We can't go in yet. What do you can't go in? It's not open? No, no, it's open, but we're waiting for the fights to start. And they spill out into the parking lot.
Starting point is 00:01:49 It's almost 2 a tm. It's about the thea. Fights, I? Yeah, yeah. Okay, the authentic Waffle House experience is watching strangers punch each other in the face. You recorded, you go viral, you record, you go viral, you record, you go very. You go, you go viral, filming somebody's fight. I just want to eat. Just, just trust me. Just, just trust me.

Starting point is 00:02:31 I'm stuck. Roy, I'm t back. You're gonna go viral. Kill you! Coming to you from Atlanta, where the peach emoji doesn't only mean fun. It's the Daily Show. And I... It all comes down to Georgia. On the hunt for free food.
Starting point is 00:03:04 And Stacy Abrah. This on the hunt for free food, and Stacy Abrams. This is the deal show with Trevor Noah. What's going on? Everybody, how you doing? We made it! We made it! Thank you so much for coming out! We're officially here. took the today, take a seat. Let's do this thing, everybody!
Starting point is 00:03:35 We made it! Thank you so much for coming out! We're officially here. Take a seat. Take a seat. Let's do this We're officially here. Take a seat. Take a seat. Let's do this thing, everybody. Take a seat. What is happening, everybody.
Starting point is 00:03:49 I'm Trevor Noah. Welcome to the Daily Show. And not just any Daily Show. We're coming to you from the Tabernacle Theater. In Atlanta, we made it. We're here in Atlanta. That's right baby. A town, Hot Lanha. I love it. Black Hollywood. The place with the realest housewives. The lost city in the ocean.
Starting point is 00:04:14 No, that's Atlantis. But still, same feeling. We're here. Oh and I can feel it. You feel amazing. This feels good. This feels really good. Oh, I'm excited for this. This is great. We're going to be here all week. All week we're going to be here, right? And if you're asking why, that's because, you know, that's how long our layover is. No, I'm joking. It's because Georgia is the epicenter of America's elections right now. the president race.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Now it could decide there the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the ided the presidential race. Now it could decide the mid germs. And I know, I know there are a few other states. I know there are, but none of them have the best food, right? So, I'm loving the food out here. Everything is extra. I love it. Yeah. You got that southern fried chicken, you know? You got that fried okra. You got you got fried tomatoes, everything is fried, even even some of your politicians brains are fried, I like that. You went too far, but I like that. The point is we're in Atlanta and I'm loving, can I tell you, I am loving every single
Starting point is 00:05:19 moment out here, everything, you know, like the, like the, yeah, the vibe is different. You got good people, you got you you you you you you you you you you you, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you th, you're th, you're th, you're th, you're th, you're th, you're thi, even thi thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even thi, even even even even even even even even even even even even even even even thi, I thi, even even even thi, I th, I th, even th, even th, even th, even th, even th, like the, yeah, the vibe is, the vibe is different. You got good people, you got great music, you know, everyone here is so polite as well. Yeah, in New York people are like, what the fuck is wrong with you? But here everyone's just like, bless your heart. Bless your heart. And I know, I know it means the same thing, but it but it feels different, you know? It feels completely different. Oh and can I just say, can I just say, one of the things I've been loving most about being here is how black it is. What? What? What? What? I landed in Atlanta. I thought I flew back to South Africa by mistake.
Starting point is 00:06:08 It's like, there's black people ever, it's like opposite Boston. I've never been anywhere like this in South. This is wild. From the moment we land, like the moment I landed at the airport, it's just black. the black. You get in the car, your Uber driver is black. Everyone in the hotel was black. I get into the room, I turn on the TV, the news anchor is black. Throws to a black weatherman, then crosses over to like a black sports reporter.
