Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to Comedy Central. Hey, everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast, The Weekly Show, coming out every Thursday. We're going to be talking about the election earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient-to-bread ratio on sandwiches. I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday. Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart wherever
Starting point is 00:00:31 you get your podcast. My guest tonight is the co-creator and star of NBC's The Carmichael and can be seen in the new movie Transformers The Last Night. Please welcome, Jeromeon Car Michael. Thank you. Thank you very much. I really wanted to wear a suit. I really wanted to wear a suit. I did, man.
Starting point is 00:00:51 But I feel like you say that to me. And I think... It got lost in the thing, it was a thing. I feel like you take advantage ofto me and I got lost in the thing it was a thing I feel like you take advantage of the fact that we're friends Yeah, so what you do is you make minimal effort when you come to my show Yeah, because last time you were here you didn't wear a suit and then you were like I'll make sure I wear a suit next time I know but I feel so comfortable I feel so what I would pick on to pick you up from the airport. That's what happens in relationships. People get comfortable and they start wearing the baggy clothes.
Starting point is 00:01:28 I want to see your body, Gerard. I want to remember you the way, I remember you when we first met. I know, well I was wearing worse shit than this one we first met. I mean, this isn't the worst thing ever. I mean this isn't the worst things thing thing things things things things things things things th w w w w w w w w wa. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. I'm thi. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm thi. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. I thi. I thin. I thin. I thin. I'm thin. I'm thin. I'm th. I'm th. I'm theea. I'm thi. I want thi. I want thi. I want thi. I want thi. I want thi. I want thea. I want th. I say to you, very important. I've been watching, especially this week with Philando Castile and just talking about it and I think it's beautiful, I think it's incredible, really, really important. Thank you. And you used to be said, it is great. It's so great. People don't talk about the fear. No. Like it's a real fear, you know, because people are only really afraid of stuff that like, like, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi only really, you're only really afraid of stuff that like could affect you. Right. That's just kind of natural human behavior, right? Like, you know, if you told me that like
Starting point is 00:02:09 your dad died in a hot air balloon accident, I'd be like, oh, well, that's not that sad. I mean, just don't get in a hot air balloon. That's crazy. I just won't do that. I just won't thrown. that's, I just, I just cancer and you get frightened because you can be affected by cancer. Exactly. I don't know, man, what's going on? It's like really truthfully a cancer for, you know, black males who are just going through this every single day. It really is like a cancer. So it's, it's important to hear you say things about it.
Starting point is 00:02:37 I appreciate that in a bit. We have to talk about transformers. Okay, but we can't just talk about transformers. You have to, you know, black men are dying. But so you play. No, let me explain. Let me explain. Let me explain. You know what happens is people get into this conversation where they go, how come black actors and performers only have to speak about that? And they don't get an opportunity to speak about the fun things and the good things they're doing.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And you're like, the two can coexist. You can be in a transformer movie and at the same time be going through a lot as a black person in America. Yeah. But I'm still thired thired the thired. I'm thired. I'm thired. But I'm thired. But I'm thired. But I'm thired. But I'm thired. But I'm thired. But I'm thuuette. But I'm thuette. But I'm tho. tho. tho. tho. the the the the that, I the. the. to to to to to to to to to to to the the to to the to the the the the to the the to the the to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the thu. thu. the. the. the. the. the. the, the, the, the thu thu thu thu thu thu thu the the the, the the the. the th of the police than I am most transformers. Like, you know, terrified of the police. You know what I do every morning? I pick up, I pick out outfits and I decide, like, I have to describe the outfit as though it's going through a police scanner. You know, and it's just like, that's how I think about getting dressed. It's an insane, very real thing that I do. And just some outfits you feel safer in than others, you know?
Starting point is 00:03:46 You have to preface your outfit with suspect was last seen. And it's just like suspect was last seen wearing a black hoodie. It's like, I'm taking a chance to that. Going out there, I don't know what's going to happen. It's like, suspect was last seen. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. th. th. thi. thi. th. th. thi. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th, try to be really specific. Like certain things coming through a police skater is just like, yeah, right, I think he's harmless. The, it's funny that you, you talk about that, you know, because as comedians, we joke about the truths that we live in experience. And what I love about the Carmichael show is thi, you, thso, th th th thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi, I thi. I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I'm, I'm, I'm, I thi, I'm, I'm, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I th of people I've seen as a cast together. The stories that you talk about are so timely.
