How are you, sir?
I'm doing well, Chris.
We're excited to have you, Dr. Cullum.
Give us your dot-coms, websites, social media.
Where do you want people to learn more about you on the interwebs?
Yes, I have a beautiful website at author david columnsr.com.
That's where you can go and you can find me.
I'm on social media.
I have different social media accounts.
And that's, you want to find me.
me that a website is one that you can get there.
Get too easy.
So give us a 30,000 over you.
What's inside this book?
Sir, I'll tell you, this book is, I'm excited because it's such a different book than I have ever read.
I've never heard anyone talk about faith being a sense.
And so when God gave me that, it really opened up something to me to know that everyone has faith.
And so the book talks about how everyone has faith, but I go into it and say that you have to develop that faith.
Even though you have it, you still need to develop it to get what God wants you to be.
Faith is an important part of the process of doing the thing there.
And so what prompted you want to write this book?
Was there an aha moment that you had that inspired you?
I tell you, when we were traveling as a church,
because I started the church in 2002, and we didn't get a permanent place to minister until about 2009.
So we were floating, we were going from different places, and the Lord was blessing us.
And one reason was because we had faith enough to believe that God was going to bless.
We didn't stop.
We kept going.
And so in 2009, when we received that permanent place,
place to minister for the Lord, God gave me a series of sermons. And the series of sermons were a name
developing your sense of faith. And so I preached that series. And it went from 2009 to about
2013. And so all of those sermons that God had given me to give to our church, he told
me to put it into a book.
Ah.
Not just for me, or not just for our congregation, but that the body of Christ could receive
what he had revealed to me.
So you put it in this book, and so you could share with people and get them familiar
with some of the things that you talked about.
What do you believe, why do you believe the message is especially important in today's world
these days. Chris, I tell you, we live in a fallen world and we live right now in a world that many
people are seeking to find a way out. God did not give us a way out. He gave us a way how to endure.
And how we endure certain things is that we use our faith. And by using our faith, we develop it
every day. And see, the problem is that sometimes people don't use their faith every day. They
worry about things and deal with things that they should put in God's hand. And God said,
if you allow me, he said, cash your cares on him, as the Bible says, cash cares on him,
because he cares for us. So in his caring for us, that takes us to a place where we don't have to
worry about anything. We know that God is in control.
Oh, knowing sometimes I think we worry, I was reading some stoicism over the weekend.
Sometimes we worry about things where about things that don't ever come to pass and we worry
about things. We're not good assessments of risk as human beings. We sometimes over-worry about
things that usually end up never happening. Like I do that all the time. I'm kind of a
kind of a strategist in that nature where I'm always like thinking about stuff and and the
variations and how I would approach those if they were to come about and some of its business
ordered but in real life some of the things that yeah it's just it's just interesting that way
could you tell us there's you open the book doctor with a story about not being able to feed
your family and a stranger on the third floor shows up with a month's worth of groceries
and tell us about what that story is about and maybe tease out a little bit of the meaning maybe.
I don't want you to give away too much of the book because people need to buy it to read it.
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
That was one of the beginnings of God showing me that faith was very, very important.
We can worry, like you were saying, that's just a part of human nature.
Worrying is, but we need to turn that.
worry into faith, believing that God's going to do it. And so as I was operating during that time,
I was working, I was in the military, wasn't making much money, and trying to do my best for the
church, for God. And I had to believe that God was going to do something for me. The first scripture
I ever learned was Proverbs, put to memory, was Proverbs 3, 5, and 6. And that says, trust in the Lord
with all your heart, lean not to your own understanding, and all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall
direct your path. And so I stood on that. I didn't know what was going to happen, but I was at work,
and I was talking to just doing my job. And next thing I know, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to
get some food in the house. The next thing I know, my wife called me. I was at work and I was on
the way to come home and she told me this guy that she never, she don't know, came down from
the third floor. He lived in our building. And he gave us five bags of grocery. And I'm wondering,
I said, Lord, this is, this is a miracle. Because I was praying that the Lord would give me away.
to get some money so I can buy some food.
But God said, no, I'm going to give you some.
And so that miracle really opened up my faith,
it's strengthened it some more, and I went forward.
