The Daily Show: Ears Edition - Trump Is Hot for Tim Scott & Susan Collins Side-Eyes Troy Jackson's Second Cousin | Jimmy O. Yang
Episode Date: October 23, 2026Midterm mania continues with competitive races turning deep-red states purple, or at least… burgundy red? Ronny Chieng breaks down the headlines, including Trump professing his love for Sen. Tim Sco...tt and bragging about his favorite presidential side hustle: renaming bodies of water. Plus, Michael Kosta defends Maine Senate candidate Troy Jackson after Susan Collins points out that his family tree has some funky branches. When a new Trump outrage hits the news cycle, Chief Deniability Officer Sheryl B. Bahama (Grace Kuhlenschmidt) steps in to provide GOP lawmakers with a protective layer of ignorance. Whether she's kidnapping Mike Johnson or brain-wiping Tommy Tuberville, Sheryl makes sure Republicans can respond to uncomfortable questions about Trump with a confident "I don't know." Actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang sits down with longtime friend Ronny to discuss his third comedy special, “Finally Home.” Yang chats about returning to Hong Kong to connect to his roots 25 years after moving to America, how finding his childhood diary inspired his new special, and the differences between the comment sections on Chinese and American social media. Plus, Yang and Ronny discuss sharing a trailer on the “Crazy Rich Asians” set and what it was like being co-stars in “Interior Chinatown.” -- To get simple, online access to personalized, affordable care for ED, Hair Loss, Weight Loss, and more, visit https://Hims.com/dailyshow -- New customers can save 35% on your first month of subscription by going to https://dosedaily.co/TDS or entering TDS at checkout. -- The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11/10c on Comedy Central. This is The Daily Show with your host, Ronnie.
We got so much to talk about tonight.
The midterm racers are getting tight.
The campaign ads are getting ugly,
and we talk about important kitchen table issues.
Like, is it okay to bang your cousin?
So let's get right into the latest on the 2026 midterms
in our ongoing segment, the Midasie.
I've heard the words epic.
I've heard historic.
That's what it is.
It's the Odyssey.
That's what that is.
We are now just 12 days from the midterms,
the day when almost half of America
goes into the voting booth
and Googles on their phone who to vote for.
And with control of the Senate
hanging in the balance,
the debates are starting to get a little heated.
A fiery debate in Michigan
in a race that could determine
control of the Senate. Democrat Abdul al-Sayed facing off against former Republican
Congressman Mike Rogers, Rogers without providing evidence attempting to link
Al-Said to Islamic extremists. Are you for America or are you for these terrorist
groups overseas? It's a brilliant move. You got me. I am a terrorist. I wasn't
going to admit it unless someone asked me for I am the one terrorist who I am the one terrorist
also cannot tell a lie.
I'm the George Washington of Al-Qaeda.
Now, it's no surprise that Michigan is a hot race.
It's a classic purple state.
I mean, their last two senators were Prince and Grimmus.
But what is surprising is where else the race is tight?
The Republican Party, helmed by Donald Trump,
is so unpopular that Democrats are now competitive
in places once deemed unthinkable,
like in South Carolina and Iowa.
and Alaska, and even deep-red Mississippi.
A top super PAC spending over a million dollars
to help district attorney Scott Cologne
beat Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Holy shit. Mississippi is close?
Mississippi?
Where the state bird is a rifle?
Like, how close are we talking?
Like, one point, two points?
The Cook Political Report just moved the race
from solid Republican to likely Republican.
Okay.
So Mississippi has gone from red to burgundy red.
This changes everything.
If you're surprised that a Democrat has momentum in Mississippi,
you're not the only one.
So this moment that you're running in,
are you surprised that you're still, I mean, you could win this thing.
I mean, it's stunning to the idea that Mississippi would vote for you.
Why'd you say it like that?
It's kind of rude.
I mean, this guy was like, some people actually like you.
But hey, some people also like having someone shit on their chest.
So lots of freaks out here.
Look, clearly this is just Democrats living in a fantasy world
where the blue wave is so big that they have a chance of taking Mississippi.
It's not like Donald Trump is going to waste time campaigning there.
Well, President Donald Trump is coming to Mississippi to campaign for U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-S.
Holy shit! Either Donald Trump is campaigning there because this race is actually getting tight
or he's going to Mississippi because...
What's a single other reason someone would voluntarily go to Mississippi?
