Starting point is 00:00:00 When 60 Minutes premiered in September 1968, there was nothing like it. This is 60 Minutes. It's a kind of a magazine for television. Very few have been given access to the treasures in our archives. But that's all about to change. Like none of this stuff gets looked at. That's what's incredible. I'm Seth Done of CBS News. Listen to 60 Minutes, a second look, starting September 17th, wherever you get your podcasts. You're listening to Comedy Central.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Bill Gates was hosting his goalkeepers event in New York, and so he invited me to come and speak. And they're doing some amazing things, not just the organization, who the people they're supporting. And, um, I get to the event and I speak for the the threats, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, the their, their, their, their, their, their, that, that, their, their, that, that, their, that, where, their, where, where, their, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, where, their, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, wherever, their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their, where, where, where, their, their their, threate, threate, threate, threate, threate, threate, threate, that, their, their, their, the, theat, theat, theat, they're doing some amazing things, not just the organization, the people they're supporting. And I get to the event and I speak for like 10 minutes and I get off stage and I'm waving at the crowd and I'm walking backwards off the stage, moving to the backstage area and then I crash into like a person. And as I crash into them, I see the eyes of people looking at me and everyone's like, oh, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I get, I get, I get, I th. And, I th. And, I th. And, I th. And, I'm, th. And, th the. th th th th th to th the th to th to the theat, I get the You know what I mean? And I'm like, calm down. Humans bump humans all the time. And I turn and the person I bumped into was Barack Obama. Right? Yeah, but like physically, when I say bump, I mean like bump, like, you know? And so I turn and then he's like, uh,
Starting point is 00:01:20 but literally his hands are up and then he's like, uh, watch where? they......... He's, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he's, he, he's, he, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. H. the the the the person, the person, the person, the person, the person, the person, the person, the person, the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. I, I, I, I, th. And, I, th. And, th. And, thi. And, thi. And, thi. th. the. the. thu. thu. thu. thu. And, thu. And, thu. And, th. And, his hands are up, and then he's like, watch where you go. And then, he says, yeah, he says, watch where you walk. And so, so I turned, and then I was like, hey man, I'm walking over here. And you should have seen everyone's face. They were like, oh, shit. Because I think they thought I didn't recognize him or I didn't know who he was. You can see people like, that's the president of the United States of America. And I was like, you, I'm a calm down. And so I was like, hey, how are you, Mr. President? I haven't seen you in a while. And he's like, doing good. And he's doing good. And I'm doing, he's doing good. I'm like, I'm doing good. I'm like, I'm doing. today, I'm doing. thrown, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And he's doing. And he's doing. And he's doing. And he's doing. And he's doing. And he. And he. And he. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, he. And, I. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And he's like, th. And he's like, th. And he's like Do you know what I mean? No, he just, he doesn't look as stressed as he was.
Starting point is 00:02:05 And so it slipped out. I didn't plan it at all. So I'm speaking to him, he's like, how you doing, da, da, da, da. And then he says that, and then I was like, and then I was like, and then I was like, no, no, I meant like you look good. What is my favorite accent to do? It depends on the day. I'm not gonna lie. It depends on the day.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Sometimes I'll choose an accent for the day if I'm on vacation. Genuinely, I'll just be like, I'll just be like, I'll just be like, oh, I'm Australian for the day. And I'll just be Australian for the great thing about an Australian accent is that you always sound happy. Because always, like, it doesn't matter what it is, but it always goes up and it's like really exciting, you know? It's just got that thing. Like even an Australian gave you bad news, it always sounds good. It's like, hey mate, your mom's dead.
Starting point is 00:02:54 It's just, so yeah. It's just, so yeah. One of my favorite things to do though is sometimes, because I don't really impersonate general accents, I impersonate people. So the Australian that I do is a friend of mine from Australia. And then like if I do like a Nigerian accent, it's a friend of mine from Nigeria. Because I can't, because people all have different accents. Do you know what the Australian accent is, I know what my Indian friend's, so I just impersonate his accent.
Starting point is 00:03:25 And then like Trinidad, I just know my friend from Trinidad. This is his accent, so I just do his accent. And then I remember like one dad did the Trini accent, and then people from Trinidad. They were like, they're like, they're like, that's not guys I haven't lived in America I've lived in America for a long time and like it's not my fault I didn't try to change my accent they're like you're leading Trevor no or wrong you're not speaking to where but they want
Starting point is 00:04:05 the clean versions of the songs. Mostly because I'm always fascinated by the people who are listening to the clean version and like do they just not know what's going on there? Like so like are there some people at these events where like a rapper comes and performs and like he's got lude lyrics and then the rappers up there and is like a stigma in her and she knows that it's like and I know that and then all there some people in the audience are like I wonder what he's sticking I wonder I wonder I wonder what you think is happening in the song like what clean versions of hip-hop like a clean v. their song like what the thi thinne. th is th is th is th is th is th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thin. thinnenenenenenenene. thin. the the the the their their their thi. their their some their their their their their their their their some their some their some their some their some their some their some their some their some their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their so so. thi. thi. I thi. I thi. I thin. I thin. I thin. I theeeeeeeeememem. thin. thin. theeeeeeeeemem-s. their their their their strange concept to me. Why would you want hip-hop just without like hip-hop? I like it. I like hip-hop a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:50 I just don't like some of the things they say. Which parts? Ah, you know the cussing, you know? Yeah, just like the lude sexual acts. Other than that, I love hip-hop. You sure you don't like country? No, no, like hip-hop. I like hip-hop a lot. And they should make clean versions of other songs for other people, like other styles of music. Because maybe like cursing is not something that affects you. Maybe you don't like country because you don't like heartbreak. So you can be like, can I get a clean version of the country song, but without the heart break in the song? And then when they sing it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thbreak in the song. And then when they sing it, it just doesn't have the heart break at all.
