll put some black shows on black black movies, and it'll be whack. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Yes. Yes, I do. Yes, I do. I feel like it's messing up the art, the craft, the culture. I mean, just, I mean, come on, you know, diversity on anything is what's up. I mean, it just makes it that much more interesting, that much more collaborative, that much more real in terms of what the reality is in most people's environments. Yeah, I want you diverse in thought, though. I like diversity, but I like diversity in thought, diversity in creativity.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Like what you said is the talent first. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. And then, hey, if you check a box or two, cool. But at the end of the day, that's more of a I think of a corporate mindset because they want to look good. That's right. We got more with Kim Fields when we come back. Don't move. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Charlamagne Tha Guy, we are the Breakfast Club. We're still kicking it with actress Kim Fields. Now you talk about, you talked about you wanted to do reality
Starting point is 00:55:25 show. You wanted to be a director. You wanted to do this. Is there anything that you haven't done yet that you want to do? What's on your bucket list that you're like, this is what I want to do? Oh my gosh. Well, I guess I don't approach it like bucket list vibe. I think I approach it more of just, here's some shit I want to do.
Starting point is 00:55:41 So let's go. So for me, definitely I want to do more drama. I definitely want to do okay let's let's go so so for me i'm definitely i want to do more drama i definitely want to do um sci-fi because i love sci-fi and fantasy and you know folks can't just be the only ones in you know blue and green makeup and getting a check i mean come on i put another color on me and i'll get a check too. Ask him what he wants to do for his birthday today. What are we doing today, baby? What are we doing, brother? That's what he wants to do for his birthday.
Starting point is 00:56:10 The only thing. I'm going to therapy at three and I got a workout at six. But, you know, I'm watching Miss Marvel on Disney Plus. And there's a welcome to the journey. That's exciting to me. Just to see it. Yeah, she's the first Muslim superhero. She's on top of the sign. Right. just to see it yeah she's the first Muslim superhero she's on top of the sign right so I thought
Starting point is 00:56:26 you was gonna say that you wanted to be up there and sit next to her on the sign that's some birthday drama my anxiety too bad
Starting point is 00:56:34 there ain't no way in hell hell you ain't doing that nah I'm cool you just wanna see it in the I just wanna see it you and him
Starting point is 00:56:41 gonna undo your seatbelt no no no I'm just gonna drive by like oh that's dope. Keep it moving. Well, the upshore season. Oh, I got a couple more questions. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:56:50 Because, you know, you said earlier, you said this is a thankless business. So what do black creators need to do to get their just due? Manage your expectations on getting that just due. You know, usually my answer is, you know, be good. Be better than. You know, set the bar. Don't just get good, be better than, you know, set the bar. Don't just get to the bar. And in fact, raise the bar. Those are fantastic goals to have and more than likely attainable.
Starting point is 00:57:14 But at the end of the day, you can do all of that. And if your goal is beyond what you can control, then, you know then you have to manage that expectation. Great example. Years ago, Blair and I were talking about auditioning. And he said, you know, make the goal something other than booking the gig. Because that's actually not in your control. You can go in there, crush it, and not book it. Because of circumstances beyond your control. They've already cast crush it and not book it because of circumstances beyond
Starting point is 00:57:45 your control they've already cast they're going with a different type of look they're going with a different name all kinds of things and so what is the goal but don't make the goal something pressurized like i gotta book this to pay my rent i gotta book this to get the light bill paid or my baby needs you whatever it is because that pressure will then mess you up and you won't be able to be at your best but when you find that space where you are not in a pressurized moment then make the goal something that you can control so that's what i think when i say manage your expectations my last question you grew up in the entertainment industry. What was the best and worst advice you received? Thankfully, I've not had any bad advice. And if I had, I guess I just didn't listen. So but my best advice was from my mom. And I mean, my goodness, when I wrote my
Starting point is 00:58:38 autobiography, I just felt like it should be called, you know, chips gems, because my mother just dropped gem after gem in my life. But when I was growing up, like one of the early days of facts of life, and she said, you started 100 percent and everything that you do and say every day that you're here either keeps you here or it can chip away. Oh, right. Oh, and I was like, OK, all right. That's that's all right. And then the second piece of advice, when I went to do the audition for the Miss Butterworth Seraph commercial.
Starting point is 00:59:09 So Janet was there. And that was the first time that I'd even seen her or met her. And, you know, they had those Jackson summer specials. Yes. And so I knew who she was. And I got into that. And that was my first audition, first time doing anything. We had just gotten to L.A.