Starting point is 00:06:35 I walk into the bathroom, I look in the mirror, that person's black. I was like, oh Atlanta has so much traffic, traffic, have you felt the traffic, have you felt what? It's like I have. But the blackness changes that too. This is the only city I've been to where the traffic has rhythm. You can feel the traffic, even when you're moving forward, it's like, it's like, it's like, the the the the the the traffic, the traffic, to, to, to, the traffic, the traffic, to, the traffic, to, the traffic, the traffic, to, the traffic, the traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, the traffic, traffic, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, traffic, have, have, have, traffic. If. If. If. If, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have, traffic..... If, tra, tra, have, tra, tra, the the the traffic, the the traffic, the traffic, the the traffic, the traffic, like, the traffic, like, if, like, like, the traffic, like, like, the traffic, like, the traffic, like, the traffic, like, if, then it's like stop and then it's going you like what are we are we do what's happening right here you're like oh I'm gonna change lanes I'm gonna change name oh no I'm gonna go back to that lane and you're like oh no no you're not gonna go to that theyme to that the tra to the to theyl I'm the the the the the the the the the the to to to to to to the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to the the that I I to to to to to to to to to to to to to to merge here? It's like, no, no, no, you're not going to let me merge? Well, bless your heart, sir, bless your heart.
Starting point is 00:07:27 But as I said, as I said, the reason we're here, the real reason we're here, is because we wanted to feel what it's like to be on the ground in a state that everyone is looking to as election day approaches, everyone. Right? And you can't feel it, you can't the the the the their know what I'm talking about. Like, you can't even forget election day is coming. Every single ad, every single ad is political now. Every at, every billboard is political. Everything, every flyer, every spam text that you get. Everything is political.
Starting point is 00:07:59 It's Halloween today. I bumped into a kid on the street dressed as Frankenstein. I was like, hey, what are you doing? He's like, the real monster is actually inflation. Just three musketeers feels like a two musketeers. And as you know, they're two big races, two major races that everybody's watching, right? Two major races. First up, the governor's race, of course. Yes. Yes. With the seat, the seat currently occupied by Republican Brian Kemp, who's leading in the polls right now. Oh, is that for Halloween? Is that why you're booing?
Starting point is 00:08:39 Yeah, and he's running on a platform of making it harder to get an abortion, but easier to get a gun. And despite his policies, Brian Camp is seen as a moderate. That's what I find really interesting. All because, all because he refused to help Donald Trump overturn the election, which is good, don't get me wrong. But that's how extreme politics has gotten in America. He's like, I don't think we should hang Mike Pence and people like wow this guy's
Starting point is 00:09:05 got some moderate views yeah he's a real moderate politician but of course the person trying to stop him from getting a second term is the one and only Stacey Abrams who by the way, does it all, she writes books. She's a voting rights activist who played a big part in turning Georgia Blue in 2020. It's great. It's great to see that Stacy Abrams has gone boldly where no one has gone before. Paramount Plus. I like that. Now, we're going to be chatting to Ms. Abrams, right, right, later on in the show. So, that, who we're going to be chatting to Ms. Abrum, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who th. Who, who, who th. Who, who th. Who, who th. Who, who th. Who, who thi, who thi. Who, who, who, who, who, who, who, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to, who's thi. to, who's to, who's to, who's thi. to, who, who, who, who's thi. thi great to see that Stacey Abrams has gone boldly where no one has gone before. Paramount plus. I like that. Now we're going to be chatting to Ms. Abrams right later on in the show so we'll get back to that. But right now, right now, let's focus on a Senate showdown that has ramifications even beyond Georgia.
Starting point is 00:10:07 All right? And it's between Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican candidates, and the Republican candidates, Herschel Walker. Yes. Now, Warnock's campaign is focused on abortion rights and expanding infrastructure, right? But as election day gets closer, I feel like his campaign ads are now more focused on, making sure that the race doesn't go any longer than it has to. Guess who's coming to Thanksgiving? Mom, we brought a friend. Raphael Warnock. That's right, I could be interrupting your Thanksgiving, because if nobody gets 50% of the vote,
Starting point is 00:10:38 there'll be a runoff, and nobody wants that to happen. I'm Raffie O'Ranok, and we don't have to mix politics at Thanksgiving. That's why I approve this message. Yeah, give you place this week for James Coyne. Can I just say, that is the most convincing way to get people to vote. If you don't vote, politicians are going to come to your house and hang out. Can you imagine politicians just showing up on Thanksgiving? Like, ha, I'm Herschel Walker.
Starting point is 00:11:09 It's like, oh, hi, dad, wrong house. Wrong house. And by the way, by the way, I really need to understand it. What is going on in Georgia that Reverend Raphael Warnock is neck and neck with Herschel Walker. What is happening? Like, I know Walker is all neck, but what is what is happening? Every second thing the man says turns out to be a lie, right? He walks around with a fake police badge. Yeah? He pretended he was an FBI agent.
