Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi folks, Chris Voss here from thechrisvossshow.com, thechrisvossshow.com, and coming here with another great podcast. We certainly appreciate you guys tuning in. And what do we have today? It's Monday. Holy crap. We've got news. It's September 9th, 2019.
Starting point is 00:00:18 That's pretty much 9-9-19. There's three nines in there. I probably should be doing this podcast like 9.09 a.m. or something. But I'm not, so there's that. I'm a rebel. I'm a rebel. Can you feel it? He's a rebel.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Anyway, so anyway, let's talk about the news, what's going on, and all that good stuff. Let's start off the top of the hour. Oh, I want to give a shout out to my good friend brian basilico uh he has the bacon podcast.com and uh it's a pretty funny show uh of course an interesting show very smart uh it's he's got a great uh thing with the bacon uh thing that he uses as his podcast title uh so you can google it at bacon podcast or you can go to baconpodcast.com and check it out anyway i appear on the lead-off uh comedy bit of his 500th show which he's celebrating he's got a number of guests on for his show so shout out to him if you get a chance
Starting point is 00:01:18 check out his podcast i think i've been on it i think this is my technically my third appearance although the third appearance is just kind of the lead-. And he called me up and said, hey, I want you on the 500 episode. And so we did a rap bit for about 30 minutes or so, 15 minutes where I just did what Chris Voss does, rapped out a bunch of impromptu lines and uh we just rapped about a show and uh hit gold uh comedy gold if you will uh i thought it was pretty funny uh he he liked it from the get-go um and uh if you go listen to his podcast you're gonna catch my voice in the first uh i don't know 30 seconds of it and uh and he liked it so much he led off as a show as the funniest bit. I suppose that's why he chose it. I don't know. Maybe he just did it because, I don't know, I'm incredibly good looking.
Starting point is 00:02:11 No way. He wouldn't have done it because of that. Anyway, check it out, Bacon Podcast. Shout out to my friend Brian. He's a wonderful, nice guy. If you haven't got a chance to appear on a show, he's got a brilliant podcast and I highly respect him as an individual and as a person. Just the nicest guy ever when it comes down to it uh even though he has a podcast what what what no i'm just kidding that's uh where did that come from chris if you have a podcast you're a jerk wait chris you have a podcast that makes no sense i'm running for president next year
Starting point is 00:02:41 anyway i'm just kidding on that part too that part too. No one wants to delve into my past. Chris has been to a lot of strip clubs. Chris, how would you like to explain your Spearmint Rhino trips? I don't know. Hey, if anyone can be president these days, I mean, why not me? There you go. I support women. Anyway, let's get in the damn podcast.
Starting point is 00:03:07 We tuned in for the news, Chris. Not this shit. All right, man. I got it. Check out Brian's podcast, Bacon Podcast. I swear to God, if you go check it out, you are going to freaking love the intro that we did on the show. I'm not even going to play it for you because I want you to go to his show and jerk it out and all that good stuff. But it will make you laugh.
Starting point is 00:03:27 It's pretty funny. I think it's one of my Oscar moments. This might be, I might want to put this on, if I ever do like an Oscar moment highlight reel, this is probably the heights of Chris Voss acting and Chris Voss Oscar moments. I can't even say Oscar, so I'm probably never going to get one. So let's get started on Product Hunt. We'll start off with Product Hunt this morning and some of the cool things that we found.
Starting point is 00:03:51 We missed a few things over the weekend. We didn't have a show over the weekend, so let's talk about a few of those things that stuck out. Two days ago, there was something very interesting we'll probably end up reviewing on the Chris Voss show called Fido. It claims to be the safest, most minimalist smart lock, and it does look that way. It kind of looks like a nice commercial sort of simple door handle that you turn downward or to open and close, and it's got a 360-degree live fingerprint ID unlock on it. It looks very minimalistic and that's their
Starting point is 00:04:25 idea behind it with a smart lock. And they've launched it on indiegogo.com. You can check it out there or you can go to Product Hunt and check it out as well. Search for Fido. It was the number one product of the day on September 7th, 2019. We'll probably be reviewing this. We like this. It looks very simple. So I imagine the app on it or whatever controls it is going to be pretty feature rich and everything according to what they're showing on their website and ProductHunt.com. There is some very interesting features to it. It's got an alarm system. You can share temporary unlocking authority. You got badges, auto unlock, easy to install, energy savings, Bluetooth, smart connectivity, the fingerprint recognition, of course, which is really interesting. Unbreakable and anti-hack.
