Alan Brillhart is a Christian who is striving to increase his spiritual relationship with
God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and the Living Word.
He is a retired physician who spent 50 years of his life distant from God.
And after a great deal of tribulation, he started to search for a new life, which began
with reading the Holy Bible and the Word of God.
Welcome to the show.
Ellen, how are you?
Ellen Lipsetter I'm very good.
Thank you very much for having me, Chris.
I really appreciate this.
It's really an honor and it's a lot of energy in your show and hopefully we can talk about
the energy in the Bible and the energy in this book and relate to each other that way.
Well, you run off caffeine, so hopefully there's a lot of caffeine in those books.
I'm just having fun.
So give us your dot coms.
Where can people find you on the interwebs?
Well, the best place to find me as far on the internet is with my publisher right now.
It's at Westbowpress.com. And you can see me, you can find me there on the search. And
also, there's a website that's coming out that's going to be called the word that loves you dot-com
That'll be active in a few a few days and we also have
several links that are being connected to
Different sites, you know social media and things like that coming out too. So that work we're a new book
Made on that's a new book. It's only been out a few months, so very excited
about it.
I just recently won a global award for the best book in spirituality for 2025 by the
Independent Authors of Global Association. I was very surprised about that, the winner
award in the first six months of being published.
Pete Slauson Well, congratulations!
Dr. C. Borgman Thank you very much. Thank you.
Pete Slauson So, give us a tease out. The word that loves
you according to the book is begin, is that correct?
Dr. C. Borgman Begin is the first of a sequel.
Pete Slauson Okay. is begin is that correct begin is the first of the sequel okay the word that loves you refers to
the living word of god and there are really different interpretations of what the living
word of god is but uh in the beginning as the bible says there was the word and the word was
with god and the word was god and actually the word the the living word, created the universe, supposedly, from the
biblical standpoint.
But the word of God is a living word is also associated with what the Bible is called the
living word, and it's also associated with Jesus Christ who was considered the living
word.
So, so many different ways you can look at it,
depending upon what your
knowledge is of the subject, and you can see how important it is, but it really is a living
document that was created
by God to bring us to an understanding of how he wants us to
work and in our lives to help him.
Pete So, you have in the book study questions and commentaries related to each important
topic that you have.
Tell us some of the topics that are in the book.
Dr. C. C. C. First of all, I'll tell you something in general.
I wrote the whole book in Bible verses of initially.
Pete Mm hmm. I'll tell you something in general. I wrote the whole book in Bible verses initially.
I went to the people that own the rights to the ESV Bible
and they said you can only use 25% of your book,
it can only be 25% of your book that is full of verses.
The rest of it has to be commentary or it has to be questions or some sort of opinions.
So I had to rewrite this book originally from the first part, and I did that with the help
of the Holy Spirit who I really think helped me through this in three weeks, I read the
whole book.
And it was up day and night just doing it, just rolling out.
One of the things that I decided to do was to put in the verses in this book that brought
me to become a Christian, that took me to see Jesus Christ and forgive my sins and ask
for forgiveness of my sins and become a Christian that took me to see Jesus Christ and forgive my sins and ask for forgiveness of my
sins and become a Christian. And I had a lot of problems trying to really understand what
direction I was going with Christianity until I really started reading the book. But then I
decided to just make notes, keep notes of the verses that are important to me. I tried to
put them in the book, and I ended up doing that. And there were topics that are important to me. I try to put them in the book, and I ended up doing that.
And there were topics that were important to me, too, because a lot of times when you
want to study something that's so important to you, you want to know what area you're
talking about.
For instance, the first chapter is on the Fall.
It talks about the sinful nature of a man and why we need, eventually,
why we need help. We can't really get through eternal life by being distant from God because
we are sinners, so our sins have to be cleansed and go away so that we can be more like Jesus.
But the first part, the first chapter is called
The Fall, and it takes place in the Garden of Eden. A lot of people know about that,
but...
Pete Oh, I've heard that story.
Pete Then there's the second section or books, chapter of the book is called Forgiveness.