Starting point is 00:11:36 All right? He claimed he was anti-abortion, even though he apparently paid for one. He claimed he had only one kid kid he had one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one though he has like a thousand. Oh and and he told people he graduated in the top 1% of his class at the University of Georgia and then it turn out he never graduated at all at all. Like at this point I want to meet the Herschel Walker that Herschel Walker thinks he is. Right? Because at this point at this point everything at this point, everything is like, he treats real life the way we treat dating apps. You know, just like in your profile, like, I'm one of the tallest people you'll ever
Starting point is 00:12:11 meet, I founded my own industry and my mom lives with me, not the other way around, yeah. But the bigger thing about Herschel Walker for me isn't all the lying in the hypocrisy, he's also just weird. He's a strange guy. You know? Like, and if you don't believe me, if you don't believe me, watch him give one of my favorite answers ever in politics, right? This is what he said when he was asked about the biggest problem facing America today. What do you see as some of the biggest problems going on in our country today?
Starting point is 00:12:47 I think some of the biggest problems going on our country today, we have so many celebrities telling people that they can't do it. Telling a lot of people, oh, you know, you can't do it. You can't do it, like you got to feel bad for yourself, which is sad to me because when they've done it, you know, they've done it, but they're telling you you can't do it. And it's like, God, you did it, why they can't do it. Okay. First of all, that was the sleepiest interview I have ever seen. It's like if Ambien had a podcast.
Starting point is 00:13:27 What was that? The only reason those two should be in the same room is if Ben Carson is doing brain surgery on Herschel Walker. There's no other reason they should be talking to each other. No, because I'm sorry, I'm sorry. He says the biggest problem, the biggest problem that America is facing right now is celebrities telling people they can't do it. The biggest problem? The biggest problem, you think the average American right now
Starting point is 00:13:53 is saying, I know inflation is bad right now, but the bigger issue is that Vin Diesel has never told me to follow my dreams. I could have owned a bakery by now. Could have been baking for family. And look, and look, I get it, I get it, all right? Some people would be like, you're a celebrity. You're not objective. I guess so. Maybe I'm missing something here. You know, maybe I am. And so if I am, in case I've been too discouraging to the American people, let me say this.
Starting point is 00:14:26 In America, you can do anything. Just like Herschel Walker. If you want to be an FBI agent, you claim you're an FBI agent. If you want to graduate valedictorian, just tell people that it happened because it did. If you want to be the father of one despite having fathered four, then by God be the father of one, then by God, be the father the father the fathered, the fathered, the fathered, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, th, th, th, th, th, thin, thin, thin. th. too, too. too. too. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In, to, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, to to to to to to to too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, thin, too, thi. In to to to to to to thi. to graduate valedictorian, just tell people that it happened, because it did. If you want to be the father of one, despite having fathered four, then by God be the fathered four children. That is the American way. The point is, there are many major races that are going on this year.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And they're really close. You know this. America knows this. America knows this. A week from now, H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H. A th. th. thu. th. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. thi. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If. If.. If... It. It. It. It. It. It. It's. It's. It's. It's to. It's to. It's to........................................... It. It. It. It. It. You know this. America knows this, right? A week from now, Herschel Walker might actually be claiming victory. I mean, he'll be doing that no matter what, but he could actually win for real. And that's why, with one week until the election, the Democrats have pulled out the big guns. Yeah, Netflix's very own, Barack Obama. This race is so important. It even got Obama off the beach. He was down here in Georgia
Starting point is 00:15:26 over the weekend and he brought that Obama swag with him. Some of you may not remember, but Hersher Walker was a head of a football player. But here's the question. Does that make him acquit? To weigh in on the critical decisions about our economy and our foreign policy and our future. Let's do a thought experiment. Let's say you're at the airport and you see Mr. Walker and you say hey there's Herschel Walker, Heisman winner, let's have him fly the plane. You'd want to know, does he know how to fly an airplane? Wow.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Wow, really? Really? Really, President Obama, really? You're going to say that about a man who graduated in the top 1% of pilot school? How dare you? A lot of people don't know this about me, Herschel, but I was in Top Gun. That movie was about me. My name in the 80s was Pete Maverick.
Starting point is 00:16:35 I love how Obama roasts you with like that signature swag. He makes it sound so polite, but he's roasting the shit out of you. The last time I checked I I I I I I I I I I I I I that that that that that that that the shit out of you. The last time I checked, you didn't have any brains. But it was fun. It was fun to see Obama at it again, wasn't it? People always love seeing him come out. You know, it gets the crowd fired up, gets everybody excited. You know? That's what you get from him in a race.