Starting point is 00:05:16 That's kind of an interesting feature. I can't really see from their postings as to what that means. We'll probably be reviewing this on the Chris Voss show, but it's definitely interesting. It's very minimalistic. I mean, you'd use this in a commercial project uh i wouldn't put on my front door it's not really beautiful for the front door uh it's just very simple i mean it's good looking but you put on the back door garage or something like that but it looks like it's mostly targeted towards like sort of commercial sort of doors um but very interesting that way i love fingerprinting i love these fingerprint doors.
Starting point is 00:05:46 It's so much easier than just searching for a key. One thing that's interesting is I don't see something on it where there's a key backup. So it runs on two AAA batteries. So make sure you keep the batteries in it or else you won't be able to open your door. Whoa. Anyway, who knows? Maybe they have a backup for it. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:04 It got upvotes of 265 upvotes on ProductHunt.com. This is another thing that I thought was kind of interesting that we missed. A day ago, Samsung launched their Air Dresser. It's a closet that cleans and straightens your clothes for you. It kind of looks like, you know, just looking at the pictures and kind of scanning over the product, it kind of looks like a bit of a, I don't know, is a humidor the right word for this? It kind of looks like a humidor semi-pseudo-refrigerator. You can definitely tell there's like some grill work in it that probably processes some sort of either steaming or, I don't know, it's pretty ambiguous on the website as to what it actually does how it does it and cost etc etc uh but it's kind of interesting it's got a beautiful it looks like
Starting point is 00:06:50 a little sort of it looks like a little mini fridge that's like two of them stacked on top of each other and mini fridge you can also get you you can get your clothes straightened for you and get a drink so it looks like it holds ties, shirts, suits, probably some pants and stuff like that. It's got a little hanger. It looks like a mini closet really inside. And then it's got a beautiful mirror on the front. So that kind of hides it a little bit and makes it very minimalistic, I guess, in space. But what's interesting is I guess it basically will refresh your clothes,
Starting point is 00:07:27 and it's got a bunch of different functions. Like I said, the website's a little ambiguous. I'd love to review it and everything else. It definitely sounds interesting to me. It'd be nice if someone could come up with a different way to do this. It was the number two product of the day, September 8th, yesterday. Like I said, we missed it because we didn't have a show. So you might want to check that out on Product Hunt. You can also go to design.samsung.com and check it out. I think it's kind of interesting. I like
Starting point is 00:07:55 stuff that doesn't make it so that I have to drive over to the dry cleaners as well. I find that kind of annoying to kind of go through that experience. Didn't find a lot of stuff that I like today on producthunt.com, and that's a personal thing for me you may find some stuff that strikes you but there actually wasn't a lot of products so what's going on product hey it's monday man uh so anyway vivaldi if you're familiar with their web browser at vivaldi.com uh i kind of use it as a fifth wheel backup for some of my uh extra extraordinary different accounts that I have that I have stacked on top of each other. So I use it randomly on the Chris Voss show on my browsers. I'm not a big fan of it.
Starting point is 00:08:35 They did announce some interesting sort of new features and stuff on their browser per se. They claim on their browser that they have secure surfing where they fix bugs and have features you can block abusive ads if you if they're misleading or whatever and you can tell your browser to block that content it's kind of interesting evidently it's enabled by default so you can turn off but evidently identify abusive. I guess that's crowdsourced. And they just put them in the bin, I suppose, whatever. You can customize your profiles, filter save passwords and settings.
