Starting point is 00:00:00 The Chaser Report is recorded on Gatigal Land. Striving for mediocrity in a world of excellence, this is The Chaser Report. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Chaser Report with Dom and Charles. And the World Cup is over the FIFA World Cup, 2016. Spain has won the World Cup, Charles. And you're so excited, your microphone is peaking. Isn't that amazing? It's worth it. And I've got wonderful news.
Starting point is 00:00:28 I mean, what are we going to do? What are we going to do, Charles, with no World Cup to entertain us and get us up at 5 o'clock in the morning over and over again until we're completely exhausted. I know. Like, I'm just going to get up and I'm going to have to go and watch breakfast television, I think. I think that's going to. No, it's not that. It's not bad. I mean, even Carl's left breakfast television now.
Starting point is 00:00:48 But I must say, look, I do think that we were spot on with our predictions in the World Cup. I don't know whether you remember, Dom, but about, it must have been a couple of months ago now, we actually predicted this exact result. I've got the clip here. Here it is here. Look, there's a lot of hype about Argentina will succeed and everything like that. But my hot tip is, I reckon Spanish soccer is going so well at the moment. I mean, the women's team is just on fire.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I reckon it'll come down to Argentina and somebody else. I reckon it's going to be Spain. And I reckon Spain might actually get this across the line and win. I'm going to say one nil in some sort of thrilling. You'll go into extra time and then they'll win at one nil. Charles, surely, surely you were not predicting the exact same results in 2010 when Spain won the World Cup after a goal in extra time after their opponents had a player sent off.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Surely you're not going to suggest that, I don't know, a player like, let's just say, let's say Ferran Torres or someone comes off the bench and manages to score a dramatic winner. A hundred and six minute, maybe? that sort of time? That's the rough time frame, I'm suggesting. Yeah, yeah. Look, I think that's fine.
Starting point is 00:02:02 If you want to go into the granular detail, that that's your business. I just hope you're right. I think that's very foolish. But, you know. Wow, we did a great job, Charles. We did an amazing job, isn't me? Now, I'm just wanting to make sure. Did that episode actually end up going out?
Starting point is 00:02:17 Because I was looking for it on the feed, and I couldn't find it on the feed. So I just put it from our archive. I think it was a paying listeners only. Oh, it was a paying listeners only. And for anyone who's a paying listeners only. And for anyone who's a paying listener, there's another tier that you don't get. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:31 So it's like the future predictions. It's a thousand dollars an episode to get those ones. Let's take some ads. It's linked to polymarket. It is. That's true. It's actually an AI which generates every possible outcome. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:43 We've got them all uploaded there. More in a moment. So Charles, look, I've got to be honest with you, I called it very well in terms of my personal movements. I am. I set my alarm not for five o'clock. No. That's when the game started.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I set my alarm for six, correctly predicting that buggerall would happen in the first half, which is exactly what happened. Of course nothing is going to happen. But do you know, Argentina set an extraordinary record in the game today. And I think full credit to them, because they very nearly won the World Cup. They came extraordinarily close. There was a moment near the end where Messi crossed the ball and it fell to Semyoni, who nearly slotted it in.
Starting point is 00:03:23 It just went slightly over, nearly equalized. But I think that was the first shot Argentina had in the entire game. Wow. They had zero shots in regular time. Zero shot. I'm not even talking about shots off target, shots at all. Yeah. And then in the first half of added time, they didn't get any either.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And with the best player in history, Leonel Messi in their team, I admire the audacity. They're experimenting with a new way of playing soccer. But that is actually their gameplay because in the match before that, which was against. Against England. England. They did exactly that. They, like, they just let England dominate for the first. And they were 1-0.
Starting point is 00:04:02 And then they quickly scored two. That was the bit of the game plan that didn't happen today. Yes, of course. Yeah. So, look, well, we can now, how long between each World Cup? It's sort of six years and five years. Well, Charles, this is where the good news comes in. Because, I mean, what are we going to do now that the World Cup's over?
