I tweets that he's written about the future that have come true, there's things that, like he's predicted things. We just don't appreciate him, that's the thing. Mostly about himself though, unfortunately. Yeah, well, I mean, that's still genius in my opinion. I mean, to tweat things about yourself as a future president and then it comes to, I don't think, but we'll just leave that there, as they say,

in the cable news biz. I know that when I'm preparing for a show, whether it's a weekday afternoon or a Sunday morning, often whether it's a Trump tweet or just something else in the news, but usually it has something to do with President Trump, there's an eruption of news, a big news story, and I'm wondering how that affects you and your show, if it affects you and your show, if you have to recalibrate suddenly because all of a sudden the big news story is blocking out the sun. I think what we've come to realize is there is no news cycle, there is no schedule, there is no plan. You know, when we started the daily show with Trevor Noah and I

just taken over from John the news cycle used to have a certain cadence to it there was a rhythm and so you knew that at a certain time there would be no news so you could compile all of your stories you could create a show. Now there's the 530 curse we call it. We're at 530 p.m. Somebody's getting in the tweet is coming out, somebody is getting into some scandal, something is going to happen. And so we've had to... We don't call that a curse, by the way, in the newsbiz. We call that Manna from Heaven, but...

Is that... We like it. We don't like it because we, this is true. This is true. I don't even know why you guys making that a thing. Why are they laughing? Yeah, and so we've had to learn to embrace that as opposed to running away from it. So we create the show for the day, and we know full well, there's a good chance that

at 5 p.m. We'll have to throw out most of the show most most most most most, the show most, the show most, the show, thi to what's happening on the day. And we've gotten good at it, we enjoy it. I think we've acclimatized to the chaos. And one of the ways that you do that, I want to bring in some of the news team here, is one of the ways you do that is this incredible digital presence, where I think it's, I'm told it's the most engaged inaged, on television in 2018. You've been told correctly. 63 million interactions, 63 million interactions.

Right. For instance, the last one I saw that just naturally appeared in my feed was the Jesse Smollett story starring two gentlemen over there. How did that, I mean, Djibouki, I know that you had already made jokes. We saw it, just air, about how white people think you look like Jesse Smolet, even though you do not....... the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. the last. It's. made jokes. We saw it just air about how white people think you look like Jesse Smalllight, even though you do not look like Jesse Smalllight. But how did, how did, I mean, first of all, that was kind of gutsy, gutsy because it's still kind of an uncomfortable thing to talk about the Jesse Smaller situation. How did that come about?

I thought that that the narrative that that that that that that was unfolds. Chicago Police Department was just so already an empire plot line or like a lifetime plotline that just like laying that out as it's been described is just so absurd that it just sort of lent itself to a sketch format so we pretty much just like found out that morning and like threw it together and it was like maybe five hours that we did it it was like very bang up we just did it and yeah and yeah and Roy your you're a training, mastering a Nigerian accent came into it. Well, yes. You have to understand that as a performer, I studied the Nigerian dialect all after the

minutes. Minutes he spent on minutes. To be one of the Nigerian attackers, yes. But it's very fun that we have the capability now at the show to be able to tel to to to to to to the the to the the the the the to the the the the to the the the the the the the the the the the the tel. to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be one of the Nigerian attackers, yes. But it's very fun that we have the capability now at the show to be able to tell jokes in a lot of different mediums. It doesn't just have to be at the desk. It doesn't have to be a desk chat. It doesn't have to be a field piece. We go, here's the best way to disseminate house where we can turn stuff around fast enough so that we don't get hit with the 530 curse or the next day the narrative is somewhere totally different

and the sketch is useless. Was there any part of it for either of you that you felt uncomfortable doing just because that's the story? I just know like covering that story was uncomfortable from beginning to end. Was there any part of you that's where the money is, that's where the comedy is. I was reticent to make it seem like I had full faith in the Chicago Police Department. Because, you know, that's kind of their thing. And you're from Chicago. Yeah, and I'm from Chicago.

