promising $5,000 checks if Republicans keep control of Congress, but there's still no program and no
money approved. So can these checks actually happen? And the $5,000 is going to everybody.
I made that pledge. I always keep my pledge. And some of the biggest names in AI are now saying slow down.
The technology is moving too fast, but President Trump says slowing down could mean losing
the race to China.
As whoever wins, AI wins.
And an 11-to-one vote ended the Lindsay Clancy trial in a mistrial.
And now we're learning something about the holdout juror, and what happened next is raising
questions about juror privacy.
One person of color was a person of color, a woman or a man.
A man?
A man.
From the Black Effect podcast network, I'm Mimi Brown.
and here are the day's biggest stories.
Stay with me.
President Trump is doubling down on those $5,000 checks.
He's promising American adults if Republicans keep control of Congress.
Trump first announced the idea last week,
and over the weekend he was asked whether Congress would have to approve the money
and whether the government could actually afford it.
If the Republicans were, as he said, it's $5,000 of all adults in the country,
and we can easily handle that.
Because we're taking in so much money.
We've never done better.
The Democrats can't make that pledge because it'll all go to hell right away.
If the Democrats get in, you'll go into a depression.
If we get in, we will continue this incredible situation.
I mean, we have the strongest, we're the strongest we've ever been.
We have trillions of dollars coming into the country.
And the 5,000 is going to everybody.
I made that pledge.
I always keep my pledge.
But here's the reality there's still no $5,000 payment program.
Congress has not approved it and no money has been approved for those checks.
House Speaker Mike Johnson says Congress would have to approve the payments and lawmakers
would still have to work out the details. And there is pushback, though, from both sides.
Some critics are calling the promise an attempt to buy votes because Trump has tied the checks
directly to Republicans winning the midterms. And some Republicans are also questioning
where the money would come from and what it would do to the national debt.
We're talking about more than a trillion dollars if every American
received $5,000. So for now, this is still a promise from the president, not a check Americans
are guaranteed to receive. And last week we told you about AI researchers warning that the technology
is moving faster than they know how to control it. Now some of the people running the biggest
AI companies are sounding the alarm too. Anthropic CEO, he is calling on the industry to slow down,
saying safety measures aren't keeping up with how quickly AI is advancing. Let's listen.
I won't lie to you. There are real dangers.
And I think for too long, the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risk.
It doesn't mean we need to panic today.
It doesn't mean we need to shut it all down.
I would say it's a warning sign.
It's a warning sign that we need to slow down.
A kill switch could be a good idea.
But I don't think banning it completely.
banning it is the right approach. And he's getting support from Open AI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman
and ex-AI founder Elon Musk. He's also proposing independent outside evaluators who would
essentially be allowed inside AI companies to test their systems and make sure they're following their
own safety rules. Open AI Sam Altman says his company will do the same. Elon Musk's response was
even simpler. Dario is right. But President Trump is pushing back saying the U.S. can't afford
to slow down and risk China taking the lead.
Whoever wins AI wins.
And we can quit guardrails.
We can do this and that.
But I think you have a lot of negative forces
that are bringing it up.
That shouldn't be bringing it up.
And they're bringing up things that won't happen.
And remember this debate exploded last week
after leading researcher Jacob Coxton quit Anthropic
and warned publicly that the people building AI
believe there's a possibility it could kill all humans
by the end of the decade.
And lastly, now to a new twist in the Lindsay Clancy case
and growing backlash over how the lone juror is being treated.
Remember the jury was 11 to 1.
11 jurors were prepared to find Clancy,
not criminally responsible for killing her three children.
One juror disagreed, forcing a mistrial.
Now we're learning something we didn't know before
that that holdout juror was a black man in his 30s
and the only black juror on the panel.
And that came out during a recent interview on CBS Mornings,
And let's listen to Gail King's reaction when she realizes it.
One person of color was a person of color, a woman or a man?
A man.
A man.
Is a holdout juror a person, a black man?
Yes.
A black man is a holdout juror?
Yes.
Well, I have to sit with that for just a second.
And now there's backlash over what happened after that.
NBC Boston started digging into the holdout juror's personal life reporting on
past domestic violence allegations and a restraining order in an eviction case.
The station has not released his name, but here's the issue. Jurors are supposed to have
privacy and protection when they serve. His name is not public and the jury listed in this case
is impounded. So now people are asking why is this one juror's personal life being investigated at
all? And would any of the 11 jurors be facing this kind of scrutiny if the vote had gone the other
way? For now, the mistrial stands and the case heads back to court later this month.
That's your front page.
