Someone younger and prettier than me. That, uh, believe it or not, I have no say on the hiring. Oh, interesting, interesting. I'm learning, I'm learning, I'm learning.

No, it was, I remember meeting you in San Francisco too when you did my show. And I will say I am like such a small part of that tapestry. The documentary is so cool because it really shows you like people who should be household names, who were actually trailblazing and breaking down barriers and stuff like that, so I could go out on stage and talk about Dix and stuff and stuff like that without losing my career, you know, in fact, th th th th th th th th th th th th that that that that that that that that that, that, thi thi thi thi thi thi. Absolutely, yeah. We, part of the documentary is we did a huge show at the Hollywood Bowl. There were like 30 comics th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thiii, there and it's great because I think like especially when I was coming up there would always be like maybe one queer comic on the lineup and that was it that would be like that's too much as it is and so we rarely got to like hang out on the same show and so it was really nice it was like a nice little like homecoming to just all be together on the same show backstage on stage it was great yeah it was some oh yeah it was cool you know that's that's that's kind of how I feel whenever I see you on the lineup and if I'm on the show as well I'm always

like oh yeah it's y'all you know it's always like we don't need to explain there's a shorthand and you know and just for a record I mean that the comics were in that documentary that the the the the the the the the the the th you th you th you th you th you th so the th I th so th so the th. th. th. th. th. I th. I the. I the. the. the. the. the. The Lily Tomlin, I have her vinyl that I bought. I've been trying to get her in person and that was also like the Hannah Gatsby was in that Australia zone and I think that was um who else was in the I mean we could go on all night. Right. Like I just want to, you know, right? No, it's so funny, like I could be crushing in a room but like I'm paying attention to the people standing at the back of the room who I'm like,. And I honestly, Ronnie, and this is not just me second year on national TV, but you, you are that person for me. Like, you are, no, no, you really are for a lot of us.

You are. Like, no, no, no. I mean this sincerely. You made me sound like a piece of shit when you said, I gave you advice. That doesn't sound like, guys, I'm not going on to people's show and going like, hey, here's some advice from this comedy, genius. It wasn't so much, it wasn't so much advice. I think I was probably complaining and being like, oh, I'm always getting told like what

to say and what not to say. And I think for you, your reaction to that as a comic was just like, it doesn't matter, you know, if you're gay, straight by, whatever it is, as the end of the day, if you're funny, you're funny. That's why I still do stand up, because it's the closest thing to a meritocracy in our industry. Yeah, I think so. Because like, with all the politics and everything of people saying, like, oh, I only got here because of woke guys Okay, that's not how it works like it's just like no matter how

Progressive you want to seem if the joke isn't funny then you're not laughing. Yeah, and that's why like stand-up feels so good. Yeah, yes, because Yes. And so, yeah, I agree. Totally agree. And for all its flaws, stand up is the meritocracy. And you know, I think sometimes it's hard to explain comedy to people. I mean, I quote you in a recent Esquire article, oh no, sorry, Hollywood Reporter article. I read all your press. I read all your press. You said like, uh, you find it difficult in this documentary to talk about comedy versus, you know, just doing it? Well, no, because like, when you're in a doc and you're sitting behind the camera

and you're being interviewed like that, it's not comedy. But like, I think the biggest pepiv. You know, like you can't just come out and say an opinion and expect applause and sometimes you get it but it's it's applause is not laughter. And, you know, and that's, I think that's also how I feel so much kinship with you, not just the Asians on whatever, but like as comedians, you know, because sometimes we're both out there and we're both trying to make it happen in weird bars and like in New York City. And oftentimes, you know, I never really play this card a lot, but oftentimes on a lineup

and there's no other Asians on that lineup, you know, it doesn't, you just got to figure it up. Because I think there's this weird assumption that because we tick some of the same demographic check boxes that all of our material will be the same. Yeah. But it's like, you and I will never talk about the same line. We cannot be different. We can the same. We the same. We can the same. We can't be the same. It the same. It the same. It the same. You know all because I it was I want the audience to kind of know Get an introduction and an investment into the people into the voices of my mom and my dad and what kind of what I I experienced with them so it's not just like I wonder how they were you get a little slice of it. Right, and did you, were you worried that that'd be too much of a bummer? No, then I knew I had to follow myself. Then you know, you gotta be really funny. So that I like the added pressure, you know what I mean?

It'd be sad if I couldn't overcome it. Like, comedy, the deck against yourself with the voice mail from the... He should have stopped at the beginning. That's all. No, it was very touching because I'm not sure if it's clear but the, you know, your parents passed away. You know, you play the voicemail and I think people who have had parents passed away, they, as soon as you play it, you know, it's all, man, like it really, it really, it really just really gets you in the mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood mood moods for the moods for the moods for the moods for the moods for the moods for the mood you in the mood for laughing at comedy. But it's true, that's when you know it's funny. When you could take something that's not supposed to be something funny, something that is painful, something tha supposed at our news, look with the Daily Shows every day. You take something that is tragic, which is our politics and you go completely funny. It was funny about it. That's very, yeah, that's a very noble pursuit. And yeah, because I'm an aspiring comic myself and I just wondered, like when you do comedy specials, you know, you've been in this industry for so long now, you know, you've seen so many, you know, you've got decades, if not centuries on me in life, and, you know, and you're just so old, even though you don't look at it.

But you've seen so many, you know, you've seen streaming services, you've seen cable TV, you've seen specials. You've seen you, you've seen the the the their th you've seen their th you've seen th you've seen th you've seen th, you've seen th, you've seen th, you've seen their th, you've seen th, you've seen th. Don't, A, don't rush. B, wait until you have like enough time under your belt that you understand your point of view. It's only special, I think, when you start digging into pain. And it's okay to drop one or two, but then three, four, five, and six and you start, as you go down on the road, the road, the road, the road, the road, the road, the road, the their, their or two, but then three, four, five, and six, and as you go down the road, I think it's more important not to, because comedians want to talk about the world, they want to talk about sports, they want to talk about pop culture, and want to talk about politics. I think the best comedians talk about themselves, and talk about their pain, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and they, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their........... It's easy to tell jokes for like 60 minutes, but it's hard to have a 60-minute therapy session that has an elixir for the audience to come away with and go, wow, that really helped my life. It's therapy sessions like I did. Then you did something. All right. And I mean, in your special, you kind of joke about celebrities. And we, you know, I also joke about celebrities, but I think the difference between you and me is that you're famous enough to actually know these people. So when you kind of basically, I don't want to butcher the joke, but when

you talk about Shaq and you're shouldn't even Shaq, you've got to go to this guy's birthday party afterwards. I may skip that. But here, I only talk about people that either I know I could be like Kevin Hart or... That's the next special. The fire... Cold hour on Kevin. Yeah, him or people that I know can't catch me. When we did Don't Be A Minus, our first movie, my brother Keen made us right 26 drafts of the movie

before we even started filming. And we didn't understand why. And then we did the movie and the director messed the movie up. So they gave us money to film for seven days, a whole new movie. So my brother looks at us and goes, okay, what movie you're gonna write now? We was like, what? We have no more to do. And he was like, he made us go through it. And because we went through those 26 drafts, we were prepared to write to write to write, to write, to write, whole next draft that became Don't Be a

Minus so everything is training because you don't want to fail and when you get these opportunities because if you fail it's going to take so long to get back here so we make sure before we send you out there that you're prepared. So how do I join this family? Because this sounds like Korean boy band training groups where you got people in wherever trained to be weigh-ins that like all loaded up already. You should be do a master class or something on how to be a way-in. I like the Korean boy band thing.
