Starting point is 00:00:00 It's week three of Canadian tires early Black Friday sale. These prices won't go lower this year. Maybe too long. Freezing. Save up to 50% November 20th to 27th. Conditions apply, details online. I'm Brian Gottstein, and this is the Daily Signal top news for Tuesday, June 18th. Here are today's headlines.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Bipartisan group of 13 senators unveiled legislation Tuesday to protect victims from digitally altered revenge pornography. Pictures are videos of victims that someone else alters to make them appear new, or in sexual situations. Senators Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, and Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, sponsored the Take It Down Act to crack down on the practice of using artificial intelligence to create so-called deep fake pornography of other people.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Cruz said that we've witnessed a stunning increase in exploitative sexual material online largely due to bad actors taking advantage of newer technologies like AI. He said that many women and girls are victimized again and again as their images live online in perpetuity. Cruz said that while some states provide legal remedies for victims, he wants to create a uniform federal law that would help in removing and prosecuting the publication of such images.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Emma Waters, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, explained how it works. She said that the AI-generated photos and videos, dubbed deepfakes, can be produced in a matter of minutes on various apps and webbees. websites. Anyone can put a person's face on these apps, which then insert them into a sexually explicit photo or video. The legislation doesn't just go after creators of deep fake pornography. It would force websites that publish the material to take it down within 48 hours once notified. Senator Dick Durbin introduced a similar piece of legislation, but supporters of this new bill have criticized Durbin's measure for being too broad, with one senator saying it would
Starting point is 00:02:10 stifle American technological innovation. Senators say this new bill will be narrowly tailored to punish criminal acts without chilling lawful speech. New York's top court ruled on Tuesday that a gag order on President Donald Trump related to his New York hush money case would remain in effect. The gag order prevents Trump from publicly commenting about the witnesses, jurors, or court staff. It does, however, let him speak about the judge and the district attorney who brought the case, Alvin Bragg. Trump's lawyers have argued that it's a violation of the former president's First Amendment free speech rights. According to the Associated Press, the lawyers argued that it interferes with core political speech on matters of central importance at the height of his presidential campaign. The New York Court of Appeals disagreed and ruled that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved.
Starting point is 00:03:05 According to the AP, Trump now has 30 days to file an appeal. During the trial in which Trump was eventually convicted on all 34 counts, Judge Juan Mershahn held Trump in contempt for violating the order and fined him $10,000. He threatened Trump with jail time if he violated the order again. President Joe Biden unveiled an executive order Tuesday that would shield illegal aliens married to legal U.S. citizens from deportation while they seek permanent legal status in this country. According to USA Today, the illegal aliens must have resided in the United States for 10 years or more as of June 17, 2024, and be legally married to a U.S. citizen by that date. In addition, they can't have been paroled or pose a threat to national security or public safety.
Starting point is 00:03:55 According to administration officials, the law will shield about 500,000 spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation. Representative Pramila Jaya Pal, a Washington State Democrat, praised the order. The AP reported that she said, many Americans would be shocked to hear that when a U.S. citizen marries an undocumented person, their spouse is not automatically eligible for citizenship. Imagine loving someone, marrying them, and then still continuing to fear you'll be separated from them. Republicans have criticized the executive order for being part of a larger open borders agenda. According to the Associated Press, Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said, Biden only cares about one thing, power, and that's why he's giving mass amnesty and citizenship to hundreds of thousands of illegals who he knows will ultimately vote for him and the Open Border Democrat Party. Chicago's Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the creation of a reparations task force as part of the commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Johnson said in his announcement that the task force is being created to review policies that have harmed black Chicagoans, from the slavery era to the present day. The Washington Examiner reported that Johnson said on Tuesday that the executive order isn't just a public declaration. It's a pledge to shape the future of Chicago by confronting the legacy of inequity that has plagued the city for far too long. He didn't say specifically what the reparations task force would do
Starting point is 00:05:26 or if it would mean that money would be given to Chicago's black residents. The mayor said, people always associate reparations with money, but there are policy changes and other items that can be done to repair the harm that such policies have caused.