Starting point is 00:16:59 That's why they don't send Joe Biden. You don't get the same thing from him. It's true. Joe Biden wants to do it. He's always like, I'll go give a speech. And everyone's like, no, no, please, sir, please. You're needed in Washington. There's a 1,000 piece puzzle we need your help on. You go on, you gothat, sir. So at the end of the day, it's all going to come down to the votes. All right? Who votes? Who doesn't? Which is going to be a little bit harder? I don't need to tell you this, but you know this because last year, Georgia State Republicans passed a very controversial bill. All right, it was a law, SB 202, which created all kinds of new obstacles, to the tabsets o obstacles to to to to to to to to to to to to thobe obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles obstacles to v v obstacles, to vov. to vo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, to v. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to v. to v. to v. to v. to v. to v. to v. to v. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. the. the-n. the-n. the-n. the-n. the-o-e. thoooooooooooooooo. to-n. th. to-n. to-. Fewer drop boxes, shorter absentee voting windows, and it's even illegal to hand water to people waiting in line. Yeah, I mean luckily you can still hand out Dasani because legally that's considered sewage, but at that
Starting point is 00:17:54 point, I mean people would rather die first. Now Georgia Republicans claim that this bill was about voter fraud. But we all know the real motivation, right? And let's say it's about fraud, right? It was about trying to suppress the voter turnout. We get it. We get it. I mean, because at some point, they even try to limit early voting on a Sunday. All right? Why Sunday?
Starting point is 00:18:16 Why they know why? thoo. that makes sure that they get people going straight from church on a Sunday to go and vote. And I've got to say that's particularly messed up. How are you going to take that away? Sunday voting was the one day when black church was only five hours instead of 10. But can I tell you what I've loved about being here in Georgia is watching the news and realizing that the voter suppression strategy might have backfired because it turns out, it turns out all these new restrictions are just motivating Georgians to vote even harder. Georgia continues to see a record turnout for early voters in a midterm.
Starting point is 00:19:05 So far, more than 1.6 million people have already cast their votes in Georgia and election officials expect that number to surpass the 2 million mark this week. I think a lot of people are really motivated for a bunch of different reasons. And I think democracy is definitely on the table. People have fought for us to have the right to vote. So we are persistent about coming to vote to go to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote to vote the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to vote.e.e.e. Wea. Wea.e. Wea.e. Wea. Wea.e.e. Wea. Wea.e.e.e.e.e.ea.ea. Wea. Wea. Wea. Wea. Wea. And, the table. People have fought for us to have the right to vote, so we are persistent about coming to vote early. You know, a lot of people lost their lives for us to have that privilege to come out and voice our opinion. I would have came out.
Starting point is 00:19:37 If it was snow on the ground, I would have came out to vote. Yeah, that's right. That's right. The voter suppression people thought that they could stifle the vote, but all if not is motivate people to vote earlier than ever. And let me tell you something, that's how you know. That's when you know you've messed up and you've made black people angry when we arrive early to some shit. That's when you know some shit's about to go down.
Starting point is 00:20:01 When black people like, hey man, you're only supposed to get here at 12 and say 1130 it's like, yeah, but we need to handle some shit first. Why are you early voting? You're about to find out. You're about to find out. But I just wanted to remind you whether it's early voting or waiting in line or mailing in your ballots. Everyone here in Georgia needs to get out there and play their parts. Everyone's going to play their part. th th th my to to to to to to to to to to tho to tho to to to tho down. to tho down tho do tho do their their their their tho tho to be to be tho to do tho tho do tho their tho out tho their to do to do their to to to to to handle to to handle to handle to to to to to to to to to to tho tho thi th. I to to to to to to to their their tho to tho thooo thoooooooooooooooooooooooo to to to to to to to to to to to to to to play their parts. Everyone's gonna play their part. Including myself, including myself, because as a celebrity I need to tell you, you can do it. You get out there and you vote early or you vote on Election Day. You bring your own water and if the lines along you stay in that line. Because if you don't, Raphael Warnock's gonna come straight to your house and he's coming for the the the the ballot for their. their. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their their their their. I's their, and if the lines are long, you stay in that line.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Because if you don't, Raphael Warnock's gonna come straight to your house, and he's coming for those sweet potatoes. All right, let's take a break, everybody. Starting point is 00:23:27 That's where we're going to be everybody. That's where we are right now. That's what you're feeling. Now, now, we might be in Atlanta, but the people watching this at home are not. So, we sent our very own Michael Costa out into the city to show America what Atlanta has to offer. Hi, I'm Michael Costa, here in Atlanta to show to to to to to the the places to the places to the places to the places the places to the places to the places the places the places to the the the to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to to to to the theateatlif. the the theateatlan. Hi, I'm Michael Costa here in Atlanta to show you the places that the guidebooks won't take you.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Ah, good. Good. Good. Can we get a skinnier guidebook? First stop on my Atlanta Buckhead list, the one and only Trap Museum. So what is the Trap Museum? Trap Music Museum? Yes. I was thinking it was like holes in the ground and spikes coming out.