So, like, I sort of do have an experience of what they can do and what they're capable of, but at the same time, there were so many things that were presented where it's like, you have to talk about this and mention it. There are like some irrefutable points that were brought up. So I feel like that was one thing where I feel like giving them too much credit almost. It's like, I don't know, you don't want to side with their, I guess. They want to seem like I'm their best friends. So yeah, I feel like that was kind of one thing. And Ronnie, one of the things that's great, I think, about the Daily Show is I sometimes learn about news stories because you guys are going there and doing, making fun of the situation in a way. And really it became a larger piece about criminal justice reform. Yeah. Was it scary at all going into that biker gang and trying to make friends with them? Uh,

uh, are they watching this? Um, they were they were, uh, it was, it was, it was, because we were trying to show them as not a biker gang. They were just like a group of people hanging out, but they made it hard to show that. They were very distrustful of... But they want like a gang. They were just a group of motorcycle guys, but I guess they watched too much sons of an or something, because they wouldn't like let us just like, make fun of them. They, they, it took a while to get their trust that, you know, we're just trying to show you guys

as normal guys, like you are? And they're like, oh, okay. And then, yeah. So, but the good thing about field pieces is, to go, to go, to go, to go, the, the, and in some ways gain control back of what we want to say on the show because sometimes not sometimes every day on the daily show what kind of we can be slaves can I say slaves to I will allow it okay that's the black community in a not show yeah me and Roy share an office and we have this every day I'm asking words I can say I can say okay that the show. And I remember Trevor, like early on, like just when, just before the election actually, we were at the Paley Center. And you said, like, are you looking forward to this election? The question was, are you looking for this election be over? And you said, yes, because we can finally go back to talk about what we want to talk about. Obviously, you're not expecting the result that happened. So sometimes you have to out and talk about something else and kind of talk about what we want to talk about as a show.

Dulce, let me ask you, you did that great piece about, now I forget the name of this woman, but the annoying woman who reported that little girl who was selling water. What was the nickname? What was it? I think that was permit patty. Permit patty. So it seems like it seems like there's... I like how we say it like that's her government name. Oh yes. Yes, Permit Patty, I believe it was. It sounded like you were both having a tremendous amount of fun talking about her, but also venting a little bit. And how much is this show help all of you get things off your chest that you want to be saying,

the things that are frustrating here? Well, I think, um, Trevor asked me one day, like when I'm doing a field piece or I'm coming up with an idea for something, what's my thought process in reference to like asking someone questions or how respond to something, and I was like, you know the first thing that pops in your head and you automatically automatically the the the the the the the the the the the the tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho thi thi thi, like I thi, like I thi, like I tho, like I'm tho, thi, thi, thr, thi, thi, the. I'm, the. I'm, thi. thi, thi, thi, thi... thi, thi, thi..... thi, thi, thi, thi....... I's, thi.. I's, thi... I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I's, thi. I's, thi. I's, te, te, te. I'm, te. I'm, tei. tei. tei. tei. tei. tei. tei. te. te. te. te. te. And I was like, you know the first thing that pops in your head and you automatically go, I shouldn't say that? I say that. So, which gets me in a lot of trouble, but I still work here. But I think a lot of times that first thing

that you're trained not to say is your truest response to something. That's what I said as well, yeah. I don't like dogs, so I said as well. I don't like dogs, so I don't know. But it seems like it's never about what the person is doing. It's always about you need to be afraid of me. And that's all that ever is. A white person calling the cops and a black person is going, I don't like how you're in my space.

And I know how to check you. It's always a check. You call a bunch of people, you call a the cops. cops, somebody picks up. Right.

Just feels good to have somebody answer. You're speaking from experience. This is why America's response. We need more connection in life, is what I'm trying to say. Your mom always answers. Call your mom. Youngest of four kids, she does not always answer when I call her. Well, maybe you ain't the favorite, because I am.

