Starting point is 00:00:22 From Comedy Central's World News Headquarters in New York, this is the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Ears Edition. How you doing everybody? Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, thank you so much. Welcome to the Daily Show. Thank you so much for shooting at Night Celanoa. Take a seat. Welcome to the show. Oh, you guys feel fantastic. Welcome to it. Our guest tonight, Tyler Perry is joining us everyone.
Starting point is 00:01:01 It's going to be a really fun chat, but first let's start with the big news that happened over the weekend. Students march on Washington and cities across the country against gun violence. Parkland, Florida, New York, Washington, Minneapolis among the more than 800 rallies taking place globally. They're calling us the largest youth-led protest since the Vietnam this the largest youth-led protest since the Vietnam War era. The largest youth-led protest. Give it up for those kids.
Starting point is 00:01:30 That was insane. That was amazing. I mean, did you see that? Look at all those kids. It's like a Roy Moore fantasy come to life. Just like so many kids. There were so many kids that like the march looked like every single parent went out of town this weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Yeah, and then they're kids through the most productive house party ever. Now, it would be impressive enough if these kids just organized hundreds of thousands of people to march. But they also called those people to action. Parkland survivor Emma Gonzales, silently demonstrating the amount of time it took the gunman to turn her world upside down. Since the time that I came out here, it has been six minutes and 20 seconds.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Among the young people set her stage, the nine-year-old granddaughter of Dr. Martin Luther King. My grandfather had a dream that his four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream that enough is enough. Oh, that little girl is so adorable. She's so adorable, but it must be so stressful being a member of the King family, because you can't just have normal dreams.
Starting point is 00:02:51 It's like, hey, honey, how'd you sleep last night? Good. What did you dream about? Oh, I dreamt that I went to the supermarket naked. You go back and sleep. And you don't wake up until your dream inspires people! But props to that girl, man, she's definitely going places. Of course, given that she's MLK's granddaughter, the FBI is probably tapping her toy phone as we speak. Now, as always, not everyone is totally on board with this movement. And I'm talking about people like former senator and 8 p.m.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Curfew in human form, Rick Santorum. How about kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or try to deal with situations that where there is a violent shooter, that people actually miscler? How are they looking and other people, I would ask you, they took action to ask someone to pass a law. They didn't take action to say, do I as an individual deal with this problem? Yeah, according to former US Senator Rick Santorum, citizens asking their lawmakers to make laws is just them passing the buck. Yeah, what kind of logic is that? Like he would make one hell of a 911 operator? So like 911? What? There's an intruder in your house? Well, how about you try getting him out? Instead of asking the police to solve all of your crimes, okay? Next call.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Hello, 911, what's that a fire? Well, have you thought of CPR? I didn't think so. Please stay on the line for a quick survey. Thank you very much. Like, clearly people like Rick Santorum think that kids should be shot and not heard, but we have the Daily Show disagree. So we sent Desilitic down to DC to connect with the youth. As the Daily Show's junior youth correspondent, I could certainly relate to the high school teens marching against gun violence. You could just feel the optimistic energy. These kids had a lot to say. Luckily I spoke their language. Background checks. Fleak, fresh or fam. None of those apply completely. It's like not the correct use I don't th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi to connect to connect thi to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to connect to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. the the the the the the the. the. the the thea. thea. the thea. the thea. the thea. Background checks, flea, fresh, or fam. None of those apply completely.
Starting point is 00:04:46 It's like not the correct use, I don't think, for background checks. The NRA, wax, salty, or bay? Is there none of the above? Would you rank my condescending your language as dank, lit, or lit AF? Dank. Dank. Teens are the only ones mobilizing this movement, not those, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, their, their, the only ones mobilizing this movement, not those like old adults. So like, does it kind of make it uncool if they actually do listen? And then don't you think they'll also take credit for it?
Starting point is 00:05:12 It doesn't really matter who takes credit for it, it just matters that the change has to come. I learned a lot, including how to dab. It was clear America's grownups had failed at an acting any change. We we we have to count on the next generation to solve all the rest of our difficult problems. All right, American high schoolers, do you have started a conversation about guns that could actually move towards legislation? So, which one of you wants to take on North Korea?
