Now, let's go into Luke chapter 8.
Now we're going to see Luke open up chapter 8 here with talking about women accompanying Jesus.
He said soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages,
proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God,
a great description of the ministry of Jesus.
He is proclaiming and bringing the good news of God.
And the 12 were with him.
And also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities,
Mary called Magdalene from whom seven demons had gone out,
Joanna, the wife of Chusa, Herod's household manager,
and Susanna and many others who provided for them out of their means.
Now, this is interesting that Jesus is traveling with some women as well
because he had a different perspective of women than the religious leaders did at the time.
Alongside that, it also says that many others who provided for them out of their means.
So this is saying that Jesus could have produced as much money as he wanted, as much food as he wanted because he was God,
but no, it shows him in his humanity relying on the servanthood of others to provide for the ministry that they're accomplishing.
So I think it's super powerful just shows the humanity of Jesus Christ here.
Now we're about to read the parable of the sower, and I'm going to break it down using the scripture below it.
Oftentimes, this is a beautiful thing. Like, I love getting to preach the word of God, but oftentimes, to understand scripture that Jesus says, we can just read some verses afterwards.
And he tells us what's going on. So we're going to do that.
The parable of the sower, and when a great crowd was gathering a people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable.
A sower went out to sow a seed, and as he sowed, some fell along the path and was,
trampled underfoot and the birds of the air devoured it and some fell on the rock and as it grew up
it withered away because it had no moisture and some fell among the thorns and the thorns grew up with it and
choked it and some fell into good soil and grew and it yielded a hundredfold as he said these things he called
out he who has ears to hear let him hear when jesus whenever jesus says let anyone who has ears to
hear let him hear he's saying if any of you are humble enough to listen to the teachings and apply it to
your life then do so now some might say well what does that parable mean we're
about to jump down into it, but why does Jesus speak in parables?
If you guys remember, I made a podcast about this earlier, but it's a sifting mechanism.
It separates the people that just wanted the benefits of the kingdom without the king,
and it separates the people that wanted Jesus for the king himself, who wanted deeper intimacy with him.
Because those of them that showed up to Jesus that just wanted healing, that just wanted to experience him for a moment,
and he spoke in a parable, they would go, oh, whatever, and then they would walk away.
But like the disciples, they would go, hey, Jesus, what did you mean when you said this?
They wrestle with him.
We're about to watch him say that.
It says, and when the disciples asked him about this parable, he said, to you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God.
But for others, they're in parables so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not understand.
Now, the parable is this. The seed is the word of God. So Jesus is saying this is what's going to happen when you preach the word of God.
The ones along the path are those who have heard. Then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved.
There is a spiritual battle going on for someone's soul. So the seed that,
that was sown amongst the path and it was trampled underfoot and the birds came and devoured,
it's Satan immediately took that seed that was taken.
Like, man, there's a war for that soul.
And that just makes me go, man, I wonder how much damage that person's going to do for the kingdom of God
when Satan can't take that seed and it's just going to plant and water and grow in that person's life.
Then it says, and the ones on the rock are those who when they hear the word, they receive it with joy.
But these have no root and they believe for a while.
And in the time of testing, they fall away.
I remember at church camp, I would go to church camp in the summer, and I was giving my life to Jesus
every summer. I was at the altar every summer. Your boy was at the altar every summer.
And it was because at church camp, you went a week of just a super hyper emotional environment,
malnourished because of the food. And the last night, the music was hitting just right. And I was out there
giving my life to Jesus, and I was receiving it with joy. But it was like, take it back to your schools.
And I was like, no, I will not take it back to my school. No, I will not share Jesus with people.
It's like, look, you receive it with joy. But when it was like, take it back to your schools. And I was like,
but when times get hard, the time of testing, they fall away.
It has no depth.
I think a lot of us fall for that.
He's saying, like, that's going to happen to a lot of people.
And as for those that fell among the thorns,
there are those who hear it, but as they go on their way,
they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of the life
and their fruit does not mature.
Saying like those that get distracted by riches,
the love for money, those that get distracted by sin,
their faith is actually going to choke out.
They're going to stop producing fruit.
And then he says, as for that in good soil,
that's those who hear the word hold fast in an honest and good heart and bear fruit with its patience
that's when the seed falls on good soil that waters and produces fruits a beautiful thing
verse 16 no one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed but puts it on a stand
so that those who enter may see the light man when have you ever been changed by the goodness of
god and thought i'm not going to tell anyone or thought man i'm just like i'm going to not do anything or not going to be
bold, man, our boldness, our love, the reason we forgive, our servanthood, our actions are
the byproduct of the light that lives inside of us. If Jesus is the light and the light lives
inside of us, that means everywhere we go, we are a light and it is accessible to anyone.
