The Adventures of Salt & Pepper by Naomi S Zeavin https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Salt-Pepper-Naomi-Zeavin/dp/B0DJX31L5R Salt and Pepper are twin sisters. They were born in a puppy mill. B...ut they were rescued, and now they live together in a loving home. But they remember what it was like in “that” place, and they want to help others. In her book The Adventures of Salt & Pepper, author Naomi Sokol Zeavin shares the story of these two twin puppies. Through pictures and words, you will see how animals need help and kindness from people. Many animals are born in puppy mills-like Salt and Pepper-or left on the street to take care of themselves. Salt and Pepper save the day by having a FUN-raiser, to get money to help all animals. The Adventures of Salt & Pepper is educational, teaching children the importance of working together … with people of all different demographics. Using pictures of real dogs and youngsters, the author shows step-by-step strategies to reach a collaborative goal that children can easily relate to. -Jill RobinPayne, MA, LPC-S, LCDC

Starting point is 00:01:21 review of any kind. Today's featured author comes to us from Books to Lifemarketing.com. UK. With expert publishing to strategic marketing, they help authors reach their audience and maximize their book success. We've got an amazing folks on the show with us today. We're talking about her book, but she's a little sick, so we have a stand-in for her. We'll get into that. She's the author of the latest book we'll be profiling today through the help of her. And it is entitled, The Adventures of Salt and Pepper, out October 12, 2024. You can find it by Naomi S.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Zeevan. And we're going to be talking today with John Greenhill. John, what's your relation to Naomi again? Yeah, I married to her. And so, her husband. So she had these dogs
Starting point is 00:02:15 as a most remarkable relationship. The story, and she wanted to teach the children about how dogs feel and how people field, basically. Yeah, and dogs are amazing. Does she have a dot-com, or I think
Starting point is 00:02:33 you said she had some YouTube channels? What are some references people can look her up on the interwebs? She's on her, she's got her YouTube. She was a historian. She was a historian for the local area called Fairfax County, and she was a historian
Starting point is 00:02:50 for 20 years. And so her YouTube are called History Speaks. If you look up History Speaks on YouTube, and Naomi Zeevan, or S-even, you'll find these YouTube videos and the historical videos and stuff like that. Nice. Good stuff. So was this her first book? No, she's written several other little books about her ancestors.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Her grandfather came from Poland and she's of a Jewish persuasion. and the cemetery in a place called Augusto and the German destroyed it she found the destroyed the cemetery and under the communists she went back and rebuilt the cemetery
Starting point is 00:03:39 in Augusto and she produced a video called Return to Augusto so that's on her video Oh good stuff A gold war to go So tell us Who this
Starting point is 00:03:53 Oh go ahead Tell us who this salt and pepper were and how long did she have them she had them maybe for 15 years and she found them in a pound and she nursed them back to health and she took she took the photographs in the in the pepper and salt book you can see photographs of these two dogs there were actually three dogs but their attitude was human and they sort of became human beings to her yeah yeah and so why did she decide to write a book about them what was the motivation she wanted it she's now got great grandchildren when you're 92 oh she's 92 wow
Starting point is 00:04:41 she wrote these books about her dogs and how they how they work the problems they had in the world which reflects problems the children have in the world today and so they've become a guy like a guide and they she heard this book she didn't intend to have a large publication she wrote her for her grandchildren well there you go but some publisher
Starting point is 00:05:09 have found it and it said this will appeal to a much bigger audience oh yeah yeah most definitely I mean people love their animals we have a relationship with animals sometimes it's better with other humans I you know I've had about four huskies now I think we're going on five next year.
Starting point is 00:05:26 I'm going to be adding something to the family. You know, they really get in your heart. They give you that unconditional love and humans don't seem to be very unconditional loving these days. And they're just wonderful to have. And boy, they sure get in your heart. And when you lose them, sadly, they don't live very long compared to humans.
Starting point is 00:05:45 They lose them. Oh, it's almost painful than losing a human. Yeah. Sometimes, I would say it depends on. the human mean to say but it's kind of true there are some people that when they pass you're just like they had that coming so anyway if you see the photographs you'll see a white dog and a black one they're called pepper and salt they had a son a mentor called meadow but that was another dog but the mentor doesn't she's got doesn't have many photographs of the mentor but
Starting point is 00:06:24 The meadow says, let me go, we go, let's go and have ventures and have things that go on. And this is the book. They go through these adventures that do hire the two dogs and the meadow. It's still quite a remarkable story. And were they really two twin puppies? Yeah, they came from the same litter. Okay. One was black and one was white.
