Starting point is 00:00:00 What's going on, guys. Welcome back to the Bryce Crawford podcast. I'm Bryce. I'm super excited for the second episode of the year. By the title, you already know, we're talking about the devil today because Satan is a doo-doo butt. I got on my Satan's a poo-poo head shirt, vintage Jesus T's on Instagram. He made like a reprint of this, and he sent me one a long time ago, and I love it. I wore it on my first red carpet experience ever in LA, and it's like a Getty Images picture on the internet. It's really funny. But I love this shirt, and it's true. Satan's a poo-poo-poo-ha. And a lot of people actually ask questions about Satan. They want to know who he is, how he operates, what's his origin story, temptation, how do we overcome temptation? And so I think this episode is going to bring a lot of clarity about how he works and how he operates. And I think it's just going to give you guys a lot of wisdom and insight on who he is. And we know that he's just a dummy. So I'm excited to talk about it. But before we get into it, I want to clarify something that a lot of people try to fight the devil.
Starting point is 00:00:57 but you don't actually have to fight the devil. The Bible says that we fight the fight of faith. So Jesus defeated the devil 2,000 years ago. So really, you're persistently pursuing God despite your circumstance. That brings so much comfort. Why would we want to fight someone that's already been defeated? You know, people that are in playoffs and sports teams don't play someone that's already lost. So we're not going to try to fight someone or defeat someone that's already been defeated.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Right? We're just going to fight the fight of faith. Every morning we wake up, we're going to lay our crown of pride down. And we're just going to say, Jesus, I want to serve. view. I want to love you well and I want to chase after you. And so we don't have to fight the devil. That's so comforting. But we want to know who the devil is. We got we got to know what the word says. Who is the devil? Who is Satan? How does he operate? We're going to get into it. So these are some common names of who Satan is just so you can kind of get a background context.
Starting point is 00:01:44 You know, names define people. You know, words define people. So when we understand descriptions of Satan, then we can kind of understand how he's operating. The Bible calls Satan a destroyer, an enemy, a murderer, the father of lives, the father of lies, the evil one, the angel of the bottomless pit, the prince and power of the air, the god of this world. These names are ratchet. Bro, this dude's whack. They're calling him the destroyer. Revelation 9 says that he's the angel of the bottomless pit.
Starting point is 00:02:19 If he's the angel of the bottomless pit, why would I want to follow him until a hole he can't get out of? Right? That's what he's trying to do. The devil is trying to drag. you into a pit that you can't dig yourself out of. Which here's the truth. You can't dig yourself out of the pit. That's why Jesus came and died and resurrected to save you from that pit of your sin. So he's trying to drag you down with him.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Then you got the prince and the power of the air and the god of this world. It says it in Ephesians 2 and John 1231. Now this is really interesting because they call Satan the ruler of this world. And we're going to get into that a little bit later. But Luke 10 says that he's the enemy. It says, behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall hurt you. So the spirit of God inside of you actually trumps the devil. It actually stomps on him. It's prophecy. That's what the spirit of God is doing
Starting point is 00:03:08 inside of you. He's defeating the devil. He's already defeated the devil Jesus has, but now you've been given power to scramble and trump on serpents and scorpions. Murderer and father of lies. John 844, you are of the father, the devil. This is talking about unbelievers. When unbelievers, you You've got, you've basically got a spirit of the world inside of you before you give yourself to Jesus. So you're going to be influenced by who? The father of lies, the devil. And it says, and your will is to do your father's desires. You're the father of the devil.
Starting point is 00:03:40 He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth because there is no truth in him. That's powerful. That means that anything that the devil says is going to be completely contrary to what you should be following. Because Jesus says in that same passage in John 8 in that same passage, he says, and you know the truth and the truth will set you free. But it says in that same passage that the devil has no truth in him. So this is going to be really interesting when you're trying to listen to what voice to listen to. And we're going to talk about that later.