There's the spirit of wherever the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom and if the Spirit
of the Lord lives in you, then freedom is accessible to anyone anywhere at all times.
That's powerful. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything
secret that will not be known and come to light. Everything comes to the light.
Take care then how you hear. For to the one who has, for to the one who has, more will be given.
And from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.
Jesus' mother and brothers. I love this passage. Then his mother and his brothers came to him,
but they could not reach him because of the crowd. Who would have thought? You know, in their right mind,
most people think, oh, well, it's his mother and his brothers. They would have had special treatment because they're mothers and brothers.
but even Jesus' family, he shows no partiality to.
What a man, he's just a man of his word.
And he was told, your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
desiring to see you, but he answered to them,
my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.
Those who are followers of me.
Those who obey my word.
Those are a part of my family.
Those are the people are part of my family.
So that's an encouragement for you.
Like, the reason we obey his word is not because we have to,
but because we want to, because we love him.
And those that obey his word are a part of his family.
Jesus calms a storm.
love this story. Man, you guys need to be encouraged with your faith, man. How many times we got to
understand Jesus is a promise keeper. He's faithful. That's why in the covenant with Abraham, God is the
only one standing in the place of the covenant because he's like, you're a man, you're going to fail,
but I'm God. I can't fail. God is a promise keeper. If he speaks something to you through
scripture over your life, he's a promise keeper, it will come to pass. So I think this story is a
testament to our faith in Jesus Christ. And at this time, the disciples are still trying to figure out
who Jesus is. They've seen him.
him do some miracles and they're like, we've never seen anyone like you before.
One day he got into a boat with his disciples and he said to them, let us go across to the
other side of the lake. So they set out and as they sailed he fell asleep and a windstorm came down
on the lake and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him saying,
Master, master, we are perishing. And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves and they ceased
and there was a calm. He said to them, where is your faith? As they were afraid and they marveled
saying to one another, who then is this, that even he who commands the winds and waters, they obey him.
Why does Jesus tell the disciples, where is your faith? It's not because he's trying to scold them or
because he's being petty. It's because before they went on the boat, he said, hey, we're going to
the other side. It's not, hey, we might be getting there. It's no, it's a guarantee. We're going to
the other side. What he spoke is true. And so he's trying to tell the disciples, listen, if I tell us,
tell you guys something's going to happen, it's going to happen. It doesn't matter the story.
storms of life that come your way, the trials that come your way. If I speak something that's
going to happen, it's going to happen. He says, you got to trust in my word. And so when
Jesus speaks something into your life, no matter the trials and the storms and the hard times that
come, if Jesus has spoken something through his word, it will come to pass. It will come to pass.
So Jesus is saying, trust in my word here. We got two final beautiful stories here in Luke
chapter eight i believe yeah two final stories is powerful jesus heals a man with a demon now and he says
then he sailed to the country of garrisons which is the opposite of galilee when jesus had stepped out on the land
there met him a man from the city who had demons so this man sought jesus out for a long time he had worn
no clothes and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs when he saw jesus he cried out and fell down
before him and said with a loud voice what have you to do with me jesus son of the most high god i beg
you do not torment me for he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man for many a time
it had seized him he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles but he would break the bonds
and be driven by the demon into the desert then jesus asked him what's your name and the demon said
legion for many demons that entered this guy had multiple demons in him but they begged him not to command
them to depart into the abyss what is the abyss they're talking about referencing revelation 9-11
and this is the bottomless pit that Satan and his demons are destined to when Jesus returns a second time.
He's like, guys, please don't send this here.
Please don't.
Now, a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these.
So he gave them permission.
Then the demons came out of the man, entered the pigs.
The demons have to obey Jesus Christ in the name of Jesus.
They tremble at his name.
And the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
The response of the pigs, because the demons entered them,
shows the destructive nature of demons.
The demons enter the pigs,
and they run down a hill, and they drowned themselves.
Like, it's intense,
but it shows the destructive nature of these demons.
When the herdsmen saw what had happened,
they fled and told it in the city,
and in the country,
then the people went out to see what had happened,
and they came to Jesus,
and found the man from whom the demons had gone,
sitting at the feet of Jesus' clothed,
and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
And those who had seen it told them
how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
Then all the people of the surrounding countries of Jerosines
had asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear.
So he got into a boat and returned.
The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him,
but Jesus sent him away saying, return to your home and declare how much God has done from you.
So now we see a different stance where instead of Jesus saying, hey, don't tell anyone about this.
He goes, actually go home and tell people about this because Jesus is now in his earthly ministry.
And he went away proclaiming through the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
Now we're about to enter the final story here in Luke chapter 8.
let's prepare our hearts here because I think this story is so powerful
and can teach us a lot about hungering for the things of God.