Starting point is 00:05:25 So just be like, Mary Jane, she, my heart. It's like, yeah, I don't want to hear about heartbreak. It's the clean version. That's what this is. When 60 Minutes premiered in September 1968, there was nothing like it. This is 60 Minutes. It's a kind of a magazine for television. Very few have been given access to the treasures in our archives. But that's all about to change. Like none of this stuff gets looked at.
Starting point is 00:05:53 That's what's incredible. I'm Seth Done of CBS News. Listen to 60 Minutes, a second look, starting September 17th, wherever you get your podcasts. So the blackout happened. Dave, what day was the blackout? Saturday. So, um, so Dave and I, we, we, we live in the same building, and he came from South Africa with me to come work on the Daily Show, right? And so, we're, it's blackout.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Our building is gone, everything is shut down, someone's trapped in the elevator, and we're all chilling together in Dave's apartment. He's the only person who had candles. I've never thought of candles. I've never, I've genuinely never thought of candles. He's just like, lit counts like, I didn't even think of these thi. And so our other friend who's staying in the building, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, the building, I, the thi, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, tho, tho, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. thiii. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, thithese things. And so our other friend who's staying in the building visiting comes down.
Starting point is 00:06:45 So now you've got these three black people from South Africa hanging out together. And we're just chilling. We're having a good time. And what happens is, because we're doing nothing now in the blackout. And so we needed to move a TV from one apartment to another apartment, right? Which I know is a ththing. But like, long story short, like one person needed a TV to watch something in 4K and they didn't have a 4K TV,
Starting point is 00:07:09 so we'll like, we'll move the 4K TV to your promise or you can watch the thing. So anyway, so we're like, okay, cool. Let's get the TV, it's like a 60-inch TV, you know, like carrying the thing, and then like walking in the hallway, and as we walk into the hallway, the lights come on. And then, and then like, all the neighbors come out, because everyone wants to see if the lights are on ever, so everyone like opens their doors in the hallway, and then it's like, we're there there with a TV. And you, you, and it's like, and it's like, and then, th, th, th, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the... the. the.. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the're there with a TV. And you know what's funny? Because I love my neighbors and we know each other. And you, like, the neighbors are, hey!
Starting point is 00:07:51 And they're like, hi Trevor, hi David. And we're like, um, it's our TV. We're just, we're moving it to another. And you could just see, it was like an awkward moment. It was like, oh, man. So in my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my family my family my family my family my family my family my family my family my family, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. And, you. th. And, you. th. th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. th th th th th th th th th another. And you could just see, it was like an awkward moment. It was like, oh, man. So in my family, my two younger brothers are, so from my mother's second marriage. And so I'm still the only person in my family who looks like this.
Starting point is 00:08:14 So my mom is African woman, black possa woman. My father's from Switzerland, so he was a white man. And so I look like this, and then remarried a black man so my brothers don't look like me either right and I remember what was really beautiful was my brothers we always spoke about this stuff so my parent they were like yeah different dads we get how this works so my brother one day I pick him up from school right he's like he's like he's a really young at the time was what maybe like I think it was a nice I think he maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he was maybe he was maybe he was maybe he was maybe he was maybe he was maybe he was like maybe I was like maybe I was like maybe I was like I was like I was like I was like I was like I was like I was like I was like I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was I was he he he was he he was he he he he he he he he he he he was like he was a th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I was like like. I was like. I, he gets in the passenger seat and he fastens these seat belts. And I'm like, what's going on, Isaac? And he's like, hey, Trevor, he's like, oh, kids, I just don't know what to do with kids, Trevor. You know, like, uh, kids, thanks.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Hea's today, thrown? Then I said, no, my brother is picking me up. Then he said, ah, who's your brother? Then I said, Trevor. Then now when we're walking, he sees you in the cart. Then he says, who's that, who's that? Then I said, who's that? Then he says, who's that, then, but how can your brother, how the brother, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, the, th, th, the, the, the, th. th. th. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. thr. thr. thr. thr. to, to, to, tooo, th. the, thee, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, mixed, you don't look the same. How can your brother not look the same? Then, so now I'm like, oh man, I'm gonna have to like go through this.