Oh, holy shit, this race might actually be getting tight.
But you know what? If it is getting tight, there's no one else better to bring it home than Donald Trump.
I know the haters are saying he's lost his fastball and his curveball and his slow.
ball and really all of the balls, but just watch how the big dog
rallied the crowd last night in South Carolina.
Come on, Trump.
Tell him why the Republicans have earned their vote.
Recently, I changed the name of a lake.
Okay, that's cool, but it's not just the changing of lakes, right?
You got more than that.
So we have a lake and we have a gulf.
Now we need a river.
And we needed ocean.
I was thinking of the Hudson River.
And I thought of the Mississippi and I said they'll never, I'll never do that to
Mississippi.
No, I don't think that.
So we're looking for a river, but it's not going to be outstanding.
And then the oceans, the only oceans I would do.
I only like two oceans, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
I'm not going to put either Trump or America on any other ocean but these two.
I mean, you gotta think at least one person in the audience is like, uh, hey yo, yo, yo, I can't afford food.
Are you going to get to that or just more water stuff?
Look, I wouldn't spend quite so much time
renaming undrinkable water
when the economy is collapsing and gas station signs
just say, fuck you right now.
But you know what?
I will say this.
At least Trump didn't spend this rally raiding men's bodies.
This time around, he was more romantic.
And then you have a certain senator that I happen to
as much as I can fall in love with a man,
isn't that much.
I fall in love with him,
and his name happens to be Tim Scott.
Trump fell in love with Tim Scott?
It's like when a frog becomes friends with a turtle, but gay.
But I don't know.
If I was Tim Scott, I'd be slightly offended by this,
because Trump has spent all week lusting
after every other male senator.
I mean, this guy has a great ass,
and this guy's super handsome.
And when he comes to Tim Scott, he's like,
This guy has a good personality.
Still, though, Trump is doing this at every rally now.
If Trump gets any gayer, I mean, the liberals on MS now
are going to have to start coming out against homosexuality.
But let's move on, because there's even tighter race in Maine,
the top travel destination for suicidal lobsters.
That's where Republican Senator Susan Collins
could lose her seat to her opponent, Troy Jackson,
unless she can bring up some weird factored.
about him. Well, I'm not going to bring up the fact that the mother of his two children is his
second cousin. I don't know whether people know that or not. Smooth. Just look, I would never
stoop so low to call this cousin f***er, a cousin f***er. Just because he f*** his cousin's cousin.
If you don't know what she's talking about, first of all, congrats on having a life.
But basically, the Democratic nominee, Troy Jackson, did have two kids with his second cousin.
What makes it worse is they aren't even married.
I mean, come on, Troy.
At least make an honest cousin of her.
But you heard Susan Collins, she's not going to make an issue out of this.
Politicians have to stay above it.
That's why they have shadowy super PACs to do their dirty work.
this new ad running all over Maine
targeting the guy who had kids with his cousin,
Troy Jackson.
Shocking news out of Maine,
Troy Jackson has been elected senator in Mississippi.
By the way, that's a real ad.
That's not us.
And that was a hell of a banger.
I don't know about the Senate race,
but the race for best country incest record is over.
I got to say,
was American politics always this vulgar?
Can you remember a time?
when things were more civilized and educated,
I thought Abraham Lincoln was like,
a house divided cannot stand,
not let's fuck slavery in the ad.
For more on how this attack ad is affecting the race,
let's go live to Maine with Michael Costa.
Ronnie, the people of Maine are bound to be upset by this ad.
There's three things you don't mess with in Maine.
A man's family, a man's lobster,
I don't know, seagulls.
I don't live here, Ronnie.
Okay, sure. You don't go after family, but Troy Jackson did have sex with his cousin.
His second cousin, Ronnie. That's totally legal in America.
Heck, sex with your first cousin is legal in 18 states.
Huh, I didn't know that.
Of course, in some states, such as Arkansas, Delaware, and Idaho, sex with your first cousin is legal,
but marrying them is not. It's sort of a cousins with benefit situation.
Right, right, right.
But back to Maine.
Do you think Susan Collins has...
Now, Arizona's a tricky one because
first cousin marriage is allowed,
but only if both cousins are over 65.
Okay, but back to Susan...
Or if one of the cousins is infertile.
While, Michael, you seem to know a lot about marrying your cousin-laws.
No, I just know the normal amount.
Things everyone knows, like that North Carolina
allows first-colds.
marriage unless your double first cousins.