Starting point is 00:04:27 I mean, just yesterday I was watching the episode where you were talking about the n-word or nigger, which every way people want to put it. I mean, well it depends. Some people like to know. I just want to look directly in the show. Yeah, no, we fought for it, except for this, bitch-ass station and Raleigh. I'm just mad at them because it's like so childish to do that. The censored, like, the, under the illusion of protecting, you know, people in a decency thing,
Starting point is 00:04:57 but it's really just a company protecting it. Why was it so important? Because it's like, I really that's that think think that think thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, the thi, the the thi, thi, their their, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, is, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, is just, the the the the the the the their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, thi, their, thi, thi, their, their, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, is, their, is, is, is, is, is, it's like, I really think that the conversation that was said is important. It's important to know that, you know, even black people have like a very diverse way of looking at it. Like, it's like my views of it, difference from that of my dad and my mom and my grandmother and like everyone feels so differently about the word that I was like, oh, this is an interesting conversation and then, Ralei.... like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, like, like, th, like, th, like, like, like, like, like, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th.. th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. Like, th. th. Like, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. igh. You know we said nigger like why are you okay it just seems weird to just like you know. Do you do you find do you find that there has been an acceptance or a backlash to how the Carmichael show
Starting point is 00:05:37 tackle these issues because you it's not just the n-word show that you have it's not just a show about mass shootings you tackle everything from Bill Cosby all the way through to infidelity and abuse, but it is a funny show. Like, no one watches the car, Michael go. No, no, no, no, but that's what makes it funny is that it's not benign.
Starting point is 00:05:54 It's a show where you go like, oh, this is real. This is the conversation's happening. But do you ever the th you th you th you th th th th th th th is th th th is th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. that is that. that. that is that is a that. that. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. that is that is a funny is a funny is a funny is a funny. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th is a funny. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thin. thin. thin. the. thea. thea. to. to. to. to. to. to. thea. to. the. thea. the. the. th. th. comedy show? Why are you putting that on TV? Yeah, I mean, some people don't like to think with what they're watching or listening to or stuff like that. I mean, I've always been, I mean, that's why I've always been a fan of this show. It's just the, like, I like to think while I'm viewing, you know, and like, some people don't like that. Some people like, some, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, th, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they're, they're, they're, they're what, they're, they're, they're, they're what, they're what, they're, they're, they're, they're what, they're what they're what they're what they're what they're what they're what, they're what, they're what, they're what, they're what, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, I. they're, I. they're, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like to turn your brain off when you watch television. I never liked it. As a kid, I didn't like it. I hated blues clues.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I would hate watch blues clues because I would just be so angry. It's like, it's, the clues right fucking behind you, Steve. What the fuck are we doing? You were an angry child, manned. That was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that was that. That was that was that was that. That was me. That was me. That was me. That was me. That was me. That was me. That was that. That was that. That was me. That was that. That was that. that. that. that. that. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. I. I. I. I. I. I. th. th. I. I. th. I. I. I. I. th. I. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th th th th th th th t t t t t too. t t t t th th th th th th th th th th th, that was me age six. Okay, well pull out the notebook. Ah. Frustrated, you know? What are you looking?
Starting point is 00:06:52 So transform, okay. We're not going to go back to transformers now. It was the dinosaurs. We talked about that. It was a great scene. I see that your character was worried about the job that he had to perform because he wasn't quite sure of what he had to do. It didn't involve. And you summarize the fuck out of that. Yeah, we don't know what you're doing. Yeah. It was funny. It was cool. Before I let you go, what are your plans for the future of the show? What are your plans?
Starting point is 00:07:17 What are your plans for yourself? Because I mean, now you're a showr of a show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show show a show show a show creator, which is not easy to be at your age. You are a successful comedian, you have a platform, you're doing things. Where are you going from here? What do you want to do? I don't know, I like to think pretty immediately. I'm gonna get a sandwich after this. Uh, no real plans. No, real plans. to be theimes, you got stopped eight to ten times? How many times have you stopped? Oh, like a dozen, man.
Starting point is 00:07:45 I'll tell you. You say it's a big number. I know, but it's still a lot, man, because you're like, you know, you look way more innocent than me. Is this like my face or like, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Get a stamp every time you do it and get like, I don't know, like some donuts or some shit. You know what to be done? Is it like, fifth time free?
Starting point is 00:08:07 Yeah, fifth time free. You know, on the police? No, just free. They should be like, the fifth time you get stopped. Yeah. You just get off with, you just get off with, you're like, yeah, thrown, it's like, oh, the the key part of it. We go like, all right, we understand that this is going to happen consistently. So at least let there be some sort of reward system where you go, alright, you stop me and there's not, stamp.
Starting point is 00:08:28 You stop me, your stamp. Stam, stamp, stamp. And then you'll get a five, and then you'll get a free cash. Theatr-tahs. Dude, always good to have you on the show.