And I just told, I gave that testimony,
and that's why I put it in the book,
because it's so miraculous.
God is still doing miracles every day.
Miracles are an interesting thing,
but that's, what a wonderful story.
So that comes from your life, then.
Yes, sir. I was the one who went through that. And that was, that was before I had started the church.
Oh, really? So that may be, did that maybe help you in your search for faith or God or the church?
Maybe by realizing the charity of someone else and the loving and caring of someone else help you try and figure out, how can I get some of this in my life, maybe?
Yes, yes. I.
The scriptures came alive to me during that time.
I read that God said, first seek ye the kingdom of God and all its righteousness.
And he said all these other things would be added unto you.
And that's food, clothing, housing.
He said, you ain't got to worry about those things because God would take care of that.
If you first seek the kingdom of God.
And seeking his kingdom just means to do your best to do what he told you to do.
When you do that, God has promised that he will take care of your everyday need.
That's what I stood on.
Yeah.
That's a pretty good promise, right?
Yes, it is.
Definitely.
Definitely.
One of the question I had for you is, are there some other.
parts of your personal journey that shape your understanding of the idea that about faith in God?
Yes, sir. That was the beginning. When that happened, that propelled me to believe God and trust God more and do
what he told me to do. Sometimes we want to trust God, but we don't do what he told us to do.
But so I decided to start doing exactly what God told me to do.
And as I, as my travels went, I dealt with going to war.
I went to the Gulf War.
And I saw some things over there.
I don't know how other wars are, but I saw God ministered to men that they broke down.
They was crying.
They was snotting.
They was doing all that and giving their lives to the Lord.
Because they didn't know if they was going to come back or not.
They were worried about that.
But I saw God break them down.
And in doing that, I understood that God could do anything but fail.
Because these were some hard men, warriors, soldiers who don't highly cry.
So the Lord do something in them.
And during that time, that was a lot of people that God used to do that, to talk and to preach and to talk to people.
And they received it.
And as they received it, when they did go out, they had a reassuring that they was going to be all right.
Even if they don't come back, they're going to be all right.
Because their faith told them that.
What a powerful message.
This is, this is, and during that time, God opened up some things to me where I could stand on his word and his, and believe who he was and what he has told me to do.
And so I walked that way into the future, knowing that he's able to do anything but fail.
Ah.
Now, with your life and everything that you've done, many people struggle to define or apply faith in their daily lives.
your book help bridge the gap between belief and real life practices? It is a practical book. It is a book that
gives you how to believe God. The book that gives you an understanding that everybody has faith.
And if you want to develop it, it shares on how to do that. I have a chapter in there that says
how to develop your faith.
And it gives you steps.
It gives you understanding of what you need to do to have that faith that you have already to develop.
But if we don't use our faith, it won't develop.
Use it or lose it.
I think there's something about that in the Bible, the talents, right?
Or something?
Yes.
Bear your talent or use your talent.
So how would you define faith in your words?
How would you put that?
Well, in the book, we talk about what faith is.
First of all, faith, we go to Hebrews 11 and 1.
Many people look at that as being a definition of faith.
Because it says faith is a substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
That's what that our scripture says.
But it's not a definition.
It's more of an explanation of what faith is, because you deal with that.
that word substance in there, it says faith is a substance of things hoped for.
That word substance in the Greek can be translated as title B.
So it would be faith is the title D of the things hoped for.
When we look at that, title D, if you have a title deed of a house or anything, it belongs to you.
Oh, I see. Just like the deed of a property.
Yes. Regardless of who lives in the property, that property still belongs to you because your name is on the title deed.
Oh, that's a good deal.
I dealt with it like faith is the title deed of things hoped for. But the title deed says you already own it.
I replace that word with faith is the actual possession.
of things hopeful.
Because you already possess it.
What a beautiful thing.
So if it belongs to you,
the things that you go through on a daily life,
all of the promises in the Bible,
all of the promises that God has given us,
they belong to you,
even though they haven't manifest themselves yet.
And what we are promised,
or we are promised that we will promise
that we will be saved. We will make it to heaven. Jesus said, He that endureth shall be saved.