What the fuck is a double first cousin?
Is that like your cousin's kid?
Jesus, Ronnie, read a book.
I mean, everyone knows a double first cousin
is a cousin along both parental lines.
Your cousin's kid is your cousin once removed.
Interesting fact, in Tennessee, they can marry each other
if they're the same sex.
Okay, wait, so abortion is banned in Tennessee,
but you can have gay cousin sex?
It's a great state.
Let's go volunteers.
Okay.
No.
No, stop.
It's ridiculous.
Okay?
These can't be real laws.
Actually, these are real laws, Ronnie.
God bless the United States of America.
Okay.
Well, look, you know, I don't care about the legal shit, Michael.
What about the morality?
Most people think that sleeping with your cousin is wrong.
Yes.
Of course.
Totally wrong.
Gross.
great we agree although
well what if your cousin is attractive
you know we can all agree that that complicates things
no we can't agree on that you can't bang your cousin
of course you can never bang your cousin
in most cases but what if your cousin looks like dualipa
you're not gonna marry duolipa that's weir than banging your cousin
okay Michael do you have an attractive cousin or something who
Stephanie? No. Of course not. Why? Did she say something?
I don't know. I don't talk to her. I don't either. I'm blocked. The point is it's complicated. It's a gray area that's hard to figure out, which is why I've figured it out. This here is the equation to determine if you can bang your cousin. Okay? And again, I've never thought about this until right now, all right? Look, you have.
have x times y x being your cousin's hotness all right and y being why not right over five to the power
of a okay what does the a stand for anal but only in tennessee let's go ball tears by michael

Something insane. Republican lawmakers somehow never have the chance to see it,
but it turns out there's a reason for that.
Okay, you've had this sack on all day.
You haven't seen or heard any news about Trump.
You are ready for those reports.
Order.
Mission should test it all this like anything.
I'm just in stage.
Okay.
I haven't seen it yet.
Yeah.
It's a bi-testing.
I haven't seen it yet.
I didn't see it.
Mission accomplished.
My name is Cheryl B. Bahama, and I am the chief deniability officer for the Republican Party.
Whenever Trump does something insane, it is my job to prevent Republican lawmakers from seeing it.
So they can't comment on it, even if they wanted to.
Which, to be clear, they do.
not. Basically, I block the news. President Trump renaming Lake Ontario Lake
Oh, you're welcome. I'll bill you. People tend to think Republicans are lying
when they say they haven't heard about the president's new meme coin or a post
where he shit talks a recently deceased person. I love those. But I'm actually
working really hard to ensure that they really haven't.
Disturbing Trump news can come from many sources.
So I have to do whatever it takes to block my clients from potentially harmful digital and physical media.
Over the past decade of Trump news, I've had many chances to hone my methods.
My number one client, of course, is Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
I haven't seen the specifics of that and I don't know.
Okay, I haven't seen that.
so I'm not going to comment on it.
I don't know anything about it yet.
I'm not going to comment on something I haven't even heard about.
I was a little busy this past week.
Yeah, he was busy all right.
I kidnapped him and dropped him in the middle of the phone.
It was effective.
And hilarious.
In a job like mine, you have to stay physically and mentally sharp.
You never know when you'll have to spring into action.
Senator, did you hear that President Trump tried to read it?
We need to draft a response.
No, you need to shut the...
In several of the more extreme cases, I have to get creative.
Like when Trump pardoned all the January 6th rioters, I mean heroes.
We're talking about people that were beating officers with fire hydrants, with metal batons.
Is that acceptable to you?
Those people were pardoned.
No, that's not acceptable, but I didn't see it.
What do you mean?
It's on video.
Great job, Tommy.
I straight up hypnotized him.
Completely erased January 6th from his memory.
Also, when I snap, he clucks like a little.
chicken.
Uh-huh.
Business is booming these days.
I got hired by the vice president himself.
Some Republicans are still calling for the president to apologize.
We're posting that video of the Obama's preaching them as monkeys.
Yeah, I mean, it was, it was one of those things where either because the time zone
changed or because we were so busy, the controversy had started and then died out by the time
I even paid attention to it.
Yeah, he couldn't pay attention because I dropped him in the middle of the,
Freaking corn maze.
I do a lot of corn maze work.
Pretty often, the entire party needs me at the same time.
But your girl has a plan for that, too.
Half the city still thinks the White House has an east wing.
