How are you doing?
Starting point is 00:02:07 How are you doing? How are you doing? How are you doing? Or should I say, Oscar winner? Dano? Danoosk? Daniel Kaluya, welcome back to the Daily Show. Or should I say Oscar winner? Come on.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Daniel Kalua. Welcome back to the Daily Show. Thank you, thank you. Thanks for having me. Thanks for having me. What do you mean? What do you mean? Thanks for having me?
Starting point is 00:02:37 You see, this is like, this Ugandan, you're a mannus. If you're in Nigerian, you'd thagan, you're thagan, you're the manners. If you're in Nigerian, you'd be like, I'm supposed to be here. No, no, I'll be like, you're welcome. Yeah, you're welcome. It's it would be. Yo, I would love to know, how do you stay motivated after an Oscar? I'm struggling. I'm struggling. I stay motivated. I think it's not motivated.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I'm not going to do it. It's just like, I see it like a master's. If you get a master's, you know what I've got a master's. What you gonna do with it? Okay. Do you know what I see? It's like, what am I gonna do with this? So like, all right, it's a key. All right, blu-blah-bub. Where am I saying? What kind of key is that?
Starting point is 00:03:13 that? People, you know, obviously we played the trailer and just a little piece of the movie there but nobody knows what this movie is about. Like, there were times when you didn't really know what was happening. I didn't know, like, you're looking up in the sky and there's clearly, there's no, I can't say it, but there's no thing in the sky. So you're like, they're like, I can't tha, but of the film, I'm like, ha ha ha. Like, there's nothing there. So you're like, and you go, what's it going to look like? And then they'll show you some like skeletal kind of CGI in and you're like, yeah. But so you kind of have to like imagine it and then like.
Starting point is 00:03:55 But you have to trust Jordan. Yeah. You know, he, I feels like you're the greatest actor that he's ever worked he says in many ways you're his denero which is a huge compliments you know because because the relationship you have a special yeah I remember when I realize there was a there was a scene the give me the key scene I get out that was improvised and uh yeah there was a there was a whole scene that was a whole scene that was a the'm like instinctual like so I'm like no I don't this isn't he's got to get out like it's like what's he talking it's in the movie time he's gonna let's get out and then and then I was like it's not working it's
Starting point is 00:04:29 not working and he just removed all the lines and he said just ask her for the keys just ask the keys he's he knows he's he knows he he's the to just the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the he's he's I I I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just he's just just just I just he's I just he's I just he's I just he's I just he's I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I just I I I I I I I I just I just I I just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just I I I I I I I I I the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. So I did it. There was no like, there's no back and forth. I just, oh, give me the keys. I just shouted at Alice and give me the keys, give me the keys, and that was the what was stated. That was in the film. That was one of the most powerful scenes in the film. That's what I feel like you have. It's exactly what youthis, it's an uncanny ability to understand, not even who the character is on the page, but who the character is inside of you. You know, like, I've always wanted with any amazing actor, are there parts of the character that you keep with you or, are you able to just like turn it off and then you're done after the project? No, it stays with you it. It stays with you have to kind of like, you, to, to, the, to, to, the, the, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the, th, th, th, the, th, the, th, th, th, the, th, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th. th. tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, who, who, the, tha, who, the, the, who, the, the, who, the, I usually like go away for a week by myself and you have to kind of get back to yourself and go damn what were my habits and because you're doing his habits and you are your habits
Starting point is 00:05:30 so you're doing this person's habits for like four months and then you but you're not you're away from yourself you're here so you have to kind to go travel back to yourself and go oh I want to watch this YouTube video about silly stuff and I watch Instagram video about I know LeBron James saying something like and you go get back to yourself you know, you know, to you know, back to yourself, you know, I love you, you know, I love you, I'm, she's just amazing. She's just amazing, she's just amazing. I feel like you two have become best friends. Everywhere I've seen you together, it feels like you're like siblings now, essentially.