Starting point is 00:24:20 No. You don't need this flashlight and skeleton cage? You don't need that at all, actually. KG educated me on the forefathers of Trap, loved by their fans and hated by the DEA, TI, aka Tip, Gucci Main, and my personal fave, Jeezie. Uh, yeah?
Starting point is 00:24:40 Uh, don't touch the exact. I just, I see Coke and I get all excited. So JZ is known as snowman and Of course these are bricks for my white people snowman is Cocaine man and these this is bricks. These is cocaine. I think why people know about cocaine. What do these pictures look like? Is this a trap for me? I mean they look like mug shots, but is that? Yes, it is. It is. Good job. I am out of balance speed.
Starting point is 00:25:10 So the goal of this piece, it's, they did what they had to do to come out of their circumstances, but it led into multi-million dollar businesses. Yeah, makes you feel something when you see a mugshot, mugshot. Don't Google if Michael Costa does. So these are the the the there's 10 of them. I try to live my life very much like Trap Commandment 7 peep shit from miles away that cap ain't about nothing. I mean that's truly how I've organized my career. Really what I think of you I think of trap commandment number three. Never go to sleep around a stripper. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:46 No, that is good. That is good advice. Which brings us to our next destination, Magic City, home of Atlanta's finest lemon pepper wings. And no, that's not a euphemism. Well, lemon pepper wings are a staple of a magic city. Wow. These wings are amazing. The wings haven't got her yet, Mike. Oh, okay. Once I tasted them things, I knew why people
Starting point is 00:26:13 preferred wings over breasts and thighs. That's a delicious win. Would you like a wing or not while you're working? So I ended up staying a while to try every flavor. Sorry there's some lemon pepper sauce on the money. Unfortunately I had so much fun that evening that I broke trap commandment number three and then it was time to stumble to my next destination to the grocery spot. This is the supreme of grocery stores. There's a line around the block let's go check it out. Follow me. You have a number I got I'm I'm on I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm a the. I'm a the. Let's go check it out. Follow me. You have a number? What? I just... Do you have a number? I got... I'm on TV, I'm a celebrity.
Starting point is 00:26:48 You don't have a number, you gotta go. What is... The grocery spot is the brainchild of local hipster Matthew Jones. And it's not your grandma's grocery store. Featuring street art, a DJ, and a line around the block, I knew I'd have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. I'm a the the the the the the the the the the the the I knew I'd have to blend in with these Atlanta scenesters to get past the bouncer. But once I got inside I was surprised to find just a regular store. I don't get it just people buying groceries. Just pretend you get it for camera. Okay. As you can see behind me there is no explanation needed. This place is popular for obvious reasons and if you don't get it, well then you're...
Starting point is 00:27:26 BDum. But then I noticed something odd. People were taking food and just walking out without paying. So after stuffing a few essentials in my pockets, I went to warn the owner. You gotta do an undercover boss here, man, like people are just walking out with their food. Yeah, you know, she just took a dollar and the guy had a full bag of food. Yeah, that's how it works. They don't even have to give a dollar. It's all free.