And Forgiveness is about how Jesus came to forgive us.
And he knew that we couldn't do it.
We couldn't be forgiven without his help.
God sent him to come to earth
and to teach us how to live a sinless life
and how to follow him.
And that forgiveness is the foundation of forgiveness
and of sin is from Jesus Christ. And that forgiveness is the foundation of forgiveness
of sin is from Jesus Christ.
There's no other way.
Some of the sins we just can't,
we can't be forgiven without him.
So the forgiveness part and his blood was shed for us
as a ransom to provide justice in God's mind to pay the
price for our sins.
And the next part is faith.
The next chapter is faith.
Faith is about how you should have faith in God, you should have faith in the living Word,
you should have faith in Jesus Christ and you should have faith in the Holy Spirit. All of those things are important because if you don't believe in
those things, you get distracted and you turn into an even worse sinner.
The next chapter is about the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit talks about
what happens when you become a Christian? Transform you're transformed into producing certain fruits and the Bible uses the fruits in a way
They call them the fruits of the Holy Spirit now the Holy Spirit lives in a Christian's heart. He's given to
the the Christians when we're baptized and when we
take Jesus to be our Lord and Savior and
But it's also important to know that the Holy Spirit
lived in Jesus Christ. He was His best buddy throughout His life. In fact, the Holy Spirit
was important for His birth from Mary. His Holy Spirit was important for carrying Him through all
The Holy Spirit was important for carrying him through all of the problems that he encountered, especially during the crucifixion.
Holy Spirit was there to take him to heaven.
So the Holy Spirit is left in the Christians after we were born again, so to speak, and
left in the Christian's heart.
So what manifest stations of that are that people become kinder,
they can become more gentle, they're more loving, they're more peace-seeking, they're more gentle,
they are better people, they're good people, and there's nine different fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Now, if you don't have those fruits, you're basically not a Christian. So, that's why that's important,
because God, that's one way God and other Christians can tell if you are a Christian,
is by the way you live. And by the way you live shows how good you are, so to speak. Pete Slauson No, sir, go ahead. Pete Slauson The next one is bringing others to Christ for salvation. You know, John 3.16 says,
God sent His only Son to the world so that those who believe in Him should have eternal life.
In this particular situation, bringing others to salvation is so important, and it's really a way of
glorifying God if we bring other people that we know to become Christians.
And the next one in the book is, and the last one is, frequent prayer.
Prayer is so important because, as Martin Luther said, who was a historic
Christian figure in Germany hundreds of years ago, he said that Christians are
born to pray just like humans are born to breathe.
In other words, if you're not praying every day, you're not praying for advice
from God, just like Jesus prayed, and you're not praying through the Holy Spirit just like Jesus prayed on a regular basis
You're essentially not breathing Christianity. Mm-hmm. And so it's a very it's a vital connection and communication
so all of these these are basically a
These these topics are the what I consider the foundations of
these topics are what I consider the foundations that early Christians should look to and learn about and study, and hopefully this book will bring other people to Christ by doing that.
Pete Slauson
Well, tell us about your journey, because it sounds like you, when I read your bio,
it said that you kind of spent the
first 50 years not really religious or not really studying this sort of stuff. Fill us in on how
you're raised, what influenced you, kind of what brought you to believing in what you believe.
Dr. Craig Larson
That's a great question, because that's one of the reasons that I wrote the book,
because I want to clarify what brought me to being a Christian. And that's why I took the verses, and reading the Bible became very important to me, and
studying it and understanding these basic principles were what I thought were the most
important things that a Christian should learn initially.
That's why we have to begin after it.
But in my particular case, I went to many different churches in my life.
My dad was a 33-year veteran of the Army.
He was in three wars.
He was in the Second World War.
He was a sniper in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was one of the infantry divisions that opened the gates to Dachau near Munich.
And he was also in the Korean War,
did two tours there in the Korean War.
And he was in the artillery then.
And then in the Vietnam War, he would work for the CIA.
So he was more of a political person that really worked with the South Vietnamese to
help them manage the people in the ways that we wanted to see them turn out.