So he promised us that. And so our faith tells us that's already happened.
We are, if we died, if I died today, I know that I'll be in heaven because God is already
promising I would be. That's pretty cool. My faith says that. That's pretty cool. That's kind of
What you want, you want to get into heaven because the other place I hear is a little too warm.
Yes, sir.
Now, you talk in the book, you split faith into two categories.
You have saving faith and then power faith.
Can you explain the difference between the two and what those look like in everyday life?
Yes, I tell you, that was a revelation that God gave me.
It's not too different faith.
It's one faith that's complete.
One without the other means that there's not a complete faith.
Saving faith is faith that gives you the ability to say, Lord, save me.
It is the faith that we have because everyone is given faith.
But the only way we can come to God is through saving faith.
And that's the faith that says, God, he so loved the world that whosoever believeth at him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
That you can grab in saving faith, and God will save you.
Now, that's not enough.
That's not the completeness of faith that God wants to have.
The next aspect of that is saving power faith.
And I call it power faith because it gives you the ability to,
change your circumstances and situations and bring them into the will of God. You have the power
in power of faith to deal with your situation that may not be going the way you wanted to go
or God wanted to go. You can speak to that situation through your power faith, which is a
complete faith, that that situation must come into alignment of what God has said.
And what God has said, that is what the end of it is about, or what it would be.
For the whole faith, after you have developed your faith, God has done so much for you and did so much and showed you that,
you have the power to speak things, to bring them into the will of God.
That explains the difference between power and saving faith.
In your perspective, what are some common misconceptions people have about faith?
Yes, sir. That is a good question.
There are some that believe, and we're talking about those that may not be saved,
They believe faith is a weakness or a crutch that people use instead of doing things on their own.
But that's not what faith is all about.
Faith is about knowing who God is, having a relationship with God,
and being getting the power of God to bring spiritual power into this natural world,
to defy the laws of nature, to change the laws of nature through your faith.
And the Bible has many examples of men and women who have done that.
That was a prophet in the Old Testament who dealt with an axe head, an iron axe head that was in the lake.
and that that axe head, that axe was borrowed.
And so that axe head needed to come or need to come back.
And so the prophet threw a piece of wood into the place where the axe head went down.
And the Bible said the axe head floated, still floated.
That's defying the laws of nature.
And so faith can do that for you.
you, but you have to develop your faith the way that God wants it to be.
Oh, that's an important thing.
That's an important thing as well.
How does your book challenge or clarify misconceptions people have about faith?
The book talks about practical things that I have been through, things that we as a church
have went through and how we have prayed and we saw God do some miraculous things for us.
the book has everyday challenges that has been met in that.
And so we know that these practical things can help people understand how to develop their faith
to the point where these challenges or weaknesses that people are talking about can be
defeated.
Yeah.
So the book gives those examples.
Your work emphasizes staying connected.
to God in all situations, how can readers begin to develop that consistency, especially if they're
on hard times?
My God, I'm excited about that because we all going to go through some hard times.
We all going to have some problems here, there.
I don't care who you came from or who you are.
Some things are going to happen because we live in a world that is not good.
It's sinful.
And so to deal with those things, we got to start at the beginning.
The beginning is, first of all, you've got to believe God that he is a waymaker.
He will take care of you and your everyday life.
I remember, and I have this in the book.
When I was working, I was working for a time for Avon, and I was making their products.
And I remember that I asked the Lord to help me do my job.
And if I mess up, God helped me to fix it.
And I dealt with that as knowing that God was going to do that.
And yes, I messed up a couple of times that I couldn't fix it myself.
And God made a way how that I was able to continue to work.
because sometimes you get fined for stuff like that.
But God made a way how I could keep going, and I gave them glory for it.
That's in the book that tells us, tell you that you can use your faith in everyday life.
Oh.
Yeah.
It can affect you in that way, can it?
Yes.
Yeah.
The other question I had for you, you've already taken steps to connect with readers
through the book, through interviews and book signings. I see that you have some book signing events
in your website. How is engaging directly with your audience influence your mission as an author?
