Hi folks, this is Foss here from thechrisfossshow.com.
Hey, coming to you with another program.
This is the podcast, the Chris Foss Show podcast.
October 2nd, 2019, we're going to be talking about some of the news.
We skipped over some of the news for the Microsoft announcements.
That's going to be on another episode that you should see either before or after this
one where we talked about the Microsoft news exclusively.
So check that out if you didn't get a chance to see all the Surface announcements.
We're making this one separate so we can kind of keep that one to the side.
And we're just talking about other news that doesn't include the Microsoft Surface announcements
and product hunt coverage of what we normally do.
So let's talk about product hunt.
Today, some really interesting stuff that's out there.
The top of the charts was deep work stats. Show your boss how much time you have for real work.
This is kind of interesting. It's a first app that shows you how much time you have for
deep work and shallow work, how much time you spend in meetings, and how to compare to your
co-workers globally. This is from the website shepherd.com
and uh yeah i think it's kind of interesting uh it was the number one product of the day today
on october 2nd 2019 and uh basically it uh you know it keeps track of all this stuff you can
input your time and away you go you may want to check it out uh i think it's interesting um and that way if you're
i guess if your boss says well are you working at all you can be like hey man here's what i did
today boss leave me alone um speaking of leave me alone uh that segwayed just perfectly number two
on the charts on october 2nd was leave me alone 2.0 you can easily unsubscribe from unwanted emails using their
service and uh i guess uh let's take a look it makes it easy to unscribe from unwanted emails
and focus on privacy you can simply connect all your inboxes gbox outlook icloud fast mail aol
what people still have aol accounts yahoo and more to start unsubscribing. Tell the subscription spammers to leave you alone.
Kind of interesting.
It's a leavemealone.app if you want to check it out and everything else.
And I guess they've been doing this for about nine months.
And since then, they have scanned over 20 million emails, seen over 700,000 subscriptions, and unsubscribed 200,000 of them.
So pretty interesting.
You can support all your email boxes.
It scores your subscription.
So that's kind of interesting.
One credit, one subscribe.
Team planning and unsubscribe from CO2 emissions um this is kind of interesting
fix the climate unsubscribing i don't know man whatever you want to do that's your thing
uh i you know i'm not i'm not discounting uh you know climate control but i'm it's like what does
have to do with emails?
How much are these costing the environment?
I don't know.
Maybe they are.
Whatever they're doing, have fun with that.
So let's see.
What else stuck out with me on Product Hunt? There's a few different things that did fairly well.
This is kind of interesting.
The Workana Cloud Desktop.
I'm sorry. I read that improperly there. Evidently, I'm still learning to read. This is kind of interesting, the Workana Cloud Desktop.
I'm sorry, I read that improperly there.
Evidently, I'm still learning to read from my post-school education.
There's one way to manage your work in the cloud.
Our cloud desktop pulls all your favorite apps.
You can easily create Google Docs, Asana projects, Zoom meetings, and hundreds more right from Workana. you can go to their website at workana.com uh it's kind of interesting sort of thing i've been wondering about this this kind
of looks like a um uh let's see i'm thinking maybe like a uh what's the shift it was the
company i'm kind of thinking of right now um it looks like you can pull a lot of different things.
You've got your Google Drive.
You can organize products, documents, and apps.
I think if you're a traveler, this might be a really interesting product for you.
It looks like my Zoom meetings are here.
What else is here?
Website design, so you can kind of work through it.
It looks like some planning.
You can create everything in the cloud.
Zendesk, Microsoft Word document, new Google Calendar event, new Google Calendar doc,
lots of integration of Google.
And then some other things, Asana, Figma, Zendesk, Airtable.
Salesforce is in here as well. So there you go. Um, yeah.
And plenty of tabs. They make it, you create teams, uh, it looks like Salesforce, Amazon,
Airbnb, LinkedIn, Netflix, Lyft, uh, like them as well. So, uh, yeah, I think it's kind of
interesting. You can check it out. Uh, what else do we see on Product Hunt that really stuck out for us?
Let's see.
There's build resumes with a company called Easy Resume.
You can build beautiful resumes to land your next job.
This is kind of interesting for me.
Sleep.
That's with three E's.
Sleep well and never feel tired again.
So let's take a look at this baby.
They calculate your local sunrise time in your sleep cycles.
You go to sleep at one of the times that they suggest,
and you wake up at the sunrise refreshed, ready to take over the world.
I want to take over the world, mommy.
Shut up and go to bed, kid. Eat your pudding. Or you can't have any meat until you eat your pudding.
How can, or you can't have any pudding until you eat your meat. How can you have any meat if you
don't eat your pudding? Oh, whatever. That was a horrible, failed Pink Floyd reference. So anyway,
I guess they have some different ways to do it. So they precisely
calculate your local time and then say, go to bed, bitch, and maybe you'll feel better.
It's a company called Sleep, S-L-E-E-E-P.best. So if you're interested in that, you can check it out.