Starting point is 00:04:19 Well, I think the thing is now not watch any soccer for the next five years. But Charles, you'll be very glad to hear. hear what Donald Trump said shortly after the World Cup. Oh, no. I had a great idea for Johnny. I said, you have to do two countries. So announce us again next time and announce another country after that. That'll take out some of the anger and the shock. Now, I think it's a great idea. But based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately. But I said, to take out the shock, you could announce us and maybe then for the next one, another and even another, but we have to do this again, and we have to do while I'm around.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Do you hear that, Johnny? Thank you. Here, we're going to have another World Cup here. Well, there's a bit like the Iran War, isn't it? Like, he did a ceasefire and then he went, no, no, hang on, let's just do another one. Let's get straight back into it. Trump's complete obliviousness to what a World Cup he is. Like, this is the guy who hadn't heard of a red card.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And to be fair, the idea of having consequences for bad actions is not something he's ever really registered. But no, so he obviously had that interference before Belgium where he got Bulligan suspension lifted and basically cheated the rules. But he's now saying we have another one immediately. And he said people might complain about us having another World Cup in America straight after this one. So I told Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, to be fair, you should announce another country as well as us. Yeah. So we'll have another one like very soon, like in a couple of weeks. But then you should announce someone else will get a turn after that.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Does he not know that like it's all sewn up till about 2040 in, in city, both city deals? Well, this is the hilarious thing is that FIFA have been so money grubbing, particularly in the current regime that they've actually booked in, they normally do it about eight years in advance, but they actually did a whole bunch of them in a road to get lots of money. To get the bribes. That's right. So they, we know that the next, at least, at least the current plan, Charles. The current plan is for the 28 World Cup to be Spain and Portugal and some of the other country
Starting point is 00:06:19 near there. I think Morocco is also, and another country are involved. They're going to bring the World Cup home. Yeah. They're going to take it to a place that actually watches and cares about football, a novel idea. So that's 2028. And then do you remember 2032? Do you remember what, that was what happened there? Are you going to say Brisbane? No. That was the one, the 232 World Cup, was the one that Australia thought we had a shot at and we bid. And was that, was that against Qatar? But I thought Qatar had already just toasted. No, no, they did.
Starting point is 00:06:50 So we already got drafted by Qatar. It was Italy or something. It was really? No, no. And this one went to, drum roll please, Saudi Arabia. So just a short while after it was bought by Qatar in 2022, in 2020. Sorry, in 2020. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:06 What are you is it? In 2022. I do think the Saudi Arabians probably have more cash to splash. Yeah. I've got my mouth wrong. It's 2034, of course. The 2032 Olympics is in Brisbane. So 2034 World Cup is in Saudi Arabia.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Yeah. Like Qatar, they have nowhere near enough stadiums, and it just doesn't matter. FIFA's just selling it to the highest bidder. And so I think that that means, because if the 20, 28 of whatever it is, goes to Morocco and Madrid and. Yeah, Portugal. Spain and Portugal mostly. That means that Africa is ineligible for the 20, what would be 40 games. And I think that actually that may, and the Middle East will be 2038 and also, I think Europe will be.
Starting point is 00:07:49 ineligible. I think that that means Australia might be in with a chance. If we become... Because it's got to be an Asian. I think it's got to be either Asian or could it be America? I got all my maths wrong. So 2030 is the one that's in Morocco, Portugal and Spain. 2034 Saudi Arabia. It was an uncontested bidding process. Like that's how we didn't even, that's right. We didn't even bother because we knew it was sewn up by the Saudis. Right. So there's 2038. But Charles, what about the second 2020? 26 World Cup. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:20 We should hope in America. It's happening in America. Yeah. But we could hold the 2027 World Cup that Trump's just announced. We could put a hat in the ring for that one. I love it. Okay. Let's do that.
Starting point is 00:08:33 So it's all happening. Now, one of my favorite things about Spain winning the World Cup and it's worth noting they're clearly better than France. Like they deserve to win. They're the European champions, et cetera, et cetera. Do you mean better than Argentina or better than France? Better than France as well. So France were the favorites coming into this.
Starting point is 00:08:49 But one of the most delicious things about this, one of the reasons why many neutrals wanted Spain to win, was because Donald Trump hates Spain at the moment. Oh, of course, yes, because of all the sort of refusing to let them have their fighter jets, you know, stationed there to go and bomb Iran. Yeah. He said, Spain is a terrible partner in NATO that don't participate. They don't pay. I want nothing to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visit visits. Then he went on, don't even talk to them.
Starting point is 00:09:20 They're hopeless, bad people. Yes. And then guess what happened when the World Cup was awarded by Donald Trump? There were other leaders there too, but Trump awarded it. Gets up on stage with the Spanish team, lifts the cup and won't leave. Like he's basically intruded in all. I can have to use AI to remove him from all the victory photos. So I wanted you to just told him, you know, these guys speak Spanish.
Starting point is 00:09:46 They must be Mexican. And then he would have just been out of it. That's true. That would have freaked him right out. So that's been very enjoyable. He should totally, somebody should tell him that Spain is now run, overrun by Mexicans. Well, yeah, they're Latinx, right? Yeah, yeah. You can surely you can say they're maybe not Latino, but or Latinx.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Yeah. They speak a Latin-derived language. Yes. Oh, we hate that. That's inherently suspicious, isn't it? So look, it's been, it's been a dramatic World Cup. And the thing that's been surprising about it, I think, is that fever haven't managed to ruin it. I mean, even though it was incredibly dodgy and corrupt and the bidding was shonky and they kind of ruined it.
Starting point is 00:10:30 The ticket prices, the stupid hydration breaks, the half-time show, which was completely bizarre and pointless. And I mean, the fact that it was organized by Chris Martin from Coldplay kind of says it all. Like, of all the people in the world to get to organize your halftime entertainment, could there have been anyone chosen. who would more definitively guarantee a boring outcome than Chris Martin from Goldplay. I'm thinking, no, I don't think so. I mean, you know, if former Reserve Bank Governor Bernie Fraser was up to the task.