Starting point is 00:59:23 And I thought, oh, my God, that's Janet Jackson. I don't belong here. I want to go home. I want to go home. And I got terrified and very insecure. And my mom took me into the bathroom and she said, listen, she's not doing anything to you. You are doing this to yourself. Don't let anything or anybody intimidate you of your own doing but don't don't do it and there
Starting point is 00:59:47 are times to this day guys if i'm like feeling you know some kind of way or in my feelings and feeling like oh i'm not sure whatever and you know my my level of confidence or my security is not on full blast i will go into the bathroom and tell myself don't let anything or anyone intimidate you. And especially when you're doing that to yourself and they're not even doing anything to you. Don't you allow your own mind to do that? So those were the two. Go ahead, Ms. Chip.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Right? Because that keeps the child from never having imposter syndrome. Yeah. Always feeling worthy. Yeah. Which are two things that you always deal with no matter how old you are that's right absolutely absolutely and so that level of security you know really really helped seal seal the deal for me all right yeah well check out the upshore season
Starting point is 01:00:38 two right now and we appreciate you for joining the legendary man thank you you're right listen i'm so glad that I was able to finally get here and finally meet you. Happy birthday to you. Thank you. Have an amazing,
Starting point is 01:00:51 amazing next chapter filled with so much adventure and wonder and success and being grounded. Happy birthday to you. I receive it all. Thank you. Yes, indeed.
Starting point is 01:01:02 And go on and sit up there next to her. Take that adventure and always stay with me. I receive it all. Thank you. Yes, indeed. And go on and sit up there next to her. Take that adventure no way, no way. It's Kim Fields. It's The Breakfast Club. Good morning. The Breakfast Club. Your mornings will never be the same.
Starting point is 01:01:15 When it's time to get with someone special, the best way to do it is with Magnum large-sized condoms. That gold foil wrapper is a badge of honor, and it means you're protected, and you take care of things with comfort except no substitutes bring the pleasure with the gold standard Magnum large size condoms you are a donkey it's time for donkey of the day donkey of the day huh
Starting point is 01:01:43 imma fatten all that shit around your eyes they They want this man to throw them blows, man. They wait for Charlemagne to tap these gloves. Let's go. You have to make a judgment of who is going to be on the Donkey of the Day. They chose you. This is a breakfast club, bitch. Who's Donkey of the Day today? Well, Donkey of the Day goes to the police in Pinellas County, Florida.
Starting point is 01:02:01 And 27-year-old Kaitlyn O'Donovan and 29-year-old Sarah Franks of Clearwater, Florida. All of y'all getting donkey of the day because clearly none of y'all have anything better to do. Now, what does your Uncle Charlotte always tell you about the great state of Florida? What has your Uncle Charlotte been telling you on this radio for the past 11 years about the great state of Florida? The craziest people in America come from the Bronx and all of Florida. And I must say in recent years, there is other places in America trying to take Florida's crown, Texas.
Starting point is 01:02:30 I'm talking to you. Okay. But Florida, y'all still have the crown. All right. Y'all still the Kings of the thing. All right. Now,
Starting point is 01:02:36 if I told you that someone was charged with assault and battery, what would you think? And be assault and battery. What would you think? What's the first thing that comes to your mind? Punching somebody. Yeah. Right. That's the textbook textbook definition it's an act of physical violence assault refers to the act which causes the victim to uh receive imminent physical harm
Starting point is 01:02:55 okay while battery refers to the actual act causing the physical harm oh no let me say that again assault refers to the act which causes the victim to apprehend imminent physical harm, while battery refers to the actual act causing the physical harm. So hitting or punching somebody. All right. Forcibly causing them pain is assault and battery. I actually think that when somebody gets their ass kicked, we've been doing ourselves a disservice by saying they simply got beat up. All right. When somebody gets done dirty, we should we should say man you got batted all right batted sounds way worse than beat up even if you threaten somebody keep it up i'm gonna batter your ass all right don't make me batter your punk ass all right that's why words matter in the context of words matter because it sounds so cute when you think of batter in the context of pancakes
Starting point is 01:03:39 waffles red velvet cake and it is all those things but when you say i'll batter the bricks off you boy it changes things. All right. Could that work in the context of prize fighting? Like if I say Jake Paul batted, you know, Nate Robinson or Jake Paul batted Tyrone Woodley. No disrespect to those brothers at all. But I'm just trying to show you all what battery looks like. We've all been on Worldstar for years.
