Hems.com is a one-stop shop for hair loss, skin care, sexual wellness for men. Yo L. Romero. The church of what's happening now, it's Monday morning, the 12th or the 13th. It really doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:03:16 I'm very excited to announce this, the guest. We've been talking about it. for a while. My main man, Mr. Yo-O Romero, number one contender in the world, fighting for the championship, June 8th and motherfucking Chicago to Windy City.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Thank you for coming to the show. Roshabobino, show me, mano. Thank you. Thank you so much. It's my pleasure. Thank you, Athaglia. Lee, how you doing, brother?

Starting point is 00:03:50 I'm a fan. So what I wanted to do was leave it to the professionals tomorrow. What I want to do with Yo-L is to ask him. You know, when you look at Yo-L, go into the ring, you see this superhuman dark-skinned kid that you're scared of. But this is not what this is about. Tonight, we're going to get to know who the hell Yo-O. Romero is. Who's your ging at Yo-O-Romero?
Starting point is 00:04:15 Ging et-Mahompa. What a-Mu-Vare. He is A person that He was And he In a barrow
Starting point is 00:04:27 In a barrow Mewid In the city of Pinaird Called River Everybody He knows As a ranch
Starting point is 00:04:35 So it's There, natural From there And I Crived Like all Cubano
Starting point is 00:04:39 He's He He's He's By the Hubeer Housous He Wold,
Starting point is 00:04:45 Pellota He was raised like any other cubby he's saying that he was raised you know poor no shoes playing in the fucking dirt you know it's um the humble you know the humble life like a every every every every kid in cuba the same for the every kid's kid in cuba you know i had no different for the kid in cuba i and the and i always um like a the i stay all my life in in my city you know um i stay with my people, you know. And the shoes, I run, I play baseball, no shoes.
Starting point is 00:05:23 I play the ball, you know, with my friend in Cuba. It's very humble, you know. No, no, no problem for the color, for the people. It's black, the people white. Everybody is the same, you know. Everybody take the same water. Everybody drink the same water when they play baseball. You know, that's this amazing time.
Starting point is 00:05:48 That's what the people need. The people need, the people, the, for this time, the people need it. Remember the time. This time is the most important. No, no problem. No, no, no, no matter what the people is, so you have more, more money about him, etc. No, that's not important.
Starting point is 00:06:10 The most important is the relationship, you know, everybody together, everybody, playing the same play and the same emotion, the same time. This is amazing time. How many brothers do you have? I have three sisters and four brothers. And your father did what in Cuba?
Starting point is 00:06:30 Yeah, my father's staying in Cuba. No, what does he do? Can look at him in Cuba? Oh, my father is boxing. Boxing? Yeah, amateur boxing. Yeah, he's the number three in Cuba and the national team.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Your father? Yeah, yeah. Now, but what did he do for a living now? What did he do for a living now? Boxing. Boxing. Boxing. My papa was Jose, was a host. He was in the national team, the Cuban Olympic center, you know.
Starting point is 00:06:57 So he went to the Olympics too? No, no, he no, he no go to the Olympics. He's the number three in Cuba. Okay. The number three. In that time, there was a magnificent voice in aure. It's a magnificent boxing. Everybody knows the guy is the number one.
Starting point is 00:07:15 is the best in this division. Jose Gome, Jose Gome is an amazing guy. He's the number one, and the number two is a Benado Coma champion in the world, too. And the number three is my father, you know. But it's, maybe if these, if these two of those men, my father would say,
Starting point is 00:07:37 the number one, but he had two leones in front of him. So there were two lines in front of him. How old were you when you first boxed? What was saying you? You know, all the time I want to make the boxing by my father no one. My father said, no, no, boxing is a very hot spoil. I don't want to you follow my... Footsteps.
Starting point is 00:08:04 You know, my step. See, my way, you know, I don't want you. You follow my way. You can do another spoil. And now one coach for wrestling, seen me and say, you have a talent for wrestling, you know. But I try on the baseball too,
Starting point is 00:08:24 I'm trying in many sport. But finally I make a wrestling, you know. This coach, you say, no, no, no, come. You family making boxing and wrestling. You have a talent for wrestling too. And that's what I make in wrestling, you know. So you started wrestling in Cuba now, In Cuba, is there a high school?
Starting point is 00:08:45 Like there, a high school? Yes, in Cuba, in Cuba, have the system. The name for this system is the pyramid system. You know, it's a pyramid. Pyramid system, you know. It's a system that's a pyramid. And then, it's a very good system. where the kids make it
Starting point is 00:09:12 very when the kids are more right they get you when you're young yeah when the kid is very young like when I in the beginning I have eight years or you know you started when you were eight
Starting point is 00:09:26 when I was when I was eight years so when I began to let me and then let me get older pin that de Rio goes up and can come away like that's what what happens you're going
Starting point is 00:09:37 contra Kamaway Yeah it's a it's a system first where it's
Starting point is 00:09:43 through a through a house and so if you are going going you're
Starting point is 00:09:51 going you're getting you can compete international international you know
Starting point is 00:09:57 like this and how did you get when you were 18 what was your
Starting point is 00:10:03 life like when you had 18, how in your You know, when I have 18 years, I stay in the union national team. I stay in the national team.
