Welcome back to another episode of the Bryce Carver podcast. I'm Bryce. And today we're going to be talking about the seven deadly sins.

Why are we talking about these sins? Because they're the most common sins that we see within the human nature, no matter of the age. Drengy, you don't have to teach people to struggle with these issues. They just naturally struggle with them themselves. And honestly, to kickstart the seven deadly sins, I arguably want to point at the one that I believe Gen Z struggles with the most, and it's sloth. Sloth is laziness or passivity towards God. Whenever we're committing the sin of sloth, we're basically slapping God in the face and telling him that we're not grateful for the life that we're living. we're saying hey god i'm actually not grateful for the talents the treasures the gifts the things that

you've trusted me with so i'm going to be a little bit lazy i'm going to be a little bit slothful i'm going to be a little bit restful right and so all in proverbs a common theme that we see in proverbs and one of the reasons why i love proverbs so much is because it points to the life of an ant now you might be asked yourself like what why is the importance of an ant so important because Proverbs constantly says, look at the life of an ant. It has no chief, it has no ruler, yet it works hard. And that's why I love Tim Tebow's famous quote when he's like, I don't want to get to heaven well rested. Now, let me be very clear here, right? Like I honor the Sabbath. I love the Sabbath. I think the Sabbath is important. But I think oftentimes we can look at the Sabbath and make that an

excuse to be lazy. God has given us one life and breath inside of our lungs and talents, treasures, and gifts to do so. whenever we say, uh, I don't feel like doing this. So I'm going to put this talent and this treasure, this gift that God's giving me on the shelf right here and wait later, because I want to do that. We're being slothful and slapping him in the face. It says in Romans chapter 12, don't be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Whenever we're lazy, we're looking at God and saying, hey, I'm not grateful that you made me. I'm not grateful that you've trusted me with certain things, and I'm not grateful for the breath and sound of my lungs.

We want to be grateful. We have a lot to be thankful for. And in fact, using and honoring God with the things that he's gifted us is a primary way to kill sloth. Like one way to kill sloth and laziness is just to get active. Get up. Go do something about it. Like actually take action towards it. We need to stop living in a culture that says, oh, I'm going to do this tomorrow. I'm going to do this thing. I'm going to keep doing it. No, no, no. We need to take action. and step up. We need to take gratitude for the life that God has given us. Gratitude for the gifts. You know what else we need to do? We need to have gratitude that God has given other people gifts. I'm grateful that I can't lead worship, okay? Because if I sang, you wouldn't want to listen to it,

all right? I'm grateful for Abby Gamboa. I'm grateful for elevation rhythm. I'm grateful for Aaron Tedeski. I'm grateful that God has given them gifts and that one way they honor God with their life and their body and their talents is by using it for his glory. What does the book Romans say? It says, our life is a living sacrifice for God. And whenever we get lazy and passive, what are we doing? Uh-uh, God, I don't feel like offering my body for you. I feel like living my life my own way.

I feel like doing this my own way. But speaking on the body specifically, we don't want to be slothful, we don't want to be lazy, we want to honor God with our lives. Let me ask you this question. If you're someone that is struggling with laziness or sloth, What areas are you being slothful and what areas of what are you being lazy in? Repent for slapping God in the face by being passive and ask God for strength and strategy to honor him with the gifts and talents he's given you, but to honor him with your life and the breath inside of your lungs.

But speaking about the body, a sin that I've personally struggled with the most, which would be the second of the seven deadly sins, is gluttony. Now, about a year ago, I was really dialed in on this workout plan, all right? really doubted, locked in. Like, I'm telling you, like, I didn't even eat, like, a carb for two months. Like, I was just grilled chicken and steak and vegetables. And three months in, I decided I'm craving a crumbull cookie. So I went to crumble cookie. And I ate, like, 12 crumbled cookies without leaving the parking lot. I ate six of the big ones, and then I ate six of the small ones by myself in my car, nobody watching by myself without even leaving the parking lot, right? And so like, we need to understand gluttony is mostly associated with food, but it's when we're looking to food

