Join me for my new miniseries on the Art of Fairness. From New York to Tahiti will examine villains undone by their villainy, monstrous self-devaring
Starting point is 00:01:17 egos and accounts of the extraordinary power of decency. Listen on the I-Heart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. You're listening to Comedy Central. This past weekend Donald Trump finally hit the campaign trail. So I headed down to South Carolina for what was originally permitted as a Maga rally but later downgraded to an intimate event. What is this event? It's a Trump rally.
Starting point is 00:01:50 It is a rally. It's a true. It's a rally. It's a rally. It's a rally. It's a truly rally, but it's not a big rally. Now, I thought it was a rally. It's a bunch of people standing in line. It's an event, it's a list a list a list a list a list a list a list a list a list a list a list list, it's a list, it's a list, it's a list, it's a list, it's a list, it's a thiii, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi. It's a thi. It's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, it's a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thrownea.a.a.a. It's a ta'erera'era'era'era'er.a'er. It's a tr.a'eroomoomorrow. This is a private event that VIPs have been invited to. Yes, only heavily vetted VIPs were invited invited to this guy. Sombrero Trump, Jim Yates from Lawrence, South Carolina. Sombrero Trump. Yes. It's not a rally. It's a leadership form in leadership teams. I see a guy like this and I think this guy's got two dates circled on his calendar. Singo to Mayo and January 6th. Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:28 This kickoff was packed with classic style and classic takes. Donald Trump is president right now. He's currently the president. Absolutely. He is still president. There's a lot of things that this Biden person does not have the presidential seal and things like that. tho th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I see thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I see, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thii thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, th seal and things like that that are pretty obvious. Biden doesn't have the presidential seal? When he speaks there's a presidential seal in front of him. It's not real. What is he doing as president? He is in charge of the military. Great. The military is in charge of this
Starting point is 00:02:56 whole thing. The military were put in charge in 2018 when President Trump signed an executive order. The American military arms that are going to Ukraine, we have Donald Trump to thank for that? No. There's two militaries. There's two militaries. There's a good and a bad. So there's two militaries.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Donald Trump's in charge of the good one. Yes. Biden's in charge of the bad military? That's exactly right. Fortunately, there were some supporters who still believe an election cycle is actually necessary and were serious about planning for a long campaign. It's just been doing a lot of preparations, a lot of teas in the waters, you know, just what's normal. Talking to advisors? Yeah, pretty much.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Nick Fuentes, Kanye West, like the minds that are going to shape the point of view of this whole campaign. The original Trump brand is stilling that guy that guy that guy. Yeah. Yeah. that guy. tha???? Yeah. thii? Yeah. thi? Yeah. thi? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah... Yeah. Yeah.. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.. Yeah. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that. that. that. th. that. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the th. to shape the point of view of this whole campaign. The original Trump brand is still strong. Sweet Zani that guy, huh? Mr. When the lootin starts, that's when the shooting starts. But a new election cycle could mean a different tone. What are you seeing that is different about Trump and his tone with this kind of an event? I think it's more elevated. He's at a more, kind of a mature level. How everybody's got all their advisors.
Starting point is 00:04:05 It's almost like he's finally listening to his a little bit as far as... Tone the comments down. Are you noticing even the MAGA community being more serious and respectable? If you watch the conservative rhetoric, it looks like you still love America. Conservative rhetoric still respects positions of power in this country. Our police, our military. Our executive branch? Exactly.
Starting point is 00:04:26 What's your hat say? I don't remember. I could shit a better president. This campaign is already attacking Biden's approach to the war in Ukraine, while lauding Trump's brilliant, yet still theoretical approach. Putin would have never, ever gone in. And even now, I could solve that in 24 hours. Trump says he could pick up the phone and end this thing in 24 hours. What actually would he say?
Starting point is 00:04:50 Knock it off. He'd kind of be that kind of tone to him. You think tonally, knock it off might cower Vladimir Putin. Because he knows Trump stands up and says, hey, I'm going gonna do it. So you wish Biden would threaten nuclear war? No, no. Strong stance of, hey, stop doing this. Okay. Or?
