Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk, business. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal top news for Thursday, March 7th. Here are today's headlines. President Joe Biden will deliver the state of the union address at 9 p.m. tonight, that is 9 p.m. Eastern. During a call with reporters this morning, a senior administration official said that Biden will announce that he's directing the U.S. military to lead an emergency mission to establish a port in the Mediterranean on the gun. Gaza Coast that can receive large ships carrying food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters. The official said that the initiative will get underway when Biden makes the announcement and issues the orders. A senior administration official also noted that we are not planning
Starting point is 00:01:28 for this to be an operation that would require U.S. boots on the ground. We'll keep you all updated as we learn more tonight. I had the opportunity yesterday to speak with Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest at the Cannon House Office building on Capitol Hill to ask him what he's expecting to hear from President Biden during the State of the Union speech tonight. The Republican Congressman told me he thinks that the most important issue that Biden needs to address is the border. The most pressing issue is going to be the state of the Southwest border. You look at polling.
Starting point is 00:02:04 You see that really six in ten Americans are very concerned with what they've seen at the southwest border. We know that the president, being President Biden, inherited one of the most secure borders in modern history. And in a period of three years, we've seen that border turn into complete lawlessness. We saw in December over 370,000 illegal entries into the country. And so it's important that the president set forth to the American people his vision as to how he's going to secure the border. Guess went on to say that the president needs to take the opportunity tonight to lay,
Starting point is 00:02:39 out a detailed plan of how he intends to secure the border. But I asked guest how confident he is that President Biden will do that. It will actually hear the president lay out a plan on border security during the speech tonight. And this is what guests said. You know, I think the president is going to do what the president does well, which is deflect and blame others. So he's going to blame President Trump. He's going to blame climate change. He's going to blame Republicans in the House. You know, he's going to blame the fact that the legislation that was negotiating the Senate couldn't be passed out of the Senate and sit here. But again, you know, the president must on up and must be truthful that the American people to say that he currently has the authority he needs
Starting point is 00:03:20 right now. He just refuses to act upon that. Well, on other news related to the State of the Union, former President Donald Trump plans to give a live response to Biden's speech tonight. The former president said on true social on Wednesday, I am pleased to inform you that tomorrow night, we will be doing a live play-by-play of crooked Joe Biden's State of the Union address. Trump added, I will correct in rapid response any and all inaccurate statements, especially pertaining to the border and his weaponization of the DOJ, FBI, AGs, and district attorneys to go after his political opponent, me. Something never done before in this country, according to Trump.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Trump went on to say, we did this once before true tremendous success. beating all records, it is important for the country to get the truth. We will be reporting on President Biden's speech tonight. The Daily Signal will have a fact check out on that speech. So make sure to check that out on our website. Also be following the Daily Signal across social media platforms, as we'll be clipping some of the most important moments of tonight's speech. In other Trump-Biden-related news, Trump wants to debate Biden.
Starting point is 00:04:36 In a true social post Wednesday night, the former president said, it is important for the good of our country that Joe Biden and I debate issues that are so vital to America and the American people. Therefore, I am calling for debates anytime, anywhere, any place. Trump continued, the debates can be run by the corrupt DNC or their subsidiary, the commission of presidential debates, CPD. I look forward to receiving a response. Thank you for your attention to this matter, Trump said. Trump did not participate in any of the previously held GOP primary debates. Biden's campaign communications director Michael Tyler told the Hill in a statement that Donald Trump's thirsty for attention and struggling to expand his appeal beyond the MAGA base, and that's a conversation will have at the appropriate time in this cycle.
Starting point is 00:05:31 But if he's so desperate to see President Biden in primetime, he doesn't have to wait. Fame psychologist and author Jordan Peterson had a warning for Congress today. He warned of the potential super state in which collusion between government and corporations may be eliminating the private sphere. That's according to reporting from our colleague right here at the Daily Signal, Fred Lucas. Peterson was a witness Thursday today in a hearing held by a special House panel. on government weaponization. The hearing focused on the Biden administrations working with large banks to surveil private financial data and in some cases debank Americans. I'm not here to talk about January 6th or about any particular threat, insurrection,
Starting point is 00:06:23 or protest, political or ideological, real or imaginary. I'm here to talk about the already extent and expanding collusion of government and corporation in restricting the individual freedom and autonomy upon which the productive, generous, and stable psyche economy and state are themselves necessarily founded. A total of five witnesses, including Jordan Peterson, appeared before the House Judiciary Select Committee on weaponization of the federal government. Peterson and the others testified about cases in which banks refuse to do business with a Christian charity and other conservative leading organizations as a result of government pressure. They also noted instances in which the FBI
Starting point is 00:07:11 used bank records to monitor gun purchases. During the hearing, the subcommittee chairman Jim Jordan, asked Peterson, do you think they are just going to stop with conservatives? Peterson responded that Americans' concerns should be about ever-expanding control rather than a specific political party. He said the danger posed by this increased ability of governments and large corporations to collude for everyone's freedom equally. Peterson went on to say it could well be at the moment, and I think this is the point Republicans are trying to make,
Starting point is 00:07:51 is that the people in the sites of that collusion tend to have more conservative leanings, but that will shift in a moment whenever the political tides shift. To read more about the hearing today, you can check out Fred's article in today's show notes. Axios reports that Republican Alabama Governor K.I.V. signed legislation on Wednesday aimed at protecting both in vitro fertilization, or IVF, doctors, and patients. In a statement shared on X, Ivy said the overwhelming support of SB 159 from the Alabama legislature proves what we have been saying. Alabama works to foster a culture of life, and that certainly includes IVF. Ivy continued, I am pleased to sign this important short-term measure into law so that couples in
Starting point is 00:08:44 Alabama hoping and praying to be parents can grow their families through IVF. IVF is a complex issue, no doubt, and I anticipate there will be more work. to come, but right now I am confident that this legislation will provide the assurance our IVF clinics need and will lead them to resume services immediately. Ivy's actions come after Alabama State Supreme Court ruled on February 16th that frozen embryos are considered people due to the wrongful death of a minor act. Emma Waters, research associate with the DeVos Center for Life, religion and family here at the Heritage Foundation has covered this for the Daily Signal. This afternoon, Waters told the Daily Signal in an email,
Starting point is 00:09:29 I am deeply disappointed to see Republican lawmakers bullied into giving the fertility industry full immunity from any liability in the practice of IVF. Waters added that parents in the state of Alabama now have fewer rights than before to hold the fertility industry accountable in the creation and preservation, of their embryonic children. Why should fertility clinics enjoy fewer regulations than the fast food industry?
Starting point is 00:09:58 Waters asks. She says they shouldn't, and we want to see parents empowered, not an under-regulated and unaccountable fertility industry. With that, that is going to do it for today's episode. Thanks so much for joining us here on the Daily
