Starting point is 00:00:34 Here are today's headlines. The bodies of three hostages have been recovered in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces announced today that the bodies of 23-year-old Cheniluk, 28-year-old, Amit Buscilla, and 57-year-old Isaac Gilerenter were found in a tunnel in the Gaza Strip. All three were killed on October 7th, but their bodies were taken back to Gaza. 23-year-old Jeannie Luke's death was confirmed at the end of October, but the other two recovered hostages had been believed to still be alive. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote an X today,
Starting point is 00:01:24 The heart breaks for the great loss. My wife, Sarah, and I grieve with the families. All our hearts are with them in this hour of grieving. And Netanyahu added, We will return all our hostages, the dead and the alive alike. I congratulate our brave forces who, with determined action, have returned our sons and daughters' home. USA Today report that an estimated 129 hostages do remain in Gaza, including five Americans. Of those nearly 130 hostages, at least 37 of them, are presumed to be dead.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Turning now to Capitol Hill, a lively scene played out in Congress on Thursday night. Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Federman described the night. events as worse than the Jerry Springer show. The House Oversight Committee held a hearing last night on whether to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over the audio files of President Joe Biden's interview with Special Counsel Robert Her. It did not take long for the hearing to grow heated and a few lawmakers hurled insults at one another. Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green took a personal jab at the appearance of Texas Democrat representative, Jasmine Crockett, as the hearing was underway, per Brian
Starting point is 00:02:48 and Tyler Cohen. Take a listen. Do you know what we're here for? You know we're here about AG? I don't think you know what you're here for. Well, you don't want to talking about, I think your fake eyelashes are messing up. No, I ain't nothing. Hold on, hold on. This is. Order, Mr. Chairman, would you, would you, bring a order of your committee? Order, please. There's a point of order. We have a point of order. Then New York Democrat Representative Alexander Ocasio-Cortez jumped in. I do have a point of order and I would like to move to take down Ms. Green's words. That is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Are your feelings hurt? Move her words down. Aw. Oh, girl, baby girl. Oh, really? Don't even play. Baby girl. We are going to move and we're going to take your words down.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Green agreed for her words to be stricken but said, that she would not apologize. Chairman James Comer struggled to gain control of the hearing. Moments later, Representative Crockett called for a point of order and appeared to insult the physical appearance of Green. I'm just curious, just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody's bleached blind, bad built, bush body
Starting point is 00:04:05 that would not be engaging in personalities, correct? A what now? Today, Crockett told reporters that Green, is racist. Crocket said that Green's fellow Republican lawmaker, Representative Lauren Bobert, sometimes wears fake eyelashes, but Green doesn't attack her, like Crocket says, she was attacked. Crocket concluded that this means green is absolutely racist. And Crocket added that she probably will raise money because the racists are going to be so happy to give it to her. The hearing last night did ultimately end, and it ended with the committee voting along party
Starting point is 00:04:41 lines to advance the measure to hold Garland in contempt of Congress. The wife and daughter of the chief's owner is defending Harrison Butker. If you've not been following the Harrison Buckker situation, Buckker plays for the NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs. He's an open Catholic, and he recently delivered the commencement speech for Benedictine College, which is a Catholic liberal arts university out in Kansas. But he made some comments about women that have gotten him in trouble with the left. He had the men present and the need for them to be present in the home and with their families, telling them to be unapologetic in their masculinity. Then he addressed the women.
Starting point is 00:05:21 For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. Bucker went on to talk about his wife and how he could not have achieved what he has in his own career without her support. The NFL issued a statement saying that Bucker was speaking in his own capacity. and that the views of the NFL are not reflected in Bucker's comments.
Starting point is 00:06:13 There's even an online petition to remove the football player from the team for his comments. But Tavia and Grace Hunt, the wife and daughter of the Kansas City Chief's owner, are standing in Bucker's defense. Tavia Hunt wrote on Instagram, I believe finding a spouse who loves and honors you as or before himself and raising a family together is one of the greatest blessings this world has to offer. And she added that countless, highly educated women devote their lives to nurturing and guiding their children. Someone disagreeing with you doesn't make them hateful.
Starting point is 00:06:50 It simply means they have a different opinion. And Tavia's 25-year-old daughter, Gracie, was asked about Bucker's comments by Fox and Friends, and she said, well, I can only speak from my own experience, which is, I've had the most incredible mom who had the ability to stay home and be with us as kids growing up. And I understand, there are many women out there who can't make that decision. But for me, in my life, I know it was really formative in shaping me and my siblings to be who we are. She added, I really respect Harrison and his Christian faith and what he's accomplished on and off the field. It's Friday, And that means we are closing the show today with some movie news.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Star Wars Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. And in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary, Star Wars Episode 1 is back in theaters. The Daily Signal's Tony Kennett went to see the release of the film, or the re-release, rather, and he's here with us to discuss. Tony, thanks for being here. No problem at all. And it's very weird to say that the Star Wars Episode 1, movie review is kind of what we're bringing to the table this week, but there's really nothing
Starting point is 00:08:08 like it. I mean, I went into this thing, expecting that it was just going to be Star Wars, but in a movie theater. There's really no better way to paint that picture. And then going to see this on the big screen, like many did in 1999, made me realize that I can't believe I'm saying this. The Phantom Menace, Episode 1 is the best Star Wars movie, to go see in theaters. I can't even believe I'm saying that. Why? Well, the Phantom Menace has a bit of a,
Starting point is 00:08:40 let's say a little bit of a reputation for being a Star Wars movie that a lot of individuals didn't like. It took us from the great trilogy back to the prequels and it had a lot of more kid-focused entertainment that George Lucas was trying to do. But when you go back and watch it now, after all of the Disney Star Wars garbage has ruined the franchise and after episode two, was really weird in some of the plot. Episode one has so many great high points and exciting points for people to watch in theaters.
Starting point is 00:09:11 You've got the pod race. You've got battles. You've got a great lightsaber duel. You have music from John Williams that's so good. It becomes a bedrock piece of music that's still used today. And so many other great features in that film make it just a blast to go see in theaters, even better than watching it at home. So even given the high cost of movie tickets right now,
Starting point is 00:09:33 You would still say it's worth it. This weekend, grab the family if you're a Star Wars fan and go see episode one back in the theater. Get a big bucket of popcorn and just have fun. I mean, enjoy the entire experience, laugh, yell, have a great time. This isn't a sit on the edge of your seat movie thing. This is a reliving what was one of the most exciting moviegoing moments at the end of the 20th century. And now I feel old. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Well, Tony, for listeners like my. who are not necessarily Star Wars fans, if I go see this movie, am I going to be thoroughly confused? Because I know that the order of Star Wars movies is sometimes deceptive. Is episode one actually the first movie? Or is there something I need to watch before going to see this back in theaters? Now, you can go see this fresh out of the box. A lot of kids started watching Star Wars by starting with Episode 1 in 99. And it's not anything that requires a lot of lore knowledge or anything. it's just a great experience. Again, John Williams and the way that George Lucas set up this movie visually,
Starting point is 00:10:38 make it an exciting and appealing bit of entertainment that you can relive quite realistically in a way that you can't with so many other movies right now. Well, there you have it. Tony, thank you so much. We appreciate your Star Wars expertise. Oh, anytime I'm more than happy. Well, with that, that's going to do it for today's episode of the Daily Signal's top news. Thanks so much for joining us today.