for comfort, for escape, self-control. Gluttony is simply escapism with an overconsumption of things oftentimes pointed to food. And for me, gluttony is the sin that I'm struggling with the most right now. I love the taste of food. And for some reason, reason I'm letting, I'm eating, I will eat to the point that my stomach hurts, okay? And it's hard. And because I know deep down, like sometimes like when I'm wanting to eat a bunch of food, it's like I know like what part of my heart is looking for God in food right now. Like what part of me is being tempted to think that my comfort and satisfaction can come from food, from a flavor bomb, from whatever it may be? It's like, it's like we're looking

to physical nourishment to help us out. And what does First Corinthians say? It says, whatever you eat or drink, do it all for the glory of God. A lot of people would do a whole lot of things for food. I mean, what happened to Esau? Esau literally sold his birthright for beef stew. I wouldn't even eat beef stew, but like selling the birthright for beef stew is crazy work. Like people will do so many things for food. And so like oftentimes reminding myself about food and gluttony is so,

so, so important for me, myself. And so it's like even now, when I look at other people's lives that I know that struggle with the gluttony, like oftentimes, proverb says the glutton and the drunkard will come to poverty. It's like financial ruin plus physical ruin is the deadly combo that gluttony brings. Not only will gluttony drain you financially, but physically, again, you'll be slapping God in the face with your body by not taking care of. So it's like, well, how do we conquer this? We have to understand something. And I keep having to remind myself in this principle that we're applying to gluttony can be applied to every other deadly sin that we talk

about today. But self-control is a fruit of spirit. Like, we forget that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Like through his spirit, we can bear self-control. It's like I'm talking to Bryce right now who the night he graduated from Liberty University I slammed like 40 McNuggets talking to that guy like you can have self-control you know I can have self-control

we can we can have self-control and what we eat and how we eat the quality the quantity when and what like those questions matter when it comes to food why are you eating are you trying to escape and you and I both know not just with gluttony.

Like sin doesn't let you escape anything. You just bury yourself deeper in the pit. So what and why are you eating it? How much are you eating? What's the quality that you're consuming? And just know that self-control is something that we can practice as believers. Like we don't need to aim at sin like it's a target. We just need to love Jesus and trust Jesus

our satisfaction, significance, and security comes from him. The third of the seven deadly sins that we're talking about today is pride. The crazy thing about pride is that no one thinks that they're the proud person. No one thinks that they struggle with pride. It's the easiest sin to have, but the hardest to see. And you know what one major way you can tell

if you have pride in your heart is if you think you got it all together. if you think you know it all. In fact, you don't. Pride is the only sin that was committed before the garden. Okay, in Isaiah chapter 14, we see that Satan fell in heaven because he was like, I can be my own God, I can be greater than God. God's trying to hinder me.

God's trying to put my flame out. God's trying to pull walls around me, trying to border me. So Lucifer falls to his own pride because he wants to be his own God. Right? We see that in the scriptures. Pride is the sin that happens in the garden. Did God really say that? he just doesn't want you to eat that fruit because he knows that you'll become greater and smarter

than him if you eat from it. And all sin really is is thinking, I know what's best for my life. God doesn't have my back. I got my own back. And I don't know about you, but whenever I say that in my own life, I fail 10 times harder. I fall in my face. I hurt myself. And it's like I can't even get up. I can't shake myself free. And that's a reality. You can't shake yourself free. You can't. James 4 says God opposes the proud. So my question is, will you humble yourself before God or will you let your sin humble you? One of the two will happen. Either you are willing to humble yourself before God and say, God, you're right, I was wrong. I don't know what's best for my life. You know what's best for my life. You're in control. I'm not in control. Or you can let your sin humble you. Satan wants you to build yourself on this high pedal stool of pride so that you can fall hard. So you can embarrass yourself and feel shameful for you. for falling into that. I mean, look at King Nebuchadnezzar. For seven years, he lived like an animal in the wilderness, and he was humbled by his sin in that moment, and then God restored him. It doesn't matter if you're a king, no matter your ethnic background, your financial status, your

social status, God will humble us. We have nothing to be pride for or be boastful for or stick out our chest. How easy is it to do so? Like one of the main things I'm learning right now in marriage, which goes hand in hand. It's like, I actually don't know it all. Like I remember in the engagement season, I was like, dang, I got a really good grip on what it means to serve Maddie, love Maddie, be humble. And then a month into marriage, I'm like, I'm the most selfish human being on the planet. It's like, I actually don't have it all wrong. I don't got it all. I'm actually wrong. I'm actually, I actually need to humble myself before God. I need God to lead me.