So he spent so much time in the military, but with 33 years, I was born during the Korean War, and he traveled.
I must have moved over 40 times.
Pete Slauson Oh, really?
Well –
Dr. Cusack So, I went to many different churches, had different people telling me all these
things about Christianity and all these different things.
And my mother was a Christian, and she was Southern Baptist, she was a Christian,
and she would talk to us, but we never really had a consistent, clear understanding of what a Christian
was supposed to mean, what it really meant. So I was always looking for that, and so that's why
I say that I was kind of like a very fledgling Christian all my life, distant,
because I didn't really realize that my sinful nature was really causing me to spend a lot
more time trying to be successful in the world than to try to do what Christ and what God
wanted me to do with my life.
But anyway, it was a personal thing. So, being away from God in a sense means that
I was not communicating with Him. I was not really truly baptized in the way that I should
have been. I was not educated in the ways of what I should be. And I went through a lot of things. I was very successful. I was always like top in my class.
I was in college and I was top in my ROTC classes
and stuff like that.
And I got a full scholarship to go to medical school
before they had the Army Medical School,
I mean the Armed Forces Medical School.
And I always did well, but for some reason,
I just never was really, I never felt like
I was really accomplishing what I should.
I was working hard, I was a trauma surgeon, an orthopedic trauma surgeon for 25 years,
and it just seemed like even though I was helping people, I really just didn't have... something was
missing. At one time, I went to church, I went to church, and there was a minister there,
there was a guest minister, he came from somewhere from Texas, I think, and I was in Jacksonville,
Florida, stationed there, and because I was in the Navy, I mean, from the scholarship I was in the Navy 20 years.
Pete Oh, really?
Dr. Cusack Yeah.
So, I was in a situation where I was asked if I'd ever been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
And I know I'd been christened, well, I was sprinkled with water at one time, and I was so-called baptized,
maybe in name in the Holy Spirit,
but I never was really baptized,
I thought, in the Holy Spirit.
So I figured I'd go up there and let this man
baptize me in the Holy Spirit.
And I went up there and he poured oil on me
and he talked about it.
And literally, it affected me physically.
I mean, in fact, I couldn't even stand up after that.
I had to sit down on the floor.
So I felt this rush of energy and peace and joy coming into that body, which was—a lot
of people would think, well, that's kind of strange, because when they're baptized,
even though they feel this spiritual presence of the Holy
Spirit, a lot of people still think maybe that was just something that was psychological
as opposed to spiritual.
But it really was a spiritual event.
Pete Yeah.
I mean, it was for you.
I mean, the person who experiences it, that's, you know, that's their experience, right? And some people, when the Holy Spirit comes into their lives, it's not a joyful thing.
In other words, if you talk, I talked to a prisoner last week, and he said when the Holy
Spirit came into his life, he scared him to death.
Really?
Because he became fearful of God, because God was going God because God's wrath was going to come
down on him from what he did.
So, he knew that he better follow the ways of God.
So, the Spirit can come into your life in different ways.
It can make you feel like you finally found something you were looking for, or it can
make you feel like, I better get my act together, or I'm
going to go down instead of up, so to speak.
So, it doesn't just necessarily affect everybody the same way, but the Holy Spirit made a tremendous
difference and the Holy Spirit was there to lead me in prayer, was leading me in the ways
of walking in Jesus Christ, But I really, really didn't
get it, really connect everything until I really started reading the living Word of God, the Word
of God, and then write this book. It really is kind of a way that I finally understood what I
was supposed to do with Christianity. So, had you ever read the Bible before?
Pete I've read parts of it, but not like this.
Pete But it was until you kind of accepted the belief and focused on reading the material
and getting to know it really well that it gave you more meaning, is that correct?
Pete But you have to understand that the Holy Spirit had the most effect on me.
It had the most effect on Jesus when he was alive, when he was on the earth, it guided
him and, you know, I never thought that that type of spiritual presence was possible in
me.
But once I realized it was really a real deal, I mean, it changed
my life.