Jesus heals both a woman with a bleeding disease and a man named Gyrus's daughter.
Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him for they were all waiting for him.
And there was a man named Gyrus who was a ruler of the synagogue,
a man of esteemed respect, high authority and high power.
This guy's at the synagogue.
and he has a daughter who is sick and is 12 years old.
Okay?
And he falls at the feet of Jesus.
He implored him to come to his house.
So this man of high respect, high authority,
and a Jew, a ruler in the synagogue.
A synagogue wasn't just like a place of worship.
I mean, this would be like a central point for the people.
He falls down before all these people who were trying to figure out who Jesus is and goes,
Jesus, Jesus, you're the Christ.
Come, help my daughter.
For you had only one daughter about.
12 years of age and she was dying. Keep in mind of the age of this girl. As Jesus went, he was going.
The people pressed around him and there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for 12 years.
This woman who had a bleeding disease for 12 years had the bleeding disease for the same amount of time this child had been alive.
She had spent all her living on physicians and no one could heal her. She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of his garment and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
She thought that if she could just touch Jesus Christ, that he would be healed. She would be healed.
that's beautiful faith.
And Jesus said, who was that touched me?
Now you've got to keep in mind.
Jesus crowded me and pushed by so many different people.
But because of this woman's faith and she experienced the healing power of Jesus Christ by his touch,
he knew that power went out of it.
When all denied it, Peter said, master the crowd surround you and are pressing on you.
But Jesus said, someone touched me for I perceived that power had gone out from me.
And you have to keep in mind, this woman also did this in secret because she would have been deemed unclean.
Like if people knew about her bleeding disease, they were not allowed.
out to be touched by her because they were like she's got blood on her she's bleeding she's
unclean so she probably did this in secret too to protect jesus because she's like man people think
i'm unclean if they know i touch jesus i would have made him unclean but i know if i touch him he's
going to make me clean and when the woman saw that she was not hidden she came trembling and falling down
before him in the synagogue in this public area that all these people are going to see and the presence
of all people was she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed and he looked at her
someone that people had written off as unclean, gross.
He looked at her and said,
Daughter, your faith, this made you well.
Go in peace.
And while he was still speaking,
someone from the ruler's house came and said,
your daughter is dead.
You're not in trouble the teacher anymore.
So keep in mind,
the second the woman gets healed
is the second that Jiris' daughter is pronounced dead.
Okay, isn't it crazy?
For 12 years,
this little girl's been alive,
and for that same amount of time,
this lady has had the bleeding disease.
And the second that she gets healed
was the second that his daughter is pronounced dead isn't interesting your daughter is dead do not
trouble the teacher anymore but jesus on hearing this answered him do not fear only believe and she will be
well because even death is no is like no match for jesus even death can't conquer jesus jesus
conquered death both in his earthly ministry raising people from the dead and on the cross he defeated it
He defeated the very thing that is our punishment that separates us from him.
Sin and death separate us from him.
And he came to the house.
He allowed no one to enter with him except Peter and John and James, his closest friends
and the father and the mother of the child.
And all were weeping and mourning for her.
Now keep in mind, oftentimes in this time period when someone died,
they would literally have professional mourners like outside of someone's house mourning for them.
And Jesus is probably confused.
He's like, why did you tell them to come here?
I told you I was coming.
I think that.
Like, why are they here?
And he literally tells them,
do not weep, for she's not dead.
She's just sleeping.
And they laughed at him,
knowing that she was dead.
But taking her by the hand,
he called saying,
child arise,
and her spirit returned,
and she got up at once,
and he directed that something
should be given to her to eat.
And her parents were amazed,
but he charged them to tell no one
what had happened.
What a beautiful chapter in Luke chapter 8.
We see many things,
and I love how it closes out with this
because it shows us
that even death is no match for Jesus.
that even comes down to our spiritual health
man before i knew jesus i was spiritually bankrupt i was probably the lost ever i was i was lost
in myself i was lost in the world i was doing things i shouldn't have been doing i was on a i was
just on a quest for love and i remember being on this quest for love and filling my heart with
everything but jesus and feeling so lost and so dirty and thought i was never good enough for
Jesus. And yet my spiritual bankruptcy was no match for Jesus. Because when he died on the cross,
he's sitting there on the cross going, man, Bryce, I'm thinking about you. I love you. I'm for you and
I'm going to die for you. And I just want you to know that you can be clean. And he looks at me and he
says, Bryce, no matter what you've done, it's as if you've never done it because of my blood.
The thing that made the woman unclean is where Jesus's blood makes you,
and I clean and wipes our slate as if nothing has ever happened.