I need to understand what God has in store for me. I need to understand my wife because if I'm not submitted to God and I think I got it all together, then I'm going to lead my wife into a bad decision. And so if you're someone that struggles with pride, arguably, let me just warn you, pride, arguably is the one sin that will lead you to every other sin. Because you'll convince yourself that you don't need God.

And then you'll convince yourself that, yeah, going to eat 12 crumbled cookies at nighttime is a good idea. idea for you and then you'll think, oh, it's not a big deal if I stay up late on my phone and scroll on social media and look at girls or guys online. Oh, yeah, I could use a little extra money. I don't need to tithe on Sunday. I don't feel like being generous because I need this money for myself. Or I'm going to take justice into my own hands of retaliate against this person that's done me wrong and hurt me because be careful with pride. Easiest sin to have. Hardest one to see in yourself.

So practically, like, what does it look like to overcome pride? This is why it matters who you surround yourself with. Paul says bad company corrupts good morals. If you surround yourself with yes men, no one will have the guts to tell you you're doing something wrong when you're doing something wrong. That's so important. If you surround yourself with people that are impressed by you,

they're too afraid to tell you how it is. Like my wife, she keep it real. Maddie? Oh, does it stink a little bit? Absolutely. But she keeps it real. Because she understands. She loves me enough to tell me the truth.

my mentors, my friends, the people around me. They love me enough to tell me the truth. And so who you surround yourself with matters. Who are the people that understand your heart the best? Who aren't going to let it slide and who can actually speak into your circumstance, your life, your decisions, your marriage, your friendships, your job, everything in between outside of the Lord? Who are those people that are being led by God?

That can speak into your situation. The fourth of the seven deadly sins is greed. Greed is an excessive attachment to money, fame, or power. This is simply a trust and contentment issue. There's a guy named George Whitaker. Sorry, not George Whitaker, George Mueller. George Mueller has this famous quote, and we're like saying it like it's famous,

but it's genuinely such a chill quote. He says, if you're not satisfied, with the amount of money in your bank account now, you'll never be satisfied with double the amount of money in your bank account, which is so true, right? For some reason, we mask a trust and contentment issue with financial security. And so, like, we think that, like, money

and stewardship and all this things is going to solve the problem and stuff like that, but it actually doesn't. Money, we need to understand this thing about money, okay? Money is amoral. It has no feelings, thoughts, or emotions. Okay? not money that's inherently sinful. It's the love of money. Let me tell you about a situation

that I think we'll put that that will put it into a better picture. I had a coworker when I was 18 who barely had any money who would waste his money on alcohol and drugs, waste his money on scratch off tickets. He would literally try to split our cash tips at lunch with me so he could go get scratchoffs across the street and I would get to keep everything from 12 to 7. That's how much he had a money problem. And then I have a distant family relative is a really successful businessman, great CEO, who's the most honorable, full of integrity, disciplined, self-controlled, man of God I've ever met. Who has the money problem? Well, obviously, my old coworker. So it is the amount of money in a bank account that makes it sinful or makes you greet an

issue? Absolutely not. It's actually the heart behind the person that's dealing with the money. So maybe like if you're someone that's like asking God for money and you're not getting money, maybe it's because God can't trust you with money. Like stewardship is important, but we shouldn't mask greed by saying, oh, well, I just need more money because I need to steward it. And like, that's what I get. It's like, no, greed is a heart issue with money. There's a reason why the Bible says no one can serve two masters.

You either love one and hate the other or you be devoted to one and despise the other. A house can, divided amongst itself, cannot stand. You can't serve both God and Mammon. you can't serve both God and money. Why is this so important? Because money will give you a temporary or a finite version of what God gives you. Money gives you power, gives you fame, it gives you status, it gets you things. So you can't serve both God and money because the love of money can mask itself as its own God.

So like if you're someone that struggles with greed, you know what a big indicator could be? If you don't think you struggle with greed, then try to give money away. Go give your money away. I'm not telling you to give all of it away, but give money away. You struggle with greed?