Pete Yeah.
Pete And it tends to change a lot of people's lives when they find whatever spiritual interest
is or, you know, what they have. It can make all the difference in the world. And sometimes,
you know, people, they're missing something in their lives and they go through their lives
just going, I wonder, you know, what I'm missing?
Is there a part somewhere that I'm not getting or something like that?
And so, a lot of people go through that.
In your book, you talk about different aspects, the fall, forgiveness, faith, salvation, the
fruit of the Spirit, and frequent prayer.
Do you want to tease out maybe some of maybe any one of those topics just to tease
it out to people to get them to pick up the book?
Dr. Craig Larson I can tell you this, the most profound, people
have to, the protagonist in the Bible is Jesus Christ. I mean, he's the star figure. The
whole, even the Old Testament leads you to Jesus Christ eventually. And that's really, really an important thing.
But two of the basic principles that we talked about
were the fall and forgiveness.
And to me, the most difficult thing for people to do
is to forgive other people.
And God says, if you don't forgive other people,
you will not be forgiven. So
that means, and if you're not baptized in the Holy Spirit and baptized in water, Jesus
said you won't see heaven.
So those, forgiveness is essential if you can't forgive somebody else. Now let me tell you why I think that that is so profound, because
if you want to be able to forgive somebody, you can't forgive people that you think are
unforgivable. You agree with that? Yeah. So how can you do that? You have to have Jesus Christ in your heart to do it. Jesus was on the cross
And he was being crucified and he was suffocating and he was bleeding to death
He was praying
Through the holy spirit with to to god his father
He says forgive them for they know not what they do.
What he was doing was, he was forgiving somebody who was killing him.
He was forgiving somebody who were sinners.
He was forgiving the people that he wanted them forgiven.
Now, why would that be so significant? Why would that be
important? Just imagine his mother sitting there at the foot of the cross seeing her
son die and try to forgive those people that were killing him.
Yeah, that's not fun.
But she could do that. She could do that. but it's only because she had the Holy Spirit, she had God, and she understood her son, what his purpose was. Now, people cannot
forgive people who do bad things to them. They just can't do it. So, you have to be a Christian
to do that. Now, in my family, my brother, when he was 32, my youngest brother,
when he was 32, was murdered.
Oh, wow.
And he was stabbed to death. And he, his, the man that murdered him was somebody who was like a drifter type of guy.
He wasn't really much of a person, as we would say, in the standards of the country.
But anyway, he was put in jail, and my dad, who had fought many wars, had seen all sorts
of death, killed the people himself, and all of this, went to the Bible,
and wanted to know what he was supposed to do to make things good in his mind, because
he couldn't stand the fact that this guy had just killed my brother. you can imagine what his thoughts were.
Oh, yeah.
He would probably want to revenge.
But what does Jesus say about that?
Jesus says, you can't do anything without me that's significant.
You can't forgive people unless you follow me because he says I am the vine, you are
the branches, and you can't live without me.
What he's saying is you can't, unless you forgive people, even your enemies, now I'll
get to the end of it in a't, you still are a sinner.
You're still a sinner because you're not forgiving people, because I came here to forgive
people.
I didn't come here to condemn them.
So if you can't forgive those people, then you will not be forgiven.
But how can somebody, it's only through using Him and praying to Him and asking Him.
So my dad went to the Bible and read the Bible
part where it said you were supposed to forgive your enemies.
Now how many enemies do you think my dad encountered in his life? Thousands.
Yeah. So he came down the stairs and he said to my sister, my younger sister, I
think the answer is that God wants me to
forgive my enemies.
Wow.
So he and my mother went to the prison, met with a prisoner who had killed my brother
and forgave him.
Wow.
That's powerful.
That takes a lot of moxie.
Well that's where we're supposed to be led to, and you can't do that without having
Jesus Christ standing right inside you, or the Holy Spirit working with you.
And that's where God wants us to go.
He wants us to be sanctified, made holy, and when we get into heaven we'll be given bodies
similar to His that don't have a sinful nature.