Starting point is 00:11:00 They should have brought that Ben Ben Beninke. Yes, that would have been. That would have been great. Yeah, yeah. Dr. Anthony Fauci would have stepped up. The Chaser Report, news a few days after it happens. But it's actually been, it has been really, entertaining. There have been a lot of great, a lot of great matches. But I think the entertaining
Starting point is 00:11:24 parts has been nothing to do with America. That's right. It's the soccer. Even FIFA. Even FIFA couldn't ruin the games. They'll find a way. Yeah. I just want to, and what are they going to do? We've had the Maccas match breaks and all these others. How are they going to put more sponsorship in? They've got to start messing with the actual rules of soccer. Because the hydrogen brakes was the first sort of chip in the armor of actually chipping away. Yeah. A whole. lot of traditions around how actually, you know, and the gameplay. Like having the hydration breaks sort of takes away the intensity because everyone gets to catch their breath.
Starting point is 00:12:00 The whole point about soccer is you don't get to get your breath. If you, you know, like if the other team are struggling, you just got to fucking still keep going and defend your turf. So I think, look, I think maybe things like instead of a red card, which Trump was very much against. FIFA could curry favor with Trump by basically bringing in a different style of card. Oh. A purple card. No, a golden card.
Starting point is 00:12:27 A gold card. A gold card. A gold card. A gold card. Where you get to punch people in the face. If you get, if you get the golden ticket, you get to, you get to foul somebody. That's it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:37 You get to punch people in the face like UFC. Yeah. It's an element of UFC. Yeah. And then you get a penalty where the goalkeeper is not allowed to. defend. Yeah, that's right. You get an empty net to take a shot at.
Starting point is 00:12:51 That might give the US a chance. The other thing they could do is more corporate partnership, Charles. I'm imagining Amazon delivery drones that are able to swoop in and pick up the ball and like help one team out, like whichever team bids more. They get a drone player that can actually lift the ball up in the air and just basically shoot very, very fast at the net in a way that's impossible to save. Why not have armored drones? and you can take out players.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Like, you know, like if Messi is suddenly upon you, you just bomb him. Well, the thing is, I mean, you get one drone. He'll be claiming all World Cup that FIFA's biased in front of, in favour of Messi and he's got all these favourable refereeing decisions and so on. I think that's the only way he can play next time because he's 39 now. There's no chance. Like, it'd be 43.
Starting point is 00:13:44 You wouldn't want to play unless they bring the drones in to help him out. Maybe he could wear an armoured suit. Could he wear like an armored robotic suit? The Enhanced World Cup. Oh, that's saying. That's in LA. Yeah. No, in, sorry, in Vegas.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Inhance World Cup in Vegas. It's Caesar's Palace. And what you do, you know, those sort of things that you can strap to your legs, they're like metal things and they've got little motors in them and they help you run it twice the speed. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Put Messi in an armored suit. In an armored suit. Where he can fly.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Yes. Oh, I love that. That's the missing element. It's like a jet pack. But Dom, did you see him on the pitch today? He already can fly. I think here a couple of games had a tight job. Messi had a very quiet game. He did nearly set up an equalizer. But yeah, he's done. He's done. The time is, it's all about Spain now. It's all about the Spanish language. And I think that's a thing. If America wants to actually win the World Cup, right? Yeah. They have to embrace migration. In particular, they've got to. embrace migration from countries that are good at soccer.
Starting point is 00:14:50 So there should be anyone from south of the border, rather than sending immigration in for, like, ICE should be doing quick dribbling tests. Yes. Before deporting anybody, can you juggle the ball? Like, if they can keep the upy for five minutes, there's not only they're staying to get an instant passport. I love it. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:07 And so they actually, they use their anti-immigration instincts to just pat out. To talent spot. Yeah, to talent spot. And rather than ICE shooting, American. You should have a, you know, rather nice shooting potential detainees, you should be getting the potential detainees to shoot at goal from 50 metres out. If they can hit the ball in the back of the net, here's a green card. I feel like you've just come up with a form of populism that is not yet explored.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Instead of right wing or left wing populism, this is sports-based populism. It's actually, you can play on the left or the right wing. We don't care as long as you can score the goal. To be fair, Paul Henson did popularise. The only borders we believe in are the ones with white lines. That's right. Pauline Hanson was the one who suggested that we have a monoculture in Australia. This is her belief.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Yeah. And then she clarified that that included the Sokaroos, which contained multiple literal refugees who had been in refugee camps. They're apparently, if you come and pull on the green and gold jersey and are able to score goals, you're officially part of the monoculture. So I think that would basically be ice doing the same thing. I love it. Well, so what you're saying is actually Pauline Hanson has pioneered this new. She's a thought leader in the world of soccer. She's an influencer.
Starting point is 00:16:25 She certainly is from her European resort side Barker Loungeer. It's been a great World Cup. I look forward to the next one kicking off in a couple of weeks. Yes. And tomorrow, let's get back to talking about war and misery. If we must. I'll see you then. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:40 We're part of the Iconiclass Network and we'll catch you later.
