Starting point is 00:00:00 At least three people are dead following a school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin this morning. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News in 10 for Monday, December 16th. Tragedy struck a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin this morning. A shooter entered abundant life Christian school and took two lives and injured six others, according to Madison Police. The shooter is also dead. Madison Police Chief Sean Barners spoke to reporters shortly after the incident and said, police were working to learn more. Local outlet WMTV 15 reports that one of those killed in the
Starting point is 00:00:43 shooting was a child and the shooter was a student at the K-12 school. The police chief spoke to press today and explained what his officers found when they responded to the scene. When officers arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. We train on this almost cordial. The last we trained on this as commander was approximately two weeks ago. The protocols are simple. Stop the killing, stop the dying, find out who's been. And the officers did that. And they did that adamantly. The chief said he had no additional information about the victims because that information will be kept private until all the families are notified. The chief called the incident a sad day for the community and the country.
Starting point is 00:01:34 President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference in Marilago today. He took questions on his policy positions and on current events, including ongoing reports of drones flying over New Jersey and other Mid-Atlantic states. Citizens and lawmakers have continued to demand answers about why these drones are flying over communities and who is operating them. According to Trump, the U.S. government might know more about the drones than what is being shared with the public. The government knows what is happening. Look, our military knows where they took off from. If it's a garage, they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went.
Starting point is 00:02:20 And for some reason, they don't want to comment. And I think they'd be better off saying what it is. Our military knows and our president knows. Trump added that he does not think it's the enemy operating the drones because the U.S. military would shoot them down if that was the case. Trump would not comment on whether he had received a security briefing on the situation regarding the drones. The president-elect was also asked about his position on vaccines, like the polio vaccine.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Trump has tapped Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy has voiced concerns about vaccines over the years, but says he does not want to take away access to any vaccines. Trump told reporters today, that he wants RFK to deliver him a full report of his recommendations for vaccines. Not even believable. So we're going to have reports. No, nothing's going to happen very quickly. I think you're going to find that Bobby is much, he's a very rational guy.
Starting point is 00:03:17 I found him to be very rational. No, nothing, you're not going to lose the polio vaccine. That's not going to happen. I saw what happened with the polio. I have friends that were very much affected by that. I have friends for many years ago, They have, obviously, they're still in not such good shape because of it. Trump added that his administration will specifically be looking at why the rates of autism
Starting point is 00:03:43 have increased in recent years. The CDC reports that in 2000, about one in every 150 children were on the autism spectrum. By 2020, that number had risen to one in about every 36 children. There are growing concerns with more and more vaccines being given to babies. and toddlers in recent years, that that could be playing a role in the increase of autism in children. In the words of James Carville, it's the economy, stupid. The economy remains central to the 2024 presidential election and political strategists argue that high grocery and gas prices that were felt under the Biden administration directly contributed to Trump's win. During his press conference
Starting point is 00:04:28 at Mar-a-Lago this morning, Trump also announced some significant economic news for the country. The Japanese Japanese tech investment firm, SoftBank Group is investing $100 billion into projects in the U.S. over the next four years. The aim is for the investment to generate 100,000 jobs in the U.S. economy. SoftBank CEO Masa Yoshi-S. Son was at the press conference and told reporters that the investment reflects his confidence in the economy following Trump's victory. And in a somewhat humorous exchange at the microphone, Trump and the CEO discussed doubling the investment. You are discussing, and President Trump said, Massa, you know, double down is not enough.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Maybe, you know, go for more, right? I'm going to ask him right now. Would you make it $200 billion in $200 million in $7? He can actually, believe it or not, he can actually afford to do that. Would you do that? Well, my promise is 100, but, you know, he's now asking to do more. I think with your leadership, my partnership with you, with your support, I will try to make it happen. The investment announcement is a win for Trump during the campaign.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Trump spoke a lot about bringing business back to America. The Hill reports that soft banks investments are expected to focus on artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. Now let's hit our news flashes for the day. First up, it's almost Christmas. and that usually means one thing in Washington, D.C. Congress is in the middle of a spending fight. Congress has until midnight on Friday to approve and pass a short-term spending bill to keep the government funded. We can't expect a vote this week on what is being referred to as a stopgap funding bill. That's the type of bill that Congress is going to vote on.
Starting point is 00:06:25 It will keep the government funded for a few months, and in this case specifically, until likely mid-March. House Speaker Mike Johnson was expected to release details of the state. the stopgap spending bill over the weekend, but there was a delay. The lawmakers negotiating what should and should not be in the bill are disagreeing on just that. One of the sticking points is aid for farmers. GOP lawmakers from farming districts want the farm bill in the stopgap spending bill. But the negotiations for that have broken down. Now some GOP lawmakers say that they will not back the spending bill without economic aid for the farmers in it. Without full support from Republicans, Speaker Johnson will need some Democrat votes in order to get the bill across the finish line.
Starting point is 00:07:09 This stopgap bill is going to consume a lot of the oxygen in Washington, D.C. this week as lawmakers debate over it. So you can expect to be hearing a lot more on this as the week goes on. Today, the ousted dictator of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, issued his first public statement since fleeing to Russia. Assad's regime fell quickly to rebels last week. The swift fall of that regime was a surprise to everyone, including Assad, according to his statement. USA Today reports that Assad said in the post that he had no intention of fleeing Syria. Assad said he yielded to a request from Russia to evacuate the country after the military base where he was hiding came under a drone attack. Ukraine is reporting that about 30 North Korean soldiers were killed while fighting alongside
Starting point is 00:08:02 Russian troops. The North Korean soldiers were reportedly killed in the Russian city of Kursk. The Pentagon has confirmed that North Korean soldiers have been killed while fighting for Russia. With that, we're going to leave it right there for today's top news in 10. Thanks for joining us.