Starting point is 00:27:49 It's what we do. What? The business model is to feed people for free. We're going to give it to you. Wow. So, Atlanta's own only free, 400 people per day, three days a week. What inspired you to do something so stupid? We tried for profit, and it failed terribly. So then we learned what mutual aid was.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Matthew explained how his pay what you can model was a response to Atlanta's problems with food insecurity. No, it's not when your little sandwich feels pathetic next to that giant hoagy. It's people who aren't starving, but are still struggling to get enough food to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed their to feed their their to feed their their to feed their their to feed to feed to feed their to feed to feed their profit their their to feed to to to to to to to their their their their their profit profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit their profit to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed their food to feed to feed to feed to feed to feed their food food food to feed to feed to feed to food food to feed to food food to food to food to food to food their food their food food their food their food the pathetic next to that giant hoagie. It's people who aren't starving but are still struggling to get enough food to feed their families. Our demographic is the working-class family, the people who make too much to have help and government resources, but don't make enough to actually make it on their own. Okay well I guess I'm glad I'm here because I can really advise you on how to turn this place into a profitable grocery store. I. I. I. I. I. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I don't think you understand how non-profits work, but that's okay.
Starting point is 00:28:49 First taste is free, second taste, third, fourth, fifth. But then like once people get hooked, that's when you flip the script and start hitting them with the price? Well, hopefully, right? Eventually, the goal would be to where you could pay for your own groceries and help feed another family. Shhh, stupid. What about turning this thing into a strip club? I mean, if there's one thing Atlantis taught me, anywhere can be a strip club?
Starting point is 00:29:13 No. So what do the customers think of my bold new ideas? Look, the food is free but it's 40 bucks to get in the door. No, man. What if he just puts big price tags on each item that way the rich people have to pay? What if it's like a $50 tote bag but it's artisanal and it's cool then like people could buy the toat bag. Why would we want to do that? Because toats are sweet sweet but these folks did agree on one thing the store has changed their lives. That's travel like like like like like like their like their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th is th. thi. thi. T. T. T. It's to travel like for to get, you know, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh meats. Now it's convenient for the neighborhoods. Man, this is not a business. This is the community.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Spiritual, 100%. Suddenly, this zero dollar making business didn't sound like such a bad idea. I'm inspired by your story and the story of the grocery spot so I would like to pay what I can. Check. Thank you very much man. Please act blown away like I wrote you a check for a massive amount of money. Come on, don't. Just just just don't read it, just have it. Thank you so much for that, Michael Costa. All right, stay tuned, because when we come back,

We'll travel from New York to Tahiti to India on a quest to learn how to succeed without being a jerk. We'll examine stories of villains undone by their villainy and monstrous self-devaring egos and we'll delve into the extraordinary power of decency. Starting point is 00:32:47 My guest tonight is a voting rights activist and entrepreneur who is the democratic nominee for Georgia's governor. Please welcome Stacey Abrams. Stacey Abrams. Stacey Abrams. Welcome back. Thank you. I mean, this is strange because it's the fourth time that we're chatting. This is the first time I'm chatting in your neck of the woods. Yes, welcome. It's the final stage of the race. Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:35 It's been a particularly interesting race. So let's start with this. I know what your profile in your image is in most parts of America. Coming to Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia Georgia to Georgia Georgia to Georgia to Georgia to Georgia to Georgia to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to Georgia. to to to to to to to to to to to to. to. to. to. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to. to. to. to. to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the th. th. th. thi. the. toooooooo. toe. to. to. to. to. the. thi. the. th. th. of America. Coming to Georgia has been really interesting because every ad that I watch makes it seem like you are a very evil person. Well my parents were surprised to learn that I was responsible for the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby. I know where Hafa's body is buried and I may have stolen something backstage, so. That wasn't an ad, but okay, I'm going to check that. You know, it feels ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:34:14 It feels like people don't believe it. It feels like the campaign against you has been particularly personal. It's been particularly vile. Part of standing for office is you know people are going to attack you. You can either internalize the attacks, or you can use as fuel to to to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind the to remind the the the to remind the the to remind to remind the to the the to the to the the their their to to their their their something their something their something their something their something their something their something their something their something their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their to remind to remind to remind to remind to remind you to remind you to remind you to to to to to to to to to to to to to to toeuu.a.a.ea.a.a.a.a.a.a. You can either internalize the attacks or you can use it as fuel to remind you of why you're doing this every single day. And these are real people with real lives. And yeah, if Brian Kemp wants to say vile things about me, my daddy's watching