Starting point is 00:05:38 Perfect. Middle East conflict. Are you sure you can handle it? You're wearing a choker. Immigration reform. Yep. And US Tax Code, which one of you is the biggest nerd? Yep, that seems right. Okay. Go work your team magic on it when you have all the answers just slide it in my dance. Our job isn't really to solve all these issues. That's Congress's job. Wow, you really are young. That is hilarious.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Do you know what climate changes? Yes. Good, because you're going to have to solve it. Start with this. Desiladdez, everyone. Now, this weekend's march for our lives may have been the biggest news in terms of quality. But when it comes to news quantity, nobody beats President Trump. And over the span of the weekend, Trump made so much news happen that we don't have the time
Starting point is 00:06:36 to cover it all. Luckily, not enough time is the perfect amount of time for our recurring segment. Ain't nobody got time for that, Trump edition. All right, let's start with the big news of the day. Trump is getting tough on Russia. President Trump ordering the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats the United States has identified as intelligence officers. Plus, he's closing the Russian consulate in Seattle. The White House says the move comes in response to the nerve agent attack on a former Russian
Starting point is 00:07:08 spy and his daughter in the UK. Dozens of Russian diplomats have been expelled. They will have, by the way, about one week to get out of this country. One week? That's not a lot of time to cram all your poisonings in. Yeah, I mean, now with this deadline, Russians are going to be running around like perfume salespeople at Macy's just going to be like, you're dead, you're dead, you're dead, you're dead, you're dead, nerve gas by crumbling.
Starting point is 00:07:34 You know why Trump probably did this, though, right? Someone told him, they're like, yeah, I'm free! Putin, I'm coming home baby! It's like, no, not you, sir. Oh, damn it, stuck. Oh, and before he kicked out the Russians, Trump also got rid of his national security advisor, H.R. McMaster, and replaced him with elderly Lorax, John Bolton, for many people, Bolton, taking over for McMaster is terrifying. Because unlike McMaster, Bolton is Bolton is Bolton is Bolton is th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, I, I, I, I'm, I'm too, I'm too, too, I'm too, I'm too, I'm, I'm, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, too, too, too, too, the the the the their, their, their, too, too, too, too, too, too, tooom.a, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, for many people, Bolton's taking over for McMaster is terrifying. Because unlike McMaster, Bolton is horny for war
Starting point is 00:08:07 with North Korea and Iran. And he's one of the very few people left who still thinks the Iraq war was a good idea. Yeah. So now, we could talk about how Bolton's policies could throw America into a never decision, America is actually going to have fewer troops. President Trump has issued an order banning transgender people from serving in the military except under quote, limited circumstances.
Starting point is 00:08:33 You know, I'm not going to lie. I really don't understand this decision. I mean, if you're looking for brave people to join the military, you don't have to look any further than trans people. Like, you think it takes guts to fight in Syria? Try being trans and walking into a restroom in Alabama. That's bravery, my friends. That's bravery. So, in the span of a weekend, transgender soldiers and Russians are out.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Colonel Mustache is in. And if that wasn't enough, Donald Trump kept the government open, but he wasn't happy about it. President Trump cited that 1. tr tr. tr. tr. tr. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, th. thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th, th. th. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. I th. I th. I th. I th. th. thi, the, the, the, the the the the the an tean tean, toda tranean, thaean, than. than. than. than. thr-a thr't happy about it. President Trump cited that $1.3 trillion spending bill after threatening the veto because his border wall wasn't fully funded, and there was no fix, he said, for DACA. The president's signing what was a monster piece of legislation, reluctantly. There are some things that we should have in the bill. But I say to Congress, I will never sign another bill like this again. I'm not going to do it again. Oh, sucks when people make you do something
Starting point is 00:09:29 you don't want to do Donald. Oh. It's funny how Trump sold himself as the best deal maker of all time but he's being forced to sign a deal that he doesn't like. Yeah and his big threat is that he won't do it again. Yeah I guess that's the kind of negotiate him that left him stuck with Eric and Don Jr. in the divorce. Is that what happened? All right, fine, I'll take those little weirdos this time, but next divorce I'm standing my ground. Now unfortunately, we don't have the time to talk about how Trump promised to cut the deficit, but instead has spent money like Little Wayne at an out-of-network dentist because the Trump news that's been swallowing everything this weekend happened when the star of your sex dreams sat down with Stormy Daniels to discuss her alleged affair with Donald Trump and my friends it was creepy. You had sex with him yes it started off all about him
Starting point is 00:10:21 just talking about himself and he's's like, have you seen my new magazine? I was like, someone should take that magazine and spank you with it. And I was like, turn around, drop him. And I just gave him a couple swatts. This was done in a joking manner. Yes. And from that moment on, he was a completely different person. How so? He quit talking about himself and he asked me things and I asked him things and it just became like, you know, more appropriate.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Ew. Donald Trump likes to be spanked. I did not need to know that. And you know what makes it weirder is that when he's spanked, he becomes a nice guy and starts opening up. You know Bob Mueller is watching this interview, right? You know that. And now he's he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he he's he he's he he's th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to to to to, right? You know that. And now he's going to walk into the interrogation room with a rolled-up magazine like, okay, Donald, time to talk about Russia.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Donald's going to be like, it started with, oh, a meeting, ow, at Trumptown, ow. I've been a bad boy. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. Hey everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast, The Weekly Show, it's going to be coming out every Thursday. So exciting. You'll be saying to yourself, TGID, thank God it's Thursday. We're going to be talking about. All the things that hopefully obsess you in the same way
Starting point is 00:11:47 that they obsess me. The election. Economics. Earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient to bread ratio on sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance, it's probably second.