Starting point is 00:09:17 I mean, they claim to have a whole lot of stuff on their browser, and it does seem to have a very simple footprint. But I just can't ever get away from the chrome baby i love the chrome love the chrome browser so uh they have launched vivaldi getting to the news it's on product hunt the vivaldi for android beta so if you're a big fan of vivaldi browser good for you you can now get on google play uh it doesn't appear that they have it on, maybe they have it on iPhone, I don't know why they wouldn't announce that, uh, but, uh, you can check it out, see what you think, all that good stuff, it is under beta, so, um, there's that, uh, man, I remember when, I remember when, um, I remember when, uh, was, Chrome or was it Gmail? It was in beta for like 10 fucking years.
Starting point is 00:10:07 This is fucking crazy, man. This is crazy. It's like, make up your mind. What are you doing? All right, so let's talk about news. What's on the news today? Apple says it is now handicapping its own apps in the App Store search results after analysts found they ranked first for the 700 search terms 700
Starting point is 00:10:26 top search terms uh this is according to new york times this is interesting you know it i really miss the days of early social media youtube and everything else where uh the crowd decided if your stuff was good uh you know it the beautiful part was you could actually go to YouTube and other different sources of video and news outlets, and not all news outlets, but there were the good ones that really rose through the ranks and became what the powerhouses they were today, Facebook, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:11:00 The crowd decided what was interesting and what was successful and what should be popular. You didn't have to game the system. You didn't have to pay for featured posts. I mean, nowadays the trending on YouTube is clearly mostly paid ads. And it's BS. I mean, it's no longer, it's basically, you know, it's basically, you know, companies feeding you stuff based upon who paid the highest price for it. And it's not crowdsourced as to what the most popular is.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But it's deceptive in going, this is trending. Well, it is trending because someone paid for it to trend. In the old days, it was popular because everyone liked it. Because it was cool and all that that good stuff now it's not and i really hate the new internet the biggest problem with youtube is is you can't make money on it if you're a creator you want to go on there and do stuff because the algorithm uh is just like the one that they're finding on apple now where it basically takes care of the top 10 uh the rich get richer and the poor get poorer,
Starting point is 00:12:05 an algorithm I call it. Basically, YouTube said, these guys are popular, so we're going to funnel all of our business to them and fuck everyone else. So you're not watching content on YouTube based upon how really funny it is, which to me is deceptive
Starting point is 00:12:21 because people go, oh, this guy must be really funny. And I go watch their videos and I'm like, Hmm, do you got to be like in a mental institution to think that's funny? I mean, that's not funny. It's just stupid stick. Uh, like it's just stupid physical comedy or stupid comedy or, or just dumb stuff. But, uh, youtube doing this they funnel enough money to them to where they can afford to do you know and eating tie pods and you know all that kind of crap it's like it's like hey you know what man why don't you just why don't you focus on like some intelligent content or something that's not true or whatever but you know i get it man they want views and
Starting point is 00:13:02 youtube has kind of moved away from that even now they're really focused on youtube uh tv they're really focused on working with broadcast networks to make youtube tv really prominent and selling it uh they just increased their price from like 40 or 45 bucks to 50 um and uh you know that's their real focus they're making more money they they're becoming a network so they don't give a shit about content makers so if you think you're gonna get on youtube and get rich man unless you got like the most unique idea that hasn't been tried in the last 15 years or however long youtube's been on was it 13 years uh the uh maybe it's 13 14 years uh wow okay good for that so we'll get to Apple here in a second. This is kind of interesting.
Starting point is 00:13:47 This is from Bloomberg, the China labor watch at the largest iPhone factory. 50% of the workers were temps in August, breaking a 10% limit set by China. Apple and Foxconn admit it was an issue. The new disposable workers, you know, it just gets worse and worse and worse the contract labor uh you know i hear more and more from my friends in silicon valley the contract labor you know they use them for three months to throw them away now i grew up in the age in a different age probably the one that most people don't remember unless they're my age uh where people still expected to go to work for a company for their life,
Starting point is 00:14:27 leave with a watch and a retirement account, and the city of it was like, good job, employee. And I remember watching that die in the 80s with the rise of Wall Street and investors being taken care of more than employees and huge layoffs and all this sort of good stuff. The rise of that gave way to this new thing and and more and more employees are going disposable it might work good for us i don't know in the long run it might work out to a way where um it will give employees more power
Starting point is 00:14:58 to be entrepreneurs and therefore they can stand on their own which is probably not going to be good for big business but i don't know man it's going to be interesting the way it goes. I mean, we're just reaching a new level of disposable employees and companies can do what they want and screw employees. So whatever, maybe we're just going to get back to, you know, in the early 1900s where people got so sick of this crap, everyone started unions and, uh, that flipped the switch but uh who knows um it's everything's in the pocket of big money these days and there doesn't seem to be the alternative so moving on from that uh the uh let's uh cover a few different things um this is interesting because apple on september 10th what is that that's That's like tomorrow. Holy crap. Tomorrow, three new iPhones.