Starting point is 00:10:15 My life is different when I have eight, you know. But no, no, no, my life changed little by little, you know. Now, pass on much hunger in Cuba. You know, so it was a lot of trouble in Cuba. of people starving in Cuba, they give you a certain amount of eggs every month and a certain amount of milk. Because you were a wrestler, did you get more food? They don't know more food. Yeah, yeah, when you're in a selection national, you come very well, you. So they treat you a little better. They give you a little better food. Because like my uncle, I'm sorry,
Starting point is 00:11:02 my uncle told me one time, if Thio Miel told me that, my cousins, Eki, and whatever, he goes, they live like kings in Cuba. That they don't live like everybody else. They're even better than the people in Cuba. Yeah. Yeah, they starve.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Yes, you know, the athlete has priority in the world so the athlete has priority in Cuba. They give you milk, they'll give you eggs. Yeah. They're way or they give you eggs. That's all.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Can you explain why? Like, why in Cuba, in these small countries, is it so important? Like, why do they place such a huge importance on, on, and getting the best and, and, like,
Starting point is 00:11:43 giving them special treatment? Like, it, like, what, like, what is it about Q, like,
Starting point is 00:11:49 why in Cuba, like, the, it seems like there's something about, like, it's, it's a, it's a,
Starting point is 00:11:54 tough country to live in. It, like, a lot of people have certain feelings about that country. Like, why, why do they take such a big importance on baseball's huge, right?
Starting point is 00:12:04 Like, why is that, such a huge thing there. And look at the, he wants to ask you, why is it so important in Cuba? Because the depotes are so important in Cuba? Or because the deportees are so good in Cuba? Two questions.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Okay. Okay. I think the talent God gives the talent the people. And Cuba now, now you can go Cuba. you can see many talent because I think that's what I think I think God gives their talent
Starting point is 00:12:46 for the sport and keeper for the people you know right now the last time when I say in QI see many people with much talent for to do for any type of deporting
Starting point is 00:13:01 you know The other is the system The another point is the system where the Cuba has it for the sport You know It's magnificent
Starting point is 00:13:15 Manifico System That is the very true They have it down to a sign Yes, she, she, she In Cuba, there's a magnificent System of a sport Now, when I was a kid
Starting point is 00:13:27 I was growing up And I met these guys When I was Calatero I was karate of the youngsitoca Karatea I'm gonna I'm gonna
Starting point is 00:13:36 I'm gonna and I'm that in Cuba the judo was the Judo was the Pinga but they
Starting point is 00:13:43 mandah to Japan or something they would send you the train at these places That is true
Starting point is 00:13:50 you know but that's the normal in the sport in the sport in the world you know
Starting point is 00:13:57 because the United States take the for example take the wrestling team take the people and
Starting point is 00:14:10 send the team for the Russia for the two or three more every country do it is you know every country do this because I wanted more experience I want to more like
Starting point is 00:14:25 to go up against different people yeah yeah there's a lot of the world by a little kind of a different look yeah but I think that the essence
Starting point is 00:14:37 of that the sports is good I think it's because God gave the God knows it.
Starting point is 00:14:43 It's like that the Cuban is a person a person is a person
Starting point is 00:14:47 that's that you take for example you take a three or four five
Starting point is 00:14:53 people in Brazil is the four or five people for you take it three three
Starting point is 00:15:00 three play very good football soccer that's a head talent God gives the talent for the soccer you know so you take it three people five people 10 people for Jamaica for the for the
Starting point is 00:15:17 for the track believe me maybe five or six make it good very good athlete that says the God gives the talent you know I mean, look at what the baseball, you know, look at what the Cubans have done.
Starting point is 00:15:35 I mean, even before Castro, they would go down there for spring training. Did you know that? The players would go to Cuba to play against Cuban players to get good in the summer. Los Al-Varano, Ante, the U.S. in the off-season, the Belota, say on Pau, to train. No. Because they wanted, you know, metal. sharpens metal, bro. So
Starting point is 00:16:02 they will go down there to train. Now, there's another side to this coin, Joel, that a lot of people don't understand. In Cuba and these countries, we don't have as many distractions. Oh, you luchab, you're doing to do you. No, no, no, no, no. No, no.
Starting point is 00:16:20 No, no. Totally. No, no. It's totally training. Training. Totally training. So if I took you... Training, a student, you go to the... school, return for the house, or return for the,
Starting point is 00:16:35 for the, for the room, and you take the foot, and later you're training again. I get two, two times you're training in the day. What, it's the pain,
Starting point is 00:16:47 the, the, the, for the, for the, for the June, you know? It's depending on the age. The age. The age.
