What's going on, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Bryce Crawford podcast. I'm Bryce. And today we are going to be diving in the most searched Bible verse on all the internet, arguably the most well-known Bible verse, but oftentimes I think this verse is one that we just numb out to as Christians. I mean, we've heard it so long. You know, you have heard John 316. I mean, it's been worn on eye black and football games. It's a on it's on bracelets it is the the pinnacle of the christian faith whatever you want to call it this bible verse is the most famous bible verse i believe in all of scripture yeah whatever you could say jesus wept okay if you want to be like that guy but we're talking like actually know the scripture john 316 even an atheist knows what john 316 is but when do we really slow down and actually understand the weight and the gravity of what's being said in this verse. And so today, if you got your Bibles, we're going to be in John chapter 3, baby. You can flip over there. Now, I love the gospel of John. I love everything about it. I mean, John is a fisherman. He writes a little bit more simpler.

I'm not, you know, I'm not some crazy philosopher. So, you know, I love the gospel of John for the simplistic language and the ministry and life of Jesus and the fact that John was at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified means so much to me reading a gospel eyewitness account. But in John chapter three, let's set the scene here really quickly. Nicodemus, who is a high religious leader and Pharisee in the time period, wants to sneak and get away and ask Jesus some questions. Now, the Pharisees at the time, they weren't really on good terms of Jesus. It wasn't that Jesus was mean to them, is that they were mean to Jesus.

They hated Jesus. They constantly tried to find ways and questions and phrases and things to throw at Jesus' way so that they could find a reason to arrest him, potentially kill him. And so Nicodemus, he's a little curious, because there's a lot of talk around the town about this guy named Jesus from Nazareth. And so he says, I've got to meet up with this guy at nighttime so no one can be seen, right? He is ashamed of it, so he wants to go at nighttime to ask Jesus, questions. And before we get into this, I just want to highlight something very quickly. Why is it

that when we are interested about Jesus, or maybe on the contrary, we're not interested in Jesus, we want to either sin. When we sin, we try to do it in the dark, but for some reason when we're curious, it's like we approach Jesus and we're like, I don't want anyone to know about him. No, we should want to embrace the Christian faith, wear it on our chest as a seal of going, this is the thing that I'm passionate about. That's how we want to wear the Christian faith. That's how we want to be bold about it. Nicodemus is meeting up with him at night. And we're going to start just in verse one. There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God,

for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. And Jesus answered him, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born. Nicodemus has this natural mindset on how often do we do with that with God? Well, how is that even possible, God? What do you mean? You know, he's like, I can't, my mom's dead. Nicodemus, like, my mom's dead, and I can't crawl back inside into her womb. That's impossible. And he says, unless one is born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit of spirit.

Do not marvel that I said to you, Jesus says, you must be born again. The wind blows where it wishes and you hear it sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, how can these things be? Jesus answered him, are you the teacher of Israel? And yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness of what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. Jesus, I love what he says here in this verse, if I have told you earthly things and you do not believe. How can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

He's so funny. He's like, dude, if you ain't even believe what I'm telling you right now, how are you going to believe what I say to you when I'm talking about the spiritual realm? If you ain't even believe in what I'm telling you right now. I love that. I think that's so funny to me. No one has ascended into heaven except he who has descended from the heaven, the son of man.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life talking about to himself now we're about to get into the verse but we need to preface something here really quickly before we get into the most famous verse of all scripture the religious leaders and the jews they had this idea that the messiah was going to be someone super wealthy born of royalty very beautiful of physical appearance who was going to literally overthrow the roman government Like that was going to be this new kingdom that the Messiah brought.

But this Jesus of Nazareth, the guy, he was born in a horse trough in a parking lot and grew up in Nazareth. And people would say, nothing good comes from Nazareth. And he had the appearance, physical appearance, like every other Jew. And so he's got all this buzz around him and he's interested. Because Nicodemus actually has a little bit of sense in his brain where he's like, Okay, I know I'm technically supposed to hate you because everyone of my other brothers of the Pharisees hate you, but like, I know you've got to be sent from God because the things that you do, you couldn't do, unless you were from him.