Starting point is 00:06:50 She named them pepper and salt. pepper i like that i love it now were they it looks like they might have been miniature poodles what breed were they yeah i think they were miniature poodles yeah definitely small yeah my uh salt and they were born in puppy mills evidently and she saved them from the puppy mills and and nursed them back to health i guess they weren't being taken care of you said yes that's good and this is going on today there are several societies that try and rescue dogs, you know, and the people who read this book find it, it's a sort of, the attributes are very human in a sense of, you know, exploring the world
Starting point is 00:07:39 and having misadventures and what happens when things go wrong, what, and how you cope with that type of problem. Yeah. And dogs are so great at reading us, they're so good at understanding us. You know, my dogs know when I'm a pain, when I'm upset, you know, they'll come around more often and if I'm upset, they'll try and suit me. If I seem like I'm stressed or
Starting point is 00:08:04 maybe if I don't feel well, they tend to really tune in if I don't feel well if I get like the flu or something. There's Naomi. She's got out of bed. You can speak to her director. This is Chris boss. Hi, Naomi. How are you doing? I wasn't doing
Starting point is 00:08:20 well, but I'm better now. All right. Welcome to the show. Welcome to the show. We're live on the show right now. Yeah. And we've just been talking about your amazing book. Do you want to tell us your version on the overview of this book and your words? They're from a puppy mill. And I don't know if everybody knows what a puppy mill is. But it's where people just keep having babies and poor dogs just keep having babies. Yeah. Sounds like Utah. I was sort of lonely one day and a girlfriend. said, come with me.
Starting point is 00:08:54 And she came and she got me two dogs. And she took them in my hands. And so then I took them home. And once I got them home, they had lots of ideas of their own and their own adventures.
Starting point is 00:09:10 They wanted to do good work for homeless dogs. Oh, wow. So this is what they started to do. And by doing, this, they were talking to each other. And I took all the pictures in the book. And you can see them talking and arguing. But they have a great deal of love. These dogs have a great, great deal of love. And that's what people like about the salt and pepper book. So big dog said, let's have a fundraiser. they have a fundraiser, a F-U-N
Starting point is 00:09:55 fundraiser, who raise money for dogs that have no holes. Oh. They hear the dogs. They raised a lot of money, and then they went to, what they
Starting point is 00:10:14 did was they decided to have a baseball game for fun. And you should see the picture are really cute. The hair gets in their eyes. And he really, he really did it pretty hard.
Starting point is 00:10:31 He got a home run. And so they collected a lot of money. No, that's wonderful. Who is the book targeted to? Is it targeted towards young children or is it targeted to everybody? I think it's to everybody who has any love in their heart. because these dogs have no home, they have no love, and all of a sudden they have love. And this is so important in life to give love, to get love.
Starting point is 00:11:04 And so when they're doing all these things to raise the money and they gather up all the different dogs, so that shows that there's a whole bunch of different animals. and they're not just white, black, and pink, all different kinds of animals are working together to get these kids so they can have a fun fundraiser. Ah, yeah. Yes, so then in the end, they say, where are you going? And they say, oh, there's lots and lots of things
Starting point is 00:11:47 and good things to do in this world and we're going to do that and they go sort of shuffling off into the down the hill and but the good thing is that people get to love the dogs it goes right to their heart it's not just saying oh we love you these these dogs are really neat and I love them so much and missed them. The thing was, when I first got the dog, a very odd thing happened. And salt just went on the floor like that's straight out like that. And I picked him up and I just loved him and I brought him back. So when they're in these puppy mills, they're not 100% safe.
