Hi folks, Chris Foss here from thechrisfossshow.com.
Welcome to the podcast today.
It's Tuesday.
Holy crap-a-moly, it's, what is it, October 29th?
Tuesday.
Oh my gosh.
Anyway guys, thanks for tuning in.
We certainly appreciate you guys being here on the show.
Let's talk about tech news and what's going on in our world.
As always, be sure to watch for the next shows that we do in the segments of Product Hunt Products as well.
Up on the top of the list of different things going on, Washington Post is reporting that WhatsApp,
you know those guys, they're owned by Facebook, they are suing NSO Group.
After investigating an attack last year, they sent malware to 1,400 devices
and targeted 100-plus human rights defenders and journalists.
So this wasn't going after anybody.
This is going after human rights people and journalists trying to hack their phones.
Well, it did hack their phones.
What was interesting is it would appear as a WhatsApp call from a fellow WhatsApp user. If you answered, it would transfer malicious code to your app and
basically be able to hack your phone and do other evil stuff. So they're suing them now.
NSO group is claiming that they were not involved in the attack, but I guess WhatsApp has felt
comfortable to say there's enough different proof that they have to be able to move forward on this this is the new world
war three man uh people attacking everybody uh with cyber warfare and all that good stuff be
careful what you open be careful careful what links you click make sure you have two-factor
identification pick good passwords um you know keep your backup codes in several different stored safe encrypted places
and just be careful
that's the main thing to do
and teach your friends around you to be careful as well
let's go the next up
it's from the streamable
Sony
we talked about this a day or two ago
where Sony had been shopping for buyers to buy PlayStation View
it's live TV
subscription service on January 30th. It's announced. It's actually going to shut down,
which I'm very happy for. I have my PS4 pro and I'm very disappointed. Uh, and have been for years
now that I can't use any other streaming services on the PS4 because they basically say, oh, you know, we don't want
the competition, which is just awful.
I mean, you can get Netflix and Hulu and a few things, but you can't get like the real
competitors that deliver like cable style news, well, you know what I mean, all the channels, basically,
you can definitely get Netflix and Hulu, but I'm really happy for this, because now finally,
maybe all the different services I've used, like YouTube Live, there's a few other services that
I've used in the past that I really like, and I have been able to use the apps on the PlayStation,
which is just ignorant. I hate it.
So anyway, that'll be good.
They're going to shut down on January 30th.
I won't miss them.
I tried them, I think, for a month or so and went, no, this isn't worth it.
And too much of a pain in the butt.
I like if Xbox opens up to apps a lot and they've lost some of my business to Xbox.
Because Xbox is more of
a home entertainment center they've got to start waking up you can't just be a gaming center you
got to be everything man so wake up smell the roses this is kind of funny we've been talking
about this for a while and of course facebook this week has been even under more uh hits that
it's been taking to its reputation and people evaluation of it where Mark Zuckerberg went out and said that they're not going to really back up fake news sources like Breitbart on it.
So he talked about several of these different things, and it just caused even more of a furor.
And this is kind of funny, kind of a kick out of this. The, uh, CNN, it reports an activist registers as a candidate in California is 2022 gubernatorial election.
Uh, and he's doing it for one sole purpose, not to win the election. false Facebook ads to challenge just for the point of challenging Mark Zuckerberg's
controversial thing about how they're not going to fact check politicians post and they can lie
their ass off if they want. You know, it's really crazy. You don't, what you don't realize is that
if you try and run ads and pull stunts and do bogus stuff with a normal ad account on Facebook, you can get banned. You can get your
ad account banned. So you may want to, um, you know, it's kind of BS that they're just like,
yeah, politicians get a pass. Yeah, it really is. I mean, we, we really are in a fight in this life
for the truth. Let's put it that way. I think we can all agree on the same thing the fight for the truth reality and and
trust of the american public is of utmost importance than ever before and so it's really
important we take and try and find that center again if we can or get close to it if we can
mac rumors according that apple released the mac os catalina 10.15.1 update with a new emoji,
Siri privacy settings, and support for AirPods Pro,
and more HomeKit devices.