Starting point is 00:16:56 You know, it's dependent for the age. Now, did you live at the pyramid? Do you know me in a pyramid? you wouldn't only be at your house no more no you go to the house only Saturday two days Saturday and Sunday and you go back for the
Starting point is 00:17:09 school you know you know you'd never as a school you know and then you train about classes you'd get on the food all it's internado
Starting point is 00:17:23 you're right it's internal right there and then because you were a wrestler no service not you know to go to the the
Starting point is 00:17:32 government because it was a wrestler yeah I'm yeah I'm
Starting point is 00:17:37 never never never how old you when you when you said
Starting point is 00:17:42 that said no more Cuba at the age of the 30 when I
Starting point is 00:17:46 have 30 23 years why because I know
Starting point is 00:17:54 more more another possibility more more best life
Starting point is 00:18:00 for my family, you know. I want to make it the MMA. I have a dreams, you know. I have a dream for my, for my, for my, for my, for my, for my, for my, I, I, I want to the, do not, do you know, do you know, do you know, you can make it the, uh, the, uh, you, you know can make a UFC, uh, make it the UFC in Cuba. So you wanted the, say, so you wanted, say, you want to, say, so you want it, stay in good level in the war and when you want to do something, you need go. You know, you don't need
Starting point is 00:18:40 stay in this play because this place is the same, is the same, it's in the same, you need to partier. To need to partier, the best option. The best option for you, right. The best option is out the Cuba, you know, in Cuba, no, make a, you have
Starting point is 00:19:00 not make it M.M.A. You know, you have to go to go to that your dream. You have to go to get to that's a way, of what you will give that possibility to that so when you were in Cuba, when did you see M.M.A. How did you see M.M.A. the first time?
Starting point is 00:19:15 Well, in Cuba, you know, in Cuba, the people saw that they steal the signal. I saw the old school for MMA, you know, in the... It's a baditude. Validtto
Starting point is 00:19:30 Also, also. Also, also, also when when that was when the time of the time
Starting point is 00:19:37 of, tank Abbott. You were watching all that. Yes, how were you watching it? I was,
Starting point is 00:19:44 what were you watching it? No, no, don't know. How? How? How? All that all of
Starting point is 00:19:49 always, you know, it's fiftra for, as it's called in Cuba, Cajita, CD,
Starting point is 00:19:55 you know, people that lived, people that were of Cuba, of the exterior and they'd
Starting point is 00:20:00 go to the Cuba would bring the tapes back to Cuba. So, so the people would go, the people were going to
Starting point is 00:20:08 and even to get to the possibility of one. And when I saw this, I said, wow.
Starting point is 00:20:12 When you saw M.A. You said, I can do this. I can do this. Not only I can do this. Really?
Starting point is 00:20:20 You thought that way even then. Yeah. So you're 32 years old. What do you do? What do you do? A day.
Starting point is 00:20:27 The day that you What did you do when you did you do when you went to the morning? Yeah, I said, well, yeah, this is my, my
Starting point is 00:20:34 time in Cuba ended, I need to do my life out of Cuba, took that decision. So once you made the decision, you told your wife, you couldn't say nothing.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Yes, I, he communicated to various people. The people very, very special, that I knew that I saw that you could
Starting point is 00:21:00 that's what I said, I told to somebody, you know, special people, whether I have a confidence in people. Confidence. Confidence. Confident people, you know. I said, that's what I need to do for my life, for your life,
Starting point is 00:21:14 for the life of my people, for my family. Maybe, I maybe, I maybe, how did he say, triumphal? You may triumphant?
Starting point is 00:21:26 Maybe you would have triumphed? Maybe I try, I try, a triumph? Maybe do it, maybe no, but but, but I'll have to a life in the intent on this. That's my thinking. No matter what I do,
Starting point is 00:21:44 if I'm training like crazy I'm going to do, I'll do everything to do for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, you were going to do whatever it took
Starting point is 00:21:56 to achieve your dreams. You were going to do what you to do what you were to, by, by, to champion. Yes, entraned like a loco.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Yes. And don't say you went to Germany to wrestle and you stayed. I came with the
Starting point is 00:22:09 team national I go with the national team from Cuba for the Grand Prix
Starting point is 00:22:15 in Germany in Leipsee in the city for Lice in Germany and when I
Starting point is 00:22:22 finished the tournament I win the tournament the Grand Prince I win and I say
Starting point is 00:22:26 okay I call my brother my my little brother stay in Germany,
Starting point is 00:22:33 live in Germany, he's boxing. I call him and say, hey, that's at the time. I know we want to go back for Cuba. He said, for sure.
Starting point is 00:22:41 She said, I for sure. It's okay. I go with my brother. I know I go back from Cuba. And I make it the,
Starting point is 00:22:52 in Germany have a wrestling competition for the Bundesliga as Germany Bundesliga. I make a I continue wrestling, you know.
Starting point is 00:23:02 And one day I see competition for every man and say, when I go. I go, I know, no, no, no, no, no training. Never in my life I train it, but I fight. I fight, I win.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Yeah, and continue. That's it. And from Germany, how long did you stay in Germany? For six years. Six years. Yeah. You get the input by your and out there
Starting point is 00:23:23 to reunite with your family. How long did it take? In Cuba, 11 years. 11 years without your wife and your children. No, no, no, no, no, no. The mom of my son, I have three kids, but my son
Starting point is 00:23:38 is staying in Cuba, this is different in mom. Right. You know? No, never will I regrece with her. Right. Now, how long did it take your your, your seora already to come over?
Starting point is 00:23:48 Yeah, no, that's, that's the mom of my sister is the that I know you know. Oh, okay. You met her in Germany. Yes, so she's German? Yes. It's Cuban-Alemian. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Yeah. She's German-Cuban-Lie. So can you guys talk about, like, do you feel trapped in Cuba? Because, like, you hear these stories about people leaving Cuba. And it doesn't, to me, it doesn't seem like you don't like Cuba. It seems like you have a lot of love for Cuba. But what the emotion is to, like, to want to leave. You have so much love for it, but you have to get out.