Did you ever in your wildest dreams when you're coming up as a comedian think that the president was just going to be gifting you with so much fodder, so much... It is endless. I think that that is such a refilable. It'll just keep going and going. It's like every single day. you with with with with with with with with with with with with with he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is thi th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It is th. It is thi. thi. thi. thi. It is thi. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. It is th. Is there one that sticks in your mind as being particularly? I mean, Kofifi was pretty phenomenal. Well, the best part about the Twitter library is that there's a giant screen that is a live feed of Trump's Twitter. And when he, if he tweets while you're there, an alarm goes off? And it happened in Miami, so like different people they're interviewing us and the alarm goes off and everyone goes, Trump tweeted! And then we ran over to the screen. And I was like, one one one the the the the th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. Well, th. Well, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th........ That's, th. That's, th. That's, th. That's, th. That's, th. It's, th. It's, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. thi. thi. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. then we ran over to the screen. And then I was like, what am I doing?

But it's exciting because there's a lot, you're like, it's a thing. But it's amazing to see, you're like, wow, foolishness and action and a live stage. It's amazing. And Trevor, I've told you this before, but one of my favorite things that you've added to the show is between the scenes. So people are familiar between the scenes? It's... How did that... It just explains people who don't know what that is, what it is, and how did that come to be?

Um, so... Pretty much what you see on the stage is what happens at the show all the time. We all make jokes with thoks thoks th jokes th jokes th jokes the jokes th jokes th jokes th jokes the jokes th jokes thoes thoes tho- tho- tho- tho tho- thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th happens at the show all the time. We all make jokes with each other, we all have our opinions, Dulce trashing Michael. I call the cops. Ronnie is checking what racially things are racially acceptable with Roy. And one of the main things I do at the studio is I have fun with the audience, you know, so we're taping the daily show and you know when we step down for like the space between ad breaks. We the the the the to to the to to the the to to the the to the the to the the the the the the the the the the the thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, tasea-s, the, tasey-s, thae, thae, tre, tre, I's, I's, I's, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's-s-s-s-s, I's, I's, I's, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their-s, their-s, their-s, their-s, tase-s, taseylosea'-s, ta'-s, ta'ease, ta'ease, ta'ease, ta'ease, ta'-s, the-s, know, so we're taping the daily show and you know when we step down for like the space between ad breaks, because we basically tape live to tape, which means we know we try not to have retakes, we just try to have the show as authentic as possible.

And so in between what I do is I'll just chat to the audience. about what's going on in my head, maybe there's like some ideas that aren't fully formed, some pieces of information that I have, maybe larger conversations, and I don't know which way they're going to lead. And I used to do this with the audience all the time, and one day it was actually someone who came to the show and said, hey, they came twice. And they were like, how do I watch this part as well? I was like, how th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th. th. th. th. th. th. And they were like, why don't you film it? I was like, I don't have an answer for that. I never... It was such a simple question, and it was an honest audience member who just said to me,

hey, why don't you, why don't you just film that? Because I wanted to, you said something, because they weren't here with me. And so then I said, well, why don't we just record perpetually? You know, while the show is happening, we record, and then when we stop, we just keep recording. And at first, people were just like, are you sitting yourself up for some scandal? Because I mean, you don't know, when the cameras are on. And I was like, yeah, but what I say is what I say, and let's put. And let, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and we, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, th.. th. I'm like, that's not how viral works. So what it was was just an organic place for me to engage with an audience and go, there are things I don't know about. Like, everything that we create on the show is a culmination of everyone who works on it. You know, it's our scriptw, it's our team of correspondence, it's our producers, you know, it's our fact checkers. It's not just like, we don't just put it together

and go, like, let's go say this on TV. But between the scenes is a space where I can, you know, for lack of a better term, just to the happening on the day. It's just what's in the zeitgeist. And so it's my most honest expression, and it's a different pace from what I do on the actual daily show. But it needs the daily show to succeed.