Okay, try to go give some away. I'm not just talking to the homeless person, the $5 cash, that's like the change that you leave in your pocket that gets washed the washing machine. I'm talking, no, go give some money to some cancer research. Go give some money to some calls that you could support.

Go give some money to some homeless people. Go give some money to that family member. Go give some money to some friends. Go give it away. If you don't have to say, if you really don't struggle with greed and money, yeah, go give it away.

Go be generous. Do you struggle with being generous? When people are in need, do you like cringe at the fact that people are in need? Go be generous. When I first moved to L.A., this story really breaks my heart.

When I first moved to L.A., TikTok was huge. So like TikTok blew up and like, you know, I would say like 2018, 2019, it was starting to catch wind. And then, you know, it really got popular. But when I moved here late 2022, all these social media influencers that had made all this money in the rise, they had made all these brand deals and all this money. And as they made more money, their lifestyle increases. As they made more money, they bought the luxury stuff. As they made more money, they bought the bigger apartment. They upgraded the house. They did this. And then right when I moved to L.A., it's like the money kind of like plateaued.

And people started not making as much money. And so it's like their lifestyle was increasing, but their money wasn't. So the only way to keep their lifestyle increase was to increase their money, but they were making money. So so many people I watched move to OnlyFans. And so they started sexualizing themselves

and selling themselves for money. And it breaks my heart to this day because I knew some of them personally. And then some of them I just witnessed that, that had come and went, people that I ran into, money will make you do crazy things. Money will make you compromise in ways that you could have never imagined.

I even know someone who said, I would never do that, talking about OnlyFans. I would never make that same mistake talking about someone he knew. And then he did it a couple months later. Because money was a problem. There's no 401k better than Jesus. Because when I lay my head on the pillow at night, The thing that gives me security is not if I have a savings account or a 401k.

The thing that gives me security is, am I right with Jesus? Jesus my all is he my prize. The fifth deadly sin that we're talking about is wrath. Wrath is an uncontrolled anger that's seeking vengeance. It's literally taking the justice of God into your own hands. What does the scripture say in Matthew chapters 5 through 7? If you were angry at a brother, you've committed murder in your heart,

All of these sin issues, by the way that we've talked about, wrath. You were talking about wrath, greed, pride, sloth, gluttony, and then we will talk about lust, and we will talk about envy. All of these are heart issues. Okay? They all start in the heart, and we'll get to that in a little bit. But this is uncontrolled anger, wrath, it is the starting point. Anger is the starting point to wrath.

If you can't control your anger, you got a big problem. The Bible says, be angry and do not sin, so is anger the issue? No, we see in the scriptures, Jesus flipped the money tables. So he had this righteous anger. So is anger inherently bad? No, but it's what you do with the anger that matters. Are you retaliating against someone that has hurt you? This is why forgiveness is so important. Forgiveness means to cancel the debt that someone owes you. And when you don't practice forgiveness because you've forgotten the forgiveness that God has on your own life, then you will see wrath coming to your life. And if you're someone right now that's listening to this,

it's like I struggle with wrath a lot, or I'm struggling with all these things, or some of these things, and it started small and I just can't end it up. Ephesians chapter 4 says, unrepentant sin gives the devil a foothold in your life. So if you're someone that's like, I can't stop trying these things,

well, maybe because you have this unrepentant sin in your life. Like wrath is something that you can't, like you keep trying to play God in your own life and this justiceism, and you think that you know what's right, and you know how to handle justice, and you think God isn't going to do this. Well, in order to,

to combat wrath, you have to communicate. Like, what do the scripture say? It says, if you have something wrong with your brother, stop whatever you're doing, go to that brother, reconcile with that brother, like meet with that person, reconcile, don't let the sun go down on your anger. It is so important

that anger doesn't build up in your heart. I know people close to me who let wrath lead their life, and it is scary. It is terrifying. And it can lead to so many other things. It is a weapon. Held anger creates this foothold in your life. It's this unrepentant sin, this bitterness. And so let me just tell you something. If you're someone that struggles with wrath,

reflect on the forgiveness of God in your life. What has God done in your life? What does Peter say? Well, Jesus have already forgiven him seven times. So now what? Can I stop forgiving him? And Jesus says, forgive him 70 times seven. Infinity times infinity. Never stop forgiving. forgiveness is more about yourself than for the other brother. Like, yes, when you receive forgiveness, the debt that Jesus cancels on our own life. And when people that you've hurt forgive you, it just brings life to you.