I don't know. I mean, could it hurt? It's not going to kill you. It takes about 14 minutes to fall asleep,
and the best way to wake up is to wake up with sunrise.
So the average person needs four to five sleep cycles of 1.5 hours to feel rested.
What does that mean?
I don't know.
I guess we'll, I guess whatever.
It wants to know my location.
Go to bed at, huh? This is interesting.
Is this, they got a simple website that does this. I'm surprised there's not like more to it,
but, uh, uh, don't give me any ideas. They'll figure out a way to charge us. No, that's really,
that's really, you know, kind of what everyone's doing anyway. Right? So there's that. I don't really see anything else that sticks away to that kind of sticks out at me.
So let's move on to some other freaking people when it comes to news.
Uber has launched an app called Uber Works.
It's a new app in Chicago that will match temporary workers looking for shift work with businesses looking for staffing.
I suppose that's kind of interesting.
How many apps does Uber have, for Christ's sake?
Apple has banned an app that allows people in Hong Kong
to keep track of protests and police activity,
claiming it facilitates illegal activity.
This is according to the register they're reporting it,
and they've got some stuff on it.
Google has announced action
blocks a new accessory tool that lets users create shortcuts for common multitask steps
using assistant according to tech crunch uh you can check that out as well and a really good
article that takes in this uh thing kind of uh kind of uh i guess you could call this political
it's from the New York Times.
It takes an in-depth look at how ICE under Obama and then Trump has aggressively used
big data fed by social media to clamp down on undocumented industries or immigrants.
One thing I also saw today that was kind of interesting, you can call it political, but
I don't really see it as that when comes to like tech and these applications being done, um, and how social media is used or technology is used. Uh, the, I mean, that's really
what we talk about here on the show. But so one thing I saw an article and I forget who did it.
Um, but it was an article about how the FBI is actually buying Facebook ads. What? FBI is buying Facebook ads in Washington, D.C.,
and they're trying to target Russians that are in the country.
But what they're trying to do is, my understanding of it,
is they're trying to target Russians who might be being spies in Washington,
and they're trying to flip them for double agents,
and they're running Facebook ads for that.
That's the part that I was just like what what um i don't know i just kind of like i saw that and i went i went whoa okay all right i was like why is the fbi running ads
and i'm like well maybe for recruiting
they're actually trying to recruit and flip uh i guess russian spies or future russian spies that
they can have um didn't know you could do that on facebook but i guess if russian spies and hackers
can hack us we might as well hack them back with ads or something would you like a free 10 cent
coupon come into the fbi headquarters today if you're a free 10 cent coupon? Come into the FBI headquarters today
if you're a Russian spy. You can redeem
this coupon code that we have
for a free
dual
spy agent course
or something. I don't know. Get a job with the
FBI today. Maybe I should learn
Russian. Then I can go in and be like, I'm here
to prepare to overthrow
my own country where can i
where can i uh become i don't know what i don't want that's isn't even a russian accent i don't
know chris whatever man uh google according the keyword has uh brings incognito mode to maps
so that way when you're stalking someone on maps they won't know it that's scary
um and auto delete history to youtube and adds better privacy controls to google system so um
i guess if you're watching videos of i don't know whatever you don't even watch your wife and kids
catching you watching on youtube you got one of of the wife's is like I must check your YouTube viewing thing I guess if you're a kid it might
be nice to you know you're like I don't want to see mommy daddy or watching you
know they think I'm watching Mario Kart videos or Minecraft videos and meanwhile
I'm watching big booby Judy I don't know what that means is there a big booty
Judy on big booty big booby booty booty whatever maybe she got both I don't know what that means. Is there a Big Booty Judy on Big Booty? Big Booby?
Booty, booty, whatever.
Maybe she got both.
I don't know.
For all I know, this is a channel on YouTube I just anonymously referenced.
Now everyone's going to be like, Chris watches that chick.
No, I'm just making up names.
Most likely it's something.
What else do we have on the agenda of interesting tech news?
In leaked audio, we talked about that from Mark Zuckerberg.
They're kind of, it just seems like Facebook is just under a punishing thing.
And, you know, we talked earlier about the – I'll bring this up. We talked earlier on the prior podcast about the foldable new phone announcement from Microsoft.
According to the Washington Post, this is a story written in their consumer tech review area,
the Galaxy Fold, the flip phone's a flop, but the folding trend won't stop.
So they talk about the future and where it's
going and uh evidently they don't want to buy their first folding uh smartphone so uh looks
like you got some interesting sort of comments discussions and everything else i think the
biggest question is is how long it will last uh looks like the screen on the smaller galaxies is way better than the
big screen and um uh when it comes to the quality from what i can see uh yeah you just have to get
used to a crease being able to do it but uh i don't know looks like they weren't too excited
about the product i don't know uh i like samsung I just, I'm not sure I'm sold on the foldable screen either as well.
So let me know what you think.
