President Biden will give a press conference tonight and Democrats will be watching very closely.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, July 11.
Tonight at about 6.30 p.m. Eastern Time, President Joe Biden is holding a press conference.
Two months ago, an announcement of a presidential press conference would have been interesting, but now it's blockbuster news.
Following the debate two weeks ago and calls for Biden to step out of the presidential race,
all eyes are going to be on the president tonight.
The media, Republicans and Democrats alike, will be watching to see how Biden handles himself
as he takes questions from reporters.
No doubt some or even most of those questions will center on the president's mental and physical ability
to carry out another four years in the Oval Office.
According to a Washington Post ABC News Ipsos poll,
56 out of every 100 Democrats say Biden should end his candidacy,
and 42 out of every 100 Democrats say he should continue to seek re-election.
And overall, two and three adults say the president should step aside, including more than 7 and 10 independence.
Biden has continued to say he is staying in the race, and top Democrats in the House and Senate say they are with Biden, at least in public.
But Axios reports that in secret, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has reportedly signaled to donors that he's open to a Democratic presidential ticket that,
does not include Biden. Be sure to check out the Daily Signal website tonight for coverage of
the president's press conference and catch clips of the president's remark on the Daily Signal's
X page. The Democratic National Convention is about a month away. Given the calls for Biden to step
aside, the Biden campaign appears to be a little nervous over delegate loyalty. President Biden's
aides, according to Politico, are making phone calls to delegates to make sure they remain loyal
to the president. The aides reportedly began with questions about whether the delegate still plans to
attend the convention in Chicago and whether they have been a delegate before. Then they ask questions
to gauge the loyalty of each Democrat delegate to Biden. Politico reports that one delegate told them
they were asked, is there any reason you couldn't or wouldn't support the president at the convention?
The Democratic Convention is taking place August 19th to 22nd in Chicago. There have been calls for an
open convention, but there is no evidence right now of such a convention taking place.
The Republican National Convention is being held in Milwaukee next week.
Stay tuned for the Daily Signal's full coverage of the convention.
China has yet to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
And yesterday, NATO labeled China a decisive enabler of Russia's war.
NATO leaders say that China has given Russia no limits.
And NATO is now pressuring China to cease all material and political support to Russia's
war effort. Today, in response to this, China claimed that NATO is seeking security at others' expense,
according to Politico. China's foreign ministry spokesperson warned NATO to not bring the same type of chaos
to Asia. The foreign minister said that China has an objective view of the war between Russia and
Ukraine. And according to China's spokesperson, NATO hyping up China's responsibility on the Ukraine
issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives.
NATO's decision to single out China took place this week at the NATO summit in Washington, D.C.
The summit marks NATO's 75th anniversary.
Elon Musk says he is suing the perpetrators and collaborators in the advertising boycott
racket.
Musk, who owns X, posted on the social media platform this morning that he is suing those who
are collaborating in the advertising boycotts that are meant to pressure social media companies
to censor user content.
Along with his announcement,
Musk shared a clip of Ben Shapiro testifying
this week before Congress on this very issue.
Shapiro called out specific members of Congress
for allegedly seeking to pressure companies
to censor speech.
Here's a portion of what Shapiro had to say
via the Vigilant Foxx account.
When Congressman Schiff speaks about targeting
social media companies that must be, quote,
pulled and dragged into this era of corporate responsibility,
because they are too tolerant of misinformation,
he knows what he is doing. He is participating in a sophisticated coercive campaign against free speech.
When Congresswoman Jayapal blames social media for placing America at the, quote,
precipice of a democratic crisis and calls on them to target they deem hate groups, she also knows what she is doing.
She is participating in a sophisticated coercive campaign against free speech.
When Congressman Hank Johnson says, quote, we need a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to control the so-called free speech rights of corporations,
he also knows what he is doing.
We all know what these government actors, what some people in this room are doing.
You're using the tacit threat of government action to compel private companies to throttle viewpoints you don't particularly like.
The First Amendment was not designed to enable workarounds by elected official.
It was directed at Congress, at you, and you're abdicating your fundamental duty when you exert pressure on private companies to censor speech.
Some in this room have been doing just that.
For years, we in the non-legacy media have been feeling the effects in the name of the Constitution and the name of democracy, this should stop.
Shapiro says it should stop.
And now Elon Musk says he is going to do what he can to stop it.
Musk says he is hopeful some states will consider criminal prosecution against those pressuring
private companies to censor speech.
The Democratic Socialist of America unendorsed Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
because she opposed anti-Semitism.
The New York Democrat hosted an online panel discussion with two leading Jewish experts on
anti-Semitism from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.
The DSA issued a statement saying the sponsorship is a deep betraying.
to all those who've risked their welfare to fight Israel apart hide and genocide.
The statement says,
On this panel, she conflated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism and condemned boycotting Zionist institutions.
Anti-Zionists opposed the existence of a Jewish state, which is what Israel is.
According to its website, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs seeks for Jews and Palestinians to live at peace.
The group believes in a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a
diplomacy and the creation of two independent, democratic, and economically viable states.
The Jewish state of Israel and a Palestinian state coexisting in peace and security.
The DSA says it only supports candidates who stand with Palestine.
Hamas terrorists who controlled the Gaza Strip in Palestine attacked Israel on October 7,
2023, killing 1,200 people.
And that's all for today's episode.