Starting point is 00:12:47 strong and so they need this extra love from all of us you know they need as much love as they can they give a lot of love that's a beautiful part about dogs they give love and they kind of know when you need some extra love and support and different things like that they're about money how they raise money and i put the dollar and that has pennies which will be worth a lot because no one has pennies anymore. Oh, that's true. And they charged a dollar a ticket to get to the ballgame, and they had to get into the newspaper to try to get some people. So their adventures are our adventures, really. Oh, that's really nice. And I mean, you mentioned getting along and the different colors of the dogs. Is it kind of a statement as to how, you know, with race and people, we should
Starting point is 00:13:43 learn to get along that is definitely work together i suppose they said you go down there and you sniff that tree and then the other one says no you go and go in the trash and so they're all giving different ideas and so they're working together and that's good that's a good frame for us to be reminded of we all need to work together we all need to lift each other up rising tide lifts all boats as we like to say on the Chris Fosha. And, you know, you can live from scarcity or abundance mindset, and your results will differ. What made you want to write this book? Are these the first dogs you've ever had? Or did it just kind of come to fruition under their stead? In the summer, they have a place for actors. I think of the name of the last year. I've been
Starting point is 00:14:42 Waterford, Connecticut. And it had a table out just for me. Oh, Eugene O'Neill. Oh, Eugene O'Neill Theater. And I, it hit me that I'll sit at that table that summer and write that book. So it was really my own table, which was nice, and the water was right out there. And the Eugene O'Neill Theater, they help everybody. They help different people, writers, new writers. I don't know that. But that's what they do, always helping people. But that's how I got into writing about salt and pepper.
Starting point is 00:15:27 And I tell you, my sons would laugh at them. They'd slide on the floor. And they were so fun. I was so proud of them. I'd take them both to school and I walk them around the Lincoln Memorial one cherry blossom time and I was just so proud of them. I guess they were my babies. They really do get into your heart. I've had four huskies now and boy, they crawl in your heart, boy.
Starting point is 00:16:03 I always tell people the more I get to know people, the more I love dogs. Yes, I think you're right. They just have such a wonderful, loving entity. They know when you're hurting. They know when you're sad. They know when you're down. I think they know when you're off. Mine are always checking me out going,
Starting point is 00:16:26 oh, he's still alive. I guess we have to put up with them one more day. What kind of dog do you have? Huskies. I've had four. And then I had some, I think I had some other dogs, a boxer and a I think
Starting point is 00:16:41 my children have dogs and the family have dogs, cats and you name it and I want to tell you one thing to tell the children this is sort of interesting my son was an Eagle Scout
Starting point is 00:16:56 and he got a little quarter a turtle that they don't sell anymore and he put it in the water and I would go in there to show them how animals can
Starting point is 00:17:13 feel things. And I would sing, I'm in love with you, Clarence, and I'd get his head. And his little legs would go, go, go, go, go. And that showed people that that turtle
Starting point is 00:17:29 had feelings. Oh, wow. Feelings are important. Last time I checked, I don't know. so when people come away with the book what do you hope they come away with when they read it to take care of the homeless animals you see these videos of those sad dogs and it really does break your heart and if everybody would just get a dog or give a dog as a gift that would be great A wonderful Christmas present this Christmas.
Starting point is 00:18:08 That's true. And people really need to learn how to take care of dogs, too. I think that's a big issue, wouldn't you say? Yes, uh-huh. Yeah. You know, I don't know what it is, but it seems like I always end up living next to somebody who just locks their dogs outside and it forgets about them. And then you'll hear them barking 24-7, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:29 and it's that pitiful bark that, you know, they're just, you're like, Dude, you're, why do you have dogs? You have dogs as a security accessory. And sometimes they're not even security dogs. You know, I can understand if you got Doverman or German Shepherd. But yeah, it's kind of interesting how people treat animals, right? I was looking in the newspaper the other day. And then they had right next to my article, what I say about my dogs.
Starting point is 00:18:56 And they had all these people had animals as football. or for the football game, and I never even thought about it. And there they go running out on the field with their animal. Uh-huh. Did you ever think about that? Yeah. That they have those animals, they could be ghosts or whatever. They take part in society.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Yeah. I mean, yeah, I've seen the animals that they play, and they're like the, I don't know what you call them, but yeah. Yeah, most definitely. as we go out give people your final dot coms where can people find you on the interwebs etc etc thank you very much for having me on and your people great people work for you thank you and and any dot coms do you have any dot coms or your youtube channel you want to plug so people can check that out as we go oh yes i'm on youtube i have 37 videos on youtube a lot of civil