Starting point is 00:24:28 I love Cuba. Yeah. I have a passion. I have a love, they really love for my country. But, you know, see, you ask the people, when the people go for the, for the, for the exodus, for many exodus in the war, when the people go out for the country,
Starting point is 00:24:51 you ask for the people, you love your country? Everybody say, I love my country, you know. I never hear nobody say I not love my country. This is different. I love my people. I love my country. I love the people when they play with me when they are in kids. You know, I love.
Starting point is 00:25:13 I continue. When I go Cuba right now, when I now I go about Cuba, I cry. I cry because I have, you know what I am? It's, come on, man. It's part of you. You know, many history, many history, you know, you never forget this because it's your sense. See you say the people, not you, see somebody say, I don't love my country, you're an unbri-vacil.
Starting point is 00:25:49 You know, you, you know nothing, you know, you're not, you know, you, you know, come to say that is, you know. You're nothing. You're an empty man if you don't love your country. You don't love your country. of your country, you know, you, you, you, you know, you, you know, you, you know, you, you, you know, but I think it's, I don't know, at least for me, I think it's different. I love America, but whenever I hear stories about people, maybe it's not Cuba, maybe it's other countries, I can't, like, you must be really torn. Like, as a kid, did you think you were going to leave Cuba or did, were you like, I'm all never leave Cuba?
Starting point is 00:26:18 A man, never, never. You never, you never, to know, when you know, you say, I'm going to be, you, you born, you think like this. I born here. I'm dead here. And house. In the same house. Because you burn and you see left and you see right. You see your mom and you see your dad. You see your sister. You see your brother. You see your family. And you say, this is my kingdom. that is only what I need in your life and you mind only you're thinking
Starting point is 00:27:05 I born here I did here with my people you don't think that you want to go out another house you think of this later in years but not the same time that's it the same
Starting point is 00:27:20 what happened in the life of the people when you how when you grow? When you grow and now you see the life the life push you life and now you need
Starting point is 00:27:36 push you need a push your life. If life push you you need a push your life for better, you know? better and better because that's the way you know So,
Starting point is 00:27:54 then needs to move after the house for the house that your family, your mom and your dad because now
Starting point is 00:28:03 you have a woman and now you have a daughter you have a kid you need a you need a move but you need
Starting point is 00:28:16 move because you wanted more better for your kids not for you for your kids, for your family, you know what I'm saying? And so, then you, then, so you have to move, when you come out of the house of your family, the, that your mom and your daddy,
Starting point is 00:28:36 you don't think about another house, you go out, maybe another country, another city, another language, another cultured, but you need to go. No matter what, but you need to go. You know what? You were stuck in Cuba, bro. Tutata-a-Arang-Kua.
Starting point is 00:28:56 You had nowhere to go. Even though you were loved, you have your family there. Yeah. You want more. You want fucking more. That's what I'm talking. That's what I say.
Starting point is 00:29:07 When the life push you, you need to push you the life. If the life you put your, you empooha, you empooha, if the life not
Starting point is 00:29:17 you're doing, what you think that you deserve, or what you need to do to help you to your family for that's
Starting point is 00:29:24 me more you have to you have to you have to get to you're going to you got to fucking
Starting point is 00:29:30 push back you know we get stuck in our own fucking mud and sorrow and you have to go
Starting point is 00:29:37 to where you could grow you know and we've all been through this is a situation it's called
Starting point is 00:29:44 sacrifice we've spoken about this show a thousand times you know I have a 27
Starting point is 00:29:50 year old daughter have no conversation with It haunts me every fucking day But guess what? I was going nowhere in Boulder
Starting point is 00:29:57 I wanted to be a fucking camera You're your is what I'm gonna do In just a different matter My mom did what you did You know? My mom tainkua I was born She took me back My sister was still in school
Starting point is 00:30:10 He said, She said to stay with a grandmother And that summer Castro said no See yes This that And next thing you know My sister grew up
Starting point is 00:30:22 in Cuba she didn't have the same opportunities I had do I live with that fucking guilt every fucking day you know what I said when I saw you fight you pen so when I saw when I watch you fucking fight because it's like I know where you're coming from you're selling you don't know you're tally in you say sufreement to you or sin connozette you're suffering that you didn't know history because all the world Lothian, Lothanian. You know, how many Cubans left their fucking loved ones behind?
Starting point is 00:30:56 Yeah. But they didn't leave them behind, like, I'm leaving you behind. I left you behind because I want to do something better with my life. That's what you wanted to do, something better with your life. So, are in Germany? Temetitignti at first M.M.A fight, got out? The first one. Knockout or?
Starting point is 00:31:14 Knockout. Okay. Knockout. So how many amateur fights did you have? No, no amateur. No amateurs. No, no. No.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Went right into fucking MMA. You needed money. No time to fuck around. No, the problem is that when I go, they say, you know can't do amateur because you have an Olympic World Championship background. You know can do amateur. Say, what?
Starting point is 00:31:40 Yeah, you need to go to a professional fighter. You say, oh my God. I say, okay, I go. That's it. I never do an amateur. I never. is that I never trained. I go to fight.
