Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm John Pop, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, August 22nd. Here are today's headlines. The Biden administration announced a new White House counsel today, Ed Siskel. The appointment of Siskel, who formerly worked at the Obama White House, comes as Biden faces potential legal challenges over his involvement with his son Hunter Biden's business dealings and a possible impeachment. Siskel formerly was a lawyer in the Obama White House. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Siskel was poised. part of the White House legal team handling major controversies.
Starting point is 00:00:46 The response to the 2012 Benghazi attack in which four U.S. citizens, including the U.S. ambassador, were killed, the collapse of the Salindra Solar Panel Company after receiving government loans, and the defense of President Barack Obama's signature Affordable Care Act. The Daily signalist Tony Kennett and Heritage Foundation's Tim Kennedy continue reporting from Hawaii. Tony writes about President Biden's Monday speech that Biden compared the horrific fires in Western Maui to a kitchen fire in his house during which he almost lost his 67 Corvette. Locals condemned the comparison, saying it belittled the disaster. That likely claimed over a thousand
Starting point is 00:01:24 lives and caused billions of dollars worth of damage to local business owners, families, and Lahaina natives. A restaurant owner in Kihei, Maui, told the daily signal via text message, this is the most despicable thing the president has ever said. Leslie Santos, a retired university administrator and a native of Maui, asked the daily signal how a leader could be so insensitive and lacked the level of compassion of a basic human being. Santos said, I'm not sure how anyone could compare the almost loss of a corvette, a replaceable object to the loss of life, loss of one's possessions, and loss of livelihoods. I am offended. There is no comparison to loss of life, especially the neighborhoods of innocent, non-replaceable children who perished.
Starting point is 00:02:07 three top House Republicans are concerned about a reported hostage deal the Biden White House has made with Iran. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCall of Texas, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefonic of New York sent a letter to President Joe Biden, writing about their concerns that the Biden administration negotiated with Iran without appropriate congressional oversight. The lawmakers write, referring to reports, that this strongly suggests your administration, has contemporaneously brokered a $6 billion prisoner deal and a nuclear understanding with the regime that are inextricably linked. They add this would be a clear violation of your administration's legal obligation
Starting point is 00:02:51 under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, which requires you to submit any agreement related to the nuclear program of Iran requiring U.S. action, regardless of the form it takes, whether political commitment or otherwise, and regardless of whether it is legally binding or not to Congress for formal review within five days. The lawmakers conclude the letter, which was sent yesterday, by adding, Our citizens deserve answers about why your administration is rewarding an Iranian regime that is targeting Americans overseas and at home.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Should the administration continue to ignore U.S. law and flout congressional oversight will use all tools at our disposal to bring transparency and accountability to the American people and return to a policy of maximum pressure that reverses Iran's nuclear advancements and deters its targeting of American citizens and service members, support for terrorism and other malign activities. And that'll do it for today's episode. Thank you for listening to The Daily Signal's Top News. Now, if you haven't gotten a chance, be sure to check out our morning show right here in this