Starting point is 00:15:46 Apple Watch Series 5. New Apple TV. Release info for the OS's. Pricing and launch date for Apple Arcade are coming out. This is according to TheVerge.com. You can go check that out. And they've got kind of an overview of what they think Apple is going to take in now. So you always have to be careful with these.
Starting point is 00:16:08 You never know exactly. Sometimes people make a lot of predictions and then find out differently. So there's that. Anyway, they're going to announce the new iPhone 11 lineup. I think that's pretty much expected because they do that every year at this time. So it would be really surprising if they did it so there's that there is kind of some interesting things they expect them to launch the models the iPhone 11 Pro the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone iPhone 11 okay replacing the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, respectively, just stupid names, in my opinion,
Starting point is 00:16:49 uh, anyways, uh, wow, I remember buying the, uh, iPhone 3, I think it was, that's when I bought my first iPhone, and there's now an iPhone 11, wow, I really feel, what is that, like, eight versions ago, or something? Holy crap. So someone has leaked. Mark Gurman posted this on Twitter. He leaked the alleged new iPhone case moldings. And it's kind of interesting. If you go to the Verge, you can see this.
Starting point is 00:17:18 But it's rumored to have three different cameras on the high-end version, two on the new lower-end version. No one really knows what they're going to do with all three cameras. They're claiming that there might be some reverse wireless charging. That's kind of interesting. I know that we've seen, I think there's at least one phone out now that will charge another device through the back of it. You just set it on the back of your phone and it will charge through it. So that's kind of interesting. I think it's
Starting point is 00:17:50 some headphones or something. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it should be pretty interesting. I'm kind of interested to see what they're going to do with three cameras. I mean, there's a lot my AT&T Samsung Galaxy phones do with live video, with alternative. You know, you can do a photograph with different aspects of bokeh, and you can have, you know, field of depth, different changes that you want to take and make in post, which is kind of interesting. Maybe that's what they're going to do.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I don't know. I suppose this is a new thing to do with phones, you know. I mean, you really can't do much, anything more with them except them making them incrementally better. And at the cost that they're going now, that just gets more and more expensive, the Samsung Fold has reemerged to come into the market, and that's going to be like $2,000. I mean, it's going to get to the point where you're going to be like, hmm, do I want to buy a new car or do I want to buy a new phone? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:47 I need to text people, but I do have to drive places. So I don't know, man. It's going to be kind of interesting. Samsung has got the reverse wireless charging feature I see here on the Verge thing where you can juice up a pair of the headphones. So it's rumored that they will juice up a pair of your AirPods, the little cigarette sperm drippers that you put in your ear. I just still can't.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Every time I see someone wearing those, I laugh. It's like vaping. I'm just like, really? You're doing that? So there's that. They're expected to upgrade Face ID to work at multiple angles and everything that should be great considering we everyone use that face app to take and give to the Russians so now they'll be able to unlock your iPhone Wow there you go of course I don't know I think you can hold up
Starting point is 00:19:38 like most people's Facebook profiles to it I don't know I have uh i'm not going to tell you where i have that featured actually on any of my devices but there's one device i have that on it seems nice but it seems pretty ambiguous where i'm really concerned as to whether it's really taking my face and doing something with it or whatever so um anyway they're kind of curious as to what it's going to look like how it's going to work uh there's all sorts of rumors of course as to as to what it's going to look like, how it's going to work. There's all sorts of rumors, of course, as to the next processor that's going to be in it. It's Haptek 3D Touch Experiment. There's been rumors that they're going to build the fingerprinting module into the screen. So you'll just touch the screen with your thumb instead of like a home button.