Starting point is 01:03:57 We've seen what, you know, battery is. We know what it looks like when someone gets dragged. You know who else knows what battery looks like more than anybody the police all right the police arrest folks for assaulting battery all the time hey sometimes someone gets batted and depending on the situation police don't even arrest them might detain them until they cool off but they don't take them to jail because it's bigger fish to fry bigger issues out here than folks having a kerfuffle here and there but not in florida nope in florida one person's kerfuffle one person's skirmish is another person's battery and i know there's a
Starting point is 01:04:30 lot of law enforcement that listens to the breakfast club uh salute to all the police officers out there that listen i need y'all to tell me if i'm tripping okay when you see me in the streets if you want to call up tell me if i'm tripping for giving the pinellas county florida police the biggest hee haw for arresting these two women. Because when I heard this story, I just shook my head and said to myself, life as we know it is really a dramedy. Let's go to WFLA for the report, please. Two women here smiling in their mug shots, but facing felony charges after police say that they threw glitter at a man during an argument in Pinellas County, Florida. And no, glitter isn't some slang for something you've never heard of.
Starting point is 01:05:07 We're talking about the shiny stuff, glitter, here in this story. This is 27-year-old Caitlin O'Donovan and 29-year-old Sarah Franks, both women, according to Clearwater Police, throwing a container of glitter at the victim during an argument. The arrest affidavit stated that the man was hit in the head and in the torso now officers say that frankston climbed over a balcony fence went into the man's apartment and through more containers of glitter at him frankston and o'donovan are both arrested in charge of felony burglary
Starting point is 01:05:39 with assault or battery and the arrest affidavit also said the vehicle was still warm when the police, uh, you know, uh, found the car and glitter was inside of it when police found it as well. Uh,
Starting point is 01:05:51 I wondered did they buy all this glitter somewhere in Florida recently? Or was it just a lot of leftover glitter from Christmas? We're talking glitter, man. Glitter like the 2001 Mariah Carey movie. Okay. Glitter like little Kim's iconic purple pasty jumpsuit from the 99 VMAs. Now, I'm not making no excuses for Franks and O'Donovan.
Starting point is 01:06:08 That's why they sharing in this donkey as well. They went to that man's house. They kicked the window until it broke. Okay, they broke into that man's apartment, started arguing with him, and threw containers of glitter. That's breaking and entering disorderly conduct at the most. All right? But charging them for battery, taking them to jail, and filling out paperwork because these two young ladies did some glitter bombing maybe they lesbians and it was an act of protest don't the lgbt community use glitter as an act of protest maybe the guy was dating one
Starting point is 01:06:34 of the women and she found out he was batting for the other team who knows so she decided to batter him with glitter there is something gold dusty here don't you think by the way if this is the route we're going in America, Dustin Rose, they're about to bring up a bunch of retroactive charges against you and the WWE for all that glitter you done blew in people's faces. Okay, if you ask me, these women should be arrested for breaking in that man's house, but charged with assault and battery for throwing glitter. Eh, bah humbug. Okay, I understand some legal officers argue glitter bombing is assaulting battery because it's possible for glitter to enter the eyes or nose and cause damage that leads to infection depending on the size of the glitter. But do you really have a case about glitter going in your nose if you already snort cocaine? That has nothing to do with nothing.
Starting point is 01:07:21 But the moral of the story is Pinellas Police, y'all don't have anything better to do? Please give the Pinellas County Police Department and the two young ladies, Caitlin O'Donovan and Sarah Franks, the sweet sounds of the hammer tones. Oh, now you are the donkey of the day. You are the donkey of the day. Yee-haw. Yee-haw. I was about to play something too, but I'm not doing it. You don't play game? No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:07:55 You know, we don't have to play a game. These are the two people. They're right here. Sarah Franks, Caitlin O'Donovan. You can start them. Come on. O'Donovan. Come on.
Starting point is 01:08:03 Come on. Come on. That'd be funny though. What? You know, fight with somebody. Just throw glitter in their face. That would not be funny. That'Donovan. Come on. Come on. Come on now. That'd be funny though. What? You know, fight with somebody and just throw glitter in their face? That would not be funny. That would be funny. I'm telling you,
Starting point is 01:08:09 there's something bigger here. I really think that, you know, one of them was dating a dude and the dude started messing around with another guy, but that's just me and how my brain works. Because that's very specific
Starting point is 01:08:18 to go to somebody's house with glitter. That means something. I'm bringing glitter here on Monday. Just know that. For what? All right, Goldust. You forget that time Goldust gave somebody something i'm playing i'm bringing glitter here on monday just know that what all right gold dust forget that time gold dust gave somebody mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and put their tongue in their mouth put his tongue in their mouth oh my goodness okay so if you're gonna
Starting point is 01:08:33 go there go there nope i'm not going all right thank you for that donkey today it's a breakfast club good morning the breakfast club hey guys i'm kate. Starting point is 01:13:57 If you need relationship advice, we'll help you out. Yeez not here. Hello, who's this? Hey, what's going on, man? It's Jeffrey. Hey, Jeffrey, man. What's your question for us, man? So I got three baby moms.