Starting point is 00:04:07 It's just so cool. And then it says when he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. So his character is to be a liar and a thief and to drag you down and to persuade you and influence you in all the wrong ways. And then he's called the evil one. Matthew 537 says all you need to say is simply yes or no anything beyond this comes from the evil one we can be influenced by two people we can be influenced by the devil or the spirit of god and it's very clear based on people's character who they're influenced by bro you can tell how people act and because people sin either follows right after them like you could tell if someone's a bad person
Starting point is 00:04:51 based on when you meet them or you can watch their character follow them right and so if we're influenced by the devil our character is going to follow us but if we're influenced by the spirit of God Then our character is going to follow us our eyes and our ears are the windows to our soul and so what we consume is what we become and if we're being influenced by the father of lies Then our character is going to reflect that but if we're influenced by the spirit of God then our character is going to reflect that because we're made in the image of God and we want to be able to follow in that now I want to go back and highlight something about Satan being talked about as the ruler of this one world because we have to be careful because then people think like oh is he a god the bible references him as the god of this world but we need to understand that god is still sovereign over this world so god is the ultimate ruler over the universe over everything but he has allowed satan to have power in this world and reign in this world what does that mean he has power to influence people he has power to tempt people
Starting point is 00:05:51 now we're going to go into it later but we have to be careful and understand that satan doesn't have deity over God, Satan will never be higher than God. God is still sovereign, but we need to clarify that. Now, here's a background context on who Satan is and who he was. His name was actually Lucifer, and if we read Isaiah 14, we can know that Satan used to be an angel. Satan used to be an angel with God, and not only that, but Ezekiel 28 actually acknowledges Satan as a cherub. Cherub. Cherub, I might have said that wrong, but a cherub. And this type of angel was one of the high angels in the hierarchy of angels. So before Satan fell, he was actually an angel with a lot of a power and authority. So he was right under God. And we have to understand like Satan had to have
Starting point is 00:06:38 been a really powerful angel if he convinced a third of the angels to rebel against God. So this dude must have had some authority in heaven, but he was under God. And it was the influence of wanting to be higher than God that got him because it says in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 12 that, Lucifer has had beauty, wisdom, and he was perfect like, is what the Bible says. He had so much beauty, so much wisdom. He looked perfect, but his pride got in the way. And his pride then led to a rebellion, which caused him and a third of the angels to fall. And so Satan's army is a bunch of fallen angels, people that were led into rebellion.
Starting point is 00:07:20 This is so interesting. This is so interesting. Listen, this blew my mind when I was thinking about this. the reason that Satan can't be redeemed for his sin was because he sinned outside of time. He was an angel with free will and because he was an angel existing outside of time and he sinned outside of time, then his punishment can't be paid for. But because we're human beings and we're finite and we're limited and we sin, we can be saved from our sin. But Satan can't and he's being punished for eternity because of it.
Starting point is 00:07:52 So now we live in this finite world and this physical body where even though we're sinners, Christ died for us and he can save us from our sin. So we get this lifetime to choose Jesus or not. So do we want to be influenced by the Spirit of God or do we want to be influenced by the Father of Lies? That's something that you've got to reflect on because at the end of the day we just got the choice whether we want to seek Jesus or not. Now I love that. I think that's so interesting that Satan can't be redeemed because he's sin outside time. That's so crazy. This is how Lucifer operates.
Starting point is 00:08:25 This is what he does. This is what the Bible says. He can't attack God. Listen, listen to this. Satan can't attack God so he's going to attack people. That's what he's going to do. Satan can't attack God. He can't become more powerful than God.
Starting point is 00:08:40 So he's going to attack his people and try to influence him. His goal is going to be to drag you down with him in the pit that he's dug for himself. So he's going to try to drag you down with him. He comes to steal, kill, kill, and destroy him. destroy. So the ministry of Satan is to steal, kill, and destroy. But the ministry of Jesus is reconciliation. Which one you want to be a part of? Like, which one do you want to be a part of? You can be influenced by either. Like we said earlier, do you want to be influenced by the Father of Lies? You want to be influenced by the Spirit of God. I'm going to keep reiterating that question because I want to
Starting point is 00:09:17 challenge you and I want to challenge your spirit. And the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4 that the devil blinds the eyes of unbelievers. And so when Ezekiel 36, it says that God gives us a new heart, and he removes our heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh. So the spirit of God can actually soften the heart of unbelievers. So when you go out, like we talked about in the last episode, with the Holy Spirit, with the Holy Spirit, when you share your faith, and you use the gifts of the Spirit, it can soften the hearts of unbelievers
Starting point is 00:09:45 and begin to peel off a few scales of their heart. And then as you share the gospel with them and the good news, it'll totally set them free. Now, we got to look at temptation in the Bible and how people handled it because this is really interesting. And there's a lot of Bible verses that talk about temptation. And we're even going to go into another episode later on in the podcast talking about freedom from sin. And a lot of this stuff correlates with each other. But the first person I want to highlight is Job.
Starting point is 00:10:09 Job was a man after God's own heart. Job was a righteous man. Job would even sacrifice animals on behalf of his children because he believed in the holiness and righteousness of God so much. and he had everything. He had the wife. He had the kids. He had the livestock. He had the money.
Starting point is 00:10:25 And Satan comes before God and is like, bro, he's only following you because you give him all this stuff. And God says you can tempt him. Just don't touch his health. And so he tempts him. Job's still following him. Then Satan comes back and he's like, bro, he's just following you because he's healthy. So then he strips everything away from him. His kids, his health, he's sick and everything.
