Starting point is 00:00:52 Last episode I was talking about, you know, Peter having an encounter with the resurrected Jesus here. and to my knowledge when I was reading it this morning, I didn't see it. And that's okay. Basically what I was talking about last episode was that Jesus, like, tells Peter that he's going to deny him three times. Imagine Peter beating himself up after he denied Jesus three times, right? And then there's this encounter we have in the Gospels where we read that Peter meets with the resurrected Jesus and Jesus tells him exactly how he's going to die.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Why would he do that? He told him exactly how he was going to die to encourage them that he would endure till the end. That he would endure till the end for him. Now, let's read Luke chapter 24. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb taking the spices that they had prepared the women, and they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
Starting point is 00:01:52 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, These men said to them, why do you seek the living among the dead? He's not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee that the son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise? And they remembered his words. In returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the 11 and to all the rest. Now, this is powerful.
Starting point is 00:02:17 If Jesus had simply died and didn't resurrect, then there would be no power in Christ. But the fact that he raised from the dead and defeated death, means that in him, we too can defeat eternal death and separation from him and have forgiveness for our sins. Now, it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary and the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale. They did not believe them.
Starting point is 00:02:45 So the women came back and were like, you guys will not believe what just happened to us. We saw two angels, and they told us that Jesus had resurrected, and we remember that Jesus had told us this, but we didn't remember it. but then we did remember it when he told us. You can't believe it. He's alive. And they're all like, you're kidding me. That's not true. As though they didn't believe him. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb, stooping and looking in,
Starting point is 00:03:06 he saw the linen clothes by themselves, and went home marveling of what had happened. That very day, two of them were going to a village named Amas, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all the things that had happened. While they were still talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with him. But their eyes were kept from recognizing. He was amongst him, but they didn't recognize him.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And he said to them, what is this conversation that you were holding with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking sad, they were sad about the death of Jesus Christ. And one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? And he said to them, what things? And they said to him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty indeed, and word before God and all the people. and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.
Starting point is 00:03:58 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes. And besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb earlier this morning, and they did not find his body. They came back saying that they had seen a vision of angels who had said he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.
Starting point is 00:04:20 And he said to them, a foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Like dude, he's like, dude, are you guys kidding me? The prophets have been speaking about this, the death and resurrection of me. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. So he went back and talked about Moses and all the prophets that had talked about the Messiah dying and rising again. So they drew near to the village to which they were going.
Starting point is 00:04:51 as if he were going further. But they urged him strongly saying, stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent. So he went in to stay with him. When he was at the table with him, he took the bread and blessed it and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were open and they recognized him. Keep in mind that their eyes were open when they ate a meal. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, did not our hearts burn with us while he talked to us on the road while he opened up to us the scriptures. And they rose at same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the 11 and those who were with them gathered together saying the Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simon.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Then they told what had happened on the road. Oh yeah. Sorry. I lied. That is him. That is him. He had breakfast with them. He ate food with them and he revealed himself to Simon Peter. Sorry. I lied about that at the beginning. Sorry, guys. I just not realized that I read it again. Sometimes you read
Starting point is 00:05:38 something the second time and you're like, oh my gosh. It did say that. I apologize. First 36. As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, peace to you. But they were startled and frightened and frightened. thought they saw a spirit. Jesus comes in and says, hey guys, and they all get scared. So funny. And he said to them, why are you troubled and why do you doubts arise in your heart? See my hands
Starting point is 00:06:00 and my feet that it is I myself, touch me and see for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have. Jesus has risen in his physical body and says, look, here are the wounds to prove it. Put your hand in there and feel it. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands in his feet and while they still didn't believe him, he showed them his wounds in the flesh and they still did not believe him. And notice what I. told you to remember earlier. And while they had joy and were marveling, he said to them, have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish. He took it and ate before him. Then he said,
Starting point is 00:06:32 them, these are my words that I've spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms was fulfilled. So everything in the major and minor prophets and the Psalms have been talking about me. Verse 45. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. Why is it at the dinner table Jesus opens their minds to scriptures. I think the dinner table is such a powerful place to have conversations about Christ and salvation. Because it's such an intimate place.
Starting point is 00:06:56 You don't just eat dinner with random people. The dinner table is an intimate place. You don't just invite random people into your home. The dinner table is an intimate place. And we're about to watch here. They're about to have Thanksgiving together. Not the literal holiday, but they have joy in Thanksgiving together.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Thanksgiving doesn't just have to be a holiday. All right. Thanksgiving. can be a heart posture. Gratitude is our number one weapon against sin and temptation. First 45, then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures and said to them, thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead and that the repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all the nations beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things and behold, I'm sending the promise
Starting point is 00:07:38 of my father upon you, but stay in the city until you are clothed with power on from high. So he's saying, look, I'm going to sin the Holy Spirit, the promise from the father to you. And then he says, but stay in the city until I give you that power, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is going to come onto them like power from on high. Verse 50 to close. And he led them out as far as Bethany and lifting up his hands. He blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And we're continually in the temple blessing God. Guys, that is Luke. The entire gospel of Luke. And if you guys want to continue on the story and you're left on a cliffhanger, go read Acts. because Luke wrote axe and it flows right into axe. It's powerful.
