Now, let's get into the passage. Now we've got a couple different things going on here, but we're about to watch Jesus move in his earthly ministry. And I'm excited for these next few passages here in chapter 5 because this is awesome. We're now watching Jesus.
Starting point is 00:01:28 walk out his earthly ministry. Chapter 5, verse 1. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the words of God, he was standing by the lake of Geneseret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simons, he asked him to put out a little from the land, and he sat down and taught the people from the boat. So now we're looking. Jesus is being pressed.
Starting point is 00:01:55 They're such a big crowd. People are probably flooding Jesus. They're saying that they want to hear the word of God. They want to hear His teachings, but there's also people that are filtered in there that just want the healing of God. They want the benefits of Jesus. They don't want him as their king. They just want the benefits of the kingdom, the gifts and not the giver. They're pressing him.
Starting point is 00:02:11 So he's got to get in a boat to make space so he can actually teach them. And it gets into Simon Peter's boat and Simon Peter allows him in. So we're about to watch Jesus basically show Simon Peter a favor here. it says when he had finished speaking he said to him he said to simon put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch and simon answered master we toiled all night and took nothing so jesus is asking peter to do what in his eyes is the impossible they've been up all night they've been fishing and haven't caught a single thing and then he goes but at your word i will let down the nets but Jesus, I mean, but Simon Peters, but I'll try. I'll do it for you.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Is showing Simon Peter's humility and ability to submit to Jesus Christ. He's like, but I will listen to you. Your Lord, I will listen. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled the boat so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he felt. down at Jesus' knees and said, depart from me, for I'm a sinful man, oh Lord. He's saying, man, Jesus, I was wrong. I was wrong. I'm acknowledging that you're right. He's calling him
Starting point is 00:03:33 Lord. It's like, you're the Christ. For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of the fish that they had taken. And so were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. So James, John, and Simon Peter were all fishermen. That was their job. They were fishermen. And Jesus said to Simon, do not be afraid. For now on, you will be catching men. When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. I love this story because now we see Jesus call just regular old fishermen, what was just known as like a bum job back in the day.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Like these just regular bums, Joe Shmos, Jesus calls him to follow him. He says, look, you thought that this was your calling was to be a fisherman all your life? Yeah, you are going to be a fisherman, but this time you're going to be a fissure of men. I'm going to call you to actually bring the fish to me, bring the lost sheep to me. I think it's so powerful, just practical, what Jesus calling the disciples. Now, we're going to watch Jesus heal a leper. And I love this passage right here. It's short, but it's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:04:35 While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. A leper was someone who was extremely sick. There was no hope for improvement for this person. The lepers would hang out outside of the city. These guys were outcasts. they would oftentimes have bells on their staffs or bells on them so that when they were walking, they could warn people that they were coming so people wouldn't get near them. Because if you touch someone who was a leper, you were deemed unclean because lepers were deemed unclean.
Starting point is 00:05:04 These were outcasts, unclean people, no hope for improvement. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him. Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. He doesn't touch Jesus because he realizes if he touches Jesus, He's going to now make Jesus unclean according to the law. And so he's like, look, I'm going to fall before him, keep my distance, say, Jesus, if it be in your will, please make me clean. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him saying, I will be clean.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Jesus Christ touches the very man that would deem him unclean. Why does he touch the quote unquote unclean man? Jesus is showing compassion on the leper. Jesus could have healed the leper without touching him. He could have said, be healed in Jesus' name. Then he would have been healed. But no, Jesus Christ shows compassion on the leper by touching him when no one would. I wonder when the last time this leper has felt the touch of a loved one.
Starting point is 00:06:03 When's the last time this leper has gotten a hug from a friend or a hug from a family member or someone shook his hand? No one would touch this man. He was an outcast. Everyone wrote him off as he'll never get better. and Jesus Christ leans down and touches him and says, I will heal you be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him. And he charged him to tell no one.
Starting point is 00:06:25 But then he says, go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing as Moses commanded for a proof to them. This was a law in Leviticus 14 that if lepers got clean, they had to do this purification law. But here's the beauty of it. It was such a rare practice to occur that if the leper showed up to the priest to perform this law in Leviticus 14, this leprosy law, that it would be such a miracle to be seen because if you were the leper in a city, everyone knew you were the leper. Everyone knew that you were the sick
Starting point is 00:06:55 outcast that no one could go near. So if you showed up to the priest and showed them that you were clean and did the ritual, did the practice in Leviticus 14, it would just be a miracle in itself to see the leper healed and they would probably ask what happened. And we often know that when Jesus tells people not to say anything, they end up saying stuff. But now even more, the report about him when abroad and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities but he would withdraw to the desolate places and pray again we see jesus like the crowds are coming for him and instead of jesus running to the crowds he's running from the crowds to be with the father i love this now we're going to see jesus here heal a paralytic i mean these are some amazing
Starting point is 00:07:34 amazing amazing stories on one of those days as he was teaching Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of galilee and judea and from jerusalem And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. So now we're seeing the religious leaders who claim that Jesus is a blasphemer. Yeah, these guys, they're showing up and they're watching him because they're trying to catch him up and trip him up. Maybe some of them are curious. And behold, some men were bringing on a bed, a man who is paralyzed. And they were seeking to bring him in and lay before him Jesus.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And lay before, lay him before Jesus. Now, listen, when we read the story, I want you guys to pay very close attention because I believe God has something really in store powerful about the story that we owe. overlook oftentimes. But finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. So now they come here. The crowd's so big, they can't even get the paralytic man in the crowd. But these guys, they don't give up. And he let them down through the roof. They climbed up to the roof. There's often a staircase at that time to get up to the roof. They get up to the roof and they lower him down through the roof. And when Jesus, when he saw their faith, he said, man, your sins are
Starting point is 00:08:44 forgiven. And the scribes and the Pharisees began a question saying, who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? Now listen. Let's stop right there. This is what I want to highlight here in this passage. I want you right now to think of someone in your life, a family member, father, mother, brother, sister, a close friend who seems to be so far gone, who's so lost, lost in their sin, lost in their addictions, lost in their struggles. I want you to think of that person right now. Why is our initial instinct as followers of Jesus to write them off like society wrote off the leper? Why society wrote off the paralytic?