So the two are the yin and yang of each other. The daily show is meant to be a parody the parody the parody, you know, a parody of a news program. Although news has become like the parody itself now because of all the jokes because of Trump, you guys can't control it. Um, no, genuinely, you felt it as well. Like I've seen your face, Jake. Sometimes when you're reading the news, you're just like, I'm, I'm on Comedy Central. And, and, and so what's nice is between the scenes, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the scene, the the the the the, the, the, the, the, the, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I's, I. And it's done really well and I enjoyed doing it. And I remember one day I realized it had gotten, it had really spawned a life of its own when Anna Kendrick came to the show and she was like, hey, do I get to be on between the scenes? And I was like, and I th it it it it it it it it it's th, and she th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, the, the, the, it's the, it's the, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th is thi, thi, thi, the an the an the an the an thean, thean, thee an theean, the an thee an, thi's thi's the seats? I was like, that's not a thing.

And she was like, but then whatever I've been watching? I said, I, yes, Anna, but it's not, it's not like a planned thing. She's like, yeah, then I just want to come hang out with you without planning. And I was like, okay. Who knows what it would have been at 10 o'clock at night. for access and still go in and do jokes on an issue without disrespecting the issue of the people involved.

Like that's a very, very difficult needle to thread. And so to be able to do that is just amazing. And then that goes back to Trevor and the producers even believing that that could be accomplished, that you could even go out and go and do that type of story. Like that was one of the more meaningful stories to the stories the the to th, Like that was one of the more meaningful stories I've done. One of the people that we interviewed in the piece was murdered three days after it aired. Like, this is real, it's real shit.

And to be able to take our cameras to a place like that, that's, that's just, it's amazing. And I was finding that when you speak out about this as a woman, when you ask for more, whether it's marching or protesting or making your voice heard on social media, there's this pushback in this country of people going, what are you talking about? Women have all the rights that they could possibly want. If you hate it so much, why don't you go to another country where they really hate women? And I'm like, no, why don't we compare ourselves,

let's measure ourselves next to the best countries in the world for women. Let's find out who's number one, who's number five? Who's number 13? I'm not trying to make you look good. I'm making you the way you are. For 2020, though, the plans are to try and, I think,

recalibrate the telling of the story that is America. You know, I think for a long time, we've become inundated by Donald Trump, and he's really fantastic at sucking all of the life out of the news cycle. You know, he just, he absorbs all of it. But it is an interesting time in America's history where America will have to decide who it is. And you know, in this previous election we saw, people just didn't vote. People were like, it doesn't matter, Trump and Hillary, it's all the same.

And you're like, is it? And so now America will have to decide. And so what's going to be interesting for me for 2020 is this new narrative and this new discussion around the Democratic Party. Because for a long time it's just been one storyline and that's Donald Trump. Donald Trump is and then it would be whatever action it follows. But now it's going to be like, who are the Democrats? What do they stand for? What are their plans? How do they cope with each other? Is it going to be a civil war amongst themselves

where they destroy each other before they get there? Or will they find a cohesive way to come together and then put up a legitimate defense or rather challenge against Donald Trump? And so that's going to be our our our our our our our, is figuring out how to inform you on what's actually going on. Because I won't lie. That's one of the biggest things that frustrates me in America. Like when I watch cable news, no offense to you in particular,

you know I like your show, Jake. Yours is great. But one thing that frustrates me on cable to the toose. I don't know what's going on. I came from a country where we didn't have like panels, we don't have, there's not opinion, it's just the news is reported. That's it. And then when I got to America it was very much like, wait, what, well, I think this is gonna, I think the Democrats need to do. Well, if you look at they need to do, and it's I joke and I say it for real because Jake is here, but I have appreciated like your interviews. I like to learn about what's happening.

I want to know what the candidates' plans are. I think that's what voters should be doing. They should be informed. It shouldn't be about how you eat a corn dog. And so that's what our journey is going to be going up to 2020, is giving you an accurate representation of what is happening in the race and what the candidates actually stand for and how it will affect your life.

that informs you about what's happening in your world. I've tried to bring in more international stories even if it's just to give you an inkling of an idea that is happening. You know one thing that I took for granted growing up in South Africa is we just knew what was happening in the world. We just knew. We knew if there was a war happening in Burundi. We knew if a president was having issues in a random country in the Middle East. We knew if Asia was having problems with its stock markets. We just knew these things and I took that for granted.