Starting point is 00:34:38 and I'm going to tell. You're in this race. You're in this race, you're trying to position yourself as somebody who can move Georgia forward. One thing that has particularly overshadowed your campaign though is how national politics has started to infect, you know, state-level politics. So I'd love to know how do you distinguish yourself as Stacey Abrams and how do you speak to people from under the shadow of them saying
Starting point is 00:35:06 Joe Biden? Because again, half of the ads are not about you funny enough, it's Joe Biden's it's Joe Biden's economy, Joe Biden's inflation. Stacey Abrams is Joe Biden. And so when you speak to people is Joe Biden. That's literally what one of the ad says to understand that does separate you funny enough from Joe Biden slash the national agenda? Well first of all people remember who was in the office before Joe Biden and they're very happy he's gone. Number two the money that has come to Georgia the resources that have come to Georgia the billions of dollars that have kept the state afloat came because of federal Democrats, not because of the current governor. Hard-working Georgians did this and I remind them of that. But it's also, Brian
Starting point is 00:35:51 Kemp banned abortion, he banned background checks, he banned children, he banned books, he banned the truth, and he intends to go further if he gets re-elected, reminding women that you do not have the right, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thee, thee, thee, thee, and thi, and their, and thee, and their, and their, and their, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, is is is is is, and, and, is is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is their, is their, is their, is their, is their, is togn, is toge, is toge, is toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, is toge, is toge, is toge, is tog to go further if he gets re-elected, reminding women that you do not have the right to control your bodies. Herschel Walker can do whatever he wants. Brian Kim's good with that. But if you're a woman, he believes he should control who you are. He made sure that. He made, he made sure that.
Starting point is 00:36:14 And there is a story about gun violence every day in Georgia. And so part of it is just reminding He made sure of that. So if you're the governor, you don't get to take credit but not take responsibility. And that's how we think. It is going to be a hotly contested race. You know? There are going to be stories coming out about poll stations that closed when they shouldn't have and people who are kicked out of lines and purging, etc. What it creates is a really the the th, it is a a th, it is th, it is a th, it is th, it is a really is a really is a really is a really is a really is a really is a really is a really is a really a really a really a really a really the their, it is a really thi, it is a thi, it is going thi, it is going. It is going thi, it is going tho, it is going tho, it is going tho, it is going tho. It's going tho. It, it, it, it, it, it, it, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It's, th. It's, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, i. It's, i. It's, thi creates is a really paradoxical world where, on the one hand, you want to call out election processes that aren't fair and make it as easy as possible for people to vote. On the other hand, people will be quick to turn that on you and say, oh, but if Trump doesn't accept the election, then he's bad, but you also don't accept the election, so you are are the the the election, thap thap thap thua thoe thoe thoe, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thr-a, thr-a, to, thr-a, thr-a, thr-a, tho, tho, tho, too, too, too, too, too, toe, to, to, tho, the the tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th..............a, th.. And, th. And, th. And, thi. And, thi. And, thi. And, t. And, tr. And, tr. And, tr. And, tr. And, tr.e.e.e. And, tr.e. And, tr. And, toda. And, tr. And, today, today, today, tod election, then he's bad, but you also don't accept the election, so you're bad. How do you navigate that and how do you speak to the issues around voting in Georgia
Starting point is 00:37:07 without making it seem like you don't accept the democratic process? You've actually done a great job of this, but some of your colleagues have been very easily duped into conflation. There is one thing to be used told no and whining about it and citing insurrection. That's what Brian, that's what Donald Trump did. Donald Trump denied the outcome of an election. I know I'm not governor. I haven't been governor for four whole years.
Starting point is 00:37:32 I have been very clear about that. That's how I got to go on Star Trek. Um, but what I have always fought for, and it's, I mean, you can go back. I was on the March on Washington when I was 19, so this is, I've got a pretty clear track record on this. Voting rights, voting access, is about who gets to show up. Election outcomes, that's up to the voters, but access is the responsibility of government.
Starting point is 00:37:57 And Brian Kemp is the architect of voter suppression and the reality is they try to stop us from talking about the access so they can gen up the outcome they want. And what I will never stop talking about is the fact that no American, no Georgian, should be denied access if they are legally eligible. And there is no amount of coveching and blaming and conflation and false equivalence that will ever make me say that it is okay to tell a Georgian you don't have the right to be heard. That is not right and it will not happen as long as I've got breath. As you say, the website is long, your answers are pretty conclusive and I see why you have the support that you do. Stacey Abrams, thank you so much for joining the fifth break, but we'll be right back.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Thank you very much. It's been said that Nice Guys Finish Last. But is that really true?