Starting point is 00:09:28 Because they think, oh, in the natural, there's nothing God can do. There's nothing. Why is it that we write the closest people to us off when they're so far from God? Yet in the passage of the paralytic, the paralytic's friends, they didn't give up. They said, well, just because we can't get to Jesus and front doesn't mean we can't get to him there's got to be a way and it was through the friend's faith that moved jesus's heart to heal the paralytic how can it be so that it's through our faith that we can see the spirit of god transform our lost family members our lost friends or lost
Starting point is 00:10:02 brothers and sisters in christ why is it that we write them off why is it that we hand them off and say you know what god can't do anything about it when james says the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Why isn't it that because we've been transformed by the love of God, we can't show that love of God to our brothers and sisters who are struggling and lost in their ways in such a way where we submit ourselves to a lifestyle of prayer on behalf of these people? Because prayer moves mountains and we're watching the faith of friendship actually move the heart of God to heal the paralytic. Their persistence and pursuing Jesus despite their circumstances, their faith and trust in Jesus' his healing power and his lordship, they move past the practical sense of, oh, there's too many
Starting point is 00:10:43 people we can't get to them. No, they were willing to do anything for their friend because they believed that Jesus Christ could transform their life. And if you believe that your friends are so lost and Jesus Christ can transform their life, then why don't you pray for them? Why don't you bring them to Jesus no matter the cost? Why don't you meet with Jesus and say, God save my father, save my mother, save my friend? God can do it. And we can learn that from the faith of the paralytic friends. That man, even though the natural says, oh, he's paralyzed, there's nothing you can do.
Starting point is 00:11:14 And even though the natural says, oh, there's too many people we can't reach him, that didn't stop them from persistently pursuing God on behalf of their friend, despite their circumstances. I think that's such a powerful thing in this scripture. And then after that, it says that the scribes and Pharisees says, who do you think you are? You speak blasphemy. You can't forgive sins, but God alone.
Starting point is 00:11:34 And they're right. Only God can forgive sins, except this time, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh. And when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered to them, why do you question in your hearts, which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk? For men, the power of healing and the power of forgiveness is hard. But for Jesus Christ, the power of healing and forgiveness is like easy, peasy to him. Verse 24, but that you may know that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins. And he said to the man who was paralyzed, I say, do you rise, pick up your bed and go home? He not only forgives the man's sins, proving that he's Jesus. He's God in the
Starting point is 00:12:16 flesh, but he heals the paralytic man and he gets up and walks home, something he couldn't do before. Now, I want to highlight this title that Jesus has, the son of man. Now, a lot of people will say, especially Muslims, they say, show me in the Bible where Jesus says that he's God. Where does he say that? well that's foolish Jesus doesn't literally say I am God okay he's not talking to Americans Jesus limits himself
Starting point is 00:12:44 in his human ministry to just the Jewish people okay Jesus couldn't be in Texas and Israel at the same time he came to minister specifically to the Jewish people but salvation is for all people and while he's in his earthly ministry to the Jewish people
Starting point is 00:12:59 he's going to speak in a language that is undeniable to the Jewish people where they know that he's the Christ the way he's talking. And when he calls himself the son of man, he's referencing to Daniel 7, a prophecy about the Messiah to come that references the Messiah as the son of man. Jesus also says before Abraham was, I am, a title that many Jews would recognize from the Old Testament, I am is the title of God. So when people say, oh, where does Jesus say he's God? Well, he's speaking very clearly to the Jewish people at the time in a context and a lingo that they can understand that he's claiming it to be
Starting point is 00:13:35 God. On top of that, Jesus Christ receives worship and moves and miracles and powers that only a man sent from God or a man who is God could be, in which this case, Jesus Christ is both man and God. So to any other religion, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, anyone that says Jesus doesn't claim to be God. This is a prime example that we see in scripture that Jesus here is stating that he's God. He references himself. He says, I'm the son of man. I'm the title that is given to the Messiah in Daniel 7. That one, that's me. And these Jews at the time, would know exactly what he's talking about. And immediately, verse 25, and immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home glorifying God. And amazement
Starting point is 00:14:14 seized them all and they glorified God and were filled with all saying we have seen extraordinary things today. Now we're going to move to another passage here, which I love. Jesus is about to call Levi. Levi is Matthew the tax collector. And we're about to see this passage. It says, after this went out, after this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi. We've watched Jesus just call some Joe Shmo fishermen. We've watched Jesus call a leper and heal a leper. He's healed a paralytic. He's messed with the Pharisees.