Starting point is 00:10:47 And Job, I love this story because Job's friends were trying to. influence him to give up on God because he didn't have anything, but he persistently pursued God despite his circumstance. And we see how fate trumped feeling. Your feelings are good servants, but not good masters. So when you feel like not following God, you have to seek out the truth of who he is and his character because God always stays true to himself.
Starting point is 00:11:13 It is impossible for God to go outside of his character. And so we have to stay true to what the Bible says and what the truth about his character is so that we can persistently pursue him despite our circumstance. Then you got Jesus in the desert. Jesus being God fast for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert and Satan himself comes and tries to tempt him.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Now when you read this story in the gospels, we notice that Satan twists him with what's the word? What's the word? He tries to tempt him with perverted scripture. That's the word. Satan perverts everything good. So he uses perverted scripture and how does Jesus combat it with actual scripture?
Starting point is 00:11:55 So what Satan was given him wasn't real scripture and he combats it with the truth. So how do you fight the lies with the truth? Because as we read earlier in the Bible, there's no truth in his character. But Jesus's character is nothing but truth. And if we have the word of God, then it is our weapon against the lies of the enemy. It is our weapon against him. And so he's going to use perverted scripture to try to come after Jesus. And he goes, no, here's what the word of God says.
Starting point is 00:12:20 And he stands firm. And because he stands firm, he overcomes that temptation. It's really powerful. And then we look at Adam and Eve in the garden. This is so cool. Adam and Eve in the garden. Satan tempts them with the fruit. But not just any fruit.
Starting point is 00:12:31 It wasn't the fruit that got Adam and Eve. It was the fact that they could be God. That's what Satan said. He says, the reason that he's not letting you eat from this tree of the knowledge of good and evil is because you can become greater than God. How did Satan fall? Because he wanted to be greater than God. He didn't like being the second best.
Starting point is 00:12:48 wanted to be the best you want to get higher than God that's crazy so the same thing that got satan to fall is the same thing that got adam and eve to eat the fruit in the garden it's kind of bonkers and what do they do they eat the fruit and then shame guilt and fear enters in and they try to hide themselves they hide from god and the first thing that god does in that story in genesis three isn't why did you do that he says where are you because at the end of the day god is more concerned about communion with him and reconciling you back to him than calling you out for that because listen Satan knows your name and calls you by your sin but Jesus knows your sin and calls you by your name he gives you identity in him while Satan's trying to make that old man creep back up on you
Starting point is 00:13:30 Satan is a total do-do butt bro like we don't want nothing to do with that joker he's he's so stupid why would I want anything to do with him and I made this video on tick talk a while back where I was talking about how if I got in the same room with Satan I would totally annihilate him bro I would beat the living snot out of him because I hate him and someone commented they were like aren't we supposed to love our enemies like bro this is totally different we're loving our enemies in this finite universe but satan's agenda nothing is going to change about satan's character nothing can change about his character he's come to steal kill and destroy and that's it that's all he's going to do he can't be redeemed but people can be redeemed so we can love people and know that god can change their heart but Satan's heart ain't changing so why would
Starting point is 00:14:12 i love that joker we don't we don't want anything to do with him he is a do-do-but now listen this Listen to this scripture. James 1 13 through 15 says let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God. For God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tempts no one. Verse 13. That's what it says. And a lot of people blame God for their temptations and their struggles. But the Bible says every good gift comes from God. And so temptation and sin comes from the devil. So when hard times come, people blame God for forcing the hard time or the temptation on them. But this scripture says God doesn't tempt anyone and God doesn't cause bad things to happen to people. Satan is the cause of sin and temptation and bad things.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Now the difference is, is God can allow things to happen to us. Now, why? We'll see in verse 14 and 15, but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires, then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin and sin when it's fully grown brings forth death. So sin births death in us. Now, the reason that God doesn't cause sin, but he can. allow it is because we see in James if you keep reading in James we notice that the testing of our faith produces endurance so God can allow things to happen to us to produce endurance in our faith and now listen to this
Starting point is 00:15:29 scripture bro bro bro God be dropping some fire bars through people first corinthians 10 13 no temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man this is so comforting because there's no new tricks that Satan has up his sleeve. Everything that Satan does now, he's been doing for hundreds and thousands of years. So hypothetically, when you feel alone in your temptation and sin, you can be reconciled not only to Jesus because he bore all sin on the cross, but people around you have been going through the same stuff you've been going through. You might meet people that are going through the same thing because he has no new tricks. So the temptation and sin that's thrown your way, there are other people that have gone through that so you don't have to feel alone. That's so comforting. God is faithful, and he will not let you
Starting point is 00:16:13 to be tempted beyond your ability. But with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape. Everything you're tempted with, you have the power to say no to. There is no excuse where you could say, oh, I just couldn't say no to it. This scripture says that we have the power to say no to everything because God provides a way of escape, even if it's a hard no, because sometimes our flesh is like drawn to sin. But when the flesh is weak, what does Jesus say? The spirit is willing.