Starting point is 00:31:55 So you took the couple tools you had from the house. I'm still learning. That's what I say to people. I'm a pioneer in this. I'm trying. I'm learning and I've learned that's always good that's always good to learn something every fucking day. I feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:32:18 You're going to learn the last day you stop learning is the day you fucking die. And you have to have the mind as the great architector. You have to have a mind like a child in many ways, like a sponge. You know, Lee's
Starting point is 00:32:37 getting into comedy right now. And I called him last night and this morning to explain to him that he's living this life now. He's never done before he's doing stand-up comedy you know and I told him no matter where this goes no matter where this takes you this is this journey that you're doing it's going to open up your eyes even if you don't stay a comic you're still going to do something you know and that's what I talk about on this
Starting point is 00:33:03 podcast every day that sometimes you want your life to change but you don't know how to fucking change it you got to make a move you got to make a move and that's why I got the utmost respect for these guys I had an opportunity that I could have been him. I could have been his fucking neighbor. You could have been besie to, you know, you know. You, when my mother died, I fucking threw my life away. But, bentehe an year.
Starting point is 00:33:32 But I got back in there. And it was my Cuban upbringing. It was what I learned from a Cuban house. We were watching videos before this. We were getting fired up. And we were watching Wawanko videos. This lady came on. and he was calling her a G
Starting point is 00:33:49 that she's the type of woman that if she has a beef, she sends the son to go down there and kill the fucking dude. That was the mentality in Cuba. La mentaella of it, we play for keeps. When I go to get a hua,
Starting point is 00:34:04 when I go to get a... I don't go there to fuck around, to the giggle. No, no, no. That was what was given to me from the Cuban side. That was... You know, I always
Starting point is 00:34:17 know the mentality of the type that came to other country, our mentality is a little different. We play harder. You know what I'm saying? We ain't got time to be on the fucking phone and playing. No, no, no. I have to always be
Starting point is 00:34:31 doing something, and all those years that I was jolid, and doing drugs, and all that, I was, me, be comical, I became a comic. With all those, I was With all that madness or going to jail and all that, I still became a fucking comic. And it
Starting point is 00:34:49 wasn't because I was better than anybody. I don't know what I'm learned as a young man, as a Cuban. The things, the lessons my mother instilled in me. You know, before the show, we were talking about knowing about that that means don't come to this house hit. Yeah. Like if you throw two punches and the kid to those three punches, you came home hit.
Starting point is 00:35:12 in a Cuban house that's not allowed that's not even fucking comprehended even if you have to go back and hit him with a fucking chair at least you didn't stay hit that mentality is a fucking crazy mentality but it works for me
Starting point is 00:35:28 you know we were listening to music and he said to me that I was old school he goes Joey's old school and he was breaking my heart saying that this doesn't even exist in Cuba no more than that now it's regga tone and rap music yeah yeah I see my car.
Starting point is 00:35:42 After I here I've fun, so I see him playing heavy metal guitar and the whole fucking deal. I'm like, what the fuck happened? So it's, it's, so six amateur fights.
Starting point is 00:35:54 What, what did you go first? Strike force or the U.S. Strike force? Strike force. Straight from Germany? You went to strike force? Straight from Germany?
Starting point is 00:36:03 You went to strike force? Yes. Right? I'm, I'm, I'm, a play very difficult. a champion that
Starting point is 00:36:13 had been to play a he had had been the title Rafael Fayao Rafael Fayao yes
Starting point is 00:36:18 No, let me tell you something I said let's say what I say everything in your life you need to see positive
Starting point is 00:36:27 not negative I lose but I see everything positive you know what because I
Starting point is 00:36:36 win this fight the next you know who it is the next the next fight Sanderson Sanderson is the champion the striped for us
Starting point is 00:36:47 Right right right You know what I happen And I fight with this guy I know That's it I know I don't have a spirit
Starting point is 00:36:55 For this fight I say thank God I lose this fight Because I win I got the fight He made me He made me Destroyed me
Starting point is 00:37:06 I'm going to throw it Sandison me I'm because it's, until now,
Starting point is 00:37:12 has to have a embole-dora had a more more young and I was no experience
Starting point is 00:37:21 and you had no I was gonna kill you yeah and me to, like we
Starting point is 00:37:27 would have to get a yeah, a fucked up you yeah a handigua
Starting point is 00:37:32 and then my mandigua not would be to my mandibal you had I said I'd
Starting point is 00:37:37 thank God because you beat Rafael Fajah Fajah, you would have had a fight with
Starting point is 00:37:42 no experience. Who did you fight after Raphael Fajah? No, yeah after
Starting point is 00:37:49 after U.S. I was two years in a play because I had a surgery in the cueyo
Starting point is 00:37:53 and God was good, God was good, God, God, as God,
Starting point is 00:37:58 as always, God did that UFC viera in me and because it
Starting point is 00:38:08 was my first play and a one of a one of a
Starting point is 00:38:12 after after after disappeared and you know he said he took
Starting point is 00:38:18 a and I went to USC with the with the next surgery he was
Starting point is 00:38:26 to have the operation you were about to get the surgery before you
Starting point is 00:38:29 went to the UFC he was he was he he was he came to
Starting point is 00:38:34 get a a play lucre he came to get
Starting point is 00:38:36 a battle for a cow and now you're going to have to
Starting point is 00:38:41 you can't be able to and you say he's he said okay I'm I'm
Starting point is 00:38:46 the I'm I'm going to so you got knocked out you have neck surgery
Starting point is 00:38:53 and the UFC still signed you and they paid for the surgery yes and you said
Starting point is 00:38:58 he said I go so I'm so I took so I'm I'm after I
Starting point is 00:39:03 after the surgery so was a process it was a process but after I was the
Starting point is 00:39:09 I only I only did operated and my recuperation four months after the operation it was four months
Starting point is 00:39:15 after the four months I'm going to normally we're a year to start to start to start
Starting point is 00:39:23 to start after four months and I was you at the four months I was there were hitting pads and
Starting point is 00:39:32 that I remember that the cooer that was that it was that was very very,
Starting point is 00:39:36 all, so I put in too, I'm doing because I'm doing this, and I'm
Starting point is 00:39:41 the same my family. I said, I'm operated for this, to be the operation.