I understand America's a larger country so it is nice to let people know that something is happening that may in time affect Americans. And I think that's the thing that always plays me is a lot of the time American news would cover a story when it affects Americans directly. It would be like, America is now going to war with Venezuela. It's like, yeah, but if you follow the story from the beginning, you sense that, hey, there might be a war coming up, or there could be some sort of conflict that we need to get involved in or might get involved in, but it's less of a surprise. And so for me, it's just about informing people.

It's just about knowing what's happening in your world. You know about something that could happen to your country. Brexit, for instance, was a precursor to Trump. I'm curious to see how the Democrats go to war with each other while at the same time not showing all of their weaknesses to the Republicans. And that's going to be very interesting. But is there going to be a, because the problem is, is that the Republican Party knows very much about their base. But the Democratic Party, their base is so huge. Because it's basically anyone who's not rich and white. Or the Republican Party has been very good about convincing poor white people that they're just as good as rich white people and get them to vote against themselves. So if you, that means, How are you on public assistance and voting against public assistance? Like they're, it's perfect, it's genius.

But, so if you have such a large space like you've like, okay, you've got black people and then you got LGBT, like you have all these groups of people, like people, like people, like, like, like, like people, th, th, th, th, th, and people, and people, th, and people, and people, and people, and people, th, th, and people, and the people, their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, it's, their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their space, like you've like, okay, you've got black people, and then you got LGBT, like you have all these groups of people, how do you bring all of the groups of people together to go? We gotta defeat this evil man, and everyone has their own agenda. Just sort of going off of that, I'm really interested to see how the democratic candidates are able to reel in centrist and also mobilize a lot of young people like me who are very allured by the idea of like

universal health care like student loan forgiveness free college stuff like that that a lot of the democratic socialists are proposing and seeing these people like short circuit trying to bridge those two gaps is been like very entertaining you know one of the big divides right now in Washington is not even necessarily Democratic Republican, but it's generational. You know, politicians over 60 or so

and politicians younger than 40 or so. And there's a real chasm there. You saw it, I think some of it with the Ilhan Omar comments and the reaction in Congress, reaction among Democrats to that. Well, I mean, the problem is if you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you th you th you th you th you th you th you the th you th you, I mean, the problem is if you put young people in a position where we feel like we have no future, we're just going to become more radicalized. Like, that's, we have nothing to lose at this point.

So, that's just sort of what this upcoming election is going to look like, I don't know. The city of Toledo just voted for Lake Erie to have the same rights as a person. This is what most excites me in the future. We can sit here and debate politics while we absolutely destroy our fresh water, our rivers, our mountains, everything. If Lake Erie is deemed a person, which it is now, it can sue. You can sue on its behalf for farms, polluting, for ruining our world. That's what I'm most excited about.

Who yeah! He does this every time you do a panel. Every field. Can the lake vote? Yeah, well, no, I mean, it has the legal defense fund behind it. But what I'm saying is, it can't vote because it doesn't have an idea. We need... Probably vote Republican as well, because it's...

I know it sounds kind of like, you know, utopian, but for the next election, I'm most excited to see if we can do anything to protect our environment. That would really get me excited. Which, by the way, one of there and they trash each other and then like afterwards They'd go out and they'd grab drinks and I always just be like maybe you should put the drinks part on TV as well So that your constituents know how chummy you guys actually are behind the scenes Because your fans are ready to kill each other because of what you guys do in front of the camera and then when you go back? you go to the to the the the the the the the to to to the to to to to the the to their their to their their their their their their their their their their their to to their to to to to to to their their their to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their the debates. So we're definitely going to be back on the trail. The Daily Show is going to be out on the road.

You know, we're going to be at the conventions. We're going to be, you know, tracking the primaries. We're going to go wherever they'll give us to. Republicans don't let us in. They let Michael in sometimes. yeah, you know, the journey is going to be fun because we want to be on the road. We want to be a part of the story and you know what what is great is, I enjoy creating a show with my friends and colleagues over here that is a little edgier. Like we're not afraid to make jokes that sometimes piss people off. We're not afraid to say things that rattle the cage a little bit because that's what we