Starting point is 00:05:13 You gotta have a rattle behind that saber. Right, which is? Troops, but you don't want to do troops. Right. So what would it be? Threat of troops, you, you, you, you, tra, tra, tra, tra, so what would it be? Threat of it. Threat of troops? Correct. So you want Trump to get into office and promise to put troops into that war? No, I want him to stop it verbally because you don't want military into it because then it escalates. Right, if you said verbally you have to have some sort of backup? Correct. So you you want to have that back up which would be not true? true. true. So, true. So, true, true, true, true, true, true, to, to, to, true, to, true, true, to, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, to, to, to, true, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, thi, thrue, thr-i, thr-s, thr-s, thr-i. thr-i. to to to to to to to to to to has the troops. So you would support
Starting point is 00:05:45 troops being sent in? You don't want to send troops in? It seems like a complicated situation. It is very complicated. Fortunately for some of these non-rellygoers it doesn't have to be that complicated. I haven't seen any any news reports about you know this terrible war in Ukraine. Where do you get your news? Newsmax? And they haven't th th th th they have have have have have have have have have have have have have have then then then then then they haven't have have thu thu thu they have thu thu thu thu thu thus thus thus thus thoom thoom their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. t. thea. tou. thea. thea. thea. te. thea. to cover. I think the whole thing is fabricated and I think that Zelensky, who is the president of Ukraine, I believe that this is all extortion money. I spent a little time in Hungary and I met people who were coming from Ukraine to try to find safe haven. They were actual refugees fleeing. they said was a war zone. Were they lying? I just think they might be actors as far as I know I believe that
Starting point is 00:06:31 they might be actors. All of those people I met in Hungary those are refugees. I believe that the government is paying them to do that. That's a lot of actors. If that's a sad gig that's going to cost you billions. And if this is the Trump campaign's first round of invites, America is in for a sweet, sweet ride. Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and Trump UN ambassador has decided to throw her hat in the ring and run against her old boss. So I went to her campaign launch in South Carolina to see if the party was really
Starting point is 00:07:01 ready to turn the page. Are you excited about Nikki Haley for president? Very excited. She's done great things for South Carolina. She's tough. She's a woman, women rule. The Republican Party needs a change, and we need some with Nikki's foreign policy expertise. I love Donald Trump, but I think that she has more of a feminine finis. You think Trump has a harder time with communicating with ladies. He has a harsher approach when it comes to women.
Starting point is 00:07:26 He sometimes has to pay for it. He sometimes has a hard time navigating it. Yes. I mean I think she's really running again like I don't think she'll win. Oh, so I think it's for VP. So this is just sort of like batting practice. It's just fun to be here. Why not? BP or president. I was curious to see. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. to be the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the. the. to to to the. to th. to th. th. to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to be to be to the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. toe. the. the. to to toe. to be here, why not? BP or president, I was curious to see how Haley could win over ardent Trump supporters. I voted for Trump, but I certainly will not be doing that again. When did Trump lose your support? The nail in the coffin for me with Donald Trump? Let me guess. the.
Starting point is 00:07:57 the. the. . The. Oh, okay. Wait, hold on. You're not going to guess it. Kids and Cages? Nope. The interrection January 6th? Nope. Oh, okay. Wait, hold on. First impeachment. Nope.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Second impeachment. Nope. Okay. Inviting White Supremasiness over to Marlago. No, but that, I mean, you know, criticizing. Criticizing DeSahs. th coffins. I would have guessed kids and cages. I told you you wouldn't have guessed it. I know.
Starting point is 00:08:25 I would have saved you 30 minutes at the thing. This is why you come on and talk to people, you're constantly surprised. Yep. Haley has been either a strong Trump, or a vocal Trump, to a tru-a-auli a to trime ally to to to to-a-a-a-a-a-s a true-s a tru-s a tru-s-s-s-s-s, to-s, to-s, thro-s, thro-a-s. thoom to Donald Trump when she needed to? I think she has and I think Nikki Heavitt's not afraid to stand up to any male or female with her voice of opinion.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Yeah, so after January 6th she wasn't afraid to say this is disgusting. That's right. And then a couple weeks later to say they were being too hard on him. Yes, yes. We agree, I agree totally. An individual respects you if you can stand up to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the to the to to thua the thuo o' thua thuoom the the the the the thi, the the thiole, thi, thi, thi, thi, their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their toe.. toe. treen. trueuoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomeoomeoomeoom. thea. their their can stand up to them. So if something awful happens like Charlottesville. She speaks her mind. Charlottesville happens, she's not afraid to criticize Trump, walk right in there and hand in her 52-week notice. Right is right.
Starting point is 00:09:14 She knows right from wrong. It's a campaign that's distancing itself from the far-right fringe. Except if you look closely at Haleyley's first speaker, Pastor John Hagee, who has unusual views on the weather. As a candidate, you have that responsibility to not get in the gutter. So hopefully we can stay in a more positive place. Well, the first person I saw on stage was Pastor Hagee who thinks hurricanes are a punishment for gay people. Is that really what he said? How long ago was that? That was a wrong Katrina. Yeah, yeah. That's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's a that's a that's a that's a that's a that's a that's a that's a that? That was around Katrina. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:45 That's an interesting opening act. Pastor Hagee has said that hurricanes were God's punishment for gays. Oh no. Preaches the gospel. I mean, I followed him for years. Yeah. But maybe if she wants to attract moderates,
Starting point is 00:09:59 come in with a little bit more of a moderate pastor, who thinks something more acceptable, like tadoes are caused by too much masturbation. Oh my goodness. Yeah, that's way out there. That's too far. Oh yeah. Gotcha. And there's that line again. Good to know.