Starting point is 00:09:26 So then I'm like, so, so what did you say to him? And he's like, ah, Trevor, like, I'd have to explain it the way kids understand. He said, I just say to him, You can have like a white chocolate and you can have a duck chocolate and you can have a milk chocolate. But it's all Nestle, okay? I was thinking like, I think part of the problem in America is that 911, people think of 911 as being instant response. And because like when I was growing up in South Africa, one of my favorite TV shows
Starting point is 00:10:00 I used to watch with my mom was a show called Rescue 911, right with William Shatnerner. And it was like a show where they go like, 911, do you have an emergency? And it'd be like, hi, I'm in my house, and something, whatever, and then like 911, and then like 911, and then like 911, and then like 911, and then like 911, and this is like, 911, and we never thought of it their number, and they, and they, and they, and, and, and, and, and, and, they, they, they, they, and, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, like, like, they, like, they, like, like, do, they, they, like, they, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, they, they, they, they, they, th, th, th, they, th, they, they, like, like, like, they, like, like, like, they, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, they, like, like, like, they, like, they, like, they, they, they, they, they, they because they try to be like yeah we've also got a thing people like 10 triple one was like no and because they try to go with that feeling but we never thought of it as instant response because if you would call our like call senses it wouldn't be as efficient and so like in America I think people are used to the fact that something will get done now so I was thinking what you should do is just like to like the like like like like like the like the like the like the like the like the like the like the like the like the like the the the the th will like th will like th will like the th will like thu thu thu. th. th. th. Just like th. th. th. th. Just like thi. Just like the. th. the. the. the. the. the. th. the. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. they. they. they. they'll the. t. t. te. tell. tell. tell. tell. they'll. tell. they'll tell. they'll they'll try. try. th. th. operators here. Just so that people stop thinking 911 is like an instant solution. Because like South African, like they'll ask you questions. Like in America, they just go, someone's getting robbed, they're like we're on our way.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Like I heard with 9-1-1, even if you call them and then hang up, they'll come to check what happened. Which, I mean, I get it, I get it, but I'm also, I'm also, I'm also, I'm also, I'm also, I'm also, like, I'm also, like, like, like, I'm also, like, like, I'm, like, like, like, like, I'm, like, like, I'm, like, I'll, I'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, they'll, like, like, they'll, like, they'll they'll ask, they'll ask, they'll ask, they'll ask, like, they'll ask, like, they'll ask, like, like, they'll ask, like, they'll ask, they'll ask, like, they'll ask, they'll ask, they'll, like if they called, if you had South African operators doing 911, like you'd call, and he'd be like, hello, there's a man at the park, and they'd be like, hello, can I help you? They'd be like, yeah, there's a man at the park. And they'd be like, and, yeah, he looks really suspicious. Be like, okay, gotalking to him. Be like, okay, walk away then. Go away. Like, they would just be like, you go, like, people
Starting point is 00:11:32 here just like, the cops are not coming. For everything, like, here you can call 911 because your cat is in a tree. That is some crazy ass shit in Africa that you just be like, yeah, you'd be like, hello, my cat's in a tree, they'd be like, oh, okay. Yeah. You'd be like, I need, what would, my cat's stuck in a tree? They'd be like, yeah, so what must we do? I need to help it. They'd be like, then how will your cat learn? Let the cat suffer, there was nothing like it. This is 60 Minutes. It's a kind of a magazine for television.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Very few have been given access to the treasures in our archives. But that's all about to change. Like none of this stuff gets looked at. That's what's incredible. I'm Seth Done of CBS News. I'm Seth Done of CBS News, listened to 60 Minutes a second look on Apple podcasts starting September 17. I tried to start learning German because my dad is Swiss German, right? And so I was like I want to learn his language because I never learned it growing up and then someone was like, they were like, why don't you learn Swiss? And then I heard Swiss and I was like, no. I'll rather learn German. And so I learned German and I'd rather learn German. And so, I'd like, I want to learn German and so I'd to learn German and so I'd thrown. And so I thought it would bring us to him. I thought I'd to try and I'm told told told. told. told. told. told. the told. to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn to learn I'd to learn him him him him him again again again again again again again again I'd to learn him him him him I'd to learn him again again again again I'd to learn him him him him he he's I'd to learn him him him him him him him him him him him him him him he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he to learn he to learn he to learn he to learn he to learn he to learn he's to learn he was. to learn he was like. I'd to learn. I'd to learn. I'd to learn. I'd to learn. I'd to learn. I'd to learn to learn German. I'd to learn I'd to learn German. I'd to learn I'd to learn I'd and then like I started speaking to him in German and he was like, what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:13:05 I was like, I'm speaking German. He's like, no, it's better if you speak English. No, no, this is, no, this is, he's like, it's better if you don't speak to German, it's fine. But then now I could speak sounded a little bit like Hitler. Yeah, which no one told me on this side of the world because we don't know how he really spoke or anything, but I would be in Germany and apparently the way I would hit certain inflections
Starting point is 00:13:34 would freak people out. And it's like, think of it like Barack Obama's voice. Like if someone learned English in America and they got here and they were like, I just want to have a, you'd be like, hey, you're doing the Barack Obama thing and they'd be like, oh, what are you talking about?