Oh, I love engaging with people because I see, and I understand that this world really beats people up
all the time, and they need something to lean on. They need something to get them through.
And as I talk to people, I see, I hear the struggles that they go through.
And it encourages me to continue with this book and with I'm looking to finish writing,
another book that I have started.
And that is an offshoot of this book telling you more about faith.
And it deals with fear and what fear and faith is.
and how faith overcomes fear and things of that nature.
And so I'm doing as much as I can because God called me to do this.
He gave me a mission.
And my mission is to prepare souls for the new heaven and the new earth.
And the way that I'm doing that is by sharing what God has done for me
and all of the insights that he has given me to open up others' eyes and understanding to receive
what God has done for me and what he can do for them.
Now, looking ahead, do you envision your message of faith growing beyond the book?
Do you have any future books maybe in a follow-up to this you're considering?
Yes, I have one right now that I'm writing.
And it's dealing with fear is no match to faith.
And so I'm going to probably have that out sometime this year, but we'll see how that may work out.
And we're looking for the Lord to bless even on that because it goes deeper with the big aspect and understanding that faith can overtake some of these things that the physical senses and the physical body wants.
us to have. But God, his, his spirit is stronger. Jesus said the, the spirit is willing,
but the flesh is weak. So the flesh wanted what he wants. If the flesh is going to do what he
wants, and he wants everybody to serve him, the flesh does. But the spirit can be the stronger.
If we feed the spirit, whichever one we feed the most, that's the one that's going to win.
Ah, my flesh usually wants ice cream. So there's that.
Let's see. Now, for people who come across your work, what do you believe such your voice and the message you're sending you're talking about apart from faith-based space, other people in the face space space?
As I said before, I haven't seen a book of this magnitude or a book that expresses faith in the way that this book expresses it.
My book is talking about faith as being a sense.
I haven't seen anyone because the Lord, God, when he first created man, the Bible says he molded man from the dust of the ground.
And then he breathed into his nostril, the breath of life.
And he became a living soul.
So the body was the dust.
but the spirit God had breathed into him.
And when God breathed into him, he gave him his likeness and his image.
And the likeness and image of God is faith, because man had to operate in the spiritual world somehow.
And so he gave him that spiritual sense to be to connect with him.
And everyone that's born has that sense of faith.
Now, God, he's the first one who ever used faith.
When he said, let there be, his faith was going into action.
Oh, wow.
Let there be.
Let there be light.
There was no light.
But he believed that there was going to be some light.
Because he said, let there be.
Ah.
And so that image and that,
likeness was placed in man. Every person receives it. But until we connect with God, it will not be
what it's supposed to be. You got to connect first. That we can enjoy it and all that good stuff there.
Yes, sir. I'll see. After readers finish the book, what transformation do you hope
takes place in their relationship with God and how people live their daily lives? I'll tell you. I'm
excited about the book because it tells you step by step how to get closer to God, how to have an
active relationship with God. And that relationship will help you to live your life, as Jesus said.
Jesus said, the thief came to steal, kill, and destroy. But I have come that they may have
life and life more abundantly. So that faith that we have will enable us to have that life and life more
abundantly. But our life and the abundant life is not just for us. It's for those that we come in
contact with. We come, God gives the faith, the developed faith to a person to help somebody else
receive the same thing.
We can't be selfish.
I have that in the book, that
developed faith will help you
not to be selfish and
not to be self-centered.
Oh, that's really important.
All of that is build
and that builds itself
in this book.
And so that's what makes it different.
And I want people to
receive what God has given,
that they would be able
to walk the life.
that God want them to walk.
Because you can't do it.
You can't say you have faith
if you don't obey God.
Yeah.
That's very true.
Do you have an anticipated a release date for this other book?
No, I don't.
Not yet.
Because I haven't really put it to a publisher or anything of that nature.
So I got to get that together.
Got to get it together there.
But it sounds like you will and we'll get that issued and out.
And yeah, it should be a good,
it should be good for everybody to learn these principles and things so they can take advantage of
them. So as we go out, give people a final pitch on where they can find out more about you,
get up to speed on what you're doing, and, of course, order the book.
Amen, I tell you, thank God for you, sir, for having me on your show.
