Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to Comedy Central. Hey everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast. The Weekly Show is going to be coming out every Thursday. So exciting. You'll be saying to yourself, TGID. Thank God it's Thursday we're going to be talking about. All the things that hopefully obsess you in the same way that they obsess me. The election. Economics. Earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about
Starting point is 00:00:34 ingredient to bread ratio on sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance, it's probably second. I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday? I mean, talk about innovative. Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart, wherever you get your podcast. Please welcome Elaine Welter, and Philip Picardy. Welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Thank you. Thank you for having us. Welcome to Trump's America. Indeed. Because this is a strange moment, right? Teen Vogue. He had a. Indeed. Because this is a strange moment, right? Teen Vogue, here to talk in essence, politics, which is not something that Teen Vogue is known for.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Well, I mean, I think that young people are particularly civically engaged right now. We saw with Standing Rock, we saw with Black Lives Matter that young people were leading these revolutions and these movements and were on the front lines. And so we really wanted to make a point as the new leadership of Teen Vogue to really talk meaningfully to those readers and show young women that they can be interested in politics, that they should be interested in politics, and that they should have a firm opinion about what's catching on. Let's talk a little bit about the issue itself before we go into the numbers, which has been doing really well.
Starting point is 00:02:14 But you've come out with a new format now, so the magazine is not going to come out ten times a year, but now it's going to be quarterly. And each issue has a theme, for instance this one it says, like you know the sex, the coming out, the obsession, the love issue. thapapapap. But, but th. But, th. And, the magazine, tho, th. And, thi, thi, the thi, the thi, thi, the the the the the the the the the the tho, the tho, the tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, and thi, and thin, thin, and, and the the the the theeeease, and the the thean, and the thean, and thean, and the thean, and the thean, the thea.ean, thease, th like for instance this one it says like you know the sex the coming out the obsession the heartbreak but it's really the love issue. Yeah it's all about young love I think the one thing that we can all agree with is that the world just needs more love right now and right so that's that's what we focused on for our first issue out of the gates. We have Bella Haddeed who's a talks about what it's like to be queer in, young and queer in Trump's America.
Starting point is 00:02:52 And I think my favorite piece actually in the entire issue is a story about an 18-year-old Syrian refugee girl who talks about her her herheraling tale of leaving her home in search of freedom and finding love on the other side. So, you know, every... Thank you. It's really all about self-love and for us, you know, Teen Vogue has grown up a lot in the last 14 years and so we wanted a magazine that reflected that. And so we're actually bigger and better than we've ever been, we're literally physically taller to stand to stand out on the new the an the an the an the an the an the an tha... And, the an the an the an the an tha. tm. tmse. tmue. tmue. tmo, tmo, tmo, tmo, tmo, thae, tha-a, tha-a, thaeo, thaeo, thae, thau. And, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha. And, tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. And, tha. And, tha. And, tha. And, ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttthau. And, tttttthau. thau. ttttthau. thau. tttthau. tthau. thau. thau. tt, to stand out on the newsstand, to show everyone that we, you know, a big evolution is underway at Teen Vogue.
Starting point is 00:03:27 Yeah, here's a question most people would have. They'd say, you are Teen Vogue. You are known for fashion. Stay out of politics, what the hell do you guys know about politics anyway? Well listen, these two things are not mutually exclusive, right? That was like, thi. thi. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, here, thi, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here. thi here. thi here, here. Here. Here, here, here, here, here, here, here. Here, here, here, thi here, thi here, thi, here, here, here thi, here, here thi, here, here, here, here, here, here, thi, thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi here that was like, that could have been your response. That is my response. Enough said. But listen, these two things are not mutually exclusive, right? You know, Elaine and I have worked together for a long time,
Starting point is 00:03:51 and we've always been interested in beauty and fashion as a way to represent yourselves and tell a story, and so to tell a teenager that frankly irresponsible and we want to make sure that we have space to show her. It's powerful. Have you seen, you know, everyone is afraid of losing business when they get involved in the conversation. Have you seen a decline, have people gone, hey thanks Teen Vogue, we're signing out, no politics for us? Quite the opposite actually, since Phil has come on board a, the to, to, their, to, their, to, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, and, is, is, and, is, and, is, is, is, and, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is a, is a, is a, is a the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their, isa, they.a, isa, they.a, isa, isa, is a.a, isa, isa, isa, is a.a, is a.a, actually. Since Phil has come on board, we've actually gone from 2 million
Starting point is 00:04:27 Uniques to 10 million uniques on Teen Vogue.com. So credit to all the work you're doing. And you know, Phil and the digital team have done a tremendous job, really transforming Teen Vogue. From being mainly a fashion site to becoming a really credible political news source that directly speaks to young women. And that's so important right now. And then, you know, on the flip side for the print side, we actually are up in print subscriptions,
Starting point is 00:04:54 which are really excited about. And I think that just speaks to the idea that compelling, consistent content that has a very specific voice is always going to be valuable, particularly when you're focused on, you know, the the the the the the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice the voice th thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that that that that to to to to speak to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak to speak, to speak, to speak, to speak, to to to to to to to to thi, thi, thi, thi, thi.e, thi.ei.ei.e.e.e.ea.ea.e.e.e.e.e.e. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe is always going to be valuable, particularly when you're focused on, you know, giving a voice in a face to underrepresented groups. And I have to say, like, you know, for many brands, I think the digital in print, voices can feel separate. For Teen Vogue, our collaboration and our working together has made a very consistent product. To work in digital media, we have 70 stories we publish a day on the task. So it's to to to to to to to to to to to to to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, to work, thoiii, thoick, thoick, thoom, their, their, thoick, their, their, thoom, tho, tho, tho, thoom, thoom, thoom, thoom, thoom, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, and, you, their, their, their, their, their, you, their, their, their, 70 stories we publish a day on the site. So it's a lot that comes across our desks. To make space for the marginalized and for people whose voices and stories are not told
Starting point is 00:05:29 in a print magazine and on the covers of these magazines in particular means a lot. It's putting your money where your mouth is. And I think our audience really represents that. It's a testament to be at the table talking about politics as every young woman does in America right now. Absolutely. That's what great responses you want to get. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for what you're doing. You guys are doing an amazing job. The new issue of Team Vogue will be available on national news stands. February 21st and you can go to Team Vogue.com to read the cover stories now.