But when you're someone who has a grudge towards someone in their heart, or you've been wrong or someone's hit you on the cheek and you decide to turn the other cheek, it takes this relief and pressure off your chest, off your heart, off your shoulders. It just does something in your heart. the sixth of the seven deadly sins

that we're talking about is envy and envy can be described at the sadness of the blessings of another Aquinas says it's a sorrow for another's good Proverbs 14 says that envy actually rotens the bones and 1st Corinthians 13 Paul says that love does not envy or boast you see why is it that we hope

the worst in people why is it that we get sad when other people are blessed with things that we want. As a matter of fact, you should be grateful that God trusts other people with things that he can't trust you with. Because if God trusted you with things that he can't trust you with, then you wouldn't use them for his good, for his glory. So you know what? I'm grateful for the worship leaders, like I said earlier. I'm grateful for the artist. I'm grateful for the graphic designers. I'm grateful for the athletes. I'm grateful for all that.

I'm grateful for the incredible authors. I'm so grateful for that. we need people who can actually steward gifts that they've given them instead of be someone who thinks that the whole world revolves around us. Like there's a sense of pride that comes with envy to think, man, God, why would you trust that person of that instead of me? Because I can do it my way. And this isn't that. There we go.

Pride leads to every other sin, right? So this thing of envy, Gavin Ortland once said, which I love Gavin Ortland, he's got great stuff. He said envy can turn heaven into a worse hell. because we have this deep sadness for another's person good. But heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents than a thousand righteous persons. If envy was true in heaven, then it would be,

heaven would be sad that the attention is taken off of then on the one person that repents. So honestly, the way that we can fix envy is the same way Jesus is seen using Thanksgiving as more than a holiday. But Jesus takes gratitude and Thanksgiving as a holiday. weapon against sin and temptation. When you practice gratitude and Thanksgiving, then you are grateful for other people's lives or other people's gifts for your life what God has trusted you with,

and envy is killed at the root. The last sin of the seven deadly sins that I want to talk about is lust. And this is a personal one for me because when I was in the fifth grade, I was simply on a beach vacation and a random person exploited me to pornography on the fifth grade on the beach, and that began my addiction to pornography. You never forget when you're introduced to a drug. And honestly, that battle was private. It was shameful. Filled with guilt and regret, hurt.

Felt like God didn't want to be around me. You see, lust, lust is this unrestrained craving for love. It's a heart issue, and we think that love is sex, it's porn. It's how many people we can hook up with. I mean, that's what Hollywood pushes. That's what society pushes right now. Like glorified rom-coms are people cheating on each other to get the relationship at the end.

Movies can't stop showing people that are having sex. It's like we can't conquer this thing with less. Let me just go ahead and clarify this. Sexual sin is different than any other sin according to scripture because it's a sin against your own body. Whenever you commit sexual sin, you're devaluing the very very very. vessel that God has given you.

And sexual sin is the only sin in the Bible. It says, hey, to deal with sexual sin, you actually run from it. And learn from my mistakes. There were so many times, like in my struggle with sin before I was, struggle with sexual sin before I was a believer where I thought that I could get close to the line. I could get in the boxing ring with it, but I wouldn't fall to it. Whereas the Bible would say, if you get in the boxing ring with sexual sin,

you've already lost. You need to run. And so for you, that may be like, no, well, I'm going to stop. I need to stop watching porn, but like, I can still follow these girls or guys on social media. But that's what's leading you into porn. Or you can say, well, I need to stop having sex with my boyfriend and girlfriend outside of marriage. But like, I'm going to still sleep over at their house or live together with them before we're married. It's like, okay, there's a part of us right now.

And a lot of times we do this with sexual sin. you need to stop blaming the devil for situations that you put yourself in. Like take some accountability here. We need to understand what Jesus says about sexual sin. He says, if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off. For it's better to enter the kingdom of heaven with one member than to go to hell with both. And if your left eye causes you to sin, gouging out, for it's better for you to enter the kingdom of heaven with one eye than to go to hell with both. What does that mean?