Starting point is 00:39:50 After the I was, I was to train at the four months, and then after the
Starting point is 00:39:53 four months, to the seven months, was the United for the first
Starting point is 00:39:58 time. So after seven months from your surgery, the UFC called you for your
Starting point is 00:40:04 first fight. And who was it against? And the play for a star. Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:09 I was the first play of the night. The preliminary card. Yes, I was the fucking undercard on like FX fucking three. I was the first play that night
Starting point is 00:40:21 and thanks to God that I gave the knockout of the night. So you got the knock out of the night? Yeah. Yeah. And then it all fucking started after that.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Yeah. And we're still thinking to Cuba. You would love to go back to Cuba someday. I'm Cuba. I'm going to Cuba until the day that I'm going to. Because I'm Cuban. And who's left in Cuba? Your father?
Starting point is 00:40:54 My son. My son. My son, my father, my mom, sister and brothers, friends. And they're all there. And my history. Your history. Yeah, my history. because
Starting point is 00:41:08 although I stay out of Cuba I still being Cuban and I'm doing history for Cuba so even though
Starting point is 00:41:15 that you're out of Cuba you're still making history for Cuba and Cuba still in your heart and whatnot you're a bad
Starting point is 00:41:22 motherfucker sir thank you so much a soldier of God and stuff see you some boy
Starting point is 00:41:27 now let me ask you a question here because I wanted to ask you more questions about Cuba and stuff like that did you ever
Starting point is 00:41:36 met Fidel did you ever You know, Fidel? Yes, I knew the hand and I did the man, and I was
Starting point is 00:41:42 a kid. Yeah, I was a little in Cuba. How old were you? I had 20, 22 years.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Had you, were you already like a big-time wrestler in in Cuba at 22? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You had already been to the Olympics
Starting point is 00:41:58 at 22? Yeah. No shit? Yeah. At 22, you were already Yeah, so you were
Starting point is 00:42:05 already like fucking living good in the year. I had champion in the world in 20 years. 21 years old.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Olympic fucking chant. 20 years old. Jesus Christ. I remember when I win the World Championship in Ankara, I have a 21 years old. It's in 190.
Starting point is 00:42:25 In 1999, it was when I won the championship in Ankara. But I had had had had other medals at that point. You got out of the world medals at that point.
Starting point is 00:42:34 Yeah, in the 97, I cogipata. In the 99. In the 18th, in Tehran, I got bronze, and in the World Olympics of the Sydney, 2000, Siebel. And then,
Starting point is 00:42:48 socessively, until 2007. That's a fucking amazing. What did they say to you? I don't know. What did he say to you when he met you? Congratulations. Oh, yeah, yeah, I say, congratulations, you're...
Starting point is 00:43:03 I am... Everybody knows. The people who know me, he knows, He know what I say is the truth. I am for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for the, for all sports in Cuba. For, for, for, for all the athletes in Cuba, for many years, I am staying every time the most best, 10 sport for all athletes in Cuba. You're the top 10 athletes in Cuba, yeah, along with the boxers and baseball. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:39 What else is big in Cuba? Baseball, boxing. The most important is the national sport in Cuba is baseball. Baseball. Baseball. Yeah. And nobody in your family played baseball? No.
Starting point is 00:43:52 No, yeah, yeah. One prima. A prima. A prima. A prima. A friend was a polo da, but in Cuba, there's a lot of fucking talent. To be a baseball,
Starting point is 00:44:02 plays a lot of fucking talent. Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. It's the fucking home ground. That's where God makes them. He makes a lot of them. What does I say to you, Joel, when you were growing up, because you said to me that Cuba has changed a lot,
Starting point is 00:44:18 when did it start changing in your eyes? You know, when I met my cousins, it was maybe eight years ago. And a song remains the Led Zeppelin came on on the fucking, we were in Cantors. That song, The Aungoamericana, came on. And they were singing it in Spanish. Yeah. and me
Starting point is 00:44:38 they asked, how did you get that? How did you hear this? And me they said a guy in the neighbor had a cassette
Starting point is 00:44:46 and led Zeppelin and that had a caspar and that down to the house. It's not like that no more.