It's not a glamorous job, but I'm proud to do my small part to keep our representatives
unaccountable.
Tonight, will the firing squad execution of the Fort Hood mass shooter be live streamed
to the world?
President Trump saying yes.
Oh, boy.
Kathy.

Acting comedian whose third comedy special is called Finally Home.
Please welcome the one and only.
My very good friend, Mr. Jimmy. Oh, yeah.
Thanks so much for coming on, man.
I've been hosting for like a couple of years now,
and I can never fucking get you on the show.
So thanks for clearing your schedule for once.
No, no, no, I'm always here for you.
I'm always here for you.
Yeah, I mean, but first time I met you
was on the set of Crazy Rich Asians,
and we had to share a trailer.
Yes.
Which I didn't know was actually a bad thing in Hollywood.
I was excited to even have a trailer.
Right?
I was like, we're going to be buds, you know?
And it's like, no, no, you guys are very low ranked on this week.
So you have to share.
This toilet seat.
Yes.
And you had to share this.
I had diarrhea.
I had diarrhea.
I'm sorry.
And, um, okay.
Thanks for blowing the, uh, telling everyone that.
We cut that out.
It's fine.
So, uh, but every, from the first minute I met you, the first thing you said to me was like,
I'm Jimi O Yang, I'm quitting standup comedy.
That's what you said.
You every year I've known you, you said you're going to quit standup comedy and focus on acting.
You're never going to do it again.
And every f***ing year you have a new standup tour.
So.
This is true.
I think it's not just standup.
I want to quit anything that I'm currently doing.
So even when we're shooting our TV show
Interior Chinatown, I was telling you I was never gonna act again.
I was gonna quit acting.
Yeah.
And now I'm acting and something else.
You're acting again.
I just think I don't want to work.
Yeah.
Can you blame me?
I mean, come on.
Yeah.
Why are you cheering that?
That's right.
Don't cheer this fucking...
He's a lazy liar.
You just cheer.
But you're too good to quit.
That's the...
I remember I said that.
I remember I say, every year,
I tell you you're too good to quit.
And thank God.
didn't quit because then you made this special in Hong Kong, which I don't think people
in the West know how influential this.
Yeah, you people.
Don't know.
Don't know how influential this standout special is.
You released this in the last year, right?
Yeah.
So I'm just going to hype you up because I, this is true.
When I saw you release this special, it was like watching, it was equivalent to watching Eddie Murphy.
blow up. It was watching, it was like you, in Asia, you really ascended to this category of
yourself now. There's no one else. It's just you in Asia right now. Because when you were doing
the show in Hong Kong, it was your first show back in Hong Kong. And all of Hong Kong went.
It was crazy. The entire goddamn city went. You did like, how many shows are you doing in the arena?
We did five shows at the arena. And how big is the arena? It was 8 to 10,000 seats.
So it was something out.
Nothing I ever experienced.
It was crazy.
Yeah, people kept coming and coming,
and I kept getting messages about how well you were doing
and fucking, and it was like a nonstop parade
of not just the city coming out,
but like Hong Kong show business royalty.
Yeah, people are grew up watching.
Yeah, would show up and be like,
Jimmy O'Brien and they take forward to Stephen Chow,
John Xinse.
He would come in there.
Jimmy Young here is a great time.
Like, all these, like, famous actors would come and all that.
And so why the fuck are you still in America?
This is...
He's telling me to go back to where I came from,
which is actually valid in this case.
Yeah, why don't you go to the fuck back to...
It was wild, because I came in when I was 13
and I didn't really go back to Hong Kong for 25 years.
I was just assimilating, trying to, you know,
like be as American as I can't be
so I don't get bullied, you know,
like learn the culture here.
And then I forgot my roots.
And really, I wasn't trying to go back to do shows.
I wasn't trying to go back to make money,
although that's good.
I was just trying to go back because I really needed to.
I forgot how to speak Cantonese, my first language.
I got totally out of touch with my family, with my own roots.
And I just went back as a personal journey.
And then I was like, why don't we try to do a show here?
And then I shout out to my promoter, Alex Foam, who was like, The Man in Hong Kong.
He does all the crazy concerts for all my favorite musicians I grew up watching in Hong Kong.
And one arena show sold out in like 20 seconds.
and I've never experienced anything like this, right?
Yeah, they're really desperate in Hong Kong.
Yeah.