Starting point is 01:14:08 One of them just causing a lot of problems making false accusations and stuff like that. So I just kind of want to see how I can weed her out and still be able to stay with my girlfriend without her, like, causing rumors and all that good stuff. So you got three baby mamas, but your baby mama is messing up your new girlfriend. Basically, yeah. The advice I would give you, sir, is it's a guy named Doc Brown that you should seek out. Doc Brown has invented a time machine. It's in the form of a DeLorean. You should get into that DeLorean and go back in time and wear a condom, sir.
Starting point is 01:14:33 That's what you should do. Well, sir, I mean, there's really nothing you can do. I mean, you put yourself in that position. You have three baby moms. You got to deal with it for the rest of your life. The only thing I would do is try to separate my baby moms from my girlfriend unless they're trying to get in touch with her on social media and things like that and then i would go into my girlfriend's phone and block them myself so they have no way to speak to each other and you should wear condoms now so you don't have a fourth baby mama because your protection game is
Starting point is 01:14:57 clearly trash very trash yeah yeah i got well she already been blocked but she's like calling different numbers sending videos and all that stuff like that. And I'm actually looking to propose to my current girlfriend now, but she's just calling like a whole bunch of problems. I wouldn't marry you. You got three kids from three different baby mamas. I wouldn't marry you if I was her. Well, I'm glad you wouldn't marry him. You're married already, sir.
Starting point is 01:15:18 Yeah. Hello, who's this? This is Juice. Hey, your name is Juice? Yeah. All right. You sound like your baby in the backseat choking on some juice right now. Why are you coughing so much?
Starting point is 01:15:28 What's your question? I got a couple kids in the back. Whoa. All right, what's your question, Mama? My question is, for some reason, it's not hard for me to find a date or find somebody to deal with, but I just cannot keep anyone. The relationship is horrible. That's because of them two little kids in the back. Stop. How many kids do you have back there, mama?
Starting point is 01:15:48 I have a set of twins and a son. You got a set of twins? You got five kids? She got three kids. A set of twins and a son. A set of twins. Okay. All right. I'm stupid. South Carolina Public School Education. So you got three kids. Nobody want no ready-made family, ma.
Starting point is 01:16:01 That's just all it is. Okay. Well, let me ask you a question. How do you look? Are you in the gym? Do you look nice? Tell us how your parents look. I mean, well, I recently lost a lot of weight, and I look damn good. All right.
Starting point is 01:16:12 I'm telling you, like, flies on the turn, like, everybody's at me. All right, well, everybody's asking. We don't have good conversation, though. Like, I cannot, I hate that. Well, where are you looking for these guys? Nobody wants a ready-made family, man. Why are we lying to this young lady? You got three kids.
Starting point is 01:16:26 That's what it is. Stop. Clearly, your box is good because people have shot your club up a few times. You know what I'm saying? But they just don't want that ready-made family. Now, there's some guys out there who got two and three kids themselves. So, y'all can come together and make y'all own little ghetto Brady Bunch. But other than that, nah.
Starting point is 01:16:42 Well, where are you looking, mama? Are you in the club? See, if you're in the club, yeah, your body might be looking, you might look good. And like he said, if you're in the club, these guys want to smash
Starting point is 01:16:50 and they might not want a ready-made family. But if you're looking for... I don't club. I don't club, indeed, period. I don't club. I got three kids. Okay, so where are you going to look?
Starting point is 01:16:58 Where are you looking for these guys at? They find me at the grocery store, at the gas station, at the library. Find a man that has two or three kids like you do. Try Christian Mingle.
Starting point is 01:17:09 Christian Mingle. Christian Mingle. Yes, people on Christian Mingle are very forgiving. They're very forgiving. That's all I can come up with. 800-585-1051. Hey, mama, good morning. Good morning. Hey, ask I can come up with. 800-585-1051. Hey, Mama, good morning. Good morning. Hey, ask C&E.