Starting point is 00:44:51 No, no, no. Is that what it used to be? Do you remember it like that? Yeah, you know,
Starting point is 00:44:57 I've heard stories of that. No, I've lived as I've been 40, I don't know I've lived
Starting point is 00:45:04 like, but I see of those things. But, So in Cuba, in Cuba, I see all the type of music. So, I hear music of rap,
Starting point is 00:45:11 the J-Z, the, of the... So if I'm driving down the street and cube, I can listen to the fucking rap music. Yeah, it's no matter. The government don't say nothing, no, no, no, no, nothing. No internet still, though.
Starting point is 00:45:25 How? No, there is internet. Oh, there is internet. Yes, in some of the internet. Yeah, in some of the internet. If I have internet, in Cuba, see, yeah. There's there.
Starting point is 00:45:35 The kids. Yes. It's, it's, it's, for, but, yes, there's there's internet. The people
Starting point is 00:45:43 are sitting in a, a cafe. A cafe, yeah, there's internet. Your family have a computer? Yes,
Starting point is 00:45:51 my family has computer. So your family's doing good, no problems. Everybody's helping. I thank God. I thank God. God,
Starting point is 00:45:57 God gave me the opportunity for the, for the help my family. My family stay good. I say,
Starting point is 00:46:05 thank God. You know, Joel, like I told you when I met you earlier, that whenever, like, I had to really get ready for this, like, because I'm doing what I'm doing to talk to-you-me-law-contigua, because I'm a, I'm a, I'm a funny guy for what I do to do, but I have a little bit of sadness in my heart. I have a little bit of stichael of, how do you say sadness in Spanish? You know? Tristeza. Triteza. It's normal because you're human. But I have a lot of
Starting point is 00:46:43 that, like I feel guilty at times, but at the same time, I feel something. It's normal. I can understand you because that's a happen for me too.
Starting point is 00:47:00 You don't even think of triteza. When you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, when you, I didn't leave shit. Joe, oh, you me feel a last year's
Starting point is 00:47:10 old. All I remember of Cuba's a fucking beach. But it's no matter because you know the history of Moses in the Bible? Yes. It's the same. It's the same.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Moises, he's not remember nothing about the family. You go, you leave the Cuba when you have a three years old. but Moises live the moment taking the Moises
Starting point is 00:47:43 put in the Moise in the in the canada in Egypt yeah and Egypt yeah and Moeses
Starting point is 00:47:52 had a he was a year old one year old one years but inside in the and the spirit and the
Starting point is 00:47:59 how is his soul and the soul the the the Moise he he loved the people they do the people
Starting point is 00:48:10 is the same bro. What's the story Lee? It's the story of Moses. The Jews were slaves in Egypt. His mother, I think, had a baby with the king, right? Yeah. The Pharaoh. And that
Starting point is 00:48:23 wouldn't be allowed. So the mother put him in a little, reed little baby carriage that put him down the Nile River, and he got adopted by the Pharaoh's family. And he had a brother, but when he got older, and he escaped, he escaped
Starting point is 00:48:39 like the burning book. He found the burning Bush and I think I think he got in trouble because he he stopped an Egyptian guard from hitting a Jewish slave so he so that's but he he always knew even though he was raised
Starting point is 00:48:54 as an Egyptian royalty he couldn't let that happen He mirro that he, that a Egypt that was going to be a Jewel and an Israelita and in his own man in his And it's all he knew he was Jewish
Starting point is 00:49:09 She's bad for two things. One, because a human was going to
Starting point is 00:49:14 another, but also because I think that the person was the person.
Starting point is 00:49:19 You know? And that's what's the thing to you, you're and you think,
Starting point is 00:49:22 and you think you think you did you do? I do. I fucking feel terrible.
Starting point is 00:49:28 You know? I feel I feel terrible because I know that you'll say okay
Starting point is 00:49:34 well, you know, I had my own fucking set Like when I talk to my sister on the phone, you know, I don't know what to say that.
Starting point is 00:49:46 No she can't say that. But I don't know what to talk to because I never really met her. And I know her life, her mother left and told I was coming back. Sometimes, you don't need to say nothing because a gesture that's more than my word.
Starting point is 00:50:08 And then, A what you'll see if you know you know and you're and you're
Starting point is 00:50:13 and you're and you know, you know, I'm you know, you know, what can't
Starting point is 00:50:20 say you? You can't tell you? You don't you know to say but you have to
Starting point is 00:50:24 do you? You have to have you? 55. 55. I haven't seen her
Starting point is 00:50:31 in 52 years. She is major or than you? My own. So, you have
Starting point is 00:50:36 you, you for 52 years not have been No.
Starting point is 00:50:40 You don't say? For 52 years. So for 52 years. You know, you have said, I'm, you know what I've said, I'm, you know what I've said, you know what's been to say it now, you need to say it all right.
Starting point is 00:50:53 You need to have done it. That's it, so I shouldn't feel guilty? Yeah. It's a good fucking thought. I always felt guilty. I just really do. It's, uh, I never talked about on the podcast. because it never really came up before.
Starting point is 00:51:11 And that's why whenever I'm around, like in 85, when I really learned the pain of what was going on in Cuba, it just fucking killed me. I didn't know that you lived on three eggs a month. I didn't know that I went to my coffee from the same filter for fucking a month. I didn't know these things, Joe and Joel.