Whatever is causing you to sin, cut it out of your life. Psalm 139, King David pray, search my heart, God. Ask God to reveal the areas of your heart that are causing you to sin and ask God through the strength of the Spirit of God to give you the strength to cut it off. Paul tells us that Satan has no new tricks. No, there's no temptation that is overtaking you. That's not common to man. God is faithful and just, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond measure.

So if sexual sin, which oftentimes this is the case, is the one sin that you can't say no to, that you think you can't say no to, the Bible says you can say no to it through the strength of the Spirit of God. You can't do it on your own. And I think that's the first major step. Like whenever you see these pastors and people in church fall from grace through sexual sin, like they didn't just wake up one day and go, I'm going to go cheat on my wife with the secretary. It all starts by like looking at someone a little too long on social media or going to the gym and looking at someone at the gym in a sexual manner and not confessing it to someone.

And so, look, I understand every human being is on a quest for love. But what is love? Love isn't sex. Love isn't the feeling you get when the booze its system. It isn't drugs. It isn't a thing. Love is a choice.

Love is Jesus. It is laying your life down for someone. When you realize he is the prize, that is the prize, then all this other sexual stuff becomes less temporary, less tempting. I remember in 2024, I was preaching at a conference in Philadelphia, and a young man came up to me and said, hey, Bryce, I want to stop watching porn.

And so I asked him a few questions. I said, when, what, how. And he told me that he was staying up late at night, scrolling on his phone. And that's how he would fall into porn. So I asked him, I said, do you use your phone as an alarm to wake yourself up for school in the morning? He said, yeah. I said, okay, well, then go plug your phone up at 8 o'clock at night outside of your bedroom and go buy a regular alarm clock with double A batteries and use that to wake yourself.

up. He said, I don't want to do it. And I looked at him and I said, then you don't want to stop watching porn. And so, like, yes, we need the strength of the spirit of God to conquer any of these seven deadly sins, especially lust. But if you're not willing to take practical action and practical action steps that it takes to actually cut this thing out of my life, then I would argue that you love your sexual sin more than you love Jesus. If you're not willing to put the phone out of the room and go get the alarm clock, you love your lust more than you love Jesus. If you're not willing to stop living with your girlfriend or boyfriend before marriage, then you love your sexual sin more than you love Jesus. If you're not willing to stop sleeping over at your significant other's house outside of marriage,

then you love the sexual dopamine rush more than you love Jesus. Therefore, you're trying to put Jesus in your mind as a feeling. And when you're not getting that feeling, you go, I want that feeling from a relationship from porn from this and that. Don't get it twisted. Love isn't those things. Love is Jesus. He has displayed his stuff. Love chooses you when it doesn't feel like it. And if anyone didn't have a rhyme or reason to choose us, it was him, the perfect Almighty God who knows the people who are going to regret him and who are going to not choose him and who are going to shove him to the side, even at the end, he still chose to love them. And that is so, so powerful. Guys, I want to pray for us before we close it. If you struggle with any or all or some

of these seven deadly sins that God will give you the strength, We're going to pray 1 Corinthians 1013 and Psalm 139. We're going to declare that no temptation is overtaking you. That's not common to man. Satan's got no new tricks. He's been using the same thing for thousands of years. If you're someone that struggles with any of these sins, the first thing you should do is actually instead of shell up and hide,

thinking no one else is struggling, confess to people because there's oftentimes more people, especially close to you that are struggling with the same things. In fact, when you confess when you're tempted, not when you fall and when you're tempted, it makes Satan lose his power over you in their area. God is faithful and just the scripture continues in. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond measure,

but he will provide a way of escape. Meaning out of those deadly sins, if there's one that sticks out that's like, if I'm tempted with this thing, there's no way I can say no to it. The Bible says you can't through the strength of the Spirit of God, and we're going to pray for that. Jesus, we thank you for today.

We thank you for who you are. We thank you that you've defeated every sin issue on the cross. Lord, we pray with Psalm 139, which you search our heart, reveal to us the areas of our heart that are causing us to sin, and Lord, give us the strength to run away, cut it off and choose you over our sin. We love you, Jesus.