Starting point is 01:17:28 Hi, so my question is what do I do if I find my husband having an LGBTQ app on his phone? He's looking at gay men or gay women? What is he looking at? Well, I mean, I found messages
Starting point is 01:17:43 on the phone, on the app, when he was in the shower. So I haven't confronted him about it yet. But is it men contacting him or is it women contacting him? Hell to the yes, men. Make sure it's not Disney Plus now. Because the LGBTQ Plus, Disney Plus, it's not. The Plus can confuse you sometimes. And what do these messages say, mama?
Starting point is 01:18:07 Well, like, oh, we should meet up. Oh, but I got to plan it out because I have a girl. He mentioned me. Let me ask you a question. Let me ask you a question. Sorry? Why when you have all this evidence and you have a message that clearly states his intention, why are you calling up here?
Starting point is 01:18:26 Because she's still going back. He's on a porn site and there's another man. But she knows what to do. Yes, you need to go confront him. Show him the messages and confront him and ask him why he's talking to men on porn sites. Well, it's not porn. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:18:42 Or dating sites, I should say. What is that? It a lgbtq plus app he's asking to meet up with people confront him you have more than enough evidence yes he's cheating on you yeah or attempting to cheating on you you need to do it or wanting to cheat on you. Something. Yeah. Guess I'm donkey today. Well, I need more information. You should confront him and ask him what's up. Yeah, well, I'm gonna.
Starting point is 01:19:13 And you might need to free him. You know what I'm saying? He might need to go live his truth. Or he might be, you know, into men and women at the same time. We don't know. You need to find out, mama. You need to find out.
Starting point is 01:19:24 Yeah. I should have known when he started to want to get pedicures a little more than the average. Now, wait a minute. I get pedicures and manicures on the regular. That means nothing. And her point is true. Thank you so much, mama. Good luck. Please let us know how it works out.
Starting point is 01:19:40 First of all, pedicures do not mean anything. I need a pedicure right now and a manicure. I love pedicures and manicures and I get facials. Self-care is mean anything. I need a pedicure right now. And a manicure. I love pedicures and manicures. And I get facials. Okay? Self-care is very important to me. I know you like facials. But thank you, mama.
Starting point is 01:19:50 Good luck. You so chocolate, Charlamagne. Oh, flattery will get you everywhere. Thank you. You're welcome, man. You so chocolate. The old man still got it. Don't act like Hunk.
Starting point is 01:20:03 Don't still got it, man. Chocolate thunder over there. You hear me? Ask C&E. Where's the breakfast club? Good morning. Ask Charlamagne and DJ Envy anything. Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up. It's time to ask C&E.
Starting point is 01:20:18 Morning, everybody. We're in the middle of Ask C&E. If you need relationship advice, you can call us right now. Hello, who's this? is anonymous from detroit all right anonymous anonymous anonymous got a ftd i can feel it what's your question miss anonymous you're crazy you're my man okay so look i've been dating this guy for like seven or eight months right and finally i met hisold son. Well, his son is related to me. He's my cousin. And, like, I don't feel comfortable dating him anymore.
Starting point is 01:20:50 And he does not understand this. Like, his child's mother is my cousin. We don't know each other like that. But she thinks it's funny. She's like, oh, you know, we dated over 10 years ago. You know, he's just a good father, blah, blah, blah. But no, bro. So she had sex with her cousin.
Starting point is 01:21:04 It was so uncomfortable. Let me get this straight. You had sex with your cousin no his son his son is her cousin his son is her cousin so he knocked off her cousin so it's just a family affair y'all not y'all not really you're not related that that blood is not in you you good money if you like him no i know but i just don't want to talk to him no more like no i want children one day that mean our kids would be cousins ancestors what's wrong with that if y'all already had sex right it's kind of too late to turn back now all right you already did it you already had sex with your cousin or your cousin's son whatever child's father and it was not on purpose and no man go ahead and keep it in the family did you like it no listen my advice is not whether i should keep her my advice
Starting point is 01:21:44 man go ahead and keep it in the family if y'all kids like it? No, listen. My advice is not whether I should keep f***ing her. My advice is how to be good at her. Man, go ahead and keep it in the family. If y'all kids is born with an arm coming out of their forehead, y'all know why. All right?
Starting point is 01:21:52 It's okay. Y'all are irritating. I don't know what you want me to tell you. You already slept with your cousin. Yeah, you might as well stay. It's not her cousin, man.