Starting point is 00:11:15 It's been said that nice guys finish last. But is that really true? I'm Tim Harford, host of the Cautionary Tales podcast, and I'm exploring that very question. Join me for my new miniseries on the Art of Fairness. We'll travel from New York to Tahiti to India on a quest to learn how to succeed without being a jerk. We'll examine stories of villains their villainy and monstrous self-devaring egos and will delve into the extraordinary power of decency. We'll face mutiny on the vast Pacific Ocean,
Starting point is 00:11:56 blaze a trail with a pioneering skyscraper and dare to confront a formidable empire. The art of fairness on cautionary tales. Listen on the IHart radio app, was imminent and called for a protest to take our nation back, outside the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. So yesterday I ventured all the way downtown and joined the media circus to observe this crowd of MAGA protesters who were definitely around here somewhere. Yeah, this is the truth social here. It says Tuesday, protest, take our nation back.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Excuse, is this the protest for Trump? Or the Trump protest or the supporting, are we taking our nation back? Is that today? I thought it was today. So I did have the day right, and then I found a proud and totally concealed Trump. Why are you here? Because I'm here to support Trump because they want that diner. So Trump went on his own social media and he called out people his supporters to come out here and support him. And right now, that's just you. I'm here. I'm here. Heavy as the crowd.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I don't need you here. I got this. I'm here to actually see what's going on. Everyone was talkingtalking about it, so I came here to check it out. You want to see it with your own eyes? Eyes, that's right, because I don't believe what I'm hearing on the news meetings. So what have you seen so far? Absolutely, it was nothing.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Nothing. Correct. This was an unusual magurall. The numbers were low, and it was in my own city. However, the arguments over some basic facts were refreshingly familiar. Do you think it's fair for Trump to be indicted if that does happen this week? Listen, I don't know all the specific facts, but what I do know is he's my president? Right now? I think he's serving the role as your president currently? Well, he's in my heart he's my president. Okay good, I just have to be clear sometimes. Well sure, sure. You think Joe Biden is president right? No, I think that man is a scam.
Starting point is 00:14:14 I just know that's allegedly he's there because that man doesn't make any sense of me. But technically he is there. He is serving the role of president maybe I don't know I've been down I've been been Washington DC I've not seen him walk in the White House you don't think he actually spends time in the White House I don't know well there are videos of him in the White House he's can we just I just want to get beyond this fact he is the president of United States fact fact that's what some said oh okay this Deborah to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the try I I I I I try I try I tru. tru. tru. tru. tru. tru. true is is is is true is true is is true is the is tho. that's is is true is is is is th. tho. tho. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi is thi is thi is thi is thi is thi the. thi the. the. he he is he is he is he is he is the. he is the. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi he is... This is... Deborah, why are you here today? Joe Biden is going after him because I don't even know why he's going after him because they're going to push him out to do and probably bring Michelle on Michael Obama in, okay? But, uh, Michael Obama? That's correct, okay.
Starting point is 00:14:56 They made... Why do you call her Michael told? Why do you call of your news from Joan Rivers? Oh no, I don't get none of my news from Don River. I'm just telling you what she said about Michael Obama, okay? Regardless of their sources, the MAGA crowd, which the police estimated to be between three and six people, believe these charges were unworthy of a former president. I don't feel should be in trouble. That's unconstitutional. I feel to indict a president. This is a political attack. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:31 They're not charging somebody else for this crime. Yes. Yeah, it's a police. Hold on. Everything is political. Right. They did charge somebody else with this exact crime. Yeah, and so why should he be charged? Well Michael Cohen Cohen was charged, pled guilty, served time in jail. This loyalty. If it ain't loyalty, it's nothing.
Starting point is 00:15:54 This is about a man who cheated on his wife with a porn star while his wife was at home with their newborn son. But loyalty is a big issue for you. Listen, we meant. Right. So we all know Trump doesn't understand how the law works. Turns out he doesn't know when it works either. But for Maga supporters feeling FOMO about missing the Donald's showdown with justice, I'm confident you'll get another chance. How long are you going to be here today?