So the first two chapters, the fall, understanding the sinful nature of man, was inherited from
Adam, and the new Adam, Jesus Christ, we call the new Adam, he's the one that came to the
world to forgive all our sins.
Pete Okay.
Dr. Cusack But even those sins that are horrific. So those two first chapters mean a lot to
me personally. Having faith and understanding that is a little easier to understand. Having
faith in God and that. And the other two chapters, I mean the other ones, Spirit, you know, showing that, that comes naturally with being a Christian.
And then the finding others for Christ is just a way of glorifying Christ by teaching
them the gospel, the good news, that Jesus died for them and all their sins will be forgiven.
And there's only one sin that won't be forgiven, and that's arguing or denying or blaspheming
the Holy Spirit.
So if you just say, I'm not going to listen to you, I don't believe in you, and I don't
allow that, that'll never be forgiven.
But everything else, even the murder, is forgiven.
Why wouldn't God, who created human beings for His glory, why wouldn't He want them
to turn good and get rid of all
their evil? And so, they accept the first death all humans inherited physically because
of Adam and Eve. They would surely die because they ate the fruit. So those people, those
people that ate the fruit and all the people that followed have a sinful nature.
Now, if you're going to die, do you want to die just from your human being?
And then what's left is your spirit. What about your spirit?
You want to live forever in heaven with Christ.
And you can do that.
Just because you die physically doesn't mean your spirit dies.
So if you become a Christian and you follow what God wants you to do, and you follow the
Holy Spirit, you can live forever in heaven.
And that's the whole part about the first two,
the two books that are important. But the rest of it is just to glorify God, to maintain your
steadfastness and not to revert back to sinful nature in your prayers and stay on the right path
with the Holy Spirit. That's what prayer is all about. And then the part about bringing others to Christ
is simply God wants you to harvest as many people
as you can to come to heaven with him.
And that's really what that's about.
So all these points are important,
but I really think the first two mean the most to me.
So now the book is a series. Tell us about
the upcoming series as we round out the show.
Dr. Craig Larson Well, the next plan was the word that loves
you, love. It's all about God's love, because God's love is a lot more important than our love. God's love is unconditional. Even though we're sinners,
God still loves us. Even though we've criticized His Son, even though we don't want to do this,
we don't want to do that, and we want to get revenge and everything, we still can be forgiven. The only thing that we can't be forgiven for is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. But God's love... human beings don't have
that type of love. They don't just forgive everybody and just want them to have the best
world, the best life ever after they die. They just want them all to go the other direction.
They just want them all to go the other direction. And you know, so it's really, really important.
It's really important to understand that God's love is so much more intense than anyone can
understand.
Loving somebody who has really destroyed other people is hard for anybody to understand.
So as we go out, give people your dot coms, tell them where they can pick up the book
and give them the final pitch out to order the book wherever fine books are sold.
Okay, the book can be sold in, oh gosh, literally hundreds of different outlets.
You can order it through their website.
But the most common ones are, of course,
50% of the books in the world are sold by Amazon.
It's on Amazon and it has good reviews,
about 4.6 out of five reviews.
And you can get it on Amazon.
And the dot coms are gonna be the word that loves you,
dot com.
And that's coming out in a couple of weeks.
And then you can also go to my publisher's website.
It's called wesbopress.com and order it there.
But most likely, you could get the audiobooks coming out
next week or two, a week or two, and all
those things. Amazon is probably the most common or Barnes and Noble or some other bookstore,
they could get it for you.
Well, it's been fun to have you on the show. People search for a reason and meaning in
their life and there's all sorts of different ways people do that. And of course, it's a
testament to what you found and what you share and other people will pick up the book and
enjoy it. Thank you very much for coming to the show. We really appreciate it. Well, thanks for all the
energy that you have in bringing people to your show. And I hope that the book can face them.
When they read the book, the people that buy it will find some energy in there that's coming from
the Holy Spirit and see that they've hooked up with a good source
right there.
Well, I'm sure they'll find that in your book, Alan.
So Alan, thank you for coming on the show.