Yeah, you were selling like rock kids.
It was crazy.
You were like Taylor Swiffing in Hong Kong.
Yeah, I was Taylor Swiffing.
You were Taylor Swiffing in Hong Kong.
And I couldn't.
I wasn't ready for all that pressure
because people were like messaging me like,
there's spots, they're scalpers, you know?
Why aren't you doing something?
I'm like, I don't know.
I'm just riding the wave at that point.
But like, it was also, it wasn't just the sales,
it was the cultural impact, you know,
like you were selling.
And again, like I said,
I had friends in Hong Kong
who were just telling me like,
oh, we're going to go see you.
They kept mentioning you to me.
I was like, shut up about you.
I don't care about Jimmy or Yammer.
Yeah.
And the movies house would come.
And I mean, yeah, I mean,
but you built up to that, I guess, right?
Because you kind of knew that there would be demand there.
That's why you did the arena.
Otherwise, you wouldn't do arena play.
I was hoping there will be some demand there.
But like on my last tour,
intentionally, I think, like, when do you become an arena act
is when you just book an arena and see if you can sell it?
You know what I mean? I thought my agent, I was like, let's take some bigger stabs.
Let's do Radio City. Let's do the Kia Forum.
Let's see what happens.
I also did Radio City, by the way.
Yeah, no, that's okay. It's fine.
It's not a big of it.
Right away.
Yeah, yeah.
Just same way.
But, like, yeah, you did the Kia Arena.
I mean, also, you were no slouch in America.
It wasn't like you went there to, you know, you were doing really well in America.
and then you went off.
But it's stupid of me to have this,
that was my first time going back to Asia last year.
I'm like, most of my fans inevitably are Asian.
You know, they can relate to me.
You know, sure, sure, there's other people.
But I always, you know, sell the most tickets
in like, say, San Francisco, New York, L.A.
where there's a big Asian diaspora.
And then to not go back to Asia
where Asian people are made, why didn't I do that earlier, you know?
Yeah.
But do you remember I told you to fucking do it?
You did?
Yeah, I said, like, why don't you go do a show?
Are you taking credit for?
I'm being credit for this right now.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm going to go back.
Yeah, but now you got, honestly,
and it just happened as well.
So, you know, for me it's very fresh.
I don't know if everyone understands the impact you have.
Like, this guy, he went from, you know, you could,
when you go into restaurants, people would be like,
hey, it's Jimo Yang.
You went to, from that to like, now you're on the street,
and people are like, is Jimmy, oh, yeah.
Like, you can't walk down the street anymore.
Yeah, I think it started off.
Like, the first time people, anybody recognized me,
from TV in America, it was like,
oh, that's Jing Yang from that Silicon Valley show.
And I was like, oh, yeah, hey, how's it going?
They're like, oh, my God, you speak English?
You know, it was like, they only knew me as the character,
and then it became they knew me as me.
Yeah.
Well, that's also how good actor you were on that.
Oh, thank you.
This guy.
No, dude, I love this guy, man.
No, he's the best.
I appreciate.
I love this guy.
But, yeah.
I keep telling you, you got to go do Hong Kong.
You sell out of arena.
This guy is Hong Kong.
They don't like me in Hong Kong.
Everybody was asking me, when is Juani,
They don't like me the way they like you in Hong Kong.
This is different.
I've done Hong Kong before.
I did it.
I did it in like 2012, the small Hong Kong fringe club.
It was terrible.
No, but that's 2012.
Oh, okay, this is interesting, though.
Because when I did comedy in Hong Kong in 2012 or 2011, it was like expats.
It was like a terrible crowd.
It was like people who, expats in Hong Kong were like, they're like, you know, they're like,
they live without consequence because they're just like whatever happens in this city,
I don't care because I'm going home anyway.
Right, right, right.
They act like dicks in the city.
So we were doing shows in Hong Kong.
They would be drunk, assholes and be booing.
They would, like, trip us.
I remember, like, when we were going on stage to do comedy,
they stick their feet out to trip us.
It was terrible.
I was terrible.
I was like, I'm not, yeah, I know.
This, it was just terrible.
Yeah, man.
But now you go back.
Now it's different.
No, but now it's evolved into locals come and watch comedy.
That's pretty interesting, you know?
Like, I think in 2012, it wasn't a thing with local people.
My second special that I put out with Amazon,
this is years ago, blew up in like Asia
and like Chinese social media,
and people are like, we're, like, they don't really know about,
like stand-up is very new.