Starting point is 00:06:08 She's deeply annoying, yeah. That's my girl though, man. That's my girl, no. But she knows how to push my buttons. And she's like, digital. It's funny. It's funny, we have like, we call it a sibilance. Oh, I like that. So like, we have a brother and sister kind of, that dynamic, me and key. When you're working with somebody like that, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:28 again, trust comes into the picture. You know, you're performing together, you, you're spending so much time together. You, do you think it improves your relationship, Relationship improve the situation that you're in like which way does it go? Because I know you don't always meet the actors beforehand sometimes you meet on set So you see you see a person's character when you're like going up against them You see how generous they are you see how much they can't like see how much it's how much they're there for themselves or they're there for the script What you see who they're serving because sometimes they're serving the director sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes so so so so so so sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes so so so so so so so so so sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes sometimes so so so so so so so so so so so so stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff. so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so you so that in life anyway. So it's just a mirror. Everything is like what comes first of chicken or the egg. But I like, especially if you have a close
Starting point is 00:07:10 kind of relationship with a character, spending time with him beforehand and just going out and just being silly and just rolling out. I love that. She took me to a house party. It was cool. It was a good house party. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. to. to. to. to. to. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to th. th. th. th th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. I. I. I. I. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. thi. thi. thi. t tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooes. I th happened there, but I won't. I've been lucky enough to know you, you know, across the years, and you have maintained that sense of self. You have maintained that generosity.
Starting point is 00:07:31 You have kept Daniel intact, which is not easy in the industry that you're in. I noticed recently that you joined Instagram. And what fascinated me was the fact that you're such a private person, you've always been. How do you see you sharing a piece of your world as someone who's extremely private? I'm still figuring it out. Because I just feel like, I'm try not to overthink it and just go, okay. This is what I'm doing today. Like, I'm like, I'm kind of like using that, the platform to show joy in it. Because I feel like, all right, cool, let's show people have fun, we have fun. We have fun. And like, it's a platform so then you create more fun in your life to then put theirs.
Starting point is 00:08:09 So then it contributes to your life. So then I'm like, cool, I'm going to go to a theme part today and then how can we do that. Let's show that. That. That. That. That. That. That. I. I. I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, and, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th.. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th.. th. th. th. th. th. th. then, then, th. then, then, then, then, the.... Like I care, like I care about the audience. I was just busy playing other people. I was just in my head. I was like, I was going in another one or another one and I was like, why don't you post? Who am I like, I don't know, like, what am I like, a bit more into myself? I'm like, oh, cool, yeah, this is what I do. Like, I was, I was, I was, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, th............... th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th.'t, so then now I'm like a bit more into myself.
Starting point is 00:08:45 I'm like, oh yeah, this is what I do. Like, oh, yeah, this is a little bit of that. But I'm still figuring it out. Before I let you go, there's one question I've been dying to ask you. And this is from the Oscars, you know, when you're the only person that's that's that's the only person that's asked me. Only person has ever asked me like, yeah, you, I'm stopping your question, go ahead. No, like, that was, it was a really fun moment, and you were like, and you were joyous and you were thanking like, like, your favorite rappers from the UK and it was such a joyous moment, but you didn't notice. their mom was there. their. their. their. th. their, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, no, no, I'm, I'm, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, I'm, no, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I, which is probably why I did it. No, but who's in the audience? No, she was in life, so it was a live call. Oh, they cut to them, yeah, that's what I mean.
Starting point is 00:09:27 But they cut to your mom in the audience, you want to say, right? So she's in the audience. And then you go on to thank I would like to know, how did you avoid the volcano that comes... Did she say anything to you about that? Of course she did, like, but like, but like, it was months later, like, it's cooking. It's still cooking. Like, it's still, if I did, like, but, um, but like, I was like, I've got your personality.
Starting point is 00:10:04 But, yeah, it was interesting. I face time the right after, I was like, mom, mom, mom, mom, mom, mom, mom, I'm joking. It happened, but I'm joking. But I'm like, people asked me, like, why did you say that? I'm like, how did you get here? Like, how did you thi? And their, like, like, like, like, like, like, you know, it's like, it's all right. Yeah, but African parents are like, we know how we got here,
Starting point is 00:10:26 but we don't talk about it, huh? You don't need to talk about it, so you know, I'm a renegade. Well, you know what, Daniel, Canneau, thoooo, thank you, th, th, th, th, th, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, like, like, like, like, like, like, that, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to talk, to talk, to talk, to talk, to talk, to talk, to to to to you, to you, to you, to you, to you, to, to, to, to, to, the to, the the the the the thea, thea, toda, thea, thea, thea, today, today, today, to to to to to to to to to to to to.