Starting point is 00:12:09 I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday? I mean, talk about innovative. Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart, wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back to the Daily Show. My guest tonight has 20 feature films, 20 plays, 9 TV shows, and a major film studio to his name. He wrote, produced and directed his latest film called Acrimony. Please welcome, Tyler Perry! Why the hell it takes so long for me to be invited here, man?
Starting point is 00:12:47 What, why the hell it takes so long for me to be invited here, man? What do you mean why to take so long? You are Tyler Perry? You're an extremely busy person. You have 20 films under your belt, have 20 plays you have a production studio Yeah, you you have a lot of things going on at the same you're extremely successful When you when you started off when you were doing your first Madea? Did you did you think it was gonna get to this? Did you think one day Medea would gross 500 million dollars? Hell no or I wouldn't have done it. You sound like Trump with the presidency now.
Starting point is 00:13:27 I wouldn't do the presidency. No, no, because you know, that's really freaking annoying, man to be a guy in that costume and doing that that long. But people love it, though. They love it. You know what people love. People love it and people love it and people love it. But like Medea has this thing where I've been in a movie watching Medea with people and you cannot help but cheer when she starts beating a man's ass on the screen. There's something like you'll be like, oh man, Medea, Medea,
Starting point is 00:13:51 and then she starts beating someone, you're like, yeah. You get into it. Yeah, I get it. Yeah, I get it. I get it. I get it? I get it. But it's blown up in so many different ways. Yeah. Did you always see yourself as a businessman or was it something that organically grew from Tyler Perry writing, directing, Tyler Perry, producing telepery. Did you envision this as a mogul or is it something that became in time? Totally building a brand. I approached it from building a brand.
Starting point is 00:14:18 The artistry wasn't that important in the beginning. That's why I'm so excited about acrimony, me being my first time to actually express art on, for color girls in this one way I feel like I'm really expressing an artistic side of me, but no I was focusing on the business because I had a plan, I wanted to own a studio. I had things that I wanted to do and I wanted to serve my audience well so that they could allow me to do this and they and th and th and th and th and th and th and th and th and the the the thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the the the the the the the the thrown the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their to to to to the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their thrown, I throwne. throwne. throwne. throwne. I throwne. throwne. throwne. throwne. the. throooeee. theeeeeate. I throwne the the the went for the business side of it first to enable you to them do the passion projects. Acrimony is a story that touches on so many topics that I think everyone can relate to. It's love gone wrong, it's people you know questioning each other in terms of infidelity. It's cheating or not cheating. Where do you get these stories from? Like what life are you living? Because this is like a theme and I've th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. thi, the, the, the, the, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, I th, th, I th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, thi, thi. thi. thii. thi. thii. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, I thi, I theme, I've noticed whenever you put a pen to paper. No, I'm the council to a lot of my friends, and a lot of my friends have gone through this.
Starting point is 00:15:09 And what fascinated me about writing this story is that there were, I would hear her story and I would hear her story and I would hear his side and then they weren't the same. And I thought, wow. Why don't I write a movie where you've the movie, why, why, why, why, why, and the th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and th, and I've th, and I've, and I've th. And, and I've th. And, and I've th. And, and I've th. And, and a th. And, and a fascinated th. And, and a fascinated th. And, and a fascinated, and a fascinated, and a fascinated, and I've th, and a fascinated, and what, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and th. And, fascinated, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, fascinated th. And, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what the the the tha, what tha, tha, tha, tha, tha, tha,'s telling the truth. I like the idea that you sitting there and your friends were like, and then my heart was broken, you're like, say, say the again, my heart was, your heart was... Oh, that was a great line. I could never live with him, him. That was great, that was great. So don't call methem with them. I'll show up at the premiere. I'm like, okay, y'all enjoy it, I'll be over here. Right. And acrimony is not just a cool story. You, you have an amazing cost as well. Taraji P. Henson, starring in the movie. She's been a blowout star.
