Starting point is 00:00:00 Striving for mediocrity in a world of excellence, this is The Chaser Report. Hello and welcome to The Chaser Report for Monday, the 28th of February. I'm Lachlan Hotson. I'm here with Gabby Bolt. Heyo! And we are joined again by our big, big friends, Ella, Maddie and Millie. How are you going? Hey, hey. It's a gang.
Starting point is 00:00:24 We're going to chat all about Big Big Big's upcoming show, Catching Jack. We're also going to talk about the podcast award. and then I've got a little quiz. You've always got a fucking quiz. I'll tell you what. It's becoming a problem. You need to stop making quizzes. I do.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Yeah. After the break. The Chaser Report. Less news more often. All right, so big, big are currently touring their show Catching Jack at the Adelaide Comedy Festival. Guys, you've been performing your show for the last week. How's it gone?
Starting point is 00:01:02 It's really good, yeah. It's so fun to get it back up on its feet. I think with all, you know, the COVID sort of halting performances, this is the first time we've had it up for quite some time. So it feels really nice to get back into it and remember that it's fun to be fun. Yeah. It's a little bit.
Starting point is 00:01:21 But yeah, everyone's been so supportive and lovely. And it's just so, Adelaide Fringe is just such a wonderful, colourful, brilliant, vibrant festival. So it's just a really nice landscape to do this show in. Oh, awesome. Have you found that people in South Australia are like really sort of happy to get back out there, you know, even though pandemic's sort of affecting everything? Like, have you found that the audiences have still been really sort of supportive and like
Starting point is 00:01:47 really up for anything kind of thing? Because I feel like, yeah, that festival vibe really relies on a lot of sort of foot traffic and people getting out and about. Yeah, you know, we were really wondering. what was going to happen. But so far, it has seemed like people are pretty confident. Yeah. Oh, good. That's nice to hear. And so walk us through a show. Yeah, let's talk the show. What is Catching Jack? Catching Jack is a silly sketch show where three detectives try to catch Jack the Ripper. It's about time. He's had it too good for too long. Yeah. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Exactly. So we're putting together the clues. Maybe we'll meet some. silly characters in the night. Who knows? That's what you can expect. Is it like uke-spooky or is it like uki-spooky but fucking hilarious? No laughs. No laughs. All ook. Yeah. This man is a murderer. I don't know about you guys but I don't find that very funny. So it's actually really shocking Gabby. Is that so hot? Is it like do you go do you go full out? It's like live death on stage. Every night, snuff play. Yes, exactly. Right.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Very, very silly. High budget, yeah. There's no need to be worried. Okay, okay. I'm an audience member who gets just way too self-conscious. And so if I'm told not to laugh, I won't laugh. Yeah, he's not kidding. It's hilarious to work with because I'll just tell him not to say anything and he won't.
Starting point is 00:03:21 And it's great because then I'll just be like, are you guys excited to be here tonight? And you'll just see Loughlin in the corner like not knowing what to do. I thrive on the fear. It's a lot of fun. You should go to Adelaide. That's why I was about to say. I'm much more keen to go to Catching Jack than I am to one of Gabby's shows.
Starting point is 00:03:35 No, that's fair. If anyone's familiar with your work and we talked about your podcast at the end of last year, The Candy Man, where it was this just fantastic blend of silly and spooky. You guys say that you bring all of that back for the second, or for catching Jack.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Has that genre always been part of your work? It's an interesting question because we actually started writing Catching Jack in 2019 for the 2020 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. We all remember it funnly. Good time. So this is a, it's a historic show both in terms of being set in Victorian London and being written in 2019. Yes, it was vintage work.
Starting point is 00:04:22 This is being remounted. But we wrote the show and then we don't even talk about what happened. The show did not happen. And we were looking for something that we could make that would have a life beyond the pandemic. But, you know, we were still in the same style of the sort of things that we did want to make. So we didn't really intend to make two true-crimey things,
Starting point is 00:04:43 but obviously we were drawn towards that. Yeah. But, yeah, I guess they sort of influence each other because we were writing them at the same time, sort of alongside each other. Yeah, brilliant. Yeah, well, if Candyman's anything to go for, absolutely watch Catching Jack.
Starting point is 00:04:57 But speaking of Candyman, we do have to address the chocolate elephant in the room. Wow. The podcast awards. Oh, no, Lachlan, we don't have to do this. No, we can do it. But they beat us. Oh, yeah, of course they beat us. I mean, of course.
Starting point is 00:05:13 It's not shocking to anyone. We did not go into that going, oh, yeah, we're going to win. That's why we interviewed everyone else so we can seem friendly. I was more going to go for like, congratulations or winning. Oh, yeah, that too. Woo! I will say, just to clarify for the audience, we did not win. We got bronze.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Yeah, that's a win. No, but that's third best. Third best. Crushed it. Did they give you anything? Do you get like a certificate? But nothing. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:05:43 So just the memory. We got bronze. We got a little tile we could put on our Instagram. There you go. We actually weren't given. We just stole it from the podcast award. You're kidding. So you won bronze.
