Starting point is 00:00:30 fall. What's going on, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Bryce Carver podcast. I'm Bryce and today we're on Proverbs 22 out of the 31 chapters in Proverbs. Let's break it down. Let's get into it. Verse one, a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches and favor is
Starting point is 00:00:46 better than silver or gold. So wealth can come in many forms. Verse one is telling us right now. The wealth of respect and excellent character being recognized is valuable beyond riches. So you're saying a good reputation being recognized by your excellent character and respect is of high value.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Verse two. The rich and the poor meet together. The Lord is the maker of them all. There's no amount of money in your bank account that makes you less valuable than someone else. We're all of the equal value because of the price that God puts on us is his own life. And we're made in his image. Verse three, the prudence sees danger and hides himself with a simple go on and suffer for it. The reward for humility and fear of the love. Lord is riches and honor and life. The person who has humility and fears the Lord is well on their way to the path of wisdom. They can expect blessings, certainly spiritual blessings, but the reward for humility and the fear of God is blessings from the Lord. Thorns and snares of the way of the

Now verse 6 is really interesting. Children need training and the job of the parent is not to just let them grow up in any circumstance or particular way, but to train them up in righteousness.
Starting point is 00:02:10 And this is key that verse 6 is saying, even when he is old, he will not depart from it. When a child is trained up in the proper way, even if they may rebel for a season or leave for a season, they will return. Proverbs 22 6 says. Verse 7,
Starting point is 00:02:26 rules over the poor and the borrower is the slave of the lender. Whoever so's injustice will reap calamity and the rod of his fury will fail. Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. God will bless the one who is generous to others. And one way we can express our generosity, verse 9 tells us, is giving to the needy and the poor. Verse 10, drive out a scoffer and strife will go out and quarreling and abuse will cease. He who loves purity of heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king as his friend. Inner purity often shows itself through gracious filled words. Verse 12. The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the traitor.
Starting point is 00:03:14 The sluggard says there is a line outside. I shall be killed in the streets. The mouth of the forbidden woman is a deep pit. He with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him. Children are not born morally neutral. Everyone is born with a sinful nature, but physical correction, when properly and wisely applied,
Starting point is 00:03:38 can help drive away the child's inborn foolishness. Verse 16, whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth or give to the rich will only come to poverty. Now, verse 17 on, we're going to read more nuggets of wisdom. incline your ear and hear the words of the wise and apply your heart to my knowledge for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you what's the reward for applying wisdom of your life pleasantness if all of them are ready on your lips that you may trust that your trust may be in the lord
Starting point is 00:04:07 i have made them known to you today even i have made them known to you today even to you true wisdom makes us more dependent on god in this call in verses 17 through 19 we've seen echoed throughout all the proverbs trust in the wisdom of the lord trust the lord trust the lord incline your ear and heart to understanding. Verse 20. Have I not written to you for 30 sayings of counsel and knowledge to make you know what is right and true that you may give a true answer to those who sent you? Do not rob the poor because he is poor or crush the afflicted at the gate.
Starting point is 00:04:38 For the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them. Make no friendship with a man given to anger nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. A person who often can't control their anger displays bad character, and Proverbs 22 versus 24 through 25 tells us that a man who has no self-control and no control over their anger is bad company. And if you befriend an angry man someone that can't control their temper, you could potentially learn his ways.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Verse 26, be not one of those who gives pledges who puts up security for debts. If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you? Do not be responsible for the debts of other people. We've seen this echoed throughout scripture. Verse 28 and 29 to close us out. Do not move the ancient landmark that your fathers have set. Do you see a man skillful in his work?
Starting point is 00:05:35 He will stand before kings. He will not stand before obscure men. Wisdom pushes us and encourages us towards excellence. When we seek and apply the wisdom of God to our life, when we incline our ear and heart to the understanding of the Lord, it drives us to create discipline, good habits, and drives us to excellence.
