Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to Comedy Central. Hey, everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast, the weekly show coming out every Thursday. We're going to be talking about the election, earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient-to-bread ratio on sandwiches. I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but
Starting point is 00:00:26 how many of them come out on Thursday. Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart wherever you get your podcast. I am loving this college bribery scandal story. For two reasons. One, because it's just a fresh story. There's no politics, you know, there's no like partisanship. It's just like a simple story about people doing a bad thing and they got busted and we can all talk about it. No one's fighting. I was just like, yeah, look at the bad thing. And I like it for another reason, because it raises like an interesting conversation
Starting point is 00:01:00 in and around whether or not America truly is a merit-based society because a lot of people say that in America. It was going to America if you work hard and you get where you need it going, it's like yes, but we cannot deny. Who you know makes a big difference in how far you can get in this country. Somebody has to open the door for you. Somebody has to open the door for you. I don't tell the door for you. I don't care who you are, where you are. You know what I mean? I've worked hard in my life, but I know that John Stewart was the person that to open a door and be like, hey, come into this world. Otherwise, I'll just be grafting hard in Africa, then what?
Starting point is 00:01:32 Because just like work so hard in Africa that someone in America is like, ah, the to work, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, and, and, and, and, to, and, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, to, to, and, like, to, like, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, and, and, and, and, and, and, to, and, to, and, to, to, to, to, and, to, to, to, and, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, at all, you know? Because think about, think about like the chain of events. You have rich parents who bribe your way into these schools. Now, this is the most egregious bribing, but you look at American schools for a long time, it's been a form of bribery in some way, shape or form, donating here, you're an alumni of this. it's not completely merit-based. And then those kids who get into those universities have degrees that are valuable because they get you into rooms where you get the best jobs. And having the best jobs means you get the highest money,
Starting point is 00:02:12 and then the wealth stays in the same place that you're in. And then people will say to someone else, they'd be like, well, if my dad was as rich as yours, maybe I would be at the same place that you're in, you know? Like, I couldn't afford to go to university. I remember when I wanted to go to university, and my family, we couldn't afford it. And then my mother said to me, look, I'll put all my money into your university if you pay half. That's what she said, this is crazy as shit. I was like, why would you send any kid to university?
Starting point is 00:02:49 I was like, wait, I'm paying the money so someone can teach me how to make money? Here's how it works. I'm going to keep my money.