Starting point is 00:20:25 It will be interesting to see how that comes out uh let me know what your predictions are you can follow me on twitter.com for just chris voss or on uh anywhere under chris voss really chrisvoss.net etc etc you can follow me and uh see what you think over there the apple watch series 5 uh is also expected to launch that should be interesting with the new Watch OS. I don't know, man. I don't know how popular that is. I guess it's popular enough for them to keep updating it. There's going to be new Apple TV hardware with the faster processor that's rumored.
Starting point is 00:20:56 There's going to be an Apple tag that's going to be a Tile-esque Bluetooth tracking tag. Man, those just fail. Samsung's been doing it for like 10 years and and no one just ever does them i never meet anybody who's using the tags but i don't know if iphone wants to give it a shove maybe it'll work they're uh gonna have new ios out it's gonna be the mac ios or i should just call it mac os uh 10.15 catalina uh the i 13, iPad OS, watch OS, TV OS, the iPod. Everybody gets new updates for software. You get an update, and you get an update, and you get an update, and you get software.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Apple's like the Oprah of software updates. New services that are going to be coming out because that's what Apple is now. They are no longer an innovative hardware technology company. They just got services. And guess what? You can pay for them because you're not paying enough when you buy that umpteen billion dollar freaking phone. I really miss the old phone days. I'm starting to become that old man where I'm like, in my day, we had phones that were subsidized.
Starting point is 00:22:05 You only had to put $200 down, and they gave it to the phone. What does that sound like? This sounds like somebody in 70s TV or something. I remember in my day. I don't know. My day. There's a draw there. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:22:22 It's pulling from somewhere. I don't know. If you recognize it, ping me and tell me who it was. I don't know. It's just a draw there. I don't know. It's pulling from somewhere. I don't know. If you recognize it, ping me and tell me who it was. I don't know. It's just a bit there. I don't think it's the full coverage. But I think I created a new character. Old Man Voss.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Well, at least that's what I can call it. Old Man Voss Podcast, where we tell you kids to get off the fucking lawn. Oh my God, sometimes I crack myself up. Old Man Voss. I don't know, I guess I have a future podcast in me old man boss today we're gonna review the pen diapers why are they shit or just filled with shit why do i even read the news it's just come on here and ad lib i think i'm funnier when i ad lib but this is probably hopefully why you tune in because the rest of this shit isn't funny.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Anyway, getting back to the rumors on the iOS 13, there's going to be Apple TV+, which is going to be rumored to cost $9.99 per month because you didn't have enough $9.99 per month products. There's also going to be an arcade that's going to be $4.99 per month rumored because you just need more $9.99, $99, $99, $99 stuff in your life. That's just what it's all about, which is ironic because it's September 9th, the 99 on 19. And you know what? We're one minute away from nine. So I don't know what's going on. If you believe in numerology, we're either entering a time where a portal where the
Starting point is 00:24:13 whole world's going to be sucked into a nowhere land or infinity, or, uh, I don't know, a dual, uh, whatever. Uh, I clearly flunked physics. I didn't even take physics. So I couldn't flunked physics i didn't even take physics so i couldn't flunk it that's how dumb i am i don't know does that make any sense is there's any funny i don't know which anyway ramping up the release uh of the apple tv plus uh they've got a bunch of shows they're doing and i believe they have these shows that they're working on with different stars they're going to be on there so you can take and check that out as well uh you know it's going to be competing with everything else i mean it's just it's getting really stupid out there there's just so much different content providers you know netflix and disney now and apple tv and