Starting point is 00:05:56 You technically won a title and they didn't even like send an email. Being like, here's bronze. No. That's fucked. We're very grateful. We're very grateful. We love the podcast. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:08 So do we. I was going to say just genuinely. So at the podcast awards, I got ditched by all of my lovely co-workers. You did not get ditched. I dropped three glasses downstairs and got kicked out of the venue. and then I got in an Uber and the last thing I remember seeing or remembering that evening
Starting point is 00:06:28 was your face on the window of the car and me just in the car like goodbye and I got driven off to a no venue. This gives so much context to a lonely Lachlan walking around. Yes. And we were going high. I just wanted to say thank you so much
Starting point is 00:06:47 for taking me under your wing that night because I had a miserable time and that was not because we didn't win. It's probably because all of your friends got paralytic. We were fucked. Because the thing was, everyone was hanging out upstairs, right? Upstairs were the food and
Starting point is 00:07:04 like the fun bar and the fun lights were. And when you walked downstairs, what people didn't realize was that there was just this table full of complimentary wine and beer. And we seem to have discovered it either towards the end of the evening where there was just a heap left over or like before anyone else had figured out
Starting point is 00:07:20 that the free wine was actually downstairs. So we were double parking it all night. And then, well, I say we, Lachlan wasn't. He was being very sensible. I decided to just go ham because I was like, I'm not a producer. I can just have fun. And so then I was double parking at the entire evening. And that's why I felt really bad because I wanted to get a photo with you guys.
Starting point is 00:07:37 I also wanted to hang out. And then by the time you texted being like, come get a photo. I was like, it's not going to happen. I don't even think I could walk. I was on my way out. So I'd like to apologize formally for not taking that opportunity. But it's okay because we'll run into each other at probably either Adelaide or Melbourne. We'll see each other.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Yeah. It'll happen. And then we can bring Loughlin and actually drink with him. I was going to say thank you for being lovely friends. Yeah, this works too. Yeah. Oh, sorry, you can say that too. I just wanted to formally apologize.
Starting point is 00:08:09 There's no need. There's no need. That's actually why we've gotten you on today. It's just to pass on things that we were too scared to text you. On a public podcast. It's great. We've really figured out our, thing on this show.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I think, Lockwood, we don't get to do this very often. No, we don't. I'm glad we reserve it for big, big, big. Anyway. The Chaser Report, news a few days after it happens. So after Adelaide, obviously, you guys have just wrapped up. You're heading to Melbourne, right? That's correct.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And you're going to be doing the first half. Comedy Festival. And we're doing the first little half in Trades Hall. Lovely. Yeah, it would be great. We love that little. spot in the meeting room. Yeah, 31st March 10th of April. Yeah, nice. Are you up for any awards during festival season? Are you up for any Adelaide awards? Have you won any cool bits and pieces?
Starting point is 00:09:06 Or are you just kind of vibe in the show? Must have got lost in the mail. Yeah, no, not that I know. I was just going to ask. So, you know, you're going to Melbourne. You've never been before. We've never been to. Are they from Melbourne? We're never been there. We're shy. I was going for, I was going to ask something because it's like you guys had said that you couldn't get to Melbourne because of COVID. COVID.
Starting point is 00:09:35 You meant the show. The show wasn't. No one could get to Melbourne because of unforeseen circumstances last time. And hopefully it's going to be a lot better this time we're banking on. Are there any, you guys live in Melbourne because you guys have been meant to Melbourne before. Have you got any pro tips for the festival from people who were born and raised in the town? Well, that's a question for Millie, really. Our story is we've lived in Melbourne for many years, me and married, but we actually grew up around South Australia.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Oh my God. But Millie is... Born and raised in Melbourne. My festival hot tip, we laugh, love, take a chance on an act you've never seen before. Yay! I don't know, guys, just have a good time. That works in both of our favours. I concur with that one.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Go check out the shows that you're not sure about. There's a special joy about finding a hidden gem that no one else knows about. And also just sitting through some garbage for an hour. It's all part of the experience. Yeah. Yes, definitely just see as much as you can. If anything else, all shows you see will be character building in some way. Oh, big time.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Big time. Big, big, big time. That's it. You can catch Millie, Ella and Maddie at Melbourne. International Comedy Festival. I was sorry, at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with Catching Jack at the Trades Hall from the 31st of March to the 10th of April.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Haven't you had a quiz? I have got something prepared. You were so excited for a quiz. I've got a little something prepared. I saw it. We're with Big, Big, Big. They know all things big. And so I've prepared.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Yeah. Okay, I'll cut that. I have prepared. Don't cut that. Do not cut it. Do not cut it. Lockland, it's brilliant. You're doing great.