And Jesus right now is making this effort in language that he should know. I mean, when Jesus looks at him and says, you've got to be born of water and spirit, what is he referring to? Ezekiel 36. He's hinting back to the Old Testament. these he's hinting back the passages subtly that nicodemus should know by heart that nicodemus had to memorize that nicodemus had to understand so like nicodemus is out here acting like dumb for to be you know to be blunt like nicodemus out here acting dumb like he doesn't know what jesus is saying but jesus is speaking his

language right to his face and nicodemus is acting oh what do you mean like i can't even crawl I got to be born and water in the spirit. What do you mean? I got to crawl back in it. I can't crawl back into my mother's. I'm dead. I can't do that. And so Jesus, right here in this verse,

arguably the most beautiful verse in scripture, he looks at Nicodemus in the face, a religious Pharisee of the time, and says, for God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

We have heard that verse. We have read that verse. It has been quoted in church. We have learned it when we were four years old. And we forget the weight and the gravity of that statement. Do you not realize what we just read for God. God himself so loved the world. everyone to have ever breathed oxygen

that he gave his only son it costed the father something to ransom us from hell that anyone who would believe in him anyone who would put their faith and trust in Christ the son the one that was sacrificed whoever believes in him will not experience the perishing the suffering of eternal life,

but will actually experience real, true life. That is the promise from Jesus. The gospel simplified in this one verse, and the craziest thing about this whole interaction, isn't just the verse and the content of the verse itself. It's the fact of who he's saying it to. Because now in like 21st century language, we write off the religious guy,

as if the religious guy is too far gone. And Jesus is speaking. directly to the religious guy. Yeah, God loves you too. And you know who else he's speaking to? He's speaking to the homeless man that can't mentally make thoughts right in his brain. God loves him too. And you know who else Jesus is speaking to when he's talking to Nicodemus? He is speaking to the wealthy billionaire who's had it all in this world but still feels empty. Yeah, he loves him too. You know who else Jesus is talking to? He's talking to you. He's talking to me for God so loved the war. that he gave. You hear so often that people love you,

that people love the world, but all they do is take, take, take. No, no, no. God so loved us that he gave his only son. And then the verse right after it, it just gives even more nth to the most famous verse of scripture. Then it says,

for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be safe through him. Why is that verse so important? Because nowadays, if you try to tell someone about Jesus, they label you as an Islamophobe, a homophobe, a transphobe, a transphobe, a blank foe, oh, you're hateful, you're pushing your religion on me. And it's like, no, Jesus came to seek and save the loss. If you tell someone about Jesus and someone is labeling you as a transphobe, homophobe, Islamophob, or hateful, or they're just a total cop out. That's a total cop out.

What do you mean I'm hateful? I'm not hateful. This is the most loving thing that we can do. the utmost greatest form of gratitude is to preach the gospel to people. Because it's what saves. Money doesn't save. Finding your identity and sexuality doesn't save. Having infinite physical pleasure with guys or girls doesn't save. Drugs doesn't save. Substances don't save.

Numbing yourself with food. Doesn't save distracting yourself with social media. Does not save. He saves. Jesus wins. At the end of the day. He has won for God so loved the world that he gave his only son. And it's all the table for anyone that believes in him shall not perish, but they will have

eternal life. The weight and the gravity of this verse is almost, it is incredibly powerful. And sometimes, no, not sometimes, oftentimes, we just forget it. Like, I remember when I first became a believer, if I heard someone attempt to preach on this verse, it was like, oh, I already know it. Like, let me tune out. Let me tell you something. If you read John 316 and your heart isn't moved and your temptation when hearing John 360 is to tune out, there's a heart issue going on in your soul. Because you think you know it all.

Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and he has come down to seek and save us. So loved the world for God. so loved that he didn't take from you, but he gave to get you back. That whoever, whoever, whoever doesn't matter your skin color, it doesn't matter your financial status, it doesn't matter how many followers you have. None of it matters. Whoever you won't bear, but you'll have eternal life. We have to continue to be moved by this.

if we are not moved by this, we are lost. And to sit here to think that so many times I have read for God so loved the world and just read it as if it is just words on a piece of paper. If you are someone who is watching or listening to this episode and you have felt the conviction that I feel when in reading that verse, maybe you've tuned out maybe you've clocked out

maybe you don't know let us repent right now I want to pray that every time you think you read John 316 you read anything about the gospel that your heart

gets this deep burden of gratitude and for people I won't even know if this episode makes it out on the internet because I'm not even promised tomorrow I won't even know if this will see the light of day. Yet we sit back and we aren't moved by the gospel so much so that that verse can numb us out,

that we won't tell other people about it, that we won't warn people or get people excited about who Jesus is and the promise of who he is. We need to be moved by this verse. I want to pray for us that we repent of being cold-hearted. or numb to John 316 and we let it sit in our hearts and compel us into action, love, gratitude, respect, honor, all of the above. Jesus, we love you. God, we thank you.

We're so grateful for you. God, we repent for being numb to such a profound verse like John 316. God, would it sit and soak in our hearts? God, would we love you? Would the gospel move us every time we read it no matter how search, how powerful. popular how well-known a verse is, any verse. Would we be moved by God, we love you, we thank you, we praise you in Jesus' name. Rosen lasagna, medium power, 15 minutes.