They still call it talk show in China, China.
Yeah, it's a very new art for me.
And they were like, we watched your video
with subtitles in English and Chinese to learn English.
Oh, they said that to you.
Yeah, yeah, so I was like,
oh, this is like a new medium that, you know,
obviously in America we've had it for so many years, you know.
But over there is still very new and it's very exciting.
So you're like their duolingo.
I was hoping you say I was there dual leper.
Either way.
But they're learning English from you, I guess.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, it's pretty cool.
And they watch your stuff too, man, you know?
I don't know.
I don't know what they're watching over there, but sure.
Thank you.
Yeah.
But also the other aspect of this special isn't just that you were doing these arena shows and whatever.
but you also like, you also kept the rights
and then you put this standout special in cinemas.
You sold it like a movie.
It was...
Which is also a Taylor Swift move.
Yeah.
Thank you.
So you cut out the middle person
and just put it straight in the theaters or something, right?
You cut out the distributor.
Yeah, it premiered in the theaters in Hong Kong.
It's the second highest grossing concert film in Hong Kong.
Didn't make much of a dent here in America.
But it was a fun thing.
Can you talk about the business side of that?
Like, how much-
Let me tell you something, I would never do it again, okay?
It made no money.
That's the truth of it.
It made no money.
I wanted to own it.
I wanted to do something.
I was at first gonna shoot the special in Seattle,
which is like a standard comedy special style
to, you know, one of the streamers.
And I did these shows in Hong Kong,
and I just told my promo, I'm like,
just put like nine cameras here, you know,
and see what happens.
And the shows were so special, you know,
and I got emotional because it was my first time going home.
I was like, let's cut this together as the special.
So instead of going to streamer,
I just did something different.
I wanted to come out in a movie theaters in Hong Kong,
the theaters here,
and then it's really for the people, you know, back home for me.
People who have money, yeah.
Well, that, yeah, that too.
No, but you made a cultural impact, which is really,
that's what I was trying to say about this tour that you did in Hong Kong.
Again, I can't emphasize enough how much it really struck home.
Not just you coming back, but the material you talk about in the show,
I mean, we saw a glimpse of it,
is you talking about you returning back to Hong Kong
and opening your childhood diaries
and your childhood homes and you have photos.
So it's a little bit of a one-man show.
It's very nostalgic.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it was, I wrote this diary when I was nine years old,
all in Chinese, perfect in China.
I didn't even know how to speak English then.
And then I found it in my parents' basement, like recently,
and I couldn't read a single word of it anymore.
I just forgot all about it.
It's so embarrassing of experience.
Yeah, why are you so whitewashed?
How do you forget your first language?
How does that even happen?
It's assimilation gone wrong, you know?
Yeah, but I don't even know,
would you have a brain injury or something?
How do you forget?
Probably, a little CTE, you know.
How do you completely forget how to speak your first language?
I'm being like a Chinese parent right now.
No, I know.
I feel so much shame, you know?
You know.
You got to say, uh, you got to say, uh.
His Cantony's not even that good.
It's not even that good.
Hey.
At least, at least I didn't forget it for a lot.
You know what's funny about Ronnie?
He can speak many languages, very talented linguistically,
but every language he speaks has the same exact accent.
It's like a Ronnie accent.
Yeah, but in Malaysia, we speak Cantonese different to Hong Kong people.
That's why it's accent.
It's Malaysian accent.
We've worked together on many projects now.
Many projects.
We did Interior Chinatown together.
What is your impression of me as an actor on Interior Chinatown?
All right, all right.
Let me blow this guy up real quick.
All right, like...
Please do it to the camera so I can clip this.
No, honestly, honestly.
Ronnie is one of the most pleasant people to ever work with.
Like, first of all, we met first on Crazy Rich Asians.
You know, actors, we have egos, whatever.
Ronnie, his catcher, is like, oh, I'm just happy to be her.
I'm just happy to be her, you know?
I'm just happy to be her.
You don't need to do the voice.
Okay, I'm sorry.
It's all so weird.
That's how you sound.
Yeah, I don't know how to feel.
I don't know how to feel about this right now.
Yeah, okay, please.
He's just a team player.
You know what I mean?
Like, you're very much a star yourself in Interior Chinatown.
I don't know if I'm a star, but like, I don't know.
I think, like, you know, TV, movie projects are group projects, right?
