slash proverbs and download a free PDF today. Let's read Proverbs 13 together. A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. From the fruit of his mouth, a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. A lot of these proverbs are echoed multiple times,

and it's good. I hear the same advice over and over again to know the importance of it. Whoever guards his mouth, preserves his life. He who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Wise and good words can actually preserve and add to life. To speak too much usually means we're trying to find trouble or we will find trouble when we speak too much,

but wisdom will actually guard the mouth from saying things that we shouldn't say. The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. It isn't, listen to that, the soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing. It's not that the lazy man lacks desire. The lazy people actually wish for things, but they don't have. have anything because they cannot or will not apply themselves to do the work required to make desires achievable. Right. And so diligence in spiritual things leads to spiritual riches and blessings the same way diligence and physical things often reap the benefit. Diligence and physical things often lead to a physical reward. So, you know, notice how like God provides the

worm, but the bird has to get up and do the work to go get the worm in the same way. Like God can provide opportunity. If you want to go to the gym and get fit, the opportunity, the opportunity. is maybe there's a gym membership cheap or maybe you have weights or maybe you can do push-ups but if you don't apply yourself if you don't actually do the work then you're actually going to reap the benefit I mean reap the effect of not doing the hard work the righteous hate falsehood but the wicked brings shame and disgrace righteousness guards him whose way is blameless but sin overthrows the wicked one pretends to be rich yet has nothing another pretends to be poor yet has great wealth.

One pretends to be rich yet has nothing. What does that mean? One may make themselves physically rich in this lifetime, but then when they pass away, they realize that they were spiritually broke, and all that wealth does absolutely nothing. The ransom of a man's life is his wealth, but a poor man hears no threat.

The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out. By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom. Verse 11, wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. You know, there's something weird, like, you know, from the natural perspective about get rich quick schemes.

That's just weird, right? You know? But hard work actually does something to man. Hard work actually prepares for the long haul. Verse 12. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself.

Whoa. Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself. Your life will crumble if you're not. not found it on the word of God, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life that one may turn away from the snares of death. God's word is going to be and is currently a continual source of life for all who will receive it. Okay. Good sense wins favor, verse 15, but the way of the treacherous is their ruin. Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.

A wicked messenger. Wait, a fool of flaunt his folly. Hold on a second. and why is it that people brag about stupidity? Why is it that people in today's society brag and exalt are proud at the fact that they're making dumb and stupid decisions? Why do we do that? It's because we want attention. But when we realize that we already have the father's attention without having to work for it and we have the father's self

without having to work for it, then we don't exalt ourselves in pride, but we act with knowledge and the wisdom of God like it says the prudent man does in verse 16. 17, a wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever he has reproof his other is honored. There's something, you know, interesting. Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction. You know, oftentimes we forget about the practicality and common sense of the spiritual daily life of you and me. Oftentimes, if we can just apply common sense to our lives with the Word of God, we'll see fruit.

A desire fulfilled, verse 19, is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from, from evil as an abomination to fools. When our desires are fulfilled, especially when they're accomplished through hard work, discipline, and sacrifice, this is sweet to the soul and brings a great satisfaction. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the satisfaction of reaping the harvest of your discipline and hard work.

Verse 20, whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. It's important. Who do you surround yourself with? Show me your closest five friends, and I'll show you where you're going to end up in 10 years. I love that piece of advice.

because good company and good companions bring much wisdom to life. Paul says bad company corrupts good morals and iron sharpens iron. If you use any other, the Bible says that iron sharpens iron, and if you use any other substance to try to sharpen iron, it actually doles the blade. And if you're not surrounding yourself with people that challenge you and sharpen you and push you to become better in every aspect of life physically and spiritually, then you're actually doling and callousing your own heart to the move of God in your life.

So surround yourself with good company. Disaster pursue sinners, verse 21, but the righteous are rewarded with good. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous. The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept the way through injustice. Verse 24, whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. Let's talk about that. Whoever spares the rod hates his son. Okay?

the one who refuses to discipline his child may feel like they're acting out of compassion for the child. But Solomon is saying, if you're not willing to call out your child and teach him when things are wrong and discipline him when things are wrong so he can learn it's right,

it could come across naturally that he hates his son because he's not willing to do hard things occasionally to teach his son that things are wrong. And so sometimes we get mad at God when we get put through trials and things like that, but sometimes God allows things for us

so that it produces character and endurance. The point we're making is, is that justice is necessary and needs to be served in order to produce good character. Verse 25, to close it out, the righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want.

Whenever you pursue the word of God and his righteousness, you leave satisfied and fulfilled, but an urgency to want more of him.