Starting point is 00:14:44 And now he's about to call on someone else that people hate. A tax collector. Everyone hates a tax collector. They often took more than they were supposed to. They were nasty people, dealt with money. He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. And he goes, follow me. He says, follow me.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his house. And there was a large company of tax collectors and other reclining at the table with them. So everyone that society deemed as a sinner, everyone that the Pharisees said, hey, you guys are awful. Yeah, they were all sitting at the table with Jesus. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at him at his disciples saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus answered them, those who are well have no need of a physician.
Starting point is 00:15:27 But those who are sick, I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repent. man what a beautiful calling from Jesus Christ why would someone refuse why would someone refuse the healing of a doctor well number one they probably wouldn't think that they were sick and that's what sin does to us we convince ourselves that we're okay that we're not in need of an outside source to help us
Starting point is 00:15:50 but blessed or the poor in spirit means that we recognize that we're spiritually bankrupt and that we can't help ourselves that we need someone greater than ourselves to help us and Jesus here is saying look I didn't come for people who were prideful who thought that they were helpful. Like I came for those who were recognized
Starting point is 00:16:07 that they are in need of me. I came for those who are spiritually bankrupt and those who want to put their faith and trust in me. And then we're about to end this passage with a question about fasting. And then they said to him, the disciples of John fasted often and offer prayers and so do the disciples of the Pharisees,
Starting point is 00:16:22 but yours eat and drink. So now they're saying, oh look, we fast. And some other people's disciples fast, but you're not fasting right now. He's saying this because they're at dinner. The Pharisees are. and Jesus said to them, can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? Now he's pointing it, he's making this specific to the time period here.
Starting point is 00:16:42 He's saying, look, when you look at a wedding feast, right, no one's fasting. The feast is a specific declaration and expression of joy when you're eating and dining with the bride and the bridegroom. It's a beautiful time of celebration. He's saying you're not going to fast right there. And he says the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them. and then they will fast in those days. And he also told them a parable. No one tears a piece from a new garment
Starting point is 00:17:07 and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new one and the piece from the new will not match the old. Now we're about to get the catchphrase. New wine skins. He says, no one puts new wine into old wine skins. If he does, the new wine will burst.
Starting point is 00:17:21 The skins. And it will be spilled and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put in new fresh wine skins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new for he says the old is good now look this is what jesus christ is saying he's saying look i'm not coming to abolish the old testament law you're being he's like you're you're you're trying to hold a cage of rules over here you're trying to hold a cage of religion around these guys he says look i'm the new wine skins i'm not coming to abolish it but i've come to fulfill it
Starting point is 00:17:47 when i die on the cross and resurrect jesus christ is going to fulfill all the old testament law and now there's some new commandments and here's the new commandments that jesus is going to give we're going to see later on to love the lord your god with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. Because when Jesus Christ actually fulfills all the Old Testament law through his death and resurrection, and he commands people to love the Lord your God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength, by loving Jesus with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with all of your strength, you're actually going to naturally submit yourselves to the teachings and commandments of Christ.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Not because you have to to follow some strict cage of religion rules. No, you do it because you love him. And you do it because you've watched the supernatural life of Jesus transform yours and you want to listen and obey everything that he has to say. What a powerful chapter there in Luke 5 where we watch Jesus mobilizing his earthly ministry calling some disciples, healing the sick, healing the paralytic, and actually confronting the Pharisees and saying, hey, look, listen, you guys are old wineskins, but I'm actually about to bring and fulfill the kingdom of God here. I'm going to fulfill the law. I'm not abolishing it. I'm going to fulfill it. And look, I am here now. He says there will come a time where they need to fast. But right now, the bridegroom,
Starting point is 00:19:01 which is me, he's saying, I am the bridegroom. I'm here. I'm here with them. And they're going to spend time with me because there's going to come a time when I'm taken away from them. And when I'm taken away from them, they will fast on behalf of people. They will fast to meet with me. But while I'm here in person, they will dine with me. They will feast with me. And they will get to know me. And I love the picture of the dinner table. We're going to see this in Luke chapter 24. But there's power at the dinner table where Jesus and Luke chapter 24 actually opens the disciples minds to the power of scripture because he had resurrected it's going to be amazing when we talk about it guys I pray Luke chapter 5 has encouraged you guys I can't want to be with you guys tomorrow for Luke
Starting point is 00:19:38 chapter 6 guys go to jesus in the street dot org slash tickets to get your live podcast show tickets I love you guys see you guys tomorrow