Absolutely.
And that's something very hard for comedians to grasp usually.
You know, comedians, I think one of our biggest problems when we transition to acting
is we don't know how to listen.
Or probably just in life.
We probably don't listen to our partners.
Spouses, right?
But one thing comics do have is that we're used to performing in, like, shitty bars.
Yeah.
You know, so we don't need any creature comforts in a way.
That's true.
Well, you're different.
You're a .
But I was like, I was like sharing a toilet with you.
I'm like, we have a toilet?
This is amazing.
Yeah, but that's a great attitude.
Like, no other actors have that attitude.
You're just happy to be there every day.
Right.
Do I know what you were like on Interior Chinatown?
Yeah, let's see.
You were, man, this guy was so dedicated as an actor.
I couldn't believe how, like, you were in it every scene.
I was feeling it.
And he had, in Interior Chinatown, he has to play a
a kind of down on his luck, poor person.
A loser, which is so hard for me to...
Very hard for you.
Yeah.
He was so dedicated that he bought a shitty car
so he could drive to the set every day in a shitty car
just so he could feel like,
what it was like to be a fucking loser.
Yeah.
That's how dedicated he was.
His car was so shitty.
They didn't even let him on set.
They really did it.
Because they thought he was just like a homeless person
driving a shitty car.
It was a Toyota Corolla and like 1999, $150,000.
Like, barely works.
But then, like, on the shifter, you know how you have, like, the R, the N, the one, two, three?
It has no words on it.
So you have to kind of figure out, it's like, I hope I'm going in reverse.
Yeah, well, you are very dedicated on that.
I got into a car accident the first day.
Like, riding off a set, I was, like, the lead of the show.
And I was like, oh, I made it, you know?
And then I hit this guy in a Tesla, and it comes out.
It's like, what the fuck, man?
You don't know how to fucking drive?
I was like, no, no, no.
Look, I'm an actor.
This is not my car.
I'm trying to play this loser that works there.
He's like, where fuck you?
And then he's like, wait a minute.
I think I know who you are.
And I was like, no, no, no, no, you don't.
No, you don't.
He was like, you're that comedian, right?
I was like, yeah, man, I do some stand-up.
He's like, yeah, I'm actually trying to do some open mics too.
So, hey, you just let me open for you.
We'll forget about this whole thing, you know?
I remember you told me this.
Yeah, so I took his number down, and I just never called this.
Oh, shit.
He's going to be in the comment section.
Yeah, what is the difference between, you know,
because you're active on social media,
I fucking hate it, I'm off that stuff.
But what is the difference being Asian social media
and Western social media?
That's a great question.
I sign up for Red Note.
Yeah, I don't know what all this shit is.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't know what this fucking shit is anymore.
It was a great way to, like, reach my fans
and, like, China and stuff like that.
but I do find the comments section
to be a little more blunt
in the Asian social media.
Are you serious?
Like on Instagram.
Like last year, I had to cancel a show
like a couple of shows
because, you know, I had to go shoot something
and schedule.
I was super apology.
I'm so sorry, guys.
I'll make it up for you guys, blah, blah, blah.
And on Instagram, people are, like, fairly supportive.
My fans, they're like, go get them, Jimmy.
You know, like, ah, go.
We can't wait for the next thing you're in.
The West. The West.
The West was very supportive.
Yeah.
And then on the red note social media app,
most Asian fans over there from the east,
they were like, fuck you, Jimmy, you know?
Are you doing this again?
We're gonna cancel you, man.
And then they're just very blunt.
They're like, ah, I don't know.
Like, he looked better when he had glasses.
Yeah, it's weird.
I don't know.
I feel like the West social media is toxic.
But you seem to say.
It's all bad.
But the West social media is like having white parents.
And the Asians, like having Asian parents.
They tell you exactly what's wrong with your face.
You know, as the West, they at least pretend to be somewhat supportive.
Yeah.
Yeah, man, I got to say, you know, love everything you do.
Thanks for coming on the show.
You're the best.
We've had, like, parallel journeys in America, and I've been doing since day one,
and you're the best.
And I'm really glad.
I'm really glad you're doing so well, and I hope everything's great with you, man.
I love you coming to show, man.
I love you, appreciate it.
Thank you, Ronnie.
Thank you.
Thank God.
Finally home. He's streaming now on Hulu. It's Jimil Yang, everybody.
We're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back after this.