Starting point is 00:15:53 What's it like working with her? Crazy. Tarajah's really great because she's not one of those actors. It's. thages. thages. thages. It's not. thages. thages. thages. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. th. thi. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi's not thi is not just not just not just not just not just not just not th. You're not th. You're not th is not th is not thia is not thia is not thia. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. is not is not th. is not th. is not th. the scene every moment till I must concentrate and focus for hours before I can go on to set. No, she's not that at all. Right. She does the scene, she'll be in tears, and the next minute. I'll say cut. She says, okay, I need some crab legs and some wine, what we're going for dinner? Kind of thinks. She's amazing. Well, she's amazing. often. I think you'd be good at that. You should do that. Yeah, that's a new character. I like that. Yeah, Medea goes to Stratford. Yeah, Medea goes to Stratford. Come on. See it
Starting point is 00:16:31 now. To be or not, to be, mm-hmm. To be or not to be at all. Yes, there it is. That's a new I want to credit. I wrote a new one. I want to credit. I want to their. to. to. their. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Yeah. th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I want. I want. I want. I want. I want. I want. I want. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. I. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. I. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. I... Yeah... Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I th. Yeah. I th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I the. I the. I want. Yeah. I want. I want. I want. I want.they go to Atlanta. I remember when I went there and someone we were driving past and I was like, what's that? And this one was like, oh, that's Tyler Perry's movie studios. And I was like, ha ha, that's that's Tyler Perry's movie studios. You have built a movie studio that is, I now believe bigger than Warner Brothers, and you are still building the studio. And on thup that, on top of that, which is really amazing, I, I, and you'll correct me for a moment, I believe this may be the first holy black-owned movie studio in America. Yeah, that's, that's, that's, that's good.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a big deal for many reasons. Why do you feel it's so important for you to own your own studio and have a black-owned studio? Well, listen, there's an amazing thing that's happening right now. Everybody's getting a chance to tell the stories of East Ray, Donald Glover, Black Panther, you've got all these great things happening, but ownership is the key to make sure that longevity stays. So I own everything. I own everything. I would not sell a script. I own everything. I would not sell their their their their their their their their th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thr. th. thrown th. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. Everybody is getting. Everybody is getting thr. Everybody's thr. Everybody's throooooooooooooooooes. th. thea. thea. thea. thea. Everybody's their the own a studio and have Black Panther be shot there which part of it was. And all of these other other movies being shot there. It's really, really phenomenal because ownership is the key to generational wealth, generational changes and I think that's what we need to learn as people of color. That's amazing man. You've got a big thing,
Starting point is 00:17:59 you've made a lot of money doing it. Is there one thing that money has changed in your life that you would never want to let go of? Like, is there something where you go like, and it's like something benign, but where you go like, yeah, money just if it wasn't for the, like this is the one thing I want to stay rich for? Yeah. Yeah. What is? You know, just to not have to fly on a commercial plane, it's really cool. That's really cool.
Starting point is 00:18:25 I know it's not a small thing, but it's really really cool. Why are you looking to be like that? I thought you're gonna be like Madagascan grapes. No, no, no, no, just to... Flying on my own plane. Just not have to, just, just, you, I know, just, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, I, I, why, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm, th.. I'm, th. th. th. I don't, th. th. th. th. I don't, th. I don't, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, you don't act like you are not doing the same thing but I will have people because we are going to a comedy festival it's just you did you do like sometimes go sit in the other seats and play other characters you've got to do that just to make the plane feel you'll be very happy to know tomorrow there are 12 people on the plane oh no okay that's different yeah it's 12 yeah I tho was just like you and you be like man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man the the the the this this the the this this this the the you be like man this the this this this this the the you be like man this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this you you this you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th th th you the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the nice and then you go to the other side and be like, um, Medell, so things is nice. We're going to be talking about all the things that hopefully obsess you in the same way that they obsess me. The election, economics, earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient to bread ratio on sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance, it's probably second? I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday? I mean, talk about innovative.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart, wherever you get your podcast.