Starting point is 00:16:24 I don't know, maybe a couple more hours,. How are you going to be here today? I don't know, maybe a couple more hours, walk around, grab something to eat. If Trump is indicted in Georgia next, you going there? I don't know, maybe I will. It's like a big old indictment tour, right? I'll see in Georgia, maybe we'll swing by DC. The Daily Show is back on the air, and so I'm back in the field. Just last week I went to the shores of Beautiful Lake Winnipasaki and hit up my first Trump rally in a while. The ex-president has been busy campaigning and juggling certain legal commitments,
Starting point is 00:16:55 while I've also been incredibly productive during these last few months. I've started four scripts, you know, a little bit of a novel, novella, actually. Long story short, five months later, bump kiss. Very little to show for it. But I think it's been good, you know, emotionally just to kind of stretch yourself, see what else is out thing. Find your voice, really. Turns out this is my voice. We're better or worse. So I'm still warming up. But I was excited to see the sites and sounds of politically engaged citizens. Whatever Trump does is smart.
Starting point is 00:17:29 That's just sort of your boiler play. You don't have to think through it, you've just given him that credibility. And it didn't take long to spot the new piece of must have muck-a-murch, the mugshot. the mugshot. Gotcha. So that was taken when he surrendered to authorities to have his picture taken. Huh? It says never surrender, but. But, is that on the back? Let me see the back.
Starting point is 00:17:56 But, oh no. It's just Trump. So where's the butt part? That's implied. Nick, tak the's the bu bu bu bu bu bu but the bu but, the bu. the bu. the bu. the bu. the butt, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the th. the the th. th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to-. to-. to-. to-. to-. to-. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. to. to-. to-I. the. the. the. th. take me through your fit. Uh, well, I bought the socks in town. These socks have Trump hair on it. Yes, sir. How much did you pay for the sweatshirt? $40.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Yeah. How much did you pay for the hat? Uh, 25? I think I get a hat at least once a month. How many trump hats do you have? America's doing under Biden, economically. Not good. I think, you know, inflation and the gas price, everything's going up. Milk and eggs are just through the roof, like buying regular food is, you know, so you've got to work four jobs to pay your rent. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:34 How much money have you spent on Trump Swag? A couple thousand dollars. Wow, that's a lot. But people have had a hard time paying for the necessities. Right. As the Donald rolled in, I wondered what fresh ideas I had missed on the campaign trail. He's been out in Iowa talking about, when I was there he was talking about how he changed the name from Crooked Hillary to Crook Joe Biden. Oh, so he's focusing on the issues. Yeah. Great. Sadly, the Donald's campaign appearances aren't the only thing on his schedule. How many indictments we up to now? Georgia? Georgia?
Starting point is 00:19:07 Okay, great. That's the New York City? That's the most, the bankruptcy. And? New York is the bankruptcy one. Great. It's hard to keep them straight. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:16 There's a lot of them. There's way. home in jail. They are. To which one? Like what he said in New York. Is that pre or post the first indictment? I think that was right when the lady charges. Wait, lady charges. Is that Stormy Daniels' lady charge or sexual assault? Sexual assault. It was a sexual assault telling you thinks you're voting for Donald Trump in the next election? I throwns. No matter what happens with these trials, this election still comes down to their guy versus the other guy.
Starting point is 00:19:45 I mean, Trump has done more than Biden will ever do. And that's the other side of it. He should be in jail, him and his kid for treason. I mean, they've taken money from other countries who we're not really in favor of. It's insane. The fact that you can have a member of your family, get billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia is nuts. Yeah, right? Nothing but a big cover-up.
Starting point is 00:20:07 So you think Trump should be punished for all of that money that Ivanka and Ja-Njara got? No. No. No. No. Woge and Jarr you? No. Right. And when it comes to which candidate makes a better commander-in-chief, there's a clear winner. Trump loves the veterans. Trump all the way, he's got my vote forever. Trump has called for the execution of General Millie. Does that rub you the wrong way as a veteran?
Starting point is 00:20:36 Well, I don't like Millie because he did the Afghanistan thing. Like all these generals are supposed to know what they're doing and it was a complete disaster. Yeah. So you don't trust the generals? No, I don't. What are you most excited to see inside? I just want to see him speak, see what he has to say about Israel? I know Joe Biden was doing a barbecue with his people.
Starting point is 00:20:57 We set a fleet of naval ships to Israel. Yes. Are you are you against the their their their their their their their their???? their? their? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I thii? I thi? I thi? I thi? thi? thi? thi? thi? th. thi? thus? thi? th. th. th. th. their? their? the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the generals. the the the the generals. the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. thi? No? No? No? No? No? No? No. thi? No. t. t. t. true? t. t. t. t. t. t. t. ta? ta? ta? true? true? true? true? true? true am for that. Oh that's good. So you can Biden credit for that? That's more the generals making making the calls there. Do we trust those generals? I don't even know who's in anymore so I don't care. Ultimately I wondered would these MAGA faithful ever care about any of these criminal charges? Probably not. Exhibit A just ask what their favorite rally was. I think January 6 is probably my favorite one. You were there? That's your number one. What made it your favorite one? What stood out from January 6th? Well, aside from all the violence that was planned by the FBI and such.