Starting point is 01:21:58 It's her cousin's brother. Yeah, my cousin ain't really already coming. I am. And your kid's gonna be too if you keep sleeping with your cousin. Thank you, Mama. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:22:07 We hope not. Hello. Hello. Who's this? Hi. My name is Dinesha. Good morning, Envy. Good morning, Charlamagne.
Starting point is 01:22:13 Good morning. Dinesha, good morning. What's your question for CNE? My question is primarily for Charlamagne. Charlamagne, I too am from Charleston. Love your book. Can't wait for your new book to come out. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:22:22 843, what's happening? Hey, Charlamagne. I primarily wanted to know, I wrote a book myself. I'm 22, pretty young, so I'm not really familiar with how to publish. Is it better to self-publish or is it better to go through a publishing agency? Well, I have a publishing agency. I'm with Touchstone, Shimon & Schuster, but I don't see any problem with self-publishing either i think self-publishing is dope i buy a lot of books from people who actually self-publish i mean that's you know you got amazon right there you can you know press up as many copies as you can afford to press up and put them up on amazon why don't you send the book up why don't you send the book up in and let us read it and shout you out oh really i only have
Starting point is 01:23:02 like the paper version. Paperback version. Oh, paperback. Sorry. Yeah, I primarily wrote it. It's done. I just don't know where to go from here. It took me about a year to write. It's pretty much just talking about.
Starting point is 01:23:15 Is it on paper, like loose leaf paper, or is it in book form? I have it in book form on my iPhone. I mean, you could try both. You could try to shop it to a publisher. If a publisher doesn't want it, then you put it out yourself on Amazon. Send it up here, Mama. We'll read and shout it out. Hello, who's this? What's lying to people? Good morning.
Starting point is 01:23:31 Good morning. What's your name? Anonymous. Another anonymous. Anonymous. What you got? Herpes? Chlamydia? Stop it. What's your question, Mama? Everybody in my town listens to your radio station, so I'm like, let me just keep it anonymous. What's your question? My question is, okay, so I have two children by two different men.
Starting point is 01:23:50 Twins! Project twins. My youngest father is a deadbeat. However, my oldest, his dad, you know, he's saw a deed, and he feels as though, you know, this is his son's sister. He stepped in and he plays that role in my child's life. Now, three years later, her father want to come in the picture and she has such a great connection and she's very attached to my son's father. I don't know if I should let him in because he's full of disappointments and
Starting point is 01:24:22 he he'd been in the same building with her before and didn't acknowledge her in public so why should i let you in now i don't think you have a choice i don't i don't think you have a choice i think if he's the real daddy can he come see his daughter he lives four minutes away and she haven't seen him in almost two years yeah i would say it's never too late man but i mean if he's not really if he's not really making a real effort to be in a child's life, and if he ain't got no money, why confuse the poor kid? Why is it about the money with you? You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:24:51 Why confuse the poor kid? But still, he might be wanting to change. You always talk about people changing. Maybe this man wants to change. But she got a father figure in her life. Well, he's called. He's called. Every month he calls and says, hey, I want to pick her up this weekend.
Starting point is 01:25:03 And the weekend come, and I don't hear from him at all. Oh, yeah, now you got to box him out. Change your number. Don't even mess with him. I'm gambling now. Is it worth setting him up? Yeah. Why confuse that poor girl for a broke b****?
Starting point is 01:25:14 How do you know he broke? Because she just told us. He is. He owe me like 10 bands and child support. Oh, yeah. No need for that, boo. Yeah, keep that away. Keep that away from your child.
Starting point is 01:25:24 Don't be confusing your child. You don't want that negative energy around your child you know when you pray to god to take negative energy out your life he's not swinging at spirits he's swinging at people things and broke baby daddies that's the embodiment of that negativity all right huh well do you realize that she got up she got her a nice father figure that got his life together they have the best relation he loves he loves, he adores her. And we're not even together. So for a man to step in and do that for her, I mean, come on.
Starting point is 01:25:50 Okay. The only thing your other baby daddy can do for you at this point is pay that 10 grand and child support he owe you. Yeah, that's all he gotta do is pay that
Starting point is 01:25:56 and we'll be okay. He don't ever have to ask about her, see her, interact with her. Just pay up. That's all. My goodness.
Starting point is 01:26:03 It's not all about the money, Charlamagne. That's your first thing. Is he broke? It's not all about the money, Charlamagne. That's your first thing. Is he broke? It's not all about the money, you bird. Well, that sounds like some sound advice to me. My goodness. Well, good luck. As see and if. You couldn't get through the phone lines. I see a lot of you tried. We'll do it again tomorrow.