Starting point is 00:24:57 and uh god what else is there's hulu and there's uh you know hulu's kind of spare with spotify now i actually get a good deal on hulu through spotify i don't even watch hulu but the deal is so good like it's just like whatever man i think it's like integrated into my old spotify payment so i'm like fuck it i just paying for what i had already uh and all that good stuff there's gonna be uh possibly a 16 inchinch MacBook Pro maybe announced or maybe later this year you can check that out as well they need to come out with something because they're getting all banned to fly on airplanes because people worried their batteries are gonna catch on fire which is kind of sad I mean I feel bad for I for Mac users but but you know a normal PC, man.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Seriously, get over it. So be sure to check that out. Those are some of the different highlights that are rumored. Let's make sure we cover that. The iPhone 11, Apple Watch Series 5, software updates, and more. According to TheVerge.com, you can go read more about it. This is kind of interesting. I thought in the scheme of things, an overview of potential challenges facing Facebook, Google, and Amazon from state attorney generals who have assistance
Starting point is 00:26:13 from the federal government, according to Tony Rome at the Washington Post. This is going to be kind of interesting to see how this shakes out. Now, it is semi-political as we've talked about before on the show but it is business and tech i mean part of when you're a big huge uh quote-unquote maybe monopoly company you've got to deal with this stuff uh microsoft had to deal with a monopoly antitrust attack by the attorney generals and president uh back in its day i certainly remember uh bill gates and stuff living through that fighting through that uh and fought very heavily. They weren't going to take it and they put up a, uh, it went on for a super long time. And, uh, I don't, I don't really think in the end they lost. I mean, uh, I don't think it really did much. I, it did, I think it did help the
Starting point is 00:27:02 rise of Google Chrome, but the browser and kind of squelched the uh internet explorer but an explorer was such a piece of crap really who i think in my opinion won out on that whole battle of the antitrust stuff uh because it was a battle of the browsers between nescape and internet explorer and um chrome wasn't out back then, but basically they were pushing it through their OS system for Windows, their browser, and there was a big fight over that. And really what Chrome did is just brought a better product to market. So really it was the market that took and stopped the dominance of Internet Explorer. And it's still such a crappy alpha product. Every time time I start up I want to shoot myself in the face so there's that what they should just do is just I don't pair with Google and resell it Google
Starting point is 00:27:55 really built just one hell of a thing but guess who's probably up for antitrust stuff of course Google is now so looks like they're going after these guys some of it may be political like they're going after these guys some of it may be political because they're concerned about big tech's influence and the scale back of their ability to manipulate um uh ads their ability to manipulate politics uh certainly the russia thing was a big deal um there's a lot of conservatives in the right wing thing that feel that these big tech companies are now censoring their content and some of their voting bloc so i'll leave that for you to decide but it's going to be kind of interesting how this politics impacts business and tech in silicon
Starting point is 00:28:41 valley and that's the play that we're talking about on the chrisoss Show. And of course, we have the election coming up in 2020. So there's a lot of pressure on everybody at this point. And clearly, it does seem to be that this is some sort of political sort of axe to grind and negotiating phase. So we'll see how that plays out. It's interesting that not all the state attorneys are on board with this. So I don't know follow that story you can check it out in the wapo
Starting point is 00:29:09 uh and everything else uh you know stuff with politics i mean it's politics are just part of business when you become big enough you've got to deal with them uh the verge has a review of the google nest hub max uh they claim it has a beautiful screen, a versatile camera. It has extensive smart home controls, but the sound is not powerful. Can't play Netflix. Whoa, there's a DL killer right there. And there's no camera shutter, so that's kind of interesting. Anyway, it looks like it's getting panned a little bit by The Verge.
Starting point is 00:29:42 You can check that out on their website. I haven't gotten a chance to play with it. I know that they've come out with their Google Nest camera. It looks like they're trying to kill off the ring, which I love the ring. But I don't know. It's almost like the ring is doing this whole weird thing where it's working with police officers and stuff and expanding its network. I don't know what's going on there. Like, is it the ring or the camera and Google Nest? I don't know what's going on there. Like, is it the Ring or the camera in Google Nest?
Starting point is 00:30:05 I don't know. Maybe Google's just finding both of them to see which one lives over the long term. Or maybe the Ring's going to be spin-off as some sort of, I don't know, street camera because that's basically what the police departments are doing with it. It'd be interesting to see how that does