Starting point is 00:51:35 You don't know that I was sure that I was sure in Cuba. I thought Cuba was a fucking party. I didn't know. I mean, there was much sufficement, much, you know, sadness, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:51:45 I had no idea until I knew, met those people in 85. You know, when I was growing up, everybody hated fucking Fidel. When you were my talk to you, when I was growing up,
Starting point is 00:51:56 you couldn't even mention fucking Fidel in Union City. Ni lo, but I didn't see the lo, but I said that they, I didn't see my auntie. You know, and then over the years,
Starting point is 00:52:05 like here, like in Cuba, it slowed down a little bit. It's more accepting the Kuano. But I had the same, you know, in Cayocho, what do they do? They get together and talk about Fidel all fucking day long. It's too late. It's in the United States. It's too late.
Starting point is 00:52:23 You're in the United States. But you know, the human is the most problem with the human having inside the spirit. the people, the human no want to lose, no want to forget the past. You know, you need to say, how do you say, forgive? You need to forget the people,
Starting point is 00:52:48 you know. You need forget and forget, you need to forget, and forget, you know. Forgive and forget. You know, because the odio, the worst, the worst,
Starting point is 00:53:01 the worst, the infirmat is the odio. No, I know that. You know, I was telling somebody that day, that when you don't have anger in your heart, anger in your heart, you're not going to grow. You know.
Starting point is 00:53:13 You're not going to grow until you let that shit go. And that's what happened with me. For 20 years, I was proud of, how's God going to take a child's mother? You know, I was raised Catholic. I, I think, I know, I grew in Santa Barbara. I believe in all the world.
Starting point is 00:53:30 And it's a way, you know, that we're and for a law, for a transgression, we've been
Starting point is 00:53:39 to die. And we're and we're, and we're, and we're, and we're, and it's that God
Starting point is 00:53:47 took that decision. We're, we're not us who took us to be to apart
Starting point is 00:53:52 to God and that, and that then to let's, that penalty that is that's a
Starting point is 00:53:59 thing normal, me after, after, after, after that transgression that's
Starting point is 00:54:05 that's normal to get a normal to get a carriece, that you get a
Starting point is 00:54:12 a dolor of a head, that you don't know a dog, that you get a cause,
Starting point is 00:54:17 for that that's normal, you know, but also it's normal other things,
Starting point is 00:54:22 that, that there's a, that there's a cure for that there there's not the
Starting point is 00:54:28 sanity and this cure it. Let me ask you this last question.
Starting point is 00:54:32 That's it, brother. At Diaocchio, that's it. You're fighting for the championship. Thank you, God, yes. Thank you, God, yes. How do you feel? I feel blessed. I feel ready.
Starting point is 00:54:47 I say, God, thank you for this opportunity. Thank you for giving me this talent. You, you've put me in this incommienda, and let me with much more. and with all the with all the certainty of that I'm
Starting point is 00:55:08 put you, and you'll have put to, and yeah, how are you going to be different this time for Whitaker? How are you going to be different this time? I have a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:55:24 A lot of money, or you have a lot of tools in your chest? No, no, no, no. No, no. No, no, that's a joke. That's joking. That's joking. you have to pay and the people they're going to pay to see what's going to happen okay I'm a man at you
Starting point is 00:55:42 I just want to know for that you're going to be able to you're ready you're healthy I was going to take you to eat but I don't want to get in trouble to fucking make weight you know what I was going to take him to eat
Starting point is 00:55:59 but I don't need him to make weight so we got to start now You know, every day is different. Yes, it is. But I confide in God that day
Starting point is 00:56:11 I'm going to be not how I'm going to be better, because now now I'm now I'm I'm feeling.
Starting point is 00:56:20 What do you now? Two hundred and eight pounds. That's what you walk around and that's where he basically walks around it. No. That's not bad.
Starting point is 00:56:29 Two eight. And you're already working out again? You started working out already? Yeah. He never looked at him. He never stopped working out. But what happens to you?
Starting point is 00:56:43 Because you talked about that first loss and how you're looking back, you're happy about it. Do you take losses now a little bit more seriously because of people like Joey who, like you have, you have more, you have more than fans. Like we talk about we have family. You have the Cuban people behind you. Do you take that loss to Whitaker, like more seriously? do you think then other fighters take losses? La Pesda contrauella.
Starting point is 00:57:07 You, you tepelea, when you do you do that far, you don't you for you family, and to the Kuano, you fight for everything involved. That's the type of guy you are. When you lose, do you take a fight that seriously, or do you
Starting point is 00:57:24 look up and say, thank you God for giving me an opportunity another day to fucking live and bitch, I'll be back years like this. Just like that. That's the attitude you got to take. I can tell you about after his first loss with Whitaker, I saw him right afterwards. He had his wife, his daughter, hand in hand.
Starting point is 00:57:40 They're all walking together. And I look right in him. I'm fine. I'm great. I looked at him. It was the first time I ever see a fire that okay with everything. I said, you sure? He goes, everything is great.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Don't work. You have a good attitude, you are. And that's because of your humble beginnings. Thank you. That's why you have it. attitude that you have and it's a lot of ways the same attitude that I have
Starting point is 00:58:05 it's something of pride sometimes you know what I'd say because that's what I wanted to say you're talking about my attitude but I'm the same attitude that I have the same attitude it's very powerful you know I'm not going to stop