Starting point is 00:16:40 And if the spirit of God is inside of you, he can give you the strength. strength to say no when it's hard for your flesh to say no. But every temptation thrown our way, we could say no to. That's powerful. That makes me want to fall out. That's crazy. Like what? That gives me so much comfort and peace, knowing that I can say no to everything that's thrown my way. Now, this is a cool analogy here because we can look at this in a very interesting way. It's almost like that cartoon from Looney Tunes where you got the devil and the angel on one shoulder. Because there's two voices. You got the voice of the accuser and you got the voice of the advocate The advocate is the helper, the Holy Spirit.
Starting point is 00:17:16 And the accuser accuses, condemns. That's why in Corinthians, it talks about the difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. Worldly sorrow says, oh, no, God's coming. I got to run and hide like Adam and Eve. But godly sorrow says, oh, no, God's coming. I need to bring my sorrow to him. Right? And so the accuser is going to say, no, you need to hide.
Starting point is 00:17:35 No, you can't go to God. No, you can't confess your sin to other people. No, don't do this. Or it's going to bring that judgmental voice inside of, oh, look at them. they're so ugly or oh they've done that thing you don't need to hang out with them oh you've done this the voice of the accuser but the advocate says love keeps no record of wrong love them meet them where they're at love stands in the way of evil you've been redeemed clean pure and made righteous in my sight I love you my son I love you my daughter that's the difference between the voice of the accuser
Starting point is 00:18:03 and the voice of the advocate because like I said earlier Satan knows your name and calls you by your sin but Jesus knows your sin and calls you by your name who you want to listen to and Jesus says, my sheep hear me and know my voice. And so as we build that muscle of listening to Jesus' voice and reading the word, our mind is going to become more sharpened to the Spirit of God. Ephesians 2, 4 through 6 says, but God being rich in mercy because of the great love which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Now this is dope, and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. The second you give your life to Jesus, your spirit is seated with Christ in the heavenly places. The second you get born again, your spirit is seated with him in the heavenly places. And what Satan's going to try to do with the voice of the accuser is he's going to try to let that old man, your old sin, creep up on you. He's going to try to shake that dead body. And when you believe the father of lies, when you believe that condemnation that he throws your way, you're shaking a dead body. But Jesus gives you new life and says, actually, that old man, your old self, is dead in the ground and there's not an enough. shovels I can dig it up. It's powerful, powerful. And so we know that when we give our life to Jesus,
Starting point is 00:19:19 we've been seated immediately in the highest of places, in the heavenly places with Jesus Christ. That's so powerful. So how do we combat temptation? 1 Peter 5-8, be sober-minded, be watchful. We have to say sober-minded. How do we stay sober-minded by the renewal of our mind? If we stay persistent in the Word of God and we pursue the presence of God, then we will continue to be sober-minded and will be watchful and aware. Ephesians 5 says, arise, awake, oh, sleeper. Because people be sleeping. People be sleeping, and then they get caught, and then they get tempted, and then they fall into sin. But if we're sober-minded and watchful and we're active
Starting point is 00:19:55 and our weapon is by our side at all times, then we can be ready for what Satan throws our way. And then it says, your adversary, the devil, prows around like a roaring line, like a roaring line. Satan isn't a roaring line. It says he's like one. Really, he's a kitty cat in the corner with a megaphone trying to amplify your issues in your ear, but those issues have been conquered by the finished work of the cross. That's powerful. That's powerful. Jesus says, my sheep hear my voice and know him.
Starting point is 00:20:24 So I want to end this episode by praying that the Spirit of God will sharpen his voice, that your mind and your spirit will be sharpened to the voice of the Holy Spirit. And I want to rebuke any assignment of the enemy coming against your way. I just want to ask God to do a work in your guys' heart. So Jesus, I thank you for everyone who's watching. and listening to this episode. God, will you just sharpen everyone's spirit and mind your voice? God, will you just give them a strength and a clarity to hear your voice over the voice of the
Starting point is 00:20:50 accuser? And God, I just rebuke any assignment of the enemy over anyone's life watching or listening in this. And we plead the blood of Jesus over their situation and their circumstance. God, will you comfort them? May the Prince of Peace surpass all over understanding through this audio, through this video podcast. God, will you just liquid love and your peace fill the room? fill the car, fill the gym, wherever they're listening to this episode.