So there you go.
Yeah, go Apple.
Whatever, man.
If you love Apple, there you go.
You're going to love that news.
Vox is reporting HBO Max to launch in May.
It's going to cost $ a month it's the same
as the existing hbo at&t plans to offer bundle free subscriptions for some of the customers of
its services uh it's going to be basically warner media's new streaming service it'll feature all
the hbs shows the game of thrones new programming i guess this is the same as google now or google or not not google now uh hbo now
uh which i've had before for 15 a month the the only problem is is i don't get the live stuff
on hbo i get like like post-recorded shows i'm a big fan of the bill maher series and and i can't
watch it live i have to wait for it which i hate till like the next day or something uh up on Mashable
Xiaomi's first high-end watch looks like a lot like the Apple watch with a button and twisting
control knob on the right side uh they've got a 9505th event that's shaping up to be a pretty
big one and they've got an upcoming 108 megapixel phone and a few other different things they're
going to be taking and doing so that should be pretty interesting you can check that out on november 5th as i omis i believe i'm
pronouncing that correctly uber refuses to provide la with real-time location data on its scooters
sues the city requests restraining order in case la decides to suspend uber's license definitely
this is a big fight that's coming down reported by cnet
um so there's that uber's it's just kind of interesting how they just keep on trucking
will these companies ever make a profit i don't know do you know you probably don't either i'm
not sure they know so there's that venture beat is reporting that samsung says smart things
has over 45 million active users
and works with more than 5,000 devices.
It announces its new developer and partner programs.
That would be great, too.
I've been then impressed, but I have some older units of SmartThings
and have to use some of the older apps.
But I don't know.
I guess we'll see how it goes.
9 to 5 Mac.
Apple has released Watch OS 6.1 with support for AirPods Pro
and Watch Series 1 and Series 2,
which were excluded from the initial release of Watch OS 6.
So if you're an Apple Watch lover, there you go.
You can enjoy that fun.
So what else do we have?
Game Industry Biz is reporting that EA Partners with Valve is bringing its EA Access subscription to Steam next spring
and launch games on Steam starting with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.
I'm all for this.
I'm really happy with what Steam's been doing lately and what they're up to.
Bungie recently moved Destiny 2, which is a huge game, away from Activision and put it on Steam.
And I think it's doing much better on Steam. Steam just has a better base of a wider range of players
and a huge loyal customer base.
I think it's been much better for Destiny to do that and very smart.
And I've been enjoying playing with a lot of the Steam players.
I play almost exclusively on PC these days.
So there's that.
What else do we have?
According to TechCrunch, Amazon makes grocery delivery free. Did you say free, Chris? see these days so there's that um what else do we have according to tech crunch amazon makes
grocery delivery free did you say free chris free i said free he said free uh in 2000 about 2000
u.s cities for all prime members by removing the 14.99 per month Amazon Fresh fee. What? Amazon is taking on the world of groceries
and specifically grocery delivery, and they're basically making it free. Wow. If you're a Prime
member, of course, keep that in mind. So I'm going to go download the Amazon Fresh app right now.
Yeah, man. Dude, they take away the cost on that thing?
You got me.
Sounds like they're going to make the same play that they made on Prime,
which basically was taking a loss leader with basically Prime.
You know what I'm talking about the mail service lose the money on the cost of mail to mail stuff so people order for Amazon it
worked from there it looks like what that's what they're doing here as well
also from Amazon according the verge Amazon echo buds they have reviewed it
and they claim it's got excellent sound quality, comfortable fit, and good Bose noise reduction,
but no wireless charging point and outdated micro USB charging point.
Ouch.
Wow.
Okay, that's got to hurt.
So there you freaking go.
So those are some of the news that stuck out to me today
and everything that goes into it.
Be sure to check out our next segment for what we're doing on product hunt and some
of the different things that stuck out there.
Thanks for tuning in.
We'll see you next time.