Starting point is 00:11:28 It's okay. I'm so glad that you guys are also supportive. He's never sat in the big chair before, so he's having a bit of a flustered moment. I have prepared a big quiz about all of the big things in Australia. Are you guys familiar with some of the big things? We've got the big banana, the big... Go on. What was another one?
Starting point is 00:11:50 I can't give away too many of them. Because I thought it might be fun with Big, Big, Big, Big, to give them a big, big, big quiz about, the quiz is called, Is it Big, Big, Big? Great. I've got a little list of things here that may or may not be giant tourist attractions around Australia. And so I've got to, I'm going to ask you the question that's on everyone's minds,
Starting point is 00:12:18 is it Big, Big, Big, big, big with Big, big, big. I think we got it. Okay, first question. Okay, great. Is it big, big, big, big, the big bogan? I've never heard of the big bogan. That's not big, big, big, big. No.
Starting point is 00:12:32 They wouldn't make it big, big, big, big, would they? No, how would you even build that? What would it look like? What would it look like? Are we saying it's not big, big, big, big? I'm saying that's not big, big, big, I don't want to speak to you guys. No, that's not big, big, big, big. Wrong, wrong answer.
Starting point is 00:12:48 No, the big, big, big bogan was built in 2015 in, in year. South Wales. What town? I can't remember the town, but it's 12 feet tall. What the fuck? It's equipped with everything from a goatee and a southern crossed flag. That's what it would look like. Wow. Why has my dad been made into a statue? It's terrible. The next big, big, big, big headphones. Is it big, big, big? Is this you trying to come up with one that's not really? and looking around the studio and just seeing microphone and headphones. No, maybe, no.
Starting point is 00:13:30 I can confirm he has got this written down, which makes it even worse. Look, I was wrong last time. I'm going to sit out. Well, look, last time we made a mistake by assuming that what we've been asked was not to be big, big, big. So I don't want to fall into the same trap again. However, my instinct is not big, big, big. It's not big, big, big.
Starting point is 00:13:54 It's not. Lock it in. According to Loughlin's full-proof, very official piece of paper, it is a thing. It is in Newcastle. It's in Newcastle. It's a big pair of headphones and they just chucked it over like a chair. I've seen it. It's very disappointing.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Yeah. 2015 too. You'd think they'd put more effort. Okay. Next question. Big Captain Cook. Is it big, big, big? Oh, nasty.
Starting point is 00:14:22 You know what? When you said you were going to do this quiz, I got excited because I read an article about heritage listing the big, big, big things in Australia the other day. But it hasn't been so unhelpful. That, unfortunately, was there. Oh, I think, yes. Lock it in.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Lock it is. No way, yes, it is. It is big. Yay. Yeah. Nice. It's, it's. Typically, we're not selling.
Starting point is 00:14:48 We're celebrating that there is a big captain. No, no. We're celebrating that Big Big Big knew that there was a big captain court. The big for X can. Is it Big, big, big, big? I think that's Big, big, big, big. I think that's Big, big, big big. Is this a trick quiz?
Starting point is 00:15:05 And these are all Big, big, big, big. No, the Big, big, big floor in my quiz is being discovered. Oh, my goodness. Oh, no. Okay, yeah, no, you're absolutely correct. It is. It's a big four X can. Do you know what surprises me about?
Starting point is 00:15:18 that though you would think that the big 4x can would be in Queensland but it's not it's in northern territory yeah built in 1990 no well because it used to be a tui's can but they kept defacing it saying make it 4x so that's a fun bit of big big trivia wow okay the last question even though the the formula's already been discovered the the big who that's real sorry sorry really why so quick there I'm just aware I'm just aware I'm just a aware of it. Right? Am I wrong?
Starting point is 00:15:51 Yeah, you're correct. You're absolutely correct. You guys have won the big, big, big quiz. I became a great. That was fantastic. The big poo. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I'm going to go back to the drawing board for my specific quizzes with cats. I feel like you need to add some not big, big, big things in this list. So, I guess on that fucking wonderful note, we wish you all the best of luck with catching Jack at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
Starting point is 00:16:18 And I'm definitely going to go see it at Melbourne. I probably won't be able to catch it in Adelaide, but I'll definitely come see it in Melbourne for sure. And all of our fans all around Australia should go to Melbourne for it because that's what we'll be doing. And also, I can't wait for your show, Gabby. Oh, thanks.
Starting point is 00:16:33 No, no, no, don't let her plug our show. I don't even tell them to say that. She plugs it with every guest. It's great. You guys get free tickets for life. Every show. Fill the seats. Likewise.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Before, before we close this episode, do you catch Jack? how could we ever say that's like asking for the spoiler of the movie Lachlan I think I asked them knowing that they decline and then it builds more tension so that everyone goes along and watches it anyway thank you so much Miliela and Maddie
Starting point is 00:17:01 thank you for coming along to this chaotic podcast and we look forward to a sequel show catching Lachlan thank you so much guys our Giro is from Road Microphones and we're part of the Acast Creator Network who are not as big big big as big, big, big.
